I belong to an XSport Fitness though that won't really help you much because its a local chain. I used to pay $42 a month but ever since my one year member anniversary they haven't been charging me (shhhhhh - don't tell them that!) and I can still get in no problem.

I like that its open 24-7. Even though I don't ever go in the middle of the night, sometimes I go late-ish and I hated how my old gym would close early on a Sunday night right when I wanted to be there.

I worked out 3 times a month with a personal trainer for a whole year until last October when he left to finish grad school. I have always enjoyed working out but that took it to a whole other level for me. Unfortunately I wasn'y paying any attention to my diet or I really could have lost weight then. Now I am working out on my own but using all the skills he taught me and really trying to challenge myself by doing something different every time I am there.

I think belonging to a gym is really great if you are very motivated. Before I moved almost a year ago the gym was much closer, now its a 20-30 min. drive each way and the traffic can be bad so it really takes a concerted effort to go. Fortunately I've heard that they are building another branch near me that's set to open sometime in 2007 so that's a relief. I didn't go at all for three months from october-the beginning of January but now I am back into it and shooting for 3-4 visits a week plus at least one weekly yoga class.

I belong to Gold's Gym - its like 3 blocks from me.
I paid I think $100 down and pay $50/mo. There's an option to pay more down to get a cheaper monthly fee, but I wasn't sure how long I'd be a member. My health insurance also covers like $20 of it if I go 12x/month.

I used to belong to a Bally's. I swore after watching their commercials that I'd never join one. Ha. They were too intimidating. I think I paid between $35-50/month and there was no down payment because I got in under the studend plan. I thought they were pretty expensive otherwise, but they also try to sell you the biggest package first - Paying like $600 down for $19/mo. plus trainers and all that - too rich for my blood.

Now, my experience has been that if you're not willing to exercise outside of the gym - walks around the block, bike rides, home equipment, etc. chances are you won't use the gym much either - unless you really need things like group classes to get you motivated.

Who belongs to a gym here? Which gym do you belong to? How much is it?
I live walking distance from a Bally's and I'm wondering if it's worth it.
