Here I am again. I spent two weeks fluctuating around 137 and then last week I got really sick, spent two days in bed practically not eating anything, then ate out all weekend. And now I am up back at 138. Suck. I am just going to have to take it from the top and try to get back down there. At least I can go to the gym again, I feel so crappy because of the inactivity!

this plateau. it's overstayed its welcome. if i continue working this hard and only ever see 139 on the scale i'm going to get a little cranky.

Yeah, I'm not too worried. I just hate the 2 week stretches where I don't lose anything! But I am proud of myself so far.

I wouldn't mind losing 2lbs. a month and noting more - as long as I didn't gain it back :)

Seriously, you're doing SO awesome - hang in there!

Okay, is this going to be a monthly thing? Lose 2 lbs and then spend the rest of the month not losing?

Yeah, the whole exercise in Rome thing is a little touchy. In Paris people actually do run in parks but I've heard that in Rome people will laugh in your face if you try to run on the city streets. That's why I am trying to run some at the gym so I can if I want to in Rome. I am also just planning on getting some good guidebooks and just walking walking walking everyday.

Thanks a ton guys. It helps SO MUCH to have somewhere to turn when I am angry and tired (and hungry). I know it will pass but your support really helps keep me motivated.

My plateau was from Feb 22-March 7, almost exactly 2 weeks that I weighed either more, or the same as my Feb 22 weigh-in. I assumed that it was a really wicked PMS/water retention thing, so I tried not to freak out about it. My weight loss HAS slowed down from the first 2 months, though.

Since I'm lazy, I haven't worked very hard to try to kick it up. I'm just believing in the process, and that if I stick to reasonable calorie counts, I'll keep losing weight.

Even if you had to wear a bikini now, I'm sure you'd look freakin' awesome - look how much you've already lost! And you will probably lose 7-10 lbs by June (if not more). Keep exercising, and I'm sure you'll be nice & toned by then. I think the key is not to dwell on your weight so much. Think about the amazing experience you're about to have! ROME! and the AMALFI COAST! With your HUSBAND! Keep those things in mind, and stick to your program (like you have been) and let your weight do what it's gonna do.

Once you get to Rome, just keep portion control in mind, and try to eat as many veggies as you can. And there's lots of stuff you can do to exercise without a gym. You'll probably be walking A LOT in Rome, and you can do strength-training exercises with no props (or with basic ones, like a towel)

You are working so hard and doing so well! Focus on the positives, and don't worry so much about the "negatives." This is a lifestyle change, right? Not just a weight loss.

Thanks C. I appreciate the moral support. I know I've made big progress but you see, I am doing a 4 week study abroad in Rome for the month of June and then my husband is coming over and we are going to the Amalfi Coast to relax. It really wouldn't be quite so pressing and immediate and cause so much panic if I didn't have this darn goal that I wanted to look good for (wearing a bikini on the Amalfi Coast around the beginning of July). And once I am in Italy I have no idea what I'll be presented to eat and there most certainly won't be a gym. So every week I don't see progress is another week lost.

I am just going to pick up my head and stick with it because that's all I can do, right?

oh, poor thundergirl! don't feel badly about the number; it just doesn't mean that much. go by your new pants size - that's the indication that you're succeeding in your weightloss quest. the plateau thing is a bitch, but it passes.

i'm not even really losing weight all that much right now, but i still count these past weeks as successes because my pants size has gone down. to break the plateau i'm lifting weights and eating more at least one day per week, and it seems to be working. the number may only be inching down, but my watch went from just right to too lose in one week and i'm a size 8, which i haven't been since 2002. so, technically and numerically, i may only have lost 9 pounds, but good changes are happening in my body, just like they are in yours!

i know this sucks... i KNOW this sucks. but it gets better, and you're doing wonderfully! chin up, grasshopper! things are going well for you!

Pissed off this morning. I overcame my vanity and actually entered in the sad fact that I am up half a lb. and have been weighing in consistently at 140.2 all this last week. After the caloric excesses of spring break, after which I was actually down .5 lb. I have been right back on track, in my range every day and working out like a fiend. And I'm up half a pound and the scale is not budging. F*CK! I am working SO HARD for this. I know that the numbers on the scale are not everything and this last weekend I discovered that yet another pair of jeans that were tight and unattractive last semester are really loose but still, to be working this hard at losing weight and sticking to the eating plan, I want some numeric payoff.

I am worried that I have hit my first "plateau." I know that cmighty and Yardenxanthe have had some issues with being stuck at one weight, what did you girls do to break out of it? Has this happened to anyone else? I have read the plateau busters articles, I am varying my workouts, I added running and I hate running! I am next going to try to eat high for a few days then low for a few but still...frustrating!

yeah, i agree, n. we're birds of an overachieving, perfectionist feather, yes? i do love to quantify and qualify... well... everything.

i tried not to, but i weighed myself again today. it actually went well in a strange way. i first weighed myself, and the scale read 144. so then i weighed myself again, and the scale read 142. then i weighed myself a third time, and the scale read 141. it really brought it home that the number is completely secondary, if only because of its relative arbitrariness, to my primary purpose of getting healthier through this experience. i mean, it's ridiculous to worry about the significance of a number that i can't even nail down! then i went to the gym at 5:30 am, did well during a lengthy and challenging workout, fit easily into a skirt that used to be too tight, ate a healthy breakfast, and had lots of energy when i got to work early. THOSE should be the criteria by which i measure my success, not the 144/142/141 auction i had this morning on the scale.

so i'm still going to weigh in once a week, and ONLY once a week, just to have some quantifiable measure to plug in to the program, but i'm going to try my damnedest to measure my success by more wholistic standards. it's going to be hard, though. i slip so easily into trying to be perfect...

Your muscles retain water after working out - especially after doing weights. You'll probably always weigh more after a work out.

c - I find that I am very much like you in this process. I don't obsess as much about the scale but I obsess over what I eat, especially food that I eat out that I can't quantify. At home I enter just about every recipe into a calorie calculator and I carefully weigh and measure every mouthful. But when I'm out, I try to order smart and not eat huge portions but I can obsess for a day over one bite of something and blow it up in my head that it had a million calories.

And sometimes I hate the scale too. I was 140.0 on Monday morning and today? 140.4 AND I worked out and did a ton of cardio yesterday. What gives? I guess as long as it goes down next week its all good right?

i'm switching to the one weigh-in day, too. my weight was up 1.5 lbs yesterday and it made me a grumpy bitch all day long. maybe it's better if i stop measuring my weight entirely and switch to inches? i'm making myself seriously neurotic by focusing on the goddamn scale. i woke up last night at 2:00 to pee and then couldn't get back to sleep because i was thinking about those damn 1.5 pounds, where they could have come from, how i can make them go away, etc. i was still up at 3. that's an hour of my life - my SLEEPING life - wasted because i was fixated on 1.5 pounds. this isn't who i want to be, peeps. this is freaking tedious.

I do the one weigh in day too. It just makes it easier to have a benchmark when I know I fluctuate a lot. I picked Monday because I know I want to see the scale go down every week so if I know that Monday morning is going to count, I won't blow my whole weekend. And usually when I am consistently at the same weight in the morning a few mornings in a row, I know I am there legitimately and its not just water or something. (144.0 two mornings in a row this week - holy sh!t)

And Diddsie - I was told at the Dr's office quite a long time ago that its perfectly normal to fluctuate as much as 5+ lbs. during one day. I always go to sleep way heavier than I wake up. Your body does a lot of the flushing and burning of fat and other stuff in there while you sleep.

Because of all the weird weight fluctuations.

Its hard to tell the difference between Monday and Wednesday so I just weigh in every Thursday before my shower and that's my weight for the week.

I'll step on the scale a million times a week, but that ONE weigh in is my "true" weekly weigh in.

Its been that way for a handful of days now...and since I've been weighing myself every Thrusday for a year and a half, I know how my body reacts and how weight changes in weird ways.

Pretty sure this is a real gain.

I think once it consistently reads that way for 2 weeks then you're looking at reality. Otherwise, effed up things happen. Did you read my wtf journal entries from where I was losing 4 lbs between when I went to bed and woke up? I don't know if you were on my FL then, but here's an excerpt...

"By the way, is it normal to gain or lose 4ish lbs in a day? I say gain or lose because it goes both ways... all the time. I went to bed 2 nights ago and I had lost 2 lbs and when I woke up I was 3 lbs lighter and then that night I was 4 lbs heavier and the next morning I was 1 lb lighter. This is the same scale. It seems freaking nutty to me. I have no idea how to know if I'm honestly gaining or losing weight or if my body is just freaking retarded except to average my weight over a long period of time."

So that's what I do.

Even if you really have gained weight (and I easily managed to put on 5 lbs over Christmas) you need to view this as a motivator instead of a depressor that, if you're like me, is just going to make you want to eat more.

7 days ago the scale was reading 169. 3 days ago the scale was reading 172. Now it's saying 168. Honestly, I just ignore it until it starts making some sense.

Well.....I'll make you ALL feel better.

Today I weighed in at 220.
MORE than what I started at.

Lowest I saw the scale go was 214.5 - that's what? 5.5lbs. in 2 weeks?

Seriously. WTF?
(I know I haven't been perfect, or really close to perfect, but how can it go on THAT fast???)

I've read about it several places and I think that there's an article about it on here somewhere. As for me, I am a little worried. I've been eating right at 1200 so far this week, just due to being busy, lack of hunger etc. and I am a little worried that I am eating too little. I think today I am going to make a conscious effort to eat a little more.

that's an interesting theory, nmgaya, and i can see it working in my little corporal wonderland here. the previous week when i was desperate to see the ticker go down i stayed well under my calorie limit (still within range - don't go suggesting hotlines or anything) and worked out vigorously every day... and gained a pound. i think i tripped the starvation wire or something. this week i've been a lazy slob and i'm happily at 145, which was my mini-goal for valentine's day.

weird. weird little body.

cmightym - sometimes the mornings when *presto* I seem to have dropped down a few pounds out of nowhere are the mornings after I've gone out to eat/drink etc.
Weird how that works.

I am definitely a believer in the zigzag effect theory: one slightly more highly caloric day a week can trick your body into losing weight faster and by making sure you don't plateau. At least that's how I justify going over every Saturday night. Seems like it works so far...

Carrots, pineapple, walnuts (high in omega-3!), protien from eggs, dairy from the frosting.

If you're anywhere near your period, my guess is it's water weight.

I'm at the same as last week - 2lbs up from where I was this weekend before I ate half of a carrot cake. :) At least I know who to blame!

yeah, it's been weird like that with me, too. the days when i think i'm going to have lost because i've been virtuous wind up being the days when the scale doesn't move or moves up. the days when i assume a weight gain is a-coming because i sat on my ass and went over my calories the day before are the days when i find a deficit.

my body is a wonderland, apparently.

I didn't think I was going to be down this week at all because I ate a whole ton and went out to eat several times this weekend but I have now lost a total of 5 lbs! (5 since I really started at 150.8) I am so happy. Here I go into week 4...

I have had the same experience on Wednesdays (my weigh in day) - either UP in weight or no loss. I weighed myself today, and I was down a lb. from my last lowest weight.

dood, kari, i really admire your patience. i think i'd be a much happier person in my life and in my pretend/interweb/spark life if i could have the broader outlook that you do.

Haha!
Congrats!
Maybe I should see if I have a magic day!

I'm up 2.5lbs, which I'm not fretting yet. The problem is, I tend not to watch myself well during this time and I think I end up gaining my water weight.

I'm going to try to stay on top of it this time so I don't REALLY gain.

uh, yeah. i have to sheepishly apologize for my rage & whining again. today the scale showed a 1.5 lb deficit.

maybe thursday mornings are just magical? humpday has betrayed me, and thursday mornings are my new weigh-in times.

Well, I guess maybe try to focus on the other things that are happening with your body. Do you have more energy? is your body toning up? Can you do something you couldn't do before?

I know how hard it can be not to see movement in the scale, but...maybe focus on the other things for now.

A couple years ago when I lost weight, it was SO SLOW. I was walking an hour every day, eating well, and nothing was happening. Then on day I weighed myself and I had lost 10lbs. Yeah, not overnight, but...it just seemed like it just happened!

AGAIN it's humpday and not an f-ing pound gone. i feel like i'm working SO HARD and it isn't working.

what do i need to change here? maybe add more general movement to my day in addition to the gym visit? maybe stop worrying so much?

Yeah...that's funny because today (my weigh in day!) I was down a pound!!

I laughed, and then weighed myself again. I don't care if it's water or fat or the effects of a healthy bowel movement - I'm counting it. If nothing else, it's given me a bit of hope and drive.

so the scale showed a 1.5 pound loss today. i moved it all around the bathroom to see if it was a warp in the floor or something, but it stayed true everywhere. i'm not going to count it or add it to the ticker because humpday is humpday, but it just goes to show how weird bodies are and how maybe the number on the scale isn't the best indicator of success. i may take my measurements intead, but i'm not really looking forward to that...

Well, and Spacegirl's right - lots of things can affect your weight - day to day - week to week. maybe you've got an extra pound of water weight today. I mean, it IS frustrating, don't get me wrong - and while, yes, logically we should probably all be weighing less - bodies are weird.

I'm not sure I buy the muscle weight thing though - I read that it takes a year to put on 5lbs. of muscle. Now, worked muscles do tend to hold more fluid - so if you had done some strength training you might be holding on to some extra water weight.

All I know, is that just for my own personal happiness, I might go sweat in the sauna after my work out tonight - see if I can't sweat a pound out. :)

but, spacegirl, that's what's so frustrating. i mean, according to the numbers i've got plenty more outgoing (burned) calories than incoming (eaten) calories, so mathematically i should weigh less this week than i did last week, but i don't!

it's just so illogical! i wish i were a robot.

ohhhhh - me too.

Yesterday was my weigh in & I was up 2 pounds! (I'm NOT changing my ticker!!)

I'm thinking of weighing in every *2* weeks to avoid disappointment.

If it's just supposed to be all math - you need X number of calories to gain, X to lose, X to maintain, then what gives?

i think its important to keep in mind, too, that so many things can affect your weight from day to day or week to week.

regardless of how you were eating before, if your body composition requires, say, 1800 calories to maintain its current composition (weight, fat ratio, muscle, tissue, water, etc), and you drop down to 1300 calories a day and do nothing else, you should lose 1 pound in a week. if you go too low, your metabolism drops to compensate for your body's perceived "starvation." if you work out, you burn more calories, but you also build muscle which weighs more than fat and increases metabolism. and other things, especially for women the time of your cycle, water weight/retention, all those things can affect it. thats why i think its important to be patient.

i have friends who have lost you know like 5 or 6 pounds a week, but that is not healthy. ideally you want to lose 1 pound to 2 pounds maximum a week. my trainer really discourages me from losing more than 2 pounds a week, not only because its not healthy but also because statistically and in his own professional experience the people who lose more than that will be much more likely to gain it back.

Me too! I was just thinking this morning how frustrating this whole thing is. I mean, I know we have to be patient and I know we didn't gain the weight overnight so we can't expect to lose it overnight. But seriously, I went from eating probably 1500-2000 calories a day and now I am at a week and a half of no more than 1350 and I thought just that dramatic change would make a tiny difference. I mean there has to be a reason that I weight every thing I eat down to the last slice of cheese or sip of soy milk.

My next official weigh in isn't until next Monday and I did come down a lb. from my start weight this week but a girlfriend who I introduced to spark and who is tracking calories too was all like "wow, I've lost 2 pounds already!" and I was so discouraged because I know she ate and drank a lot over the weekend and doesn't go to the gym at all.

I think it just makes me more fierce about the challenge. I am going to the gym tonight and then I'll go Friday morning before I go to school and hopefully again on Saturday. All I can do is keep up the good eating and really lay in my cardio and wait.

Perseverence my sisters, at least we have each other to commisserate to. We can do it, we will get there!

I'm there with ya.

Technically I don't weigh in until tomorrow morning, but as of today I'm actually UP half a pound. Talk about frustrating.

Have I been perfect? No. Have I been doing better than I was? Absolutely. I feel like my dinners are completely different, I'm excersizing more than I was (as much as I should? Probably not) but....its still frustrating to see that the scale's not budging even a bit - I"m not asking for 5lbs here - I'm asking for 1/2lb!!!

I've been tracking religiously for 2 weeks. (maybe 3?) I keep telling myself - it'll happen. Something will snap and it'll start coming off, but....geez, a teeny bit would be nice!!

this weekend is going to be different. the stat about the extra calories eaten in a weekend adding up to 5 pounds a year slapped me silly...

I'm in the same boat. Last week I hadn't lost anything. My weigh in is tomorrow morning, and I have a feeling that's going to be a bust too, since I really did not keep up with the cardio I should have been doing last week.

no change from last week. NO CHANGE FROM LAST WEEK!! granted, i didn't track my calories last weekend, but i didn't splash out on any completely outrageous food, and NO change from last week? really? honestly? for rillies?

dammit, dammit, dammit, dammit, dammit! so i'm going to the stupid gym and obsessively planning all my stupid meals and counting all these stupid calories for NO CHANGE.

perhaps my rage will burn a calorie or two... dammit!
