I actually went to the gym this morning before I came to the libarary to study and I did 30 minutes of cardio and then abs and stretching. Would have loved to do more but I had a meeting to make at school at 11 and I didn't get my lazy bones out of bed until 7:45! (it takes 30 min+ to get to the gym on the bus and then showering and taking the bus to school after takes a bit of time)

I loved the Friday morning workout though! Since I never have class on Fridays and I always go to the library, I think I am going to try to go every Friday morning. It will get my brain in gear for studying.

last night i went to my new yoga class, and the instructor is somewhere around 70 years old! she herself was motivation right there; i hope i'm that in-shape and healthy when i'm in my 70's. plus, she wasn't all hippified about the yoga practice and was pretty realistic and practical about it. like she used a cheatsheet (like a set list of asanas) taped to the floor to keep her place, walked around the room and corrected people's posture and then barked at us to "don't use this an excuse to get lazy" when people would stop practicing to watch her correct others, and she never once talked about The Universe.

she's a little crazy, but she makes yoga a much more enjoyable experience than i thought it would be.

i'm buying weights to use at home. i just hate the silent weight room too much. it's worth the cash outlay to have weights at home and actually do the exercises than to have the free gym membership and never do the exercises at all.

Okay, I walked for 45 minutes today (and there were some hills). My mom walks to downtown (Portland) every Wednesday, so I will start walking with her halfway every Wednesday. So that's one day down.

We have a nice riverwalk that is just for jogging, walking, biking, etc. so maybe I can plan to walk down there once a week.

I am supposed to get together with another sparkperson tomorrow and go walking w/our kids.

I'll keep you updated. :)

i've been struggling with the regular gym-going, too. i can talk myself into going for the cardio, but i HATE using the weightroom (it's dead silent and i can't lift with my ipod on because i get all tangled, so it's silent and boring).

i just read this article, though, and i really liked it:
https://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/moti
vation_articles.asp?id=759

it talks about building consistency in terms of choosing your actions, rather than relying on the mysterious notion of "motivation" to get you going. something about that idea really clicked with me. like if i say that i have no motivation, it reinforces the lack of motivation and almost legitimatizes my failure to go to the gym. but if i say "i don't want to go to the gym, but i'm choosing to become stronger, and i won't get that from going home and watching t.v., and so i'm going to the gym" then i can both acknowledge that i don't want to go and get myself to go all in one run-on sentence!

i'm going to try it today. i'm going to choose to brave the boring weight room! maybe i'll sing songs in my head...

i just had to make it a habit.
when i first started i would go to the gym around 7 or 8 in the evening (because there were shows on i wanted to watch - every cardio machine at my gym has a personal LCD tv built in) but then it got too easy to just get settled in for the night and slack off. so now i just take my bag to work with me and go right after work. it kind of sucks because thats the busiest time but i deal with it. now its a total habit. im still able to get home by 6:30, so it works out well for me.

if you are too busy to get to the gym or just busy in general then maybe walks on your lunch break or something like that? my sister works out on her hour lunch break for 30 minutes and then takes a shower (but doesnt wash her hair). if you dont have time on your lunch break, do you get a 15 minute break or two? could you do stairs or walk around the building (or outside if its nice enough). what about doing some stretches or other exercises at your desk/office?

i'll say right now, that I should be taking my own advice, BUT - I too find that planning in exercise is the best way to get it in. I try to look at what I have planned for the week and schedule it in when I can.

That being said, I haven't really had the motivation to do anything. I have been going to the gym twice a week (sometimes only for 1/2 hour), which is better than nothing, but I'm struggling with things and i KNOW I'm not going to lose any weight until I seriously start exercising.

The gym is close, I can go right after work if I plan, but my problem lately has been that I just don't feel like I can do it all - cook healthy meals, pack lunches, clean my house, do laundry, keep up with chores, work full time AND workout. I get overwhelmed and instead of trying to chip away at something a bit, I just let it all go - last night I layed in bed ALL NIGHT and crocheted. (and good lord I can't even imagine having a baby to attend to also!!)

Sorry, this turned into my own little pity party rather than helping you! But yeah, plan what you can. How's the weather where you live? Can you walk outside? When I was doing WW a woman SWORE by the "Walk off the Pounds" videos - maybe look into those, I'm sure you don't need much room for them.

Also, try to find alternative ways to get activity in - stairs, parking far away, blah blah. (I live in the land of one story buildings and my parking lot at work is only 10 cars big, so I always laugh at those suggestions).

I was considering posting a challenge - maybe so many minutes of cardio/week? Interested in that?

my motivation? telling the boy that i'm going to ride the exercise bike or whatever. he always says "no you're not. you hate riding that thing/it's too cold to go out and walk/whatever."

i do it to prove him wrong. plus, the bike is easy to fit in. i have scheduled tv time, and i figure i might as well watch the daily show while i ride that stupid bike. (:

::motivation!::

Finding the time to exercise is my personal demon. What with leaving my house between 8 and 9 every morning and not returning home until 6-6:30 its SO hard to not just crash on the couch at night after dinner. It makes it even harder that the gym is a good 20-30 minute drive (it used to be much closer but then we moved) so going to the gym is frequently a 2 hour ordeal.

My strategy is trying to plan specifically when I will go and then go. My husband and I decide in the morning if we want to go that night and then we motivate each other to go. I've also found that having a purpose or something else in your schedule can help. I am more likely to go to the gym if I know I have a class I really want to take or if I am going on a Saturday morning and I know I need to be somewhere at 1, it helps me get to the gym by, say 11:30.

Do you have anyone who might want to walk with you? Could you take your baby out for long walks everyday? Kickboxing sounds like fun, maybe if your apartment is small do it at a time when everyone else is gone?

So far I've gone to the gym once this week, my goal right now is just to make it twice.

I need help with this. I haven't really done any exercise.

I have a kickboxing video that I like, but my apt. is small, and there's no convenient place to do anything like that.

I like walking.

Help. Need. Motivation.
