Everything I have found on the internets (and I did quite a bit of research because I was thinking of buying a digital scale but didn't want to waste my $$) said that those fancy pants electrical current scales are totally inaccurate. It depends on time of day, how much you ate, how much you drank, your menstral cycle. It'll be off completely if you've just showered.

I think it's just a gimic. I guess it could be good for having a rough estimate for where you are, but I wouldn't put stock in it.

It sends an electrical current through your body (foot to foot) and I guess it can measure water vs. fat vs. muscle vs. bone depending on how long it takes to travel through your body. I think.

Anyway, I have it and according to my scale I'm like half fat - which I think is totally wrong (GOD I hope that's wrong!) and it can change depending on how hydrated you are - so, its not totally accurate, but...it can give you a better idea than the regular BMI tables.

And my advice - its not worth paying for the feature.

Its possible to measure those things through contact with the skin. At my gym they use this little thingey you hold in both hands with your palms on the sensors to tell your body fat though I've heard its less accurate than a caliper test.

I don't really care what kind of magic my scale has in it. It said I am now to 145.0 this morning and I'll happily take that!

I didn't know that either. We do have a digital scale and I hate it, its the type that measures hydration and body fat percentage and I just don't find it as accurate or easy to use as a regular old scale. The scale hasn't done any strange acrobatics like that ever since that day but instead the numbers are going down slowly but steadily! I would be worried if I really lost all that weight at once and not really from doing anything.

Well, that's interesting. I didn't know that about digital scales.

I'm way late to the reply, but do you have a digital scale? Analog ones are way more accurate. Digital ones sometimes give wonky readings, and rarely display the same number twice if you weigh yourself within minutes of the last reading unless they have a build in cheat where they display the same # for another number close to the last they read.

Isn't that ridiuclous?

a couple of thoughts...

I've heard that many people gain/lose 5 pounds over the course of a day, maybe you are just special?

or:

I'm not sure how your scale works, but sometimes things like leaning over to read the measurement can render it inaccurate. Maybe have your husband read the scale for you while you stand up straight looking straight ahead?

Could be water weight.
Could be a wonky scale too - sometimes if mine isn't sitting exactly flat or I don't stand right it gives me a weird reading.

I am a little weirded out right now. A few days ago I was 150 according to my scale. Last night I weighed myself at about 8PM just for kicks and the scale said 142.8. Whaaaat???? I'm usually MUCH heavier at night and I ate right all day and I drank all my water. I went out dancing last night (had enough calories to even have one beer yay!) and when I got home at 2AM I was 141.8. Ok, what's up with that? When I weighed myself this morning I was back up to 148. I am not going to do another "official" weigh in until next Monday but I am a little weirded out by somehow getting 10 pounds lighter over the course of one day and then going back up that 10 pounds.

Can anyone explain this phenomenon to me? Is it water weight? What's going on with me!
