Jen, you are not alone in this issue. A lot of women have to deal with this and so therefore there is a lot of support and treatment available to you. Keep on breathing........listen to the docs and try to stay as calm as possible. I wish I could do more, but all I can do is send good vibes your way. emoticon

Not good news, two readings were high, so I'm being referred to a diabetes unit. :(

I survived!

Breathing is good. I got pretty nauseous from all that sugar, and I almost fainted in the second hour, but I made it thru!

Now I just gotta hope for passing numbers... :: Fingers crossed::

Jen, I'm thinking of you!!! I know it's hard, but focus on your breath. That usually helps me to relax if I just focus on the breath in and out.....in and out..... :) emoticon

Good luck Heather!

Lapperoo, it's testing for gestational diabetes, so it's a little different. It's based on the blood glucose levels a measured amount of time after consuming a measured amount of glucose.

I'm sitting in the office now waiting for the phlebotomist. Wish me luck

Hi guys!! I got the call back for the second interview earlier than I thought I would!! They want to see me sometime next Mon, Tues, or Wed. I'm available all day every day!! :) I sure hope this is as good as it sounds!

Today I went to a Chamber of Commerce meeting. I'm still working on building the small CPA practice because I like the idea of being somewhat independent and maybe working to being fully independent in the next few years. I just have to have a full time job bringing in real money until I can get enough clients to survive.

I'm also working on candles!! I got the new scent for a special order (it went to the wrong address first and finally the supplier sent it to me this week). I also have shows the next three weekends and I'm really excited about that. I love selling the candles in person!

I also have started working out in the morning because I really love starting the day with a workout and I can right now!

Have a great evening everyone!!

Hi All,

Been busy with things and not much free time to chat here.

Jen: Usually an A1C test is used for diagnosing diabetes. It is sort of a picture of the past 3 months and not affected by how you're feeling today or the day of the blood draw. Some things you can do to try to lower it:
- diet using the GI (glycemic index) of 45 or below. Check out this website recommended by
my bariatric doctor.
- Exercise: 30 mins or more per day of aerobic exercise (walking is great while pregnant).
- Get 8 hours of sleep per night
- Check out this film/documentary: That Sugar Film --available on Netflix, YouTube,
Amazon and more places. See below.
I had to watch it twice to take in all the information in it. The first viewing just shocked my senses. It put all the points of low sugar --the same points my doctor has been trying to get me to understand and apply in a format that I could now appreciate. What I thought was a healthy diet but actually wasn't. When I apply the techniques of low carbs along with a low GI index I both lose weight as well as lower my sugar levels.
My husband, a physician, recommended this film to me. He watched it and it really helped him to make changes --he's a sugar/sweet person vs savory. It helped him to eliminate the excuses he was making for himself. (He's able to be stricter with his patients but not necessarily apply it to himself.)

The good news is that you CAN reverse this. Granted--harder when you're pregnant but it can be done.

The blood tests I'm totally with you. I faint getting almost any blood draw. I am doing better using a form of hypnotherapy on myself. I visualize myself being in control, relaxed and doing just great with the blood draw. Tell them about your anxiety--lots of people have this. Talk about something while they start with the tourniquet. Ask them questions about their kids, hobbies, their holiday weekend, etc. Keeping your mind on something else will help you get through it.

I recently had to have a couple of CT scans which meant IVs and blood tests. I did great!!! Best I've ever done. Each time you succeed in not panicking makes it easier the next time.

That Sugar Film
2014 ‧ Documentary ‧ 1h 42m
Filmmaker Damon Gameau documents the effects of eating supposedly healthy foods that contain high amounts of sugar.
Initial release: February 2015 (Australia)
Director: Damon Gameau
Featured song: That Sugar Song
Distributed by: Soda Pictures (UK, Ireland & Canada), Samuel Goldwyn Films (USA), Madman Entertainment (Australia)

Hope this helps you. Congrats on "Nugget" BTW: ginger helps with nausea. Sailors used it for sea sickness.

Haha...you sound like me with blood pressure! My husband and I have always joked that if I ever get high blood pressure the docs will think I'm stroking...and here I suddenly have high blood pressure! I had to tell the doctor not to take my blood pressure until the end of the exam...it was still ridiculously high. Now, even taking it at home is a trial...sigh

Oh, so good news! I've been planning travel for my Italian family that's coming in August! I've rented a house in Napa and we'll take them wine and food pairing, tasting and sightseeing, then to Paso Robles, Santa Barbara, back up to Cambria and stay in a gorgeous lodge. Then we head over to Yosemite where I found a large cabin right near the entrance!!! We'll go see the giant redwoods and go hiking! Then to Big Sur, Monterey and whale watching, then to San Francisco. Doesn't that sound like an awesome two-week trip?! My hubby's father lives near San Francisco (just a short train ride into the city) and hubby is an excellent tour guide. Our Prunedale house is 20 minutes from Monterey and our King City house is a mile from Paso Robles. So the trip won't cost them anything!

Thanks Carol, I will totally be willing to talk you down in turn

I do try to keep an eye on the types of carbs I eat and they're glycemic index. I hadn't been doing that as much with the nausea - instead eating whatever settled ok in my stomach and was an attempt at balanced nutrition. But the nausea is going away too which helps get back to things like my heartier grains.

I also learned this morning (because I'm a researcher at heart) that epinephrine triggers the breakdown of glycogen, which in turns raises blood glucose, in preparation for flight... In other words, my panic attack just before the blood draw, could have skewed my results.

We'll find out for sure on Thursday. Until then, I'm being on my best sugar behavior!

Oh Jen, I feel for you! I have major white coat syndrome from getting hit by a car at thirteen and breaking more than thirty bones, stuck in a hospital over the holidays. I can shoot my blood pressure up just by thinking about going to the doctors-sigh. Haha...blood draws, however don’t bother me a bit...I like to watch. They use new tech toys to do it. Are you watching the glycemic table of the foods you’re eating? That will help. Remember, the docs are going to help you get through this. Keep up your walking and you’ll get through it.

And on Friday when I go back to the doctors for my test results you can talk me back down - lol.

Heather - I hope you find that perfect job! I know it’s out there for you.

I went out yesterday and started to prepare for our Italian family to come...I bought $500 in California wines! Lol

Hi folks

Heather, that sounds like a nice Sunday indeed :) I love rhododendrons

Carol, yeah nugget is what's kinda suck hehehe

It's been an odd weekend for me. I'm feeling better so able to do more things, but my booth got wiped out by a heavy storm before the car show even started yesterday and I got bad news about my glucose test. I have to go back in for a 3 hour test this week and watch my sugar intake until then. Which just feels like a punch in the gut.

I thought I was doing better with my food choices overall and I just can't shake the thought that it's not gestational diabetes but rather I've been diabetic already and it was just undiagnosed.

And I made the mistake of looking up the test and scared the bejeebus out of myself because it's a total of 4 blood draws in one test. I don't know how I'm going to get the this. Just the thought makes my heart race and I feel sick :(

Good Morning and Happy Memorial Day! I hope everyone is having a nice holiday.

CONGRATS Kourtney!!!! I'm so happy for you!!! Enjoy the time knowing the job is there and you'll soon have new and interesting challenges! You've managed to do what I've dreamed of doing the last two times around, which is nailing down the job then taking a little time to yourself before it starts. I've done that before, and it's really a great way to start. Unfortunately the last two for me weren't as positive and they pushed for an earlier start date, so I didn't get to do what I wanted. This time I'm sure gonna try!!

Yesterday we went to Lowe's to see what we could do about getting some plants as cheaply as we could. We headed over to the clearance racks and found rhododendrons that were initially $65 marked down to $20. They were fundamentally OK, but they had finished flowering and didn't look as nice as they did before. The guy who worked there came over and said if we'd take 4 or more he'd discount them to $10 each!! So we took four!! We got four nice big plants with real impact in the garden for less than one would have cost full price. Yay!! Then we went home and planted in the rain. It was so much fun!! It wasn't pouring, just a little misty. It was a really fun Sunday!

Today is more planting, a little shopping for food, probably a little client work, scoping out jobs to apply to tomorrow (I read the best time to apply is Tuesday at 10 am, go figure), and being in the moment. Oh, and ribs! Oh, and ice cream making!! That's our holiday tradition, ribs and home made ice cream!!

Have a great day and week everyone!!
