Hubby is pretty busy, and we're working well as a team! He's designing my business cards, working on the advertising process with me, taking care of our gardens (which we have both sadly not had much time for the last 5 years), and doing his own work to prepare for his show coming up. He also works at a CSA in the workshare program. He gives them 4 hours a week of hard labor (tee hee) and in return we get a full share of the CSA. We get more fresh organic veggies than we can eat every week! This year we're working on a better plan to utilize all of the veggies so nothing goes to waste. We're coming up with solid meal and recipe plans to use up all of the produce weekly.

Yeah, Heather, I'm with Kourtney, get hubby to help! With me taking a new job and Tom working part-time, he even makes my doctor's appointments right now! He also has dinner planned, or made and does stuff like trades my car for the truck to get my oil changed. It's sooo helpful!

It makes sense that DC doesn't pay bonuses. Ag is definitely an interesting and crazy industry. This is the first company I haven't had a company car in probably 30 years...well, I didn't at Rocket, but I was within walking distance. But, one more year and I'm done! With my path, I never could have been done by 35...then again, I wouldn't have wanted to be. I had a children's gym at that point and it was a wonderful experience, though not a lot of money.

Yes Kourtney, CONGRATULATIONS!!! Get in all the classes, do lots of work out, read a book or ten!

Jen, it's definitely changed over the years as far as degreed or not degreed at jobs goes. I'm amazed at how many young people now have master's degrees. It doesn't really buy them much because they don't come with a plan. I have a clerk in my office who just finished her MBA but she's not worth paying more...I'd pay a lot more for someone with experience and no degree!

So exciting to hear the baby's heartbeat! You call it Nugget? That is adorable!

Life is not a journey to the grave with intentions of arriving safely in a pretty well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming ... WOW! What a ride!

Congrats Kourtney! That is excellent!!

Heather, good luck in getting it all done!

I'm so very ready for the weekend. I have a fair amount of good social and active activities lived up and my energy seems to be bouncing back.

I had another visit with the ob this morning and all is going well, I got to hear nugget's heartbeat for the first time which was really cool. They also did glucose testing on me which required fasting and a blood draw, which did not go smoothly, I got through it, they got most of what they needed (I'll have to do another draw for one of the genetic tests), but I'm just spent after that. I want a warm, sunny, quiet place to lay down and recoup...

Hi all,

I accepted the offer from company “K!!!!” My interviews with IH confirmed my concerns and I immediately went and signed the offer with K. I’m very, very excited and the start date is 6/18. Now I have 24 days to lounge about. Gonna garden and read and work out a TON.

SQUEEEE!!!

Heather - can your husband help step in at all? I ask bc when things were getting crazy with job searching, mike stepping in to do more than his fair share was SOOOO helpful (and of course in his best interest, as it helped me accelerate my search and find a job).

What do you guys have planned for the holiday weekend? We are planting the garden Saturday (tomatoes, peppers, leafy greens, and a tbd fun item we’ve never done) and have friends coming over to grill and relax on Monday.

xoxo

Hi all! I hope everyone is getting ready for a busy or just relaxing weekend! I've been working on clients and organization of my practice today, so I feel good about that. Later today I have two meetings with clients and I have a few invoices to send out. I'm not making a killing, yet, but I'm slowly working this process.

I honestly have so much to do it's overwhelming. Between learning to market our candle and art business, market my CPA practice, do the actual CPA work I have, look for a permanent job and do all of the house things I have to do, I'm just amazed at how much there is to do. The only way to get through it all is to be organized and pay attention to what needs to be done when.

I'm going to get in a good workout today!!!

Yesterday I danced for my workout, and we really worked hard and it was a really good workout!! I enjoyed it a lot!!

Have a great weekend everyone!!! Oh, and Kourtney, I've got my fingers crossed for you that you get the offers you want and it all works out great! That positive energy is contagious!

Carol, it totally depends on the industry and also the company here in the NYC area. Most larger organizations say they have bonuses that are 20% or so, but many of them then don't actually pay that high. Most of the smaller places don't have bonuses.

The financial services industry, otherwise known as Wall Street, has enormous bonuses, often half or more of the salary, sometimes a whole heck of a lot more than the salary......but that's the nature of Wall Street. Back in DC, bonus just really was never part of the package, at least at the level I was working then. Also, there's no such thing as bonus in government work, and so employers in DC don't have to give bonuses because the major player in the game, the Federal Gov't, doesn't do bonuses.

If I had my life to do over, I would have gotten an accounting degree, then I would have gotten an MBA in Finance and gone to Wall Street. I would have ground it out for 10 years and made enough so that I could do other less intense things for the rest of my life. That's what a few of my friends did, and they are set for life from working like dogs from college through about 35 or so years old. But, I didn't know how to do that, so now I'm here doing what I'm doing!! Thankfully I actually like accounting work......speaking of work.......

Clearly I did not choose the right career! lol

bonuses? what are those! PTO? only 80 hrs and it's accrued, so I never have much available.

bah... I'm struggling a bit with feeling crochety about it all. But I'll try to think positive thoughts and keep my fingers crossed for a good stroke of luck. My strongest background is in customer service, but in my area many of the jobs are in banking - which I'm just never really a good personality fit for. I think I'd do well in non-profit community based work, but those types of jobs are hard to find.

I did get a good long walk with a friend tonight though. She's looking for a better accounting job right now too. She always feels she has a hard time because she never went to college, but I honestly think her years of experience are quite enough to make up for it at this point.

Haha, no, I'm not looking. This will be my last "job". I plan to stay until after the new year (bonuses are at the end of the year). I was placed by a recruiter and so I'm obligated to stay a year. We just paid her $21k bill...so it's expensive to place someone like me. I did get a job offer today - haha...it was good too. But I want to retire and start my own businesses. AND I want to travel and move to different parts of our country and others. Do you know it's cheaper for us to go somewhere else than live in our (no mortgage) house?! We can get so much for rent, it pays for rent and living in a cheaper area! Ah, coastal California!

Heather - Do you get good bonuses on your side of the states? Ag usually pays about 20% or better of the base salary a year. It's fun!

Kourtney - I'm so happy the classes are working for you! You'll be working in no time and will be comfortable paying your way soon. I'm just so happy I could make it a little easier for you! I just want you to be happy!

Kourtney, I am absolutely still looking!! One thing I've learned the hard way over the last few years is you can be at the top of the list, and everyone you meet loves you, and then one person has whatever issue, and it doesn't come through. The level of the jobs I'm applying to means there's fierce competition with a lot of qualified people and it can come down to things that are out of my control, so I never bank on anything until I sign the letter.

That said, I don't have any other interviews this week. I'm not getting as many this time, but I'm also being a tad more choosy about the places I apply. The scattershot method of applying everywhere and going on every potential interview hasn't worked too well for me. It helps that I have client work that keeps a little extra cash coming in.

I'm so happy it's working out great for you so far and I know one of the two will be awesome!!! I like the positive momentum and I'll channel that for myself!! :)

Carol, all I want is an ethical and normal company that is professional and understands that I have some expertise to lend to the situation. The last two places the Presidents yelled at me when they didn't like my feedback. Really? I don't actually need that!!!

And are you looking again Carol? I think I missed something.......

Jen - *hugs* some states have disability setup such that you can supplement. It's pretty state-specific though (resisting the urge to go on a rant about that..). This site www.blr.com/Compensation/Dis
criminatio
n/Maternity-and-Pregnancy
has some good state-by-state details. Also RE us being good at resumes and stuff - honestly most hiring stuff falls down to what area of the market you're in, how much hiring is happening in your geographical area, and luck. I'd love to pretend that me finding something has to do with me (and that isn't to say that I didn't put in work!) but there's sooooo much luck involved.

Heather - So glad the interview went well! I was wondering about you this morning and came to check and was relieved to see it went well. :D Waiting til 6/5 to hear is a pain, though. I'm not nearly that patient. Are you going to keep looking at other places in the meantime? And I feel ya on both the wishing you had left on your own terms and the joy (for lack of a better word) of seeing them struggle w/o you. We're both onto better things.

Carol - thank you again for your gift! I used one this morning :D. What I like about this chain is that it's so HR focused and so you know that you're getting a d@mn good workout. AND they keep all your stats in an online dashboard (and you can add stats for out-of-studio work), which really soothes the data-focused part of me lol. I'm going again Friday morning. Oh, and you're crazy for liking interviews. I like them b/c of the things you can learn, but I find them EXHAUSTING and so that usually tips the scale. You're looking again? But I thought you just started somewhere?

***

My parents were in town this past weekend, and it was good to see them but it's nice to have them gone again. We didn't do anything too exciting, just spent time together which was nice.

omg male turkeys are so noisy. We have a crotchety one in our backyard who really has a lot to say. Every day. Morning, noon, and night.

Anywho, job things are going well. There are 2 companies that are my top 2, let's call them K and IH. Both are startups (my previous job was a startup too), but fairly far along (series D and E, for those interested).

K gave me an offer on Monday and it's everything I want and I'd start 6/18 and I'm very excited about it. The official paperwork came in today and I'm really excited by the team I'd be working with, think the company has a super clear and likely to succeed business model, etc.

IH, on the other hand, has a mission I'm really drawn towards and I have a 3hr in-person interview with them tomorrow morning. I didn't get a great vibe by my initial interview, though, but I often feel you learn FAR more from the long in-person interviews.

SO my plan is to rock the IH interview and make a decision right after. If I want IH, I'll poke on getting an offer asap and if I get one, decline K. If I want K, then I'll officially sign the paperwork.

So fingers crossed that all of this ish is settled by EOW :D.

Other than the IH interview, this week is pretty free and clear of work stuff. So I've been cleaning around the house and spending time in the garden. It's HOT today an dI just spent the last several hours weeding. I'm trying to psych myself up for doing some more, but I'm not sure if it's gonna happen...

xoxo

California might be a pain in some ways, but we do take care of both new moms and dads. Your job is protected and you can take intermittent leave. We pay high taxes here and one is for disability, which covers pregnancy. Depending on what youve paid in, you can receive up to about $5k a month and has a max time of 52 weeks...or longer if youre taking it intermittently.

Yep, nerd controller here. In Cali you can be off for months, both men and women for baby bonding. It can make staffing difficult, but I am one of the most kid friendly employers that I know.

Haha Heather I was cracking up at your cash flow issues! We are doing the exact same thing here...but these guys get that its a problem and are totally behind me fixing it. One partner says to tell him how big of a hammer Id like him to swing!

I will keep my fingers crossed, but if the headhunter says youre top, Im sure youre good to go!

Good vibes to you too Kourtney! I hope that perfect job comes your way!

It is a funny group here...Three of us job searching at the same time! Though I wanted to take 5 months off first...

Jen, most people have no coverage at all in America for maternity leave, which is insane. That said, only half the salary for six weeks is a paltry benefit. Most of the companies I've worked for allow you to save up and use PTO while you are out on FMLA for up to 12 weeks. I don't know your situation at all, maybe you don't earn PTO, but you should carefully look at the policies at your company and make sure you do everything you can to maximize the payments while you are on leave.

Well, the interview went great!!!! I really liked the woman who interviewed me. She's the Director of HR and actually would report to me if I'm hired. It's a very lean company but it's so polished and professional. I love it! The headhunter tells me I'm at the top of their list! Woo hoo!! I find out June 5th if I get to go back for interviews with the Managing Partners. That's the soonest they can all get together to review candidates, likely due to vacations around the holiday. That's OK, I can wait!!

I heard from a former manager of mine at the company that let me go last month that shockingly they are still having cash flow problems. I think they honestly thought I wasn't doing everything in my power to improve the bottom line and the cash flow together. I know most of you aren't accountants and this won't be clear to everyone, but you can't have customers pay in 60, 90 or more days as their regular terms and have vendors at 30 days or on prepayment and not have a cash flow problem. Ya can't blame that one on the accountant when AR over 60 days is at 2%!!! I'm so glad I'm gone from there, I just wish I could have left on my own terms......

Client work for the rest of the day, and then a workout later.

Send good vibes my way on this potential job, because it would be awesome if I could get it!!!

Hi folks,

I got my outdoor swim the other night and tonight looks promising for a walk! My back is feeling a bit better too. Gotta keep stretching

Carol, I found a mom's group center nearby that offers pre-natal yoga and I've been tempted. Of course I can always go to the y and modify poses as needed.

You guys and your interviews! I feel like I rarely get that far... My resume and cover letter skills must not be very good.

I'm kinda freaking out at the realization that I don't have maternity coverage here, only short term disability that I pay for and will pay out half my salary.... Ugh. Gotta figure out something better. And maybe look into state assistance programs.

Can I just run away to Canada? It's too cold there though...

Carol, I love interviews too. I love thinking about how I can help the company and how my skills and abilities can help them grow. I've just made bad decisions on offers the last two times because I've been freaked out, no matter how much I told myself to relax. This time, I'm actually relaxed.

I'm so excited for this interview today. I got the job description and they could have written it with me in mind. I hit every point that they need and I have the detailed hands-on skills plus the management and communication skills needed to do this job really well. It's a highly professional team, and that's what's been missing the last two times. Wish me luck at 1 pm EDT today!! My hope is in a few months my employer is saying the same thing about me that yours is saying about you Carol.

I'm sending out love and caring to all of you today. This little team of people are so important to me. I hope you all have fantastic days!!

And Carol, I'm sure you've planned that retirement really well!!! She may have something to learn from you......

Yay for interviews at good companies!!!

Okay, we all know I'm twisted...but I LOVE interviews! I love both sides! I get totally energized when I'm interviewing because I start thinking about what it would be like to change my life by working at the new place and what my background and abilities could bring to them.

Jen - Sorry to hear you didn't do better, but that is the way some of those fairs go for sure. I took pregnancy yoga classes when I was pregnant and it helped tremendously. I'm sure there are online ones now!

Lap - Beautiful bracelet!

My new job is going along brilliantly! They thank me all the time for what I'm bringing to the organization - lol. I've never gotten so much praise! I will leave them in a better place than when I found them to be sure. I won't stay that long though.

We meet with a financial planner in early July to get her take on our shape for retirement! I'm excited for this meeting. I think it will be really good to get a professionals opinion on what I've laid out over the years. Plus, social security calculations are very tricky and she's an expert in that piece.

Hi folks

Yay Kourtney! That's fantastic! I hope it's a great offer!

Sounds like everyone had a pretty decent weekend :)

I had another art fair this weekend, they invoked the Sunday rain date which I was glad got, but I didn't quite make my booth fee so that's a bummer.

I have another event this weekend, a car show, and then that's all I had signed up for before finding out I was pregnant.

My back hurt pretty bad most of the weekend, I'm pretty sure on account of too much rest. So I'm working on gentle activity and stretching.

The weather looks good for an outdoor swim tonight! *Fingers crossed*

I took too long to post my chat thread, and Carol got one up before I finished! So, here's what I wrote over there.

Also, yay Kourtney!!!

Good Morning everyone!!! I'm so busy I can hardly keep everything organized!! Personally we had a dance competition with the kid over the weekend, and it was actually a lot of fun. It might have been more fun because I know it's our last regional competition :) We only have nationals, which is a totally different kind of experience, and then we are done with competition dance! We have to tell the dance school this week.....not really looking forward to that.

I have candle orders to make (yay), shows the next three weekends (not this one but the first three in June), then hubby has an art show. I have a lot of client work to do! And, I have an interview tomorrow for an amazing job opportunity. I am so busy I almost need to hire someone to help me!! LOL, not really........there's no money for that yet!!

The sun is shining, the vibes are positive, and I'm really looking forward to this week! The treadmill beckons too!!

I hope everyone else is doing well. Kourtney keep up the energy. Interviewing is just exhausting. It's hard to continually get excited and show enthusiasm for each of the jobs, but you have to do it. Try hard not to get too attached to any one job. The disappointment of not getting something I really wanted was tiring the last time around for me. This time I'm taking a steadier approach to every interaction. Enthusiasm and telling them what I can do to help them reach their goals is important in the interview, and then I let it go. I hope you're getting closer to a great job!!

Have a FUN and ACTIVE week!!!

Good morning fishies! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend, I know I did! I did a bunch of research into different things and also got all of the California trip booked for when my Italian family comes to visit!

I really didn't get much exercise this weekend, which is unusual for me. We only worked on the house a little. Next I'll start working on the yard and that will be a really good work out.

I love that our team is full of artists! One of the things I was researching this weekend was dichroic glass work. I've got it in my head that I want to make glass, mosaic tiles for an inset in our fireplace mantel. My sister and I have a large kiln...but then I saw one for glass that works in the microwave! I think my husband will have fun with this too! I got him a pen with gold that you can draw with.

Kourtney - I got you the 10 pack for your gym! They said they'd email you with instructions. Now go work out!
