Yeah Kourtney, just keep posting regularly and we will try to help you stay accountable.

Heather - That's great that you haven't tipped into being a diabetic, now you just have to do the work to stay on this side and you know how to do it.

Maybe we should do a weight loss challenge and post our pounds lost and exercise hours or something since it sounds several of us are doing the weight loss thing. I've been struggling with food because I seem to be developing other (new) food intolerances...and there's so few things I can eat now. I just want to give up eating altogether! I've put on some pounds because I've been concentrating on what I'm eating...that apparently makes me eat more.

Thank you for all the sweet thoughts, everyone!

My first week didn't go quite as planned... I did lose a few pounds but more from happenstance than b/c I was eating better or anything. To be honest, I probably overestimated how much I could do in my 1st week (yay medical recoveries...).

A friend gave me the idea to finally try personal training, and that feels like it might be a good way to get back into working out. I found 2 women-centered gyms that offer PT - 1 near home and 1 near work. I'm going to compare prices and times and whantot, then choose one and give it a try for a couple months.

For now, I'm trying to focus on the week ahead and set a few goals:
* find a place to do PT and do 1 session
* walk for 90min (or elliptical for 60 min)
* log my food 5 of 7 days
* post in this group 3x

Mkay, after taking some time off last week for medical schtuff I have some things I need to get done today, so back to work!

xoxo

Hi all! I've missed you this week! I took a few days off and really enjoyed myself. I've got so much going on, I sometimes can't even keep up with myself!

The most important thing to share is I had a physical and I am in fact not diabetic. I am borderline, but not over the line. With better food choices, exercise and weight loss I can reverse all of the slight health issues I have. I know I can do this, because I've done it before. It's just a matter of a little focus and discipline.

A few random responses to all the info below:

Congrats on the new job Carol!

I was married in the Episcopal church, and my MIL was a deacon, so we have one other person here connected to that church. We don't actively attend though.

Kourtney, I'm glad to see you here. Not sure what's going on, but you know we love you and care about supporting you.

I need to start using HIIT in my workouts!!

Lynn, take it easy on those knees!!

Lap, have a great trip!! Your life sounds very interesting.

Have a great weekend everyone! I'm going into Manhattan tomorrow to take my kid to Columbia so she can take a test to see if she can get into their High School Science Honors Program to take some courses there. Wish us luck!!

Hi everybody!

Two swims this week - grateful for both of them!

Jen - I am also an Episcopalian. Church is always fun on Easter!

Just did my morning yoga: been doing it every morning since July and my body loves it!

Have a great weekend everyone.

Carol....Sounds like a great place to work. Nice to not have a drama-like environment as well. Makes ALL the difference in the world.

I unofficially pulled out of the half marathon race due to my knee issue. I overstretched it after a ten mile run and injured the area JUST above the knee. Maybe hyperextension, not sure. There has been much debate about stretching after working out. Where once they told you to do it, now so called "experts" are dissing it, saying it makes you more prone to injury. OK...I am on their side now!!!! It's not terribly bad....in fact, mild. But when I run just 3 miles EASY, with walking, it starts to bark at me after I've cool down. Even with new shoes, KT Tape, icing and elevating afterwards. And that will last for three days after! So I can only imagine what 13.1 miles with minimal training would do to it. Not worth the risk!

So swam on Monday and hoping to get back in the water today. CAROL....I'm the opposite of you....I've got the Cardio.....but I really need to work on strength ..... Hoping to start at the beginner level on hasfit.com and work from there.....

Kourney - Hi!!! I'm sorry you had "bad" going on in your life, but I'm glad to see you turning back here for support, because you know we will! You know how to do this, just keep it going.

Lynn - Awesome on the weight loss! Even if you did gain some on vacation, you sound like you're keeping it under control. 94! My MIL is also 94, but sadly, she is failing. My FIL at 96 is amazing considering he works on a family DNA mapping project and still plays tennis!

The first day of the new job was great! Everyone seems very nice and the office is known for no drama. I have a young Indian gentleman for my clerical supervisor and it's nice to have a guy in that position to mellow out all the estrogen in the office. They bought five companies and folded them into the one...so they have lots of work to meld everything together. It's looking really interesting.

Jen - It really sounds like you are striking a good balance in your life! I need to add stretching to my life...I need to set that intention.

Lap - It sounds like your coaches know what they are doing and that's great! I bet your stamina is increasing and you'll see it once you get a few months under your belt. Now that I'm not doing the house flipping full time, I will need to go back to doing some HIIT myself. I have my bike set up on a stand and I think I'll use that.

I'm out of cardio shape, but I'm strong and can stand hours of sustained work. I just need to add some cardio and lose some weight. I've been struggling with my food intolerances and am reacting to something in my (already very limited) diet. I've moved to what I call the "weirdo" protocol, which is fasting for three days, veggies only for two weeks, then adding some proteins with nuts and fish predominantly for four weeks. It will be good, I'll lose some weight and hopefully stabilize my gut. Then I'll have to do testing to see what's up - sigh.

Hi All,
I hope everyone had a great Easter/Passover weekend. We had such beautiful weather here in Charlotte, NC. The pool is closed this week and I miss my swimming. I'm doing some weights and calisthenics in the meantime. I've also been working on getting more sleep each night. We'll see how this helps me when the pool reopens next week.

Calgalfox: thanks for the info on HIIT. I hadn't thought of that for swimming but that's what the coach has been having me do to increase my speed. I swim 1/2 a lap at my strong steady pace & at the halfway mark I pour on the steam; return the same way. It's improved my time. The other instructor is having me swim varying lengths and varying speeds. I don't know how you do 600 yards and still feel like you could do more, TennisWhiz. I look forward to the day that I can say that. Inspiration for me, that you are!

Kourtney: Sometimes the bad things happening in our lives kicks our butts in gear to do what we should be doing for ourselves. Can be a painful way to get the kick but if it brings about something good, go for it. I hope you set up a long term goal and then set several small goals on the way to the big goal.

I set the goal to get out of the BMI saying I'm overweight and into the "Normal" range and today I finally hit the mark--just. Now the next goal is to take off another 10 lbs. I've dropped 10 lbs since Dec 1st which is no small feat given (according to my doctor) my "advanced years". I turned 70 in December 2017. I also have a metabolic imbalance in which my body thinks it's starving and keeps shutting down the metabolism. Dieting alone does not accomplish much but the combination of 1 hr a day of exercise with a low carb, low GI diet and medication has been the right formula for me. So I've now lost 36 lbs and have a good 20+ lbs to go. Actually it's visceral fat we're concerned with and doc uses an impedance device to measure --not lbs but I can only measure by pounds.

So I hope you have good success with your renewed commitment. I know how hard it can be and stress works against you.

I'm headed to Atlanta this weekend and then on to Auburn University with my husband. Husband will be giving a talk, introducing a film and then answering questions on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. We have become good friends with a couple down there (one has CFS) and I'm looking forward to having a little time to spend with them. I am a metalsmith and will be teaching them a bit about soldering. So we get to work and play on this trip.

Well, it's late and I need to hit the hay. Have a great Wednesday!

Hi folks!

Kourtney, I've thought of you and missed seeing you on here. I hope the restart will help bring things around

I had a good Easter weekend with a swim and yard work and studio time. I went to the formal service (Episcopal) on Sunday and it was really lovely with the full choir and horns and my Dad on timpani.

I couldn't get to the y last night on account of scheduling, but I'll make it on Friday. Till then, I hope to get some morning yoga in at least before work

Hello, Carol! We did an Easter "Linner" at a nice restaurant with my 94 year old MIL. Best wishes on your new job!

Kourt.... Best wishes to you on our restart to healthy living. Been there many a time and it's never too late and never too many restarts! Been trying to get back on track myself. I did lose 12 lbs since Christmas on WWs.....Not an astounding amount given I started nearly 4 months ago!!! But went on vacation and gained some back, so a bit of a set back.

Swam yesterday after being off several weeks (Kourtney...had just started going back!) and I was surprised how I could handle a 600 yard non-stop swim! It was slow and easy, but it had great endurance. I could have continued....but didn't want to push the shoulder too much as it was getting tired...but not sore. Hopefully, the more I do this the stronger it will become.

Morning all,

I've been having some personal stuff - first good then bad - going on. As a result, I've got a couple months to focus on myself. I'm hoping to be around here more, because I'll need the support and accountability.

With these couple months of self-focus, I'm going to try to get back into eating better and working out. I'll start with getting in more walking and then (hopefully) work up to swimming again.

xoxo

Lapp - The fastest way to build stamina is using HIIT (high-intensity interval training). You can do it in the pool, on a bike, or running. In the pool, swim like a shark is chasing you for one length, then backstroke back and a good pace, but enough to (almost) catch your breath. Do this 5 times if you can. You should fail sooner each time. You can look up lots of info on Google.

Good morning fishies! I hope everyone had a great Easter weekend. Since our kids are grown and gone, we don't really do anything for Easter anymore. What do you guys do to celebrate?

I'm sore today since I worked on refinishing my kitchen cupboards this past weekend. It was a great work out of sustained movement over ten hours a day. I'm doing taxes today, so I'm sitting on my bottom. I'm just about finished and then I'll be putting up a cupboard in the laundry room.

I start a new job on Wednesday! Haha, so much for retirement! One more year, I guess. We have started a travel fund and agreed that half my earnings go in the travel fund, then September of 2019 we'll do a big trip.
