Hi Folks,
I missed your post and thankfully one of you mentioned it in this week's thread. I'll post this under both weeks.

Thank you for your responses. I
Calgalfox: I'll give your practice suggestions a try. My stroke of the day clinic coach is seeing improvements in my technique on freestyle so she started me on breaststroke and do I ever need help on that one! I can't seem to get the arms and legs together in the glide portion of the stroke. She broke the stroke down and we worked on the arms and think I understand that part but the legs are a whole other problem. She said this is a hard stroke to learn so to be patient. I think I need to see it in a video that I can stop to get the idea of when/where the hands are in relation to the kick/legs.

I also learned I am supposed to be blowing out bubbles while I have my face in the water. I was holding my breath. After several days of working on this it seems I'm getting the hang of it but I still want to hold the breath so have to keep telling myself to blow bubbles.

I need to build up endurance to swim 200 meters. I can do 50 but start fatiguing on the 75 to 100. Coach says I'm swimming too fast but I only know one speed. She said I had to work on swimming slowly so I can get the rhythms smooth and correct some techniques and then we'll work on speed. I haven't ever thought about speed, I just swim, so this is also new for me.

Heathhill: I began taking swim classes in late January and know I've made some progress but having the stroke clinic is really making a difference for me. I could barely make 50 meters back in April but I'm able to do that fairly easily and am working on building to 100.

I'm really enjoying learning all this. Any websites or specific YouTube places I should look at?

Thanks, again, everyone.

Lapperoo, what I did was practice my techniques for a half hour and then swim concentrating on that technique for half an hour. I type in google: swim technique drills, choose two drills and put them on a 3 x 5 card inside of a plastic bag. I put that at the end of my lane and work first the one, then the other alternating. Then when during my 30 minute straight swim, I try to incorporate one then both. I found that trying to do more than two I would lose focus.

During the half hour straight swim portion, I only allowed myself to stop at the end of the pool when I couldn't go any further and I would count to ten at a normal count and swim again. After about six months I didn't need the drills and I could swim for an hour straight. I just kept telling myself I'd get there if I kept at it...and I did.

Have fun! and remember we're here for you!

Hi Lapperoo!!! Well, the team used to be a lot more active, but it seems there are fewer and fewer interactions. However, if you are up for conversing, then so are we!

We have this weekly chat thread where we talk about all kinds of things, including our workouts, our swimming, our kids, our work, our animals, and on and on.

We usually respond to threads where people ask for feedback. But, it's been pretty quiet around here. Maybe we just need to post up a bit more on threads other than the chat thread and get a little more activity here.

We have some forums where you can go to look at threads that talk about workout ideas, stroke definitions and information. We don't do a lot of talk on instruction, but a few folks here can give some specific feedback on questions on technique if you ask.

So, I'll work a little harder on responding and getting some more activity on the team! We are happy to have you!!

Hello Group,

I was just reading through some of the conversations. Congratulations Heathhill on 10 years!
That is some track record.

I'm new to swimming and fairly new here. For what it's worth: I haven't found much response to my joining. I am so new to all this swimming stuff that I don't even know what to be asking. I am trying to prepare for the Senior Games in the Spring. I asked our Parks and Rec for pools to provide an instructor/group of folks interested in the Senior Games at the pool I go to and not have to travel 8 more miles to the large pool uptown. I convinced them to give it a try and they finally agreed. We now have an instructor (who is fabulous) teaching "stroke of the day" on Mon-Wed for an hour. So far there have been 4 of us participating (but not all 4 come on the same day). I don't want to lose this as it's really making a difference in my swimming. I'm learning sooooo much from this instructor who also swims competitively.
She thinks I should be okay for the games and that it will give me an idea of what I can/cannot do --never have competed. I have always been able to swim but just was not taught the correct way to do any of the strokes so I've lots of bad technique to eliminate. Bad habits die hard.

So all this to say It don't know how to participate here and I don't know how to train. I found a couple of Youtube videos showing how to do freestyle so think I'll explore some more in that area. Any suggestions, hints, etc. would be appreciated. I haven't really heard from anyone here so maybe I'm looking in the wrong place? I just want some support and a place to learn.

I do 3 mornings a week of water aerobics, 2 mornings a week of deep water cardio and now 2 afternoons of swim instruction.d

Thanks everyone! Have a good Sunday.

Yeah, I agree that we should look at it in January to decide. Ten years is a long time! Being at the same weight still means you're not at a higher weight and you should take that as a win!

I'll finally be getting back to swimming every day very soon! Our new house is supposed to close at the end of this coming week, but it will probably really be the next week. We're also getting the current house's kitchen delivered mid-week so we'll have a lot going on.

The new job took a turn towards greatness this past week as the owner pretty much told HR and the southern people to get out of the way! He's figured out that I know what I'm doing and have a clear plan for getting everything running at top level so he's firmly behind me. It's pretty awesome because he's such a huge figure in this industry.

Speaking of the time on Spark, it's amazing how much I have to appreciate it. It's brought our friendship, it brought me my daughter-in-law and she brought me Lauren who worked for me at Rancho. She is going to come interview for my accounting manager position this week! Lauren is super smart like Maureen, which is why they were friends. I am going to train whoever I bring on to be able to take my place, so it's a huge opportunity and I kinda hate giving it to just anybody. If I had a choice I would choose to give it to Lauren...and she agreed!

Carol, I just took a look back to the beginning of the team discussion forum, and found that my first post for the Good Morning Swimmers threads started in January 2008. That's almost 10 years ago!! I know I'm more fit, but I'm probably exactly the same weight!

We aren't getting a lot of chat here anymore......not sure what to do, but I do like round numbers, so I'm gonna keep posting until at least January.....then maybe we'll discuss what kind of involvement, if any, we will keep up with the team.....

I'm gonna have a great weekend!!! It's the last football game of the season tomorrow afternoon, and I'm looking forward to it. I hope you have a nice weekend Carol!! And of course anyone else who happens to see this. :)

Dance is going really well! It's my third year, but last year I had to miss about two months, so I feel like I never quite got the choreography last year and kinda faked it all through the spring and in the recital. This year I'm a lot more dedicated!!

It really is a lot of fun. I'm not sure what I'm going to do once Sydney is done with dance. I have mixed feelings about this studio......but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it!

It can be pretty crazy. Plus you always have literally millions of dollars in trucks, tractors and trailers wandering around the state. I do love it. But, I am looking forward to retirement now that we know we can do it! It will just be a little further out than planned.

How is your dance class going? I've been thinking about seeing if there's a Kung Fu gym around here. I used to love that and it's a lot like dance. I'm super excited about having a pool in my backyard!

Sounds actually really hard to account for! Guess that's the challenge and why you are well paid, since you are the expert!

Haha...well, I'd totally agree about the hours and all - IF I wasn't in ag. Agriculture is all about squirting out from the sides, all of the time. You have people collecting your data that don't read or write in any language. You bring in a load and weigh it, that should be straightforward...but they ran out of bins so they used some of someone else's...but the tare weight is different because the bins are slightly different sizes. Now it gets cooled and dumps into a blending machine that washes, sorts and mixes the lovely bagged stuff that you find at the store...only it lost weight in the cooler and the laser and photo culler rejected more...so now you have a different weight. When the customer gets it on the other end and they weigh it, the weight is different yet again...some deals are paid on received weight, others on shipped weight AND you are in a joint venture for 20% of this one and 30% of that one...

You are always chasing the deals in ag...but you are never bored.

Hands off is interesting. Sounds like he's demanding when he isn't.

I have one owner who is too busy making deals to be hands on and the other is also making deals but is more involved day-to-day. We shall see how this works out. Haha...it's so mixed up! Whoever set up the chart of accounts didn't understand the basics - sigh

I personally have always thought that if systems are set up correctly and the right people are in place that working beyond 8 hours a day shouldn't be necessary. Maybe during year end, or audit time you grind out the hours, but then you should be able to make that up a bit with a little more flexibility other times of the year. I'm not sure this place feels the same way as I do.....

The guy who runs this company is a bit strange.....seemingly very nice, but very hands off. Until of course he wants to know what's going on....right? People are the hardest part of work...... :)

I don't work nights, but I do come to work early and occasionally work weekends. I'm trying to get everything set up and running smoothly, then I can work less hours. The system is currently set up all wrong, but I will get it done!

Happy birthday!!! emoticon
