emoticon Commute was slightly less than two hours today including the stops for gas and for breakfast.......time to start getting up earlier and getting ahead of the traffic!!

I really try not to complain....I chose to live in the middle of nowhere because I love being in the country and now I'm finally beginning to organize an income where I may not have to commute to a job working for someone else anymore. That's the goal!!

babies! Congratulations Laurie!

And good move on relocating to the main part of the house, I'm sure that will help stress a good bit too.

I'm entirely spoiled by my commutes, I've managed to work within 15-20 minutes from home most of the time. Once the school buses come back in force on Tuesday though it'll be a little longer.

Hi all, happy Labor Day weekend.

Heather, you'll do great with your side business. I'm glad it's taking off so quickly. No info on press releases, sorry. Saw your post about Sydney getting the Broadway Bound award! Fantastic! She's worked so hard (and so have you!) I know you are very proud of her.

Who has an hour and 20 commute? On a daily basis? Not me... never, never, never, not in 10 million years. I might do it once or twice a month if I could work from home the rest of the time, and if the drive was not at rush hour.

Carol, you have such great plans for "retirement." I put that in quotes because I don't see you ever truly "retiring." You will always find an avocation of some kind to keep you busy. You recall my brother and his wife live in Santa Cruz? They do say there's a lot of traffic, but they rarely drive anywhere in town. They walk or ride their bikes. And they are spending a lot of time in San Fran these days because they have a new grandbaby!

Is it weird of me to gloat over finally beating out my brother at something? I had a grandbaby before he did!

Health insurance... don't get me started. I qualified for a nice subsidy through the marketplace, then made too much money and the IRS wants it all back. Between that and federal taxes, I owe them $8K. I tried to set aside some of each attorney fee I received, but I just couldn't keep up. I'm on a payment plan, but the minute business picks up enough to pay it off, you can bet I'll be getting rid of that bill! Right now I'm on a catastrophic plan because my health is good, but, yes, absolutely we need to fix this in our country.

I am finally starting to feel more comfortable working from home. I moved out of my attic into an extra bedroom in the main part of the house. We refinished the attic years ago, and it's very nice, but it doesn't get a lot of natural light and feels a bit claustrophobic. And I had to keep running up and down the stairs because that's where my filing cabinet is, which was never getting up into that attic. I feel much better in that space, and I'm feeling productive. Now I just need to paint the room! It hasn't been painted since 2002 when I moved in, and it looks awful!

Business is starting to pick up a bit. I just signed several new clients who, over time, will generate some decent income. And I have been taking new court appointed work also, which I had not done for a few months. I don't know what it is about those juvenile cases. There's so much need and I love working with the kids, even though the pay is less than a third of the hourly rate I get from my private pay clients. Still, money is money.

Still trying to get the house cleaned up. My next goal is to rip up the carpet before we have to winterize the house and turn the heat on. It smells awful and I can't imagine another season in the closed up house. I'll deal with refinishing later.

Final news: I have another grandbaby coming!!! Due around the end of March. My poor daughter is just as sick with this one as she was with the first, but at least now she knows what to expect. I'll be going there for a few days for the first baby's first birthday, and then will plan to spend a couple weeks when the new one comes along. emoticon emoticon I'm excited!

Hi guys, I had a crazy week covering for my boss while she's been on vacation. Double duty sucks. But I made it and caught up by the end of the week! I didn't get any exercise all week though *womp womp* Heading to the beach tomorrow though and the surf forcast looks good for some open water swimming.

Heather, I feel like I wrote a press release years ago for my local SCA group but I can't remember in particular. I wish I had more guidance to give. What's the press release for? Are you trying to put out basic where/what/when information? I imagine that's mostly all there is to it... and then it's a question of who to send it to so it gets posted!

Hi. Do any of my friends here have experience writing press releases? I realized we should do one for our local paper saying a local artist (my hubby) will be at the big local craft fair coming up in September. I'm trying to learn this whole business promotion thing without paying someone since we don't have the funds to do that yet!

Any hints on how to write it? I know you can get your release printed word for word as you submit it because the dance school does it all the time and they clearly write it themselves. Any guidance on where to find great templates for press releases?

EDIT: Well, of course I googled it and found lots of info. So, my now more specific question is does anyone have a place they like better than others for press release templates? LOL

Thanks!!

I don't want to commute more than a half an hour and I've decided to rule Santa Cruz out because the traffic gets pretty horrible. I have 7 towns within that range in different directions with lots of agricultural companies, but also to the north there is a fair amount of manufacturing and some tech.

I'm excited for the weekend. We're going to do some hiking and kayaking with the kids. My son and Maureen are hosting a foreign exchange student who will also come up. Yay! I'm excited for the weekend!

Ah, health care.....an issue I've faced twice in the last year with the two lay offs.....my new health insurance through the employer finally starts on Friday and I'm very happy.

Yeah, the commute is tough, but since there are literally no professional jobs within at least 45 minutes of my home (well, there are teaching jobs, but you know, I'm not a teacher!, and the two companies that have well paid management jobs never have any turnover for obvious reasons), I look at the commute as starting about 45 minutes from my house, which is where the population picks up and therefore the jobs start appearing.

I did a similar commute for many years at my old job. I know as soon as I become more established I will be able to turn some of my days into work from home days, so I have that to keep me going. Plus now, I'm listening to audio books again in the car so I look at it as time spent "reading" that I wouldn't normally be able to find time to do in my busy life.

I've been listening to Jack Canfield's "The Success Principles" and am so inspired!! Some of these things I do already and some I am going to incorporate into my life to be even more successful overall. Anyone have any success or motivation programs they use to reach their goals? Share with us if you do!!

Heather - Hope the cold goes away soon! Your little business will take off if you just keep your eye on it. I was amazed at how easy it was to be self-employed...but I worked too much. My sister and I might do a business together. Between us we could do a wide range of services which might be fun. I have business, management, and troubleshooting and she has math, teaching and computer software.

An hour and twenty-minute commute? Wow, that's pretty brutal...and if you're saying without traffic I can guess what that means. That would get me all the way to Silicon Valley...but traffic is ugly. I could get another $20-35k if I did that, so I totally understand.

I just need one more year. Hubby will be 67 next year and we are trying to pay off one of our rentals. Between those two we will make more than enough to live on! We have no house payment and we absolutely know what our costs are. The only hanging thing is health care! He has Medicare, but I won't be eligible for that for another 9 years! I can get insurance from his pension but it's a thousand a month. I wish we'd solve that issue here in the US.

Good Morning all!! I hope everyone had a great weekend!! I am coming to the end of this cold, and I'm feeling much better. It started last Tuesday and I'm pleased that it's nearly over. It seems to me over the years that colds tend to hang on for 7 to 10 days or even a bit longer for me, and this one is much shorter in duration, so that's a good thing! Maybe my immune system is getting stronger as I get healthier! I hope that's it.

I have a busy work week ahead of me at my job and also with my side businesses. Things seem to be falling into place well and I'm pretty excited about that.

Have a FUN and ACTIVE day and week!!
