Breaststroke.... I always think of my son and his competitions because we went to the funniest meet ever when he was a senior in high school. He was super popular (though he had no idea) and his team was having a meet where they were murdering the other team and the last event was 100 medley. They did it differently than usual, back, free, butterfly ending with breaststroke...and they substituted my son in. He's six foot with a huge arm span and the first 100 with back stroke he was a quarter length ahead, free he was more than a full length, butterfly, with his wing-span is an awesome thing of beauty...then breaststroke... by the turn the other teams were catching up, close on his heels, by the last half they were passing him one-by-one and then everyone but him was done and everyone was laughing and calling to him. Some group started a chant of "Jay-Jay-Jay". He pulls in, dead last and the whole place erupted in applause. He climbed out and took a bow. Best total defeat, ever.

I guess genetically my family is just not built for the breaststroke! He did take lessons from their best breaststroker and got ...better.

My last year competing was when I was 12! I was on a community swim team and I was one of the better swimmers in my age group. Our team was good and by my last year we were competing against the toughest teams in our state, including the Navy Jr. swim team. Not Navy people, maybe their kids? I don't remember more than they were the "Navy" swim team and they were in Annapolis and they were amazing. The coach moved me up to swim with the teenagers in practice to push me more. I was intimidated but I did it and I did well as a competitor.

At the end of the season I asked my parents if I could do the winter swim team at the Y because the only way to really keep up and win at that level was to swim year 'round. My parents weren't willing to get up early and take me to practice, so that was the end of that. I stopped swimming in the summer because I couldn't deal with losing every race. They weren't very good at helping me with my competitive spirit.

This story likely explains why I am so supportive of my daughter. Honestly, and brutally, I really think if my parents had been a more engaged with me I would have been a lot more successful a lot sooner. And I base that on seeing Sydney, who is so much like me, thrive and succeed beyond anything I ever imagined at her age. My temperament is totally unlike my parents'. Well, no going back now........

Jen, we've seen people on this team who had never swum before become swimming enthusiasts and swim instructors! You should be super proud of that strong breaststroke. I feel like I'm standing still when I try it!!

Carol, I'm sure my answers are no, no, and no hahahaha I have a hard time trusting that trough and so I lift my head quite a bit.

According to my little fitness tracker things I manage just over 2 yards per stroke, so I cover distance pretty ok with my breaststroke. When I practice my flutter kicks with a board I feel like I'm standing still though.

Granted, I've never swam competitively. I did have formal lessons as a kid though and so in theory I know how to do the competitive strokes. But theory and practice are not the same

So when I try breaststroke I feel like I am going absolutely nowhere!! Back in my competitive youth days it was always my weakest stroke and I never competed in it, and only had to use it in the IM. I'm continually impressed by people who can efficiently and effectively use this stroke to move with any speed through the pool. emoticon

I'm very excited it's Friday! I have enjoyed my empty nest week, but I'm also ready to get my baby bird back in the nest tomorrow! I imagine I'll be happy for about 5 minutes then she will start her teenage whining....... :)

I'm continuing my focus on good food and exercise. I know I can get going again on the weight loss, I just need to focus.

And I signed up my second client yesterday!! My website is almost ready and will go live on Monday. Woo hoo!!!

Have a great weekend everyone!!!

Jen - Consider watching some videos that have specific practices on how to do one part of the stroke. When I taught freestyle my three biggest things that I suggested people practice is: 1) When you take a breath, can your lower eye still see underwater? 2) Are your knees straight? 3) Is your core tight? My problem right now is that my body has muscle memory from eight years of a mile + a day and knows exactly where the trough is for breathing...but now I'm slower because I'm not doing it every day so I'm breathing water haha

I'm having a crazy day at work getting ready for a board meeting, but if I can locate a new job I won't have to do another one!

Hehehe I know it's kind of odd. I have a good rhythm down with my breaststroke - arms/breathe, kick, glide. The trouble I had with the freestyle laps was feeling very winded very quickly - so I'm not timing my breaths quite right.

Late post as I wind down from a night of painting... Gotta get some good rest though.

Haha Jen, I know you swim breaststroke and it cracks me up that you do that predominantly and find free difficult - I am exactly opposite! The only time I do a modified breaststroke is when I'm snorkeling in shallow coral I do breaststroke arms, but flutter legs. Plus, I usually have shorty fins on so froggy kicks wouldn't work so well.

We had our 35th wedding anniversary yesterday! Next year marks our 40th of living together...when did we get so old? I've been having joint pains so I am on my protein shake only protocol. I will try to do this until Sunday when we will go to a (semi) fancy dinner.

I am meeting with a headhunter on Friday to discuss possible jobs. I need around 14 more months worth of work, but I don't want to stay where I am...so off to shop for jobs!

Hi folks :)

I got a good swim in before an epic thunderstorm rolled in. I even attempted a couple (literally two) laps of freestyle. I think some of you know, I swim pretty much exclusively breaststroke. Wow that was hard, not something I've done much at all - good challenge!

I'm getting ready to leave for Pennsic next week! This year may be a little different, my Dad usually comes with me and lately he's been having problems with a bulging disc impinging nerves. He's looking at surgery and so camping for a week might be out of the question.

Hi Heather! Hi everyone! You daughter will do great! You remember when we were young and ready to be independent even if our parents weren't. I am glad she has this opportunity. Good luck with your workouts. emoticon

I am still struggling some with finding my rhythm as far as exercise daily. I hope to go back to swimming this week since I have less physical pain that way. Upward and onward! emoticon

Good Morning!! I hope everyone had a great weekend!!

I dropped my 15 year old "baby" off at Dartmouth for a week long medical careers camp yesterday. I inexplicably was able to leave her without crying but this morning I'm all teary eyed and missing her so much. I've talked to her once for about a minute and gotten a few texts and she is already having a great time. So that makes it a little bit easier!!

We had a nice weekend in VT but I didn't get much chance to actually work out. This week I have nothing in the evenings to get in the way of the workout, so there's no reason I can't hit it hard and get myself focused!

Have a FUN and ACTIVE week!!!
