Carol, that sounds like a good method. I saw a job post for a local non profit that I seriously considered for a minute but decided to stay put. I'll probably keep looking periodically. I want to focus on my art viability though.

Old.... ugh.... I just turned 57. Jobs? Double ugh....

One of my options is to look for a job with a firm with a regular paycheck, since I'm really struggling to get new clients and therefore some actual income. I do watch the classifieds, and there are a few jobs I've considered applying for, but honestly, for me to give up the freedom I have now, any new job would have to be the perfect dream job and I don't think that exists. In the immortal words of my late father..... "Got less income? Then cut costs!"

There may be a magistrate's position coming open soon in the only court where I ever make court appearances. Someone suggested I apply, but I don't want to. I don't want that responsibility, but the bigger issue is that the Judge there will be retiring when her term ends in three years. She is extremely popular and well-liked and respected, and the election will be chaos, not to mention the transition after she leaves office. Most new judges clean house and install all their own staff, so I could see myself being out of a job and having to start over again from scratch at age 60. No thank you! I think I'll stick with what I've got, even if I'm struggling for billings right now.

Jen - One of the things I do if work has me feeling like I'm tired of it is I look at available jobs out there. That always makes me feel better when I think about other jobs I could go after...but decide not to. IDK...you might try it.

I am also excited for the weekend! We get to dog sit the kid's doggy and I love him! We're going to spend the next two nights at the SM house getting it ready to rent and get the offer up on craigslist! Then we're going up to the Royal Oaks house and out to a 5 course gourmet meal on Sunday. It should be a lot of fun!

My husband quit his job, but they've asked him to stay on remotely which is super convenient for doing the transition. They will continue to pay his health benefits and even if he only continues until August, he'll switch to Medicare then. How did we get so old?

I'm also liking the weekly thread since it's easier to catch up - I can't always log on every day, but checking in and having non involved people to talk to about whatever is going on is a good support for me so thanks guys!

Amanda, I'm sorry it's been a rough go lately, but glad to hear your shifting the focus to self care

I'm glad it's Friday, I'm ready to be away from my desk. Still struggling with burn out and how to recover from it without becoming resentful. I was taken out to lunch this week and my vacation request for my August pennsic trip was finally approved so that helps a lot.

Heather, I did that years ago when I was doing business troubleshooting. If I liked the client, I kept on as their accountant so that I had a small core of business just in case the troubleshooting side was slow. ...the troubleshooting side was never slow and I ended up working about 70 hours a week. But, I made good money. I had to stop when my son got to be a year old because he was just too busy.

Hi swimmers!!! I have an interview this afternoon for a position that looks very promising.

I've also started researching the best ways to market myself and set myself up with a small CPA practice. My plan is to provide small business bookkeeping and accounting services. I'm sure there's competition out here, but I'm also sure there are plenty of businesses who are unhappy with their current provider and who I could make happy clients!

Hubby is off to the next craft fair. Everyone pray or cross your fingers, or whatever you can do to send us good sales!!

Have a great day everyone!!

Woo hoo for getting to the pool Jen!

Amanda, I really feel for you. I am an orphan now. My mother died on Mother's day about twenty years ago and I still miss her. My best friend just helped put her ailing father in a VA hospice care facility and I'm working to be her support system. Her mother isn't any help...actually she causes a lot more work, so it's tough going for her.

I hope a great job shows up soon for you, Heather...and you're reminding me that I should get on the Internet and look to see what I can see.

On the other hand, maybe I'll just sit with this job another year and work less hours. My husband and I talked this morning about taking a year off and moving to Bali or Peru or ... somewhere. We will be in a funny position pretty soon in that if we left and rented out the house, it would cover the cost of living in another country...so why not? Live on a beach? I could do that!

Hi Amanda! I'm really sorry to hear about your last few months, and especially of the passing of your mother-in-law. Being a caretaker really can take a toll on us, but we have to find a little time to take care of ourselves in order to care fully for others. It's good to see that you are working toward that in your life.

I'm glad you like the weekly thread! I'm still trying to come here daily as the support I've received from my friends here has really been instrumental in keeping my spirits up through the harder times. And I love giving support where I can as well. As I tell anyone, just jump in whenever. We really just live ordinary day to day lives and share some of that here, so if someone mentions something and you have no idea what they are referencing, just ask!

I'm still in the running for the contract to hire position for which I interviewed last week. In fact I'm the one they want! The company is in a lot of flux and they are taking their time. Which is fine because I have so much else to do, I'm keeping very busy.

The hubby made some sales at the last show, and he has another one coming up this weekend. We hope it's very successful! I am also signing up for all of our local "Town Days" with a booth to sell our hand made candles. I hope that goes really well too!! Plus, I'm still applying for jobs, contacting recruiters for temp or temp to perm jobs, and setting up to start gaining my own clients. I think I may finally have a better idea of what I want to do with my life. Burying myself in someone else's business is not as rewarding as it once was. But income is income too, and I need to bring in more than I can make on unemployment benefits! They really are a joke if you have any kind of professional position. But something is better than nothing, so I'll take it!

Have a great day everyone!!! I'm off to work and workout!!

I LOVE that you switched to a weekly thread instead of daily. It will make it a little easier to keep up with the group news.
I dropped off the SparkPeople radar for several months; my mother-in-law (84yo) developed severe pain in her legs in September (arthritis/bad knees) and lost the ability to walk. That plus her Alzheimer's & diabetes made it necessary for her to enter a skilled nursing facility in October . My personal fitness went way down the priority list in the midst of moving her stuff out of her apartment, learning how to take her to/from appts in a wheelchair, and adjusting to the 25-minute commute to the SNF for visits. (She used to live less than 2 miles away.) She died suddenly of a heart attack on March 15. The loss has been hard, but I am trying to find a new normal. Ignoring my own health these past 5 months has taken a toll. I am struggling with shoulder pain; it's awful! I want to get back to the gym or pool, but it has not happened since December. I packed a swim bag and put it in my car today; maybe Wednesday I can GET to the pool and actually use it!
I am trying to be active on SP again, and I even started tracking my food. Baby steps, but I must move forward one again!

Hi folks :)

I'm getting ready to head to the pool, working on my mental state lately... just been a bit down. Not swimming outside yet, I think I've got about a month until the Y switches from the bubble pool to the heated outdoor pool.

Good Morning all! I hope everyone had a great weekend! I had some fun with my kid, I had a great riding lesson, and I did some work on my job search and professional life.

I'm going to start looking for clients for accounting and bookkeeping work. I am a CPA, but not currently licensed to do full CPA work in NJ. However, I can still provide all accounting services, including tax work, in NJ. I just can't do audits. Well, I'm not going to market myself as an auditor! I have one potential client with whom I will meet tomorrow.

I'm also working on setting up our guest room as an airbnb room. We are a quarter mile from the Appalachian Trail, we are close to the ski slopes and mountain biking trails in the next town over, and we have a generally nice home. I honestly have always wanted to run a B&B but never have been able to make the leap to innkeeper. This is one way to start that transition. If I can get the space rented regularly, I can make a few bucks for not too much effort.

I hope everyone else had a fun weekend. Anyone swimming outside yet?

Have a FUN and ACTIVE week!!!
