You might be surprised once you get in the pool, Gill. My hardest part after a long layoff (winter) is regulating my breathing. Think about your breaths v strokes and don't try to speed kill the session. Work on rhythm.

I'm so jealous of your running. It's been years for me (arthritis recently surgically fixed) but I'm working back to it.

I've planned my first visit to the pool - tomorrow 11am.

Then I've checked out the 1 mile training plan - and the first session is 28 lengths (of 25m) and I'm really NOT sure I can do that! I might drop the first 4 x 100m set, and just do 4 x 50m, and 3 x 25m - that will be 12 lengths which sounds enough for Day 1 to me!

I'm usually a regular runner (5k max) but have had an injured toe for the past four weeks - so really missing that exercise. I've been doing yoga on day, and strength-training on the other day. The strength-training is a programme for 'older people' but I'm feeling the benefit already.

The results are better than I hoped but the reasons are what I expected. Only up a couple and within my normal range, BMI from 24.3 to 24.7, normal. BF % (under the more lenient YMCA algorithm than any of the military branch measurements) 13.4 to 13.7. Measurements showed +1" or so waist and hips. Neck, arms and legs the same so it's a softer core at nearly the same weight as expected. I know what I have to do but I haven't been able to do more than simple crunches when I could bang off 50 sit-ups before and struggle to 25 female pushups when 50 male was norm. My pull-ups and chin-ups are the same as before so the upper strength is still there.

At least it's a baseline to go against for the next few months.

I am amazed that I am not sore today! I have tight muscles, but not at all what I'd expect after yesterday. We did trade massages, take a sauna and jacuzzi after the hike, so that all probably helped.

I bet you'll find your numbers are better than you expected Jon. It will be a good challenge to be a part of.

Oops, it's sideways...well, you get the idea.

Hi gang! I'll start.

Wind is whipping pretty hard out there so no swim and I'd rather not be blown all over the road on the bike with holiday traffic. I'll be the usual stationary bike and treadmill today. I'll also run up some new BMI and body fat % numbers to get started on the 4th quarter fitness + challenge discussed last week. Not looking forward to seeing hard numbers after the enforced layoff.

Everyone enjoy the holiday!
