Lately something that has been motivating me on SparkPeople is my daily calorie differential when I manage to track an entire day's worth of food and my exercise too! My goal is to have the differential be "-1,000" or more on most days! When I reach that goal it makes me feel great, and makes me look forward to my weigh-ins and the changes my body is going to go through.

I whole heartedly agree with the importance of non-scale victories. This is the first time ever I have focused and celebrated anything other than the scale going down! Makes a huge difference. Also, I purchased an inexpensive dry erase board calendar that I hung over my towel bar on my side of our dressing area. Each month I deck it out colorfully with my goals for the month and then track my successes throughout the month, trouble spots, etc. and I write a quote at the top to inspire me all month long. I do not put anything on it other than things that pertain to my personal health goals. It is so fun to see it every time I go in there.

My lowest weight since having babies was 174. Healthy is 158 for me. That's where I'm headed. My biggest motivation is seeing before and after pics of those who have achieved some of their goals. I'm working on some "after" pics of my own. LOL! I also LOVE what I call NSV. Non scale victories. If you aren't already, I really encourage everyone to measure! I measure around the 1st of every month and around the 15th of every month. I started this in January (weight 220) and have really been excited to see those numbers go down!! I also do Zumba usually 3 days a week and I love being able to do an exercise to it's fullest extent without modification that I couldn't do when I started such as a full jumping jack or even a jack squat or squat jake (whatever those things are called!)! LOVE those NSVs!!! LOL!!

I find that Feeling better physically & emotionally has been motivating for me. While the numbers on the scale do not seem to be budging for me at the moment I find I do feel lighter and my endurance has also improved.

Right now, my short term goal of being under 200 lbs. motivates me. After that, I'll have to decide what the next short term goal will be -- probably getting to 185, which is my lowest weight as an adult.

Motivation comes from realizing halfway through the cardio DVD that I am keeping up and not huffing and puffing laying on the floor - gasping for air!
I can do this now! I can see the progress and feel it too!

Onwards and UPwards!

So many motivators...lately I love listening to upbeat music while walking...I actually look forward to exercise

Being off 4 medications

Having less pain

The thought of not having to wear "plus size" clothing styles

Feeling my bones again.

And SparkPeople!

I've hung onto the pants I was wearing at my highest weight - they'd been convenient when doing laundry so I could wash all my other clothes. When I'd replaced them, they were maybe an inch or two on either side too big. I put them on last night and found them at that point where I had to work to keep them up. There's definitely a LOT more room in there.

If they're still lying around somewhere, pulling out something that was tight or fit at the beginning of the journey and trying it on every few months can make the adjustment of the body a good bit more obvious and really motivate toward making even more room in them for the next time.

Sometimes motivations can also be "negatives". The one thing I really really find disgusting, that I can see the beginnings of on my body and that I see on people far more obese, is the way the abdominal area just kind of fills and sags, until the gut hangs between the legs. It's vain, but it was one of the things that made me stop at 250 well before I got into the mindset to undo what I was doing to myself. (That, and seeing the inescapable double chin in photos. I don't do the pictures from above to hide that.

Other times motivations can be huge positives. I love to hike. I want to be able to gear up for and go on an overnight hike. More importantly, though, I want to do it without worrying that I'll end up breathless after any reasonable incline and have to catch my breath before continuing.

When I'm doing my strength training, and realizing that while it's tiring, I can get to 15 reps for both sets. I remember starting out and struggling to get to 12. In addition, I can actually focus a lot more on form now; I've gone back and reviewed the examples to make sure I'm doing them correctly.

That motivates me to keep it up because I ~KNOW~ I'm getting stronger and more capable with those muscle groups.

One thing that really motivates me, I'm coming to realize, is clothing. Not because I love it, not because I love shopping for it. No, it's because of how much I hate the styles, colors, and fabrics of "fat people" clothes. It's because of how much I hate being limited to a couple of plus-size stores and their idea of what I want to wear rather than finding two out of hundreds of stores that carry something I think looks nice.

That, and not wearing out every pair of pants in less than a year because of the walking and the rubbing of the inner thighs. In the last four years I've gone through three sweat pants, two jeans, and two pairs of dress slacks. Not by growing out of them, but from holes in the inner thigh area.

La Pasionata, I love when you said, "... each week, each month I can see the change". That is SO true for all of us. No matter the setbacks we need to remember to NEVER quit and we will see those changes.

On SparkPeople, I like seeing the growth that I am making, seeing the ticker changing and the amount of information I am gaining with my weight loss. Physically, seeing that my body structure is changing really motivates me. There are time I would step on the scale and it says somethin I do not like, but I remind myself of how far I have come now. I have folds of skin with serious fat under them, but each week, each month I can see the change. My clothes are also becoming loose. It is such great motivation. Keeping records of your weight loss is really of great help because you can see how far you have come and on those lazy days when you just feel too fat to exercise, you can look at that and get right back up. I have also found it super motivating to watch videos or read blogs of those that have made it. And not to forget the spark teams, friends and support, its wonderful! There is a lot out there to motivate one on this important life changing journey.
