I'm going to try and start cooking more healthy meals for me and the hubby. Meals that I can cook quickly and do again and again so that I build up my reportoire of healthy meals that I know from hear and don't resort to fast food or quick and easy meals with lots of calories.

I started a post on one of my other Spark Teams with daily fitness challenges. The other members are really gung-ho about it, which makes me more committed to getting it done as well.

Hi, I too had greater challenges keeping on track while travelling and I was not doing as much as you see to have ahead of you. But I did take my exercise DVDs with me and used my laptop to play them for my workout (which I either did early in the morning or late at night).

I saw some great suggestions about exercise while travelling on the Love to Travel Spark Team. You might want to check them out.

And finally, the greatest challenge I find has been to learn that I have to take care of my body FIRST before the demands of work or home or family. Otherwise, I won't be able to take care of any of it.

I hope you can squeeze in even 10 minutes a day to take care of you.

Best wishes

I am looking for tips to stay on my diet and get enough exercise in while traveling on business -

In terms of diet, I have a hard time finding places where I don't cave in and order high-calorie meals once I see the menu (other than at Subway which is hard to do for dinner for more than a day).

In terms of exercise, I have a hard time finding time for it - I'm not allowed to take my usual lunch-time walk, jet lag makes it IMPOSSIBLE to get up early before the meetings, and the evenings are lost doing the office work I missed during the day over the Internet or having additional working meetings. Mondays and Fridays are spent sitting for long hours, going cross-country, hoping to catch all my connecting flights.

Really - this is a problem for me. So many times I'll get a good diet and eating plan going at home, just to revert to bad habits during business travel....and in the next few months, I have a lot of trips coming up again.

Thanks for whatever advice you can take the time to send me!

If you think you've completely blown it, don't decide to throw the baby out with the bath water.

There's so many analogies, but here's two good ones:

== Having a bad day is like getting a flat tire. You fix it and get back on the road; you don't have a tantrum & go around popping holes in the other 3 tires! == ~Indygirl
(See her SparkPage for more such wisdom.)

== I broke a crystal wine glass doing the dishes on Christmas Eve. You know what I did? I put the pieces in the garbage and I picked up the next glass and I carefully washed it. Then I picked up the next one, and the one after that, and on and on until I had 19 clean glasses on my counter and one broken glass in the trash.

What I did not do was take those 19 glasses and smash them to the floor.

I put away my screw up and I went on. == Timothynohe

Accept that it's been blown and can't be fixed, BUT then move on. Decide the next thing will be done right. And the next thing. And the next. Learn from the mistake that led to it being blown. Look for ways to be more careful and avoid a similar pitfall. Believe you can do better next time. DO better next time.

This is a lifestyle change. What does that mean? It means we want to find the habits and foods and activities we can LIVE with. I love walking. Even long after I meet my goal, I hope to be walking - perhaps even increasing distances. Which means my maintenance calorie range will actually be a bit higher than I'm currently eating, making the transition easier.

Most fad diets depend on extremes, things people know they won't keep doing when they're "done". And therein lies the yo-yo. That dieter goes back to their usual fare, their usual activity, without paying attention to the fact that living that way for years is how they gained the weight they've just lost.

When making changes in your life such as drinking more water, being more active, think of them not as something you're doing until you reach that ideal weight. Look for the things you WANT to keep doing for as long as you can.

Accept that there will be days you "screw up". Whether you overeat or don't get a workout done, it does happen. It's not a major disaster, though. Unless you ate 3500 EXTRA calories that day, one day alone will NOT destroy all your efforts.

Treat those days like sick days from work. You don't want to take them, you want to do anything to avoid taking them, but if they do have to be taken, you get back to work the next day or as soon as possible. You don't quit your job because you missed a day. So why quit working for a healthy life because of a "sick day"?

(Edited because even IF we ate 3500 EXTRA calories, that's a mere tiny little pound regained. Can you even imagine eating 7000 EXTRA calories in one day to undo two pounds lost? If we eat toward the low end of our calorie range every day for the rest of the week, we can average it out and possibly keep it a flat week.)

I just climbed back on the wagon myself. I gained five pounds in the last two months. BUT, the tip I have is to eat a high protein breakfast. That one thing has kept it from being a ten pound gain. I swear by it.

Don't let being sick stop you in your tracks. You may not be able to eat right or workout. You can control your portions. Stop eating at least 2 hrs before bed. Don't kick yourself for not losing the weight you want.

I've been sick for 3 weeks. I've only lost 5 pounds this month and I haven't been able to workout. I'm not beating myself up. I'm taking control of what I can and being happy that I had a weightloss of any kind.

Make the healthiest snacks quickest and easiest to grab. If you really have to work to get at a box of crackers stuck way in the back of a cupboard behind a bunch of canned food and the option is a baggie of a single portion at the front, the baggie is easiest. A little cheese and fruit pre-cut in the fridge with the baggie, all in a little container is even better - a premade balanced snack. (Because it works the other way too. If the crackers are right there, the full box on the counter, and you'd have to cut cheese, wash fruit, get a plate ... we're more likely to walk away with the box.)

Drink your water. I notice a BIG difference in the way my skin looks and the way I feel when I get that water down.

Got a great tip? Share it here. Let's help eachother to fabulous!

My tip for getting in all my water - Before I go to bed, I fill up a pitcher with the water I need to drink. The next day, I don't have to worry about measuring how much water I need to drink or counting how many glasses I've already filled up.
