Hi Cindy and the GBS gang,
Thank you all so much for you quick response and all of your help. I finally got to talk to the nurse and she told me to take what I needed to in order to get rid of this cold. She also told me, nothing with ibupofin (sp), asprin or sugar. So here is what I did: Nettie pot, afrin nose spray, halls drop, salt gargle and benadryl. I feel so much better. My nose is clear but I still have some throat issues. So, they told me to show up Tuesday unless I got worse, they will evaluate then. I think I an good and will be on schedule. I will be starting a topic on my way to the hospital Tuesday morning and will let you all know if it's a go.
Thanks again--you guys are sooooo wonderful!

Yes, I agree definately do saline rinses. I use McNeils Saline solution which is available at the drug store 1 packet to 8 oz warm water or make your own 1% non-iodized salt to 8 oz plain water. I went to medical supply place to buy my catheter syringe ( I draw up 4 oz of saline rinse and squirt it up my nostrel and then spit it out. Then do the same for the other nostrel. I do this 3 or 4 times a day. My ear, nose, and throat doctor preferred the catheter syringe to the neti pot. It is easier to use. The salt makes for an univiting atmosphere and repells bacteria. The warm salt water also hydrates the nasal passage and gets out lots of infection.

It is an old home remedy that really does help. I used it last week for my cold and sinus problem.

Saline rinse is surgery safe.

Nyquil and Alka Seltzer Plus will control your symptoms but won't make your cold leave quicker. Emergen C and Zicam do seem to help you actually get over a cold quicker. The quicker you start, the sooner you get better.

Try calling your pharmacy and talking to the pharmacist. Explain about the surgery, he might recommend something to kick it. But, I'm sure if you still don't feel good by Monday, they will probably cancel your surgery.

You really do not want to attempt major surgery if you are not 100%. The cold will probably cause the surgery to be postponed but maybe for only a couple of days.

I caught a cold during recovery time about 2 1/2 weeks out and it was miserable to be sick with a cold and only able to drink protein drinks. I did not even have any meds I could take, I could not go to my doctor because I was recovering at mom and dads.

My surgery was postponed 3 times (sched chg, insurance, and then EKG). I was on the pre-surgery diet for 4 weeks instead of 2 weeks. I went in for my pre-admit EKG and surgery was postponed a week so I could see a cardiac specialist then my primary care decided 5 days before surgery that I should have one more round of bloodwork before surgery. They found a minor bladder infection. I was put on antibiotics and bloodwork rechecked 3 days later and so I did not have a the surgery postponed a 4th time.

Just try to eat healthy, take lots of vitamins, get plenty of rest, do whatever the surgeon says. It will all work out in the end. If you have surgery a few days later it will really not make a big difference in the long run.

Good luck and Get Well Soon,

cindy

I take airborne 4 times a day when sick. Do ask the surgeon what he wants you to take

Ack! That is so frustrating. Start hitting the Vitamin C, E-mergenc-C is a really good choice. A couple of times a day until you get an answer from your Doc. Oh, I hope that you do not get delayed, but you really must be healthy before any surgery. Do not Stress over it if you can, that will only weaken your immune system more and then you will get a cold for sure.

I'd suggest you continue to call your surgeon's office and take whatever you would normally take for a cold. I swear by Alka Seltzer Plus but whatever works for you should be okay to take. Hope you have a speedy recovery so surgery can go as scheduled.

I believe in taking a positive attitude toward the world. My hope still is to leave the world a little bit better than when I got here.

I would think that your surgery would be postponed as any major surgery would in such case. The only thing you could do would be Nyquil type OTC meds to try and kick it before surgery. That was my fear and I got flu shots, pneumonia shot, etc and stopped running and walking outdoors months before my surgery to help ensure I didn't get sick. I hope it all works out for you!

Hi Guys,
My surgery is scheduled for This coming Tuesday. Today I feel like I have a cold-it started a few days ago and I thought it was allergies but now I'm not sure. Any thoughts on what I can take? Do you think they will postpone my surgery? I have called the DR office but they have not called me back? HELP!
Loretta
