Cheryl, welcome home! Iím sorry to hear about the vomiting. Just do what you can and donít push yourself. I hope youíre getting lots of rest!

Cindy, I think Iím going to check that book out, sounds like it might help me with my ďfood issuesĒ. Whatís a hamburger made Chef Daveís way? Today I tried that coffee cup egg scramble recipe and it was delicious (and easy which is my favorite part)

Ruby I understand your issue with not being adventurous in what you eat. I do the same thing. I think itís partially comfort but mostly laziness on my partÖ You can do it! Just make a goal to maybe try one new recipe a week.

Vicky thatís awesome!!!!! I canít imagine how great that feels.

Today I went to the pool for a little bit and did some light water aerobics and stretching. Itís about 110 degrees with the heat index here in Virginia so I didnít stay too long. When I came home I had a sugar free watermelon snow cone. I was excited to find the juice made with no sugar alcohols. It's so hot I've had no problem getting my liquids in, but it also means I'm not very hungry.

I really donít want to go back to the stress of work but Iím getting really bored at home. My friends went to DC for the weekend so I need to find other ways to keep myself entertained. There is of course TONS of housework like cleaning and laundry to be done, but honestly who wants to do that?!?!?!

Thank you for your support everyone. I was able to come home yesterday afternoon. It has not been easy! I am struggling with taking in liquids and keeping them down. right now doc is not worried about the protein intake as much as the liquid. He wants me to try and get in 64oz. The doc just called to check up on me. So it sound like as long as the vomiting dose not continue I should be ok and my urine is light in color I am staying hydrated.

Cindy I would like to go to the event in Portland! please send me the info.
Jen glad to hear you are doing good and onto the next food stage.

Rubylips, I have the same problem. What I am doing is starting a Doctor supevised nutrition and exercise wellness program. It is three months long and we will work on my nutrition and exercise to jump start my weight loss again. Another thing in addition to everything you are doing I am reading Connie Stapleton's book "Eat It Up!" so that I can work on my food issues. I also want to try Chef Dave Fouts (he had RNY) book "Ditch Your Diet in 30 Days" After I go through the book and reduce recipe sizes down to one or two servings! Keep up what you are doing and your body should soon get back on program! Also be sure to measure yourself as you could be loosing inches with the "fat" shifting around.

I am busy today arranging to attend the NW Weight Loss Convension in Portland Oct 28-30, 2011. Four of us on Gastric Bypass Sparklers team are going to share a room for the conference so...... Look out Portland here comes the Gastric Bypass Sparklers Pouch Club!

Have a great day everyone!

I really appreciate being able to track my food and excercise, but I am one stuck momma! I have weighed the same going on 3 months now. I know I eat too much at each meal, so I am working on that. I upped my excercise a little by adding small weights and on the treadmill I set my incline higher to work on my hind end!

I cut a million recipes from magazines but continue to eat the same ding dong thing everyday.

Brendalee, Here is the website for the NW Weight Loss Conference.

http://nwweightlossconference.com/

This event is much smaller than the Obesity Help Event but will cover a lot of the same topics. I would recommend doing what I am doing and that is signing up for the conference $50 and the pre-conference workshop with Connie $35. Many of the same vendors will be present at this event. As to which to attend. $$$$$ the Obesity Help Event is great but if she lives near Portland and has never attended an Event then starting with the more local event is probably wise. Obesity Help Events are every year. Chef Dave will be there to help with food prep and cooking. Connie Stapleton, PhD will be there to help with our relationship to food. Katie Jay will be there with her NAWLS organization and some basic info. So I think the smaller event will have plenty of good information. As to being a local. Make a weekend out of it and stay at the hotel so you can enjoy the evening activities and not have to rush home to take care of anyone but you. Bring photos before and after physical and digital, bring a great outfit and participate in the Before and After Fashion Show! Bring money in case Slimpressions is there with a sample sale!

Keynote speakers are different but very well known in the field. I especially want more time with Connie especially after starting to read her book Eat It Up!. I am still in the section of identifying the various areas that make up me and can not wait until I reach the part on how to change my relationship with food. I am also looking at this as an opportunity to hone my skills and develope new skills. I have done a lot of research and am on facebook with many of the speakers and workshop leaders at the various events but still there is much for me to learn about this new life and how to be successful weight wise!
Time to make dinner. A Hamburger made the Chef Dave way.

cindy

Happy Thursday everybody! I had my 2 week follow up today and it went well. Doctor moved me on to mushy foods. Moist meats next week. I am good to swim and drive now :) Should go back to work in two weeks. Today I tried some mushy stuff and it did get a little stuck but I worked through it. I tried my own plain version of noodleless lasagna tonight. I don't think I baked it long enough though.

Tomorrow it's supposed to be 113 with the heat index so I think I'll be in the pool, whether it's at the Y or my neighborhood pool I think it needs to happen :)

Have a dull pain on my right side this evening. Hurts when I bend over. Not sure what it is but will just remain aware unless it gets worse.

Cindy K the reason I ask is my sister lives in Portand and this would be a lot cheaper than going to the one in New Orleans. In your opinon if you had to choose one which do you think would be the better one to go to?

I am on chapter 5. I am also the first youtube interview on her A PostOp and A Doc website. Interview is not yet up. I met her and Cari De La Cruz (A PostOp) at the Obesity Help Event in Bellevue. I am supposed to get back to them when I have finished reading the book. I am learning a lot from it.

Tisha, Water aerobics is great, I have been doing it since the 80's with a break in the middle for about 8 years and have been doing it straight for the last 8-10 years. There are four forms of water fitness classes. Water walking wearing water shoes and water restance gloves. You walk quickly in the pool and move your arms and gloved hands back and forth (arms straight) and creating water reistance. Then there is water yoga (hard to find a class) it is yoga moves done in the water. Third there is shallow water aerobics which is a mix of cardio and hand boey resistance exercises. Forth there are deep water classes (my favorite but very hard to find) where you exercise in the pools deep end using body belts, noodles, or just treading water. The exercises are the same as shallow water but it takes more core strenght when you can not touch the ground. It is especialy good for those with joint and back issues.

Ruthie, I found out the dates. The conference ends sunday the 30th. It starts Friday 28th (1pm if go to Connie's pre-conf workshop which I intend to do). It is at the airport Sheraton I believe so you could go for friday and saturday and then take a hotel bus to the airport or train station early Sunday morning to make it back in time for your performance. Think about it. hotel is 114/night plus taxes so I am guessing cost to be about 130/night. There will be a fashion show on Saturday night too (you could model your weight loss which will be quite a lot by end of October!)

For anyone interested there is a weight loss surgery conference in Portland Oregon Oct 28-30, 2011. I will try to post the website for info this weekend. Speakers include Connie Stapleton, Phd (author of Eat It Up!), Chef Dave Fouts, Katie Jay and others. Early bird is $50 before September.

Well lunch is over. back to work.

cindy

Cheryl, Do you want to go with me and a couple of others to the Portland conference?

Cheryl and Ruthie- Congrats on successful surgeries! I am really glad to hear that you are doing well.

Jen- I am really glad that you are healing well and that you are ready to exercise. I have never done water aerobics myself, but they sound fun.

Yesterday I did my 12 minute mile on the treadmill and then I did 3 miles on the elliptical in 25 minutes. I have plans on increasing my exercise though and hope to go back to Zumba in a couple of weeks. If I decide to go with another health club then I might be doing SPIN classes again. I LOVE THEM! My hubby doesn't exercise with me anymore, so iit has just been me and Pandora the last couple of weeks emoticon At least it shows me that I am strong and I can do this by myself.

Jen, That is fantastic. I enjoyed my Y but had to move to LA Fitness when the Y cancelled my deep water aerobics class. If your Y has a deep water fitness class then try it. I used to love the deepwater class. LA Fitness only has shallow water classes.

Cheryl I will sparkmail you about an event in Portland (OR not Maine) in October. It is with one of the speakers from the Obesity Help Event. I have to find the dates first then I will sparkmail you about it.

Cheryl I'm so happy to hear that everything went well with your surgery! I was thinking about you and hoping it would :)

Today I joined the local YMCA. I am excited because I can go to any of the 3 local YMCA's with my membership. Which is nice because I have more choices for classes/times and if I'm in a different part of my area I can go to a different one. I love love love water aerobics so I'm looking forward to getting the all clear from my doctor tomorrow to return to the pool.

Hi everyone! I am in the hospital, my surgery went well yesterday. I don't know if I go home today or tomorrow yet! I started off real slow with my progress today. But I have walked the hall once and am sitting up now on my laptop. Thank you for all the well wishes. I will post more when I get home.

Happy news today as my BMI dropped below 50. Now at 315lbs I am still seriously obese but I was happy to see it drop below 50.

Worried that I'm losing weight too fast but trying hard to get my protein and vitamins in so I will hold off worrying. Follow up appointment (2 weeks) with my doctor on Thursday so I can ask her what she thinks.

Hope everyone is doing well. I've been fine. Trying out a few different sleep positions as I continue to heal. Doing a lot of sleeping these days. Guess I'm using my energy to heal and walk the dogs. Haha.

Here is something you can laugh at, last week my daughter's dog loved me off my exercise ball. Fell over backward. Yesterday I was getting on my bike and fell. Big lump on my leg today. Feeling pretty clumsy.

You are doing great Ruthie! Keep up the good work. I need to get a digital copy of the photo!

Tammy - Sorry you are ill. Pink Eye (conjuctivitis) and sinus infection what a nasty combination. Take good care of yourself.

Jen- You are doing great! Congrats on the loss so far!

Tammy I hope you feel better soon. Sinus infections are the worst. I've had two this year and one turned into bronchitis. Take care of yourself.

Cindy I know the pain of primary care physicians. I hope you find one you like. It makes all the difference.

Ruthie, I'm doing the lovenox shots too. Only 5 more to go!!!! I will be happy to not stick myself in the tummy every day, but hey! it's better than a blood clot and it's not forever.

Did well today as I got to spend time with friends. Definitely exhausted and lots of stuff to do around the house.

Scale says 317.8 (down from 350) I guess when you have to lose as much as I do it comes of fairly quickly, Trying to stay on top of my protein and doing great with my vitamins. Walking hasn't been a problem so I'm doing good with my exercise. I still can't get over how different my face already looks....

So happy to see you Ruthie out and about and in good spirits! Keep up the good work.

Jen - glad to see you doing well too. Its hot in my neck of woods to. I've been inside staying in the a/c as much as I can.

Well - I have hit the 160's! Can't believe it. 65lbs gone from initial doc visit on 2/4, but about 50 lbs since surgery. July 31 I will be 17 almost 18 wks out from surgery. I'm in the same boat as Tisha. All my 14's are big and I know need to look for 12's. I've bought all my stuff so far from Goodwill and so glad I did. I need to find a dress for a wedding at the end of August in Chicago. My mom gave me 2 of hers. They are cute. Long dresses tank style each with a small short sleeve sweater. Not sure I want that for a wedding on a boat. I'll have to shop around first. Anyone have any ideas of where I should shop?

I've had a very rough week health wise. Pink eye has a strong hold on me. Then on Friday I developed a sinus infection. I found my antibiotics from my last one in March and started taking them today. I have no sense of smell and I cannot taste anything either. Making it VERY difficult to eat. Sleeping tonight is definitely going to be a chore.

My husband and youngest son come home tomorrow night from Cub Scout camp. Can't wait to see them. I've missed them so much. Only gone since Thursday but seems like forever. My oldest son leaves in the morning for Boy Scout camp until next week Saturday. Trying to make sure he has all he needs all day today. Gosh 11 year olds are lazy!

Almost time for me to head to bed. Hope everyone is doing well. Most of us are stuck in these really HOT and HUMID temps. DRINK DRINK DRINK!! So important!

Stay positive and smile ya'll. We're all in this together and doing FAB!!

Hi Again
We drove to the VM Clinic this afternoon to pick up a medication called Lovenox. Injections. The pharmacy was to be open until 2:pm but when we arrived it was closed. The sign on the window said it would close at 1:00pm. It was a 70 mile round trip. We stopped at our daughter's but she was at a dog training session. so we said hi to our S_I_L. and our 6yr old grandson, Carson. At least it got me out of the house for awhile I'll be glad to finish the full liquid stage and get on to the next phase

It was a beautiful day today and we had some sun! I think it hit 80*. We've had a really cold July this year.

Hope you are all feeling well tonight!

Since I came off the diuretic meds due to high potassium I gained 5 pounds, my feet, ankles and calfs have swelled. They look ok in the morning but by night are really swollen. I forgot to call the endo today to tell him but I will call on Monday. He took me off it a couple of weeks ago. I think I need to go back on the diuretic as the swollen feet and ankles makes my shoes too tight and is not good for my body. I also got a letter today from my primary care and she is leaving the clinic. Another doc bites the dust! This is the 3rd primary care to leave in 4 years. I only seem to have them for 1 year before they leave. So I will have to find a new primary care.

Hi Everybody!
Today was a good day even with the heat index keeping it around 120 degrees. I took 3 walks with the dogs and even went to see some friends tonight. I let them drive me and I made sure I stayed well hydrated. I took a shake with me to sip on as I visited. They were so happy to see me and very supportive. I've lost about 30lbs since my pre op visit on June 30th and they told me they could see the difference. Time for bed, I might just go get a manicure tomorrow!

Tisha Ė Great job! Itís awesome that you felt ďnormalĒ in a group picture. Is your husband going to lose that extra 10lbs with you? Haha! Men!

Cindy Ė I went to the website to check out the May 2012 event in Las Vegas. Looks awesome! Something I think Iíll start saving up for! (I love any reason to go to Vegas and this one will be a great help to me!) You have such amazing knowledge to share and Iím so blessed to be a part of this group while I go through this life change.

Ruthie Ė I am so happy everything went well for you! Itís amazing what a difference a week makes, last week this time I was in your shoes (hospital bed) and tonight I was able to dress normally (no pj pants) and go spend some time with friends! I'm still healing but I feel so much better than I did just a week ago.

Cheryl Ė I know that nervous feeling, youíll do great. I agree with your idea to do liquid the day before and I would eat healthy from here on out. Avoid anything with high fat content. Even if your surgeon didnít request it, heíll thank you and youíll know you made it easier for him to operate on you safely.

Brenda Ė Iím sorry to hear youíre having troubles. I hope they get you fixed up soon!

Tammy Ė Thanks for the great advice! I am learning how to ďspice upĒ this food stage and am happy that itís almost over

Vicky Ė how are you feeling??? Any luck eating?

- Jen

I am so excited! I put on a pair of pants that fit well 3 weeks ago and today they fell off. I have been a little down in the dumps because of all my tummy trouble the last few weeks so I decided to buy myself some new pants! I went to Kohls and tried on size 12's and they were loose so I decided I would just see how a size 10 would fit and guess what -- They were perfect!!!! I wear a size 10!!!I can't believe just 6 months ago I was in a 20 -22 !! Today was an awesome day!!!

Happy anniversary Tisha!!

Tisha, I never forget when your surgery anniversary is as you had it on my birthday! Glad you are doing so well! congrats on loosing so much a week. When I was five months out I was happy to loose 4 pounds in a month! I can not imagine 4 pounds in a week.

Have a great anniversary!

Boy I need to get some rest, My mind is getting all muddled and I am calling people the wrong names. Rest is very important. I think a nap before exercise is in order for me.

Hi all,

We have been really busy at work working on an International designation that finally happened this past Wednesday. Starting next week, i will be available more. I am 21 week out (almost 5 months post op) and this week I lost a total of 4.4 pounds and now I am in the 170's! I finally broke my plateau that I was on for a couple of weeks. There is this one thing that I crave above everything else. It is a tuna mixed with pico de gallo (onion, tomato, jalepeno, and cilantro) and avocado on top of a tostado with feta cheese. I think I could eat it every day! LOL

I have still averaged only 3-4 days of exercise a week. I really think I need to bump it back up though to 5-6 days a week. I also have set my phone to go off during the day to remind me of my vitamins better. I am shedding hair and though I do not have bald spots its not fun. I did expect this know, and know that it will stop eventually.

To all you new surgery patients...I have read the posts and am glad that you are doing well. The first month is the roughest and you will have buyers regret at one point, but know that things will get better and that you will not regret it after you have given it some time. Just remember to follow all your surgeons advice on everything and don't worry about the weight...it will come off as long as you do what you are told to do.

All my 14's are very loose and my 12's are no longer really tight, so I am so happy that I can walk into any store and buy clothes now ( even though I have only bought a couple of shirts anywhere than Goodwill). I took a group picture the other day with my coworkers and for the first time I didn't look at myself and say- WOW I need to lose weight. My goal weight is only 20 more pounds, although my hubby said I should shoot for 30 pounds more...we shall see. All I know if that I feel great and I know I will feel better tonight after an 8 hour sleep since this week it has only been 6 hours at night. My 12 year wedding anniversary is next Saturday and so I have met my goal of 179 before I the date that I set it. I am so exited!

Oh, I will take more pictures tomorrow. I can't see the change since my last ones 7 pounds ago, but will take more anyway.

Brendalee, It is definately worth it. Chef Dave is very helpful, Connie is so much fun and her workshop really makes you look at your issues with food and see that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Can you get there by car? if so maybe someone from your support group would like to go and you could share a room. That is what I did. I had to drive only a short way about 45 minutes but we even had some from California that came up to washington state.

I considered the cost as just another medical bill as I focused on learning as much as I could to help me with my weight loss and health. I went to the question and answer sessions on Friday and helped assemble the participant bags in the evening for use on saturday. Many organizations and surgeons are involved and there are discount codes that can be used to lower the registration cost.
If you can not go to this event then plan to go to the Las Vegas Meet and Greet with WLSFA next may. email or facebook Antonia Namnath and ask for info on matching you up with a roommate at the hotel. There are discounts for early registration for hotel and conference. I will definately be going to the Meet and Greet! I already have a group of about 10 who are interested including our own Ruthie! Maybe you and her could share a room!

Ruthie, I am not surprised you were awake. Some people have lots of energy at the beginning but in a few days are just exhausted when the adrenaline wears off! Take care and see you Wednesday.
I just spoke to my supervisor about the days off I will need for the weight loss jump start program I am beginning on August 9 (Aug 10 will be 11 months out!)

Ruthie,
I am so glad to hear that you are doing okay. Rest and sipping is the best advice I was given.Contiue to take care of your self and we look forward to hearing from you in the future.

CindyK thank you for the information. I checked out the site and even though it is a little bit a way New Orleans would be the closest place for me. I would love to go, I think it would be fun and interesting you made it sound worth it.

Deborah, Thanks for the complement but I am still in the obese category (bmi30-31 depending upon the day) and so it is really important to me to get down close to normal weight if not in normal weight range. I want my bmi to be under 27 if possible. There is still a double stomach and that is what I want gone. It is better but still very present. I did not like it when my surgeon said that this might be all I would loose from surgery and that I would need to do something else to loose the rest of it. It just made me angry enough to go out and do something. Plus I learned last weekend that I really do still have a number of food issues that I need to work on so that I do not ever regain the weight. That is what terrifies me the most is the possibility that that might happen and that is what keeps me on the forum and going to events, and reading and learning as much as I can about my surgery and life after RNY.
So as I always say I am a child of God and a work in progress being molded and modeled by the Master!

Cindy you look great in all of your new pictures. I hope the new jump start program works for you. It seems kind of weak to say, but you look terrific and if you feel terrific be happy with yourself. We put too much emphasis on a number when good health should be the goal.

Cheryl my doctor not only had me on liquids he had me on clear liquids for a couple of days. There was nothing in there when he started to rearrange. Strange how docs all do it a little differently. Good luck with your surgery. Don't be scared, It will all be over before you know it and you will be on your way to a healthy way of life.

Hi, Cheryl. Glad you have been spared the liquid diet. I didn't have to do that either 11 years ago. Won't be long now!

Cheryl, You may want to start adding some liquid meals(maybe one meal) into your diet to help you get used to them as you will only have them at the beginning after surgery. It will help your body adjust to a liquid diet so that it will not be as much of a shock.
If you go straight from all food to all liquid meals your body will not be happy.

Iwillbefit, How are you doing? Is everything going well with the clear and full liquid food stages? I know Ruthie is doing ok because I saw her but I do not know about you.

I am definately in a long stall, I had a couple days when I lost a few pounds due to medication reaction but it jumped back up after I came off the meds. I did make an appointment to start a Jump Start your Weight Loss program for Weight Loss Surgery Patients. It is a 3 month program and you usually loose about 20 pounds so hopefully that will get me close to goal. I am approaching 11 months out in a couple of weeks and still have the 35 pounds to go to make it to goal. I want this to succeed so I must fight to make it happen. Sunday I will start tracking both my food and my exercise so that I will be ready for my appointment on Aug 9 (one day before my 11 month anniversary).

We I am getting excited and a little nervous. Surgery is in five days now! The Doc has me on 1200 calories a day. I donít have a liquid diet like most people I have heard from. I do plan on doing all liquids the day before surgery.

Brendalee, There are two more Obesity Help Events this year. One in Long Island, New York Oct 21-22 and One in New Orleans, LA Sept 9-10. go to their website www.obesityhelp.com and then to the community tab and events under that tab for the dates.

Also, I already have plans to attend the WLSFA (Weight Loss Surgery Foundation of America) Meet and Greet Event in LasVegas May 18, 2012 (starts at 3pm) and goes through May 20, 2012 (ends at noon). It will be a lot of fun. I will be sharing a room with 3 other RNY gals!

The workshops at events like this and the vendor displays and question and answer sessions are invaluable. I learned so much. Not sure how much more I will mention in blogs as it is hard to remember what I have already talked about. I have hit some of the highlights! I did not take notes during the program and keynotes as I was so engrossed in the speaker and panels.

There is a new resource for people who have questions about weight loss surgery on facebook. APostOpandADoc It is post-op patient Cari De La Cruz and psychologist Connie Stapleton, Phd Questions can be posted. I will let everyone know when the youtube interview with me, Cari and Connie is up and ready.

Hi Everyone,
I know it has been a while, but with working 12 hour days now it doesn't leave much time for anything else but sleep. I ended up calling my surgeon yesterday, I am having a hard time eating right now. Anytime I eat anything thicker than water I have severe pain. The surgeon has put me on some meds (still have to go pick them up) and wants me to go back on liquids until Monday then I see him on Wednesday. I am sort of glad about the liquids I really don't want anything thicker it hurts way to much. Hopefully the meds will help and everything will be okay.
Cindy K- I am really interested in the Obesity Help thing you went to, are you blogging about what you learned? When are the other meetings going to be and is it on their site? I am glad to be back and looking forward to chatting with you'all.

Tammy, I will probably not see Ruthie until next week at support group but she should be back online tomorrow evening or Friday. I know tomorrow she will probably start off the day with a popcycle!
You are so right Tammy, liquid stage is boring. I was lucky that my clear liquid stage was only a couple of days and I did not mind the full liquid stage as I still was not interested in food.

Jen, I think you will find that you will do fine after you get off stage 1 and 2. For me stage 3 soft foods was the hardest, but I think it will be an easier food stage for you. We each have one food stage that is more difficult than others. The soft food was hard on me, I have not been able to eat chicken or most meats since RNY(except ground meat with a sauce). I keep trying to eat the various problem foods. But chicken and meat still does not work well for me and that was the first thing I was told to eat when on soft food stage. I had to go back from soft food to pureed for an additional 3 weeks before my pouch would tolerate soft food (except no chicken salad!). The first soft food that I could eat with no problem was steamed or poached fish (snapper, halibut, cod, tilapia). I think I was on those pureed foods for about 4-6 weeks. When I could handle the soft foods, I quickly went on to the other food stages.

The time that was worst for me was when I was on full liquids I helped my sister the EMT (who came to help me out and we both stayed at my parents home) prepare dinner for everyone. We all discussed favorite meals from when we were young. So then everyone wanted those recipes for dinner or lunches. So I had to help make all my favorite meals, yet I could not even taste them! I did well until I got to one dish that had ground beef, noodles, carrots, and cottage cheese. I broke down and had to leave the kitchen as I so wanted to taste the cottage cheese layer mix. I could not sit and chat with them during the meal either that night. In fact I may try to make that dish this weekend! It would fit into my current diet well.
So you just do what you have to do like Tamy said. You are definately doing great!
