Good Morning all,

Summer?? Hard to believe we are more than half way through July! Summers seem so short in Maine.

Our library is extra busy with summer residents and visitors. This is a special year being the Acadia National Park Centennial year 2016. Literally hundreds of special programs, and events happening!

How is everyone doing? I am holding pretty steady. Wish I could step it up a notch to start losing again.

Enjoy every day, it will not be repeated!

Enjoying summer? Had a "campout" in my backyard with my Girl Scout troop and another local troop last weekend. Now I feel inspired to get out my bike and try riding it to work. Anybody bike to work? Might not be possible all the time for me, but a few times during the summer might be a nice change of pace....or a really sweaty ordeal.

That's very true. We do everything from board books about ABC's and 123's to 1500 page medical pharmacology textbooks to Aboriginal history to Harry Potter. Keeps our minds sharp.

Since I have experience in technical services and cataloging, I can only imagine! As a college student, I worked as a library student assistant in technical services. The university had a school of education that had several classes on children's literature, so we constantly had new materials to catalog for that collection. I loved seeing the kids books, but it was harder to feel progress when you catalog 30 picture books versus 30 books on history, etc.

Yeah, it can be a huge undertaking....even just in the increased amount of cataloguing we do! The band provides the space, utilities, phones, internet access, some of the salary, etc. We/the grant provide most of the salary, the benefits, training, catalogued/processed books, etc.

The academic libraries in my system aren't but I believe 2 of our 3 joint public library will do SOMETHING.

As an explanation...my university doesn't have tons of students but we're really spread out geographically over the northern 2/3 of my province. We serve a lot of communities where post-secondary education isn't common cause people can't afford to/can't deal with moving away for school. 2 big campuses, 12 regional centers. 10 of those centers are on First Nations (aka Indian Reserves). Only 3 of the regional centers are in communities that have public libraries. The rest? Lucky if they have a school library. So we've been getting grants from the provincial government and partnering with willing chiefs, councils and communities to open up joint public libraries between them and the University. They contain some stuff for the students at the uni, but a large part of the collection is geared towards public library stuff. The staff there are usually locals who are working on library tech diplomas. They do do summer programs, and will this year, except for the staff at our newest location, who are still getting settled in.

That's one thing I enjoy about being in Canada and at an academic library. We don't get tax forms here. :D The post office is about the only place, outside of places like H&R Block that actually have them here in my town.

My library isn't doing that blind date thing, but the public library in my town is....might have to take advantage of it.

How is everybody surviving tax season (especially you public librarians)? I have been filling in a few hours a week at my local public library while the cataloger is out, and even I got hit up this morning about tax forms. Nothing like an employer who has waited to fill out W2s for their employees.

Anybody doing blind date with a book displays for Valentine's Day?

I was just thinking about "A Christmas Carol" today at work, and wondering what the visits from the ghosts would be like for various people. emoticon

HIKERSAN, the parade is fairly short, about 6 blocks, but we walked the girls from the event space to the parade, through the parade, and then back to the event space. By my SPAT, I logged about 20 minutes of walking, so I'm guessing maybe a bit less than a mile.

Hikersan, we just wrapped library books for patrons to check out as usual. It's just a fun surprise!

Yesterday afternoon we had a marathon reading of "A Christmas Carol" at our library. The participants read for 5 minutes at a time before handing off the story to the next person. It was not as well-attended as we hoped, but it was fun! And it took 3 hours, 3 minutes to read it all the way thru.

Hello all,

Unfortunately, some of the seasonal baking and I have made friends. Too much sugar on the lips, results in weight on the hips! emoticon Guess that is why we have a new day every 24 hours, so we can make a fresh start!

How long of a walk was your parade LYNSINGR? It is nice to have the youth involved. It is wonderful when adults see the need to volunteer so our young folks have the opportunities provided by various youth organizations.

I like the idea of opening a book every day, Who provided the books? Sounds like a fun plan.

Another great weather day here in Maine. What a difference from last year at this time. We had already had a couple of feet of snow for 6 weeks!

Best to all

How was everyone's weekend? The holiday season is in full swing, and I had a lot of stuff going on. We had a multi-troop Christmas party for Girl Scouts, and we participated in the local Christmas parade. We had more girls than we could fit on the float, so several of the older girls and I walked the parade route. Talk about getting in some exercise in the cold!

We're doing something clever Christmas. We have so many holiday novels so we're wrapping a quantity of them up in Xmas wrapping paper and patrons are checking them out and getting a "surprise gift"! It's been a hit----I'd be so pleased if you took this idea for your own library. Just be sure to leave a little window in the wrapping for the bar code!

We also had a wrapping session for parents and grandparents for an advent calendar sort of thing. They came and wrapped 25 children's books so their child could have a surprise story to unwrap every night until Christmas Day.

Hello all,

Our library, the Ellsworth Public Library, www.ellsworth.lib.me.us/ is a partner for the Acadia National Park Centennial in 2016, www.acadiacentennial2016.org/ This also will be the 100th year of the National Park Service.

As a partner organization, we are planning at least one program a month revolving around our famous park. February we are part of the One Park One Read program. Other months, we are hosting artists, and authors who have written about Acadia National Park photography, hiking trails, carriage trails (Mr. Rockefeller's Roads), railroad history, history of the park, plants of the park, geology of the park, and more. It is an exciting project for us as a partner.

What are your libraries doing for the 2016 year?

Have a healthy happy season!

Sandy

Hi everyone! I hope you had a good Thanksgiving! We had some nasty weather, but the positive side is that meant some extra calorie burning through shoveling snow & ice. emoticon As the holiday season is in full force, I hope that you keep making healthy choices and don't beat yourself up for being human!

Hello fellow librarians,

I have been busy as we have a new director; been helping her get up to speed, adjusting to a different style of management, and a lot of changes on our library.

On a personal level, I have added more care-giving to my plate as my family is needing a bit more assistance.

I still try to hold weekends for Grammy Day, for my grandchildren.

I am so thankful that the winter has held off for a bit this year. Last year we had already had 2 feet of snow for the month of November! That made for a very long winter. This year looks to be better already!

I have been following SparkGuy's Blog with his Fuel for Improvement system. It has given me a boost to get moving again.

How are all of you doing?

Thinking of you!

I didn't think that I'd have issues with the time change either, but I've been wanting to go to bed really early, like 7:30, and forcing myself to stay up, but waking up at 4:30 in the morning.

That sounds like a lot of fun! When I was in college, the student staff of the library organized themed dress up days on Fridays. It was always a lot of fun! When one of my friends moved to a full-time job outside the library, we had a hat & tie party to send her off. We all wore the craziest hats and ties that we could find!

Hi Lysinger! We love to play dress-up for any occasion at our library. A few weeks back, we dressed as pirates all week long in honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day! This week we've been dressing up for Halloween too. Fun stuff!

This Saturday the children's librarian is going to have some activities for the kids and those of us at the circ desk will be in full holiday regalia!

Hi everyone! Are you ready for Halloween? Is your library doing any special events centered around Halloween? My mom is the curator for a local museum, and they are bringing in storytellers to entertain the kids as they trick or treat through the night. It seems to be a fun event for all ages!

It has been a bit quiet on the team lately. Hope everyone is doing well! I injured my knees and have been limited physically, so I've realized I've got to be more diligent with my nutrition and strength training. The seated chair exercise videos have been really helpful. I like the idea of journaling my experiences at the library too! emoticon

I'm happy to say that I've settled into my new job and all those procedures that I felt would never "click" finally did. I still have a lot to learn, but who doesn't. Getting to know the regular patrons, interacting with the kids, getting familiar with what's popular---I love working at the library!!! Really, how lucky are we?

Believe them, they are most likely right on target!

It amazed me how much there is to learn when I started 7 years ago, and I am still learning!

Enjoy,

Oh, do you journal? It could be fun to jot down your funny, odd, etc, experiences. Trust me, you WILL have them. They are good for a laugh on a rainy day!

Just finished my first week as "circulation specialist" at the library with it dizzying highs and miserable lows of learning all the procedures. That blasted computer---I love and hate it! I think if I could do each procedure at least 4000 more times I just might have it.

My co-workers and managers are lovely and assure me that I'm doing a great job at catching on and I almost believe them.

So excited! I'm starting my new job at the library today. I just can't believe it--it's a dream come true. Any tips for a new circulation specialist? I just have to keep telling myself that I won't learn all the procedures the first day.

By the way, my husband is the branch manager at the library in the neighboring county, so we're a 2-library-system family. How cool is that?

Here we are . . . July already! Hope everyone has a wonderful long weekend doing something fun with family and friends!

Our library is in full swing with summer reading programs. I think we have 16 Adults, 55 children and 5 teens signed up to date. There may be some stragglers, who are always welcome.

We set up a local hero board on the Adult side, so people can name their own hero. That is going well, and is always interesting to read. One person already put that librarians are their heroes!

Our book group is reading Still Life with Bread Crumbs by Anna Quindlen next month. I took out our MP3 copy last night so I can listen to it as I travel to work and back.

I have lost about 8 pounds in the last month, I confess that most was due to stress, but it did get me back on a healthier eating track. I would like to lose 9 more to enter the land of Onederville!

So how are all of you doing? very quiet in here!

Happy summer!

We have Stuart Woods as our visiting author tonight. He has written over 60 books, with 39 on the NYT best seller list. I am expecting a full house!

How is everyone doing? Been quiet on this team, not that I have been doing my full part!
Our director is working her last day Friday, and we are short two other positions, that leaves the rest of us filling in the gaps until our Board hires someone. VERY busy times!

Hope you are all having a nice summer and working on a healthy lifestyle!

Hi all,

Finally getting my email notifications from SparkPeople, which is really nice.

I am walking a 5k with 4 other SparkPeople from Maine to benefit our library. We are having a local color run to raise funds for our renovation and expansion.
I am sure I will come in last, no time to prepare!

Will try to let you know how it goes!

Happy summer . . . enjoy, it flies by quickly!

Hi folks,

I have not forgotten you, I give the team bonus points almost daily. For some reason I no longer get ANY emails from SparkPeople. I have followed the directions on their help page, bu tso far nothing has worked.

Nice to see that you folks are still here and going strong.

Will try to touch base more often. Things have been a bit crazy at work for a few months, and i don't see the end in sight at this point.

Does anyone have fun programs for the summer? Any great authors visiting?

We have Stuart Woods, and Tess Gerritsen coming.

Will try to get back here sooner than later!

Stay motivated, and healthy!

The graphic novel class was only four weeks, which is great for me being due to give birth in about a week, but I'm sad because the class was so interesting. This is for a school library media/materials course. There's a lot of reading, reviewing etc. For the last assignment, we had to do quantitative and qualitative reading scores for 9 different books! I also discovered that I'm not good at writing plot summaries (in my opinion) because I'm too worried about giving too much away and then no one will want to read the book!
The next unit is on diversity and we have more leeway-not just books or specific genres (like you must have 1 math picture book, 1 science text for the HS level, etc) so I've got a nice stack building from my library of all levels, all types, and a couple DVDs too! I'm hoping to get 2 completed each week, so by the time the whole assignment is due, I'm already done! Of course, best-laid plans and all.

Exercise is my Prozac.

So true! I had one in the summer that we were given online access a month early so that we could get those first assignments knocked out before class even started. Is this for the graphic novel class or a different one?

Finished a big assignment for class. I have to submit a discussion post and then after that I've got nearly a month to work on the next item due. Front-loaded courses can be a blessing and a curse.
Hope everyone is doing well!

Officially 9 months (36 weeks) pregnant yesterday. One more month to go. Last week of my 4 week Graphic Novels class. I wish it had been longer, I learned a lot in just 4 weeks. I especially learned that I am rubbish at writing plot summaries. Of course, between the two courses this semester I need to write 20 of them (not an exaggeration).
Also, I think The Scarlet Letter has gotten even more difficult to read since I last read it. I start and 15 minutes later I'm ready to nap.

Took the puppy for a walk again today. She is getting better about staying by my side. Hopefully, she will stop barking/whining at strangers and other dogs soon. :) I need to check out some more dog training books from the library!

Happy Groundhog's Day! Took my puppy for a walk today. I signed both of us up for the 2015 Idita-Walk, so we have to walk 1,049 minutes before the end of March!

Did anybody go to ALA midwinter? Looks like the weather was an obstacle this year!

Thanks for sharing! Sounds like an interesting class. I will have to check out the text. It also sounds like you have a busy semester, especially when you are preparing for another child!

This semester I'm starting down my chosen career path-Youth Services. I"m also expecting baby boy #2 in March.
One of my courses is short (4 weeks) and is about Graphic Novels. Our primary text is Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud. I highly recommend it to, well, everyone, but especially if you don't "get comics" or such or if you are interested in art in general. It's a great read (and fairly quick.) I learned so much from reading it.
