I did get my laundry finished today and then I called my sponsor. Hadn't talked with her in awhile. I did find out she is going to stay in Iowa this winter. Her daughter has some serious health issues (not life-threatening, but a lot of stuff going on). Plus she went to the doctor and a spot was found on her lung, but the doctor doesn't think it's cancer. The doctor is basing that on the location and that the shape is too symmetrical - not irregular. She got a CT scan 3 months ago and next week goes for one more for comparison. She says she's feeling fine - no trouble breathing or anything like that. So, I'm praying for a good outcome.

Then, a neighbor came over and invited us to an open house she was having for Halloween - nothing fancy, just a quick stop in if we could. DH was out shopping. He got home at 3:30 and the event started at 4:00. We put the groceries away and walked over there. Stayed for a couple of hours. DH had been making chili in the crock pot all day, so we had that for supper, but it was later - 7:00. Then I had that to clean up and re-package the meat he bought today.

Then DH was in the attic looking at the furnace that is up there and wouldn't you know he forgot some tools, so he calls me and I have to run and get them for him and bring them up the stairs (it's hard for him to go up and down ladders - actually, the doctor doesn't even want him on ladders at all), and so I don't mind, but I was just getting tired. It turned out to be quite a long day. And I was on my feet for most of it. Even over at the open house, we were standing around talking with people.

Leslie - It was chilly, windy and cloudy all day today. But tomorrow will be sunny and 71 with a light breeze, so it should be a perfect day!
Did your rain turn to snow?
Halloween was not a huge deal for me either - other than the candy. I was more excited when my DS was young and now I love to see the pictures of Dakota and Ryan in their costumes!

Kate - I did ask my DH about the chimineas and he said that wouldn't work for us because he's got so much paper (from his dad's estate) that he needs to burn and needs the air to be able to "blow thru" the screen so all the paper burns up. And he wants a screen top so the pieces of paper don't blow out of the fire pit. At this point it's more for burning paper than burning wood. But you are right about it lasting a lot longer. They sell those all over down here and especially in Mexico. Years ago, we bought several for the kids up North and we have a small one in a garden area for decoration.

Well, I think I will watch a couple of my shows and go to bed.

Happy Friday!

Mema - That was a huge change in the temperature! How is it today? It's very rainy here and windy too, and the rain will change to snow later. I'm sorry your temp had that big change while you were out! I remember sudden and huge changes like that from WI.
I'm glad you went out to the Golden Corral for dinner.
I've heard of a lot of people with outdoor fire pits, but I've never actually seen one, so I have no comment about that, except that I hope your next one will last longer!
My shape change has nothing to do with weight since that hasn't changed at all.

Kate - I did think of stirring everything up in a bowl for the fajitas, and that actually gave me the idea of using the crockpot. Why not stir and cook in the same vessel? It was pretty good, but I think I'll go back to using a frying pan next time. I like that flavour better. Thanks for the recipe!
I can imagine how things must have been in Boston after 9/11. I'm sorry you knew someone who knew someone.
I'm sorry your friend is having hot flashes and night sweats. I'm glad she'll get hormones checked too. I don't have any symptoms other than my enlarging body! I just hope I won't keep getting bigger.

Hallowe'en has never been a favourite holiday of mine, except I did like to get the candy when I was a kid of course.
I'm having a quiet day today, and will be reading a lot.
I hope you're both having good days!

Mema – we’re having an unseasonable warm day today – high’s near 70 and showery. But the cold is coming in tomorrow.

Will you look at the clay chimineas, too? Our neighbors have a pretty one. It seems they would hold up to the weather down there.

After 9/11, I was one of those who knew someone who knew someone – no direct connection. But it was still quite intense around here b/c it seemed like the whole city was grieving.

Leslie – I think the effects of gravity just take over on our bodies and everything slips down. But it’s a good idea to get the hormones checked. I have a friend who is 15 years post menopause and started having hot flashes and night sweats so she’s getting hers checked, too.

The oven fajitas can be just stirred up in a big bowl if you don’t have a baggie. I just like not having less to clean up so I use the bag. How did it turn out in the crock pot?

Boy oh boy was it a hot and muggy day today............until the cold front blew in about 5:30 and the temperature dropped from 94 to 60!

I did laundry today and then we went out for dinner tonight. We had a coupon for Golden Corral (the buffet place we like down here) and then afterwards went over to Lowe's. DH is looking for an outdoor fire pit. We had one for the last 3-4 years, but it rusted out and broke in half basically. Anything that is metal is useless down here after a few years because of the humidity and heat unless you can keep it in the garage during the summer and we have too many other things we put in there before we leave - besides our other car and golf cart. But we had gotten the first one on a real good bargain, so even though we have to replace it now, it worked well for several years for us.

We saw the front move in while we were in the restaurant and by the time we were leaving, it was down right chilly! I had Capri's on and sandals!

Tomorrow I need to finish my laundry. I didn't get it all done today. And DH needs to go back to Lowe's for the fire pit because he had a coupon to use and forgot it at home.

Leslie - I know it gets harder to keep "our shape" as we get older, but it's also frustrating. I carry my weight around my middle and so when I put on a few pounds it seems like all of a sudden my waist is gone!
But keep going to your exercise class - that's still good for your health! emoticon
Yes, this book is a tough read, but I wanted it mainly to hand down to my DS. He was 17 years old when it happened and he remembers some things about it. It is very good - especially how this author wrote it - direct quotes from so many people on that day.

Kate - Oh, I'm sure that day for you was much more intense - I can understand that. Did you know anyone personally who was there?
This type of a drop in temperature is not typical, but when the cold fronts come in down here they come in fast! Most of the time I would say a typical change will be about 20 degrees.
One of the things I wish about the Bible study's I've been to at our church down here is that our Pastor seems to think he has stay "on schedule" each week. Like this past Tuesday, we barely got thru the lesson because we were discussing a separate topic for the first half of the time we were there. And I know that next week, we'll go right into Lesson 3. Which makes me think, I may email him or ask him if we can't go slower.

Well, I may read for a bit and then go to bed. I can hear the wind blowing outside - I love hearing that.

Have a great day!

Mema - I'm glad your busy day went well. You did a lot, and I'm sure your neighbour was happy to see you. My former MIL lived to 106 and was in her own apartment until the last few months of her life! She did have a helper who came in to give assistance with cleaning, shopping, and other errands, but she was on her own a lot. I used to talk to her on the phone for her birthday and the Jewish holidays. I thought of her on October 22 which was her birthday.
That book you are reading sounds tough. I think it would be too heart-breaking for me.
Are you doing laundry today? I hope it won't aggravate your knee.
That will be a drastic change in the weather for you tomorrow! How cold does it get there in winter?
I got to love the Packers during the years I lived in WI. I went to quite a few of their games in Milwaukee.
I also hope your toads are having good shelter!

Kate - I understand your feelings about the wet leaves piling up in your yard. I'm glad your lawn people do mulch some.
I was going to make those oven fajitas today, but didn't have a big plastic bag to mix everything up in, so I put it all into the crockpot and it's cooking away. I'm looking forward to having it later!

I am getting upset with my shape. I weigh the same but my breasts and bum have been expanding so I've just had to buy larger bras and undies. I've been wearing a C cup and medium panties for at least 40 years, so I'm not happy about the changes. All I can think of is that my hormones could be out of whack. I will ask my doctor about that too.
I went to the exercise class this morning. I'll have to miss the next one on Monday because of the book sale.

I hope you're both having good days!

Mema – it’s always nice to reconnect w/ people you haven’t seen in a while.

That book sounds kind of gut wrenching. Since 2 of the planes took off from Boston, there were a lot of local connections. Almost everyone knew someone who was effected (or knew someone who knew someone.)

That’s quite a weather change from 90’s to 50’s. Is that typical?

We’re working our way through 1 Corinthians – one section at a time every other week. It’s been slow getting through it.

Leslie – I know the leaves have nutrients for the soil, but honestly – I can’t this year. I don’t mind some drifting piles of crispy dried leaves in the corners of the yard. But the maple leaves are huge and weather is has been rainy all week. When the leaves fall when they are wet, like they are right now, they form mats that are several inches thick and get slimy as they rot. The lawn people do mulch some of them so some of that nutrition remains on the ground and I will add some of them to my compost heap.

It was a busy day today. Bible study went well and it was good to see some of the people there. And of course our Pastor, too!

Then I ran a few errands and went to my meeting. It was good to see them as well. After supper, I went next door to see my neighbor - she just turned 88 this October. She still lives alone, although she has a gal that comes and helps her about 3x/week. Takes her grocery shopping and to all her medical appointments. She still has all her wits about her! We had a wonderful visit - almost 2 hours!

I had ordered a book on Amazon and that came today - The Only Plane in the Sky - An Oral History of 9/11. I started reading it and it is very good! The book so far is set up with individuals and what they were doing the day before, the day of and then the day after. Each page has all different individuals own words. From First Lady Laura Bush to an artist who lived on 91st floor. I've just started it and am at the point of the control tower realizing one of the planes has been hijacked.

I wanted the book mainly to have a recorded history of what happened. The author also said everyone remembers where they were on that day, but he wanted to tell the story of the people who LIVED it that day.

Tomorrow I will probably do laundry - it's starting to pile up now! It was 92 here today and will be that or higher tomorrow and then on Thursday the high is supposed to be 57! What a change!

Leslie - My knee felt better today, but I didn't do a lot of walking on it and so I think that helped.
And the weight loss has been what I've lost over the past several years - I haven't posted my weight on this site for awhile. I know I've put on a few pounds this summer.
I didn't know you liked the Packers! That's our team, but I'm not really a football fan at all. I like to keep up as far as how they are doing, but usually keep up more with the Vikings since my DS and DH's son LOVE the Vikings!
I didn't know that about the leaves providing shelter for the toads. We had several in our little pond in the back yard (a home-made pond) and we have a ton of leaves that are in our yard. So, I hope they are getting good shelter! LOL

Kate - I hope you had a good Bible study. What are your studying? Our Pastor is doing a 4 week study (with short videos) on The Great Deceiver (Satan). This was the 2nd week, so I missed the first week. But good so far.
All of our Maple trees up North had lost their leaves before we left. We were now getting the leaves from the oak trees in our yard. Even though they lost a lot of their leaves, because we have so many oak trees, there were still trees with lots of leaves left.
I don't think I have ever seen an adult Baptism - not that our church doesn't do them, but it seems we get the infants instead.

I think I will go and do some reading now!

Happy Wednesday!

Mema - I'm glad you got your groceries; that doesn't seem like an excessive amount to be spending for when you've just returned! I'm glad you're set now.
I'm glad you talked to your aunt and she will be there Saturday.
You'll be having a busy day today! I hope everything goes well.
I didn't know that resveratrol is in peanuts and berries too. I have a friend who also has a glass of red wine every day.
I am looking forward to the book sale!
I hope your knee gets better quickly.
Congrats on your weight lost!

Kate - Interesting about the two people being baptized.
I haven't actually watched any football this year, but my teams, the Packers in the NFL and the Tiger Cats in the CFL are both doing well this year, so I'm happy to hear when they've added another win.
That's funny that some of the used books you've bought online were previously library books.
It sounds as if you will also have a busy day today. This is my Tuesday 'off' (no housekeeper) so I've been catching up online and will be reading this afternoon of course.
We're back to grey weather again today. Did you know it's recommended to leave the leaves where they fall in the yard? They provide shelter for little toads and other small creatures, and are good for the grass underneath.

I hope you're both having good days!

Mema – that’s almost exactly the amount I spent at our grocery store – restocking after our vacation. It did include two bottles of laundry detergent which is always expensive.

Hope your knee recovers from whatever is causing the pain so you can get out and walk.

I like your new ticker in your signature line. 1/3 of the way to goal!

Leslie – glad you were able to get to your class after all the weeks missed.

Our church does adult baptisms. The two people being baptized were a 13 year old boy and a 70 year old woman. The boy has grown up in our church and the woman started coming to our church about 4 years ago after she attended our Grief Share program that we run twice a year.

Our local football team (the Patriots) is so very good that they almost always win. But I just like to see good plays whoever makes them. The opposing team did make some very good plays but they also got a lot of penalties and lost yards for them. And they kept making the same mistakes.

I’ve been to the library book sales and brought home books from there. I’ve also occasionally bought used books on line and found that they were old library books that someone bought and resold. Nice profit for them. LOL

Yoga class this morning and then a conference call w/ a couple of friends and then lunch and Bible study w/ another friend. Nice morning but I have to be quick b/c there is no time in between.

The weather is grey and rainy for the whole week so I won’t be able to do any leaf raking. The maple tree is starting to lose it’s leaves and they’re all over the yard.

I did get to the grocery store and bought $124.00 worth of food and basically no meat!! DH will go to Sam's Club and buy that - the chicken, pork and beef. I didn't think we needed that much, but once I got there, there were items that we needed that I hadn't put on my list. So, we're set for awhile now!

Once I got home I did some cleaning and I also talked with my aunt to let her know we made it down here safely. She will fly down on Saturday. Her DS and DIL pick her up and bring her to Brownsville. She is at the same park that my mom (and dad) were at for a long time.

Tomorrow is my Bible study and meeting and I will also stop at Dollar Tree and Dollar General stores for a few things.

Leslie - That's a good idea of using the boneless pork chops in the crock pot. They probably stay more moist and tender.
Resveratrol is the correct name - you had it exactly right! And it is in the skin of red grapes and peanuts and berries and yes, red wine. My DH drinks about 2-3 ounces of Merlot every day. Even before AA, I never liked red wine and particularly Merlot so it's not a temptation for me at all.
I'm planning on getting out walking, but I've had a bit of pain in my left knee. Just some inflammation so I'm going to take it easy for a few more days. Not sure what it's from. Glad you went to exercise class. Sorry you will miss next week.
I remember you went to the library sale last year - what a deal - a whole bag of books for $2.00!! That's great. I hope you get a lot of good books for yourself. Good idea taking your walker with you. I think people are more aware when they see someone with a walker.

Kate - Thanks for the reminder about my signature line! I do forget about that.
The last day of our trip was long in terms of hours, but it really didn't feel that long. Maybe because DH and I talked a lot and that made the time go by faster.
I'm glad your DGS seemed more interested at church yesterday.
Your dinner did sound yummy! We had spaghetti and salad for dinner tonight.

Hope you both have a great Tuesday!

Mema - Welcome back! I'm glad you got to TX safely. The weather sounds good. It's going to be relatively warm here today, upper 50s, but by Wednesday night we could get snow! And, you had frost in Iowa!
It sounds like you've already been working hard since you've been there. I hope you get all the groceries you need today.
I always used to buy Country Harvest 12-grain bread, but they changed it to 14-grain and for some reason, I didn't care for it. Now the store carries Dempster's 12-grain, so I'm glad I like it. That will be my regular bread now. That bread outlet store sounds like a wonderful idea!
I like both bone-in and boneless pork chops - the boneless I use in the crockpot when I make the meal with sauerkraut, but for breaded chops, I like the bone-in. I wouldn't have bothered exchanging them but I already had a package of the boneless in my freezer, and I was looking forward to the breaded chops. Actually they were bigger than I thought, so I only had room for one in the pan. I did get the squash cut in half, so I had a wonderful dinner last night! The pork chop was a little thinner than the ones I've had lately, so I overcooked it a bit, but it was fine with applesauce.
I think the red grapes have more flavour than the green, and there is something in the skins that is supposed to be good for you - something like resveratrol - I know that isn't right, but it's a similar name. It's what's supposed to be good about red wine, which I'm not drinking of course.
I usually have yogurt for breakfast, or eggs, and if I have eggs, I have either toast or a hash brown potato patty, or a toasted crumpet.

Kate - I hope you slept better last night! I slept until just before 3, so still too early, but an improvement. I'm glad that medication has helped you with your sleep, and hope you won't have trouble sleeping when the Rx ends.
I'm glad your DGS enjoyed church more with the baptisms - does your church do infant or adult baptism? I'm glad he was able to have the rest of the day with his dad.
The meal your DH picked up for you sounded very good! Sometimes it's nice to just relax in front of the TV, but a football game is not always relaxing!

I went to the exercise class this morning. The last two Mondays had no class because of our election, and Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, I'll miss next Monday too because that's the day my friend will be taking me to the library book sale - it's the last day, and a whole bag of books is only $2. I have decided I will take my walker in hopes of not being knocked over by eager people.
It's finally sunny! It's been so cloudy lately, with rain on a lot of days.

I hope you're both having good days.

Mema – you’ll need to change your signature line to “back in Texas”. LOL

Glad you arrived safely and a day early. That last day must have been a long one.

It does sound like you arrived to some very nice weather and you’re slipping right into your “winter” schedule.

Leslie – I know you often have difficulty sleeping. I’m doing much better now than I used to. Probably in part b/c of the nerve pain medicine that I’m taking at night. I wonder how I’ll do when that prescription ends?

How did the pork chops and squash turn out. I do the same thing w/ spaghetti squash – pierce it and then microwave it a bit to be able to cut it in half.

DGS went to church w/ us when he spent the night. Since he refuses to join the other kids for the children’s program, he’s rather bored w/ it all. But yesterday we had two Baptisms and he was interested and asked a lot of questions. DH drove him home around 2 PM. Sunday is his day w/ his Dad so we didn’t want to take up that whole day.

Yesterday I was so exhausted from having very little sleep that I asked DH to pick up something for dinner. The local sub/pizza place has expanded their menu to include dinner plates so I got chicken kabobs w/ salad and broccoli. Very nice! I traded half my broccoli for some of DH’s fries. He wanted to watch the football game so I watched with him and we ate in front of the TV.

We're here.....................actually, we arrived last night (Sat.). When we are traveling, it's hard for my DH to "sleep in". He was up both Fri/Sat mornings at 5:30 am and we were on the road by 7:00 am. On Saturday, we were supposed to arrive in New Braunfels (just North of San Antonio) by 3:30 in the afternoon. Well, that was pretty early, so DH asked if we drove just 4 1/2 hours more, we would be in Alamo. I said it was OK. I don't usually like to sit in the car that long, but it worked out. We did get some things unloaded from the car, but then went to bed! I was pretty tired by then.

We skipped church this morning and finished unpacking. I also had to clean the pantry (wipe down the shelves) before putting the stuff back that we kept down here, plus the items we brought from up North. And then did some other cleaning.

We had a good day of driving and weather on Thursday and Friday; however in the late afternoon on Friday it started raining. It rained thru the night and the streets and cars were still wet in the morning, but it had stopped. When we left on Friday morning from Des Moines, Iowa, we had FROST all over our car! And there was a lot of frost on the grass and bushes.

Today here in TX, we had an absolutely beautiful day - it was breezy, 85 degrees and LOW humidity. So it was actually very nice. It's going to get a bit warmer over the next 2 days, but then cool off the rest of the week w/a possibility of rain. They like to forecast rain down here, but most of the time, we never get it. LOL

Tomorrow I'll do more cleaning and hopefully get to the grocery store. Tuesday morning, I'm going to Bible study at our church and then will have my AA meeting down here to go to in the afternoon.

Leslie - DH's back was better on Thursday and then with driving and sitting, that helped as well.
I used to do cleaning for several people when I was working PT at the newspaper in St. Paul, MN. I got to be very good friends with one of my clients as she was a realtor and so she worked from home most every day. It was nice.
I'm glad you like your 12 grain bread! I've bought that before myself and like it, too. I'll be stopping by the bread outlet store here and will pick up bread, hamburger and hot dog buns from there. Last year I also got English muffins there (a 6 pack) for .50 cents a package! Their bread is usually .99/loaf. And good brands and variety, too!
I'm glad you were able to exchange your pork chops - I prefer the bone-in chops and DH prefers the boneless. The boneless seem too dry for me.
I think red grapes tend to be sweeter than green grapes, but maybe that's just my taste buds! LOL

Kate - I'm glad you had a good day with your friend for picking out her Christmas tree! I love the smell of a fresh tree, but down here especially, I don't think I would be able to have it up very long before it started losing all it's needles. They sell cut trees down here, but I'm not sure how people keep them alive with the heat and all. They must have to water them a LOT!
I'm glad your DH came home so you could have the whole weekend together.
That is cute about the kids doing the laundry. Mine is a top loader and I do have to stretch a bit to get everything out of the bottom!
Wow, that is late for a child's birthday party! And sorry you didn't sleep well, then either. Did you have DGS for the whole day today so you could have some time with him?
I've done the same thing with bread if I've got English muffins to have for breakfast, then I put most of the loaf into the freezer and take out just what I'll need. I generally have some type of bread mainly for breakfast.

Happy Monday! Glad to be settled in again down here!

Kate - that's a shame that the party went so late, and then not being able to sleep! I'm sorry you can't nap. I got up before 2:30 this morning, and think I will need a nap this afternoon.

That's a great idea to use tongs to reach things! If I feel moved to do the laundry, I'll try to remember to take them along.

Keeping bread in the freezer is a good idea, but I don't think I have room in mine for a loaf of bread. I don't eat a lot of bread either.

I hope to cook a couple of the bone-in pork chops tonight, with an acorn squash - if I can get the squash cut in half. I'll put it in the microwave for a couple of minutes first to soften it.

I'm having a quiet day, and will be reading this afternoon of course!

Mema - I hope you're arriving safely at your destination today.

I hope you're both having good days.

The birthday party that my DGS was at ended late. We thought we’d be picking him up around 6:30 but it turned out to be 9 PM before we left. It was 10 before we were home and in bed. And then I couldn’t sleep. I know I was awake past 1AM and then awake again around 3:30. It’s going to be a very long day. I wish I was able to nap.

Leslie – because I’m not terrible tall, I use kitchen tongs to grab things on the top shelves in the kitchen. I guess those could be used for a washing machine, too, if necessary.

Glad the bread is good. I have a loaf now that has flax seeds in it and I’m enjoying that. It’s in the freezer and I take out just the slices I need b/c I don’t eat much bread.

Sorry about the mistakes in your groceries. I really can’t tell much difference in the taste of red and green grapes.

Mema – I think this is the last day of travel for you. Hope the trip has gone well.

Kate - I'm very glad your DH got home in time for dinner last night. I'm sure it's good for you both to be together again.

I'm glad you'll be picking up your DGS this evening. I'm sure you'll all be happy to see each other again.

Yes, my housekeeper is very flexible about doing things other than her usual routine. She has recently polished some brass items for me, some candlesticks and a wall hanging of a Chinese character that my brother gave me when I first moved into an apartment with my son in 1984 - it is apparently the symbol for 'prosperity'. She also mails things for me, since it's hard for me to get to the mailbox. I truly appreciate her!

I did get my deliveries yesterday, but there were two mistakes in my grocery order. They sent green grapes instead of the red grapes I had asked for, and they sent boneless pork chops instead of the ones with bones I had ordered. I will be exchanging the chops today.

The 12-grain bread they sent is very good! I don't know if it has sesame seeds in it though. I'm sorry you're allergic to them!

That's sweet about the kids helping with the laundry! I wish I had help to reach the bottom of the tub. That's another reason I'm so grateful for my housekeeper. She really is a huge help for me.

Have a wonderful time with your DGS!

Mema - thinking of you!

Leslie – I know you have a nice relationship w/ your housekeeper. It must be very nice for you to have her there regularly and that she’s flexible when you need something different done instead of the regular routine.

Hope all your deliveries came in good time. I have an allergy to sesame seeds so I avoid all those breads w/ multiple grains unless I can read the ingredients first. Hope your new one was tasty.

We have a front loading washing machine but I can see how a top loader would be hard for you. I had a friend once who was laid up w/ a broken leg that wouldn’t heal. Her two young children would do the laundry. One would climb up on top of the machine and pull out the clothes and hand them down to the other child who would put them into the dryer.

DH got home in good time yesterday around 6. We had dinner and an early night. Nice to have him back. Finally back into our regular schedule and nothing on the calendar for the rest of the year except for some school pick-ups and vacation days w/ DGS.

We will be driving about 20 minutes north of our town to pick up DGS at the birthday party this evening. The birthday girl was in his class for K, 1st and 2nd grades but they moved out of town.

Mema - hope the trip is going well.

Kate - My housekeeper has been coming here for over 10 years, so we have become good friends. I need her to do the laundry in the machine because I can't reach into the bottom of the tubs. I don't mind doing a bit of hand washing. I would also have a hard time getting the clothes to and from the laundry room - it's quite a hike down a long hall to get there. At least it's hard for me with my difficulties with walking.

I know you're really looking forward to having your DH home tonight, and I'm happy for you that he'll be there today rather than tomorrow. I'm glad you'll be able to enjoy the company of your DGS tomorrow too. I'm sure he'll be happy to see you too.

You're right that the lack of oxygen and poor circulation is a nasty combination. It's a toss-up as to which makes me stop first when I am trying to walk somewhere.

It's very cloudy here again, and we may get some rain. I think the temp is still in the 40's.

I've ordered a med refill and my groceries, so they will all be delivered this afternoon. I'm looking forward to trying a different kind of bread - it's 12-grain, but from a different bakery. The store no longer carries the brand I used to buy. They discontinue things just as I'm getting to enjoy them!

I hope you have a great day!

Mema - I'm thinking of you and hope your trip is going well!

Mema – safe travels!

Leslie – my housecleaners come every other week, too. But since it’s a cleaning company, I don’t always get the same people.

Hope all the tests give the doctor the information needed to find some good ways to alleviate the symptoms and help you move around more comfortably. Between the lack of circulation in your legs and the lack of oxygen, it sounds pretty miserable.

My DH will be arriving home this evening. It will be nice to have him here. And it’s nice to have the whole weekend. He often flies home on Saturday so we only get half a weekend.

Tomorrow evening we’ll be picking up DGS after a friend’s birthday party and keeping him overnight. It will be nice to have him here and catch up. We haven’t seen him since his second day of school.

Mema - I'll be thinking of you driving for the next few days. I hope there won't be much construction along the way.
I hope your DH's back is better.
Looking forward to hearing from you Sunday, or Monday!

Kate - I'm glad you will be seeing your DGS soon.
Since my housekeeper only comes every 2 weeks, I would need 4 weeks' worth of underwear! I really don't want to buy that much.
I'm glad the tree hunt went well, and your friend did find an acceptable tree.
I'm glad your DH will be home tomorrow night.

I had my CT scans this morning, of chest and abdomen so they could see the blood flow. I have an appointment with my doctor November 13th so we can review the results of all the tests I've been having. I'll have one more test, the walking test with and without oxygen, after I'll see my doctor, so I guess I'll need another appointment after that. I do hope I'll be able to get my flu shot on the 13th.

I hope you're having a good day.

Mema – have a safe trip. I hope your DH’s back is not too painful during the driving. Talk to you again when you’re in Texas!

Leslie – yes, I do understand that sometimes the small daily irritations can be as hard to bear than the bigger tragedies b/c there is that continual reminder of the change.

I checked the calendar and it’s the Saturday that we will pick up DGS for an overnight stay.

Hope your clean clothes last until next time your housekeeper comes. My DH used to travel long business trips so we bought him extra underclothes to last for 2 ½ weeks. He never runs out now.

The rain did stop in the morning and we had a lovely sunny afternoon for tree picking. My friend brings along a tape measure b/c she wants tree that’s 9 ½ feet tall and fairly slender. I’m not nearly as picky as she is so I saw lots of lovely trees that would have been just fine w/ me. But we did locate one that she thought would be OK and tagged it w/ red ribbons. She and her grandsons will come out in late November to cut it down for Christmas.

DH is having lots of meeting both with the standard organization and w/ his own company’s legal staff about the stuff he works on. I’m looking forward to having him home tomorrow night.

A quick check-in as I know I won't be able to tonight. DH woke up with a sore back, so I'm helping out more than usual. Also he's going to disconnect our internet today (usually we do it on the road because once we call, w/in minutes they shut us off even if we give them the next day as our cut off day emoticon ). So I knew I wouldn't be able to post tonight.

It is dry here, that is good. Well, off to packing and helping out!

I hope you both have a good few days! I'll be back on hopefully Sunday night!

Mema - I'm sure you are busy with all your final preparations for leaving there. I hope packing the car will go well today. I'm glad you'll miss the cold temp tomorrow night - as you said, you're getting out just in time!
I met one of the young women who live in Vienna at the Goodreads site, and we've been corresponding for a couple of years now. It was exciting to meet her and her friend.
I've just washed bras by hand so far, but will probably be washing undies soon too.
I'm very glad you were feeling better.
I hope you have a good rest before travelling tomorrow.

Kate - I know - my housekeeper and I were wondering how the young women could afford to do all that travelling for so long! And neither of them has work plans for when they do go back.
I know that in the great scheme of things, the window is a small issue, but since I'm almost housebound, it was my window to the world, with a beautiful view of the sky which is now all chopped up. At least the glass is clean! I know acceptance is the only choice, and I will get there more fully, but I guess it will be a gradual process.
I knew your DGS had chosen not to do the swim lessons, but I didn't realize you hadn't seen him for that long. The last Friday in October will be in a couple of days, so I'm sure you're looking forward to seeing him soon. I also hope he's dealing with the separation of his parents all right.
It's probably good that you slept a little later. It will be nice when your DH is home to bring you your morning coffee again.
I hope it won't be too soggy as you walk through the tree farm with your friend. We had quite a bit of rain here this morning too; now it's just grey.

I hope both of your days are going well!

Mema – hope all the packing up and shutting up continues to go smoothly.

My husband is a ‘super-user’ for a company called Arlo that makes security cameras. That means he gets all their new models to test and reports on their performance. He also is active on their user website, answering customer questions and helping w/ problems. Right now we have doorbells like the Ring as well as a couple of cameras covering each of the doors and the garage. One nice thing is that the back door and garage cameras light up so if we come home late, they turn on.

Leslie – I’m glad you had such a nice visit w/ your friends. That’s quite a long trip they’re taking. Pretty amazing that they can take that much time off from ordinary life to travel.

You’ve had so many much worse things to accept in your life but sometimes the little things like windows are just as hard to learn to accept.

My DGS decided not to take swim lessons this fall so we haven’t been picking him up on Saturdays in September or October. I haven’t seen him since he started school. It’s been weird not seeing him. I hope we’ll be able to get back into our Saturday mornings together again in November. We will have him here on the last Friday night/Saturday morning in October I think.

I guess I’m not quite back on Eastern time. I slept until past 7 this morning. I’m usually up before 6. Of course my DH usually brings me coffee around 6 so that does wake me if I’m still drowsing a bit.

It’s raining here this morning but should stop before lunch. I hope so b/c my friend who always picks out and tags a live Christmas tree wants me to come out w/ her and walk through the tree farm. I’m thinking I really need to put on my hiking boots for that.

Busy day today - putting more things away, sorting groceries on what to take and what to keep here and I had to go to the bank. I did 3 small loads of laundry and now I'm done with that. DH has to put anti-freeze into the washer to make sure it doesn't freeze up. Even though he drains all the water, sometimes a few drops of water or more can be sitting there and so he runs that thru the line. He does that with all the drains when he finally drains all the water from the entire house.

Tomorrow we'll pack the car (or at least 3/4 of it will get packed). Thankfully it's still looking like no rain for the next 2 days. I did check and on Thursday night (we won't be here) it's going down to 25 degrees! That's the coldest so far. I guess we're getting out of here just in time! LOL

Leslie - I did feel much, much better today.
I'm glad you had such a wonderful visit with your friends! How do you know these friends since they live in Vienna?
I'm sorry your housekeeper couldn't do your laundry today. Hopefully you won't have to wash too many of your things by hand.

Kate - I, too have been wondering about your DGS.... has he adjusted to his parents living apart now?
I'm sure with school, it's longer in between visits. Is he in any sports?
The medicine I take is a generic version of Excendrin Migraine, but cheaper with identical ingredients - acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine. I should know better with the acetaminophen and aspirin to eat something. But I was up in my bedroom and really didn't feel like going downstairs to get something to eat. Not a good excuse and I'll remember that next time!
Good to know that the back of the plane is the safest! Now I won't mind sitting back there! LOL I just hate the long wait of getting off the plane once I've reached my destination if I'm way in the back. I guess it's a good test of my patience (which is sometimes very short! LOL)
That is too bad about your mail! You must have - is it Ring for your doorbell? Our neighbors have that and so they can see their front door as well.

I'll try to post something tomorrow, but if you don't see anything, you'll know I was very busy and probably very tired!

Have a great day!

Mema - I'm sorry about your headache and upset stomach - I hope you're feeling better today.
That is very sad about your pastor's wife with ALS.
I'm glad you had your video call with DS and grandkids.
It's good that you finished with Nashville. I enjoyed it too. I watched all of the West Wing quite a while ago - I loved it!
I hope you get your clear weather for tomorrow and Thursday.
I understand about not being able to post for the few days you'll be travelling.
I'm glad you've had the big trees removed that could have fallen on the house!

Kate - I am getting to acceptance about the window gradually. This morning I needed my housekeeper to help me open one of the windows. It sure doesn't open much!
I'm glad you finally had such a good night's sleep!
I'm sure it is quiet without your DH there. It seems like you haven't mentioned your DGS for a while. Have you seen him lately?
I'm very sorry about the mail hold which was not put into effect!

My visitors were great! They have been travelling throughout the US and Canada since the end of March in a van they purchased and fixed up so they could camp in it. They don't know when they'll be going back to Vienna where they live now. I do have a photo of myself with Sophia, who is the one I've been corresponding with, but I couldn't get it posted here. They were here almost 3 hours! They showed me lots of photos, and we had a lot to talk about. It was lovely to meet them.
My housekeeper was here today but the laundry room was closed for maintenance, so she wasn't here as long as usual, and I didn't have the clean things to put away. I will have to wash out some of the things by hand.

I hope you're both having good days!

Mema – sorry about the headache and the upset stomach. I think some medications do dissolve better in your system if there is food there as well.

Glad the rain will stop for your final packing.

We were in the back of the plane going out to CA. DH says that’s the safest place on the plane. We only got to sit together on one of the flights, but since we were going to be together on vacation I didn’t mind. Coming home on Saturday the planes weren’t filled up so I got pretty good seats on both flights.

Leslie – hope you had a lovely time w/ your German friends.

It’s quiet around here w/o DH. Since we did the wash at the time share on Friday, I didn’t even have wash to do. Just hung up the things from the suitcase. Nice!

I don’t think I mentioned that our mail hold didn’t “take”. DH could see the mailman delivering mail every day so he sent a message on-line to the postal service. They kept on delivering mail so he called my DS to drive over and pick up the stuff that was overflowing our mail box. When I got home, there was a message on our answering machine from the post office saying they had received DH’s message about a problem w/ a mail hold. Sheesh! Someone sends you a message about a vacation mail hold and you call their home number and continue to deliver the mail??

Anyway, I made a trip to the local PO and they said delivery comes out of the regional office. I went over there and they brought out the delivery supervisor. He went back and checked all the records and then came out and got a few more facts and went back again. He even talked w/ the delivery guy on the phone w/ me listening in. They did have the vacation hold card. And they should have been holding the mail. The only slight excuse was that there was a change mid-week in the carrier – but that should not have effected the mail hold. So – a full apology and a promise to look into the events and see that something similar doesn’t happen again.

I did get some cleaning done today. But then about 1:00 I got a headache and mistakenly took my headache pills on an empty stomach and so I ended up with an upset stomach for the rest of the day. Also, my headache took a long time to go away, too. Maybe that was also the result of taking the medicine on an empty stomach. So, that was kind of a bummer. I'm still not feeling the best. I think I'll go to bed early and hopefully feel better by morning.

It rained almost all day today! And it came down pretty hard for a good part of the day. We don't have our rain gauge up anymore, so I don't know how much we actually received. Supposed to rain again tomorrow, not as much and then be clear for Wed/Thur so that will be wonderful for final packing and shut down!

Tomorrow I will go into town to the bank and then finish up the rest of my cleaning. And I don't know if I'll have a chance to post on Wednesday - DH has to pack my hard drive, (we each bring ours back and forth) so I'll just be left with my phone. We'll see how it goes and how busy we are. But once we are in TX, I'll be back posting again.

Leslie - how fun to have company from Germany! Are they staying in town long? I will be looking forward to hearing all about your visit!

Kate - I usually pick my seat at the time I make my reservation - but then I have to pay for it. I get the cheapest seat, which has been $9.00, but it puts me towards the back of the plane, which is not the best, but better than paying even more for a seat towards the front. I tell ya, they've got you comin' and goin' now with all the "add-ons". Thank goodness the basic fare's for me have not gone up drastically! I fly Sun Country and it's a non-stop flight - so 3 hours and I'm in the Twin Cities! Pretty slick!
I should have taken a picture of our yard yesterday and then today! Yesterday, all the leaves were nicely chopped and the yard almost looked bare, but by this morning, it was COVERED with leaves once again! Oh, well! At least he got some of them chopped up. We both had a bit of a chuckle over it when we saw it!
We have had to have a crane come in to take out a couple of large trees, too. It's fascinating watching it come down. The trees were dying and if they were to come down in a storm, they would have hit our house for sure.
Nice that you got such a good night's sleep and a lot of it!

Have a good day!

Just a brief note today - my young friends from Germany will be here this afternoon. I have been doing a lot of tidying and dusting, and will soon get cookies out and put a pot of water on the stove to boil for us to have tea.
I'm looking forward to the visit.
I'll tell you about it tomorrow.

Leslie – acceptance is such a hard habit to cultivate. I know I want to hold onto those things that upset me but I am beginning to learn that really accepting things relaxes parts of my body that hold onto tension when I’m angry or frustrated or sad. And that does make a difference in how I feel all day.

Mema – I’m a frequent restroom user so I like the aisle seats but I’ve been flying “basic economy” and they don’t let you choose your seats. You have to take what they give you which is usually the middle seat.

Sorry about the pastor's wife. It is hard to say good-bye knowing it might be a final one.

We used to have an oak tree and it kept it’s leaves almost until spring. They would make a mess coming down in snow storms. It was so big and so old and located right between our house and the neighbor’s house. After we had the big storm that took out 4 big maple trees, we didn’t want to risk having that oak falling on either house. They had to bring in a big crane and take it out in huge sections.

I only got about 5 hours of sleep the first night home b/c I was still on CA time and didn’t get to sleep until midnight. Last night, I went to bed at 8:30 and slept straight through until 6:20 this morning. Almost 10 hours of sleep and I feel marvelous! All ready to start the new week.

Church went well today - said good-bye to everyone; however, our Pastor's wife has ALS and is in a wheelchair now permanently - has very little movement now other than her fingers to move her chair and can lift her head. She can still speak, but very slowly. Anyway, I went to say good-bye to her and she started crying. Said she would miss me. Brought tears to my eyes as well. Probably because there's a good possibility, she won't make it until next spring. Very sad. But her attitude has been just incredible thru this horrible disease.

Came home and I did vacuum out the car we are taking to TX and then my car, too. It was so beautiful here today. I think it got up to 64 and was sunny! Now we're in for rain for the next 2 days. Tomorrow I will do my final cleaning.

Tonight, I had my video call with DS and the grand kids. It's so wonderful to have that technology now!

I think we are leaving at a good time, too. Pretty much all the color on the leaves is done. There are still leaves on some of the oak trees, but most all the maples and poplar trees are leaf less! We may see some good color as we make our way South. At least for a little bit of it.

Leslie - I finally finished Nashville - last night actually! And I know now what you meant about everyone coming out on stage at the end. That was really neat. I'm glad I'm done, though. Some of the story lines were not as good as in the beginning. But overall, I'm glad I watched it.
Now I can keep up with all my other TV shows that have started up for the fall. I'm going to take a look at a new comedy and see if it's any good. It's on Hulu called Perfect Harmony with Bradley Whitford. He was in The Handmaid's Tale that I watched recently and he used to be on the show West Wing - I never did watch that show. But it looks like it could be funny. They just don't seem to make good comedies like they used to.
I hope you had a good day of reading!

Kate - Oh, I'm sure you are glad to be home again! That was a long day for you. I've been on flights where I've had the row to myself, too. It's nice! I do like to sit by the window, but I always pick an aisle seat in case I need to get up. I don't like to have to crawl over people.
Yes, I think our basement does act like a root cellar. Especially since we turn off the heat in the rest of the house. The basement stays 'relatively' warm down there.
That section on Acceptance in the BB is such a good reminder - I read it every so often myself.

Hope you both have a great day!

Mema - You and your DH sound quite busy, getting prepared to leave for TX.
I hope you had a good last Sunday at the church in WI.

One more thing about this new window is that there is so much more wood, 6-inch bars going horizonatally between the windows, and a 6-inch vertical post between the horizontal windows and the vertical one. I wish I could post a photo. Anyway, with all the wood, it stays dim in here even on bright sunny days like today. I'll be needing to keep lamps on a lot more.
I'll shut up about the window. I know I need to accept it because it's definitely something I cannot change. At least the glass is clean!

Kate - welcome home! How great that you had a whole row to yourself on the long flight! I'm sorry it was such a long day though.

I'm having a quiet day today and will be doing lots of reading. I hope you're both having good days!

Home!

Had a good flight even w/ a bit of delay on the first takeoff, I arrived at the second gate halfway through the boarding time. I was just behind the “comfort plus” seats and had the whole row to myself on the long flight from LA. What with the time change and just missing the express bus, I didn’t get home until 10 PM. So nice to sleep in my own bed.

Mema – enjoy your last Sunday and your northern batch of friends. Nice to have a second set of friends to look forward to seeing soon.

Sounds like you use your basement floor like the old-fashioned root cellars. Ground temperature does remain pretty constant throughout the year if you go down far enough.

There was a lot of wind during the week here so I’ll need to go around the yard this afternoon and check on things. A lot of people closer to the coast lost power from downed trees.

I’ve actually heard of people having a balloon dilation of their esophagus. Don’t remember who or when. Glad it’s not serious enough that it needs to be treated right away and would delay your trip to Texas.

Leslie – so sorry that the new window is not as nice as the old one. That 6 inch bar at eye level sounds pretty bad. I hope you can grow accustomed to it quickly and accept it. As the AA Big Book says, “acceptance is the answer to all my problems”. My sponsor has me reading that section every morning.

I did laundry today and went around outside and picked up all the big sticks that have fallen in our yard. With the windy days we've had and all the trees in our yard, there were a lot! DH wants to take the riding lawnmower out one more time and mulch the leaves that have fallen so far. It will put us ahead in the spring!

Tomorrow will be our last Sunday at church up here. emoticon I'll miss the friends we have up here, but am looking forward to seeing the one's in TX. Then I'll be vacuuming out the car that we'll take to TX, plus I want to vacuum my car before DH puts it away for the winter. Supposed to be nice one more day. Then it looks like we'll have rain for 2 days and then 2 w/out which will be nice since those will be our last days. Also, when DH does the final shutdown - the pump for our septic tank is outside, so he has to spend a fair amount of time out there shutting it down. So it would be nice not to have it raining. Been there, done that before - not fun!

Leslie - Sorry you are still unhappy about your window. That really is too bad that it's so different than you old one.
I hope you got in a lot of reading today!

Kate - Hope you arrived safe and sound - as well as your DH at his new destination.
I didn't realize how far North Santa Cruz was from San Diego. But I'm sure flying there didn't take too long.
Did you get all your shopping done?
How fun that you actually ran into your friend's DD! Small world! I'm glad you had a nice evening visiting with your friends.
I'm sure it's nice to be back in your own bed, too!

Have a peaceful Sunday! (Seems weird to think that next week, I'll be doing this from TX!)

Mema - I'm glad you had a good visit with DH's son and family.
Thanks for telling us about MEA.
I'm glad there were no bees while you were clearing off the roof.
I'm glad your DH got through the tests all right. The restaurant you went to sounded good, with the exception of the deer heads!
I am sorry your DH has trouble swallowing. I have a hard time with specific things, like bread and hard boiled eggs. I haven't mentioned that to my doctor yet - we have enough other things to be figuring out now. I'm sorry your DH has trouble every day. I'm glad he'll be getting it checked again in 6 months.
I'm glad the things you take to the basement don't really freeze.
I think they put a 'frame' around the new window and I guess that's what they painted. I think the overall size is about the same.

Kate - thanks for the link to Road Scholar. It sounds quite fascinating, but I'm not sure what I could afford, or what I'd be able to do with my limited mobility.
Your time at Balboa Park sounded wonderful!
I hope your trip home goes well, as well as your DH's flight to Santa Cruz. I'm sure you'll be happy to have him home on Friday.
I'm glad you enjoyed the evening with your friend! Amazing that you did meet up with her DD while hiking.

I'm spending the day trying not to look at the living room window. I hope I will be able to calm down about it soon. I don't like wallowing in unhappiness.

I hope your days are going well.

I’m quickly posting before I make breakfast and put the last things into the suitcases. Our flights are at 10 AM. I’m flying home and DH is flying to Santa Cruz. That’s where his company headquarters is. There is going to be a standards meeting there that he is attending. He’ll be there most of the week and flying home Friday.

We got the laundry done yesterday morning and packed almost everything. Then we went back to Old Town to do some shopping for gifts for our kids and have lunch.

My friend invited us to come to her house for dinner. We spent the afternoon hiking at Torrey Pines reservation. She texted me that her DD was also hiking there and to look for a tall blond who was hiking alone. I didn’t think we’d see her w/ all the different trails there but we did meet her. It was lovely to spend the evening w/ them.

Oh, boy - a full day - 11:30 until 6:30 but that did include us eating dinner out. We went to a local family restaurant in town. Very good! We'll go back there again. And quite cozy - looked cabin-y inside. Deer heads mounted on the wall, the walls were all knotty pine.

Everything went fine for DH's appointment, but there are some concerns. He has trouble swallowing - sometimes it seems like the food doesn't go down right away. His neurologist said there might be some loss of muscle reflex in pushing the food down. But the doctor today said it could be another issue -

" Achalasia - a rare disorder that makes it difficult for food and liquid to pass into your stomach. Achalasia occurs when nerves in the tube connecting your mouth and stomach (esophagus) become damaged."

From the pictures what it looks like is that right at the bottom of the esophagus (before the stomach) the esophagus gets very narrow. It almost looks like it's swollen shut, but there is a tiny space yet. He wants DH to see a GI specialist up in Duluth when we get back from TX to see if that's exactly what it is or just esophagus spasm. If it's Achalasia, there is surgery that can be done. A balloon is placed into the hole and blown up to make the hole larger. A more extensive surgery is to make a cut into the esophagus to expand it. But he suggested the first option. The reason also that he suggested the surgery is because DH has some trouble with "something" that he eats every day. It might be a piece of toast that "gets stuck" or milk or a piece of chicken. It's not everything he eats, but it's something every day. The every day is the part that was of concern to the doctor. And this has been something that has happened over several years and has not really changed - yet.

Then he removed a very large "flat" polyp during the colonoscopy and actually put in 4 "pins" to close the skin over it. It will heal and those pins will loosen up by themselves and he will pass them w/out even realizing it. But with that, he wants him to come back in 6 months (so, basically when we get back from TX) and he will do another check of that area. In the meantime, he sends the tissue out to make sure there are no cancer cells.

So, there was some unexpected news, but basically it's not bad news. It's not super serious at this point, but concern to get it checked out further. I guess when he goes to see the doctor in Duluth, there is a test that they do - "Your doctor may use esophageal manometry to diagnose achalasia. This involves placing a tube in your esophagus while you swallow. The tube records the muscle activity and makes sure your esophagus is functioning properly."

Tomorrow will be back to shutting things down. I did bring a bunch of freezable items to the basement. Shampoo, lotion, etc. that I don't bring with me to TX. I did that yesterday. Then I will also put our canned goods on the basement floor as well. We cover all those items up and they stay fine. They never "freeze" either being on the floor of the basement. I've left bottles of water, too. So it works out well.

Leslie - I'm so sorry about your windows. I don't blame you for feeling sorry for yourself - it sounds more like disappointment (than feeling sorry for yourself) and that's perfectly understandable. That is too bad. I hope you get your furniture moved back and the painting done. Why do they have to do painting? Is the new window a different size than the old window?

Kate - All those gardens sound just lovely! And did you get your hike in, as well? I don't blame you for wanting to be outside - I'm sure you are having fantastic weather as compared to home. Today was nice (for the time that I was outside), but very windy. Tomorrow is supposed to be about the same minus the wind, so that will be wonderful.
Were you able to have dinner with your friend?
What time do you fly out for home? Is it a direct flight?

Enjoy your day!

Not much time to post today. I should be back tomorrow.
The new windows have been installed. I'm trying not to cry. The old window gave me a lovely view of the sky, but this window is all broken up into smaller windows, with wide bars between them, so the view is very limited. If I stand at the window, there is about a 6-inch bar at eye level, so I have to bend down to see out. On the left side are 3 rectangles from top to bottom - only the top two can be opened, and I can't reach the top one. I really wish we could have kept the old windows. emoticon I know I'm just feeling sorry for myself. I will get used to them eventually.
The guys are coming back to do the painting soon, and then I hope they'll move the furniture back for me.

Hope you're both having good days!

Leslie – they have a website for Road Scholar and each trip spells out pretty clearly what the physical demands are – how much walking, getting on buses, and things like that. There are all different levels.

www.roadscholar.org/

I'm not all that fond of reading on my iPad but I have found it convenient for traveling and my DH is able to down load books I can’t get at the library – like the entire Dorothy Sayers mystery series.

Nice to have a day when you don’t have to get up and go after all the busy times you’ve had. Hope the window installation goes quickly and all the furniture moving works out, too.

Mema – sounds like a nice day w/ some family time and then some of the chores accomplished. I remember meeting one of DS’s friends when he was in 8th grade who looked like a man he was so tall. Those teens start as little boys and then suddenly sprout into men seemingly overnight.

Hope all goes well w/ your DH’s procedures. The prep for that is certainly awful. A bunch of us were talking w/ one woman who was scheduled for her first one sometime this week after the retreat.

We spent yesterday at Balboa Park. We went through a lot of different gardens: rose garden, desert garden, palm canyon, formal Spanish courtyard garden, the (former) naturist grotto and the Japanese friendship garden. In between gardens we saw the museum of natural history and a lovely European art gallery. There were one or two others we thought we might visit but we were tired out by then. A person really could spend a week there seeing all the museums. Since we have a lot of museums in Boston, I opted for being outside most of the day enjoying nature.

Today, we’re doing some laundry this morning. DH is staying on for another week and needs clean clothes. Then we’ll head out to Torrey Pines State Reserve for some hiking. We’re planning to meet at my friend’s house for dinner if all goes well w/ her mom.

We had a wonderful visit with DH's son and family this morning. They stayed about and hour and a half - then made their way up to Duluth. Oh, and MEA stands for Minnesota Educator Academy - it's actually a conference that is held in MN every year at the end of the 3rd week of October and all the kids are off school W-Th-Fr that week. I should have explained that when I wrote it yesterday because it makes sense that neither one of you would know what that is! LOL

So, after the kids left, I did some burning of papers we had accumulated. I did rake off the roof of the shed. There were a lot of sticks and branches on it. And no bees!! emoticon

It was a nice day - sunny, very little wind, but the temperature never did reach 50 degrees, so it was still a bit chilly. Tomorrow it's supposed to get to 61. But tomorrow is my DH's endo and colonoscopy and we have to be there at 12:15, so that will take up a good chunk of the day. Thankfully, we only have to go to Spooner and that's only 1/2 hour away. In the past, we've gone up to Superior and that's an hour away. Spooner is the town I go thru every week for my meeting.

So, I didn't have to make any dinner tonight for DH - I just had some left overs. He starts drinking his "prep" now! Ugh! I wish they could come up with something other than that stuff.

Leslie - I hope all goes well for your new windows tomorrow. And I'm sure it will be nice to have it all over and done with.
Having a day that I don't "have" to get up and go somewhere right away is nice! Especially when it's getting chillier out and the sun doesn't come up as early either now. But I know you are up WAY before the sun! I'm sure it was nice that you didn't have to go out again.

Kate - When our oldest grandson and his dad were walking towards the house (they were a bit behind the rest of the family), I looked out and for a split second wondered - Who's that other guy with Charlie-DH's son? And it was the grandson Owen - he's just about as tall as his dad now - 6'2", so them walking side by side, it looked like two older adults! Plus Owen had a baseball hat on, so I couldn't see his face real clearly! My, how grand kids grow up so fast!
Your adventures yesterday again sounded very interesting! When my sister and her DH lived in Kentucky, there was a lot of history and things to see in that area. It was fun! I've never been to Washington, D.C., but would really like to go sometime.

Happy Friday!!

emoticon

Mema - that does sound like a good group for your last meeting there.
I'm glad you'll see DH's son and family briefly on their way to Duluth. I don't know what MEA is either, but I hope they all have a good time getting together with so much family.
I hope there won't be bees around the shed you need to be raking! That sounds terrible.
Your plans for your trip sound good. I agree that it's good to get to your destination before dark.

Kate - I would like to check out Road Scholar, especially if I could have my own room.
I don't have an iPad, or any e-books to read. I really don't like the idea of reading books that way. I'd like to take fewer clothes, and more books! My issue now would be my difficulty walking, but I hope there will be a solution for that problem. If I need to drag oxygen with me, that's another problem of course!
The history stuff you did yesterday sounded good. I'm sure you'll enjoy Balboa Park. I'll be interested to hear what you decide to do there.

After being out for the past two mornings, I was glad to be home this morning to catch up with all my online messages. I'm not looking forward to getting the windows tomorrow, but I'll be glad when it's finally done!

I hope you're both having good days!

Leslie – on Road Scholar trips a single person can be paired up w/ another to share a room or pay a bit extra to stay alone. Either way, there is lots of good company to talk with during the days.

I have a lot of e-books on my iPad so I can just open that up and read w/o turning on the light. I did that this morning b/c I woke up about an hour early.

Glad that your blood work looked good. I expect the extra iron for a few more weeks would be fine since your hemoglobin is still a bit low. But it’s good that your doctor will be going over the results since she knows your system and how well you can tolerate supplements.

Too bad you had to do so much waiting before and after your pulmonary test.

Mema – nice that it was a good big meeting for your last one.

Not sure what MEA stands for, but it’s nice that your DH’s son can drop by for a visit before you head south.

Hope you don’t find any bees while you are ‘tidying up’ outside.

Your travel plans sound good. I remember when I drove w/ DS out to Reno, we made the last day a short one so we could find his new apartment and get things unpacked in the day light. And make a grocery store trip!

Yesterday we did ‘history’ stuff. Toured Old Town and then drove further north to visit one of the early Spanish missions. All very interesting. Today we’ll be in the gardens and museums in Balboa Park. Like I said, we’re just across the interstate from the park so we can catch the free ride over there or drive and park. Not sure what we’ll do yet. It’s interesting to have so many museums all in one area. Reminds me a bit of Washington DC where many of the different Smithsonian museums are along the mall.

Had my last meeting today - there were 18 of us there, so a good meeting. I got to say good-bye to a lot of good friends.

After coming home, I put more stuff away - outside stuff - rakes, shovels, etc. for DH. It was chillier than I was expecting, though. Tomorrow is supposed to warm up more than today.

Tomorrow morning, DH's son and family are going to make a quick stop in to see us on their way up to Duluth for the long week-end. He and his 2 sisters and family all go up every year during MEA week-end. Their mom and her husband go as well. The husband has a sister who owns one of the nicer hotels/resorts up there. So it will be nice to see them one more time before we leave, too. This is the family that has the 2 older boys (Owen - 15, Cooper, 14), then Ireland who is 10, Finlee - she's 4 and Zachary is 2 1/2. It will just be and in-n-out, but nice to see them. We haven't seen them since Labor Day week-end.

In the afternoon, I will probably "rake" off the roof on one of our sheds. It's not a steep roof at all and there are a ton of branches that have fallen on it, since there are trees all around. DH would like them off for the winter. They can damage the roof once the snow comes......not sure how, but not for me to ask! LOL It's an easy job and one that DH cannot do. I just have to have him make sure there are no bee hives around! I did this one other time on the house and was attacked by several bees! NOT FUN!! emoticon

We have made a plan to leave here next Thursday - which will put us in Texas on Sunday. So we are definitely in shut down mode now. Our first stop will be Des Moines, IA, then just South of Oklahoma City, OK and the last day will be in New Braunfels, TX. That last stretch is just North of San Antonio and so it will only be about a 5 hour drive, putting us in Alamo with plenty of day left to unpack, get groceries, etc.

Leslie - I'm glad you got in for your pulmonary tests, but sorry you had to wait long to get in and then for the bus. With all your rain and coo temperature, I'm sure it would have been cold waiting outside.
So glad to hear that your blood work is good! emoticon That's a good idea about asking your doctor about your vitamins, maybe you could take one every other day - that might help the iron not to build up too much in your blood????

Kate - I remember you mentioning the Road Scholar before - that's a good idea!
Seeing the sea lions sounds like fun! Especially since you could get so close to them!
Several years back, my mom and dad and I took a short trip up to Corpus Christi and toured the USS Lexington ship! Talk about a huge ship, too! So I know what you mean. But so interesting to be able to see it - in person! I don't blame you for skipping the rest of the stops!

Have a good day!

Mema - it sounds like you're really getting things done in preparation for leaving next week.
I'm glad you talked with your DS, and great that you'll have a video call next week to see the kids!
I hope you enjoy your last meeting there today.
I'm glad you and your DH are discussing what needs to happen in the spring re: getting rid of stuff you no longer need.

Kate - thank you so much for the link to the article about the elephants from Toronto! I was happy to read about them. It's funny that northern CA would be much warmer when it's at the same latitude as Point Pelee, in southern ON, which juts into Lake Erie. But the habitat certainly sounds much better for them! I was sorry to read that one had died.
I agree that it's good to have someone other than one's spouse to do things with! Road Scholar sounds good. If single women go, are they paired up to share rooms? I wake up at about 3 AM these days, so that probably wouldn't go over well! When I was with my son, I just sat in my bed and read until he woke up, so it worked out fine because the light didn't wake him, but I know a lot of people would be awakened.
That cruise sounded wonderful! I would love to see the sea lions up close. I would also love to see the naval yard. I'm sure the Midway was quite something. I don't blame you for skipping the end of the tour after that!

We had a lot of heavy rain this morning, with a thunderstorm thrown in for good measure. I went out today to have my pulmonary function test. The test only took a few minutes, but I had to wait a long time to go in for it, and then I had to wait a while for the bus to pick me up afterward. It was too cool and damp to sit outside, although I tried for a few minutes... It's hard to watch for the bus from the lobby.
I've got my results from yesterday's blood work - everything is back WNL (within normal limits) except for my hemoglobin, but it's almost there, and much better than it was the previous time. Now I'm afraid to continue the vitamin pills with iron. I don't want to end up with too much. I need an appointment with my doctor soon so we can review all the results of the tests.

Now I'm ready to go and read. I hope you're both having good days!

Mema – glad you like the new shape of your hair cut but I can see from the picture you posted that the length will not be too much different, especially in front.

It’s nice to find friends to do things with other than your husband. Makes for a healthier relationship. I know my dad didn’t like to travel once he retired so my mom did a lot of traveling w/ Road Scholar (formerly ElderHostel). They are really a good way for single older women to travel. On the trip we did last month to Canada there were a lot of single women and even two single men.

Leslie – sorry you missed your sister’s call the first time but how nice that she called back and you got a good long chat. That was probably easier for you than chatting at night when you were tired.

That was a poor show to not get maid service in a hotel. Over the weekend, there was one day when our room had not been cleaned by 1 PM and I went to the front desk and asked them to send someone. They must have just missed it by accident b/c room are usually done up in the morning.

I looked on line – your elephants came to California, but not San Diego.

The harbor cruise was nice. We got to see lots of sea lions basking on a floating pier. We were able to get really close to them. Then on the other half of the cruise we saw lots of different Navy ships of all different sizes and configurations. After the cruise we stopped at the old fish market for lunch and then toured the Midway. They had an audio tour w/ stops along the way and Navy veterans posted in various places to chat with. Such a huge ship! We were there for well over 3 hours and skipped the last stops on the tour.

I put away a bunch of our planters today and other things for our "shut down". It rained off and on all day.

I also got a call from my DS tonight. It was good to hear from him. I will do a video call him next week before we leave so I can see Dakota and Ryan.

Tomorrow I will go to my meeting one last time up here. We may still be here next Wed., but we'll be so close to leaving that there will be too much that I need to help DH with.

Leslie - I do like my haircut! She really did a good job. It didn't seem like she took much off, but what she did cut made a big difference.
DH and I also talked this afternoon about next spring going thru stuff in the basement and make 2 piles - one pile to give away and one pile to throw away. We need more storage for the stuff we do want to keep, but the only way we'll get that is to get rid of stuff and he agreed.
I'm glad you had such a good conversation with your sister.

Kate - You're right about DH understanding the problem, the proof will be next spring! LOL We'll see how much he "understands" when it comes time to get rid of stuff! emoticon
Your cruise sounds wonderful! There are cruises up in Duluth on Lake Superior that I would like to go on sometime. Unfortunately, my DH can't go with me. He doesn't fly, either. He was diagnosed with agoraphobia years ago so he doesn't do any of those types of things. But I usually can find someone to go with.

Happy Wednesday!

Mema - I hope you enjoy doing your hair now that you've had the trim.
We had a lovely sunny morning here, but it was only about 35 when I went out to the lab for my repeat bloodwork. It did warm up quite well though, to about 50.
I'm glad you and DH have had a good talk. Maybe in the spring you could work together on a system to decide what needs to be kept, and where, and what can be parted with.
Thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes! My sister called, but after I was in bed for the night. She said she'd call back today. If she doesn't call in the next couple of hours, I'll try calling her.
I don't think the winters in Toronto are all that brutal. I'm pretty sure it's milder there than in Milwaukee, and I'm sure the elephants did have an inside area, but maybe that wasn't large enough or something. It's definitely milder in Toronto than it is up here.

Kate - I love the sound of the geriatric pachyderm program at the zoo there! That's wonderful. I wonder if the elephants from Toronto ended up there. I've heard about a sanctuary in Tennessee also for retired elephants.
That's really wonderful about the breeding of the condors. They are amazing looking birds, and I had heard about the precariousness of their population.
Not having maid service doesn't sound like a big deal. When my DS and I stayed in a Hyatt hotel in Toronto, we didn't have maid service either, and the room was over $200/night! We were supposed to have had maid service, although they only change the bed linens every 3 days, but no one came to our room. My DS finally hunted a maid down to get fresh towels, and coffee supplies. I thought that was a poor show.
I hope you love the cruise! I would love to see the naval yards. I almost became a Navy nurse in 1975. I would have gone in as a lieutenant. I passed all the tests, but in the end, they wanted to know my arrangements for child care, but I said I would need to know where I was going in order to arrange child care. They couldn't tell me that, so we were at an impasse - a Catch 22. Anyway, San Diego had been one of my 3 choices for a place to be stationed.

Now my sister has called. We must have talked for over half an hour. It was good to hear from her, and I was on speaker, so I could also talk to her DH a bit.

I hope your days are going well!

I think today we’re doing a harbor cruise. We’ll do double cruise to see both the “North Bay” and the “South Bay” so we’ll see the city and the naval yards as well as the harbor islands and the sea lions. We haven’t quite decided what to do in the afternoon.

Mema – my mom was such a thrifty person that she saved and re-used almost everything. But she wasn’t a clutter bug. I learned the thrift but not the clutter free so I feel guilty tossing stuff but I’m not good at doing the work to actually repurpose the stuff. Anyway – it’s nice that your DH understand there is a problem even if he has trouble dealing w/ it.

We leave here early Saturday morning. I’m flying home and DH is flying up the coast to a work meeting here in CA.

Leslie – that does sound like the same blizzard. Glad you were able to find friends to watch your kids. That was before mine were born. There had already been a big snow fall a week or so early, so our cars were buried in our drive way w/ snow up near the top of the windows. After the plows came through, the pile at the edge of the street was so deep that we actually cut an archway through it at the end of our sidewalk. Fortunately when the three day driving ban was over, enough had melted that we could clear out the end of the driveway w/o tunneling.

The San Diego zoo has a special elephant program. They take in all the old elephants from other areas and are caring for them and doing research on geriatric pachyderms. No breeding or babies for the elephants here. Some of the other animals, they do a lot of selective breeding and are having success w/ endangered animals like the California Condors. They have managed to breed and hatch 90 of them and released over half of those. When they started there were only about 20 wild condors left.

And yes, the time share company turns over each unit at the end of the week just like a hotel room but we don’t get daily maid service. They did come in while we were at the zoo and took out the trash which surprised me. In other time shares, the occupant has to take out the trash. It might be b/c this is a retrofit of an historic building and there aren’t readily available trash chutes.

I had a good shopping trip and I think I will like my haircut. She fixed it a little for me, but tomorrow I'll be able to do it myself. It doesn't look like I had much cut off but I knew that was going to be the case. I really needed it shaped up more than anything.

It was a beautiful day here, too! Sunny, no wind. I actually had to take off my jacket when I was in the car because the sun was so warm, it heated up my car. The temp was only in the 40's, but it felt nice.

When I got home, DH and I did talk. He figured that was what was bugging me. He is going to try to get some things cleaned up. The real work will be next spring.

Not sure what I have going on for tomorrow yet. Supposed to be raining most of the day.

Leslie - Happy Thanksgiving! (a day late) emoticon
Unfortunately, every room in the house has stuff that needs to be cleaned up and/or put away or thrown away or given away. So, that's the hard part, I can't avoid seeing it! LOL Probably the biggest obstacle for me is that he built this cabin 40+ years ago and I have only lived full-time up here since 2005 - so even though that's 15 years, there's 40+ years worth of his stuff here. So, I'm sure it's overwhelming for him, too but he's realizing that something has to be done. It's just going to be hard for him to part with things.
That's too bad about the elephants in your zoo. We have elephants in our zoo's here. I think they bring them inside during the winter. The zoo's have changed so much now that the animals are no longer just put in cages, but actually have habitat's inside and outside for them. I love to see the elephants, too!
Did you end up talking with your sister?
I'm glad you were having a lovely, quiet day!

Kate - You are exactly right about the snow - all the beauty w/out all the mess!
And I know what you mean about acceptance is the answer. That is true. The other good thing is he does realize it and he doesn't like it himself - it's just hard for him to actually take the time. And I told him I would help him, so it's not so daunting. He sees so many other "things" that he can do and so he focuses on those things first.
Your place looks very nice! And both of the places you were/are at have been close to things you liked.
I hope you had a grand time at the zoo!
And when do you fly back again? I've forgotten.

Have a lovely Tuesday!

emoticon

Mema - I'm glad you have now seen your snow, and I hope it will warm up before you have to leave.
I'm sorry about all you DH's 'stuff'! I have a hard time keeping my stuff organized because I need to sort through a lot that accumulated while I was drinking. I'm sure a lot, probably most, can be just discarded now, but I need to look through it in case there is anything important. Like your DH, it's in piles...
I hope you and he will be able to work through your place when you get back up there. Is it possible for him to keep all that in an area that is out of your sight? Maybe if you didn't have to look at it all the time it wouldn't be so frustrating.
I often used to have a Coke in the morning, but now I definitely want my coffee!

Kate- Oh, I hope you have a wonderful time at the zoo! I've always heard what a great zoo they have there. The highlight of a zoo trip for me is always seeing the elephants, but Toronto no longer has any in its zoo, so that takes away any incentive for me to go there. Some activists complained that the winters here were too harsh for the elephants so they were moved to another zoo, in California I think.
Your time share looks very nice! I'm sure you'll be comfortable there. Is there a cleaning service to come in when you leave?
That blizzard in '78 that you remember was probably the same one that hit Milwaukee late in January. When the snow was coming down so hard while I was at work, I was feeling quite smug because I had my Ford Bronco with 4-wheel drive in the parking lot. Unfortunately though, the darn car wouldn't start when I was ready to leave! AAA was totally swamped with calls, and I couldn't find anyone to give me a boost. My employer kindly paid me to work a double shift because not all the staff had made it in for the afternoon shift. Then I had to call the parents of my kids' friends (they had a boy and girl of about the same ages as my kids) to ask if my kids could spend the night with them since I was unable to get home. When the shift began the next morning, I finally got a boost and was able to drive home, and had to shovel my way in to the garage, and wade through thigh-deep snow to get to the door. I had a wonderful reunion with my kids!
Thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes! I am having a lovely quiet day, and will have my good dinner later. I plan to do lots of reading of course.
Lovely that your hotel was so close to the beach and restaurants.

I hope today goes very well for both of you!

Mema – snow in the air that doesn’t stick to the roads is the best of all. You get all the beauty and none of the mess. emoticon

All that “stuff”! Sorry your DH’s clutter is bugging you. Both my DH and I have that tendency which makes it worse. But you know “Acceptance is the Answer to all my Problems”. He’s not going to change even if there aren’t any emergencies.

I’ve known a number of people who use diet Coke instead of coffee for their caffeine fix. Just another addiction although a relatively harmless one.

Leslie – glad your windows are finally scheduled. Hope the weather doesn’t get too cold that day.

I was surprised how many big blizzard I’d been in when I checked the “top ten”. Many of them came after I stopped working and was able to just stay home and we took our time shoveling out. The only one I particularly remember is the one in ’78 which hit in the afternoon while I was at work. Fortunately my DH and I both were allowed to leave work early and got home safely. I chose to take the back roads and was glad I did b/c many of the highways ended up like parking lots w/ people stranded overnight. The governor closed the roads to all traffic except emergency vehicles for 3 days after that.

And Happy Thanksgiving.

My meeting was in La Jolla which is about as far north from San Diego as my home town is from Boston 20-30 minute drive. The hotel was nice b/c it was just a short walk from the beach and the street down to the beach was lined w/ little restaurants. But now we’ve moved into the city right next to Balboa Park where the zoo and a lot of museums are located – we're just across a major highway from the park. Here's where we're staying.

We’re headed to the zoo today. One of the women from my retreat asked if she could come w/ us since her flight isn’t until 9 tonight. She’ll meet us at the gate this morning.

This morning on our way to church we had the big fluffy snowflakes falling - it didn't stay on the ground, but it was covering one of our cars and the roof on our garage and then on some of the trees on our way to church. So, now I really feel like I got to see snow!

It's going to steadily warm up this week. I'm glad about that - I'm not really liking temps in the 30's. We did manage to get up to 40 today and had a little sunshine, too.

Tomorrow I'm off to Superior for shopping! I'm feeling a little down in the dumps. There's just so much stuff that needs to be done around here, but the biggest thing is that my DH just does not know how to throw ANYTHING away! And it's really starting to bother me. There is just "stuff" everywhere you look. He has little piles of stuff all over! The only reason I'm looking forward to going to TX is that house is not all cluttered up - YET! On a certain level he's trying to get things in order, but it's just not enough. Maybe next spring when we get back, we won't have any burials or services to do and hopefully no emergency - like we had with our septic tank, so we can work some more on things here. Sorry to vent.

Leslie - oh yea! You're finally going to get your new windows!! I hope it all goes smoothly for you!
Glad you have been getting in a lot of reading!

Kate - The only "blizzard" I was in, was in 1993, I think that was the year. It was over Halloween. That day we got 28" of snow and the next day we got another 18" or something like that. It was unbelievable. I think that is really the only one I've experienced. I've experienced more bone chilling temperature's than blizzards. It's been -40 for the temperature with a wind chill of -60! Now that is cold!! Last year, as a matter of fact, the Twin Cities had quite a few days of that cold weather. They cancelled school a lot!
I've never heard of butter fish either. I have heard of cioppino, but it does not sound good to me. But I'm not a huge seafood eater, either.
We'll leave here sometime next week or the beginning of the following week. DH says he's not in too big of a rush to get down there. I think because he'd like to get a few more things done here. If the temperature's stay half way decent, then we'll hang on for a bit yet. By the end of this week, we should have a more definite date.
I certainly understand your need for coffee - even though I am not a coffee drinker, there have been many a morning, I've had a diet coke! emoticon

Have a great day!

Mema - I'm glad you got to see some snow even though it did not accumulate.
My friend in Winnipeg is trying to do her shovelling. She pays for a snow removal service but they don't start until November 1st. It really is unusual to have so much snow so early!
I hope you'll like your hair after you get it cut tomorrow.
I'll try to get an appointment with my doctor for early November - she should have all the results by then.
I'm sorry Nashville is causing you such sadness.

I have been doing a lot of reading. I finished one book on Friday I think, and I should finish another one today.
Oh, I got notice on Friday that the guys will be here to do my windows next Friday finally. I'll have to ask our maintenance guy to help me move the furniture.

Kate - I'm sorry you've been in so many blizzards! Another bad one I was in was in Milwaukee at the end of January in 1978.
I've never heard of butterfish, but I like most fish. The only one I didn't care for was turbot. I've never had cioppino either, but it sounds interesting.
I'm sure I couldn't have watched that episode of Madam Secretary either!
I'm glad your DH got you checked in to your time share. I wouldn't like a kitchen without an oven, but I guess you're not planning on doing major cooking there.
I gather the time share is some distance from the hotel. Yes, you'll need coffee for the morning! Is there a coffee maker, or will you use the microwave to make instant coffee?
I hope you enjoy this day of the retreat.

I hope you are both having good days!

Leslie – I’ve been through blizzards w/ drifts taller than me, too. In fact I’ve been here for 7 out of the 10 worst blizzards in Boston history. Climate is definitely changing.

I think your butter tarts would be yummy. I love pecan pie. And yes, I did eat seafood while watching the sunset over the ocean. I had butterfish – that’s actually an Atlantic fish but I’ve never seen it on menus back home. And last night I had cioppino – Italian fish stew.

Hope your doctor gets all your results from all those test in a timely fashion so you two can sit down and discuss what needs to be done to help your circulation issues and fatigue.

Mema – you must be getting pretty close to your moving date. I don’t remember exactly when it was.

Hope your haircut goes well tomorrow. It can be awkward being in between styles.

I have found that some TV shows just hit home too closely and are hard to watch. I found that w/ Madam Secretary when they did the show on migrant children being separated from their parents. I couldn’t watch it.

Yesterday was more meetings all day starting w/ breakfast. I did have lunch w/ my DH and then dinner out with about a dozen of the ladies. My DH took a walk on the beach and did some research on some of the places we want to see during the week. He went over and checked us into the time share since it officially started Saturday. He took some photos of the kitchen since I asked him to see what was available. It’s a “mini kitchen” but the only thing it’s lacking is an oven. It looks bigger than the kitchen in our first apartment. LOL

Today the retreat starts later – 10 AM – and goes straight through until 4 or 5 PM. We’ll have to check out of here this morning and they’ll store our suitcases during the day. DH decided he might as well hang out around here instead of driving there and back. We might even have dinner around here since there are so many restaurants. We’ll need to stop at a grocery store on the way over to the time share to pick up food for breakfast. And COFFEE! Can’t do w/o that although I think I saw a little pack of it on the counter like the ones they give you in hotels.

Well, it did snow a lot during the day today, but nothing accumulated. Most of the time it was so light you almost had to squint to see the flakes. It's going to continue for another hour or so and then stop. After that, the temps warm up too much for it to snow. So, I may not really see anything significant this year before we head out. emoticon
I did do some cleaning today, but not much else. It was cold and windy and I'm glad I was inside all day.
Tomorrow for church, it's going to be a cold morning! Then on Monday, I'm going to go to Superior for some shopping and get my hair cut. Hopefully, the gal can try to get my hair going into the new style.

Leslie - Wow - I can't imagine so much snow that you can't get your door open, but I have seen pictures like that.
I absolutely LOVE pecan pie, so I'm sure I would love the butter tarts! I have my mom's recipe for pecan pie and I make that every year for Thanksgiving.
Well, even though you'll have to wait a bit until all your tests are completed, it will be nice to get all the results at one appointment.
Did you get in a lot of reading?
I'm having kind of a hard time with Nashville - I've gotten past the part of Rayna dying and so now much of it is so hard for her husband, Deacon and her girls - I'm sobbing thru a lot of episodes! I don't really know why it's hitting me so hard, but it is. Maybe because I can't imagine my time w/out my DH - and since he's 12 years older than me, it seems likely that he'll go before I do - so it's been tough watching this part of the show.

Kate - your dinner with your DH sounds lovely!
And how nice that he will get all of your things moved over to your time share while you are in your meetings.
Any decisions on what you will do next week?

Happy Sunday!

Mema - it really is cold there! I'm not ready for it to be that cold here.
I'm glad you got your ironing done, and figured out what to wear while your travelling.
Yes, I've heard about the snow in Fargo, and my friend in Winnipeg has had so much snow, she can't open her door! I lived in Fargo for the blizzard of '66 - the drifts were taller than I was! There was so much snow, even the trains stopped running for a couple of days.
Butter tarts taste a lot like pecan pie, and some are made with pecans, or raisins, or some are plain. They're very rich!
My doctor will get the results of my bone density test in a week or two. I will schedule another appointment with her to discuss the results of all the tests, but I still need to go for my pulmonary function test on the 16th, and the CT/angiogram on the 24th, so I'd like to get all the results after that. We'll also need to discuss my blood tests which did not have good results.
We have a cooler day today, with temps at about 50, but not as cold as you have! It's also very cloudy.

Kate - I hope you won't miss all the fall colours at home!
I'm glad that pillow works for you. If I try to sleep on my back, I snore/snort loudly and wake myself up.
I do hope I'll talk to my DS this weekend, even though it's not a holiday there. When we talk, it's usually on weekends.
It sounds like you're having a wonderful time. Did you have seafood while the sun was setting? I'm glad your DH can take care of the checking in and out while you're still busy. Is your time share an apartment?
I'm sure you're enjoying your meetings.

I'm having a quiet day today and hope to do a lot of reading.

I hope your days are going well!

Mema – that does sound chilly. Good day to work inside. My friend in ND says they have a “don’t drive” order in effect.

I was thinking I might miss most of the fall colors being away for 10 days. Ah, well.

Leslie – it’s always hard when the snow hits before the leaves fall b/c it brings down tree limbs on to power lines.

Yes, I sleep on my back so the neck pillow supports under my neck and hollows out under my head.

Glad your sister will call on Thanksgiving. Will your DS call even though it’s not our Thanksgiving?

Butter tarts sound delicious.

I had great meetings yesterday. Breakfast and lunch w/ my lady friends and then walked down to the beach w/ my DH and ate while we watched the sun set. There was a lot of low fog over the water so the sunset wasn’t much to see but the food was good. Today I’ll be in meetings again all day and go out to dinner w/ the ‘girls’. DH will drive over to our time share to get us checked in even though we’re not staying there tonight. He’ll have to move over there tomorrow morning when it’s check out time here.

Brrrrrr.......it's 34 degrees right now, but with the wind, it feels like 24 degrees! Yikes - that's a little bit on the chilly side.
I did my ironing today - and did some work on my lists for TX. Figured out what I'll wear while we're on the road for 3 1/2 days. I try to figure out things I can just wear back and forth, but we hadn't been leaving when it was real cold, so I haven't had to figure out any warm clothes to bring with me.
And then I helped DH move a small box trailer onto some wood planks for the winter. It's stored outside, so he doesn't want the tires sitting on the ground all winter. It's not real heavy, he just couldn't push it by himself. I think it's like 4'x8' or around that size.
It sure feels like we could get snow here, but it may end up missing us. I guess Fargo, ND is getting pretty slammed. That's where my niece and her husband live. Sounds like they could get "feet" instead of just "inches"!
Tomorrow I'll do some cleaning.

Leslie - Our trees still have a lot of leaves, but it's been pretty windy the last few days, so they may lose a lot of them.
I have never heard of butter tarts, but they sound delicious! How nice they were having a bake sale there. When will you get the results of your bone density test?
I'm glad you were having such a nice day - but I'm afraid you may be in for some cold weather if this continues to move East!
Your holiday meal sounds delicious! I hope you have a nice chat with your sister.

Kate - How was your retreat today?
Yes, that storm that is going thru ND will come our way, but it may end up just being the cold, cold weather. We may see some flakes on Sat/Sun, but we won't be getting any accumulation - at least that is what they are saying right now. That could change, though.
I'm glad you are having nice weather.
Did your DH decide on what things you will do next week?

Have a great day!

Mema - I'm glad you got your burning done before it rained. I think we're supposed to get that weather tomorrow. It's beautiful today!
I understand your desire to see snow, but I hope we won't get any soon because the trees still have most of their leaves.
I never did go to a women's meeting here - I can see how it might not be a pleasant experience. I have enjoyed the mixed meetings I've gone to.
The first time I heard about fascinators was when I watched the wedding of Prince William and Kate. A lot of the guests were wearing them. Many of them just looked bizarre, but I was sure they must not all be like that. I'm glad you looked them up.
I've heard of My Pillows, and have read both good and bad things. I'm glad you love yours!

Kate - Your weather sounds like it will be perfect while you're there.
If you have a 'neck' pillow, does that mean you sleep on your back? I have to sleep on my side. I could have used one for travelling though!
No I won't be doing anything special for the holiday. Although the holiday is Monday, most people have their big meal on Sunday. I'll have a chicken breast, baked yam, and steamed broccoli. I'll just eat half of everything, and have the leftovers Monday.
My sister said she'd call on the holiday, so I'll look forward to that.
Our weather is supposed to be cool and wet all weekend.

I went to the hospital this morning for my bone density, so another appointment done! They were having a bake sale in the lobby when I was leaving, so I got 6 butter tarts for a treat. They're very good, but VERY filling! I've eaten 2 of them and don't think I'll need another thing until dinner time.

I hope you're both having good days!

We arrived safely in San Diego, picked up the car and drove to the hotel. The weather is supposed to be quite warm today – 79 – but then cool back off to the low 70’s for the rest of our time here. I’ll be at my retreat all day long so DH will be on his own. He’ll probably work and do some other computer stuff. I hope he can also go through my list of things to do next week and decide what looks good. Perhaps buy some tickets?

Mema – convenient to have the rain start after your burning. I heard there’s a big storm hitting North Dakota. Will that come your way?

My pillow is a memory foam “neck” pillow and I love it. After using that I have a hard time sleeping on a regular pillow.

Leslie – will you do anything for your Thanksgiving? Does your apartment building do a special dinner?

This weekend is a long one for us, too. Monday is the Columbus Day holiday. Today and Saturday are supposed to be windy and rainy at home but the forecast was for nice fall weather for Sunday and Monday.

I went out to the fire pit this morning - it was a bit on the windy side, but the wind died down enough so I could burn. And when I was just finishing up, it started to rain! So that was good timing! Then I did laundry. It was an on and off again rainy day, but not too terribly cold. It will be in the low 50's tonight, but then the temps will drop into the 40's during the day. I'm hoping we'll see some snow flakes this weekend sometime! I know that's probably not what you all would like to hear or see, but since we'll be leaving soon, I'd like to see the snow! emoticon

Not even sure what is on the agenda for tomorrow yet. But I'm sure something will come up.

Leslie - All the meetings I go to are mixed. When I first started going to AA, I found a women's group (in TX) and thought it would be great! It turned out to be more of a b*tch session than group sharing. And I've heard others say the same thing down there. And at my meeting on Wed., a gal just shared the same sentiment about a women's meeting up in this area. I also find I learn a TON from men as well as the women. So I prefer mixed meetings myself.
Oh, I knew it was your library volunteer that stopped by - I guess I just used the wrong choice of words. emoticon

Kate - I hope you are having a great time and are having great weather! San Diego has the most moderate temperatures all year long - at least that is what I've heard.
I had not heard the term "fascinators" so I had to google it! That might be the way to go! And I'm sure you could find something "tame" out there! The one's I saw were all over the spectrum from outrageous to understated and lovely.
You've mentioned before about traveling with your pillow - do you have a specific kind? About a year ago I bought 2 of the My Pillows and I LOVE them. I have one up here and one in TX. Even if I go to see my DS during the summer and am going to be staying just a few nights, I usually bring it with me. Unfortunately, I can't bring it when we're on the road, since I have one at each place, but I do love those pillows.

Happy Friday!

Mema - I'm glad your meeting was good and you got your errands done. Great that you had a new person. Is your group all women, or is it a mixed group?
We're having a good day today, and I think it's supposed to be nice tomorrow too, but Saturday it's supposed to be raining with a high temp of 50. It doesn't sound like we'll have a very pleasant Thanksgiving weekend, weather-wise at least. I hope you're able to do your burning before the rain starts.
I really don't have people dropping in here at all. My volunteer had told me in an email that she expected to be here Tuesday, but I got that email on Sunday and had forgotten it by Tuesday!

Kate - I hope all is going well with your trip.
The name Thomas Keating was bugging me, and finally I thought I have a book of his, and I do. It's called Open Mind, Open Heart and was published in 1992. At that time he was in a monastery in Colorado. I had also Googled him, and learned that he had died.
I don't like anything tight around my head either. And I know what you mean about fascinators being 'over the top' - I would also have to find a 'tame' one if I were going to wear one!
I hope you have a wonderful time in San Diego!

I hope you're both having good days!

Mema – that’s a good size meeting. Glad you had a newcomer, too. Hope she keeps coming back.

I am able to wear something like a ribbon that goes round my head but not a plastic type head band. I have a big head and they all feel too tight. I can’t stand the “squeezing” feeling that kind of thing.

Leslie – sorry it will take you so long to get to the doctor for your blood check up but I’m glad they’re on top of it. It does sound like things aren’t very good if you are having so much fatigue.

Nice that you have 5 new books to read over the holiday.

I’ll have to look at fascinators. The ones I see photos of are way over the top, but I’m sure there must be more attractive ones.

Thomas Keating was one of the founders of the modern contemplative prayer movement. He lived in an abbey in Massachusetts but died just about a year ago. There is a center for contemplative prayer out in Albuquerque.

Up and posting before I close down my computer and head off to sunny San Diego. We’re expecting wind and rain for the next three days so I’m glad to be leaving it behind. I’ve been at that hotel before and expect to be posting as usual but will be a few hours later b/c of the time zone change. Everything is packed except my pillow. Can’t travel w/o that! LOL

I ran my errands today before and after my meeting. The meeting was good - 17 of us there! We had a new gal (not new to AA - just our club), but she was struggling. A lot of good shares and she'll be coming back, too. So that was good.

It was another gorgeous day, although a bit on the windy side again. Tomorrow will not be as nice and we're going to get some rain. I'm hoping I can get the sticks in our fire pit burned tomorrow before the rain comes, otherwise it will end up being a big wet mess.

Tomorrow I'll also do laundry. Yea! LOL

Leslie - I forgot that your housekeeper was there yesterday and I know she wears you out.
Sorry about the blood work levels being low. I hope all the things you are going to do will help.
Glad you got your new books to read. And isn't that the way it goes - you get all "comfortable" and then someone shows up! LOL We don't get many visitors up here, but in TX that could happen more often. So, unless I'm really sick, I always get dressed and put my make-up on!

Kate - That's a good idea about getting something light weight for your hair - have you ever used head bands? They have some very pretty ones out there that are decorative???? Just a thought. From your picture, it looks like something you could wear nicely and still "look like yourself".
Thanks for the tip on the book. I did look it up on Amazon - and yes, Leslie he is a priest. I've got another book that I'm waiting to order as it won't ship out for a couple of weeks and that will be right during our trek to TX, so I'll order it once we're down there. I may get the one you recommended as well.
Have a safe trip!

Enjoy your day!

Sorry for not posting yesterday, but as Kate could see on the goodies thread, my housekeeper was here, and I was pooped by the time she left.
My doctor's office called yesterday. I guess my doctor doesn't like my hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red cell count all being low. She wants the bloodwork repeated, and also to check B12. I was unable to get the bus to the lab today, and tomorrow I'll be ordering my meds and groceries, so I need to be here, and Friday I'll be going for the bone density. Monday is our Thanksgiving holiday, so I've arranged for the bus to take me to the lab on Tuesday. In the meantime, I'm taking a spoonful of molasses now and then, and trying to eat more eggs, and when I order groceries tomorrow, I'll be getting spinach and prunes... And when I order a bottle of vitamins tomorrow, I won't get the one for 'women over 50' which contains less iron. I hope those changes will be sufficient - I'd rather not have to take iron pills if I don't really need them.
I thought I was prepared to go to the exercise class today, but just when it was time to get dressed, I was overcome by fatigue, and didn't go. I didn't even get dressed today. I'm not expecting anyone. That sort of backfired on me yesterday - I was dressed but late in the afternoon my bra was bugging me, so I undid it, and of course that's when my library volunteer called to say she was on the way over! I had forgotten she said she'd be here Tuesday. She brought me 5 books - it's like Christmas when she comes! There are 2 others I'll have to wait for: one's on hold, and the other is an inter-library loan, which we are able to get again, but they can take a while to get here. I don't mind - I still have 3 of my own books to finish, and the 5 new library books too!

Mema - I'm glad you had a nice day on Monday and were able to wash some windows. We've been having beautiful weather here too. It's sunny and in the low to mid-60's during the days, but going down to low to mid-30's at night.
How great that you went to the pizza place. If I have a big lunch, I usually can't eat dinner at all.
It was very good to hear from my sister, after about 2 1/2 months! We rarely email. I have sent her messages on Facebook, but she usually doesn't answer unless I've asked a specific question. I'm glad you and your sister keep in touch better!

Kate - I'm not good at the hinting either. If I'm hungry or cold, I say so, so if someone else is hinting, I'm apt to not get it!
Wearing a hat is a good idea in the cold. Fortunately, now that our heat is on, it stays nice and warm in here.
I'm glad that the scraping and cupping did help after all. I hope you will continue to have improvement. I wouldn't be good at doing exercises 3 times/day! Twice I could do, but remembering 3 times seems a lot.
I hope your hair turned out the way you expected, and you enjoy the mani/pedi today. I know what you mean about barrettes not staying in your fine hair. Mine is also fine, but even though it's quite thick and has a bit of curl (at least on 1 side), I couldn't keep things in my hair either. I bought those nice combs once when I had long hair, but they just fell out. Now I keep my hair pretty short. Maybe you could wear one of those fancy hats (fascinators) to the wedding!
Too bad your DS can't pick you up this time, but it's good you have an alternative.
I have been getting up between 3 and 4 AM. I just wake up then and feel ready to be up. I go to bed early too though.
That book sounds interesting. The name Thomas Keating sounds familiar - is he a priest? If he's who I'm thinking of, he's in the Southwest desert somewhere. Or was...

I hope you're both having good days.

Mema – we’re in one of those wet and windy stretches of weather – until Sunday. It’s nice to know we’re leaving it behind.

Hope you have a good meeting today. I have one, too.

Leslie – house all cleaned? Hope you had a nice time w/ your housekeeper.

You were up early today from your post on the goodies thread. Have a good exercise class.

Got my hair done and took some time to talk w/ her about what I could do for the wedding next year. It's not long enough for an up do and I always wear my hair pretty much the same way. She suggested just putting a bit of a wave or something for some extra body and wearing a pretty hair ornament - so I would still look like myself only fancier. I will start looking for an very light weight clip since my hair is so fine and straight that barrettes just slide right down.

We’re taking the 9 or 9:30 bus to the airport tomorrow so I’ll have time to post in the morning before I pack up my lap top.

Oh, you ladies might be interested in a book I’m reading w/ my sponsor. It’s called “Divine Therapy and Addiction: Centering Prayer and the Twelve Steps” by Thomas Keating. It relates the lessons of the 12 Steps to our spiritual journey.

We got our errands done today and then went for the pizza buffet. Oh, it was sooo good! It was another nice day today, but quite windy. I was going to burn all the sticks that I picked up in the yard the other day, but it was much too windy to be burning. And tomorrow looks windy as well. Maybe on Thursday, but we're in for more rain - maybe before it starts! emoticon

Then I just relaxed after we came home. I didn't have to make any kind of supper - we both decided we would be on our own. Neither one of us was all that hungry. I did make some cupcakes this evening. Chocolate with a dusting of powdered sugar on top. I will freeze a bunch of them so I can just pull out a few at a time.

Kate - I know what you mean about my DH asking me about the heat. We joke about it a bit because when we were first dating and on our way up to the cabin, I would ask him if he was hungry - mainly because I was hungry so I'm sure that's what he's doing with the heat! LOL
I hope you will see improvement again this week following your session with the PT doctor.

Leslie - I hope you had a good day - maybe just tired out from all your appointments????

Tomorrow I have my meeting and I'll probably stop at my usual stores in town.

Have a great day!

Mema – before my DH put so many of the books onto our computer system so I can read them on my iPad, we were at the library every week.

Going out for pizza sounds lovely.

Sounds like your DH is asking you if it’s OK for him to raise the heat when he asks if YOU need it warmer. I am trying to learn to listen to that kind of hinting but I’m not good at it.

Leslie – I liked the way you described organ music as if it was internal as well as external. I know what you mean.

I find that when I do get cold, if I put on a hat it makes a real difference. Before we had the heating redone, some rooms remained really chilly and I would wear a hat when I was sitting in those rooms.

How nice that your sister has gotten over her “mad” and reached out to you.

Sorry your bus was delayed by construction. We had one woman arrive at an OA meeting just in time for the closing Serenity prayer b/c her ride got delayed.

Had my follow up w/ the PT doctor. Told her that last time she did the “scraping” and “cupping” that it made it worse for about 36 hours and then improved. So she did it again. And scheduled me for 3 more sessions. The hope is that each time will make more improvement. Meanwhile I’m to keep doing my exercises 3/day.

Today I get my hair cut and foiled. Tomorrow is mani/pedi and electrolysis for the stray chin hairs. And I need to get some laundry done, clothes picked out and packed. I asked DS about a pick up at the airport when I get home next Saturday night but they’ll be at a wedding. So we’ll park at the express bus and I’ll come back the same way.

It was a pretty nice day today and I did get outside - washed some windows and did a few other things. Tomorrow is supposed to be nice as well. DH has to go into Spooner to pick up his (deceased) father's taxes and we're going to go to the pizza place in town. Yum!

Leslie - The pipe organ at the church where I grew up was loud and even though it was up in the balcony, the music was all around us! That's what I remembered, too. Now it could be that this guy just doesn't play loud - he plays extremely well and can do so much on the organ. So, who knows.
Sorry you had to wait so long for your bus to pick you up. Construction can really do a number on traffic.
I'm glad you and your sister were able to connect. Nice that she will call you again. Very rarely do I "talk" with my sister, but we email every week or two.

Kate - I haven't had a library card in so many years that I don't even know if any of our libraries up here or in TX charge late fees. The only time I really go into the library in TX is to vote. That is where our polling place is located.
Nice that your DH's company is paying for his ticket home since he won't be using the one you purchased. Have you found out how you will be getting home?
Our house up here right now is set between 64 and 66 with an occasional 68 if it's real chilly. Actually, that gets too warm for me. I can live with the 64. But I think my DH is the one who is actually getting colder. He's the one who sets the temperature - and he will ask me if I need it up warmer - generally I tell him no! But I'm afraid 58 would be too cold for me.

Have a great day!

Mema - I'm so glad you enjoyed the organ concert. I'm surprised it wasn't very loud. Whenever I've heard a pipe organ, the sound has really filled the church! The sound ends up feeling as if it's internal as well as external! How great that your DH would like to go next year if there's another concert.
It's been sunny here this morning but it's starting to get cloudy now, and there may be rain later. Temps in the 60's sound good for getting outside work done.
I'm glad that dinner was so good.
It's funny that I didn't remember that 'Will' was on Grey's last year. I read that and was surprised. I am really enjoying season 15 of Grey's Anatomy.
I agree about the changing leaves being a gift to us!

Kate - our leaves are usually at their peak on our Thanksgiving weekend, and that holiday is late this year, but so are the leaves!
I never have paid fines on books because I've always been careful not to be late.
It's too bad your DH's ticket is non-refundable, but it's good his company will pay for the new ticket for him.
I never minded the cold when I was younger, but now that my circulation is bad, I really suffer if it's cold in here, especially if I'm not being active - trying to sit and read can be an ordeal if it's chilly. My nose becomes like an ice cube!

I was out this morning to go to the bank, and I had to wait a long time for the bus to pick me up afterward. We have bridge construction going on which is really fouling up the traffic. That bridge will be out for at least 15 months, so we just need to get used to this.
Not long after I walked in my door, my sister called because she needed some info to update our family tree. It was good to hear from her. It's the first time we've actually spoken since all the upset surrounding her wedding. She said she'll call again on Thanksgiving, which is next Monday.

I hope you're both having good days!

Leslie – nice that you’re getting some colorful trees to enjoy since you have to be out and about every day.

Nice that your library volunteer will be back on Tuesday to exchange your books. Our library did away w/ fines on books a number of years ago. They will call you if you have an overdue book that someone else wants.

My DH has a work meeting in San Jose, CA starting Monday. It didn’t make sense for him to fly home w/ me on Saturday and fly back on Sunday. We already had our (non-refundable) round trip tickets before the work thing came up so he’ll simply be a “no-show” on the Saturday flight and his company will pay for his real flight home the following Friday.

LOL on vacuuming the walls w/ and upright vacuum! I have a feather duster, too. It’s ostrich feathers and quite attractive.

Mema – glad the concert was so good and you enjoyed it. And then came home to a lovely dinner.

Love that thought that the trees are giving us a goodbye gift before leaving.

I’m not greatly bothered by cold and usually have the house temps between 60 and 66 degrees. But I had a friend coming over for Bible Study on Saturday and didn’t want her to be sitting there in a 58 degree house.

The concert was wonderful! The man is a Master Organist and it showed! If there was one thing that I would have liked is that I wished he would have played louder. He did at times, but not as much as I would have liked. When he did play loud, it just filled the whole auditorium! It's such a rich sound! But it was still very good and I'm very glad I went. After I told my DH about it when I got home, he told me he would like to go next year if they put on another concert! Wow! That surprised me! (pleasantly)

It was a pretty nice day here - sunny most of the day. But when I got out of the concert it was cloudy and then we got some rain about 7 pm. And it seems like it's been on and off now for a couple of hours. But the next 3 days are supposed to be dry. It's going to be in the 60's those next days, so I'm going to try and do some things outside.

Leslie - My dinner was very good! DH did a wonderful job.
Sorry your movie wasn't good. I did know (Will) from Nashville was on Grey's. He started last season, I believe or maybe it's been 2 seasons. I don't remember.
Nice that your library will give you the extra day or two to return your books.
I'm glad you had a nice relaxing day (staying in your pj's!) emoticon I think the only time I do that is if I'm sick. But maybe because I'm not here by myself.
I just love seeing all the beautiful colors of the trees this time of year. I was thinking how cool it is that they display their beautiful colors before they shed their leaves. It's like a gift to us before the cold, stark winter comes.

Kate - We've had to have our heat on now for a couple of weeks, I think. It's been chilly overnight and with so many more cloudy, rainy days - no sun to heat up the house.
I hope all your appointments go well for you this week. And nice that you will have a bit of time on Thursday before you leave, so you can make sure you have everything. I hope your DS is available for you again. That would be awfully handy!

Happy Monday!

Mema - your cleaning sounded quite ambitious! I use my long-handled 'feather' duster when I need to reach up on the walls. My vacuum is not a canister type, and has no accessories, so vacuuming the walls would be quite ludicrous! emoticon
I also don't mind looking out at a cold and cloudy day from inside my warm apartment.
I'm sure you'll enjoy hearing the pipe organ, and how great that you'll come home to that wonderful dinner your DH will be making!
I started watching a movie that was taking place in France, but by 20 minutes in, I really wasn't enjoying it, so I watched another episode of Grey's Anatomy instead. One of the guys from Nashville (Will) is in Grey's Anatomy now!

Kate - You and I will both be having some busy days this week. Once you get on the plane on Thursday I hope you'll be able to let it all go.
I agree that when it's 58 inside, it's definitely time for heat! I lived in two cold apartments prior to this one, and when I moved in here I didn't ever want to be cold again! I'm glad you and DH got the air conditioners out.
Have you asked DS if he could pick you up when you return? I forget why your DH isn't returning with you...

I sent my list of books to my library volunteer, but found out she's in Washington, DC now! She will be returning home tomorrow and says she'll get my books on Tuesday, so I'm looking forward to that! I am reading 3 of my own books now, so I'm not in a hurry but one of the books is actually due back tomorrow. I've been told not to worry about that now that I'm in this special program.
I'm just as happy she won't be here today because I really didn't feel like getting dressed. Tomorrow it's back to the grind of 'things to do', so I'll be getting dressed every day.
Our trees are getting a little more colourful now.

I hope you're both having good days!

Mema – have fun at the organ concert.

I saw the SD zoo when I was 19 or 20 so it’s been a long time. I think we’ll have fun walking around there.

We’re also on the verge of getting frost but not quite yet. Tomorrow will be mid 70’s but the high on Thursday when we leave will only be mid 50’s.

Leslie – I had to turn my heat on downstairs yesterday. It was 58 degrees inside and that was just a bit too chilly. I told DH that we HAD to take the window air conditioners in now that the heat was on so he made time in the afternoon and we did it.

I remember your bear story, too, now that I’ve re-read it. I’ve never been that close to a bear.

I’m starting to plan for the week to come. I have appts. for different things every day and then we’re leaving Thursday. Our flight isn’t until noon so I have time to do some last minute packing in the morning. Not sure how we’re going to get to the airport. We can take an uber all the way to the airport, or drive to the express bus and pay for parking there. I’m coming home alone and my phone is such a dinosaur that I can’t put the uber app on it so it’s easier for me to take the bus and pick up the car to get home. Humm? Maybe DS will be available to pick me up again?

I got a lot of cleaning done today and even vacuumed some walls! There were some cobwebs up high that I couldn't get other than with a vacuum.

It was a cold, windy, rainy day, but for some reason I loved it! I loved looking out our patio doors over the lake and watching the wind and the water - maybe because I was nice and warm inside! LOL

Tomorrow is church, then I'm going with my friend from my meeting to hear the pipe organist play at the local high school in Spooner. Should be fun! I'm looking forward to it. DH is going to make pork steak in the crock pot with sauerkraut and potatoes! Yum!

It's still going to be cool-ish tomorrow and a bit windy, but some sun and no rain!

Leslie - I do remember you telling that story about your encounter with the bear, but reading it again gave me goosebumps when you said you were basically face to face with it!
We haven't had freezing temps here - yet! But next week it will dip that low.
What movie did you decide to watch?
I'm now on Season 5 of 6 seasons of Nashville - I'm looking forward to it being over. But their seasons were very long - 22 episodes in season 4! I am now finally to a point where I have not seen these episodes. But I am glad that I started back to the beginning because I forgot so much of it. Plus I'm now keeping up with the TV shows that have started back up for the fall.

Kate - I have been to the SD Zoo, but it was years ago - but I do remember it is a very good one. The zoo in Brownsville, TX is also a pretty good zoo. I've been a couple of different times. I do enjoy walking around at the different zoos!
So sorry to hear about your friend's mom - I hope you are able to get together with her and her husband. I'm sure it would be helpful to her.
Your salad sounds like it was a good one!

Have a peaceful day!

Mema - I got a kick out of reading about your close encounter with the bear. I don't remember if I've posted about this before, but I had a much closer one! All of a sudden on the road ahead of me, I saw something black walking across the road. At first I thought it was a large black dog. I took my foot off the gas, and there was plenty of time for it to finish crossing the road, but when it was almost at the right side of the road, it stopped and changed direction! By then I was very close and could see it was NOT a dog. I put on the brakes, and the bear and I ended up side-swiping each other. Fortunately my window was up because its face was probably no more than a foot from mine. As it went by, the whole side of the car sounded as if it was being crumpled. I could see in the rear view mirror that it went behind my car and into the woods. I drove 2 or 3 miles before pulling over to check the damage - there was none! The only remaining evidence was urine on my rear tire - that fascinated our dog when I got home!
Good for you for getting your ironing done!
We haven't heard about snow in our forecast yet, but I think it went down to freezing or below last night. There was a very cold wind, so I had to shut my windows.
No, you won't be there much longer. I'm sorry you have to leave, but the winter could get quite nasty there.

Kate - yes - it was a busy week last week, and next week will be busy too. I think that if my windows were going to be done this next week, they would have notified me by now. I'll be relieved when all my testing is done.
Your plans for San Diego all sound good. I would especially love to see their famous zoo!
I hope you'll be able to meet your friend and her husband. It's really a shame her mom has pancreatic cancer.
Your salad recipe sounded good.

I'm waiting for a bunch of meds to be delivered, and then I'll be reading of course.
I'll be looking for a movie on Netflix for tonight.

I hope you're both having good days.

Leslie – doesn’t it seem like all the busy times come at once. Now that you’re waiting for your windows, you have multiple appts. to be out at. But I’m glad you’re getting all the testing done and hope that the doctors will find some ways to make you feel better.

Mema – one of the parks up in Alaska runs a “Fat Bear Week” to judge which bear has gained the most weight in preparation for hibernation. Glad your encounter wasn’t any closer than it was.

I’ve given DH a list of things to do in San Diego. There is the SD zoo which I want to see and Balboa park has several different museums. We’re staying just across the road from that. There is also a state historical park in the old part of town w/ guided tours. And Torrey Pines National park just outside the city.

And I hope we’ll meet up w/ a friend and her husband on one of the days. She just found out that her mom has pancreatic cancer so that may put a damper on visiting her.

The MOPS group went well. I pulled up my recipe for a broccoli and cauliflower salad. It’s nice this time of year when those are in season and it’s a change from regular green salads.

DH had his appointment at the dentist this afternoon. That all went well - but on the way over there, a bear came running out of the woods and ran right in front of us about 50 ft. away, crossed the road and back into the woods on the other side! It was amazing! I asked DH how much he thought she weighed and he guessed about 350 lbs.!! It was pretty cool, actually! But also very grateful we didn't hit her - I think it would have done more damage to my car than to her! Seriously! But boy oh boy, could she run! It was amazing to see her go!

Hey, I got my ironing done this afternoon after we got home! emoticon I did a bit of picking up sticks in the yard before we had to leave for the dentist. It was "fresh" out there! A little chilly, but not too bad. Looking ahead, they are predicting rain/snow mix for next Saturday! I do like to see some snow before we head South.

Leslie - My DH has an endoscopy and colonoscopy scheduled for the 18th of this month, and then we will probably leave around the 23rd of Oct. So not too much longer, really. I never really look forward to leaving. Once we're down there, I'm OK, but I do love it up here much more.
You've got a lot of things coming up. I hope your not scheduled for your windows either on any of those days! But I do hope they get done before it gets too cold!

Kate - The site we use for glasses is ZenniOptical.com I think between my DH and myself, we've ordered over a dozen pair of glasses. And we have always been pleased with our results.
Did you come up with a simple recipe for your MOPS group?
It's nice that your DH will be able to work while your on your retreat. Do you have any specific plans for your vacation after your retreat?

Have a great day!

Mema - Welcome back. I understand getting caught up in a show and forgetting to post. I need to post before I get to the couch so I can start reading.
I'm glad you were feeling all right!
I don't blame you for not going to that restaurant/bar to eat if it would have been full of drunks. That doesn't sound appealing at all.
You had a good group at your meeting. I forget when it is that you'll be heading south.
I'm glad the hairdresser can help you get started with the style you want.
I won't know until I have another breathing while walking test if I will qualify for the free oxygen.
I don't blame you for waiting to get your flu shots.

Kate - I also hope my windows will be done before it gets much colder. It's just in the low 50's, and we could get frost tonight.
It's lucky your DH will be able to get some work done while you're at the retreat.
I hope your MOPS group went well. Did you get a recipe copied out?

I was out this morning for my chest X-ray and bloodwork. I arranged for the bus to go to the bank Monday, and to the hospital on the 11th for my bone density, and back to the hospital on the 16th for my pulmonary function test. I hope the windows won't be done on any of those days.

I hope you're all having good days!

Pat – is your son visiting? How long will he stay?

Leslie – hope things work out well for getting oxygen at no cost. And that your windows get done soon before it gets too very cold outside.

My retreat is Friday to Sunday the first weekend. We’ll travel out to San Diego on Thursday. DH will work from the hotel room while I’m at the retreat.

Mema – staying home on a cold wet night sounds like a good idea.

What was that on line site where you buy your eyeglasses? I wanted to pass it on to someone else.

Nice that you have the same hair gal as your DH and could ask her about that style.

Today is the second meeting of the MOPS group. The woman who was co-leading my small group will be away so I hope it goes well. We got an email during the week to copy out a simple recipe to share and I haven’t done that. I hope I get an inspiration before I have to leave. LOL

So sorry for not posting last night - it just totally slipped my mind until this morning! I guess I was so wrapped up in watching episodes of Nashville, I just forgot.

I was feeling alright - the congestion has seemed to subside a bit. DH and I were going to go to the local restaurant/bar here for Broasted Chicken last night, but it was raining and cool and so then the place fills up with people and "wood cutters" as we call them - people who can't work because of the rain - usually men in construction or other outside work, so then it can get quite noisy and full of drunks. Not my cup of tea! So we just had leftovers.

Our meeting yesterday was good and there were 12 of us there! So, still good for this time of year.

Today, DH and I went to Duluth/Superior for shopping. He needed a haircut and has the same gal that I do and so when he was finished, I showed her the picture of what I would like and she said she could definitely get me started. I will probably go back in a week or 2 and have it done.

Leslie - I'm glad you are eligible for the free oxygen - if that's what you need. And glad to hear your lung tests should be done quickly. We were going to get our flu shots today, but DH said we should wait - since he has to go to the dentist tomorrow and I've been trying to get over this cold/congestion, he didn't want anything to interfere with the shot. That was fine by me.
It was quite chilly today - especially in Duluth - right by Lake Superior! But I kind of liked smelling the clean, fresh, crisp air! It was cloudy all day today.

Kate - We usually get our flu shots at Walgreens; we don't have to go to the doctor, either which is handy so we can do it on our own time.
How nice that you will have another vacation with your DH in San Diego! I hope you have a wonderful time at your retreat as well!
As I said up above, I'm feeling a bit better. Thankfully it hasn't gotten any worse and has not moved into my chest!

Pat - Praying for you! emoticon

Happy Friday Y'all!!

Pat - I'm glad you're feeling a little better. My prayers continue.

Mema - I hope you are feeling better today; I gather you were not feeling well last evening.

Kate - When is the retreat? Over the first weekend? I'm glad your DH will be with you. I hope you have a lovely vacation there!

I had just cancelled my bus to the bank this morning when the guy with the company which provides oxygen called to see if he could come this morning. We talked quite a bit, and then we walked up and down the hall with the pulse oximeter on my finger. My oxygen level was only 86 while we were walking, and my legs were bothering me too. He is going to recommend that my doctor order another test, and if that works out the same way, I will qualify for free oxygen. I have no idea what it costs if it's not free! He thinks all the lung tests will be done quite promptly. It seems obvious to me that I do need oxygen.

I could also get my flu shot at the pharmacy, but I actually didn't finish asking the doctor all my questions yesterday, so I'll go back there; we may also need to discuss some test results.

It's cloudy and cool today, and they are doing the windows directly above me today. Maybe they'll do mine next week finally!

I hope you're all having good days.

Leslie – yes, the trip to San Diego is the last of the retreats for this particular group. The program ends in November.

This time my DH is coming with me and we’ll stay for vacation Monday – Friday. Then I’ll fly home on Saturday and he’ll fly to San Jose for a week of meetings for work.

Your trip to the doctor sounds like mine last spring – a laundry list of things to talk about followed by lots of tests. I hope they result in positive steps to help you feel better.

I usually get my flu shot at the local drug store so I don’t need to make a doctor’s appointment for that.

Mema – hope you’re feeling better now and the cold didn’t move down into your chest.

Pat – I always feel like prayers start getting answered as soon as we turn our thoughts to prayer.

Pat - I'm sorry your son is setting you off. I pray he will ease off, and you can have an enjoyable time together.

Mema - I'm very sorry you're congested again. I hope you find the right med to help. Kate's suggestion of Sudafed sounds good, or you could ask your pharmacist. I hope you'll be able to get to your meeting today.
Your ironing will wait for you!
The meatloaf and baked potatoes sounded like wonderful comfort food.
We are having a cold wind today after our warm day yesterday. I think it's 50. When I went out to get my bus this morning, I walked all the way to the bus shelter to get out of the wind. The bus can't pull through the drive the way it usually does because one of the cranes is blocking the way. I wish the cranes would get done in the front of the building. They can't have many more windows to do in the front, but they still do need to do mine.
My pedicure was lovely, and because it was so warm yesterday and I was wearing sandals, I got polish again, but today I need shoes and socks.

Kate - I'm glad you enjoyed your yoga class! I'm glad you're having a quiet week. Mine is a bit busy. I went to the exercise class Monday, for my pedicure yesterday, to the doctor today, and I'm going to the bank tomorrow. I'll also see if I can get the bus Friday to take me for my chest X-ray and to the lab for the bloodwork the doctor ordered today.
I wanted to have the X-ray when I left the doctor, but it was too close to lunch. They asked if I could come back at 1 PM but I said no - I didn't feel like waiting an hour and a half. She suggested coming at 8:30 in a morning so I could get done quickly, so I need to call the bus for that, and to go to the lab after that.
I have to call the hospital for appointments for the bone density, and for the CT/angiogram to see how the circulation to my legs is. I am also having trouble breathing, so the hospital will call me to have a pulmonary function test soon, and an oxygen provider will be coming here to my apartment to assess my need for oxygen. I didn't even ask about everything I wanted, but that was enough! They didn't have flu shots available yet, so I'll go back in about a month for that, and to ask the rest of my questions.
You'll have a busy week next week!
Is it another retreat you're going to?
I'm glad that you drink water when you fast!

I agree with both of you that 1000 calories seems low - I always thought 1200 was the minimum. However, I'm not very active. I didn't say how quickly I wanted to lose. I want to lose at least 10 pounds, but 15 or even 20 would be good.

I hope you're all having good days!

Pat – saying a prayer for you. Family certainly do know all the buttons to push.

Mema – sorry you’ve got a stuffy head. I find that a decongestant like Sudafed works well when I have that, rather than a full blown cough medicine that has all the other things in it.

Hope that you got to your meeting and that it was a good one.

Leslie – hope you your pedicure is nice and relaxing.

I noticed on the "goodies" thread that you have your doctor's appt., too. Is that for the circulation issues?

As Mema said, 1000 calories sounds like too little, but I guess they take your size and activity level into account. And how fast you say you want to lose the weight. I tend to lose very slowly.

And, yes, I always drink water when I fast although I know a few people who have done dry fasts w/o water. Those fasts should only be done w/ a doctor monitoring you b/c they can be dangerous. It’s much easier to get badly dehydrated than to starve.

I got to my yoga class yesterday for the first time since before vacation. Felt good to be back in motion. This is a nice quiet week w/ not much extra stuff planned. I'm enjoying a chance to kick back after vacation.

Next week I have an appt. w/ my PT doctor, haircut and foils, and a mani-pedi. And I’m leaving for San Diego on Thursday. So I’ll need to get stuff packed, too. It’s going to be a busy week.

I woke up today with my head all stuffy again. And I've had drainage in the back of my throat for a couple of days that doesn't want to go away. Last night I took some Benedryl, but that didn't really help. Today I took some DayQuil and not much has changed. I will take some NyQuil tonight so I can sleep. Tomorrow is my meeting and I don't want to miss it since I missed last week because of going to the Twin Cities. What bugs me the most is this constant feeling that I have to swallow - because it feels like there's something stuck in my throat (doesn't hurt).

So, I didn't do my ironing today like I thought I would. I rested and watched a few episodes of Nashville.

I'm making meat loaf and baked potatoes for supper tonight - so that's some comfort food. It's chilly here today after the warm day yesterday. I think the high was only in the 50's.

Leslie - I hope you enjoy your pedicure. I'm looking forward to getting one when I get back to TX. It's so easy because they are located right inside Walmart and for $25 it's a good pedicure!
And no I haven't finished Nashville yet. I'm at the end of Season 3 and there are 6 seasons. So far I know I have seen all these episodes, but it was so long ago there is a lot of stuff I didn't remember. I do want to get thru it, though since now so many of my "fall" TV shows have started up again.
I always thought 1000 calories was a bit too low, but maybe not. Years ago, I did low carb - no particular diet, just cut way back on carbs and I lost weight and I wasn't counting calories. I know keto is similar.

Kate - Oh, how nice that your meeting can stay open for awhile longer! And especially since you had 2 newcomers.
I know there are probably too many times that I feel a hunger pain and instead of ignoring it for a bit, I go and grab something to eat and I'm sure that I'm not always hungry. I was just reading an article about eating when I'm not really hungry. I'm going to try and pay more attention now.

Have a great day!

Just a brief post today - I'll be going out soon for my pedicure, which I really need!

Mema - I guess you haven't reached the end of Nashville yet. I liked the ending when all the actors were there in a group to say goodbye.
We are having one 'hot' day today - upper 70s, but tomorrow the high temp will be 50!

Kate - I'm glad your Monday meeting will continue for another month or two!
When you fast, you can drink water, can't you?
The prepared meals at your store sound good!

I am starting to track my food intake, not only for calories, but for carbs, protein, and fat. I want to ease into sort of a keto diet. I answered a quiz online, and they said for my size and the amount of weight I want to lose, I should only have 1000 calories/day. So far today I've had over 500, for breakfast and lunch. I had the lunch early, so I'll be ready for the bus at 12:40.

I hope you're both having good days!

Pat - thanks for setting up the new threads for the month.

The meeting yesterday was surprisingly good. Not only did the 2 semi-regular people come, we got 2 new people as well. And someone has donated $100 so we can cover rent and stay open for another month or maybe two. I was quite happy about it. I hated to see that meeting close.

Leslie – glad you don’t have the smoke. I understand it can really get into upholstery and rugs and be hard to get rid of.

Hope the news about the people in the hospital continues to be good.

Our grocery store has a small hot food area where they have things like chicken wings, deep fried shrimp, some hot meats like meat loaf or roast beef with sides. They also pack up individual dinners that can be reheated. Those have salmon, meatloaf, sometimes ribs or chicken breasts. Each meal also has a starch like potatoes, rice or noodles and a veg – often mixed corn peas and carrots. The selection varies.

Mema – warm and humid is coming here today and tomorrow. 70’s and chance of showers. Not bad for October. Then highs in the 50’s for the end of the week.

I remember my mom setting up the iron in front of the TV and sitting down in a chair to do her ironing.

Fasting – I have done shorter fasts – one or two days. They’re not all that hard if you don’t have some kind of medical condition like hypo-glycemia or diabetes. You get hunger pangs occasionally, but they don’t last and will fade away if you just ignore them. I know people who do 3-7 day fasts w/ no bad effects. But for now, I’ll just follow my sponsor’s suggestions and not restrict my food just modify what I’m eating.

36.5 pounds gone, 17.5 more pounds is my 2020 goal.
