Busy day today. Had my Hymn meeting this morning. That went for 2+ hours but we got thru June of this year. We have another meeting scheduled for March 1st. Hopefully we'll be able to get thru to November and be done until this fall.

Came home and started on laundry. Got most of it done before leaving for dinner. We had a lovely dinner. I had BBQ ribs and DH had Dijon Chicken and Mushrooms. Both were delicious. DH had me get a full rack so I could bring half home for him! LOL It is a nice place - very nice inside, but a bit noisy. We were in a booth, so it wasn't too bad. DH liked it a lot - so there may be a "next time"! LOL And really, this place was much nicer than Perkins. Probably more like a TX Roadhouse or Longhorn Steakhouse.

Tomorrow I need to set up for communion at church. During Jan/Feb we have Saturday services along with our regular Sunday service, so that means 2 set ups. And I'll have to go to church on Sat. after the service and take down that communion and set up for Sunday. But I only have to do that twice. Last year we offered communion on Sat. services every week for some reason, but this year we're only offering on the Sundays we have communion. Which makes more sense to me. And I'm on the schedule for Feb.

Leslie - Sounds like you got the same weather as they were having in MN.
I hope your library volunteer was able to get home OK. That would be awful to find out you can't get into town!
I'm glad you have a good relationship with your computer shop. That's nice to have. If I didn't have DH, I don't know what I would do. I'd have to find a place like that, too. I know Best Buy has their "Geek Squad" but I'm not sure exactly everything they help with. And probably not over the phone as that would be free.
I guess I wasn't as clear as I should be when I mentioned my sponsor going back to Iowa. She's only going back for the summer and will return in the fall. I call her during the summer, but I also have a gal in WI that I can talk to. She's not my sponsor, but she and I have gotten to know one another better over this past year.
How interesting about your dad working for P&G.

Kate - Oh, what a day to be moving for your Pastor! I hope it all goes well for him.
I'm glad you got things worked out for getting the check from the insurance company. That is strange that it was dated and post marked so far apart.
Oh, and when I mentioned about P&G and I put in ( ) out of Boston, that was The Gillette Company. Their HQ were in Boston. P&G is in Cincinnati.

Happy Friday!

This has been the worst day yet of this storm. All the highways in and out of town are closed; the doctors' office building is closed, as are the library, all schools, and lots of other businesses and services. Even our city transit buses are not running today.
So, since my library volunteer was going to be out of town yesterday, she was probably not able to get back into town; anyway, with the library closed today, she wouldn't be able to get books.
I'm very glad I have such a good relationship with my computer service shop. It wasn't long ago that I had to get my keyboard replaced. They often walk me through the things I can do while on the phone, so I'm very grateful for their help. I was very upset about that program, and knew I didn't want it, but it was at night and I didn't know how to get my computer back. I'm very glad I've got rid of it now. I hope I'll remember how to remove a program like that if it ever happens again.

Mema - I noticed that extra post from you yesterday and knew I had seen it before. Some things are just mysteries.
I'm glad you got caught up with your sponsor. I'm also curious about what you will do once she leaves in March. Do you have another sponsor in Wisconsin?
I'm sorry you're getting rain. But, maybe it's actually needed.
I hope you'll like that restaurant this time too. I've never heard of it. I have heard of Perkins, but have never been to one.
I was glad to finally finish reading C&P. I did really enjoy it, but I should have started reading it sooner so there wouldn't have been so much pressure to finish it by the end.
I don't blame the post office at all for stopping the mail delivery in those brutal temps!
You're very lucky to have dental insurance. It's just too expensive for me to buy. By the way, my dad worked for Procter & Gamble from the time he returned from WWII in 1946 until his death in 1968! There used to be a big factory in Hamilton, Ontario, and he was the manager of production and planning for all of Canada. I remember the wonderful family Christmas parties they had, and the Christmas hampers of food that everyone got. It was a great company to work for.

Kate - you're lucky to be able to call on your DH for help with computer issues! I was a programmer for a brief period in 1974, but had to leave and go back to nursing. That was before nurses were well-paid, but the pay was better than what I was making as a programmer. I was only earning $209 twice a month (not even every 2 weeks) - my rent at the time was $250/month, and I was a single mother, paying $100/month for after school child care. I hated to leave programming, but just couldn't afford to stay.
I'm very sorry that today is moving day for your new pastor!
I'm happy to hear you finally got the cheque from the insurance company for DD's car! That was quite a delay!

I hope you're both having good days!

Mema – will you get a new sponsor since yours is moving so far away? Or will you keep up w/ her by phone and email?

Hope the hymn selection goes well and you’re able to get a lot of them done.

Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen is one I’ve never heard of. I’ve been to a Perkins while visiting my MIL in North Carolina.

Leslie – oh, I hate those programs that hi-jack your computer. I’m lucky I can always just call my DH to fix things.

Enjoy your new batch of books from the library.

Today is going to be our coldest day and it’s not as bad as it could be. The high temperature this afternoon will be around 15 deg with a wind chill “feel” of 2 degrees. It’s unfortunate that today is moving day for our new pastor. They are moving into the first floor of a 3 family house in the next block down the street from us.

We finally got the check from the insurance company for my DD car. They had told her they had all the paper work and would write the check the first week in January. Last Friday, my DD called to say that the check had still not arrived so the agent cancelled and re-issued it. Wouldn’t you know, that cancelled arrived on Saturday! The check and letter were dated Jan 7th but the post mark was the 24th. I called them on Monday and complained about that. The new check hadn’t yet been sent so they agreed to overnight express it and I got it Tuesday. Whew! I’ve always had good service from this company so I was really surprised at what a mess they made of my DD claim.

When I went to start posting I noticed my post from last Saturday was stuck in between your 2 posts! Not sure how that happened!

It was good to see my sponsor after being gone for 2 weeks. We had a lot to catch up on. She will be leaving the valley on March 1st - much earlier than she usually does but she is moving into a new apartment up in Iowa. I will be missing her.

Went to Walmart and picked up the things I needed. Came home and about an hour later, I went up for the Zumba class. It was a great workout! While I was at Walmart it started misting/drizzling and so I drove my car up to the clubhouse for the Zumba. It turned into kind of a nasty day. Tomorrow we're supposed to get more rain - not just a misting or drizzle.

Tomorrow morning I have a Hymn meeting. We'll be picking out hymns for March/April/May and if we can June. Then we'll have to meet again. I'm caught up thru June.

DH and I are going out for dinner to Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen. I have a gift card that was my mom's that she never used, for $25. So that will be a nice dinner for us. I have eaten there before but DH hasn't. If you look online it gives it 2 $$ for price range. So not overly expensive, but nicer than a Perkins.

Leslie - I'm glad you were able to finish C&P - that was a very long book. I'm sure you are glad to be done.
I'm sorry you missed your exercise class, but glad your stomach was better by the afternoon.
My DH has gotten that same message on his computer - it is total spam. Were you able to get it off your computer? My DH had one heck of a time when that happened to him. He was able to get it off his computer by himself, but it can really screw up your computer.
I heard on the news tonight that the Post Office motto - Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night.... doesn't apply when there is a Polar Vortex! LOL I don't blame them for not delivering. Some of them still walk their routes and others are constantly opening their doors if they have a truck, I certainly would not want that job in this weather up there!

Kate - I do remember all that about your dental work now. I'm glad you were able to put this crown off until your benefits kicked in again. That was smart. We have dental insurance, too and it certainly is nice to have. Most retired folks that I've talked to down here say their company didn't provide the dental once they retired. My DH worked for Gillette (razors) which is now owned by Proctor and Gamble (out of Boston) and that was a benefit for retiree's. Fortunately, being so close to the border, IF we didn't have the insurance, I would be hesitant, but know enough people who go to Mexico and have dental work done. But it would probably only be cleanings. I'm guessing DH would rather pay the bill here and have any crowns, etc. done in the US. Even w/out insurance, dental procedures seem to be cheaper down here - not a ton, but every little bit helps.
I'm glad you had a nice lunch and Bible study.

I hope you both stay warm!!

Have a wonderful Thursday!

Good afternoon! I did finally finish that book yesterday - I liked it a lot but I'm glad to be done!
I called my volunteer this morning but she was on her way out of town for the day, so she will call for my list of books tomorrow. I think the books are due back today, but in this weather I don't think anyone will get put out about that.
The school buses were cancelled again today, due to snow squalls and whiteouts. It's supposed to be the same again tomorrow. There are at least a couple of highways closed.
I didn't get to the exercise class this morning because my stomach was upset but seems OK now.
I spent several minutes on the phone with the guy at the computer service shop I've used for years, to find out how to delete a program I was 'forced' to download Monday night after it hijacked my laptop. It was telling me all my files would be deleted in a certain number of seconds unless I downloaded the program. The seconds were counting down. I shut my laptop off, but when I turned it on again that message was still there, counting down. So I did download it to stop the countdown, but knew it wasn't a program I wanted, so I was glad to be able to delete it today!

Mema - I'm really surprised to hear that mail delivery is cancelled, but those temps are brutal. I hope your DS and family will not lose power! We've been lucky not to lose it here either.
I just read a bit about I Can Only Imagine. I wouldn't be able to watch that either. My first husband, who abused both of our kids, was also named Arthur. As far as I know he's still alive, so karma hasn't caught up with him yet. My son has absolutely no contact with him.
I'm sure your DH wouldn't be interested in Book Club, ha!

Kate - I have hundreds of books on my list, but when I call my volunteer every 4-6 weeks, I ask for 5 or 6, and there are a couple of authors I like who have written numerous books so she can fill in with their books if she can't get at least 4 from my list. I still have lots of my own books, and books that my friend has passed on to me, so I'm never without something to read. I am truly grateful to my volunteer!
I haven't read anything on any devices. I could see them being useful during travel, to reduce weight, but I love holding books and turning the pages!
I'm glad you had a good lunch and Bible study.

I hope you're both having wonderful Wednesdays!

On Thursday night I think I slept an hour and a half, if that. Oh, well. I got over to my friends mid morning and we decided we would go to the casino for just the day. She could not get a free room on a Friday night. That was ok. We had fun - I lost about $80!!!! A LOT more than I have ever played and didn't have any big wins. I would be up, then down, up then down again. But I had fun and I had the money to lose. I had brought along enough cash that if I spent it all, that would be ok. We left the casino about 7:30 pm and ended up going to bed about 1:30 am. So I was tired! Got up at 8 am, it was snowing. I had over an hour's drive back to my DS's house. But it wasn't accumulating a lot, so I left about 11:30. When I got back to my DS's house the kids were napping, so I was able to get in a 2 hour nap for myself. emoticon

DS made up a large batch of crappie's for dinner tonight and I made fried potatoes, like my mom used to make. He loves those as well. So it was a great last night dinner. They went out with a bunch of friends to an "Escape Room" place. They have done this before and really enjoy it. So I gave the kiddos their bath, played a bit and both kids went down w/out a peep. I could tell Ryan was tired, so that was nice. But even when I was telling him it was getting close to bedtime, he never fussed at all for me.

Tomorrow my flight leaves at 3:15 and the Twin Cities is under a winter storm warning from 3 pm Sunday to 6 am Monday. They are expecting 5-8", so I hope I get out of here before all of that starts. I shouldn't have any problem. It has been fun, but I am bushed!! I will be glad to be back in my own bed with my own pillow.

Leslie - Have you been able to find out any more information on your husband? So, are your divorce proceedings kind of on hold now? Especially since you were concerned about him having to take on your debt?
I hope you are able to finish your Crime and Punishment book by Tuesday. What other Pulitzer books are on your list?

Kate - How long did your DD dance? She must have been very good to be doing solo's. What type of dance did she do?
Sorry to hear of your fall in yoga! Glad you didn't have far to fall, though so you didn't hurt yourself.
What did you end up doing to fill in the rest of the time you had with your DGS while your house was being used for the meeting? I'm sure your DGS liked having the whole day with fun things to do!

I've got to get all my stuff re-organized now and my suitcases packed. Re-figure which things I will leave here. I bought myself some new pajamas at Walmart earlier this week. They are the softest material I've ever felt. It's like a cross between fleece, flannel and velour! Like a heavier silk almost but warmer material It's a thin-ish material so it's not bulky wearing them. I just love them, but of course I don't need those in TX, so those will stay up here.

I will try and write tomorrow night, but if you don't hear from me it's because I didn't have time. I get in at 6:30 tomorrow night. I have my Bible study lesson that I should do before Monday and just general catch up with DH. We've emailed a couple of times, but that's about it.

Enjoy your Sunday!!

Mema – I had two root canals over last summer/fall. The one that was giving me so much trouble was finally crowned in the fall. I had used all my dental insurance on the other work I had done on that tooth so had to pay full price for that one crown. This tooth was stable after the root canal so I put off the crowning until my dental insurance kicked back in w/ the new year. I have another crown that needs replacing, too, so I’ll probably max out my insurance again this year.

Leslie – you have quite an ambitious list of books to read. Nice to have a volunteer bring them to you. My library is within walking distance so I picked up a book after my OA meeting on Monday. Most of my reading is done on my iPad but I do like the feel of a good, old-fashioned book w/ pages.

I didn’t get out to the park but I had a very nice lunch and Bible study w/ my friend.

Seems like most of us are getting colder than normal weather. Those in the upper middle part of the country are getting the worst. Keep warm and stay safe.

We’ve got a warning in our area that we might get snow squalls and white outs during the evening commute. Need to let DD know about it. No snow accumulation expected which is nice since tomorrow is going to be in bitter cold and no one will want to be out shoveling.

Went to my meeting today. I think there was close to 22 people there! That was nice.

I get notifications from a local TV station up in the Twin Cities and along with school closings up there thru tomorrow, a lot of businesses were closing tomorrow and the Postal Service cancelled mail delivery tomorrow!! I have never heard of that one before. But they are saying you can get frostbite in as little as 5 minutes. There were some power outages as well. I sent a text to my DIL to see if they had any outage - they did not, thank goodness. She told me she stayed home with the kids today and my DS is staying home with them tomorrow so along with Dakota's school closing, their day care must also be closed.

Tomorrow I will meet with my sponsor and then go to Walmart for groceries.

Leslie - We watched Let There Be Light - a Christian movie about an atheist who finds God. Kevin Sorbo was in it - he does quite a few of these types of movies. And his real life wife played his wife in the movie along with 2 of their 3 children. At first the acting was a bit overdone and sometimes a little sappy, but by the end of the movie, both DH and I were crying. So it did turn out to be a good movie.
While I was in MN I had scheduled "I Can Only Imagine" to be here for him to watch. That was also supposed to be very good, but I knew I couldn't watch that one. I think it would have been too emotional for me. DH said it was good, and he had tears on that one as well. Mainly he said because it was a true story.
I remember that movie Book Club - I'll have to see if I can stream that one myself on Netflix. I know DH would not want to watch that one! LOL

Kate - The tooth you were getting prepped for the crown - that wasn't the one you were dealing with this summer is it?
You did have a busy day. Did you have time to get the dogs to the park? How was your lunch?

Hope you have a great day!

Mema - you're right that you got out of MN just in time! The wind chills there are truly horrible. It's bad here too, but not -50; it's in the -20s or -30s which is bad enough, and we have a lot of snow squalls which will continue through Thursday. The school buses are not running again today.
I will call my BIL at the end of this week to find out how Greg is. When I get the forms I need from Danny, I will take them to the courthouse to finalize the paperwork, but I will not go in this bad weather. I hope it's better next week. I am also hoping that Greg is continuing to improve.
What movie did you watch? On Saturday I watched Book Club with Candice Bergen and Jane Fonda - it was rather lightweight, but fun.

Kate - Lucky you with 'dry and sunny' in the forecast! I haven't heard what it will be doing here on Friday, but it will remain bad until then.
I remember waiting until after 6 PM to make long distance calls.
It sounds like you will have a busy day.
My housekeeper will be here today so I'm looking forward to seeing her.
I expect to finally finish C&P today, so I'll be calling my library volunteer tomorrow with a new list of books to look for. It's always exciting to get a bagful of new books!

I hope you both have good days.

Mema – nice to be home again, yes! Glad you weren’t delayed by the snow storm.

Those snow days and delayed starts are always hard on working parents. I'm glad we can be here to watch DGS on those days.

I remember when we were newly married – before cell phones and when long distance was expensive – we were very careful to only call a few times and very quickly. It’s really nice now to have a good conversation every day.

Leslie – as Mema said, I hope your DH does well even though that means you’ll be continuing w/ the divorce.

We’re getting the bitter cold from the middle of the country on Thursday. But it will be dry and sunny so it shouldn’t be too bad. We're getting some snow showers today but only an inch or so.

Today is yoga class, lunch and Bible Study w/ a friend and then grocery shopping. I’ll try to get the dogs out to the park if I have time. Yesterday I spent most of the afternoon at the dentist getting a tooth prepped for a crown. The dogs had to settle for playtime in the backyard.

Looks like I got "outa Dodge" just in time! I thought maybe it would be snowing before we left Mpls., but it wasn't. My plane was delayed for some reason - never found out why. We left at 4:00 instead of 3:15, so not a huge deal. I was in the airport waiting for my luggage at 6:50 pm.

Most all the schools in Mpls./St. Paul were closed today, but Dakota's school and the schools out by her were 2 hours late. I don't think they got quite as much snow on the West side of the cities. I'm not sure how my DS worked that out. She would have no place to go until school starts, and both DS and DIL work, so I'm guessing my DIL had to stay home until school started since my DS starts work at 6:00 am.

And most all of the schools are closed thru Wednesday because of the wicked cold that is moving in. Minnesotans really aren't wimpy when it comes to cold, but wind chills of -50 is a bit much.

It was very nice to get into my own bed. Although I woke up briefly early this morning thinking I was still at my DS's house. That usually never happens to me.

Went to Bible study. The gal who leads it has her sister and husband visiting, so the sister sat in on the Bible study. Afterwards, they were all headed to South Padre Island for a few days.

Tomorrow is Bible study at church, but I am going to skip it because it's the last week of the series on Paul, so no sense really in going. Next week he's going to start the Revelation study once again. I'm looking forward to that.

But I will go to my meeting!

Leslie - I'm sure you are in for the cold temps, too. I'm not sure if you'll be quite as cold. I'm glad you won't have to go out.
I hope you are able to decide what to do about your divorce. I guess I'm hoping you are able to go thru with it, as that would mean your husband is better.

Kate - DH and I rarely call one another which is rather odd since we do so much talking when we're together, but I guess we just save it all up! LOL If there is something in particular, we will call or email.

DH is getting a movie ready for us to watch, so I better finish this up.

Have a great day!

We are expecting a terrible week for weather - lots of snow and frigid temps with brutal wind chill values. I'm glad I have no appointments. The snow has just started for today, so we did have the exercise class earlier.

Kate - it is hard to know what to do about the divorce. Obviously I don't want to have to put out another $300 if I don't have to, but if he's going to live, I do want the divorce to become final, for his benefit since I'm the one with debt.
I will definitely be done with C&P tomorrow. I have about 80 pages left. I will read at least half of that this afternoon, and the rest tomorrow.

Mema, I hope you got home safely and had a good sleep in your own bed! Those pajamas do sound very luxurious!

I hope you're both having good days.

Leslie – that kind of uncertainty about the divorce and your husband’s health must be hard to deal with.

How is Crime and Punishment coming along? Still on track to finish tomorrow?

Mema – your new pj’s sound lovely. I like soft things to wear.

Hope your trip home was uneventful. I bet it’s good to be back home and in your own bed.

When either of us travel, we always have a phone call every day. Usually we try to time it for first thing in the morning here so the person at home can chat over morning coffee. Sometimes that ends up at lunch or dinner time for the person traveling.

Mema - I'm glad you had a good time with your friend, and that you didn't mind losing that money! It's good that you were able to have a nap after you returned.
It's great that the kids went to bed so easily for you, but you knew they would!
I hope you can get out today before that storm gets going.
Safe travels, and I know you'll be happy to be back with DH, and able to sleep in your own bed.
The Pulitzer for novels was first awarded in 1918, and Crime & Punishment was written in 1866, so it wasn't a winner. The list of books I wrote down are all books by women, many of which I've read before such as To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Breathing Lessons by Anne Tyler. Some of the ones I want to read are Beloved by Toni Morrison, The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton, and The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.

Kate - I think you're absolutely right about the writing style and sentence structure being very different in the older books. I think if I can keep up this pace, I will be done with this book by Tuesday. I'm sure I would be able to renew it if necessary - I doubt that there is a waiting list! However, I am eager to reach the conclusion.
It sounds like you had a good day with your DGS. I'm sorry you weren't dressed warmly enough to linger outdoors, but it's great that your DD was done early, and that you could join the others for a dinner out!
That's amazing that your daughter took ballet for all that time - she must have been very good!

Our weather is staying very cold, with snow squalls off and on. I think it's supposed to be the same tomorrow, so I am hoping that the school buses will not be cancelled for another day.
Oh, I did hear from Greg's brother on Friday - he is apparently doing better! So now I'm not quite sure what to do about finishing the divorce. He was still in the CCU, and Norm said that Greg will not be able to return home to his apartment. There will be a 31-day waiting period for the divorce to become final, but I'm not sure if that starts from the day I take the papers to court, or when the province has received all the papers from the court... I need to find that out.
I plan to spend the afternoon reading.

I hope you both have good days.

Leslie – I find that with older books. The language and sentence structure is so much more demanding than modern books. Now most books seem to be “dumbed” down so they can be read w/o really concentrating. Probably b/c our attention span has grown so short w/ our digital age. We want things to reach out and grab us.

Mema – sorry you had such a poor night’s sleep. Nice that you could get a nap while your grandkids were snoozing.

I’m glad you had a fun time w/ your friend even though you lost so much money.

Have a safe trip back home today. I hope you’re not delayed by the storm.

My DD did ballet (including toe) and modern dance. She danced from the time she was 3 until she went to college. Her high school was an arts school so she had dance classes as part of her schooling. And she did some choreography and staging as well. She tried to keep it up in college but was too busy w/ classes. Now, of course, we know that she should not have been doing it w/ her joint condition, but she loved it.

Yesterday morning, I brought DGS up to our room and fed him a few of the goodies from the meeting. We hung out there until it was time to go to swim lessons. After the lesson, he wanted to go and spend his money at Target. He bought Pokeman cards and some other little figures that fold into balls and then pop out in to monsters.

He wasn't hungry for lunch then so we spent an hour at the library and then went to lunch. After lunch we went to the park. It was sunny but only about 30 degrees - I didn't have enough layers on to be comfortable standing around. Then DD texted that she was finishing up so I drove DGS up to her work and dropping him off.

I was home by 3:30. The meeting at our house when on until 5:30. Then a few people were going out to dinner so I came along. Nice end to a long day.

It was snowing hard earlier, but now the sun is out! It's very cold though and staying cold for at least the next couple of days.

Mema - I hope you had a wonderful time last night, and have fun babysitting tonight!

Kate - it's the same here for when the buses are cancelled.
I hope you can find things to do with your DGS today - the library and a movie sound like good choices.

I need to keep up the pace reading Crime and Punishment - I want to finish it by Tuesday. It's an interesting book, but I'm unable to read it as quickly as I can read more modern books. I do have a list of books that have won the Pulitzer in years past, so I want to include at least one of them in my lists of requests for my library volunteer to search for. I will be requesting more books next week.

Have a great Saturday!

Mema - how was your visit w/ your friend?

Leslie – our schools get cancelled when the roads aren’t safe to travel. They plan the school year with at least 5 snow days but sometimes there are more.

Hope you hear something soon about your husband. Waiting is always hard.

Our church leadership team is having a day long retreat to do vision setting for the coming years. My DH volunteered our house for the meeting. Which is fine. But it means I’ll be watching DGS the whole day somewhere away from home. I’ll take him to swimming lessons, out for lunch and then to pick out a birthday gift with money he got from my MIL. Those are easy. But that still leaves an hour in the start of the day and a couple hours afterwards. I had thought I would be taking him home in the early afternoon, but DD has to work so it will be later in the day. Maybe the library? Maybe a movie? I'll have to look up show times.

Thank you both for your comments about my husband. I still haven't heard anything, so if I've still heard nothing by tomorrow, I will call his brother back to find out what's going on.

Mema - thank you for the meatball recipe. I will try that soon.
I'm glad you were able to go to Dakota's dance class. Things are rarely cancelled here, except for icy roads and/or whiteouts, and today there are whiteouts so the school buses were cancelled again! One highway near Lake Huron has also been closed all day - there has been zero visibility.
I know it's frustrating to witness the bedtime battles when you can't do anything. I'm glad you'll be missing that tonight, and glad you'll be in charge tomorrow night!
Enjoy your night tonight!

Kate - I may need to get some flannel sheets! I used to have some but don't know what happened to them.
I'm sorry your DD's SO has so many debts and can't help out a lot with all the expenses. It sounds like he does help out when he can.
I'm glad you didn't have to have the dogs there while the cleaners were there.
I'm sorry you fell over in your class on Tuesday. I'm sure I wouldn't be able to maintain that position! Glad you didn't fall again yesterday.

I hope you both have enjoyable Fridays!

Mema – I used to love watching my DD’s dance classes. She was very good, too. By the time she was 12, she was doing solos in their recitals.

LOL about canceling b/c of the cold. You’re right that people living in the north don’t tend to cancel for little things like bitter cold and snow. And we laugh at the southerners who cancel when there’s an inch of snow.

Have a fun time w/ your friend today.

Leslie – so sorry to hear about your husband. That must have been a shock. And coming so close to the anniversaries of those deaths must have made it even worse.

I’m so glad you got to do things like exercise class and talking w/ a friend. Both are good ways to reduce stress.

I have flannel sheet that I switch to around Christmas time and will switch back in the spring when it warms up. I do love the feel of them on cold nights.

DD complains that her SO doesn’t help out, but I think that’s not quite true. I know he buys things like jackets and boots for DGS and pays for some of the regular bills. But he also earns less and has a lot of debts including a government debt for back taxes and school loans. My DD also has a dread of any kind of debt which is why she's so careful about money.

DS called yesterday morning to say that his GF was working from home yesterday and keeping the dog home w/ her. It was nice b/c the cleaners were here and I didn’t have to keep them closed up in one room.

I got to my yoga class and managed to stay upright the whole class. Tuesday I was still a bit off balance from having the remnants of this head cold and fell over. Fortunately we were doing a calf stretch down on one knee so I didn’t have far to fall. Nothing hurt but my pride. LOL

I got to see Dakota at dance class tonight. She did very well. She is a good little dancer and seems to catch on quickly to new moves. It was -30 below windchill outside!! I thought maybe the class would be cancelled, but not in MN. Luckily we were able to park very close to the door. And my DS had the car running for quite a long time before we left for dance class so the car was nice and warm.

It's the battle of bedtime once again and so far it's Ryan in the lead! He knows just how to play his parents with his whining, crying and overall bad behavior. Well, at least I won't be here tomorrow night and on Saturday night I'm babysitting, so we won't be having any of that behavior. LOL

Leslie - I'm very sorry to hear about your husband. I'm sure that is a shock since he is younger than you.
Sounds like you had some nasty weather. That might actually be worse than just plain old cold. I do not like ice at all.
And so sorry about that anniversary. That must have been a very hard day losing both your brother and grandmother the same day.
I'm glad you had such a nice long talk with your oldest friend.

The Meatball Recipe -

1 lb. hamburger
1/2 onion, diced
1/8 cup milk
4 saltine crackers, crushed
salt and pepper to taste
1 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese (don't skimp on the 1/2 cup)

Combine all ingredients and form into balls. Pan fry until done. Drain on paper towels.

It's a very basic recipe, but I do think it's the parmesan cheese that makes them tasty. My DS loves them and I do, too.

I hope you get your book Crime and Punishment finished by the due date!

Kate - You are so correct on DS and DIL getting on the same page. That's one of their problems. DIL tends to go easy on DGS, so that doesn't help at all.
And if the kids were decent eaters as far as a variety of foods, it wouldn't be so bad, but they are soooooo picky.
How nice that you were able to wear your sandals for your pedicure. Mid 40's sounds pretty nice right about now! LOL

I will probably not post tomorrow night, but will be back on Saturday night.

Enjoy your Friday!

Once again, I apologize for my absence. I've had a fairly eventful couple of days. After I posted on Monday, Danny called me to help me with the online portion of my divorce papers, and then he had me send the completed forms to him so he could print them and mail them to me. I was feeling very relieved.
Tuesday, one of my brothers-in-law called to let me know that my husband is in hospital and probably dying. He has several diagnoses, and was having trouble breathing. He had signed the DNR order. I was quite shocked. Greg is younger than I, so I didn't expect that he'd be dying first. So, now the divorce is in limbo. I'm very sad about this news - I never stopped loving him, even though we've been separated a very long time. I was getting the divorce mainly for his benefit - if I had died first with debts, my creditors could have gone after him for payment. I'm quite sure he has no debts - he has a horror of debt, as do I. Mine was accumulated mostly when I was making car payments. Every time I took my cat to the vet, or needed car or computer repairs, or went to the dentist, or needed new glasses, anything at all beyond my regular monthly bills, I had to use credit cards. Now I'm making a very big effort to pay down the debt, but it will take a few years to get it all paid off.
We had extreme cold weather early this week, then yesterday it was alternating between snow and freezing rain, which made everything very wet, and that all froze overnight, so there is a lot of ice today and school buses were cancelled again today.
Oh, Tuesday was also the 50th anniversary of the death of both the younger of my two brothers, and one of my grandmothers. That was a truly horrible day in 1969.
By yesterday I had fallen way behind online again, and also went to the exercise class, so today I am trying to catch up with everything.
My 'oldest' friend - we've known each other since we were 3 - called yesterday too, and we talked for over an hour. It was good to hear from her.

Mema - I can understand your frustration with holding your tongue when your DS or DIL don't act together regarding consequences for bad behaviour. I'm sure it will be nice to be back in TX soon!
The electric blanket sounds like a good idea. I was wishing I had flannel sheets when I woke up cold in bed this morning.
Could you give us your recipe for meatballs? The Parmesan sounds wonderful! I used to have a good recipe for meatballs, but have no idea where it is, so I usually just make meat sauce for pasta.

Kate - I'm glad you drove to the meeting on that very cold day. I'm sorry no one else showed up though.
I'm sorry your DD feels so strapped for cash all the time. Does her SO share the household expenses with her?
How great that you could wear sandals yesterday to get your toenails done! I will need mine done again in the next 2 or 3 weeks. I doubt if I'll be able to wear sandals! The woman who does my feet has offered to come here, and I may take her up on that for this next time.

I hope you're both having good days. I have to pick up the pace in reading Crime and Punishment; I started with one chapter/day, then went to two, but I think I need to do three for the next few days. The book is due back at the library on the 30th.

Mema – wow! You’re having some cold weather there. Most of what you have will head straight across the country to us, but it will be a bit more mild as it gets near the ocean. We’ll have lows in the teens and 20’s.

Oh My! Kids, parents and eating can be such a stressful thing. I tried to be pretty laid back about what my kids ate b/c I knew my own thinking around food was pretty screwy and I didn’t want to pass on my issues.

DGS is a pretty healthy eater for a kid his age but my DD still tends to lean on him to finish everything and not waste food. And since we often have both of them here, I try to keep quiet during meal times. But it’s hard sometimes.

Sounds like your DS and DIL need to get on the same page w/ what’s allowable.

Leslie – you must be busy w/ reading or computer. We miss your posts.

Yesterday was fairly warm - mid 40's so I decided to go get my toe nails done. I was able to park right outside the salon so it was only about 10 ft. to walk in my sandals to get to the car.

Today was pretty good until dinner time. I made chicken thighs (just baked in the oven) and Ryan did not want to eat. DS kept trying to get him to eat and then finally gave Ryan a 10 second countdown and if he didn't start eating, he was going to his room for the night. DS counted down and Ryan did not eat, so he scooped him up and then Ryan was crying saying he was going to eat. DS put him in his room. We finished up and I was cleaning up and asked what I should do with Ryan's plate. DS said, just leave it and we'll see if he eats it later!!! I'm thinking - You told him he was going to his room for the rest of the night. Then DIL got home (we had to eat early because DS had an appt.to go to). So, he told DIL what happened. Before I know it, Ryan is out of his room, sitting next to mom - he's supposed to be eating, but she's on her phone. This went on for over 1/2 an hour. He did eat some of his meal. Then he played the whole rest of the night!

I'm thinking to myself, well, Ryan just learned a lesson that he can put up a huge fuss, decide when he wants to eat and then get to watch a video and pretty much do whatever he wants for the rest of the night. And since he was put to bed at 8:15, he has been up 4 times for some pretend reason. That's the kind of thing that irritates me. One more day and then I will go over to see my friend. That will be a nice break for me. I'll come back on Saturday, hopefully with a whole new attitude! LOL

Kate - It's nice that you can help out your DD with some of the necessities for your DGS when things go missing! I'm sure it is stressful for your DD when the money is tight.
I can't imagine 50 degree weather here right now. We're going into single digits with wind chills in the -20 below range for tomorrow. And it's going to stay that way until Saturday. I do hope you don't end up with freezing temps after your rainstorm. That would be a nasty mess.

Leslie - Hope you are getting some things done and getting in some reading.

Have a great day!

Leslie - hope you finally got a call back from the guy who's supposed to be helping you.

Mema – sounds like a fun time playing in the snow w/ your grand kids. Sunny and teens is pretty good for being outside.

I like the idea of adding parmesan to meatballs. I’ll have to keep that in mind next time I make them.

My DD is really worried about money. She makes barely enough to keep the bills paid so when DGS loses mittens and water bottles, it stresses her out. I try to buy extras for him when I see them on sale.

Our storm was just one day of wet sloppy snow followed by one day of bitter cold misery. Fortunately it came over a long weekend so the disruption was minimal. There is another storm coming in this week but it’s a warm one. On Thursday we’ll have mid 50’s and pouring rain. Not great for the people who like to ski but nice for the rest of us. I hope the rain stops before the freeze returns b/c I don’t like ice.

We got a little bit of snow today. I would say an inch or two of light, fluffy stuff. I did shovel DS's sidewalk and driveway. Then DGS and I went in the back yard and he went sledding for a bit. I went down with him a few times. When Dakota got home from school, we went sledding in the back for a bit and then just played outside. It was still chilly, but the sun was out and it was in the high teens for temps.

I made spaghetti and meatballs for dinner tonight. My DS loves my meatballs. I have my mom's recipe. It's nothing fancy, but she would always add 1/2 cup of parmesan cheese and I think that is what made them so good.

Tomorrow I will bake up some chicken thighs and have baked potatoes with them. My DS said he loves baked potatoes, but DIL only uses instant potatoes. I'm not sure why - potatoes are so easy to use and make. My DS did get some fish from a friend of his, so we are going to have that on Saturday night. The fish is crappie - pan fish and good.

I am enjoying my time here, but will be glad to get back home. My DS and DIL just do things differently than I do - and it's hard to not say anything. But I have been good about keeping my mouth shut.

Kate - I did have enough blankets on my bed in the basement, but I hate getting into a cold bed when it's cold outside, so last night was nice. I had turned on the blanket before going to bed for about an hour, so it was nice and toasty, but not too hot.
I don't blame you for driving to your meeting with it being so cold outside. I think I would have, too. Sorry no one showed up after driving on the bad roads, but at least you were there just in case.
My DGS couldn't find his mittens today and I found a pair that he didn't want to wear at first. He said he would just keep his hands in his pockets! LOL I told him that would not work. We did finally find his mittens, so he did wear them. I told him we couldn't go outside until he had some mittens on his hands. My DIL is a bit the opposite of your DD - she couldn't find a pair of his mittens one day (w/out looking very hard) and so she just goes out and buys another pair. Afterwards, she did find his old pair.

Leslie - I hope you are getting in some reading and/or paperwork for your divorce worked on.

Have a good day!

Mema – that’s an early start time for school. I don’t think ours start until 8 or 8:30.

An electric blanket sounds like a great idea for a chilly basement. I just pile on the comforters and warm them up myself, but the bed is cold when I first get in.

Leslie – “playing hooky” LOL! it’s nice to have a break and not have to feel guilty for skipping a class. I actually felt that way about church. I was hoping they would cancel b/c I wasn’t feeling all that great but I wouldn’t have skipped it if they had decided to hold the service.

I decided I would drive to my meeting yesterday even though it’s only a few blocks and I usually walk. It was just too cold. The roads were awful, too. Turns out no one else came. I read through the meeting format by myself and then left after 15-20 minutes. It was a nice break for me even though I was alone.

Since I had the car, I took the rest of the hour to pick up some much needed supplies at the grocery store. I hadn’t done much shopping the week before b/c I was feeling sick w/ my cold and the long weekend w/ company had pretty much wiped out all the fresh stuff.

We had my DD and my DGS here all 3 days. DD slept the whole time or hung out in her room. It was pretty much like having DGS here alone except for making an extra serving of dinner for DD.

Yesterday was so bitterly cold – it didn’t get above 8 degrees. I told DGS he couldn’t go out and play in the snow. He did have a fun time out there on Sunday even though he was wearing my mittens b/c he’s lost the pairs he had. I’ll need to go buy some replacements to give him when I see him on Saturday. DD tends to be weird about things like that – you lost them, you can go without. Sigh.

Dakota was able to get into the dentist a bit earlier (10:30 vs. Noon) and she was done in about 30 minutes. She had 2 cavities and then they put sealants on her teeth. That should help to prevent further cavities.

The rest of the day was just spent playing after they napped. I did run to Walmart and bought myself an electric blanket. My bed is in the basement and it's chillier down there. I haven't been too cold, but this week is going to be even colder than it has been. So I'm looking forward to that tonight! Getting into a toasty warm bed!!

Tomorrow Dakota has to be to school early (7am instead of 7:30). The orchestra she's in practices every Tuesday morning before school. I had her play me "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star". She did pretty well. A few wrong notes, but you could definitely tell what she was playing.

Kate - I'm glad your DGS went back to sleep for you. 5 am is a bit early. I had the two kids come down over the weekend and they snuggled in with me, but only for about 10 minutes. But it was 7:30 when they came down, so the short time was reasonable.
Did you get to your meeting in the cold? Did many show up for it?
Glad you got in a lot of reading.

Leslie - I'm sorry your exercise class was cancelled.
I'm glad you also got in your reading.
I'm waiting for my DS to get home from a meeting. My DIL is already in bed, so maybe he and I can chat for awhile. I'm also watching America's Got Talent.

Happy Tuesday!

Good morning - I feel as if I am playing hooky. Our exercise class was cancelled this morning due to the foul weather. All the school buses were cancelled too. It is supposed to start warming up a little tomorrow.

Mema - I know what it's like with a lot of little kids running around. I think I was at both of my grandsons' 5th birthday parties, where there were 8 or 10 little ones, mostly boys. It was very rowdy! I got lots of good photos.
Thank you for telling me about your DIL's work. That does sound like an excellent job, working for the state. I'm glad she's behind bullet-proof glass.

Kate - 12-hour shifts are long, especially when it's a physical job like nursing. As I got older, I stopped working 4 days in a row, and was also having a hard time with 3 days in a row.
I also spent most of the day reading yesterday, except for cooking.
I'm really sorry you need to get to a meeting today in the bad weather. I hope you'll be warm enough.

I hope you both have good days.

Leslie – sounds like a busy and productive day out w/ your friend. I sometimes bring home half of my entrees for lunch the next day.

Hope Danny gets back to you soon so you can find out where to access the forms you need.

Those 12 hour shifts sound so long. I have a friend who does that now and she says she’s finding it harder to do 3 days in a row as she gets older.

Mema – b’day parties for little kids are always chaotic. Nice for your DIL to have the day off since Dakota is out of school.

It was so overcast here, we didn’t see the moon at all.

My kids both did gymnastics when they were little and so did DGS for a few years. The gymnastics academy was just down the street from us so we could walk to it. It closed a few years ago and the building (which was originally a class room for the Catholic church next door) is now being turned into an apartment building.

I spent most of Sunday reading a mystery since church was cancelled due to snow. I did make 3 meals for the family but didn't do much else. DH did the snow blowing and shoveling and DGS went out to play in the snow.

DD and DGS spent the night again. DGS wandered into our room around 5 this morning saying that his mom was snoring. We tucked him in with us and he went back to sleep for almost 2 hours.

I have a meeting today which I should really go to b/c I have the building key. The church we meet in will probably be closed due to the holiday. I'm not looking forward to it since we have this bitter cold weather. It's going to be single digits all day long. But I did miss my meetings last week on Wednesday and Saturday so I need to be in a meeting.

Today was a relaxing day until we went for the b-day celebration. It was fun, just pretty chaotic. Five kids between the ages of 3-7 and three of them were boys!

Tomorrow my DIL is off work as well as Dakota off school. They have dental appts., but that should not take too long. Not sure what is on the agenda.

Did you see the "blood moon"? I'm going to go outside for a minute when I'm finished here and check it out. I looked out about 9:30 and the bottom quarter was just starting to get covered and there was a red haze ring around the moon.

Leslie - It has been bitter cold here. I think our high today was just in the single digits.
I'm glad you got a lot of errands done and had a nice lunch. It sounds like it was delicious.
Dakota takes tap and hip-hop (which is basically a song they dance to with tennis on instead of tap shoes).
My DIL has her degree in Criminal Justice and works at the Department of Corrections. It's a State of MN job, so has good benefits. She doesn't have to work directly with prisoners, but does sign in men/women who are on probation and are meeting with their agent (similar to a Probation Officer). Occasionally when someone comes in, they are going to be arrested. My DIL knows this, but the person doesn't. It may be that they have failed a drug test. So, that can get a bit "exciting". She does sit behind bullet proof glass, but generally is not in any real danger. She loves her job, so that's good.

Kate - I'm glad you enjoyed your b-day celebration and were able to get some things done while the others were playing at the arcade. There is barely any snow on the ground here. Very strange for this part of the country.

Well, it will be a busy day I'm sure tomorrow, so I'd better get to bed.

Have a great day!

I apologize for my absence. I was out with my friend Diane on Friday to do errands (bank, Walmart, and she did some grocery shopping at another store too) and have lunch. I had a 'chicken parm sammy', which was a large and tasty chicken sandwich. I only ate half of it there - we also devoured a garlic loaf, and shared a large Caesar salad. I had the other half of the sandwich last night.
We are having wicked weather today. It's -33C with the wind chill, and it's very windy, with snow and/or blowing snow. I've had to close all my windows tightly - the wind was whistling around them so loudly. I am wearing a hoodie and fuzzy socks. I had two breakfasts.
I haven't done anything with my divorce yet. I need to talk to Danny - I'm not sure if he's a lawyer or paralegal - who's been helping me up to now. I need to know where to find the program I need to fill out more pages in, but once I do that, my friend Diane said she could help me with printing the documents I need. There is also a woman in my exercise class, who has said I can come and visit her and her cats; I'm thinking she may also have a computer and printer, so I may not have to wait a long time until Diane is available again. I should find that out tomorrow. I called Danny twice or three times last week, but he didn't call me back, so I hope we can connect this week!

Mema - it sounds as if you are having a very good time with your family. How great that you and your DS could go to a meeting together!
One nursing job I had didn't officially start until 6 AM, but I made a point of being there at 5:30 - I wanted to scope out the situation at the nursing home, and needed to make out the assignments for the staff for the day. I was in charge, and took that seriously. Those were 12-hour shifts, but we only worked 3 or 4 days in a row.
What sort of dance is Dakota doing? What kind of work does your DIL do? It sounds like a great idea for Ryan to be in gymnastics.
I hope you're having a good time with your DIL's family for the birthday celebrations. I have a lot of family birthdays this month too!

Kate - I'm very glad that your DGS was able to have both parents there to watch him swim yesterday! And glad you were all able to have the birthday lunch together.
You got a lot done while the others were at the arcade. How are you feeling now?
Your weather sounds awful too! I'm glad your DD was able to park in the garage.
I hope your DS was able to get his snowblower started.

I hope you're both having good Sundays!

We had a nice day for our joint B'day celebration. DGS's dad came up w/ DD so they were both able to watch DGS swim. He's quite good for his age. Then we met up w/ DS and his GF for lunch.

After lunch I opted to come home while the rest of them went to the arcade and played games w/ DGS for a couple hours.

While they were at the arcade, I put the plastic covers over the porch furniture and cleared out the side of the garage for a second car.

They came back here to have cupcakes and open DGS's presents. Except for DS, he had to go home to try getting his new snowblower started before heading to his bar-tending shift. He had tried it in the morning and it wouldn't start. I hope he was able to get it going.

DH drove DD's partner back to their apartment in the late afternoon since he has to go to work today. DD and DGS spent the night here w/ her car in our garage.

The storm has dropped about 4-6 inches of snow but the reports say we're going to get another inch or more of sleet and freezing rain today. Ugh. Nasty, heavy stuff to shovel. But it has to be cleaned up today b/c tomorrow is going to be frigid! Single digits tonight which is rare for us.

Went to DGS's gymnastics this morning. The coach for those little boys (3 and 4 yo) has the patience of a saint! You talk about bundles of energy!! But he's teaching them balance, coordination as well as following directions and listening. So it was fun.

We went to eat at Old Chicago for dinner tonight. It's a pizza place, but they have so much more than just that. But Dakota and Ryan are terrible when it comes to eating meals. Dakota had her own little pizza and Ryan had a grilled cheese and I think they each ate about 4 bites in total! But the minute you mention doughnuts or anything sweet, boy they can sure eat that up. And I know that's my DS's and DIL's fault. They were not good eaters themselves, but my DS was better than DIL. But I just keep my mouth shut! LOL

DS and DIL went to see the movie, The Upside tonight after we got home from dinner. I would love to see that one myself. Looks very funny!

Tomorrow afternoon we're going to my DIL's aunt and uncle's house for a combined b-day celebration. There are 3 or 4 that all have b-days in January. I know all of them, so it will be fun to see them.

Kate - I'm not exactly sure why Dakota had the extra day off, but I did enjoy having her home for the day.
If you've played cribbage before, it would come back to you quickly. The hardest part is making sure you add up all the "15's" and don't skip any.
How did your b-day celebrations go? Were you able to get a ride home? I'm sure that was a lot more restful for you!
I hope you didn't end up with a lot of freezing rain or a lot of snow. Did DD and DGS stay the night?

Leslie - I hope all is going well with the divorce paperwork. I hope you have the help you need. It has been bitter cold here. Temps just barely above 0 and wind chill's in the -teens. I guess I missed all their nice weather they were having earlier. But not much in the way of snow at all here. I think the one chance we had while I'm here was yesterday and that was a bust. Oh, well.

Have a peaceful Sunday!

Mema – your DS sounds like my oldest nephew. He’s always been in some kind of job w/ vehicles.

Nice that your DGD had an extra day off. My DGS has Monday off.

My DH and I used to play cribbage but it’s been a long time. I would have to look up the rules to play again.

We’re celebrating DS’s and DGS’s birthdays today with a B’day lunch. I'm still stuffy w/ the cold. I'm thinking that I'll ask someone to drive me home after lunch so the rest of the bunch can enjoy the arcade trip that is my DS’s gift to my DGS.

Fortunately the storm isn't arriving until night time. The forecasts are very uncertain about the amount of snow and the amount of freezing rain and ice. I’m hoping for more snow and less sleet.

DH says he’ll try to move things around in the garage to fit DD’s car in. Right now we have the trash cans etc. along one side of the garage but we used to squeeze 2 cars in there by parking both of them up against the walls. One car pulling in forward by the right wall and the second backing in by the left wall so the driver’s door on both cars is in the center.

Leslie - hope you had a nice day of reading. Any word from the lawyer who is supposed to help you w/ the paperwork?

Kate - my DS works for an OTR Trucking company. He just started this new job this past December, I think it was. He's changed jobs so many times it's hard to keep up with it. But he's always had jobs in some type of automotive (cars, ATV'S, and now semi's).
I hope you have a great day with your birthday celebrations.
And I hope the snow stays away until you are all thru. I think that was a good idea to tell your DD to pack extra clothes so she can just stay over.

I took the kids to McDonald's today for lunch. Dakota had the day off school and she also has Monday off. I had to stop at Walmart anyway so I thought that would be a nice treat.

My DS and I went to a meeting tonight. I was the only woman there. When we got home, the kids were in bed so DS and I played cribbage. I beat him 3 out of 5 games! Not too bad considering that I only seem to play with him and so that's about once a year! LOL
Tomorrow I will go and watch Ryan in gymnastics in the morning and then we all are going out for dinner. My DS and wife may go to a movie afterwards.

Better get to bed. The kids will be up early.

Have a good day!

Mema – glad your notebook is co-operating now. That’s a really early schedule your DS has. What kind of work does he do again? When my DH was a little boy, his dad had that kind of schedule so he was the one that was home w/ the kids after school and made dinner on weeknights.

I know I marvel at how my DD and her partner have to juggle things to care for DGS w/ their busy work schedules and everything else that needs to be done.

Leslie – glad your haircut is great. It always makes me feel better when I have a good haircut.

Hope you can get the help you need for all the paperwork.

Friday at last! It's been a strange week w/ being sick. They're predicting a snow storm this weekend. Fortunately it's coming in Saturday night into Sunday so it won't impact our birthday celebration lunch on Saturday. I already gave DS his gift on his birthday yesterday but we have DGS's gifts here for him.

I told DD she should bring extra clothes when they come up so they can spend the night. She has to park on the street at her apartment and that means she'd have to dig her car out of the snow after the snowplows come through. Not a good thing w/ all her joint issues.

Well I'm not sure if it was because I didn't have my notebook plugged in last night (and it was fully charged) or if their internet was just slow for some reason, but it seems to be ok now.

Ryan is napping so I thought I would post a quick note. Dakota will be home from school in about an hour. I laundered their sheets today as well as the kids' clothes. I know my DIL does appreciate that. My DS's hours at work got switched to 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM. He likes getting done early, but not sure about having to get up at 4:30 or so. He's been in bed at 9:00 pm since I've gotten here. But that leaves DIL to do the whole morning routine with the kids. DS used to get them their breakfast and walk Dakota out to the bus stop and wait with her. Now DIL has to do it all. But I did ask her if DS then picks up the kids and makes supper. She said he's done that a few times.

They have a hectic schedule at home, too. DH and DIL go to the gym different nights, Dakota has dance one night, so at least 3 of the 5 nights they are busy.

Leslie- It's gotten a little chillier since I've arrived, but there is no snow, so no need to really play outside right now.
I hope you can get your friend Danny to give you the help you need. I surely don't blame you for wanting to get this all finalized.
I'm glad you are happy with your haircut
Oh, and my back is feeling better, too!

Kate - I'm sorry you are having such a terrible cold. I do hope the medicine works for you. I know we start taking zinc right away at the first sign of a cold. I guess that is one of the main ingredients in some of those newer cold remedies. And I know for me, rest also helps.
I agree with Leslie that I think the dogs will be just fine in the dog run for a day or two.
What did you decide to make in your instant pot? I am going to bake a chicken for dinner tomorrow night for the family. Tonight we are having homemade tacos - Dakota has her dance class tonight.

Have a great day!

Mema - I'm glad you arrived safely, and your time with Ryan went well!
Sorry your notebook is not being cooperative. Hope it will be working better today.
I hope it isn't too cold there.

Kate - I have another call in for Danny who's been helping me with the divorce. I will see if he can help me get into whatever program I need, and maybe he could print the necessary forms. I could theoretically do that at the library, but wouldn't know how to find the things that needed to be printed to get them done. I am not at all computer savvy. I know how to do emails, and that's about it. If he can't help me, I will find a lawyer who will help. I just want to get this over with. I do have some savings, so it would make sense to use them for this.
My haircut is great, so I'm happy about that.
I'm really sorry your cold is so annoying. I hate having a sore nose from all the wiping. Using the Instant Pot tonight sounds like a great idea!
I'm sure the dogs will manage just fine with the dog run in your yard. You're lucky to have that.

I hope you both have good days!

Mema – glad you arrived safely and things are going well. Hope you can get your internet connection working better. I find that when I have a slow internet connection, it helps to type my responses into a Word document and then copy and paste into the reply window.

Leslie – hope you had a nice haircut and a chance to relax.

It does sound like you could use some help w/ the paperwork if it’s not too costly. My DD comes to our house to print things since she doesn’t have one. I don’t know if your library has a printing service but our library has a printer that people can use to print things out. They can be printed either from home or at the library. Of course you have to pick the pages up after they’re printed.

This cold is really making me miserable. Actually I think the medicine is partly to blame as well. I do hate the feeling I get from decongestants but my poor nose was red and raw from the tissues so I’ve been taking them. I sent DH to get take-out the last two nights. I think I might toss something in the Instant Pot tonight. That should kill any viruses on the food, right?

We got out and walked the dogs to the park yesterday. I told my DH that today was supposed to be 20 degrees colder and I figured I’d be feeling 20 degrees sicker so they would have to be content w/ the dog run in the back yard.

I'm having some trouble with my notebook, it's working really, really slow, so I'm using my phone right now. And that's not the fastest way for me.

So I'm just going to say that my flight in was fine, no hiccups.

The first day with Ryan went well, too.

I'll try and see if I can get my notebook to run faster and post more tomorrow. And hopefully respond to your posts.

Have a great day!

Mema - I'm glad you were at the airport in plenty of time. I hope your trip was uneventful, and you are now with your family in MN! I know you'll enjoy every minute!
How is your back? I hope it wasn't bothering you as you were travelling. Was your DH's cousin also on your flight? Nice that you could go to the airport together!
I'm pretty sure I went to a Golden Corral in Amarillo when I lived there. I was amazed by all the food choices!
I'm glad you won't be missing a Bible study while you're away.
We don't get the good Super Bowl commercials here, so I rarely put the game on. If the Packers are in it, I'm more interested!

Kate - I was busy yesterday! My housekeeper, Lou, was here for the first time in 4 weeks, so we had a lot to talk about! By the time she left, I was exhausted and needed to get on the couch to read and relax.
I'm very sorry you have a cold. I don't like cold meds either. I hope the cold won't hang on too long.
I have been thinking of going to a lawyer with the papers I have completed so far, and find out how much it would cost to have her/him help me finish it all. I do have the guy who's supposed to be helping me, but he's hard to reach on the phone. I am supposed to be filling out forms in an online program (what program??) and I'm supposed to be printing off all sorts of things, but I don't have a printer... It's all very frustrating to me.
We had a lot of blowing snow earlier this morning, but now the sun is out and it's getting colder.
My friend is taking me out Friday, so I could get the remaining money orders for the divorce then, but I need to decide if I'll continue with this, or turn it over to someone who knows what's going on. I feel as if I'm at the end of my rope.

My hairdresser will be here in a little while to cut my hair - I'll be glad to get that done!
I hope you're both having good days.

Mema – nice that you got to the airport with time to spare. I always feel more relaxed when I’m not crunched for time.

I have such short legs that I never need more leg room. In fact, I always put my back pack under the seat in front of me so I’ll have something to put my feet on otherwise they don’t reach the floor.

Leslie - did you have a busy day yesterday? Was that your housekeeper day?

I've come down with a head cold and my nose is running like a faucet. Ugh! I hate the feeling I get w/ decongestants but the constant running is even worse so I'm all dosed up.

Thought I would post a quick note as I wait in the airport. We got here in plenty of time. It was busier than I expected. There must have been a lot of people on vacation because when I was checking in, the attendant said the flight was just about full. That's unusual. I've encountered the return flight full before, which makes more sense. Who wants to be flying to Mpls in January????! LOL

I also upgraded to an exit row seat for $25. It's closer to the front and has more room.

Well the plane coming from Mpls is here so they should be loading pretty quick.

Next time I post will be from Mpls!

Have a great day!

Mema – how nice that things worked out so you don’t miss a Bible study. So you will be gone for a week and a half? That’s a nice long visit.

I’ve only been to Golden Corral once or twice. What an immense amount of food they had. It was hard to choose what to get.

Have a lovely and safe flight today. Those poor TSA workers are not being paid. I’m sure many of them have had to call in sick and get second jobs to pay their bills.

I’m not a big sports fan but I did watch parts of last Sunday’s game where the Patriots tromped the Chargers. Boston is such a big sports town, you kind of have to keep tabs on the teams at least a bit.

Leslie – having just paid to have the paper work done for my DD new car instead of doing it all ourselves, I can’t imagine how hard it is to do something so much more difficult as a divorce all on your own. I hope it is not too complicated and confusing.

We’re going to be above freezing for the next two days but they’re predicting a mix of snow and rain for Friday. Ugh!

Today I'm headed to yoga class and then I need to do some shopping in the afternoon. And I need to make my menu for the week before that so I'll know what to buy.

Went to Bible study this morning. They are not going to meet next Monday because too many people will be gone, and then the following Monday I'll be back, so I won't miss a lesson. That will be nice since I'm really enjoying this study.

This afternoon, DH and I went to Golden Corral (not Old Country Buffet) like I wrote yesterday. It was very good. And so nice that I didn't have to cook.

I think I have pretty much everything set. I just have to pack those items that I will still be using in the morning. My DH's cousin will be picking me up at 9:15 am. Our flight doesn't leave until 11:55 - it takes 45 minutes to get to the airport, but we both got an email saying that there may be delays because of the shutdown and TSA worker's. So we thought we'd better be safe than sorry and get there in PLENTY of time. She said she has a book to read and I can play games on my phone. So that will be fine.

I may not get a chance to write tomorrow night. By the time we get home and I see the kids and then talk with my DS and DIL I'm sure I'll be very tired. But I should be able to post after that.

Leslie - I'm glad you made it to your exercise class. I did skip my cardio dance as the first half moves pretty fast and today, it was going to be outside at one of the gal's homes because there was something going on at the clubhouse and it was pretty chilly today. So I didn't think the combination of moves and cold weather would be good for my back.
I'm sorry you have so much paperwork to do with your divorce and I'm sure you will be relieved after it's done.
I will be in MN until Sunday, the 27th. At first I thought that was Super Bowl Sunday, but it's the next week. Not that I watch it much. I used to watch it for the commercials, but the last couple of years the commercials are just not as good or funny as they used to be. Too much political correctness I guess.
I texted my DIL tonight about something and when she wrote back she said the kids were talking and said, "One more sleep night and May will be here!" That made my day!! I'm so looking forward to seeing those little munchkins!

Kate - Like I was telling Leslie about the cardio dance - the first half is definitely not gentle movement, and with the cold weather, I'm glad I skipped. I did want to walk up to Bible study this morning because I thought that would be good for me, but my bag is quite heavy and with my back I didn't want to take a chance on that either. I've walked before when my back is fine.
How nice that you have video's of your DGS swimming to be able to show his mom and dad! And I suppose it is hard for his dad to get there with the different hours that he works. But it sounds like they have the regular work week figured out nicely between the two of them - with dad in the morning and mom at night.

Have a happy Tuesday!!

I've been to the exercise class this morning, and then collected my mail from Friday. There was a package with a lot of papers related to my divorce. I'm quite overwhelmed with all there is left to do. It's cheaper doing it this way, but would have been much easier to have paid a lawyer! I will settle down, and deal with it all later this week. I do want it all done ASAP.

Mema - I bet you are getting excited about tomorrow!
I'm really sorry about your sore back and that you missed church yesterday.
I'm glad your DH will be taking you out for dinner today so you don't have to cook.
It is warmer here today, just a little below freezing. It was supposed to be sunny, but hasn't been yet. I'm glad it won't be too bad in MN. When do you return to TX? I hope all your plans go smoothly tomorrow, and you have a good trip. It will be wonderful to see your family.

Kate - I'm glad your DGS's dad is there in the mornings. It's too bad he doesn't drive.
If I ever get an Instant Pot, I will have to ask you which cookbook you bought. I've got a microwave steamer which I love. It only had instructions for steaming a few things, but I've been able to extrapolate from that to cook other things. I especially like steaming artichokes! But a steamer is much simpler that the Instant Pot would be!

I hope you are both having good Mondays!

Mema – sorry about your sore back. Hope you don’t miss your dance class. A little gentle movement might be good for it. But I know you don't want to be hurting when you're traveling.

DGS’s dad works at Whole Foods so he has a lot of different hours. I know he’s home in the mornings so he cooks breakfast and takes DGS to school but he works in the evening so DD does the pickup, dinner and bedtime. He doesn’t drive so he’d have to catch a ride to come to swim classes. I have taken videos of DGS’s classes a few times so they could both watch him swim.

Leslie – hope you’re getting that bit of a warm up that we’re getting this week. It’s suppose to be above freezing for most of the week.

I bought the cookbook separately. There was a small one that came with the pot but it was only a few recipes. I googled “reviews of instant pot cookbooks” so I could find one that was favorably reviewed on a couple of sites. I am trying to reduce the number of cookbooks but I still have too many so I didn’t want to get ones that weren’t useful.

I woke up this morning with a sore back so I skipped church. Took some ibuprofen and a hot bath and that seemed to help. I think part of it was from cleaning my blind yesterday. I was at a weird angle trying to clean it. Anyway, I feel better now. But I think I will stay home from cardio dance tomorrow just to be on the safe side. I will go to Bible study in the morning.

I did get my laundry done and my ironing done. Tomorrow DH is going to take me to Old Country Buffet for dinner so I don't have to cook! emoticon

One more day and I'll be off!! I'm getting pretty excited.

Leslie - I'm sorry you're having such cold weather. It still has been pretty mild in MN. There will be a couple of days where the highs are going to be in the high teens, but that's later on in the week and then back into the 20's and 30's. Here in TX, we actually had a nice day. It was cool-ish, but sunny and no wind. But right around supper time, that's when the wind picked up out of the North and it cooled off a lot.
When I was doing housecleaning, there were 2 women who I worked for for 8-10 years and we got to be very good friends. One of the women had 2 children and I basically watched them grow up. Her son was in the same high school and grade as my DS. I've lost contact with her, but the other woman I still talk to.
Our oldest grandson just turned 15!! I can't believe he's that old already. I've got a picture up North of me and DH holding him when he was just about 3 or 4 months old. We stopped to see him on our way home from TX that year. And he's close to 6' tall now!

Kate - Sounds like you'll have a fun day next week celebrating the birthdays. I hope you find a good place for all of you to eat.
Does your DGS's dad work on Saturdays usually so that he can't come to the lessons? That will be nice for him to be able to be there.
Hope your weather warms up for you, too.

Have a great Monday!

Mema - glad you got your house all clean. That's always a good feeling.
That birdbath sounds wonderful - I love colourful pottery.
Good for you for cleaning that blind; it sounds like a tough job!
We are having sun, but very cold temps, just above 0F.
I love the calendars I get every Christmas from my DS and his family. I have saved them all too. I have thought of cutting out one picture to frame it - I love it and would like to be able to see it more often.
I hope you'll have a housekeeper too. I hadn't thought of having one until after I'd been in the hospital with pneumonia and was very weak. I got one through the agency, and she soon decided to work for herself, so I decided to keep her on. She has been with me almost 10 years I think, and we've become good friends. I'm really looking forward to seeing her Tuesday - she hasn't been here since before Christmas.

Kate - What have you used the sous-vide for? I can imagine all the buttons on the Instant Pot. It's a good thing you're an engineer, ha!
I like the fact that is silent. That one pressure cooker I had seen was quite terrifying. Did the cookbook you got come with it, or did you buy it separately?
Next Saturday sounds as if it will be very busy for you with the birthday celebrations. I hope you find a good place for lunch. I know it's sometimes hard to find vegan food at restaurants. I have a very good friend who's vegan and we've had lunch together a few times. She is usually stuck with a plain salad. She is able to eat salmon occasionally, so that's what she had when we met at the Red Lobster.

It's my older GS's birthday today - he's 16! That seems so hard to believe. I remember so clearly when he was born. I will call there soon.

I hope you both have lovely Sundays!

Mema – nice to have the house clean. My cleaning people were here Thursday so I’m all set for the next 2 weeks, too.

DGS’s lessons are 45 minutes. When he was younger they were half hour but at his level they need more time. He’s in the next to the top skill level and wants to move up. There are a few strokes he needs more work on and a bit more endurance on some of the others.

The bird bath sounds lovely. My sister has one outside her home office and loves to watch the birds while she’s working.

The sous-vide is basically for meats although I read that you can do things like making yogurt or custards that are temperature sensitive. I just have one of the “stick” heater/circulators so it doesn’t take up much room in the kitchen. I wouldn’t have gotten one of the big vat cookers b/c they take up too much room for the amount of time I would use it.

Leslie – my mom used her pressure cooker all the time so I was used to it. If they’re used correctly, they are safe. But a stove top pressure cooker is regulated by having a bit of steam released every 20-30 seconds so they are kind of noisy and scary. The Instant Pot is totally silent. I wasn’t even sure it was working right at first except the lid was hot.

The manufacturers seem to have gone overboard w/ buttons and bells and whistles. Like microwaves that have all the buttons for “popcorn” “left overs” and “beverage” when all you need is two buttons – time and power level. I was glad I got a cookbook that had the first chapter telling me which buttons I really needed and how to work the thing.

We had a quiet day yesterday. It was bitterly cold out although it was sunny. DD worked a long day and picked up DGS after 7:30. I packed up her dinner to take home w/ her.

Next Saturday after swim lessons, we’re having a joint birthday celebration for DS and DGS. DS wants to take his nephew to the arcade again. We’ll plan lunch somewhere else after the incredibly long wait last time. I’m trying to decide when we’ll do gifts and cake?

DGS said, “Next week, Daddy is coming to watch me swim.” So we might have him there, too. I should check out the restaurant menus just to see which one has some kind of vegan food just in case.

I did get my house all cleaned, so now that's done for 2 weeks! I was telling DH that because I'll be leaving on Tuesday, so he'll have to clean up after himself now! He's not really very messy, but he doesn't like cleaning. He'd rather work on his things. He did finish cutting down the tangelo tree today except for the stump. He cut that off square and we're going to find a very colorful birdbath from Mexico to put on top of it. It's Talavera pottery - pottery that has a high gloss finish and very brightly colored.

I even cleaned one of my blinds that hadn't been cleaned in awhile. I have a desk that sits in front of that window, so it's not easily accessible. And my desk has a low hutch on it so it makes the desk that much higher. But I got a step stool and at times knelt on the desk to get at the blind. But at least that is done! I'm able to get at the other 2, but that one was always a pain, so it was pretty dusty.
It was warm today, but low humidity so it felt nice outside. We have a cool front coming in tonight and tomorrow's high is only 59 or 60.

Leslie - I used to make calendars for my mom every year either for her b-day (Nov. 27th) or else for Christmas of my DS and family. She just loved those calendars. She saved them all, so now I have them. They are fun to look back on and see how the kids have grown!
Someday, I hope to have a housekeeper! I used to clean for people myself. Glad your housekeeper will be there for you on Tuesday.
Hope you get thru your list of things.

Kate - I'm sure that is nice that you don't have to drive into Boston. I'm sure that is one busy city!
How long does your DGS's swim lessons last each week?
That steak does look mighty tasty! I looked on Amazon and the price of that is not unreasonable and from what I saw online, it looks like you can make a variety of things in it. Do you have any accessories? I think I saw you can buy different pots or tubs.

Church tomorrow, Bible study afterwards then I will come home and do laundry.

Have a great Sunday!

My apologies for not writing yesterday; I'm not even sure why I didn't but I was very tired and had a couple of naps.
We're having a cold weekend, but actually had sun for a while!

Mema - I'm glad the undecorating went so well, thanks to your efficiency!
That wall of pictures is really something! I'd like to do something similar here, but on a smaller scale. Once I decide what I want, I'll get my housekeeper to help me put the pictures up. I need to find more photos of my daughter - I don't have any displayed now, but would like to. I have a lot of pictures of my grandsons, and a beautiful wedding photo of my DS and DIL. I also have their wonderful calendar of family photos.

Kate - those cookers both sound wonderful!! What else do you cook in the Sous Vide besides steak? That is very impressive, how beautifully it does the steak!! I'm sure I would love an Instant Pot and get a lot of use out of it. I use my crockpot quite often, but have never used a pressure cooker - I've always been a little afraid of them. My girlfriend's mother had the top, or part of the top, blow off the cooker and someone could have been injured. I've never known anyone else who used one. I saw the Instant Pots on sale before Christmas when I had to replace my microwave; I think they were either a little above or a little below $100 which seems reasonable. I love the idea that meat can be browned in it before adding the rest of the ingredients, instead of using another pan!
I'm glad your DD was able to drop off your DGS this morning. I'm sure you've been having a good time with him today. Too bad you missed your meeting though.

Not much is new here. I'm continuing to work my way through my list of things to get done in my apartment. My housekeeper will be here on Tuesday, so I'm looking forward to seeing her, and getting the floors washed again!

I hope you're both enjoying your Saturdays.

DD is working today so we’ll have DGS here for the day. It’s nice that she drops him off here when she works so it saves us two trips into Boston to pick him up and drop him off.

DH has a meeting at church today so I'll be taking DGS to swim lessons. I'll miss my OA meeting this morning.

Mema – that’s a really nice arrangement of all the photos. I usually see them in a big rectangle. I like the diamond shape.

With the Sous Vide – the meat is held at the right temperature. For example a medium rare steak is held at 135 degrees. It doesn’t get any warmer so it doesn’t get any more cooked than medium rare. It can stay in the water bath for hours and stays medium rare. And you get the same degree of cooking through almost the whole steak rather than it being more done at the surface like traditional cooking on the grill.

I am trying out different things in the Instant Pot. Last week I tried a vegetarian dish of barley with butternut squash and mushrooms. The grains take only a fraction of the time as cooking on the stove. Yesterday I cooked a small turkey breast in it. It came out nice and moist with only a half hour of cooking. I think I’m going to like this.

We went to my FIL's today and I took a bunch of pictures of the "wall of pictures" my DH put up for his dad. It did turn out very nice! Here are just a few - The largest center picture was taken at my MIL's memorial service. Every child, grandchild and great-grand child was there! Then the 4 "corners" DH put pictures of his family and his brother and sister's families. So each sibling got a corner.

This one has my FIL in it -

And this one is their wedding picture - He was on leave from the Navy, the picture next to it was their cabin they had up North - only about 5 miles from us. Plus the 2 of them on their pontoon.

While we were visiting I walked over to the main building and saw 2 of the gals in the Personal Care section (that was the assisted living) where my mom was for a year. It was good to see them and they were so good to my mom. And they are putting in 3 more rooms for that section. They are making those rooms a little larger to accommodate couples. That doesn't happen too often, but it will be nice to have that when it does. After we got home, I didn't do much. Tonight we watched a Netflix DVD - Solace with Anthony Perkins. It was very good. Tomorrow I'm hoping to get my house cleaned.

Kate - So when you cooked your steak, did you leave it in the pot until you were ready to sear it? Do you just turn off the machine once the meat is cooked and leave your meat in there for awhile? That would be quite nice. My son taught me several years ago how to tell when steak is done on the grill - medium, med-well. I would say it works 98% of the time. But that is really a cool concept.
I had heard that an instant pot can do both crock pot and pressure cooking. I've never owned a pressure cooker and would have no idea how to do that. But if I had an instant pot, I'm sure I would be able to figure that out.
Tomorrow we're still warm - 79 for a high, but on Sunday only going to be 60 with a North breeze. So far it looks like there's a small chance for snow in MN next Friday. But that's a long time from now, so I'm sure that will change.

Leslie - Hope you had a good day!

Enjoy your Saturday!

Mema – sounds like all your organization paid off w/ an easy time un-decorating. That’s a good amount of steps you got w/ all the helping.

A lot of restaurants use several sous vide cookers for their steaks and meats. When someone orders a steak, they only need to pull one with the right level of “doneness” and sear the outsides.

I cooked one on Wednesday and it was so easy. I vacuum sealed it and put it in the pot in the late afternoon. Nearing dinner time I was free to concentrate on doing the veggies and salad. Then when all the sides were done, I pulled out the steak and browned it for 2-3 minutes and it was ready. And perfectly cooked, too. I’ve always had trouble getting steak done to the right level.

Leslie – I asked for the Instant Pot b/c it replaces both my crockpot and my pressure cooker. I have and use both of those but they are very old (from when we first got married). I particularly like the fact that this appliance has saute setting so you can brown the meat for a stew right in the pot and then add the veggies and liquid and switch to slow cooking.

The weather people are forecasting “snow showers” every few days in the 10 day forecast but no accumulations. I don’t miss the snow but I know we need the snow cover or we’ll be having another drought in the summer.

Un-decorating went very well. I had everything organized - boxes by the Nativity sets, boxes for garland, boxes for the wreaths and swags laid out. So people were able to figure it out pretty well. But I was walking all around helping everywhere! I walked over 11K steps in total today! I finally got a new battery for my fitbit - it's an older version. Doesn't go on my wrist, it is a clip-on type. At least now I can see how many steps I'm getting in everyday. Hopefully it will encourage me to keep walking!

I was a bit tired, though when I got home. I tried to take a nap, but only dozed for about 15 minutes then got up and did a few things around the house.

Tomorrow, we'll go over to DH's dad's tomorrow but first we'll stop at UPS so I can mail my 2 boxes.

I'm not sure why we have 2 leaders for our cardio dance, but the word is that the Zumba instructor would like to take it over eventually, but doesn't want to push the other woman out immediately. The other instructor is older, so she could maybe do our warm-up and cool down. I'm not completely certain what the plan is.

Leslie - on the brisket - we froze it right after we bought it (in 3 different pieces). So when my DH cooked it yesterday, it was cooked from raw. So now that it's been cooked, we froze the leftovers into 2 portions.

Kate - I had no idea what a Sous Vide cooker was so I looked it up online. What a neat little device! I had never even heard of it. You'll have to let us know how you like it. I have heard a lot of good things about the Instant Pot.

I have been checking the weather up in MN and so far it doesn't look like they'll be getting any snow - at least not for the first several days. The temps are in the 20's, so that's not really too bad for this time of year.

Well, better get to bed - it's getting late.

Happy Friday!!

Good morning, or afternoon - just noticed that it's after noon here. It's another very cold day here, and we got more new snow this morning.

Mema - I wonder too about you having the two instructors for the cardio dance - why not just one for the whole class?
That's wonderful that your DH made dinner! I love brisket. Is it OK to freeze it twice?
I hope that the church 'undecorating' goes well today!
I've heard that all of the shows you mentioned are good, but I almost never watch anything on TV.
Our Dollarama sounds like your Dollar General. I recently got a new ladle that was either $2 or $3, but even if there are things that are over $1, the prices are still good. I also like to get cards there; they are all $1.
I will be asking the maintenance man to replace that portion of baseboard since the glue didn't work. It's pretty ugly as it is.

Kate - your kitchen appliances sound interesting. I'll have to look up the Sous Vide cooker, but I have heard very good things about the Instant Pot. Would you say that it replaces a crockpot?
We are also likely to get a lot more snow in the next couple of months. I remember a big snowstorm in early April too, and the year I graduated from nursing school in Montreal, we got 11 inches of snow on May 10, which was the night of our formal graduation dance. A lot of the girls' dates couldn't get there; I just ruined my satin shoes which had been dyed pale blue to match my dress.
You're right that my muscles were being worked. I hope I can get to the classes both days next week.

I hope you're both having excellent Thursdays!

I had two kitchen appliances on my wish list for Christmas - a Sous Vide cooker and an Instant Pot. I've been having some fun trying them out. Pretty nifty, both of them. I used the instant pot to do a recipe for barley, mushrooms and butternut squash and then a batch of wheat berries for breakfasts. I used the Sous Vide cooker for our steak last night.

Mema – is the plan for the two instructors to co-teach like that? Or is the original teacher getting “trained” to do a better job?

Hope your “un-decorating” goes smoothly and quickly.

I like having things in the freezer for those times that I don’t want to cook or don’t have time. For example, I took stew out of the freezer on the day we did the car run.

Leslie – we’ve had a few morning w/ dustings of snow but nothing significant so far. But then, we do get most of our snow in January and February and it’s only the beginning of the month, so we’ve got a ways to go.

Sorry you’re sore from you class but that does mean that your muscles are being worked and will grow stronger b/c of it.

Met with my sponsor this morning and this afternoon I went up for the Cardio dance. The good instructor was there for the first half again. And all the women who were there loved her, too. I just got to the point for the 2nd half of following along as best I could and had fun! It was a good workout.

And DH made dinner tonight. We had another portion of brisket in the freezer so he made that. This time he cooked it in the crock pot with potatoes and carrots. And he cooked it a LONG time. Turned out good. We barely ate half of the portion, so I put it in the frig and DH will cut it up how he wants and freeze 2 more portions.

Tomorrow will be an early one for me. I've got to pick up the goodies for the church un-decorating and I want to be there long before everyone else. But hopefully, we'll have more people than we did when we put everything up so it won't take too long.

Tonight I'm watching all the "Chicago" shows that are on - Med, Fire, PD. They're all new now. Last night I watched New Amsterdam. That was a good one.

Leslie - Dollar General has merchandise that is more than just $1. Dollar Tree - everything is $1.00! Everything!! It's really a great store. I get all my cards there for b-days, anniversary's, etc., batteries, just all kinds of things. So, really there is quite a bit of difference between the 2 stores. Dollar General and Family Dollar stores are very similar.
And yes, I'm happy with my haircut.
I'm glad you are going to have maintenance fix your baseboard. Maybe that's not the best thing for you to try and do yourself????
I'm glad you didn't have to go out in the cold and blowing snow. I hope it warms up for you a bit.
Good for you in eliminating so many emails!!

Kate - I've heard of that show "God Friended Me" but never have watched it. Maybe I'll have to check it out.
I hope your sore muscles feel better. I was expecting to feel a bit sore today from Monday's workout, but surprisingly enough I wasn't sore. I'll see how I feel tomorrow! LOL
Glad you were able to help your DD out with her car situation. I'm sure it did feel overwhelming for her right then. She's had an awful lot on her plate the last couple of weeks.

Have a great day!!

Mema - You certainly are keeping busy!! That would wear me right out. I can be busy for a day, but not really for 2 days in a row. I admire all your energy. Is there much difference between the two 'dollar' stores you went to? I hope you're happy with your haircut. I'm going to need one of those soon.
I hope you're having a good day today, and you'll be busy tomorrow too!
Good idea to send things to MN to arrive while you are there.
There are still some kids out of school today due to icy roads, but most are back.
I did do about half the things on my list yesterday; I had to quit because my back started really hurting from moving a chair, and bending over to try to glue the baseboard back to the wall. That didn't work so now I'll ask our maintenance guy to replace that part of the baseboard. It wasn't visible before because I used to have a cabinet in front of it, but now it's the first thing one sees when coming in the apartment.
I'm glad you enjoyed Ozark! I have watched the most recent season of The Ranch. It was different without 'Rooster'. I won't try Arrested Development until I'm done with Ozark.

Kate - I was also a little sore after Monday's exercise class, and then it got worse while I tried to get things done here. Today I was too sore to get to the class.
Your fenced-in dog run sounds ideal. I don't blame you for not walking the dogs when it's apt to be slippery out.
I think my grandsons also get a week off in February, and another one in April.
I'm glad everything worked out with your DD's car! I can imagine that her license plates were difficult to deal with though.

We have been having some blowing snow this morning, and the next couple of days are supposed to be very cold. I think it feels like about 0 today with the wind chill. I'm glad I'm not going to be out.
I eliminated about 100 old emails from my inbox! Now I need to work on the ones that are left. The old ones were all things I meant to read, but they are no longer timely.

I hope you're both having a wonderful Wednesday.

Mema – sounds like a busy day w/ all those stops. And a busy week to come. Enjoy your Zumba this afternoon.

I’ve been watching a new show “God Friended Me” and I really like it. My DS used to watch The Wire but my DH said I probably would not like it so I haven’t looked at it yet.

I went to yoga class yesterday and I can tell it’s been 3 weeks. I couldn’t get my palms down to the floor in forward fold and I’m feeling a lot of soreness in my muscles today.

Leslie – I’ve had friends who have done the Whole 30 and I agree w/ you that it’s too restrictive for me. I do a lot of veggies and meat but I wouldn’t want to totally exclude the dairy, grain and legumes.

I have DS’s dogs 3 or 4 days a week. When the weather is decent, I take them to the park to get a good run. I told my DS that when the sidewalks got icy, I would not be walking his dogs. Two of them are not good about walking on leash – they pull – and I won’t risk it. We have a fenced-in dog run that is about 55 ft. long and 12 - 15 ft. wide.

Our schools all opened either Wednesday or Thursday last week. They don’t get as long a break. But they do get a week off toward the end of February so I guess it all evens out.

When DD called on Monday she was stressing out about how she could manage to pick up the car and return the rental. She and DH were talking about all the possible ways it could work when I got on the line and told her it would be simplest if she just returned the rental and either got a ride or took an Uber for the 2 miles to get home. DH and I would go pick up the car and drive it to her apartment and leave the keys in her home.

And it was indeed a simple matter. It took us a few hours of driving w/ the traffic but no hitches or delays other than getting her mangled license plates flatten out enough to screw onto the new car.

A very busy day today. I had lots of errands to run - just stores like Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Walmart, the bank, the Bread Outlet store and got my hair cut, and then had my meeting squeezed in between all of that! emoticon

Tomorrow I meet with my sponsor and then will go up for the cardio dance again in the afternoon. I did enjoy that - well, mostly the first half. emoticon

I have a busy rest of the week, too. Thursday we "un" decorate the church. I have to stop and get fruit and pastry for everyone and I try and get there at least an hour before everyone so I can pull out all the boxes and get everything organized. So that means getting there about 8 am. On Friday, I'm going with my DH over to see his dad. DH finished the "wall" of pictures for his dad and I have to take pictures to email out to DH's siblings and kids. But before we get there, I want to stop at the UPS store to mail 2 medium sized boxes of stuff that was my mom's up to my DS's house. It will get there while I'm there so I'll be able to bring the boxes in right away instead of them sitting there on their front stoop. It's stuff that I'll bring back to WI in the spring, but just wouldn't have room in our car for all of it.

Leslie - oh, boy sounds like you really had a mess up there with the freezing rain. I'm sure the kids didn't mind being off another day!! emoticon I'm glad you didn't lose your power. Up by us, most of our power lines are still above ground and if there's freezing rain, it can sometimes freeze on those lines and get so heavy it breaks them.
Were you able to get some of the things crossed off your to-do list?
I'm glad you had a good talk with your DS.
I watched Ozark - it was very good!! Did you know The Ranch has another season? I started watching a couple of the episodes last week. I'll have to get back to that. I just love that show! Arrested Development never really interested me and I'm not sure I've heard of The Wire. Will have to look that up. You'll have to let me know what you think of Arrested Development.

Kate - Was your DD's car ready for her? I hope so.
Nice that you were able to get a break from dog sitting today and go to your yoga class.
I'm with you when it comes to freezing rain - that is the worst because it is so dangerous. I'm glad I don't have to drive in that kind of weather anymore.

Have a great Wednesday!

Our freezing rain continued, and this morning all of the rural school buses were cancelled; the kids just went back to school yesterday after the Christmas break! Some people were without power, but we were OK here.

Mema - I'm glad you could walk to your Bible study.
How exciting that you have a new leader at the cardio dance. Is the old leader staying too? Having a good leader makes a big difference!
It sounds as if you will have a busy day today. I have a long list for today, but if I do half the things on it, I will be happy.

Kate - I wasn't able to cook what I had planned to have on Sunday because I was so engrossed in reading; I had a frozen dinner. I will have the chicken dinner tonight.
You really keep the dogs a lot! Do you need to walk them, or do you have a fenced yard for them?
I hate freezing rain too!
I hope your yoga class goes well today, and enjoy the shopping. I miss going to grocery stores and seeing all the produce.
I hope that your DD's new car really is ready, and there will be no problems with it!

My son called last night and we had a good chat. He and my DIL are doing the Whole 30 diet for January. I had looked that up in the past, but decided it would be difficult for me to follow, and I would have a hard time having all the meat/fish and veggies on hand all the time. The diet is no grains, no dairy, no legumes - not easy!
We discussed Netflix. I am watching Ozark now, which he had told me about previously. Last night he said they were watching Arrested Development and The Wire. Unfortunately I can't get the latter show here, but I will check out the other.

Enjoy Tuesday!

Mema – I love the fact that I can walk to church and to my OA meetings.

Hooray for a new Zumba teacher that is good. It’s a great workout and lots of fun when it’s done well.

Leslie – I can get lost in a book that way and forget to stop. It’s bad when it gets late at night and I want to keep reading instead of sleeping.

I usually keep the dogs 4 days/week on Mon – Thurs. Today I’ll be getting a break b/c DS’s GF will be at his house working on her computer and will watch them.

Nice to have exercise classes resuming again after the holidays. I hate freezing rain more than most other types of weather. It’s so dangerous.

Back to yoga class for me today. I haven’t been since the vertigo bout the week before Christmas. And then grocery shopping. We’re out of most of our fresh stuff – fruit and veggies.

The replacement car for DD is supposedly ready. We’ll pick it up this afternoon and take it to her apartment since she’s got to get the rental car returned near her home and then she’ll be w/o transportation. Fingers crossed that there won’t be any hang-ups.

I was able to walk up to my Bible study, but then one of the gals offered me a ride home. I took it only because I was going to go up to the clubhouse later in the afternoon for cardio dance. One of the gals at study told me there was a new leader! The new leader had been a certified Zumba instructor, so I thought I would give it another chance. She was good!! She kicked our butts! She did the first half of the session and then the old leader did the last half - there was a noticeable difference. I'm planning on going back on Wednesday - it was fun.

Tomorrow I have my meeting, and I have a lot of errands to run as well. And in the afternoon I get my haircut.

Leslie - It's so nice to get lost in a good book.
I'm glad you got to your exercise class and that the instructor was better. That really makes a difference, doesn't it?
I'm sorry you were having such bad weather - did all the rain freeze overnight? That would really be a mess.

Kate - Sounds like you really had a nice dinner with your DH.
I think our church could use some "vision" planning. Our new pastor is very ambitious and eager, but I think he lacks a bit of direction. I feel like we're kind of all over the place - doing this, trying that, but not really having a plan.

Hope you have a great Tuesday!

My apologies for not posting yesterday. I was reading such a good book, I started into it early in the day and read until I was done, at about dinnertime.

Mema - Congrats on getting your house all cleaned. I will do my dusting tomorrow, and a week from tomorrow my housekeeper will be back, so I'm looking forward to that.
That was a long marriage for your in-laws. I'm sorry about the problems their kids have/had.
I hope it was nice enough today for you to walk to the Bible study.
That 'ice castle' really sounds amazing! I've only seen the little ice huts.
I'm not sure if I've ever had walleye. Around here, it's mostly whitefish, salmon, and trout. I do love most fish now; I wasn't very fond of it when I was a kid because I always seemed to get a lot of bones.
I was just remembering early in my first marriage, when cans of tuna were 3/$1!!

Kate - I love the 'Ode to the Spell Checker' - ha!
Thank you both for telling me about the fake candles. I also have a few white tapers for power outages - I guess I will keep those.
I think fasting for 2 days and having only your morning coffee and water would be very difficult. I'm sure I couldn't do it, and probably shouldn't with all my medication! I guess I could 'fast' from Netflix, and that I could do for 2 or 3 days, but not for all of Lent!
I'm glad your DD was finally able to buy the car! It sounds like you and your DH both had busy days!
Your anniversary dinner sounded wonderful! I'm sure you'll enjoy the leftovers today.
It sounds as if you'll be having a busy week. Will you be keeping the dogs every day now? I hope your meeting this morning was good.

Our exercise classes resumed today, and the instructor was much better than she had been before the holidays. Thank goodness!
We are getting a lot of freezing rain now. I had a delivery from the pharmacy and the driver said the roads are terrible. I'm glad not to be driving today!

Have a good Monday.

Leslie - hope you had a good day reading.

Mema – sounds like you had a productive day. Enjoy your Bible study.

I’ve never been ice fishing. It sounds like fun to do it in such a comfortable way – sitting inside! All my fishing has been in streams and lakes. Nice that you were able to give your DS a good plan for the pizza.

The church is in the midst of “vision” planning. We were kind of stuck in a rut w/ the old pastor the last few years he was here and then we had 2 years of transition. Now we want to focus on where we want to head and how to best get there.

I did go out and buy a card for my DH although I forgot on my way to church. I went out in the afternoon while he was watching football.

We went out to dinner to celebrate our anniversary. It was a very nice dinner. We started w/ a glass of Prosecco and a small flatbread for an appetizer. I had a grilled rainbow trout, roasted root vegetables and Brussels Sprouts. I didn't have room for all of it and brought half home for today.

This week we're really back into normal schedule w/ the dogs arriving soon and all my usual weekly plans. OA meeting this morning and I'll be back in my classes at the Y tomorrow.

I did all my laundry today and finished my Bible study for tomorrow. Hopefully it will be nice enough that I can walk up to Bible study. It was nice today, except a bit on the windy side.

I talked with my DS today. He and his friend were taking his friends "ice castle" up to Mille Lacs Lake in northern MN to fish for the day and then keep it up there so if they want to run up on an evening it will be ready for them. He called because this fish house (ice castle) has a propane stove and they have tried to cook pizza's in it, but it always burns on the bottom and he wondered what he could do differently. There are 2 racks so DH told him to cover the lower rack with tin foil and then bake it at a lower temperature as propane burns hotter than gas and it's a lot smaller than a regular oven. He texted me back this evening that it worked for them! His friend's ice castle is like an RV trailer only it has holes at different places in the floor to drill thru the ice. It has a toilet, but it's basically a stool and you put a plastic bag underneath the seat. (no plumbing out on a frozen lake!) But it has a booth table and bunk beds, so it's rather nice for ice fishing.

I asked him if he catches any walleye to bring them home and freeze them so we can have them while I'm up there. Walleye is excellent! And he knows how to cook them, too.

Kate - That fast does sound interesting - was there a particular reason for doing it?
Did you have a nice anniversary? Were you able to buy your card?
I'm glad your DD did get her car even though she can't pick it up until next week. That's a load off her mind, I'm sure. And nice that they are going to do the fixing and inspection and registration.

Leslie - Hope you had an enjoyable day!

Happy Monday!

Mema – congrats on getting your house all cleaned. Too bad they never do stay that way – LOL.

There’s been a continuing controversy of “nature vs. nurture” as far as kids go. There are genetics that come into play as well as outside events. I don’t know that parents need to carry all the blame for how their kids come out. Being the parent of adopted kids, I can see how much of their personality came from their birth parents and I can see some influence of some other events in their lives that had a profound effect.

And then, too, our minds tend to hold onto the happy memories and forget the unhappy ones. I expect your FIL remembers more of the good times. And I’m sure there were many over 73 years. And only the minority part of those years were spent raising kids.

Leslie – the fake candles do work on batteries but I don’t know if they would really be a good substitute for a power failure. I don’t think they put out as much light as a real candle. I do keep a stash of plain white tapers in case the power goes out.

The fast was the first one that church has had so it was kind of open. It was left up to each person’s conscience what they felt they could do. My DH and I chose to do 2 days instead of 3 and we did drink our morning coffee. There were also suggestions of “fasting” from other things like TV, etc. if you had a condition that you couldn’t fast from food. It was kind of like the idea of giving up something during Lent – something that will focus your attention on God every time you skip it.

It's my anniversary today. I forgot to buy a card for my DH. Wow! I will try to pick one up on the way to church. Yesterday turned into such a busy day.

DH and DD did get the car purchased. It took forever to do all the things that needed to be done with the paperwork as well as driving it to our mechanic to have it checked out. It needs a bit of work which the company will do and they will do the 'running' to get the car inspected and registered. So she won't actually have it until next week sometime. DH had a meeting scheduled for 1 in the afternoon and had to keep moving it so he ended up doing that from 3 - 5 PM. I went to my Bible Study, my OA meeting and did all the laundry.

36.5 pounds gone, 17.5 more pounds is my 2020 goal.

I had another productive day - got my house all cleaned. Love the feeling of a nice clean house. And we had leftovers for supper so I didn't have to spend a lot of time cooking. emoticon Tomorrow I need to get caught up on my Bible study for Monday in between doing laundry.

Leslie - Most of the candles I've seen do run on batteries. I buy all my batteries at Dollar Tree. I use a lot of batteries over the Christmas holiday. I have lighted candlesticks in the windows and battery operated lights in 4 different places. I use a lot of tea light candles, too. Those also operate on battery's, but those are the round flat type. My candlesticks and other lights usually use AA or AAA. And those are also on a timer - usually 6-8 hours on and then off for 16-18 hours. Walmart does carry flameless candles as well as Amazon. There are a lot of different one's out there. Some even have remote controls!
And yes, I am starting to get excited about my trip to MN.
My in laws were married 73 years! My FIL also says he had the perfect marriage. Seems a bit hard to believe when one of your sons (my DH) suffered severe anxiety/depression/panic attacks, another son is an alcoholic and a daughter who has an eating disorder. Somehow I have a hard time believing a perfect marriage could produce such results. But, that's just my opinion.

Kate - emoticon
Thanks for showing that picture of the bike. I have never seen one like that before!
So glad your DD can get her car. I hope it all went well.
What was the reason your church called a fast? And is it a complete fast? I've never done that before.

Happy SONday!

Mema - good for you for getting so much done yesterday! I could probably get rid of more candles too, but want some in case the power is off. I'm not familiar with fake candles - do they work on batteries? Would Walmart have them?
It's a cloudy day here today, but relatively warm.
I'm sure you are getting excited about your trip to MN!

Kate - thanks for the photo of the bike, but it does look odd.
Spell check doesn't work if you use another real word, spelled correctly - I have done that too, written hear for here, also son/sun. I usually catch it before I post or send, but not always.
I am in the Library To Go program, and can keep books for 6 weeks, unless it is an inter-library loan; if it is, I only have it for 3 weeks. It would make sense to have shorter return dates for popular books.
I really hope your DD likes the car today, and will then have it instead of the rental car.
Wow, happy anniversary for tomorrow! If I had stayed married to my first husband, we would have had 54 years in December. I also heard about a/the couple who had 70 years!
I have tried to fast in the past, but got too weak. Were you able to have anything besides water? I get cold too when I'm hungry.

I hope you both have good days!

Mema – I have OTC sleeping pills that I take mostly when I travel and have trouble sleeping in a strange bed but I will occasionally take them at home when I have had a few sleepless night in a row. I usually take ½ or even 1/3 of a tablet.

I should drop off my candles at Goodwill or someplace, too. I have been given a number of them over the years and rarely use any. The fake candles look so real now w/ a flicker and everything, it’s hardly worth using real ones.

Leslie – I thought that peddles looked wrong but spell checker didn’t pick it up. LOL - same sound but different word – pedals, of course!

Our library has shorter return dates for books that are new or in high demand. Glad you were able to get it returned w/o having to call your volunteer.

Today my DD may, at last, get a replacement car. It’s been a hassle just getting to see it. She left a deposit on Thursday so they would know she was seriously interested. I hope it is a car she likes so she doesn’t feel pressured to get it anyway.

Tomorrow is our anniversary. Forty-six years! Somehow the anniversary years make me feel my age more than my birthdays do. My mind has this idea that only really old people can have been married for going on 50 years. But then I was reading about a couple who celebrated their 70th anniversary so I guess we have a ways to go.

We’ve had an interesting couple days here. Our church called a 3 day fast. My DH said that since we were not used to fasting we should just do 2 days and we did that Thursday and Friday. It wasn’t too bad although we were both headachy and felt cold, especially yesterday. After the worship service last night, we had soup and crackers to break the fast and went straight to bed.

Busy day - it took me most of the day to get my Christmas decorations all down and put away. The house looks so dark now. It was a big job, but glad it's done. I also dropped off my load of stuff for Goodwill (mostly candles and cookbooks this time). I got rid of so many candles because usually it's too warm to use them and DH doesn't really like real candles burning so I started using all those fake candles, which now days look pretty real.

I didn't get a lot of the rest of the house cleaned (baths, tile floors) so I'll finish that up tomorrow.

Leslie - I understand how one little thing can throw off your whole day. Been there, done that. LOL
I'm glad you were able to get your errands done that you wanted to. Glad to hear you received your other books from Amazon.
We had sunshine all day today and it was a lovely day, although I was only out for a short time when I went to Goodwill. Glad you had some sun, too.

Kate - I slept so much better last night - although I did take one of my pills - I could have taken half because I slept in a little too long. Oh, well. Didn't hurt anything.
I will be flying up to MN on Tuesday, the 15th. I think I leave about noon and get there about 3 pm. So it's a nice quick flight.
Sorry to hear the car wasn't available for your DD. That is frustrating.
Glad your able to "dog sit" all night for your DS - that's a big help to him for sure.

Enjoy your day!

Sorry for not posting yesterday. I was only out for a little over an hour, but it threw my whole day off, and I still have a lot of catching up to do. I did get my DGS's book, card and money order sent off, and we returned 2 books to the library. For some reason I had 1 book that was due back on the 18th, but the rest aren't due until the 30th. I didn't want to call my volunteer to return that 1 book if I had the chance to return it myself. The other book I returned was Fear by Bob Woodward, which I had to wait quite a while for, so I thought that as long as I was done with it, it might as well be passed on to the next person on the list!
The 3 books I ordered with my Amazon gift card on Christmas arrived today!

Mema - I'm glad you were able to meet with your sponsor. I understand the confusion about the days of the weeks around the holidays!
Good for you for getting back to tracking food. I find that too time-consuming, but I would also like to lose 10-15 lbs.
I also always had Christmas decorations up until January 6th, like Kate. This year, I only have the one angel to put away.
It was just below freezing when I was out yesterday, and it's just above freezing today. The sun is out today, although it may rain or snow later. I'm glad it will be warming up for you, after your cold night!
If your DGD could try out her new bike in the house, that would be great.

Kate - The bikes without pedals sound really strange!
My sister shares her birthday with one of our great-nephews. At the time, my sister was on the 'outs' with some of the family, so it seemed ironic that the boy was born on her birthday!
I'm really sorry about the car situation for your DD - how frustrating!! Is there another Mazda somewhere that might be ready now?
I'm sure the dogs will like their time with you!

Sonflowergammy - welcome!! Do you by chance have another name we could call you? I like simple things, for my simple mind!
Where do you live? I'm in Ontario, Canada.
I have been in and out of AA. I'm sober, but not actually attending meetings now.
It would be great if you start posting with us!

I hope you are all enjoying your Fridays!

Sonflowergammy – welcome to the chat thread. We would love to have another person posting here. I came to this group through OA (OverEaters Anonymous) rather than AA. Different addiction, same 12 Steps.

Leslie – were you able to get all your errands done even though your friend had another commitment?

Mema – sorry you weren’t able to sleep well. 39 is pretty chilly. When do you leave for MN?

The trip to look at the car was a bust – they still didn’t have it on the lot and it hadn’t had the work done on it that it needed. Why, Oh, why do they list a car for sale that isn’t yet available?

I’m pretty much back into normal winter schedule mode. DGS doesn’t have swim lessons tomorrow so he won’t be here, but the dogs will be b/c DS has a wedding to go to on Saturday. He’s driving his GF down early Saturday morning and they’ll come back Sunday. We’ve only kept the dogs overnight a few times, but they seem to do well here.

I had a terrible time sleeping last night, so I put off taking down my Christmas decorations until tomorrow. Instead I did take a nap and went thru more cookbooks to give away. I'll drop off my things tomorrow and while DH is at his dad's I'll take down my Christmas decorations and clean the house.

It is going down to 39 here tonight!! Brrrrr......that's pretty chilly for us down here. But starting tomorrow, we'll have the sun back and start our warm up. Back into the upper 70's low 80's next week.

Sonflowergammy - you can jump in any time you'd like. Just tell us a little about yourself and go from there. My username - Mema comes from my step-grandchildren who call me that, but I have 2 other grandchildren (a boy and a girl) from my son who call me May. My DH and I spend our winters in deep south Texas (Rio Grande Valley area) and we spend our summers in Northern WI. I have been sober for 4+ years now. My son just celebrated his 1 year this past April. My DH has 3 children (1 son, 2 daughters - all married) and I have the one son who is also married. So that's a little about me! Usually Kate, Leslie and I chat here most every day.

Kate - Hmmm - I've never seen bikes w/out wheels - that would be interesting. The balancing is what takes the most practice so I guess that would make sense.
I know what you mean about regular activities disrupted. Will be nice to get back to my regular schedule next week, but then the following week is when I go to MN - so that will take care of my "regular schedule" again! LOL
Where I put my Christmas tree is over in a corner in our dining room and it lights up that whole area and when it's down, it's so dark over there - I love all the lights!
Were you able to get your church work done?
Did you DD get her car?

Leslie - hope you are having a good day and got your errands finished.

Happy Friday everyone!

Mema – my cut and low-lights looks pretty much like it did before. It was just covering some of the gray and trimming up the ends.

Glad you could meet w/ your sponsor. I was having a lot of mental confusion about the day of the week, too. Most of my regular activities weren’t in place and w/ the holidays, DH off work and DGS here, I kept thinking Monday was Tuesday.

I’ll be taking down decorations this weekend. I like to leave them up until the 12th day of Christmas which is Sunday. I was talking w/ my hairdresser and she mentioned how bare the house seems after all the decorations are put away.

I’ve seen some bikes for little kids that don’t even have peddles. They can just push along w/ their feet and then pick their feet up and glide along. Teaches them balance w/o having to manage the peddles at the same time.

Leslie – both my DGS and my DS’s birthdays are the 17th. When my DD announced she was pregnant and due in January, he jokingly said “You can’t have the baby on MY birthday.” But she did and I think he enjoys sharing the day w/ his nephew.

Hope your errands today go smoothly. Glad the weather will be a bit more temperate for being out.

Sorry your special dinner turned out disappointing. But the snap peas sound lovely.

I'll be walking over to the church today to so some year end/ start of the new year stuff. I need to do all the updates on the computer for keeping track of people's giving.

DH will meet DD and they'll hopefully get her a new car. I know it will take another day or so of running around to get the registration, etc. But it would be nice if she could start the new week w/ a car.

I did meet with my sponsor today. She saw my text, but thought yesterday was Sunday and so she didn't respond right away! It was a good meeting with her.

DH and I went for an early dinner (4:30) to Cici's Pizza. I got an email with a free buffet w/purchase good for today only. I calculated out ahead of time what I was going to eat and stuck with it. I'm trying to get back into tracking my food on this website. I've got so many foods already in my favorites, that it's really just a matter of finding it and clicking on it, so there's really no excuse not to. That way, at least I can see how much I'm eating. So, baby steps for right now. I would like to lose 10 lbs., but would be happy with 7.

Tomorrow I may start taking down my Christmas decorations. I was commenting to DH on our way home from the restaurant that it's so festive looking when driving to see the different colored lights on homes and then when they're taken down, everything seems a bit drab. It would be much more festive and fun if people left their outside lights on a lot longer - starting in the late fall and thru spring. Basically when it gets dark so early in the evenings. Oh, well....

Leslie - I'm sorry your New Year's meal was a disappointment for you.
Was a bit warmer for you when you ran your errands today? Don't you usually have a library volunteer who comes to get your books?
Blue sky and sunshine do make a difference when it's cold outside. It's been a bit gray here, but supposed to be sunny by Friday. We'll have a brief warm-up Sat/Sun - 79 and 81, but then cool again.

Kate - This is DGD's first bike. I don't know if it has training wheels or not. I guess I will see when I get up there. But it's going to be a bit hard for her to ride just yet - unless they let her try it out in their basement. Their basement is full width of their house - their house is much wider than it is in length and it has a cement floor, so she could do a bit of it down there to practice I suppose.
Would love to see a picture of your new cut and color!
It is nice that your DH could go and pick up your DGS and give your DD a good day of rest. I think she probably needed that.

Have a Thankful Thursday!

We actually have a bit of blue sky this morning although it's been very cold this morning, feeling like -21C. It will be warmer later, and for the next 2 days, which is good because my friend will be taking me out tomorrow. We'll only have time to do my 2 important errands: returning library books and mailing the gift etc. for my older GS's birthday. There won't be time for lunch because Diane has an out-of-town appointment at noon. Oh well, we'll have a good lunch next time we go out!

Mema - I'm really glad you were able to talk to your DS. I can imagine that putting together the bicycle was time-consuming!
I'm glad he was going to see Bohemian Rhapsody with his dad. I've heard it's very good. I hope you and DH enjoy it too.
Going through cookbooks is something I keep thinking of doing but haven't done yet. I know I have several I could give away, and there are some I only use for one or two recipes I could write out. I also have a recipe box, stuffed with old recipes from my mum, and my first MIL. I really don't want to get rid of those, and like to keep them in the original handwriting too.
Did you connect with your sponsor? I hope you can get together today.
We didn't have any fireworks here.
My steak and mushrooms were rather a disappointment. The steak had a sort of gritty texture, and not much flavour, and the mushrooms were almost 'over the hill'. They did taste all right. I didn't finish the dinner, partly because I'd had too many sugar snap peas a couple of hours earlier, with Renee's Caesar dressing. Your dinner sounded great - I love chicken and sweet potatoes!

Kate - you really did have some warm weather! It sounds as if the roads will indeed be messy with the snow and rain.
I'm sure your DD absolutely needed yesterday off after all her hard work!
It's good your DH could pick up your DGS, and I'm glad you all had a good time, but I'm sorry about the very slow service at lunch. I'm sure your DS and his GF were right about the cause of that!
Whose birthdays are 'their birthday', your DS and DGS?
I remember playing air hockey years ago, but it was just a game for 2 people. I'm glad your DGS was able to redeem his tickets for toys and candy - that sounds good too.
I hope you enjoy your hair appointment today, and I hope you're happy with the results! It's good that your DH is flexible and able to be with your DGS today while you're away. It sounds like it will be a busy day, with your 'granddogs' too!

I hope you both have wonderful Wednesdays!

Mema – I did that w/ my cookbooks a few years ago. I should do it again b/c I still have some books that I use for only one or two recipes. I have most of my recipes in a couple of 3 ring binders w/ sheet protectors. I like that I can just snap out the one recipe I want and the sheet protectors keep them from getting food spills.

Assembling things ALWAYS takes longer than expected. Does your DGD know how to ride a bike yet? Or is this her first one?

Leslie – I was in bed early for New Year’s, too. DGS was only wearing a light jacket yesterday b/c it was around 50 but it’s going to be below freezing today. They’re talking about some snow showers coming in overnight so tomorrow morning is going to be a bit messy w/ snow and then rain showers.

DD really needed the day off yesterday so she didn’t bring DGS up for his trip to the arcade. DH picked him up and we met up w/ DS and his GF. It was a fun time although lunch was extremely slow at this place. DS works as a bartender and his GF’s family owns a restaurant so they were talking about why things were so slow. Their best guess was too many cooks and servers called out “sick” on New Years Day. DS said he’d buy DGS another gift card to go again on their birthday in 2 weeks.

The arcade is called Dave and Buster’s. It’s a chain of arcades for grown ups and kids. More sophisticated than the Chucky Cheese places we used to take the kids when they were little. The hit of the day was the 4 way air hockey game. DGS, DH, DS and his GF played while I watched. DGS wanted to play a 3rd time but he had run out of “tokens” on his card. He had earned a lot of “tickets” so he redeemed them in a shop for a couple of small toys and some candy.

My DGS will be here again today. I hadn’t expected he would still be here so I scheduled a hair appointment. I’m getting foil low-lights and a cut so it will be a long one. DH will be taking another day off work to watch him. DS will be back at work so the dogs will be here today, too. He worked from home last week and Monday.

I'm starting to go thru my collection of cookbooks! I have some of my mom's that I'll keep, and some "church" cookbooks, but I may go thru the other one's and any recipe's that look good, I'll cut out.

I also talked with my DS this evening. He had a nice day - although he put together a bicycle that DGD got for Christmas and it took him a bit longer than he expected! Isn't that the way it usually goes??? LOL He was on his way to meet his dad - his dad was taking him to see Bohemian Rhapsody movie - about the band Queen. DH and I have that on our Netflix list. My DH was a drummer in his younger years and has a wide variety of tastes in music.

Tomorrow I should be meeting with my sponsor. I did text her earlier today, but haven't gotten a response. I'll try again.

Then I think on Thursday, I'll take my Christmas decorations down.

Leslie - DH and I went outside just before midnight last night and watched all the fireworks! They were all around us.
Did you make your steak and mushrooms today? We had baked chicken thighs and baked sweet potatoes.

Kate - Oh, that is so awful about what happened to your DD. I just feel for her - all that work. What a disappointment for her.
Did you take your DGS to the arcade? Was it a place with all kinds of games for kids?
I loved the quote you put at the bottom of your post from yesterday!

Have a great day!

Happy New Year, to both of you and your families!

Mema - I'm glad the enchiladas were a hit. Your toast sounds good too. Were you up for midnight? I was in bed before 9 pm then up before 4 this morning, so I greeted the new year then. I did not watch anything special on TV last night.
Well, at least we agree on the B in BLTs, haha!
I haven't tried dancing since my son's wedding in 2001, and I was awful, which was rather shocking to me since I used to be a good dancer when I was younger.

Kate - that is truly awful that after all that work, your DD missed her deadline! How frustrating!! And, having to re-create the budget data sounds very irritating too! I really hope she can relax for today at least.
I'm sorry she also has longer to wait to check out the car she thinks she wants.
I hope your DGS enjoys the arcade today - I'm sure he will!
It's much colder today than it was yesterday, and I keep hearing the plows go by. I don't think there's really a lot of snow yet though.

I may have my dinner quite early today - I'm really looking forward to it! emoticon

Have a wonderful first day of the New Year!

Mema – my DH has never been one to dance. He’s got a good sense of rhythm and is quite musical as far as playing instruments and singing, but he’s too self-conscious to actually move his feet to the music.

Leslie – the steak sounds lovely. I love mushrooms w/ my steak.

We spent a quiet New Year’s Eve and went to bed early. We were both feeling quite tired for some reason.

Today we are going to try taking DGS to a local arcade kind of place. DS bought DGS a gift card for the place. I’m not sure what kind of games and such are there but I hope DGS has fun.

The place that has the car DD wants to look at won’t have it ready until Thursday so she’s still in the rental car.

She got a huge amount of data (over 500 cases) entered into the computer but didn’t realize she had to do a couple of separate “clicks” to put an electronic signature on each one so she missed her deadline. Very heartbreaking after all her efforts over the last month to get it done.
