We had our enchilada's by candlelight tonight! And had a toast to a new, fun, exciting, fulfilling and enlightening New Year! DH had wine and I had raspberry lemonade in my wine glass! He thought it was a nice dinner. Then he went to his meeting and I stayed in and watched New Year's Rockin' Eve on TV. I've watched that for about the last 10 years or so! We used to go up to the clubhouse for their New Year's dance, but DH couldn't do much dancing - a couple of slow dances and that's it for him. He knows how, but now he can't even do that any more, so we'll watch a movie or each do our own thing.

The fireworks have been going off now since about 9:00. At midnight, it will sound like the 4th of July up North!

Leslie - Actually when I make BLT's, I only have BL's! I don't care for tomatoes, so I just have the lettuce and bacon. I've been eating them that way since I was a child.
Your New Year's meal sounds delicious! I love mushrooms with my steak.

Kate - I do know what you mean about having "good" tomatoes. My DH would probably agree with you. I think down here he usually buys Roma tomatoes. Those are the best for down here. I know they don't have tomatoes down here like the one's up North (even tho' I don't eat them).
I hope your DD was able to get all of her "year end" work done w/out too much stress. Was she able to see the other Mazda today?

Happy New Year!

Mema - I'm glad your church reading went well!
I'm happy for you that you were able to have a day of rest after that.
I used to make enchiladas quite often when I was with my long-time partner. I love enchiladas! I don't get around to making them just for myself though. I love BLTs too, but I usually have just BTs, lol. I rarely have lettuce for sandwiches. My special New Year's meal will be steak and mushrooms, but I'll have those tomorrow. I got an exceptionally good deal on a small strip loin - it was only $4.13!! I have steak rarely, so I'm looking forward to it!
I used to buy 'pork steaks' in the US, but don't think I've seen them here. Thanks for telling me about that meal.
My apartment building is one of quite a few managed by the county - it's subsidized housing, so I could call the housing office. I doubt if they're back to 'normal' yet though, with the holidays.

Kate - I hope it works out for your DD to get a car today or tomorrow!
I'm glad you also got your toilet unplugged! At least you have another toilet.
I will try calling my son tomorrow to wish them all a happy New Year.
I'm sorry your DD is under so much pressure to get everything done by today! That must be very stressful.
My DGSs will be going back to school this week too - I'm not sure if it's Wednesday or Thursday. The kids here are off until next Monday!

We're having another mild day today, but tomorrow will be very cold again. I do have a few chores to finish today, but nothing strenuous.

I hope you're both having good days, for the last day of 2018!

Mema – I’m sure you did well if your DH could hear you. Our church mics are controlled by a guy in the back and he’ll adjust them louder or quieter when different people speak.

I love having a day of rest when you don’t have anything to do.

Those cuts of meat w/ more fat and connective tissue do better in a slow cooker. I don’t like the recipes that use lean cuts like chicken breast b/c the meat tends to be very dry.

Enchiladas sound nice. But then, so do BLT’s. I only make those in the summer when there are good tomatoes.

Leslie – glad you got your toilet unplugged. We had ours get partly stopped up yesterday, too, but I got it going again by flushing it half a dozen times – alternating w/ the other toilet that feeds into the same drain. Whoosh!

We’re on the same weather roller coaster. Yesterday was freezing, tomorrow will be mid 50’s.

I hope you have a lovely conversation w/ your son today or tomorrow.

DH and DD looked at cars yesterday afternoon and she thinks she’s narrowed it down to what she wants. She drove a Mazda that was not for sale and liked it. They’re bringing one in from another location that is for sale so she may get to try it out and actually buy one today or tomorrow.

Meanwhile, she’s trying to get everything done by “year’s end” which means today. She’ll be dropping DGS off again this morning and working until she either gets done or her brain overloads.

I checked the school calendar yesterday and realized that DGS doesn’t head back to school until Thursday. I had thought his first day was Wednesday.

I guess I did fine in church, although DH thought the mic was turned off - it was on, but I guess I wasn't close enough. He did say, though that I spoke loud enough - he has a hearing problem and didn't have his hearing aids on, so I guess that meant people in the back could hear me.

The rest of the day was a day of rest for me! It is cold here, so I stayed inside and played some games on my phone and just relaxed.

I was going to make enchilada's (beef/bean) for dinner tonight, but DH would like BLT's, so I will do that instead and make my enchilada's tomorrow. I'll actually make 2 smaller pans and put one in the freezer.

Leslie - My DH goes to Sam's Club soon after we arrive down here (his grandfather was a butcher - so he knows meat better than I do) and purchase family packs of pork chops (bone-in and boneless). The bone-in pork chops will usually have, what I call pork steaks on the bottom of the package. Good meat, but more fatty. We use those for crock pot meals, so nothing fancy, but they cook up very tender. I don't believe he added any liquid as the meat did have fat on it. He actually took a baster a couple of times to take off the liquid that was in the crock pot.
Oh, I'm so glad your toilet "unplugged" itself! LOL I think that's a very good idea to leave the regular maintenance guy a note. Or do you have a manager or management company that you could call as well? I forgot with the holiday, you really would have been inconvenienced!

Kate - That is funny about the cereal's from long ago - most of them did have Sugar this or Sugar that in the name.
I'm glad you were able to have a nice visit with your sister and that your DS was able to join you.
Did the car shopping prove to be productive?
I don't suppose your DD is getting overtime pay with her new job? She's probably salaried now. It sounds like she has an awful lot to do for end of the year. Nice that she can just stay with you and have her son there, so she's not driving back and forth to drop him off.

Have a good Monday!

Happy New Year's Eve!

Mema - I'm glad yesterday was such a good day for you, and great that you received the two phone calls from distant friends! I'm glad that the speech of your friend who'd had the strokes was not affected. That is always so stressful for everyone. I'm glad she has good help.
The dinner your DH made sounds delicious! What cut of pork did he use? Did he add any sort of liquid to the crockpot?
I'm sure you'll do fine with the readings today. I agree with Kate - speak slowly.
My toilet eventually unplugged itself, which was a great relief! I was afraid I would have to wait until Wednesday for our building's maintenance man to get back from holidays. Nobody but him seems to know where the snake is. I'm going to leave him a note to ask him to please let the weekend guy, and the holiday replacement guy, know where the snake is! I had this guy come one other time about something else, and it would be hard to find someone lazier or more useless.

Kate - I also get up to the toilet almost every night, so I was glad I didn't have to worry about it last night!
I did have a box of Corn Pops several years ago - I didn't know they were the Sugar Pops of old.
I'm very happy that you had a good visit with your sister. I'm sure the lunch out was great, and I'm glad your DS was able to join you there.
I hope your DH and DD are able to find her a suitable car this afternoon!

Our temperatures have been on a real roller coaster ride - yesterday was quite cold, but today and tomorrow it will be back up to the freezing point.
I hope I might talk to my DS today, or I might wait and call on New Year's Day.

I hope you both have lovely Sundays!

Leslie – sorry about the blocked toilet. That really is inconvenient. I almost always get up in the night to use the facilities.

I don’t think the cereals have changed but they don’t use the word Sugar in the name. Sugar Smacks are now Honey Smacks and Sugar Pops are now Corn Pops. And they used to be labeled “Sugar” Frosted Flakes and “Sugar” Frosted Wheats.

Mema – how nice to have good phone calls from long time friends. Sounds like you had a productive day.

I'm sure you'll do well in the readings. Just remember to breathe deep ahead of time and read very slowly.

We ended up going out for lunch. DS was busy and didn’t come to my house but met us at the restaurant for lunch.

We had a nice visit w/ my sister. She will be headed back home tomorrow and she’s more than ready to get out of the cold. DGS and DD spent the night again. DD will work this morning while the rest of us go to church and then DH and DD will try to get a car chosen and purchased.

I had a great day today. This morning I received a phone call from a good AA friend up North. She runs the Wed. meetings up there and I always try to go to her meeting, so she and I have become better friends. So that was a very nice surprise.

Then I did my laundry today and even got my ironing done. DH wasn't feeling up to go to the Flea market, so that was OK. It was a cold, blustery day anyway.

Then this evening I received another phone call. This was from a very dear friend who used to live here in Alamo Country Club. I actually did cleaning for her for awhile and we became good friends. But she moved to Arkansas several years ago and we would just keep in touch by phone. I had lost her phone number and sent her a Christmas card giving her my phone number and asked her to call if she could. So that was a wonderful conversation. She is 85 years old and had a couple of strokes, but it didn't affect her speech. Mainly her mobility, but she has nurses and other help thru out the week. But for 85, she sounds like she's 65!

And, DH made dinner tonight. He put pork, potatoes, carrots and cabbage (that was for him) in the crock pot and it turned out fabulous!

Tomorrow in church, I'm the reader for the OT reading and the Epistle reading. It's my first time, so I'm a little nervous, but only because we have been having a lot of people in church. I just have to read off a piece of paper so I'm sure I'll do OK. If I am nervous when I get up there, after a few seconds, I'll be fine. I don't mind being in front of people.

Leslie - I'm so sorry about your toilet! That replacement maintenance man should not be a maintenance man if he doesn't know where the snake is! I would think that should be a "no-brainer"! That does not seem right to leave you w/out a toilet even if there is a public restroom in the building.

Kate - My BIL used to work for General Mills and at one time at his cabin, he had a short wall covered with covers of cereal boxes! It was varnished over, so it looked rather unique. My favorite sugar cereal to this day is Honey Comb! It's been a long time since I've had that.
The movie that your DGS chose looks like it would have been a funny movie for kids.
How nice to have your sister visiting you. Did you end up with everyone for lunch? Or was it just a few of you? How long is she here?
I hope your DD and DH find a car - that would be helpful, I'm sure.
Have fun with your DGS for the rest of the vacation time!

Enjoy your Sunday!

Today my problem is a plugged toilet. Of course our maintenance guy is off, and the one who fills in on weekends doesn't know where the snake is kept. The replacement guy came and gave 2 or 3 half-hearted pushes on my plunger, and was going to leave. I suggested he try it again, and he did, but certainly put no effort into it! It's still plugged. He told me to just 'watch it' over the rest of the weekend! Fortunately there are public toilets downstairs, but that sure is inconvenient when you're used to using your own, and I won't be wanting to go down there in the middle of the night!

Mema - I'm really sorry that order took so long to get to you! At least you have it now.
I used to enjoy going to a flea market sometimes. I have a LOT of T-shirts.
I'm like your DH I guess - I have stacks of things too!
We got a bit of snow and it's cold today, but will be warming up tomorrow and Monday again.

Kate - that puzzle sounds good! I remember Sugar Pops and Frosted Flakes, but that's all the sweet ones I can think of - oh Fruit Loops was another one...
I hope your DGS liked the movie he chose. I'm glad he's more relaxed now!
How nice that your sister will be with you today. I also need rooms to be warm; the two places I lived in prior to here were very cold in the winters, and I love the heat here!
I'm glad you've been having such a good time with your DGS spending time with you.

I hope you both have great Saturdays!

Mema – you’re getting into the January re-organize and clearing out early this year. LOL.

Sorry your order took so long but I’m sure it will still be appreciated. My DD was upset to realize that she hadn’t sent in the teacher gifts on the last day of school but I told her they would be just as nice after the new year. I have a book on order for my DGS that I hope will get here for his Birthday on the 17th.

Leslie – the puzzle we got for Christmas was photos of old Kellogg’s cereal boxes. Amazing how many of them were labeled “Sugar” this or that. We were certainly not health conscious about sugar when I was young. Heavily sweetened cereal was the normal fare.

Yesterday I had to go over to the church to do some work and DH took DGS to the movie. We thought about the Mary Poppins movie but DGS wanted to see “Ralph Breaks the Internet”.

It was a nice laid back relaxing day. DGS has been watching old Disney movies here, too, and it’s so nice to see him dancing around and singing “Let’s go fly a kite” or “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”. He was so wound up and stressed out at the start of vacation.

My sister is up from Florida staying w/ her step daughter south of Boston. She’s going to drive up here today to visit w/ all of us. DS will be coming over and DD will come and bring DGS. It should be a nice visiting time for all of us. I will have to turn the thermostat up for my sister. She’s really gotten used to the warm Florida climate. We’ll do something for lunch but

I’m not sure how many people to plan for since I don’t know how long DD and DS will stay. It might just be DH, DGS, my sister and I.

Tomorrow after church, my DH and DD will go car shopping and hope to find a suitable car.

We’ll have DGS for a few more days until he starts school on Wednesday. It’s been a nice vacation w/ him.

I ran my donations over to Goodwill this morning and started some of my cleaning before DH left for his dad's. But then he wanted to talk for a few minutes, so I ended up waiting until he left. But I got everything done today. That's always a good feeling.

I finally got an order I was waiting for. There was a Christmas gift in this order for my friend who took over the Bible study. I was very disappointed that it took over a month to get this order. I will bring it to church on Sunday and give it to her there. I told her it was delayed. It's a bracelet and necklace set that has Scripture verses on them. I ordered a set for myself and my sister and then one for my friend.

Tomorrow DH wants to go to the Flea Market. It's always fun to look around there. I do get some t-shirts (just plain) that I wear almost every day. If I'm not going anywhere in particular I put one of these t-shirts on, so I get my use out of them and I could use a couple new ones.

Kate - what movie did you end up going to? I would really like to see the new Mary Poppins movie! I saw a special on TV about it and Emily Blount who plays Mary Poppins looks like she will be excellent in the movie. I just think it would be fun. Maybe I'll wait until I get up to MN and take the kids.
How fun to have your DGS snuggled in with you! What a treasured moment.
Any news on a car for your DD?

Leslie - If I sleep in too long sometimes, I feel behind like you said, but I can still move quickly enough to feel caught up! LOL
I really did get a lot of things organized in my bedroom and bathroom yesterday. I have been trying to get my DH to do just a "little" of that, but I can tell that's going to be a battle. He has a tendency to "stack stuff" in all these piles! Drives me crazy! LOL
It seems like it's been unusually cool down here and unusually warm up North! They did get their fair share of snow yesterday and it's cooled off a bit this week, but by next week they are forecasting temps in the mid to upper 30's! It used to be everyone looked forward to the "January thaw" - I'm not sure they need it this year! LOL

Have a Super Saturday!

Wow, I got up about an hour later than usual, and I've felt behind with everything all morning - not that anything was critical.
I did order my groceries shortly after 9; they will come this afternoon.
I think it rained all night, but now it's just cloudy, and warm for this time of year. We are supposed to get snow tomorrow, but not a lot.

Mema - I'm glad you slept so well on the 26th. I'm glad you felt better yesterday. Wow, you were really ambitious, cleaning out closets and drawers. I donated 2 big bags of clothes to the Salvation Army in early December, and I'm sure I can find more things to give away.
And, getting your pictures all organized sounds like a big job too!
I think you did tell me before that your son was the first baby of the New Year in that town, but because the town was so small, not much of a big deal was made about it. You did have a quick labour. My DS came very quickly, but my first baby took a long time because she was a breech baby.
You will have cool weather for the weekend!
Before I had a computer here, I used to spend a long time doing puzzles. There is quite a large area near the elevators on each floor, and there is a table on just about every floor with a puzzle going.

Kate - how nice that you and your DGS had the quiet time together this morning, with your coffee and his cocoa.
I'm glad he enjoyed the trampoline place yesterday. I hope you both like the movie today.
I do not have to go anywhere until near the end of next week when I need to go to the post office to mail the gift and card for my elder GS's birthday. I hope my friend will be able to take me; I'll have some library books to return too.

I hope you both have good days!

DGS spent the night and is tucked in beside me this morning drinking his hot cocoa while I drink my coffee. We had fun at the trampoline place yesterday.

Today I’m thinking we’ll go to a movie today.

Leslie - hope you don't have to go anywhere in the freezing rain. It's raining here, too, but it's in the upper 40's so it won't freeze.

Mema - sounds like you got a lot done.

Well, I didn't go to bed last night at 7:30 when I was so tired, but I was in bed by 10:00 pm and I think asleep at 10:02! I was tired. Slept all night and didn't wake up until 8:30 am! So I must have needed the sleep. I felt much better today. As a matter of fact, I started cleaning out closets and drawers! I've got a big load to take to Goodwill tomorrow.

And I transferred my pictures on my phone to my desktop computer and put all those pictures into separate files, so that's all organized.

DH will go and see his dad tomorrow, and I will clean the house while he's gone.

Leslie - My DS was born at 12:20 pm on January 1st. We lived in a small town outside of Chicago (Carol Stream) and so he was the 1st baby born of the New Year. But I had my first labor pains at 5:20 am. Woke my DH up at 7:00 am to go to the hospital. So it went rather quick.
Are you getting any of the snow that is hitting the Midwest? It sounds like it's bad with snow, rain, snow again. We are in for a cool down on Sat/Sun - temps on Sunday will not get out of the low 50's.

Kate - I don't blame you for being lethargic - YOU had a very busy Christmas!
When I was in my late 20's/early 30's I did quite a few puzzles. I really enjoy them. I don't really have any place to do them here. I probably could find a place up North. When my mom lived at John Knox Village, they had a room on every floor that was dedicated to doing puzzles. There would be several going at once and anyone could go in and work on them anytime they wanted. On the 1st floor of the building in the hallway going down to the puzzle room, they had lined the walls with framed completed puzzles - some of them were quite large and very beautiful!
Did you get to the trampoline park today? That sounds like it would be a fun place to go.
Did you DH find any cars for your DD to look at? I hope she can get one soon.

I need to bag up the rest of the stuff I took out of my closet so that's ready to go to Goodwill tomorrow with the rest.

Have a Fantastic Friday!

Mema - good for you, getting to Walmart so early and being able to get the lights you wanted, and other things too.
How nice that you and DH went to a Chinese buffet! I love those, but haven't been to one for a long time.
Did you get to bed early last night? I've been in bed by 8:30 for the past few nights, and have been getting up between 3:45 and 5 am. I like being up early - it's peaceful!
I'm glad you know that you'll talk to your DS on or before New Year's Day. Was he born early in the morning?
We also sang Handel's Messiah when I was in our school choir.

Kate - I really did have a wonderful Christmas! I had the remaining crab cakes last night. For some reason, these don't taste quite as good as the ones I had before - this is just the second box of them I've had.
I don't blame you for feeling lethargic yesterday - you had a busy Christmas! It sounds like you had a very pleasant day yesterday.
Taking your DGS to the trampoline place this morning sounds like a good idea.
I hope your DH can help your DD to find a good replacement car. I'm sure she'd like to get that done soon.

We are supposed to get freezing rain, but plain rain by tomorrow - it's supposed to be very warm tomorrow, upper 40s! Then it will be frigid again on Saturday.

I hope you both have good days!

Leslie – sounds like you had a lovely peaceful day w/ lots of contact w/ your family on the phone. I don’t think I’ve ever had crab cakes. They do sound good.

Mema – I was so lethargic yesterday I didn’t even get out to Walmart for the bows I need.

Yesterday DH and I did a jigsaw puzzle while DGS played computer games. Then we went out to lunch and we did some reading in the afternoon. DGS played w/ one of the toys we got him. And DGS and DH had a couple of nerf battles during the day.

Today I’ll take him to the trampoline place in the morning and the cleaning people are coming in the afternoon. Both DGS and DD will stay overnight so DD can get an early start to work tomorrow.

DH will be searching the internet for a good replacement car so I hope she can find take a bit of a break from work to go look at a car.

I was waiting outside of Walmart at 5:45 am this morning! Along with about 25 other people! I had a front row parking spot! I did get my lights, which I heard several other people talking about getting lights, too. So I was pleased with that. I also picked up 3 items for "hostess gifts" for next year. And I got my Christmas cards for next year. I was done with that by 7 am! I came outside and it wasn't even quite light out yet! LOL

I did also stop at Walgreen's, but only for vitamins. Came home and took a nap at about 9:30 for a couple of hours, but then was lazy the rest of the day! I was going to make dinner, but DH wanted to know if I wanted to go to Sam's Club to get fuel and pick up a few items we needed and then check out a new Chinese buffet! I was up for that! It was good - and very clean.

I'm not sure why I'm so tired, but I'm about ready for bed and it's only 7:30 pm! Not sure what is on the agenda for tomorrow. DH has his Bible study in the morning. It was also VERY windy here today again - and all day long. And cloudy, warm and humid.

Leslie - Happy Boxing Day!!
So glad to hear you received your gift card.
I'm glad you were able to get in all of your phone calls. I didn't hear from my DS, but his b-day is New Year's Day, so if I don't talk to him before then, I know I will that day.
I love Handel's Messiah - that brings back memories of when I was in choir in high school - we would sing that every year! I loved it.

Kate - The nerf guns for your DGS sounds like the perfect gift for a boy!
Sounds like your day was very nice, with being able to talk with some of your relatives.
I hope your DS's GF doesn't need the surgery - maybe the shots will take care of it for her. But it sounds like it's a pretty standard procedure if she does.
I can see why your DGS would love the Kringle - it did look delicious!

Enjoy your Thursday!

I did have a wonderful Christmas! The Amazon gift card did come finally, and I was very happy to get it - I've already ordered 3 books. They are supposed to be here between January 7-10. I hope I'll be home when they are delivered.
I talked to my son, DIL, both grandsons, and my sister, and also wished her fiance a Merry Christmas. The crab cakes were very good.
I listened to all my Christmas CDs, starting with Handel's Messiah, while I read, and later watched some shows on Netflix. It was a very good day.

Mema - I love the picture of you and DH. You both look festive in your red. I also love the picture of your sister's gift. That is very touching.
I'm glad you Skyped with your DH's son and family.
Did you ever get to talk to your DS? It sounded as if he would be having a very busy day. I'm so glad you'll be able to visit there in January!
I'm sure you enjoyed your turkey dinner, even if everyone else had the prime rib.
How was the shopping early this morning?

Kate - It sounds like you had a wonderful family day. I'm glad your DGS liked the nerf guns. I'm glad you had a chance to get out to the park, and enjoyed your calls! I'm sure your dinner was wonderful too.
I also hope your DGS didn't have a tummy ache from eating so much of the Kringle! I'm glad you'll have lots of time to spend with him this week.
I'm sorry about your DS's GF's hip injury - that does sound painful. I hope the arthroscopic surgery will be successful if she needs it. I had that on a knee several years ago, and had no further trouble with that knee.

I hope you're both having good days today. It's Boxing Day here, so another holiday. I do have a few little things to do, but it should be a pretty relaxed day.

Mema – what a lovely gift from your sister. Hope you were able to connect w/ your DS later in the day.

Nice photo of you and your DH.

Leslie – hope you got your phone calls w/ your DS and your sister. And also that your Amazon gift card arrives. I think those are like getting a free shopping pass since you can get almost anything from Amazon.

We’re continuing to have stretches of sunny and mid 30’s weather interspersed w/ days of warmer rain. I know that day when I went shopping I was glad our inch and a half of rain wasn’t snow.

We all gathered for breakfast and then opened gifts. DS got DGS a set of nerf guns so there were running nerf battles for the rest of the day.

DS, DGS, and I took the dogs to the park to get some fresh air and sunshine in the late morning. Then we had an early dinner (1 PM). We were just finishing dinner when my nephew called my DS and we had some Face time w/ DH’s family in NC – his mom, sister, etc.

I put out cookies and the Kringles in the afternoon. Turns out that DGS loves almond, too. He ate almost ¼ of the almond Kringle. I hope he didn’t have a tummy ache last night.

DGS will be here for the rest of the week during the day and perhaps over night if my DD works late. She thinks she will have to do that to get everything done by the end of the year.

DS’s GF has a torn labrum – that’s the ring of cartilage around the hip socket – probably damaged it running. She’s had physical therapy for it and now the shots. She will probably have to have arthroscopic surgery in the upcoming year. I had a friend who had that surgery and it was really successful although she had to be careful during the recovery time.

Another nice day. We had a great meal - prime rib or turkey. I was the only one of the 5 of us who got the turkey. Everyone else had the prime rib. We had visited for awhile before dinner and then left about 2:30.

Here is a picture of me and DH.

Once we got home, we Skyped with DH's oldest son and family. They were having a white Christmas in LaCrosse, WI. It had snowed enough to cover the ground and stay. There is snow coming I guess in the Twin Cities, so my DS and family may end up with snow tonight and tomorrow I think.

I did call my DS, but got his voice mail. I'm not sure, but I think he was having company yet this afternoon. If I don't catch up with him tonight, I'm sure I will in the next couple of days.

And here is a picture of the Christmas gift my sister sent me. It made me cry - really touched my heart.

In case the writing is too small to read - it says, "I have an Angel watching over me. Her name is Mom."

Leslie - Did you get your Amazon gift card?
Were you able to talk with your son and sister?
And how was your crab cake dinner? I hope you were able to get in some good reading time, as well.

Kate - Does your DS's GF have a specific problem with her hip? Did she injure it?
How nice that your DS decided to come to church with you.
Sounds like you were having a very busy day today with family and making meals. I don't blame you for not wanting to make a 3rd meal!
I hope you get to do some fun things with your DGS while he's with you. I'm so looking forward to my trip to MN. I'll be flying out on the 15th of Jan.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to you both!! I hope you're having a lovely day so far.
I opened my gifts earlier by candlelight. I am a little worried that my DS said he was sending an Amazon gift card, which always comes in an email, but it isn't here, yet. I hope it will come because I already have a few books in mind that I'd like to get with it. I tried calling there to wish them Merry Christmas, but got their voice mail. It's possible that they've gone to church, but it would surpise me if my son went, since he's Jewish. I also hope to hear from my sister. I haven't tried calling her yet because she's in Calgary for the holidays, and there's a 2-hour time difference.

Mema - I'm glad you had such a great Christmas Eve! It all sounds wonderful, especially not having to clean up afterward!
Your DH's dad reminds me of my mum, and probably myself, making sure there's time for a drink, or two!
It sounds as if it may be hard getting hold of your DS today too, with all of their celebrations! That will be fun to Skype with the family with 5 kids!
I hope you do enjoy going out so early tomorrow!

Kate - I'm sorry your snow didn't stick. We have enough to cover the grass, but the street and driveway look bare. There is still quite a bit on the branches.
I'm glad your brunch yesterday was good, but I'm very sorry your DS's GF was having such bad hip pain. How nice that your DS joined you at the church.
I guess you're busy with family now. I hope that is going very well! I'm sure the dinner will be wonderful with your family.
I'm glad you'll be seeing a lot of your DGS during his school break.

I'm looking forward to my crab cake dinner! I'll be spending most of the afternoon reading.
Enjoy the rest of your days!!

Leslie – we had snow showers off and on all day yesterday but it wasn’t cold enough for it to stick. Have a lovely day reading.

Mema – sounds like a lovely day for you. Our service is also readings and carols.

We had a nice brunch w/ DS and his GF. They didn’t stay long b/c she is having a lot of hip pain and had just had a shot in the hip a few days ago.

DGS was here, too, until DD picked him up around 4. DH and I had a light supper and went to church for Christmas Eve. DS came and met us at the church. He hasn’t been in several years so I was happy when he asked what time the services were.

The troops will be gathering here around 9 for breakfast and presents. Dinner around 1 and then ?? I don’t have any idea how long people will stay. I’ll put out some kind of cheese and crackers and cookies in the afternoon but I wasn’t planning on making another meal. LOL

DGS will be here every day until Jan 1st. DD has major deadlines for things to be done and filed by the end of the year. She may be working late some nights, too so he’ll stay overnight as well.

What a nice day! I slept in a bit this morning and cleaned up the kitchen after DH made his batch of stuffed jalapeno's for this evening. We had a very nice service at church. It was a song service with the Christmas story told in between each Christmas hymn. And at the end we all lit candles for Silent Night.

Came home, changed clothes and went to DH's cousins for Christmas Eve. There were 6 couples there, a TON of food and very enjoyable. I did eat more than I should have. Sigh! We got there at 6 pm and left about 10 pm. So nice to not have to clean up after everyone. Did that for many years.

Tomorrow now we'll go over to my FIL's house about 11:15 am. DH's cousin and wife will also come over. We have reservations for our dinner over in the main building at 12:45. DH's dad wants us to come over early so we (he) can have a drink before we eat. But that's his thing - an excuse to drink. Glad I don't have to worry about that.

Then when we get home, we'll Skype with DH's oldest son and his family. They have 5 children (15 yrs. to 2 yrs.). So that will be fun! I will try and call my DS sometime tomorrow. I know they have been having celebrations since Saturday night! My DIL's parents are divorced, I am divorced from DS's dad so they have 3 celebrations there, plus my DIL always gets together with her aunt and family. But I guess this year, DS asked more people to come to their house instead of him running all over with 2 little kids.

Leslie - I'm actually looking forward to going out shopping early on Wed.! LOL
I'm glad you had a nice quiet day. Did you get a lot of reading done?
Will you talk with your son sometime during Christmas?

Kate - How was your brunch?
Will you have your DGS all week with you since he'll be off from school?
Do you have your DGS open his gifts on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?

Merry Christmas to you both! Have a wonderful day!

Mema - I am glad you are having a much more relaxed holiday!
How nice that your DH made chicken noodle soup.
Good luck being at Walmart at 6 AM on Wednesday! I would never do that - can't stand crowds.

Kate - that casserole you're going to have today sounds wonderful - I love all those vegetables. I used to 'poach' eggs that way in depressions I'd made in roast beef hash. My kids and I would have that for dinner sometimes.

I am having a quiet day today which is fine with me! I'm about to start reading.

I hope you both enjoy Christmas Eve, and Christmas morning!
We got quite a bit of snow today, so we'll have a white Christmas!

Mema – it’s funny about DGS since they don’t celebrate Christmas at their house, he’s not really into the whole thing. Someone asked him what he wanted for Christmas a few weeks ago and he just shrugged. But he will enjoy getting the gifts and having a week of vacation from school. DH and I will try to plan some outings for the week.

I do want to go to Walmart and get some more big red bows for my garlands. I bought some new ones when I got the new garland but they don’t quite match the old ones so I want to replace the rest of the old ones.

Leslie – what a treat to have such a long term friend to chat with.

For brunch I’m going to make a kind of casserole. You cut up eggplant, sweet potato, peppers and onions. Season them and bake them all on a sheet pan. Then the last few minutes, you make “cups” in the veggies and break a whole egg into each depression and bake it some more to cook the eggs. It makes a nice colorful and healthy meal. I’ll have a mixed fruit bowl and the kringles, too.

I didn't have a busy day today which was nice! I did a little bit of cleaning. My DH made chicken noodle soup (a new recipe for him) and it was good - so that was supper. I don't have anything pressing that I have to do tomorrow either other than church at 4 pm and then over to the cousins at 6 pm. This is really turning out to be a nice Christmas for me - no stress! I like it.

Leslie - Yes, going to Walmart the day after Christmas will be a bit like Black Friday, except that everything is 50% off - well, the Christmas stuff is and that's basically what I'm looking for. I found out that Walmart will open at 6 am on Wed., and I plan on being there then!! emoticon The biggest reason is for my lights, which I know is one of the things that goes the fastest down here.
How nice that you keep in touch with a friend you have had for such a long time.

Kate - I had never heard of the Suzuki method for learning to play an instrument, but I got on a website about how to keep 6 yr. olds interested in practicing and a lot of the people on that website were talking about Suzuki. I'll have to ask my DS.
I never realized there was such a difference in calories of wheat flour vs. almond flour. I've only used the wheat flour myself.
Your brunch sounds very nice. And I'm sure it will be fun to have your DGS with you tomorrow as well. He must be very excited!!

Merry Christmas Eve, Eve!

Mema - I'm very glad you're feeling better.
I agree that you were brave to try the dill pickle soup! That doesn't sound appealing... That does sound like a wonderful place for lunch though.
I'm a big fan of black licorice too.
I'm very happy for you that you had the video call with your DS and grandkids. How exciting that Dakota was able to read her own letter! And, that she could play you a song on the violin! Funny about the dog leaving the room. Ha!
Amazing that you've got your clothes so well organized! I haven't even been dressed yesterday or today. I will get dressed tomorrow so I can take out garbage and recycling and collect my mail. And I will get dressed on Christmas Day, but maybe not Boxing Day. I don't envy you, going shopping early that day! Won't it be like Black Friday?

Kate - I have heard too about licorice affecting blood pressure. I did finish it off today, but it wasn't a very big package, and has lasted since Wednesday!
I love the photo of your DS's dogs!! They look like such nice dogs.
I'm glad the stores weren't too crowded when you were out.
Good for you making vegan paleo cookies!
I'm glad you will have some family for Christmas Eve. What food will you have for that? I'm sorry your DD will be going to the office.

I've just had a call from my 'best' friend. We've known each other since 1955, and she was in both of my weddings. I haven't seen her for a long time, but we keep in touch by email, and we call around Christmas time, and on each other's birthdays in April and August. We had a good long chat!

I hope you're both having good days.

Leslie - hope you are having a restful weekend and getting all your reading done.

Mema – that sounds like a lovely video call w/ the letters and the violin solo. Is your DGD learning Suzuki method? My DS did Suzuki method piano and he learned songs by listening to them and playing them. They didn’t learn to read music until after they were already playing pretty well.

I’m glad that your throat is feeling better now. Not fun to be sick over the holidays.

I thought I was doing pretty well to have picked out what I'll wear this morning. LOL.

The cookies are just about the opposite of low calorie since they use nut flour instead of wheat. They are lower in carbs but loaded w/ healthy fats and some extra protein, too, so they tend to be very filling and satisfying, but also higher calorie. Here’s the comparison for 1 cup of each of the flours:

(Wheat flour = 455 cal, 1 gm fat, 95 gm carbs, 13 gm protein)
(Almond flour = 648 cal, 56 gm fat, 24 gm carbs, 24 gm protein)

I’m doing a Christmas Eve brunch w/ my DS and his new GF. She will spend Christmas day w/ her own family. DGS will be here tomorrow, too, since DD will be going into the office trying to catch up on work.

I was able to video call with my DS and grand kids this morning. DS read DGS's letter to him, but DGD read her own letter! They were both so surprised that Santa "knew" about their trip to FL and playing violin! I even got DGD to play me a song on her violin. Not too bad - a couple of "off" notes, but she was playing a song w/out looking at the music. And DS says she really likes it. So I hope she sticks with it. I did notice their dog, Casper get up and leave the room once DGD started playing! LOL

I texted my DS after the call that because I don't get to spend Christmas with them, this is my way of sharing a Christmas memory with them.

Then I pretty much took it easy the rest of the day until we had to go over to our neighbor's house. Stayed and visited with them for a few hours and came home. I can tell we're all "old" - a lot of the conversation was about medical stuff! LOL

I have my outfits picked out now for the next 3 days. We have church tomorrow, but then on Christmas Eve I'll wear something different to church from what I'll wear in the evening. It will be warm at 4:00 for church, but then it will cool off at 6:00 when we go to DH's cousins. Then I need another outfit for Christmas Day. But I have them all lined up!

Kate - My sore throat does seem to be a lot better. I will continue to gargle at least one more night. Just to be on the safe side.
That is funny that one of your DS's dogs is afraid of the bubbles. Dogs do react to things differently.
Your vegan, paleo cookies sound very interesting. Are they low calorie, too?
I'm glad the stores weren't crowded for you. I would not want to even go near the stores down here this weekend. But I'm getting ready for my Wednesday adventure!! Walmart will be closed on Christmas Day, but I need to find out what time they will open on Wednesday and see if I can be there that early. The biggest thing I'm interested in is getting the new Christmas lights for my tree and I need about 7-8 strings of them. And I'm sure that will be one of the items that will go pretty fast.

Leslie - I hope you are having a restful day!

Happy Sunday!

Mema – holidays do make us miss the loved ones that are gone. I remember the first few years when I would reach for the phone to call Mom and then remember I couldn’t.

What an interesting concept for a restaurant. You’re brave to try something like Dill Pickle soup.

I hope the sore throat stops hurting entirely. A nap and a salt gargle sound like good ways to treat a ‘not quite right’ feeling.

Funny about your mention of bubbles and dogs – DS’s dog Nash is terrified of bubbles. He’ll run and hide when my DGS blows them.

Leslie – I have heard that some of the licorice that we get in the stores here doesn’t have much real licorice in it at all. They use anise instead. Don’t eat too much of your stash b/c the real stuff can effect your heart.

That is a photo of my DS’s dogs. He took them to a photo shoot at the local pet store. Toby is the yellow lab, Daisy the small brown mixed breed is just 1 yr old, and Nash is the taller brown mixed breed. Nash is the first dog DS got out in Reno.

I got out for my errands and grocery shopping early yesterday and got everything done before lunch. It was pouring rain so the stores weren't too crowded. Now, I have those two last gifts to wrap today and that will be the end of my prep for Christmas.

In the afternoon, I was feeling good enough that I decided to make cookies – vegan, paleo cookies! LOL. The molasses ones are good and chewy and not too sweet. The chocolate chip cookies spread out to fill the cookie sheet so I had to cut them apart. They’re very fragile but tasty. If I decide to do more baking like this, I’ll need a better recipe.

I had a real nice lunch with my cousin. We went to The Soup Doctor restaurant! It is this small little restaurant run by a husband and wife. Their main business is catering, but open their restaurant from 11:00-2:00 M-F. They offer about 8 different kinds of soup and about 8 different meals. The soups range from Chicken (with an actual chicken thigh - bone and all) plus a lot of veggies to "Chinese Ancient Secret Soup" to Tortilla Soup. Today's special was Riced Potato Dill Pickle soup! It was a creamy soup flavored with dill pickle. It was actually pretty good. I wasn't sure what to expect. I had just a cup of that along with Beef Bistro Rolls. Very similar to Lonches, which are small rolls that are lightly fried with the beef, onions and lettuce. They were very good, too.

My cousin had the Chinese Ancient Secret soup - that came in either 32 oz. or 64 oz.!! She only ate about half of hers. About half way thru our meal, the husband (who is the cook) came out and visited for a few minutes. They are a Christian couple and just lovely. It was really nice. I will definitely go back. And we each got our own 1/2 carafe of tea. I had Raspberry tea and my cousin had 1/2 Lemonade, 1/2 tea.

I came home, took a short nap, then got all my ironing done. I felt like I was getting a cold this morning, but that seems to be going away. My sore throat seems to come and go. I will gargle again with salt water and take more ibuprofen before bed.

My DS called this afternoon and we are going to do the Santa letters in the morning. He forgot he told a friend of his he would help him move some heavy things, so he needed to do that tonight.

Tomorrow afternoon we are invited to our neighbors for a short get together. DH is making a small batch of the stuffed jalapeno's to bring over as a trial run for Christmas Eve! He hadn't made them in a few years, so he wants to be sure he's got the recipe right.

Leslie - I'm not sure which I'll choose on Christmas Day. I usually go for the turkey, but I do like Prime Rib. It will depend on what the sides are to go with each.
I checked out the puzzle website - those are some very cool puzzles! There is one from Russia that is beautiful and there is a coffee mug that is the same as the puzzle. Our minister speaks fluent Russian and we support a sister congregation over there. I may think about purchasing the coffee mug for my pastor.
I do like licorice myself, too. Black over red for me!

Kate - I looked up O & H Bakery and saw all the different flavors of Kringle they have! Oh my!! They are located in Racine, just south of Milwaukee where I lived for a time in the early 80's.
I really am looking forward to a stress free, no cooking holiday this year. It's going to be strange w/out my mom.
I saw on the news tonight all the rain that is out your way! Did you get everything done that you needed to before the rain?
One year my sister sent our dogs a Christmas card from their dogs! That was pretty funny! If those are your DS's dogs, they are cute! Love the lab. We had a white lab when I was a child. Dusty was his name. But the neighbor kids down the alley poisoned him. They were very mean kids. He was a great dog. He would chase those bubbles that we blew from the jars.

Have a great Saturday!

Mema - glad to see you post again! I'm sorry you haven't been feeling in top form. I hope you slept well last night and feel better today.
Your lunch with your cousin sounds good. Are you eating at her house, or out?
I'm glad you'll have a break from the busyness after Christmas.
No hurry on checking out the puzzles. You can see how great they look from the page that is up.
It actually turns out that this particular licorice is from Sweden. I have no idea if the foreign licorice is any better. The licorice this friend has sent in the past has all been from Australia. I just love licorice. The licorice I have liked best is from England, a company called Callard & Bowser; they had a licorice toffee which was amazing! I don't think that company exists any more though.
I'm glad you weren't wearing heels on Tuesday.
The stuffed jalapenos your DH is going to make for Christmas Eve sound fantastic! I love stuffed jalapenos!!
Your plans for Christmas Day sound great too! Which will you choose, prime rib or turkey?? That sounds like a hard choice to make.

Kate - thanks for the photo of Kringles - looks good!
That veggie casserole sounds very tasty! I love veggies.
I'm sorry you had shopping to do today. I hope that's done now!
We've had pouring rain all night and this morning - thank goodness it wasn't snow; there would have been many feet of that! It's getting colder now, and there will be some freezing rain and then snow, so we may have a white Christmas after all.
Haha - getting gifts for the dogs!! I do usually take something for my DS's dog when I go to visit though, something chewy. I'm happy to see her too. Is that actually a photo of your 'granddogs', or just one you found?

I hope you're both having a good day.

Leslie – how terrifying to have someone at your grandson’s school planning to shoot another student. I’m glad it was found out and stopped.

Kringles are a kind of Danish pastry that are apparently famous in Wisconsin. A friend from there recommended them. I ordered them from O&H bakery.

The casserole is supposed to be an alternative to stuffing. It has 'riced' cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, carrots, onions and celery and has the same herbs you would put in stuffing.

Mema – I figured you had a busy day and didn’t get here to post. Sorry to hear that you’re not feeling well. Take it easy and take care of yourself.

Your holiday plans sound nice and stress free. No cooking or prepping.

I’m headed out to do my holiday grocery shopping and pick up a few last minute gifts – one to replace a gift that won’t be delivered on time and another just an exchange. We’re forecast for pouring rain later today so I want to get out and do it as early as possible.

DS mentioned to me that “You don’t need to get any Christmas gifts for the dogs.” LOL! I wasn’t planning to get any. It hadn’t even occurred to me. I really don't get this current trend of treating dogs like kids.

So it was a busy day on Wednesday. When I finally got home, I had a bit of a sore throat so I laid down for awhile. Ate a little bit of supper, but then went to bed early. I was feeling a bit worse. I didn't have anywhere to go today, so I just did laundry and took it easy. I still have a bit of a sore throat. I've been gargling with salt water, taking ibuprofen and will go to bed shortly again.

I don't have to get up early tomorrow, but I am going to lunch with my cousin. That won't be a long time out, so I can always come home and rest again. I don't have any other symptoms - no fever, aches or anything like that.

So I apologize for not posting. Just too busy and getting run down. Need to do less and take care of me. But after Christmas, things should really slow down - no Bible Studies for a couple of weeks, no get together's, etc.

Leslie - thank you for the soon-to-be website regarding the puzzles. I'll try and check it out after Christmas.
You have been getting a lot of goodies! They all sound delicious! Is there something better about licorice from Australia?
When I went to the funeral this past Tuesday, I didn't wear heels. I wasn't planning on being in church during the service since I didn't really know this man personally, so I didn't have to dress up. It was much better for my feet! LOL
We (DH and I) will go to his cousin's house for Christmas Eve and everyone just brings their favorite appetizer. DH is going to make sausage/cream cheese stuffed jalapeno's. And on Christmas Day we will all go to John Knox Village where DH's dad lives and where my mom was living and have their Christmas dinner. Last year is was Prime Rib or Turkey. All very good. Not sure what they plan for this year, but I'm guessing pretty much the same.
That is soooo scary about your grandson's school. So glad another student over heard and had sense enough to tell the parents and the police got involved.

Kate - I'm glad you were able to have your DH pick up your DGS from school the other day. I can't imagine trying to drive feeling nauseous and/or dizzy. I do hope you're feeling better.
People are getting so bold these days - following a UPS truck and then stealing the packages? And I've seen on the news the video tapes of people stealing the packages because home owners are now installing camera's. It's really sad that people will do things like that.
I'm curious, too as to what are Kringles? And where in WI do they come from?
So sorry to hear that your DD's car is totaled. I hope your DH can find her a nice, reasonably priced replacement. I'm sure it was a bit stressful having 2 different people telling you 2 different things to do regarding plates. But it does sound like she had it covered by putting a note on the car in case the police did come by. I'm sure it helped talking to you. Mom's seems to know how to make things better - no matter what it is. emoticon

Happy Friday to you!

Mema - I hope all is well and you were just too busy yesterday and tired last evening to post!

Kate - I'm very sorry about your DD's car, but you pretty much knew it had been totalled, so it wasn't a horrible shock.
I hope there were no problems about having the plates off. I hope your DH is able to help her find a replacement that's not too expensive.
I don't know what Kringles are, but anything almond sounds good to me!! I'm glad you like the one you opened. Putting it in the freezer is probably a good thing!
I forgot to say yesterday that the peppermint bark was sent in a 'doggie' bag - a gift bag covered with pictures of dogs! Hahaha! I should probably put what's left in the freezer for a few days too!
The chicken you're going to roast sounds good, and so do the veggie casserole and rice pilaf. What veggies will be in the casserole?

Yesterday on FB, my DIL posted a newspaper article about an incident at my younger grandson's middle school. A boy had decided he was going to shoot someone in the school, and was going to get the gun from another boy. Fortunately, another student had overheard this, and told his/her parents, who got the police and the school involved. I was horrified to hear this. It's never expected, of course, but certainly not in VT! My grandson stayed home from school yesterday. I don't blame him! I hope this all gets sorted out well.

This is a much quieter day for me, and I plan to spend the afternoon reading.

I hope you both have good days!

Mema - missed seeing a post from you. I guess your day really was very busy.

Leslie – they say the average person gains 5-7 pounds over the holidays.

I’m not doing a turkey. I’m roasting a nice big chicken. There are only 4 of us that eat meat so that should be enough and I won’t need to deal w/ left overs. I’ll do a veggie casserole and rice pilaf for those that don’t eat meat.

I took ballet for many years, too, and I have a sense of rhythm. I just need a lot of repetition to remember a set of steps. A LOT of repetition!

My order of Kringles from Wisconsin came yesterday. I opened one (Almond macaron) to taste it. Oh my Goodness! It was so perfect. I immediately put it back in the bag and box and put it in the freezer and there it is staying until Christmas Eve. I’m going to have to give any leftovers away after Christmas b/c the temptation will be huge.

So DD’s car is officially totaled and she needs to buy another one. DH is already looking on line for what’s available. I hope he can locate a good one. Her stress level is off the charts. She called in a panic yesterday afternoon b/c the insurance company told her to take off the license plates before the salvage guy comes to tow the car and she did before she left for work. Then the appraiser told her not to take off the plates until just before the tow came b/c Boston city would tow any car w/o plates deeming it abandoned. She was already at work and was worried the city would tow the car before the salvage guy came. I told her that the police know the car was in an accident and is not drivable. She left a note on the car, too, telling them not to ticket it just in case. And, in any event, there was nothing she could do about it in the middle of the day so getting all upset about what might happen wasn’t productive.

I have been getting flooded with goodies lately! Yesterday my housekeeper brought me cookies, and this morning after the exercise class there was a package stuffed into my mailbox. A friend had sent chocolate/caramels, and a bag of soft licorice. The licorice is from Australia. No sooner had I eaten the chocolates when the postman knocked on my door and handed me quite a big box from my family in VT. There are 4 wrapped gifts and a bag of peppermint bark! I will be gaining 5 lbs. by Christmas!

Mema - I'm glad you got your cookies mailed to your son and family - I know they will appreciate them! That's awful about people stealing packages!
Having a group to be responsible for food at funerals and potlucks sounds like a good idea. That was a lot of people you served yesterday! I hope you weren't stuck being on your feet too much while wearing heels.
You will be having a busy day today! I avoid Walmart in December! Good luck getting your few things there today.
I was good at picking up dances when I was younger (I took ballet for 3 years), but in recent years I've been terrible. I'm sure your cheerleading and other dancing experience is helpful for you. I have good rhythm too, but our instructor doesn't, which is sometimes frustrating. I like 'In the Mood' too! I used to dance with my dad, years ago.
Our East Side Mario's also has a fabulous 'endless' salad, as well as endless garlic bread, which comes to the table warm. emoticon

Kate - I'm sorry you were having some trouble with nausea while getting in and out of parking places. It's good your DH was able to do the drive to Boston so you could pick up your DGS. I hope you will be fine by Friday when you need to get out for a bit of shopping.
Has your DD heard any more about her car situation?

Are you both going to have turkey for Christmas? When I got groceries last week, I forgot Christmas would be here before I ordered again, but I did order crab cakes, so they will be my Christmas dinner this year! They are a real treat. I've only ordered them once before. I will order a small steak and fresh mushrooms to have for New Year's.

I hope you're both having wonderful Wednesdays.

Mema - I'll post this before I forget. I have copied Michael's email to his mom, my friend, when she asked about the website. Here it is:

It is/will be www.theoccurrence.ca, but it’s just a splash page right now (no functionality, it just looks pretty). The fully functioning version is ready, pending our approval however, so we’re hoping to get to it up this week. Tell people not to count on it until after the holidays though.

Now I'll go and write my regular post.

Mema – theft of packages has happened a lot around the country. I remember last year the police caught someone who was actually following the UPS van and grabbing the packages after they were delivered.

Sounds like another busy day for you. Good thing you have leftovers waiting for dinner.

Leslie – I do think that it’s our health that makes us feel young or old.

Sunday, I watched the whole first season of Travelers. It’s a sci-fi show about people from the future sending their minds back to our time to try to prevent a future disaster that almost wiped out humanity.

I’ve been doing some of the ‘at home’ maneuvers that help shift the ear rocks out of the way.

I tried going out and doing some shopping yesterday morning. Since I was getting nauseous when I had to get in and out of parking spots, I asked DH to do the drive down to Boston. We picked up DGS and he stayed w/ us until his mom got out of her meeting and picked him up around 7:30.

Today and tomorrow, my DH needs the car for work meetings w/ one of the heads of the company division he works for so I will be staying home. Not really tempted to exercise yet anyway. I will need to go out on Friday for the last minute food purchases and one more gift. Since my dizziness seems to be getting a bit better every day, I think I should be just fine by Friday.

I got my box of cookies off to my son today! And I had ordered some things from Walmart and they were being delivered today at my DS's house. I was hoping the package wouldn't get snatched. They have been reporting down here that TX, MN and one other state was having quite a bit of that going on. To the point the police were putting GPS tracking devices into fake packages to catch people. It was working down here, they have caught several people. Luckily, my DIL comes home for lunch quite a bit and she put the box into their basement. She did say, they haven't had that problem where they live. It's out in the country, but in a sub-division so quite a few homes all around. I'll let her know when the cookies are supposed to arrive and hopefully she can do the same thing.

We are getting things organized as far as a committee for funerals, pot-lucks and other luncheons. We have 20 women we can call when we need food! That is amazing considering our congregation (small and old)! LOL

We served about 65 people today. I was at church from 10:30 until 2:00! Came home to rest and then got a headache, so I took my headache medicine and laid down for a bit. Then DH and I went for our dinner. I brought most of my entree home with me. So I think with a couple of other things in the frig, tomorrow's dinner will be left overs.

Tomorrow is Bible study and then I'll head over to my sponsor's for our meeting and then go to Walmart for just a few things. In a way, I'll be kind of glad when all the holidays are over! emoticon

Leslie - Don't worry about the website for the puzzles, whenever you can get it is fine.
The cardio dance is twice a week, too like your exercise. I'm hoping that after the holidays I'll start walking on a couple of the days I don't have the cardio dance. I'm pretty good at catching on to the steps, maybe because I was a cheerleader from 5th grade thru 12th grade and then I took Country Western line dance lessons awhile back, so I think that helps. I've always had pretty good rhythm and loved dancing with my dad. My favorite song to dance to was "In The Mood" by Glenn Miller Orchestra. We would do the Lindy which he taught me.

Kate - We have Longhorn Steakhouse here, too. And I like that restaurant as well. But I do love the salad at Olive Garden.
Were you able to go shopping and pick up your DGS?
So sorry to hear about your DD's hit and run! That happened to me once, but not nearly as much damage. The person basically side swiped my car. I do hope they put "2 and 2" together so they can catch the guy. Especially if it was the drunk driver, which seems pretty likely from what you said.

Have a great Wednesday!

I don't know why I didn't post yesterday - guess I lost track of time and then forgot!

Mema - I'm very happy you had such a good time carolling! It's wonderful to be able to spread joy that way.
I'm sorry I don't have the website for the puzzles yet. I'll let you know when I do.
Although I don't feel old most of the time, I am 75, and have a lot of arthritis and COPD, so I do feel old when I try to get things done!
How great that you'll be going to the Olive Garden tonight! We don't have that here either, but we have East Side Mario's which is pretty good.
That cardio dance sounds good. That's like our exercise classes, not too strenuous, but keeps us moving! I'm glad to have them twice a week, but we'll have 2 weeks off over the holidays.

Kate - I love the photos! The finished gingerbread house looks wonderful and your DGS looks very proud of it. I would also go for the assembled house next time.
I'm really sorry about your DD's car! That is awful. It would be good if the police could deduce who did it! It seems there is an obvious candidate. She hasn't had this car very long, has she? I hope she'll get enough money to buy another car. I'm sorry she has to pay for the rental car.
I'm sorry about your vertigo. I have another friend with that; she has some exercises to do when it happens. I think they are just different ways to position her head.
What show were you binge watching?
I'm also not good at picking up on steps in any kind of dancing! At least in our classes, it's understood that we're all at different levels, so I don't stick out as being the only one not doing things 'right'.

I hope you are both having good Tuesdays!

Mema – I am slow to pick up on step combination so whenever I do something like cardio dance, step or Zumba, I’m way off what’s being taught. I just concentrate on keeping moving and having fun.

Nice to go out for dinner after a busy day. Enjoy Olive Garden. We don’t have any of that chain around here although we do have a Longhorn Steakhouse that is owned by the same parent company.

My head is still spinning a bit. I’m going to try and go out for a bit this morning to shop and see how it goes. If I don’t think I can trust myself on the highway, I’ll have DH take the afternoon off to drive down to Boston.

My DD came out to her car yesterday morning to find it smashed. She called the police as well as the insurance company. They had caught a drunk driver w/o a bumper a short distance away from where her car was smashed and the other guy’s bumper was left there. But we’re not sure they will bother to link the two incidents so she can claim against his insurance. In any event, from the photos, it looks like her car might be ‘totalled’ . He hit her w/ so much force the car was pushed into the car parked in front so the front bumper and hood are damaged as well as the back bumper, side panel and back door. She spent the day working from home and waiting for the insurance adjuster. Today she has a rental which will not be covered by insurance so the cost of it is causing her a lot of angst. Not to mention the fact that she probably will not get enough money to completely cover the cost of another car.

36.5 pounds gone, 17.5 more pounds is my 2020 goal.

Kate - LOVED the pictures and your DGS looks so proud of his accomplishment! Thank you for sharing. It would be very hard for a child to wait until the frosting set up! I'm glad you were able to fix it once you got home. I think I would go for the pre-assembled version next year, too.
I'm glad your DD and DGS got out early so they could go shopping.
I hope your taking it easy on Sunday helped with your vertigo. Were you able to go pick up DGS?

I got my box of cookies all set to mail tomorrow before I head to the funeral. I marked all sides of the box FRAGILE so I hope that helps. I have them packed very well, so they should arrive OK. I've been doing this now for several years, so I kind of know how to pack the different kinds.

I went up to the clubhouse for the "cardio dance" today. It was from 3:00-3:45. It was pretty much like it sounds. The woman who teaches it, though would get off the beat once in awhile and sometimes on different steps she would do them one way and the next time another way. But it's all OK. The point is to keep moving. I guess it's like step aerobics in a way. I think I will go as often as I can. She has it twice a week. It's gets me moving and out of the house!

So, DH and I are going to Olive Garden for dinner tomorrow. Since I will be at the church mid-morning until mid-afternoon, I said I didn't want to have to come home and cook. So that will be nice.

Leslie - Hi! Hope you are resting and reading!

Have a great Tuesday!

Mema – such a busy day and week to come.

The caroling sounds like so much fun. I know the choir at our church used to go the nursing homes but they haven’t done that recently.

Leslie – I have PPPV (BENIGN PAROXYSMAL POSITIONAL VERTIGO) which means that small “ear rocks” move around in the canals of my ears and tricks the brain into thinking I’m moving when I’m not. It acts up once in a while but mostly it doesn’t bother me.

DD and DGS did get out of the house around 8:30 so I’m sure they got a lot of shopping done before the stores were too crowded.

Glad you had a sunny day. I don’t like it when it’s grey and gloomy for long stretches.

I’m still dizzy today from my swirling ‘ear rocks’ but the nausea seems to have settled down. I still look like a drunk trying to cross a room w/o running into walls and corners.

I spent Sunday in my recliner binge watching a TV show that DH had recorded but I had never watched. DH made me some lunch after church although I could only eat about half of it. We were invited out for dinner but I really couldn’t face getting up and dressed so he bought me a “low carb” burger before he had to leave for the dinner. I was happy just to sit and munch a bit of food before heading to bed at 7 PM.

I’ll be doing a drive into Boston to pick up DGS after school tomorrow so I’m hoping the dizziness had receded fully by then.

The gingerbread house construction was hilarious. The frosting in the kit was not drying nearly fast enough so in the end our house collapsed. The instructions say to assemble and wait at least an hour before decorating but that’s not really possible w/ kids. They had offered the option of a “pre-assembled” house where the walls and roof were already stuck together and dried. If we do it again, we’ll do choose that. When we got the house home, I used the last of the frosting to reassemble it with lots of drying time between steps.

What a day! Started off with church, then there was a voter's meeting after that. Came home for about an hour, then went to the play. Got home in time to cook my chicken for Caesar chicken salad and then off to caroling. The play was very good. The caroling went well, too. We had 3 different groups, so that was nice. We were able to cover the whole club that way. Two of the places we went to invited us into their homes and offered treats at one and the last house he had a tray of ham, turkey, roast beef, 3 kinds of cheeses, a tray of cookies and candies. He has a nurse that bought the food for him. Then he opened 2 bottles of Dom Perignon! He also had soda, so I had that, but I guess those bottles are very expensive, I know we have never bought it. I don't think I've ever even tasted it. So we stayed there the longest, then off to a gal's home for more goodies. I ate very little there. Stayed for awhile, got home about 8:15 pm. But it was nice to be doing this again. I really enjoyed it. One of the couples we caroled to, she started crying. She was very touched. That's what it's all about. Not to make people cry, but to touch their hearts.

Tomorrow is Bible study and I'll get my box of cookies ready for DS. I have a busy week coming up. Tuesday is the funeral, Wednesday is Bible study at church, then I'll meet with my sponsor and Friday I'm going to lunch with a cousin of mine. Her and her husband come down for the winter, but they live in a different park. I don't see her very often.

Leslie - That would be wonderful if you could get the website for the puzzles.
Glad you are having a sunny day (morning). We'll get a stretch of cloudy days and it really makes a difference when the sun comes out. Especially when the days are already short!
I'm glad you are concentrating on drinking your water. It's so easy for "older" folks to get dehydrated. (I'm not saying you're old emoticon )

Kate - so sorry to hear about your vertigo. I was talking with an aunt of mine last week and she gets that occasionally. She now has some medication she can take right away when she feels it coming on. Otherwise she ends up sick and vomiting.
I'm sure it was nice having your DD and DGS there for the night. Were they able to get out shopping today?

Have a great Monday!

Mema - I'm very glad you had such a good time with your DH's cousins!
That is really amazing that the card took all those months to get to you! At least you did finally get it.
I'm pretty sure my friend's son does sell the puzzles online. I'll ask my friend for the website so I can give it to you. The pictures of the puzzles are great.
Haha about hearing about the 'Y' from the Village People!

Kate - I'm really sorry about the vertigo! I went to the ER with that once, and they determined that I was dehydrated, and gave me a litre of IV fluids. Now I try to do a better job of staying hydrated. I was very surprised that I was dehydrated because my water bottle is always with me, and I do drink a lot of water most days...
Nice that your DD and DGS could spend the night. I'm sorry your DD gets so tired. I'm sure her job is very demanding. I hope they can do their shopping today.
I'm glad your friend is doing well now!

We're actually having a sunny morning! It seems like a long time since we've had sun.

I hope you both have lovely Sundays.

Oh, I woke up having wicked vertigo. I have bouts of it every few years. I hope this one doesn’t last long.

DD and DGS spent the night. They were supposed to go shopping yesterday late afternoon but DD was just too tired out. She plans to go out this morning before things get crowded. We’ll see if she can get herself out of bed.

Mema – sounds like a nice visit w/ your DH’s cousins.

Wow! I can’t imagine something taking that long in the mail but every now and then you hear stories about things like that.

Leslie – my friend is doing well. They are doing a lot of testing to be sure but think it was just a bad reaction to the medication they gave her for the sinus dilation.

Sorry you’re in so much pain from the spine. The jigsaw puzzles sound like a lot of fun. Glad they got there.

A friend from Bible study came over today and wanted to get more information on how to order glasses from Zenni so DH is the one who basically showed her everything. He measured her old glasses so when she was looking at frames she would be able to compare all the measurements so she would get something similar.

Then we went down to DH's cousins house and ended up staying there for dinner. We were only planning on an hour, turned out to be 4! But we all had a good time and good conversation.

I got a card in the mail today from my DIL's mom and thought it must be a Christmas card. When I opened it up, it was a sympathy card!! She had mailed it to me here in TX on April 30th, 2018 - we were here in TX until the 3rd week of May! It had a yellow sticker on it saying something about deliver to old address. I don't know what that means, but can you imagine that piece of mail took 7 months to get here!!

Leslie - Welcome back!
I'm glad to hear that your back is better as far as what it was after you moved that heavy tote. I can imagine you have pain everyday. There is a gal up North at our church who has scoliosis and you can see how her back is twisting. Not too severely yet.
That is very interesting about your friend's son and the pictures he takes. Are the puzzles for sale online for anyone? I would be curious to see them.
Our winds died down significantly so I was able to get my wreaths back up. DH found a Christmas ball ornament that must have come off someone else's wreath or decoration in our back yard. He thought it came off my wreath, but it didn't. So who knows where it came from! I looked around, but didn't see any like it close by us.

Kate - I do have progressive bifocals. One of the measurements that they need is your pupillary distance. That is where they start the lenses out and so there must be a standard based on that distance that they use. I've never had an issue with my bifocals.
Sounds like you had a fun day with your DGS - lunch and making gingerbread houses. I saw a funny on my computer somewhere, I can't remember where it was now, but it was a picture of a form that someone was filling out for the YMCA and where it said "How did you hear about us" the person wrote in - The Village People! It was a joke, but I laughed when I saw it!

Happy Sunday!

Hi - sorry for 'disappearing' again! Some days it seems that things just pile up, and I just don't get to everything I want to do.
My back has not been hurting too badly since the day I wrote about it, although I do have pain every day, and need to take medication for it. My spine is a mess. I have scoliosis and kyphosis, and the older I get, the more twisted it gets. My right breast is now almost under my right arm. So backaches are a daily thing, but some days are much worse than others.

Mema - Congrats on being done with your baking! I'm sure everyone who receives your cookies is very grateful for them!
Your DS is lucky to always find a new job when he's looking for one! I hope too that this will be a job he'll keep. It is hard to keep changing. It's good he's in AA, so maybe he'll be able to settle down soon.
I used to be 5'3" and my mum was 5'5", my sister 5'7", one brother 5'9", dad 5'11" and other brother 6'1". However, with osteoporosis, I have shrunk a lot. I was 5' for a while, but after I developed the kyphosis, I could only stand up to 4'8". I used to wear heels for going out, but they certainly wouldn't have been practical for working as a nurse! I do have one pair of shoes with wedge heels, but that's as high as I get now.
My friend's son is either a geologist or mineralologist, and had some gorgeous photos of rocks, so he turned a few into jigsaw puzzles. I saw the photos of them online and decided to order them for my family: one each for my grandsons, and a bigger one for my DS and DIL. Apparently all 3 puzzles were in one package, in gift bags, rather than wrapped (for going through customs), so I'm very happy they're there, and I'm very grateful to my friend for sending them for me!
I'm sorry you lost another member of your church. Your idea of getting 2 menus to choose from sounds good!
We've been having quite mild weather for a few days. It's been right around the freezing point. We had a lot of fog this morning! It doesn't look like we'll have a white Christmas. I'm sorry you had such high winds which blew your wreaths around.
I'm glad your Santa letters were received!
That website for glasses sounds wonderful. I think the last time I got glasses, they were over $500, and that was with re-using the old frames.
You will be having a busy weekend! Have fun with the carolling!

Kate - it sounds like you're all ready for Christmas!
My older grandson's birthday is January 13th, so I have to send his card and gift right after the holidays. He'll be 16 next month! He's looking forward to getting his driver's license.
I only get groceries every 2 weeks most of the time, and often buy frozen dinners, so I could use more freezer space!
How is your friend who had the cardiac catherization? I am also adding my prayers!
I'm sure you're having fun with your DGS today. When I was with the Big Sisters, we had an event each December for the kids to make gingerbread houses. That was fun!

I hope you're both having good days.

Mema – hooray for getting the cookies all done.

Are your glasses bifocals? I was wondering how that would work knowing where to put the dividing line?

We had a long string – a week – of dry chilly weather, mostly or partly sunny with highs in the 30s. It’s unusual to be in such a stable weather pattern. That’s changed now and we’re having some warmer (upper 40s) weather and rain over the weekend. Looks like after that we’ll be back in our usual oscillation w/ a few days of cold clear weather followed by a few warmer wet days. Probably not a white Christmas although some people are predicting a few show showers on the 24th or 25th.

DD is dropping off DGS this morning for his swim lessons since she has to go into her office to get some long overdue reports done. DH will take him to swim while I’m at a meeting and then we’ll have lunch together.

After that DH and I will take him back to the Y to make a Gingerbread House. They’ll have the kits and everything set up as a family event. Should be fun.

Kate - that's a good idea about sending cards to shut ins for b-days and things. I'm going to bring that up either on Sunday or else Tuesday when we're doing the lunch. Our pastor has been going over to an assisted living place so that might be the place to start.
Were you able to get your wrapping done and nativity up?
What kind of weather have you been having lately? We've been in our "cool" front for awhile now, but I'm liking it a lot! This week it's supposed to sunny during the day and temps in the low 70's and then lows into the 40's and 50's at night. So it's perfect! But today, we had such high winds that it blew one of my wreaths off the outside garage light. It had a ribbon stapled onto the wreath for hanging and so I took long twist ties. put it thru the ribbon and fastened it underneath the light and the wind ripped the staples right out of the wreath! I found it in the bushes in our front yard. The other wreath was blowing quite a bit, so I took that one down as well.

This morning I did errands - Post Office, Dollar Tree and Walmart. Then when I got home I finished my baking up! I am done!! emoticon I will get my DS's box packed over the weekend and take it to the P.O. on Monday. My DIL texted me tonight letting me know the Santa letters came in the mail today. They were having company tonight, so we're going to video call another day.

Tomorrow I have one of the ladies from my Monday Bible study coming over to see about helping her order glasses from Zenni. My DH discovered this website several years ago and between the 2 of us I bet we have ordered 15+ pairs of glasses. My glasses used to cost me anywhere from $250 up to $400! When I order them from Zenni they are less than $100! Usually around the $70 price! I have such a strong prescription that is why my glasses always are so expensive. And I have never had a pair that wasn't correct!

Then in the afternoon we are invited to DH's cousin's home again for an open house type gathering. Sunday is church, voter's meeting, then a play to go to - "Isaiah's Christmas Story", come home and eat an early dinner or late lunch, then I go caroling. Whew!

Hi Leslie! emoticon

Hope you enjoy your Saturday!

Mema – our church has a committee like that. They call it the “caring committee”. They do all the funeral meals and receptions but they also do things for the shut ins like sending cards for birthdays and making up little “May Baskets” of toiletries, etc.

A few more gifts came in the mail and need to be wrapped.

I still haven't put up the nativity but I plan to today. I have spin class this morning and then nothing else planned.

My friend said the catheterization showed no blockages so they're not sure why the blood pressure and heart rate went so high. Their theory is a perhaps a bad reaction to the medication they gave her for the sinus procedure. She still has lots of followups and testing they want to do.

I got my house all cleaned while DH was at his meeting today. After dinner tonight I made chocolate covered peanuts. Tomorrow I will bake the rest of my cookies and be done with all my baking! DH is going to see his dad tomorrow, so I'll make up a plate of cookies and candy for him.

We had another member of our church pass away. He had been very sick for awhile, so we knew this one was coming. I'll be bringing scalloped potatoes for the lunch after the funeral service on Tuesday. There are some women (myself included) who are going to set up a "lunch ladies" committee for funerals or other functions where we may be serving lunch. I'm hoping to get 2 set "menus" to choose from and a list of women we can call when we need the menu items. That way, I think it will keep it simple, won't get out of hand in expense for anyone and just be more organized.

Kate - my first husband was 6'3" and the 4 men he had in our wedding were all 6' or better and one of the guys was 6'7"! All my bridesmaids and maid of honor were all short. One gal was 5'5" I think, so the pictures of that wedding looked funny, too! But my DS must have gotten most of his gene's from my side of the family because he is only 5'7" and his wife is the same height. He's hoping his son will take after his dad's side of the family! LOL
I'm glad to hear your friend is home from the hospital and things seem to be good! Praise God!

Leslie - hope you are well!

Have a good day!

Mema – I didn’t get the nativity up. I did go to my meeting in the morning and take the dogs for a long walk in the afternoon.

My SIL has a birthday on Dec 21st and DH’s BIL is Dec 26th so they both get slighted around Christmas. DGS and my DS are both on Jan 17th so there is some break but is still feels close to the holidays.

My brother was the tallest in my family and he was 5’7”. My mom always told my sister and I to marry some one tall. My DH is 6’ and everyone in his family is over 5’6”. The wedding pictures were funny w/ him towering above my family and me looking so short among his family.

Leslie - hope your back is feeling better after a day of resting and reading.

Thanks for the prayers for my friend. We got a text from her husband last night saying they were coming home from that hospital and all went well. No details yet.

I got more cookies baked today and they are in the freezer. I have to bake my Spritz and DS's batch of chocolate chips and then I can pack his box for him.

Church was this afternoon and when I got home DH wanted stuffed peppers for dinner. I don't think I have anything to do tomorrow unless I want to finish my baking. Which I may do. DH has a meeting in the afternoon up at the clubhouse, so he'll be gone for a couple of hours.

My social calendar is suddenly filling up! We have a small get together on Saturday and on Sunday, I'm going caroling with a bunch here in our club. We'll meet up at the clubhouse on our golf carts and go to the older folks and/or sick and/or one's who lost a spouse recently. I haven't done it in a few years, so it will be fun to go once again. The people just love when we come.

Kate - Glad you got your tree decorated and stockings hung. Did you get to your Nativity set today? Nice that you got your DGS another birthday gift. My DS's birthday is January 1st! I sometimes think kids with b-days in Dec/Jan can sometimes get slighted. Not necessarily in presents, but just in the celebration being Christmas is close or just over.
My mom was 4'11" and most of her brothers and sisters were very short, too. The 2 youngest brothers were the tallest and they were probably about 5'10" or 11".
I'm sorry to hear about your best friend being in the hospital. I will certainly keep her in my prayers.

Leslie - I hope you are resting your back if it's still hurting you. Take care!

Have a Thankful Thursday!

Yesterday I decorated the tree and hung the stockings. I still have the Nativity to set up and I’ll be done. I went out yesterday to get one more gift for my DH and saw a gift that I knew DGS would love so I bought it and wrapped it in birthday themed paper. His birthday is in the middle of January.

Mema – somehow, I pictured you as taller. My mom was 5’1” and my sister is 4’11”. I was the “tall girl” at 5’4”.

I think a lot of younger people tend to move jobs more frequently. It’s not something our generation used to do. Sounds like he’s being wise about having a new job before he leaves the old one.

Leslie – sorry your back is hurting. Is that still left over from moving the heavy tote?

Nice to know that the puzzles arrived early for your DS. Hope all 3 were there.

I never used to need a separate freezer. I just bought what we needed on a weekly basis. But w/ the meat coming monthly and more produce to freeze during the summer, the regular freezer was over flowing. I chose the tiny one b/c it fit in the corner of my kitchen. I didn’t want to be running down the basement to look for things and our garage is a totally separate building w/ no heat.

My best friend is in the hospital getting a cardiac catheterization today. She went in on Monday to have some minor procedure (dilating a part of her sinus passage) and ended up w/ really high blood pressure and heart rate. They did some stress testing and think there is a blockage of blood flow to part of her heart. Prayers would be appreciated. She’s young – mid 50’s – and hasn’t had heart problems so it was quite a surprise.

Seems like it was another busy day. But I didn't get up this morning until about 10:00. I went to bed very late and didn't sleep that well. So I rushed to get ready to leave for my meeting. But I had to make a couple of stops ahead of time.

When I got home, I started on laundry and did a few other things around the house. Made dinner, finished my laundry, got caught up on some emails. And then my DS called me on his way home from his meeting. So we got to chat for about 1/2 hour. He started a new job and wanted to tell me about it. He's learning the parts department of a semi truck company. Ordering parts, getting them to the service techs and then doing warranty paperwork as well. I hope this one works out for him. He's left several jobs in the past couple of years. Always has a new job before he leaves his old jobs, but I told him he's got to get it figured out. His wife works for the Department of Corrections for the State of MN and so she carries the insurance for the family, but she has anxiety issues and I told him job hopping doesn't help that situation. I can only give my opinion and then leave it at that. It's nice that we are both in AA so talking with him on certain issues, he gets it.

Tomorrow all I have is Advent service, so I think I will bake tomorrow. I didn't get any baking done today.

Kate - I love that little freezer! And I like the baskets, that would be nice to just pull out a basket w/out having to keep the door open. DH put dollar tree tubs (the size that would fit in your kitchen sink) in our chest freezers, so that helps. I can pull out a tub and close the door. Especially when it gets so hot down here.
That's a nice feeling to get your presents wrapped. I remember those days.
Did you get to your tree today?

Leslie - Do you think you'll need to go to the doctor for your back? Maybe get a muscle relaxer or something?
Because I'm only 5' tall, I've been so used to wearing heels all my life. When I lived in Milwaukee and worked at Casual Corner in the Mayfair Mall, I would have to be on my feet for 8 hours while at work - and in heels! My feet then would get a bit tired, but once I rested them I was good to go! Even last year I bought a pair of pumps that had 4" heels and wore them all afternoon and evening at a wedding. But I wasn't on my feet the whole time.
I hope your son received all of the puzzles you sent him. What do you mean when you said your friend's son MAKES puzzles? That sounds interesting.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Mema - wow, I can't imagine wearing heels for hours. I don't wear them at all any more. My balance isn't good, and I don't want a sprained or broken ankle.
You certainly bake a lot of cookies, but you have lots of ways to use them.
I used to knit sweaters, and had started a multi-coloured rugby sweater which I was going to give my grandson, but that was a long time ago! So I have yarn in all those colours, and also 2 large skeins (one grey and one cream coloured) yarn that I was going to use to make scarves, but I really don't knit any more. I used to do it while watching TV, but I don't do much of that any more either. I will continue to knit dishcloths because I'll need to replace the ones I am using, and I have lots of yarn for that.

Kate - Your small freezer looks great! There really isn't room here to have a freezer besides the one in the fridge.
How scary to have had things burning in the garbage chute in the building you used to live in with the incinerator. My concern here is just plugging the chute. I am on the second floor and there are 8 floors here, so there could potentially be a big backup! I can't imagine someone trying to put a Christmas tree down the chute!
My son has already received a package that my friend sent for me. Now I've written to her to see if there is one package or 3... I know I bought 3 puzzles that her son has made, but I'm not sure how she sent them.

I'm not getting a lot done today because I have a lot of back pain. I'm going to go and read now.

Have a great day!

Mema – I have about a 2 hour limit in heels b/f I have to get them off my feet.

Sounds like you have every reason to be tired out. You sure did a lot in one day.

The only cookies I made this year are the ones for the college care packages. I think there were about 5-6 dozen. DH and I had a few for dessert that night. Since my addiction is to sweets, it doesn’t make sense for me to keep things like that in the house.

I bought myself a tiny (3 cubic ft) freezer to store stuff. I was having trouble fitting everything in the freezer part of my fridge. I like that it has baskets that I can just pull out and go through w/o leaving the door hanging open. We get our meat delivered once a month and it fits perfectly in one basket. Another basket has frozen fruit and the smaller bottom basket has “ingredients” like my nut flours and nuts.

Leslie – glad you got back to your exercise class.

I can imagine you folding and taping or tying pillows to make them fit down the trash chute. When we were newlyweds, we lived in a building w/ an incinerator and sometimes people would drop things down that chute that would get caught and catch fire. Once someone stuffed a Christmas tree into the chute.

I think my uncle flies home to Edmonton to see his kids fairly frequently. He probably gets any medical care he needs then.

I got all my Christmas gifts wrapped yesterday except for a few that haven’t arrived yet. I’m thinking I need to pull out one or two of DGS’s and set them aside for his birthday next month. I still haven’t started on the tree so I think that will be this afternoon’s project.

36.5 pounds gone, 17.5 more pounds is my 2020 goal.

It was a tiring day. We had the funeral service this morning. It was very nice. Our pastor, right at the end of his sermon when he was saying more personal things about the man that passed, had a really tough time. He was really choked up and had to stop a couple of times to get himself composed. Which, then made everyone else tear up, too! The service itself was at a funeral home, then quite a few of the people went to the cemetery for the committal. There was also the Honor Guard as he was a WWII vet. So, DH and I went back to our house, I picked up my scalloped potatoes and he dropped me off at church. I finished baking those there and helped get everything set up and out on the serving tables, then helped clean up afterwards. The "family" whose father passed away, provided the meat (ham) and then a bunch of women filled in the rest of the food. It was a long morning/early afternoon. And I had high heels on so my feet were sore and tired from being on them all that time.

Then this evening I baked peanut butter cookies while I watched CMA Country Christmas on TV. So, I am tired out!

Tomorrow I have to go to Dollar Tree and the post office and then my meeting. I think I will bake my sugar cookies tomorrow, too.

Leslie - I'm glad you were able to get to exercise. I keep thinking that I need to get out to walk, but just have not been in the mood. I think I have to "psyche" myself up again and then make a plan to start!
I guess when I figure it out, I usually get my haircut every 6-8 weeks.
Did you have a lot of yarn to give away? What did you use it for in the past? I used to crochet a little. Mostly I made afghans (my mom taught me) and did make some dish washing cloths.

Kate - I usually will try one or 2 cookies right after I make them, just to make sure they turned out ok. But then I'll package up a big box for my DS, make a small container for my FIL and bring some to Bible Study. Then I'll freeze a bunch of them (depending on how many cookies I have left) and then just bring out a half dozen or so weeks and months after Christmas for DH. So, they end up lasting us most of the winter if I make a lot. We have 2 chest freezers out in our garage, so I have plenty of freezer space. We needed the extra freezer for juice, but this year, I don't think we'll have much.
I mentioned that we lost our Tangelo, and our Grapefruit is looking a bit strange. We had 2 flowerings on the tree last spring. It blossomed in February or around that time, then we noticed it was blossoming again in April. So we have large grapefruits and small ones on the tree right now. DH's not sure what is going on with it. We have a good local nursery near us that he will go and talk with them about it.
I don't think I could retire in another country - going to another state is bad enough! LOL I'm always wondering what is going on "back home". I do have an app on my phone from the local TV station up there, so I get news updates from them. And MN/WI will just always be home for me. I even signed up for emails from "Explore MN" that lists different events that are happening weekly.
I've found I prefer to go shopping the day after Christmas instead of "Black Friday" because of the discounts. That's when I buy next year's Christmas cards or like last year I bought new wreaths. This year I'm going to need new lights for my tree. So I'll get those. We send all our kids money for Christmas so I don't have to do much wrapping. I will buy a couple of things for Dakota and Ryan but I have the things shipped to my DS's house and I end up using my DIL's wrapping paper! Kind of like your DD! emoticon

Well, I'd better get to bed. Enjoy your Tuesday!

I finally got back to the exercise class this morning after missing 2 whole weeks. I had appointments both Wednesdays, and 2 weeks ago Monday I was just not feeling up to it for some reason, and last Monday I was too sore from hoisting around tote boxes all weekend, and getting started sorting out my big closet. Next I want to toss the pillows I had been using for driving. They're useless for anything else. I thought I needed to tie them up so they'll go down the chute easily and not plaster themselves to the wall of the chute. I don't have any string, but I do have yarn, which I'll also be giving away. Or, I could tape them... I think that will be a project for tomorrow when I have no other obligations.

Mema - that's very funny about your GD asking what you and your DH do when they are not there! Ha.
I'm very glad you finally got your pictures and can now mail your cards. It's a good thing you didn't wait until the last minute to do this.
That's nice to have a lunch after the funeral today. I've never had hot foods in that situation, just 'finger foods'.
I'm very sorry to hear about the death of your uncle. In my family, I am the oldest, with the exception of one cousin who is about 2 years older. Of the 4 of us, both of our brothers have died, leaving me (oldest) and my sister (youngest).
I just happened to notice I need my hair cut every 2 months, and my toenails cut every 2 months also - I'm glad they're not in the same months so I can spread out the cost.

Kate - that's interesting that your surviving uncle is living in the Dominican Republic. The cost of living might be less, but I would probably worry about the medical care, and available services...
I was glad to get my laptop back so quickly too!
'English immersion' - ha! That sounds right. We had a few students from other countries when I was growing up, Ukraine, Lithuania, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands are the ones I remember. It was soon after the end of WWII then.
I'm glad your DH has replaced the burnt out garlands.
Too bad I couldn't have given you all the wrapping paper I had in my large tote box last week, but I'm sure whoever picked it up was happy to get it.
Have fun decorating your tree!

Mema – glad you got your photos finally and can mail your cards.

Sorry for the loss of your uncle. My mom had 4 younger brothers and only one of them is still alive. He lives mostly in a retirement place in the Dominican Republic. He says his retirement money goes much farther there.

That’s a lot of cookies you’re making. I would find it hard to resist eating them while baking.

Leslie – good to hear from you. I’m glad you were able to get your laptop fixed so quickly.

DGS’s school and neighborhood has lots of immigrants – many of them from Central American countries but also some middle eastern countries as well. When I go to pick him up after school once in a while, the parents and kids waiting around me are mostly speaking Spanish. I guess you could call it an “English Immersion” school for all the kids who don’t speak English at home. LOL

DH went out yesterday afternoon and replaced the two burnt out garlands w/ the new ones I bought. I was upstairs wrapping Christmas gifts. Last year, my DD used my paper to wrap gifts the day before Christmas and used almost all of it. I hadn't realized I was so low on paper. I had to go out and buy more. I usually buy wrapping paper the day after Christmas when it's heavily discounted.

Today I have an OA meeting and then I'll finish the wrapping. I need to bring down some ornaments and put them on the tree before I put gifts under it.

I had to run to Walmart today and my pictures were in! emoticon So I can put my cards in the mail and be finished with that. I baked one batch of chocolate chip cookies and yes, they turned out just fine with the mini chips. Actually, I think I prefer them! Ha!

Then I partially baked a pan of scalloped potatoes to take to church tomorrow after the funeral. DH and I are just going to the funeral and skipping the interment (mainly because DH can't stand that long). So, we'll go home and pick up my potatoes and I can finish baking them at church before the rest of the folks get there. We're having a lunch after the funeral and burial.

I will try and bake some more cookies tomorrow afternoon and/or evening.

I don't remember if I told you or not, but I had an uncle in FL who was taken ill (ended up in the hospital) was there for several days, then came home, was on hospice for a week or two - from information I'm getting. Another uncle called him on Thanksgiving and he was doing very well until last Friday he passed away! He was having kidney problems and supposed to get dialysis, but refused that. He only had 5% of his kidney's working, so that could explain the sudden death. So, my mom's family of 9 children are now down to 5. The 2 oldest siblings are gone (my mom and an uncle) and the 2 youngest siblings are gone (2 uncles) which I found curious - oldest and youngest.

Leslie - Welcome Back! I'm sorry to hear you had problems with your laptop but glad you got it back.
How nice that your friend treated you to lunch! And your favorite, too!
I guess I've never thought about when I get my haircut - odd or even months! That's interesting. I do need a pedicure myself.
My DH asked me last week if I was going to get the massage package I had last year. I told him I might, but will wait until after I get back from my MN trip.

Kate - DH was feeling better the first day of antibiotics, then the 2nd day not so good, but now good again. So, not sure why that happened, but I think he's on the mend now.
Sounds like your DGS found some great gifts!
Your story about your Christmas tree and DGS reminds me of one of our granddaughters (on my husband's side) was up at the cabin and she and her family come up quite often. My DH was in his TV room and had been there quite a bit that week-end for some reason, and my DGD asked, What do you and grandpa do when we're not here? emoticon Like we don't have a life or anything if their not up here! I thought that was so funny.

Have a good Monday!

I'm so sorry I've been absent! My laptop quit working on Tuesday. I was glad my friend was taking me out after my doctor's appointment Wednesday. The computer shop was our first stop. My laptop needed a new keyboard, which had to be ordered. I got it back late Thursday, and I've spent the last 2 days wading through almost 300 emails that came in while I didn't have the laptop.
We did a few other errands on Wednesday, and then my friend treated ME to lunch, which was lovely. I had my favourite Thai Shrimp Curry Bowl! I probably won't see her again until January because she'll be dog/house sitting from the 15th - 23rd, then I'm sure she'll be busy with her parents over the holidays.
I'm sorry you've both had funerals to attend.

Mema - How nice of your pastor to give you that book! I still have the prayer book my grandmother gave me when I was confirmed in the Anglican church. It has the liturgy for regular Sundays, and all 'special' events, and the catechism, and hymns too! I do read bits of it, mostly hymns, from time to time still.
The parade sounded great!
I'm glad you like your new haircut. I get mine cut in 'odd' months, and a 'mini' pedicure in 'even' months; I hope I can get that done this week!
You've really been making a lot of cookies - good for you! I have also used the mini chips unintentionally, but they were fine.
The packaged veggies for stir fries sound like a great idea! I'll have to see if I can get them here too.
I'm so sorry your pictures weren't ready for you when they were supposed to be! I hope you either have them by now, or will get them tomorrow.
Too bad there were no brats at the cookout, but Polish sausage sounds good too!

Kate - I'm sure those 22 students really appreciated the care packages!
It's great that you were able to go to your DGS's program, especially since his parents couldn't be there. I'm glad you were able to find a parking spot. That's very sad that his school has so few things that other schools take for granted, especially potable water!! It's really awful that they don't have that! What about kids whose families can't afford bottled water? Is he in a 'Spanish immersion' school, or are there just a lot of Spanish-speaking kids at his school? (We have 'French immersion' schools here - everything is taught in French.) I guess if they only have 1 month of Spanish, it is not 'immersion'...
I have never been to a Trader Joe's, but have heard good things about them.
I also knit those cloths - actually, I need to get back to it. I use them for dishcloths. Your DGS's choices for gifts for his mom sound perfect! What are her favourite colours?
That's hilarious, his wondering how you got the tree up last year without his help - hahaha!

I hope you both have lovely Sundays!

Mema – the parade sounds like fun. Hope it draws some new folks to your church.

How is your DH feeling now that he’s been on the antibiotics for a couple days?

Yesterday I took DGS to swim class and then to a small craft fair to shop for his mom’s Christmas gift. He chose a small hand-knit wash cloth that can be used either for dishes or for your face. It’s nice and nubbly so I use the one I got a year ago for my face. It didn’t cost much so I said we’d walk through the rest of the fair and see if he saw anything else. We were in the last aisle when he made a beeline for a hand made ceramic jug/vase. It’s really lovely and the colors are my DD’s favorite. I think it’s a really good choice.

After lunch we had him help us put the tree up – screwing the stand tight, plugging in the lights, helping direct each section into the hole. I thanked him and he asked me “How did you get it done last year w/o my help?” emoticon

I just got home from the parade. It was a lot of fun even though it was chilly outside! We were riding in the back of a pick-up truck with music and lights that spelled out ZION and then painted on below Lutheran Church with the address. There were quite a few floats and at least one band that happened to be right behind us. The couple that brought the truck had their granddaughter (13 yrs.) and 5 of her friends along to pass out the candy so I didn't have to walk and do that. Worked out well! emoticon

This was like a "trial run" to see what it was all about. Next year we're going to see about building a float! I told them I was all in for that!

Earlier I went down the block to the open house and that was fun. Quite a few people stopped in. And she had a lot of food.

So it was a fun day.

Kate - Hope you get a warm day tp finish your decorating. And nice that you got something new!
The plastic tote does work out very well. My DH took some measurements and figured it out. At first when I saw it, I didn't think it was going to be big enough. It wasn't as long as our box, but higher. Works perfect.

Enjoy your Sunday!

Mema – my MIL used to have a “breeze way” where she would store things in the winter. It was a like a wide hallway with jalousie windows on both sides that connected the house to the garage.

I ended up not getting anything done in the afternoon. I went to Walmart yesterday after spin class. I bought two new garlands to replace the two w/o lights. I’ll have to check the weather forecast so see what day will be warmer so I can put them out.

Sorry about the missing photos. That’s a disappointment.

Our tree box is on the 3 floor so it’s awkward to bring it down. That’s a good idea about a tote as our box is getting a bit ragged, too. I’ll have to measure the pieces when I have them out this time and see if I can find the right size.

I had to go to Walmart today for a few things, but also to see if my pictures (the one of the grand kids hugging each other) for my Christmas cards were in. They were supposed to be in on Tuesday. They weren't there and the kid who was helping me was on the phone talking to someone about my order. It ends up, they never got the order (although I have an order #) and so they had to re-order the prints. I have had this happen before to me. I'm not sure what happens when I place my online order. The kid thought my pictures would be ready in about an hour and was going to call me. No call today! So I don't know when they will be done. If I don't hear from them over the week-end I'll go in on Monday. I try to stay away on week-ends because it's so busy. But talk about disappointment! Sigh! My cards have been ready for several days.

Tomorrow I'm going to an open house down the street from us. Just a holiday get together from 2-4. I won't stay the whole time. DH has some sort of a sinus/ear infection and so not feeling well. He went to the doctor yesterday and they gave him an antibiotic. I've got the parade to go to tomorrow evening. DH offered to bring me up to the starting place and then pick me back up. That was nice. But it's going to be chilly to be outside! Temps will be in the 50's with a strong North wind. I'll have to dress warm.

Kate - Those cookies with the little Hershey's kiss on them are cute. The cookie itself is just a little bit larger than the kiss. They look nice and add color.
When I was a kid, we had a small enclosed porch (more like an entryway) in our house and my mom and I would bake a LOT of cookies and candies and we would keep them all out on the porch in containers because it was so cold out there! We don't have that here that's for sure. And I hate to turn on the oven while we have the A/C going! Seems a little counterproductive! LOL
Did you get your decorating done? I used to keep my tree in the attic, but the box was so big and heavy that we now keep it under my laundry table in the garage. And we bought a large plastic tote to put it in as the box was getting pretty ragged.

Leslie - I hope everything is OK.

Have a wonderful Saturday!

Leslie – is your back OK? Did you get out for your errands?

Mema – I’ve made spritz cookies, the other kind is a new one to me. Sounds like they would be fun and cute.

It’s funny to think of having to wait for it to cool off to bake when we’re so cold here. But I have a friend from Australia, who wrote this, "I associate this time of year with HOT days and nights, barbecues, swimming in the ocean and eating seafood for Christmas day lunch... so being cold and wet in Paris for Christmas doesn't bother me so much as it doesn't really *feel* like Christmas"

I'm going to do some decorating today - maybe everything but the tree? Or perhaps I'll get DH to bring the tree down from the attic. And I need to go through all the gifts I have bought and make a list of what I still need. I know I need to get something for DD still. I think I have stuff for everyone else. Or maybe I'll do some shopping and let the decorating wait? Decisions, decisions. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Made the rest of my cookie dough - spritz and another type - they are little round cookies tinted either pink or green with a Hershey's candy cane kiss or Hershey's mint truffle kiss on them. And I made a new candy - melted vanilla candy coating with peanut butter mixed in. Spread that on a cookie sheet, melt a pkg of chocolate chips and then swirl that onto the peanut butter layer and put in the fridge. After it hardens, break it up into pieces. Tastes very similar to Reese's Peanut Butter cups.

Sunday and Monday it will cool off, so I will probably start baking. I'd like to get a box off to my DS next week.

Kate - That's too bad about your DGS's school. I can't imagine not having drinkable water at a school.
We just bought a package of 4 individual bags of veggies for stir fry from Sam's Club and it's very good. I have my own sauce that I make. We had been buying some from Walmart, but they stopped carrying it so I'm glad DH found this. I do like stir fry.
Your mom was right - I'm sure my cookies will taste just the same - mini chips or regular. Actually I'm thinking, the cookies may end up with more chips than usual. LOL
I think for our funeral, we've decided to go just to the funeral instead of the viewing, then the funeral, too.

Leslie - Hi! Hope all is well!

Happy Friday!! emoticon

Mema – DGS goes to an inner city school in a poorer neighborhood. They have no parking lot, no playground, no library, no kitchen, and no drinkable water. All the kids have to bring water from home. I hate seeing him in such a poorly equipped school. And they miss a lot of other stuff, too. Like the Spanish teacher who covers the entire school - each classroom gets one month of Spanish lessons per year. Same w/ the science teacher.

I do like Trader Joe’s. They have their own brand and some of the things they make are not available anywhere else. There is a frozen Asian veggie mix w/ a sauce packet that I use for all my stir fries, and a roasted veggie mix that I use w/ meatballs for a quick lunch. I buy their bulk packages of bacon ends and pieces for cooking up bacon bits at a really good price.

I see cookies w/ chocolate ‘chunks’ so I guess yours went the opposite way w/ the mini chips. As my mom always said – it still tastes the same!

My husband went to the viewing on Sunday evening for the funeral we went to but I stayed home w/ a headache. We both went to the funeral.

I met with my sponsor today and had a really good conversation with her. She will be going to a quilting retreat next week, so we won't meet.

I got my Christmas letters copied up at the clubhouse and then came home and mixed up 3 batches of cookie dough. Two chocolate chip and 1 sugar cookie. One of the batches of chocolate chip (which makes about 5 dz.) I'll send all of those to DS. And then add some of the other kinds as well. But chocolate chip is by far his favorite.

But I got a surprise when I was mixing up the first batch of chocolate chip. When it came time to add the chips, I realized I bought "mini" chips! At first, I thought, Oh, no! But then I dumped them in and I think it will be fine.

Went to the second Advent service and found out all the details on the upcoming funeral. It will be Monday morning. They will have a viewing the day before, but I think DH and I are just going to go to the service.

Kate - The program of your DGS's sounds like it was a fun little event. And I'm sure your DGS was so happy to have you there.
Glad you had plenty of time to get your parking spot. They don't have a parking lot at the school?
That is funny what your old pastor said about his suits!
I have never been in a Trader Joe's, but have heard a lot about them. They don't have one down here that I'm aware of and up in WI, I think the closest one would be in the Twin Cities.

Leslie - Hope you are doing well!

Enjoy your Thursday!

Leslie - I hope you are feeling better today and not so sore. Was your friend able to come over and take you out for your errands?

Mema – sounds like a good reference book when you’re trying to understand a particular point of doctrine. Our church is part of a very small denomination so we don’t have that kind of book. We do have a detailed statement of faith that includes our beliefs about our faith. New members study that when they want to join the church.

Sorry about the death of your long time member. Sounds similar to the funeral we just went to on Monday. Our old pastor came and participated in that funeral. It was nice to see him and his wife again. He joked that he still had 3 suits that he usually wore to funerals but now that he’s retired, only one of them still fit. Like your old pastor, he was running out of energy the last few years and also suffered from a recurrence of depression that made it hard for him to do all the things he wanted to do.

I had my haircut just before I went to CA so I’m not going again until January. I’ll have it cut and highlighted just before my anniversary.

I got down to the school with lots of time to spare and I was glad I did b/c I had to go around the block 3 or 4 times before I found a spot. I passed it the first time since it was marked w/ a handicap only sign but then I realized there was just enough room to pull back far enough that my hood was behind the handicap space.

The program was short. The kids sang their songs in Spanish and then some of the kids read their hand made books, written in Spanish, out loud. DGS wasn’t one who went up front so he read his to me at the table. They had a little snack and then the parents left. Some of the kids went home w/ their folks but at least one other boy was there from the after school group – feeling a little bummed that his dad had to go back to work and he had to stay.

I took the back roads home from Boston and stopped at a store that does educational supplies and games to pick up a few Christmas presents and stocking stuffers for DGS. And then to Trader Joe’s for some of the things they have that I can’t get anywhere else.

36.5 pounds gone, 17.5 more pounds is my 2020 goal.

Another day of running. Went to Bible study this morning and my pastor gave me a book. It is the Book of Concord . It's what Lutherans use as further explanation of what we believe based on the Bible. It goes into depth explaining the creeds or confessions we say as well as The Catechism, plus a lot of other information - it's a hard bound book that usually costs about $25 and he said he wanted me to have it because I ask a lot of questions in Bible study. Not that he doesn't want to answer them, more that I can get a more detailed answer than he may have time for in Bible study. I thought it was a very nice gift! It has over 700 pages!

So I came home, dropped off my Bible and that book and then went to my meeting. After that again I stopped home and then went and got my hair cut. And she really did a nice job this time. Not that she doesn't usually, but this cut seems better. I'll know for sure tomorrow when I'm curling it!

We did get some sad news this evening. One of our long time church members (he was 95) just passed away. He was still driving himself to church and living alone. He is the father of the president of our congregation. He had been battling cancer over the summer with chemo, but seemed to bounce back. But it sounds like his lungs started to shut down and they brought him to the hospital a few days ago. So, we'll be attending that service for sure.

I will meet with my sponsor tomorrow and then when I get home I'll stop at the clubhouse and get copies made of my Christmas letter so I can get my cards in the mail. We have church tomorrow at 4 for Advent and I'm hoping to start mixing up dough for my cookies. At least get that part done, then I can bake them later.

We're going to watch the Netflix DVD - 12 Strong. I'll let you know if it's any good. Thought I would add this - the movie was VERY good. It was about a mission over in Afghanistan right after the 9-11 attacks happened.

Kate - We have a Christmas tree at church (our smaller one in the fellowship room) that had permanent lights on it and a section went out, so we just put our own lights on it and it looks fine.
I think our pastor would like to get younger people into our church, as well. Our old pastor, (he was a great pastor) but just did not have the energy our new pastor has for getting out into the community.
Glad to hear you and your DH were able to get your lights up. My DH put ours up yesterday. All around the garage door and then on some of the bushes in the front yard. Our garage also faces the street, so it looks nice. The street we live on is Lucy Dr and we have a street sign on the corner across the street from our house. Well, our neighbor decorated the street sign (it's not very tall - these are city streets, but a secured club) with lights and then had Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy and Linus characters on the ground next to the sign all lit up! It looks real cute.
How nice that you can go and see your DGS. My mom did that occasionally with my DS when he was in grade school and I couldn't be there. Mostly, tho' I think it was his soccer games because those were right after school and I was still working. Usually any other type of program it was scheduled in the evening which was nice. I did make all of his basketball games - they were either Friday night or Saturday - seemed like mostly Saturdays.
What kind of program was it?

Leslie - hope your back is feeling better.

Happy Hump day!

Mema – I can see how it would take time to get used to being back in Texas but not having your mom there. That’s a transition you didn’t face while you were away all summer.

My tree has the lights permanently mounted on the tree. I don’t know what I’d do if they went out.

My church is just a bit bigger than yours. We usually have between 100 and 150 there on a Sunday morning. And it also has an older congregation compared to the surrounding community. We’re missing the people in their 20’s and 30’s. The goal over the next few years is to fill in that gap by attracting new people.

Leslie – we used to have something like that “goods exchange” but we called it “bulk trash day” which meant you could put out big items that normally wouldn’t be picked up. The town has a new trash company and they take big items any week so stuff goes out all year long. It’s amazing how many of the big items get claimed before the truck comes by.

We’re not affiliated w/ any college. The students we send the packages to are either members of the church or children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews of members. We sent out 22 boxes this year and only 4 were to members. The rest were requested by members for various relatives.

The funeral yesterday was lovely. Such a testimony to a gentle, kind man. He and his wife never had children but they certainly nourished several generations of people in the church. We decided to skip the trip to the cemetery and came home instead.

Since it was a mild day, I asked DH to take a few hours off work and help me put up the outside lights. That’s all done, but several of the garlands that I loop over the porch railings don’t light up. DH changed the fuses in those strings but they still didn’t light up. I think it’s time to replace them.

Today I’m driving down to Boston to see DGS in a little school project demonstration. He gets a bit sad b/c his parents can rarely be there. He says he’s the “only one” w/no family there. That’s probably not true but he feels that way. I guess my DD told him to ask grandma, b/c this time he brought the sign up form to me.

I had a busy day today. Started with Bible study, then the gal who is leading it wanted to talk afterwards, so I talked with her for about 45 minutes. Then went home, got my car and went to Dollar Tree and Walmart. Came home in time to change clothes and get ready for our cook out. That went very well and I had a great time chatting with some people I haven't seen in awhile. It's really nice to be getting out and doing things without the worry of my mom which used to overshadow me. It's a strange feeling. We got home about 6:30.

Tomorrow I have Bible study at church and my AA meeting. And get my hair cut.

I have a string of lights out on my tree. emoticon And there's no way to take it off to put another one back on because of all the decorations - mainly the deco mesh I put on every year. So I think I'm going to try and just add another string - it's towards the top, so it's not quite as noticeable as it would be on the bottom, but just a little frustrating. I think almost all of my lights are new - but that must not have been one of the new ones! Go figure!

Leslie - I'm sorry your back is still sore. Were you able to take another pain pill?
I'm glad you are able to get rid of your totes - one way or another! LOL
When I had Bible study at my house, I always had coffee or hot tea for the ladies. My friend has water on the table. Most of the time, I think everyone has had their fill of coffee by 10:30 in the morning. And around the holidays, someone will bring in something they have baked or bought for a little treat.
Oh, and they didn't have brats tonight at the cook out. It was hot dogs and polish sausage. The polish sausage was good.
Our church is rather small. Or at least small for the people who show up. We have been setting up for about 100 for communion now. In the summer months, that figure drops to about 30-40 people. But we're mostly a "Winter Texan" church, which means most of us are old! So, that narrows down the field of people who can help with things. But so far, things are going well. I just hope we all don't get burned out - it does seem like our Pastor is open to anything and everything. And sometimes, we just can't do it all. It ends up the same group doing everything. But so far so good.
Did you end up with a lot of snow?

Kate - How nice that your church makes the care packages for those students! I bet they love getting them.
Nice that you've got people returning to your church, too. Our attendance is up as well. Maybe that's a good sign all around!
Sorry to hear about your friend's passing, but glad you have fond memories of he and his wife being so welcoming.

Have a great day!

emoticon

Well, after I did all that work getting that big tote box out yesterday, NOW my friend says she would like it! I told her I would see if it's still there, and bring it back if I could. However, after I got dressed, I could hear some people apparently working in the hall, so I waited. Now I have decided my back is just too sore. If it's still there when my housekeeper is here tomorrow, I will ask her to bring it back. I told my friend yesterday morning that I would be taking it out, but she didn't say anything then. Well, the good news is, one way or the other, it will be gone by Wednesday. I have emptied another tote box this morning, so I'll save that one for her. She needs them to put out-of-season clothes in the attic.
My back is sore enough this morning that I didn't make it to the exercise class.

Mema - You certainly got a lot done yesterday!
I hope your Bible study is good today, and I'm sure you're happy it's at someone else's house. Is coffee served during, or after it?
You really make a lot of special food for Christmas! It's nice that you give most of it away. I'm sure it will be appreciated by the recipients!
The cookout sounds good - I love brats.
I'm glad you're looking forward to the parade. It sounds like fun. Is your church/congregation very big?

Kate - That's very nice of your church to give care packages to the students! Are you affiliated with a particular college?
We had rain most of the day yesterday, and even a thunderstorm around dinner time last night! When I got up this morning, it was snowing and the grass was covered again.
There are two 'goods exchange days' here - one in the spring, and the other in the fall. People can put things out that they no longer want, and people with trucks or other vehicles, prowl the neighbourhoods, picking things up. Whatever hasn't been taken by the end of the day must be brought back away from the curb or sidewalk. When I lived in a flat before living here, I participated in that, but we can't do that here. However, putting things out by the elevators works well here.
I'm very sorry you will be going to a funeral today. It was nice of that man and his wife to welcome you when you first went to that church. No doubt he has been lonely as a widower.

I hope your days go well.

Mema – you do make a lot of Christmas goodies w/ the cookies and candy. I rarely make sweets any more but I did make several dozen cookies on Saturday night to take to church on Sunday for “college student care packages”. Every year the church sends boxes of cookies out to help the students get through finals week.

It sounds like your church is really focusing on reaching out to the town. I’m hoping w/ our new pastor, that we will be doing something like that, too. Even though he’s only been here 2 months, a number of people who had stopped coming during the interim have returned.

Leslie – we had rain pretty much all day Sunday. It was originally forecast to be over by early afternoon but moved out more slowly.

Sorry your back is sore from moving the tote. It must have been heavy. Nice that people are able to pick up and use the things you put out. We sometimes put bigger things out on the street the day before trash day and they get picked up by interested passer-bys.

We have a funeral to go to this morning. It’s an elderly gentleman who has been active in our church for 60 odd years. He and his wife were some of the first ones to welcome us when we started attended. His wife passed away over a decade ago and he’s been in failing health for a while. One of those sad “blessings”.

Today I did my laundry, worked on my Bible study for tomorrow and did 3 months of hymns so I'm caught up until July. We do have a meeting the end of January and so all of us will work on April, May and June. I just like to be ahead of the game if I can.

Tomorrow is Bible study and I have to go to Walmart. I will pick up all my baking stuff. Hopefully I'll get dough mixed up for all of the cookies and then when it's cool I can just put them on the cookie sheets and bake them. And I make a few different kinds of candy, too. I like to send a fair-sized box up to my DS and his family. And I'll give a nice plate to my FIL, so it won't all be in my house! Yikes! That would not be good. Tomorrow afternoon we have a hot dog/brat cook out at an outdoor pavilion just down the street from us. It is for the Investor's Club my DH is in, so that should be fun.

Found out today, our church is going to be in the local city Christmas parade on Saturday! We're going to decorate a pick-up truck with lights and our church name, sing Christmas carols along the parade route sitting in the back of the pick-up and give out bookmarks with candy attached to them! I think it will be fun! I'm not sure our church has ever participated in the parade. We have an "Outreach Coordinator" so that is making a big difference in getting our name out in the community again. For whatever reason, though, our attendance is up from last year at this time, so that's a good thing.

Leslie - Glad to hear you got so much done, but I'm sorry you hurt your back doing it all. I hope the pain pill helped.
That is too bad about your postal worker claiming he tried to deliver your package. Is there a Postmaster you could call just to let them know? I hope your housekeeper can get the package for you.

Kate - Glad to hear you got rid of all the dirt in your driveway. I'm sure something will come up next spring and you'll be able to put it to good use. I'm sure it was a good feeling to get it off the driveway and also getting rid of some of the leaves.
Are you getting a lot of rain?
I saw parts of the Twin Cities got quite a bit of snow - 7" in some places. But where my DS lives, it showed only a couple of inches.

Hope you have a great Monday!

I got quite a bit done yesterday. So far today all I've done is get the large tote box, which contains wrapping paper and bubble wrap, out to the bench by the elevators. I had quite a time getting it out my door. Thankfully, a kind neighbour came along and held the door open for me. Getting it down the hall was easy, but getting it up onto the bench took some effort - now my back is really sore. I have taken a pain pill and will wait until that kicks in before I try to do more. Everything I have put out there before today is gone, so besides the tree, I've given away a bag of tea lights, a radio, and a sleeping bag. I hope someone wants the box and its contents too!

Mema - good for you for doing your cards!
I'm glad you and your DH were able to enjoy time together on your deck.
That's funny about not cleaning because you aren't hosting the Bible study tomorrow!
I have no idea why I had such awful anxiety on Wednesday. I go to the bank about once a month, and that has never happened before.
I'm glad you like Christmas music, and I also love the song you mentioned.
The one thing a postal worker has done lately, is claim to have 'attempted' to deliver a parcel, which they did NOT do since I was in all that day. Unfortunately, it was the day my housekeeper had been here, so I had no way to go and pick it up. I refuse to pay for a cab to go and get it. I will ask my housekeeper to get it for me when she's here on Tuesday. I will not be out with my friend until Wednesday.
I can imagine how exciting that was to be surprised by the gifts from Santa when you were a child!

Kate - I'm glad I wasn't the only one to post in the November thread yesterday!
Are you getting rain today? We had rain all night, and this morning - all the snow is gone, but not to worry, we'll get more tomorrow.
How nice that every day your dishwasher is filled with clean dishes!
Facebook has been fine again for me; that was very frustrating, and I'm sure your friend was unhappy about her posts disappearing too.
I'm glad you've found ways to use up that pile of dirt!

I hope you're both having lovely Sundays.

Mema – nice excuse your DH gave you for putting off the house work. It does seem like housework is never done. I was teasing my DH last night about the dishes. He always unloads the DW and I was telling him it was like “magic”. He unloads it and the next day it’s all full of clean dishes again.

I can imagine that was really exciting for a child to come home to a whole bunch of gifts appearing under the tree.

Leslie – I’ve heard that Facebook has been having issues. One of my friends has been having her posts disappear after she’s posted them. I’ve not had any problems.

I hope that all went well at the bank in spite of the anxiety attacks.

We have stuff in our attic that’s been there for a long time. Twice in the past we went through and got rid of stuff but it’s time to do it again. Hope you get your tote loaded and your friend can help you get it moved to the Salvation Army.

The driveway is finally free of the last of that great pile of dirt. We had an old plastic pool that DS got for his dogs to play in during the warm summer they stayed with us. We poked a few holes in the bottom and used it like a “raised bed” to store a bunch of the excess dirt. Then we put a few more wheel barrow loads on some low areas along the driveway. The rest of it I shoveled into my compost bin along w/ a layer of shredded leaves. So I got rid of some leaves and the rest of the dirt. Whew! Just in time before the pouring rain wets the leaves again. At least we'll get the driveway washed. LOL

Of course I’m not sure what I’m going to do w/ the dirt in the pool next year. Maybe someone will want it or I'll think of something to do w/ it.

Leslie - I did the same thing you did. I was reading through the November posts and ended up adding my post there even though I meant to put it here.

Re Post from yesterday:

Pat – thank you for getting the new threads up! It’s nice to have them pinned right away.

Leslie – good morning to you. Hope you have a lovely restful day.

Mema – I don’t actually remember ever believing in Santa. I remember the Christmas I was 7, my brother told my younger sister there was no Santa.

Low 80’s is a bit warm for me but low humidity and a light breeze do sound nice. The storm we're expecting tonight is moving in a bit later than expected so it may be raining still on Sunday afternoon. Not sure what we'll do about decorating.

I didn't get my house cleaned today. But I did finish my Christmas cards. Now I just need to make copies of my Christmas letter and get my pictures from Walmart in the mail, and then the cards can be sent. DH and I spent a good portion of the day on our back deck. It was a beautiful day today, so we enjoyed it and each other.

DH did say to me when I was telling him I should go in and clean - "Well, you don't have Bible study here on Monday, so...." I told him, the house still needs to be cleaned, but I think that did it for me as far as putting it off! LOL

Leslie - good to have you back. I'm sorry you had so much anxiety about going to the bank.
I have the I heart Radio app on my phone and so a lot of times when I'm cleaning I'll turn on music to listen to. And last week, I listened to Christmas music the whole time. I love almost every song. But one song, that actually brings tears to my eyes is , "Mary, did you know?" I think it's the combination of the words and the melody, that it doesn't make me sad, it's more of an overwhelming sense of awe. I'm not big on Alvin, either, but I do like the Chestnuts song!
I'm not on FB at all, but I hope you were able to figure out how to post.
Did you find anything fun or exciting in your tote boxes? I hope your friend can take you to Salvation Army to drop off your donation.
Probably a smart idea of your friend to send your gifts by courier. But it's sad to think the postal employees would willingly do something to someone's mail because they are angry. Here, I think if you tamper with someone's mail, it's a Federal offense.
I was saddened, also, about hearing of former Pres. Bush's passing. He lived a long, good life, I think.

Kate - I don't remember when I stopped believing in Santa. When I was a child, every Christmas Eve we went to my grandma's house after the church program my sister and I were in and we lived in a duplex, so my parent's would arrange the renters to come in and put all the rest of the gifts under the tree, so when we got home from grandma's, "Santa" had come! It was always so exciting, I remember.
I think you would have enjoyed this day here. There was low humidity and sitting out on the deck in the shade was perfect!
I hope you can get your decorations up in between raindrops! emoticon

Have a great Sunday!

Now that it's December 1st, the Christmas music has started on the radio... I think they only play one song/hour, so that's not too bad. One of my favourites is Mary's Boy Child by Boney M., and my least favourite is the one that starts 'Chestnuts roasting on an open fire'; I also cannot abide Alvin and the chipmunks.
My apologies for not posting for a few days. Wednesday was the day I went to the bank, and had horrible anxiety attacks before I went. Thursday and yesterday I was trying to catch up with all the emails. And yesterday was frustrating because I was unable to post anything on Facebook - I could react to a post, but couldn't say anything.
Today I'm going to work on my large closet, and 2 tote boxes, one of which is very big, and I don't think I've opened it since I moved in here almost 14 years ago. I'm sure it will take me all weekend to sort through it all. My friend will be picking me up from my doctor's appointment on Wednesday, so I hope to have that tote box filled with the things I am donating to the Salvation Army, and I hope we can drop it off that day.

Mema - I'm sorry you've just been through your mother's birthday. Those days can be very hard, especially during the first year!
Those Santa letters for your grandkids sound great!
The postal strike has been a rotating one, so different cities were hit each day for about 6 weeks. On the days they were on strike here, there was no mail, and the mail was all badly delayed. I don't know what they will be doing to express their anger at being ordered back to work. My friend is sending my Christmas gifts to VT (I ordered some gorgeous puzzles her son has made), and we have decided to send them by courier rather than the post office. They have said international parcels might not be delivered until March!
Good for you for getting your tree up and decorated already! I have put my little tree out in its box, and someone picked it up, so I'm glad it will be enjoyed by someone this year! I have my angel out on my desk.
I'm glad you were able to talk to your son! And I'm glad you had a few hours to yourself yesterday.

Kate - I'm glad your DGS's appointment went well. It sounds as if there were very smooth transitions from one thing to the next. I'm very glad the heart murmur is benign. I also have one which seems to come and go.
We are also expecting warm temps (upper 40s) and a lot of rain tomorrow - that should wash away the snow we have. I think you should just leave the leaves - they provide shelter for small creatures...
I realized there was no Santa when I was 6 because I recognized my mum's writing on the gift tags!

I was very sorry to hear this morning of the death of former president H.W. Bush. He did live a good long life.

I hope you're both having good days. Now I need to get to work! (Maybe I'll have lunch first...)
