Now that it's December 1st, the Christmas music has started on the radio... I think they only play one song/hour, so that's not too bad. One of my favourites is Mary's Boy Child by Boney M., and my least favourite is the one that starts 'Chestnuts roasting on an open fire'; I also cannot abide Alvin and the chipmunks.
My apologies for not posting for a few days. Wednesday was the day I went to the bank, and had horrible anxiety attacks before I went. Thursday and yesterday I was trying to catch up with all the emails. And yesterday was frustrating because I was unable to post anything on Facebook - I could react to a post, but couldn't say anything.
Today I'm going to work on my large closet, and 2 tote boxes, one of which is very big, and I don't think I've opened it since I moved in here almost 14 years ago. I'm sure it will take me all weekend to sort through it all. My friend will be picking me up from my doctor's appointment on Wednesday, so I hope to have that tote box filled with the things I am donating to the Salvation Army, and I hope we can drop it off that day.

Mema - I'm sorry you've just been through your mother's birthday. Those days can be very hard, especially during the first year!
Those Santa letters for your grandkids sound great!
The postal strike has been a rotating one, so different cities were hit each day for about 6 weeks. On the days they were on strike here, there was no mail, and the mail was all badly delayed. I don't know what they will be doing to express their anger at being ordered back to work. My friend is sending my Christmas gifts to VT (I ordered some gorgeous puzzles her son has made), and we have decided to send them by courier rather than the post office. They have said international parcels might not be delivered until March!
Good for you for getting your tree up and decorated already! I have put my little tree out in its box, and someone picked it up, so I'm glad it will be enjoyed by someone this year! I have my angel out on my desk.
I'm glad you were able to talk to your son! And I'm glad you had a few hours to yourself yesterday.

Kate - I'm glad your DGS's appointment went well. It sounds as if there were very smooth transitions from one thing to the next. I'm very glad the heart murmur is benign. I also have one which seems to come and go.
We are also expecting warm temps (upper 40s) and a lot of rain tomorrow - that should wash away the snow we have. I think you should just leave the leaves - they provide shelter for small creatures...
I realized there was no Santa when I was 6 because I recognized my mum's writing on the gift tags!

I was very sorry to hear this morning of the death of former president H.W. Bush. He did live a good long life.

I hope you're both having good days. Now I need to get to work! (Maybe I'll have lunch first...)

Pat Ė thank you for getting the new threads up! Itís nice to have them pinned right away.

Leslie Ė good morning to you. Hope you have a lovely restful day.

Mema Ė I donít actually remember ever believing in Santa. I remember the Christmas I was 7, my brother told my younger sister there was no Santa.

Low 80ís is a bit warm for me but low humidity and a light breeze do sound nice. The storm we're expecting tonight is moving in a bit later than expected so it may be raining still on Sunday afternoon. Not sure what we'll do about decorating.

Kate - Yes, the Santa letters are fun. It's so fun to see their expressions especially when there's something in there about them personally. For Dakota I mentioned her taking violin lessons and to play a song on Christmas Eve so Santa knows her house and for Ryan I put in about their FL trip and feeding the Giraffe and picking up sea shells.
When my DH's children were getting old enough to kind of wonder about Santa, he would tell them if you don't believe, then he won't leave you any presents! Not in a mean way, but trying to keep the mystery going. So there was always a few presents "from Santa".
I'm glad to hear that if your DD's murmur gets worse, there can be surgery to correct it.
Glad you were able to get some raking done and turn the leaves so they can start to dry out.
I hope you are able to put up your outdoor decorations on Sunday.

DH went to visit his dad and then had a couple of errands to run afterwards, so I had close to 4 hours to myself. I worked on my Christmas cards, tried to take a nap, but didn't sleep and watched a show I had recorded!

Tomorrow I will clean my house. Supposed to be a perfect day tomorrow - temps in the low 80's with low humidity and a light breeze.

Leslie - I hope you are feeling alright!

Have a great Saturday!

Leslie - hope you're getting some good reading time.

Mema Ė the Santa letters sound like fun. I didnít know they did letters like that.

We never did Santa b/c my DD was terrified the first time she saw a Santa when she was little. We needed to tell her that the Santas she saw in the stores were just people in costumes. Even so, she kept as far away as she could. We did put gifts under the tree labeled "from Santa" but the kids always knew that meant from your mom and dad.

Now she has a son herself but her partner is Muslim, so they never did Santa w/ my DGS either. He got in trouble a couple years ago for telling all the kids in his kindergarten that there was no Santa.

As far as DDís murmur, they say just to keep checking back from time to time to make sure itís not getting worse. If it does, they can do surgery to replace the valve. As long as sheís not having symptoms, sheís probably OK.

I went to yoga yesterday and Iím signed up for spin class this morning.

And I did some raking yesterday Ė pulling the piles of leaves away from the fence, spreading them out and turning them over so they will dry a bit. Itís so messy to clean up wet leaves. I will need to deal w/them before the next rain storm on Saturday.

Sunday afternoon, after the rain storm, itís supposed to be fairly warm (low 50ís) so I told DH we should do the outside decorations that day.

I got my tree up and all decorated, so I'm all finished inside. I had some extra lights, so DH got me a timer and I put some outside on bushes we have right by our patio in the back yard. He'll put up the rest of the outside lights in front.......sometime! Hmmm emoticon

Tomorrow DH will go and visit his dad, so I'll have a couple of hours to myself. That will be nice. And I won't have to use it doing my tree!

I talked with my son tonight. That was nice. I hadn't talked with him in a couple of weeks - since before they went to FL for the wedding. I did ask him why their friends got married down there since they live in Iowa and he said they wanted to get married on a beach - and they were taking a cruise for their honeymoon, so that probably worked out well for them. And this was really the first "family" vacation they have taken that was far away. He said they took a couple of extra days so they could do some things - they went to the Tampa Zoo and and Aquarium place.

Kate - thanks for explaining about the heart murmur's. Makes more sense now to me. With your DD's heart murmur, is that something that does get worse with age or is it just something that CAN happen at anytime?
Trying to rake up wet leaves is hard. We run into that problem at times when we come back to WI and get spring rains.
I love matching PJ's!! I think that's fun! I haven't bought any for my DS and his wife and kids, but I do usually buy the kids PJ's every year.
I'm getting ready to send Dakota and Ryan their "Santa Claus" letter. The website sends the letters from North Pole, AK and they make sure there are 2 different versions if going to the same household and I can add a personalized paragraph that sounds like Santa knows something about them! It's fun. Then we video call when they get their letters so I can see their faces as mom and dad read the letters to them.

Leslie - hope you are getting caught up with your New Yorker's!

Have a wonderful Friday!

Mema Ė a benign heart murmer is like your DHís. Something in the flow is a bit odd, but it doesnít have any effect on the function. My DDís murmur is caused by an actual flaw in the heart Ė one of the valves isnít working quite properly (mitral valve prolapse). Itís not causing problems right now but if it gets worse, the blood can start leaking backwards.

Except for a few cold snaps, weíve been in the low 40ís and had a lot of rain. There was a big snow storm that hit northern NE but we just got rain. Not great gardening weather but not too bad for doing a few things outdoors.

Iím hoping we have a few dry days so I can get some leaves raked up. We had massive winds that brought down all the leaves all at once and then followed up w/ a snow storm. All the leaves are drifted up by the fence and soaking wet. And it keeps raining. If they dry a bit I can tackle them more easily.

I haven't done much shopping yet, just a few things. Yesterday when I was out, I saw matching adult and kids Christmas PJ's. I bought some for DD and DGS. I figured he would get a kick out of matching his mom for Christmas morning even though they're not great quality and won't be worn very often.

I did meet with my sponsor this morning, then had a couple of errands to run. When I got home, it was about 1 pm. I was thinking about getting my tree out, but we had church at 4 pm, so I knew that wouldn't be enough time. I don't have anything planned for tomorrow, so I'll probably do it then, or DH is going over to see his dad on Friday, so maybe if I get it up tomorrow and put all the lights on, then I can finish it on Friday.

So, instead of my tree, I started working on my Christmas cards. I ordered the picture of the grand kids from Walmart to put in the cards. The pictures should be here next week.

I ended up doing quite a bit of online shopping on Cyber Monday. I ordered from Bath and Body Works, Blair, Bon Worth and a new place I found The Positive Christian. All the places were having really good sales and/or free shipping. Most of the items are for me except some of the things I ordered from The Positive Christian. I ordered necklace and bracelet sets for my sister and the gal who is leading our Bible study.

Kate - Your sermon topics for Advent sound interesting.
When my DS was little, I would take him out and we would pick out a live tree. It was fun and I love the smell of a live tree. They do sell live trees down here - I don't know how people can keep then alive for so long down here in the heat! But they must manage. When my DS got older, I bought a fake tree right after Christmas, so I got a good deal. I think I bought it 18-20 years ago at least. But there were about 4-5 years that I didn't use it because we had a 5th Wheel RV. But once we built our house, then I brought it down here. It's still looks great!
Seems so weird to hear you talk about going out to garden! I know it was snowing up in MN by my DS's house today and supposed to continue over night! And the ground has been frozen for awhile. As a matter of fact, my DS went ice fishing and said there was about 7.5" on a lake in northern MN! And 4" on his local lake!
So glad to hear that your DGS's appointment went well and you didn't have a lot of traffic. I didn't know a heart murmur could be benign. Can it then also be malignant? What would that mean? But I'm so glad that it seems like his heart is in good condition! Praise God! My DH has a heart murmur, but he's had it since he was a child and there have been times when the dr.'s can't even tell.

Leslie - hope you are having a good day!

Enjoy your Thursday!

Mema Ė Iíve signed up for a daily advent meditation from our local seminary that should start showing up in my email next week.

Our Bible study follows the sermon topics so weíve switched over, too. Weíre doing 4 of the titles for Jesus: Lamb, Messiah, Savior, King.

(Hugs) Those birthdays of loved ones are difficult.

Leslie Ė I didnít realize the postal workers were out. We take it so much for granted that our mail will arrive in a timely manner.

I still like to put up my Christmas tree but we switched to an artificial one about 6 -7 years ago. We used to go out and cut one down when the kids were little. A fake one is just so much quicker and easier to set up.

I dressed for the gym and put my regular clothes over them and headed out. When I got outside I realized the rain had stopped and it wasnít as cold as I thought it would be so I decided I would do some last bits of gardening work instead. I had a ďno digĒ border that I wanted to put down surrounding my butterfly garden so I could lay mulch or something there to keep the grass away from the raised bed frame. It has been laying there since before I went to CA so I finally put it in itís final place and put in the stakes to hold it down. The nice thing is that the ground was so soft and wet that I hardly needed the mallet. Just pushed the stakes down w/ my hand almost ĺ of the way.

DGSís appointment went well. We were able to get through the traffic in time to find a place to park (on the roof) in the parking garage. And we didnít really have much waiting time except for the switches between the tech who did the EKG, the tech who did the Echo, the resident who reviewed the history, and finally the doctor. We were out of there in 90 minutes. DGS said it felt weird to be seeing his heart on the monitor but they turned on a TV so he mostly watched a cartoon while they were running the probe over his chest in different positions. All good news. The heart murmur is benign and they donít see any abnormalities like DDís prolapsed valve.

We started a new 4 week Bible study at church for Advent. "What Child is This?" Today was good, so I'm looking forward to next week. It's based on the 4 candles of Advent that represent Hope, Peace, Joy and Love.

We had a good group at my meeting today and I saw an old friend which was nice.

Today was my mom's birthday - she would have been 88. It was a bittersweet day for me.

Tomorrow I will meet with my sponsor and then pick up a few things at Walmart and hopefully come home and start on my Christmas tree.

Leslie - That makes sense about your tree, now. But I'm glad you have a ceramic angel you can put out.
I'm glad you have a good book to read and hope you get caught up with your New Yorkers.
Have your postal workers been on strike all this time? So have you not been getting your mail all this time? Or have you had to go and get it yourself?

Kate - Isn't that something about the nativity sets? I even had to look on the bottom of my mom's pieces to make sure they had my aunt's "signature" on them. How cool is that!
Glad the doctor wants to get that base line for your DGS - that's a good thing.
What did you end up doing - yoga or strength? Did you get any headache?

Happy Wednesday!

Mema - I'm sorry you had such a small group for Bible study, but sometimes that's good for more personal sharing. I can imagine how hard it is for the woman whose husband has Alzheimer's. I used to take care of patients with dementia, and know it would be very difficult to manage at home.
That nativity set is very pretty!
I haven't put up my tree for several years now, and don't plan on using it this year, so I think it's time to pass it on to someone who can use it. I have a ceramic angel, so I'll put that out and it will be my decoration this year.

Kate - I'm glad you can take your DGS for the echocardiogram. When I had mine, I was able to watch it on the monitor - it was quite fascinating.
That sounds wise, to be able to stop exercising if your head starts to hurt.

I am having a 'catch-up' day - I will finally get that paperwork done for Housing, and will get a ride to the bank tomorrow for them to complete their portion.
I have a good book to read, and I'm behind again with the New Yorkers.
Our postal workers have been legislated back to work today. There is apparently a huge backlog of mail that may not all be delivered until after New Year's. I'm just glad it's over, but the workers are very angry. I hope they won't be taking it out on the mail...

I hope your days are going well!

Mema Ė I donít have an update yet on Brian. The court date is sometime this week so I expect Iíll be hearing soon.

Alzheimerís is such an awful disease. And itís hard to get a handle on it b/c it keeps progressing.

Thatís a really pretty Nativity Set. My MIL has one just like it. And hers is painted blue, too. She used to do ceramics and made quite a few projects. I have a church w/ a light in it that she gave me one Christmas.

Leslie Ė sorry you had to miss your exercise class w/ an iffy stomach.

That sounds like you had a bad fall off the motorcycle. I was telling my DH that I wished I had my hood up so my head would have had some padding. I donít think I had a concussion. At least I didnít have any of the symptoms of concussion. My DH and I were both very aware of watching for them.

Today Iíll be picking up DGS from school early and taking him to get an echocardiogram. He has a heart murmur just like DD. Itís one of the effects of DDís EDS. Although he doesnít have an official diagnosis of EDS, they want a base line reading.

Iím trying to decide if I want to go to yoga today or just do strength training. Iím thinking the latter b/c I can stop if my head starts hurting. I havenít had any headaches from the knock on the noggin but Iím not sure I want to push it w/ so much up and down movement w/ forward folds and down dogs.

We had a very small group today at Bible study - only 4 of us. A couple were out of town for the Thanksgiving weekend and not back yet, 2 have not made it down here yet and 2 not sure if they are going to stay in it. But it was good for the 4 of us who were there. One woman's husband has Alzheimer's and he's starting to get noticeably worse. So, she was having a bit of a hard time, but kept telling us, "I'm doing fine, really". I don't think it's all caught up with her yet.

I did get all my Christmas cases down from the attic and put everything up this afternoon and evening except my tree. I'll get that done this week. I didn't have any more "surprises" other than the 2 wreaths. But I had kept a Nativity set of my mom's that her sister-in-law made in ceramics years ago. She always loved this set. It was a soft blue and cream colored because for many years my mom had all blue decorations for Christmas. When I was taking it down I was wondering where I would put it because I pretty well have used up all my space in my living room, dining room and kitchen. Then I thought, I could put it in my bedroom! So I did! Here's a picture of the set:

It's also her birthday tomorrow. She would have been 88 years old.

I have Bible study at church in the morning, run a couple of errands and then my meeting in the afternoon.

Leslie - Your fall you had on the motorcycle sounds like it could have been a lot worse if you hadn't had your helmet on! Good thing you did.
How come you are giving away your little Christmas tree? I actually have 2 small trees in my bedroom. I had bought one myself and then I had bought one for my mom, so I put that in my bedroom, too!
My Bible study will take a break at Christmas time. Mainly because Christmas Eve is on a Monday and New Year's Eve is the next Monday (that's the day our study is on). If Christmas falls later in the week, we don't always take a break. We kind of leave it up to the group.
I'm sorry you missed your exercise class, but glad your stomach is better.

Kate - Wow - that does sound like you took a bad fall! I'm glad, too that your DH has been taking good care of you. I hope you feel better soon!
I used to love to watch all those Hallmark holiday movies and specials! They are sappy and soapy, but they always end with a happy ending! Sometimes it's just nice to watch a good, happy movie. I do miss that since we don't have cable, but even Netflix has some of those movies on their list.
I wanted to ask you, have you any more news on Brian? I put him on our prayer list and they wanted to know if there was any update.

Have a Happy Tuesday!

Kate - that sounds like a bad fall! You probably had a concussion, but I'm glad you've been taking it easy, and your husband has been taking good care of you! I hope you didn't injure your back. I once 'flew' off the back of a motorcycle. I was in the process of climbing on, with my left foot on the pedal and raising my right leg to go over the seat, when my husband lost his balance and the bike tipped to the left. I landed on my back in the driveway, and thank goodness I had my helmet on because my head really bounced! I hope you feel better very soon!
I've had cilantro once, and don't think I liked it, but I don't remember if it tasted like soap. I do love curry!
I am going to give away my little Christmas tree this week. When the people doing the floors get done near the elevator, I will put the box with the tree out there on the bench. I was going to do it today, but when I took out my garbage, they had to let me by, so I don't want to bother them again. I will be going down around noon to get my mail, and take used batteries down for recycling.
When I was in nursing school in Montreal, and my family was in Hamilton, I did all my travelling back and forth by train. And when I first moved to the US, I took the train from Hamilton to San Francisco - what a great trip!

Mema - I'm glad too that it was not a bullet hole at your church.
I hope your Bible study won't have to continue at your house. Do you take a break over the Christmas holidays?
I'm sorry you haven't been to New England. I love it! We lived in the Berkshires, in western MA, one winter, from October, 1969 to May, 1970. It was one of my favourite times.
I'm not sure yet if the new floor will get slippery - since this building is mainly for seniors, and the disabled, I certainly hope it will not be slippery! That would be very foolish!

I missed my exercise class this morning because my stomach was too 'iffy'. It is feeling better now.

I hope you both have great days!

Mema Ė Iím one of the folks that have the genetic shift that makes cilantro taste like soap so I know what you mean. I love the taste of curry and use it in a lot of dishes.

Glad to know it was a rock not a bullet. It could have just been mischievous boys who were too young to be thinking through their actions clearly.

I should be doing my house decorations this week, too. I need my DH to bring things down from the attic.

Leslie Ė I like train travel, too. When I started college in MA, my parents out in Montana got in contact w/ another girl who was going to the same school. We met at the train station and came cross country together. It was more than 24 hours on the train. Scary to be going so far from home but it was exciting b/c we had each other.

I watched some Hallmark Holiday Specials this weekend. Sappy, soapy and cute.

I had a bad fall on Friday afternoon. Our church has a new library of books donated by an older gentleman who died last summer. We brought over a bookcase that we werenít using anymore. I was walking backwards carrying one end of the bookcase and I thought my husband, holding the other end, was keeping track of where I was stepping. Nope! I went backwards over a curb and landed on my back and then my head snapped to the pavement. I've been doing a whole lot of nothing since then. I went straight up to rest in bed and I left my husband to deal with DD and DGS and taking care of my son's 3 dogs. He brought me ice packs every half hour for the rest of the day. I'm OK now except for a painful goose egg on the back of my head and very sore muscles in my neck, shoulders, back and chest but he's still being very solicitous of me.

Well, we found out at church this morning, that what we thought was a bullet hole is more likely a rock that someone threw. Not just a stone, but big enough and hard enough to cause the door to shatter like that. So, in a way, that's good news.

I got my house all cleaned today so I will probably start getting all my Christmas decorations out of the attic and will put them up this week. I know I bought new wreaths for outside on the garage, but not sure if I bought anything else last year! So, it will be a pleasant surprise if I did! LOL

Tomorrow should be the last week of having Bible study at my house. I know my DH will appreciate that. Although, he never complained when he had to leave the house.

Leslie - I hope you can get something worked out so you can go and visit your son and his family. There was always something about Vermont that made me want to visit that state sometime. It seemed like it was just quaint. I have never been out East before - not the North East (New England states). I did go to Pennsylvania once, Pittsburgh. But it was for a wedding and just a short time, so not a lot of sight-seeing.
I'm sure the new flooring will take some getting used to. Is it going to be slippery at all if it gets wet from snow?
I was tired today, myself. I took a 1/2 hour nap after church and then another 1/2 hour nap before I had to make dinner. My DH said he was tired today, too. So, not sure what was going on! Maybe something in the air all across the country! emoticon

Kate - I suppose you're right about the holiday weekend and people being gone as far as being able to come to decorate.
From what I saw on the Mary Poppins special, I think it would be perfect for your DGS! It just looks like a good old fashioned fun, musical, family movie. There aren't many of those around any more, I'm afraid. But, then again, I don't always pay attention to kids' movies because I don't get much of a chance to take the kids to a movie.
Curry was one spice I just couldn't get to taste to my liking. I think it's very specific and you either like it or not. Cilantro is a bit like that.

Hope you both have a good Monday!

Mema - that's a very sweet photo of your grandkids!! It will be great in your Christmas letter.
I'm sorry there weren't more of you to do the decorating; it's very good of you to take that on.
That's very scary about the bullet hole. I hope the church will have better security in the future.
How wonderful of your DH to make fajitas! I love those. I've never tried shredded cabbage on them, but it sounds good.

My son lives in Middlebury, Vermont. I would have to take the airbus to the airport here, then fly to Montreal. It would be possible for my son to meet me there, or I could probably get a short flight to Burlington, VT. That would be closer to them. I will discuss this with him, and we obviously have plenty of time to make plans!
I'm still not used to the new floor. We've had the blue-grey carpet since I've lived here, so this will be an adjustment.
I watched a good movie on Netflix last night. I think it was called Leisure Seeker, and it was with Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland.

Kate - the turkey curry sounds wonderful!
I will check with Via Rail and see if they can accommodate disabled passengers - I really do prefer trains! I'm not sure if there's a train from Montreal to Burlington, but I'll find out. I imagine you're right that the cost might be about the same.
I am indeed glad that there's no more dust from the hallway.

I am very tired today. I've already had one nap, and may have another this afternoon.

I hope you both have lovely Sundays!

Mema Ė scary about the bullet hole in your glass door at church. We donít even have a security system at our church.

Cute photo of the grandkids. I haven't done a Christmas letter in about 5 years.

Iíve never thought of shredded cabbage for fajitas but it sounds really good. I have made a Thai flavored wrap that used cabbage and itís nice. I made turkey curry last night w/ the last of the big pieces of meat. Now there is just the bones and scraps.

I expect the fact that it was a holiday weekend meant fewer people available to decorate the church. People may have been traveling or had family visiting. I know that our old pastor and his wife used to do the decorating w/ another couple. It was their after Thanksgiving tradition. I donít know who does it now.

I saw the ads for the new Mary Poppins movie. I was wondering if it would be good for my DGS.

Leslie Ė turkey noodle soup from the carcass has always been a tradition here, too. In fact when my DS had his tonsils out while he was in Reno, he asked if I could make some for him. Not having any bones, we made do w/ store bought broth but it was a great meal for slipping down a very sore throat.

The train I take into Boston is equipped for wheel chairs. You might call the company and see if the train you would take to your DSís could accommodate you. Although the cost might not be much less than airfare.

Nice that your hall floor is all done and you won't have to worry about dust anymore.

Boy, a busy day. I was up and out of the house by 7 am! I got to church at 7:30 with the goodies and then started bringing all the Christmas decorations boxes out of the storage area. I got things pretty well organized before people were supposed to come. We only had 5 of us!! I was a bit disappointed. I don't know if it was because it was a weekend or what. In the past, it's always done on a week day. So, I'm very glad I got done as much as I did before the few people arrived.

But, we had an incident that happened sometime in the last few days. Our main front door (which most people don't use because we have a side door that lets out into the parking lot) has 2 glass doors and one of them was intact, but completely shattered with a small bullet hole towards the top! We called the police and filed the report, and I spoke with the Pastor who had been out of town visiting his daughter and mother for Thanksgiving up near Dallas and he wanted to know if the alarm had been set off. And I'm pretty sure it wasn't, because when I opened up this morning, I had to disarm the alarm, so it was still engaged. Not a very effective security system. DH said it must be the type if the door is opened that sounds the alarm, which means if that glass had shattered and fallen out, someone may have been able to walk right in! Not very good. I'm sure we'll be looking at a new or different set up for our security. But, how scary.

Got home and then did laundry. DH made fajita's for supper! And he even went out and bought cilantro for me and cabbage and finely shredded some of the cabbage for our fajita's. There's a kind of fast food restaurant down here that has shredded cabbage as one of the toppings for taco's, fajita's, etc. and it's very good in place of lettuce. That was a nice treat again. Hmmm......DH's been awfully nice lately! LOL

And I typed out a rough draft of my Christmas letter for this year. Last year I never got a chance to write one so this one is a bit longer than usual, but covers everything. I used to hate getting the "annual Christmas letter", but now I really do enjoy reading them. I don't send out a lot of cards, but around 30-40. I usually include a picture of Dakota and Ryan so everyone can see how big they are getting. I think I will use this one, this year:

Kate - The thing about age and the shingles shot - I forgot to write that the younger you are, the more likely you are to experience more symptoms! Usually that's not the case it seems, but I read it in the paperwork they give you with all the information about the drug/shot/etc. I wanted to see exactly what the side effects were. I think I had all of them! Ha!
Mindful Flow Yoga sounds really nice. Did you like it?
I bet you were tired from all the cooking and cleaning. Even if it's just for a couple of extra people, you still do all the same things!
I made a kind of "mock" turkey pot pie using some of the leftovers for dinner last night. I put biscuits on top instead of pie crust.

Leslie - Where again does your son live? I know you've probably said, but I can't remember. And I can see why your DIL was making 3 pies with all of their company. Three years is a long time to not see your grandsons! How old are they? Are you able to skype with them at all? That helps when you can't be there physically.
I'm glad you have your new floor in. Do you like it?
And I'm glad you are going to be seeing your doctor soon and that it's OK to skip your pills. It does sound like you may have things figured out now.

I watched a special on TV last night on the making of the Mary Poppins movie and it looks like it will actually be good. I'm going to see if one of my friends wants to go when it comes out in December. I really like Emily Blount as an actress and she seems like she made a good Mary Poppins. Tough to follow Julie Andrews!

Well, I think I will relax a bit and get to bed early. Wouldn't you know, since I knew I had to get up very early, I hardly slept last night!

Have a good rest of the weekend!

Mema - I'm glad you've been feeling better! I'm happy you had a good Thanksgiving.
That picture for your FIL sounds wonderful. And, hanging a lot of family pictures for him sounds like a great idea.
My son and his family were having 4 guests, plus the 4 of them, so a good sized get-together. I always feel left out for the holiday, so I'm hoping maybe I can get there next year. I think the only way I could go is by air - I can no longer step up into a bus or train. Going by air would be complicated, but possible, I think. I haven't seen my grandsons or my DIL for over 3 years.

We do have the new floor in - it's not as white as my housekeeper had suggested - I would call it light grey.
Yes, it's OK to skip the pills. My doctor told me to take 1/2 pill for a bit, and then just take it every other day, so that's why I've skipped it entirely a few times, but then I've needed to take it later, so I think 1/2 pill is the right amount for now. I will be seeing my doctor again December 5th, so I will take along my list of how much I've taken each day. At least I've had none of those episodes of extreme fatigue.

Kate - your Thanksgiving sounds great too!
I also like the sound of the yoga class you attended.
I'm glad your DD was able to relax and catch up on sleep!
I used to make turkey noodle soup with the carcass when there was only a bit of meat left.

I hope you're both having good days!

Mema Ė glad youíre feeling better now. Donít say that itís your age Ė youíre the youngest one of us I think.

So many place decorate right after Thanksgiving I donít think that anyone will notice that itís a week before Advent. It's actually nice this year Thanksgiving was early so there is a bit of a break before Advent starts.

The photo collage sounds wonderful. I have a big group photo like that of my momís extended family. It wasnít often that the whole group was together for a picture.

Leslie Ė I was wondering the same thing as Mema said Ė Is it OK to skip pills that way? It sounds like the half pill is a good balance of keeping the anxiety under control and not making you too tired out.

Friday I was hoping to get to the Y for spinning class but there was a waiting list when I tried to reserve a bike. Instead I went to a Mindful Flow Yoga class instead. It was nice. I ended up not taking DGS to the pool later in the afternoon b/c I was tired.

DD finally got out of bed after 12 noon and did some paperwork that she had brought with her. They left for home around 3:30. Dinner was reheated leftovers. My turkey is now down to bones except for one chunk of white meat and one thigh. Iíll try to get it stripped this afternoon and make some broth from the bones.

Today was an even better day. By last night, I was bushed. But we had a very nice Thanksgiving. Today, DH and I went over to his dad's place to see about putting up a bunch of family pictures. DH ordered a 16x20 print of the entire family - the dad, 2 sons & wives, 2 daughters & husbands, children, grand children and great-grandchildren. The picture that was taken for my MIL's memorial service. So everyone was dressed pretty nicely! emoticon So that picture will be the center of this "collage" with the rest of the family spread out from there. It will look nice once it is all done.

I did have to run to Walmart today for just a couple of things and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't a mad house! But the clerk at check-out said last night was pretty crazy. They started their Black Friday deals at 6 pm on Thursday.

Tomorrow I have to be up at church bright and early with pastries and fruit as we are decorating the church for Christmas. Technically, it will be decorated before Advent "officially" starts, but too much scheduling conflict that I couldn't get it done between this Sunday and the 1st Advent service this next Wednesday. I'm sure most people won't even give it a thought! LOL

Kate - Sounds like you had a nice Thanksgiving as well. And you did much better than me as far as eating. Although I didn't eat a lot - small portions of most everything. But I did have a small piece of pecan pie, but couldn't even finish it! I was shocked! LOL
Did you and your DGS get to the pool?
I never ate cranberries growing up - my mom always bought the canned as well. But one year at Christmas I made my own cranberry sauce - it was a pretty simple recipe and was delicious! I had enough left over that a day or two later we had guests and I put it over a block of cream cheese as an appetizer. It was great!
Oh, and on the vaccine - I'm not sure if it was the potency of the vaccine as much as my age, but the pharmacist said this vaccine is 90% more effective at preventing shingles and stays at 85% effective over the next 4 years. The old shot he said was 67% effective and a lot of people still got shingles in spite of getting the shot. This one is not supposed to do that. (fingers crossed)

Leslie - I'm glad you had a nice long chat with your DS.
That was a lot of pies your DIL was baking. Were they having a lot of guests?
Did they get your flooring in on your floor? What do you think of it?
I hope taking a half pill continues to work for you. But is it OK to skip the pills completely for a couple of days?

Enjoy your Saturday!

Mema Ė glad you felt better during the day and I hope the achiness has faded today.

Leslie Ė we had record breaking cold for the day, too. I like the jellied sauce so I always get a can of it. Iíve tried making the whole berry kind and itís good, but I donít usually want to take on another thing when Iím doing all the other special foods for the holiday.

I cooked the turkey and all the fixing for the family. DH helped out w/ the other stuff like setting the table and putting out all the trimmings. The bird was ready at 12 so we ate at 12:30. Very yummy and not dry. I had a small spoon of stuffing and one small roll but otherwise it was turkey and salad and veggies. One plate full and I was completely satisfied.

By 2PM all the leftovers were put away and the dishes in the dishwasher. My two kids were napping, DH was watching football, DGS was on the computer playing games. DS had some pie and left in the late afternoon to spend time w/ his GFís family.

DGS, DH and I had some left overs and pie for dinner. DD slept through the day and asked to spend the night. She got up sometime after we were in bed to make herself some left overs and do some work she had brought with her. Not sure what her plans are for today. Perhaps more sleep? Sheís such a night owl. I think Iíll take DGS swimming.

Happy Thanksgiving to you both! We had blowing snow and a lot of strong winds yesterday morning, and then it was sunny! The same thing seems to be happening today. We set a record for cold temp this morning.
My son called yesterday and we had a good long chat. My DIL was baking a pumpkin pie - she had already baked 2 others - and making cranberry sauce! I've always just used the sauce in the can.
Yesterday our hallways had a smooth grey layer over the base, and today it sounds like they are laying the new flooring. The floors above us have already been done, and apparently it's quite white! My housekeeper said it was laid from a roll, like linoleum, but she didn't think that's what it is, so I'm sure I won't know what it is either.
I have been taking half a pill for the past couple of days, and that has worked well, with no anxiety. I know I'll need at least half a pill tomorrow when I'll be going out to do errands, but I may try doing without it over the weekend.

Mema - what an awful night you had!! I'm sorry you had such a bad reaction to the shot. It's amazing that you were able to get your pies and sweet potatoes made. I'm sorry you missed church.

Kate - All the pies you and Mema were making sound wonderful - I love pie!

I hope you're both having wonderful days!!

Mema - that sounds like an awful night. I wonder if the new vaccine is more potent than the old one or if you were just the unlucky one that got the side effects. Hope you're feeling much better today.

Well, I didn't make my meeting with my sponsor today. Last night when I was going to bed, everything was fine. I felt fine, my arm was not hurting at all. Then at 2:30 this morning I woke up just shivering!! I could not get warmed up! I put on some warm fuzzy socks, had my pajama's on (top and bottoms) and I put on a sweatshirt over the pajama top and stuck my head under the covers. Plus I had an extra quilt on my bed. I was awake every hour until 9:00 this morning. And I was running a fever - 100.7. I did read on the paperwork they give you with your vaccines that these are all symptoms that CAN happen and if you are younger, you're more likely to experience them! Well, that is exactly what happened to me.

I was in and out of bed today and am close to going to bed for the night right now and it's only 7 pm. I am just shot!

DH went to church by himself at 4 pm. I did manage to get my pies made and my sweet potatoes made. Those aren't really too hard to do even when you're not feeling well. I hope tonight I sleep better and not get so chilled. I just have never had the chills like that EVER!

I did tell DH that when we have to go back for the second dose of this shot, I'm going to make sure I have NOTHING going on the next day! LOL

Kate - My DH doesn't like pecan pie, so I will probably leave all but one piece over at the cousin's house tomorrow. I have the recipe that my mom used - she always made pumpkin and pecan. Apple crisp sounds yummy, too! I hope you enjoy your day with your family!

Leslie - I hope the carpet mess in the halls is getting done quickly.
Are you feeling a bit better - less anxious? Getting your medication figured out?

Enjoy your day!

Mema Ė I had a meeting on Monday and I have another one today. There are special meetings on Thanksgiving morning but this year theyíre far away from me. The year that they were local, I dropped over for an hour break from cooking and prepping.

Iíll be making pies today, too. I donít make pecan pie b/c itís too much temptation for me. I will make apple crisp pie and pumpkin. DS always wants the traditional foods.

I remember the shingles shot causing more aches than the flu shots. Hope your pills keep you comfortable. Nice that you could jump the line and get them sooner.

Leslie Ė pulling up carpets makes a lot of dust. Hope itís cleared up soon so you donít cough every time you leave your apartment.

Sounds like the medication decrease was the right call even though itís not a smooth transition. Sorry that you had those anxiety attacks. Must be terrible to go through.

Had my meeting today and ran some errands before hand. When I got home, there was a message from Walgreen's asking if we wanted our shingles shots! I called back right away to see if they still had 2 available and they did, so DH and I went over right away. It hurt (stung) a bit and the Pharmacist said it could hurt over the next couple of days.

I had a headache when we got back, so I took 2 of my headache pills (acetaminophen/aspirin/caffeine combo) and so far no ache in my shoulder, so maybe that helped to prevent any pain. I suppose I'll know tomorrow.

Tomorrow I will meet with my sponsor, run to Walmart for a few things and come home and bake one or both of my pies - depending on time. We have our Thanksgiving Eve service at 4:00 tomorrow afternoon. I only have to bring the Pecan Pie over for the dinner. The pumpkin pie I keep at home for DH! Then after supper I'll get my sweet potato casserole ready.

Leslie - I'm sorry that you have had anxiety attacks, I hope you can get your medication back in balance to help that and hope it keeps your exhaustion at bay.
I hope your hallways get cleaned up for you - that's annoying having all that dust floating around, especially when it's getting into your lungs. I'm curious as to what kind of flooring they will put down. I suppose carpeting can require a lot of upkeep - especially during the winter months.

Kate - It would be nice to rotate homes for Bible study, but because we have quite a few "older" women, they would tend to forget whose house it was at! LOL
It does sound like your DS and his GF have a lot in common. I hope things work out for them.
When I go to Walmart tomorrow, I'm sure it is going to be a madhouse!! But if I think of that ahead of time, I can prepare myself. And I won't be in a huge hurry, so there will be no need to feel rushed. And nice that there were people around who offered their help to you!

Happy Thanksgiving Eve! emoticon

Mema - I'm not surprised that the remodelling is taking longer than expected. It's great that you are able to pitch in with the space.
That Taste of the Valley sounded wonderful! I would certainly love something like that!
I used to be quite lucky at raffles too. I was never lucky at lotteries, or anywhere that money was a prize, but other things did come my way.
I did make my calls, but kept getting busy signals at a couple of places, so I will have to try today.
Our snow seems to be a non-event - we have blue sky right now! And it doesn't seem to be windy either.

Kate - I'm very glad you like your DS's new GF. It sounds like they have a lot in common.
I am still having trouble weaning off that medication. I was doing well with it, but the day I had the scopes, I needed to take the whole tablet instead of half. Then I got back to half, and I think did without it altogether for one day, but yesterday and today, I have had terrible anxiety attacks. I haven't had any of those episodes of sudden exhaustion since I've been trying to cut down, so that's good at least.
I don't like shopping in such crowds either, but there's no point in getting upset about it. I'm glad you found the whole berry sauce.
I'm glad you got your whole turkey!

My housekeeper is here today, and my library volunteer has just been here with more books for me. The halls are very dusty right now and when I open my door I get little particles in my throat so I'm coughing a lot. They have removed all the carpeting from the halls, and will be laying some kind of new flooring - not carpeting or tile...

I hope you are both having good days.

Mema Ė remodeling ALWAYS takes longer than expected. Nice that your home is available as a substitute meeting place. We used to be in a couples study that rotated from house to house every week. It was fun b/c every one hosted once every 5-6 weeks.

The event sounds like a fun evening. I know what you mean about filling up on free samples. And I ďneverĒ win anything when I buy raffle tickets. I just think of the cost as a donation to whatever cause is running the raffle.

DSís new GF seems to be a really nice young lady. Sheís local Ė grew up in the town next door. Her family owns the restaurant where my DS bartends on weekends so they got to know him before he started dating the daughter and theyíre happy about it, too. She works in Boston as an insurance broker so itís a similar type of career as my DSís tax accounting work. They seem to be a good match.

Leslie Ė Iím glad youíre able to be back in exercise class. Does that mean youíre feeling less fatigued? Seems like cutting down on the medicine dosage is still helping.

We have snow in the forecast for today. Between that forecast and the upcoming holiday, the grocery store was mobbed yesterday. Lines at the check outs stretching back 5-7 carts. I really donít like shopping in crowds but I decided I would just put on a cheerful attitude, wait patiently as people maneuvered around each otherís carts, and relax. It was funny, people seemed to relax around me, too. When I stopped to survey the myriad of snack packs of fruit looking for pears in 100% juice, another customer stopped and asked if I needed help finding something. And when I was looking over the whole end cap of jellied cranberry sauce, a very old woman darted over to me and asked if I was looking for whole berry sauce. I was and she said she had found some ďright hereĒ. There were a last few cans hiding behind the sale sign which she lifted up for me.

And they did come by and swap out my turkey for a 2 legged one. It wasn't until late in the day that they got there. I was worried about the "pirate" sitting out on the porch all day, but I realized the temperature outside was just about the same as inside my fridge so it should be just fine. I'm sure someone at the company will take it home for dinner.

Had Bible study this morning and will have to have it one more week at my house. The remodeling is taking a bit longer than my friend expected.

Tonight I went to the Taste of the Valley up at our clubhouse with my husband's cousin and wife. Lots of good food - Beef Wellington, pizza, burgers, fish taco's, chicken piccata, bacon wrapped shrimp, pasta alfredo, mini Dairy Queen blizzards and lots of desserts. I ate way more than I should have, but I did split a lot of things with the wife of DH's cousin. So that worked out well. All these different restaurants come here for free to give away samples of their food, but they were pretty good size samples.

Then there were about 40 or 50 items for silent auction and then about 20 items for live auction. I didn't bid on anything. We were given a raffle ticket when we walked in and 2 tickets for drinks - they had beer, wine and water, so I just had my 2 waters. But I won a $5 gift certificate for a coffee shop with my raffle ticket. But I gave it to a friend of mine because I don't drink coffee and probably would never go there. She liked that. I do have a tendency to win at things like that where there is a raffle. I would say more than 50% of the time I win.

Anyway, it was a lot of fun and I'm really glad I went. I saw quite a few people that I hadn't seen in the 3 years I was caring for my mom. My DH said he was glad I had a good time and then he said, And I bet your glad I didn't go! LOL He was right about that! emoticon Would have been too much standing and too many people around for him.

Leslie - I'm glad you were able to celebrate Hanukkah at least one time with your kids. That must have been disappointing for you not to "participate" in your religion.
Did you get all your phone calls made?
Are you expecting a lot of snow? Or just a little with a lot of wind?

Kate - My DH and I usually watch the news during dinner. We have a small TV in our kitchen area. I think you're right about it being a bad habit.
You are right about parts of the Bible - when I was in the book of Numbers, I scanned a lot of the passages or other parts where there is a lot of genealogy I tend to scan that, too.
Did your DH like your DS's new GF? How was your lunch?
Too funny about your 1 legged turkey! I'm not sure I would have gotten the pirate reference, but once you explained it, I got it! LOL Nice that they could replace it so quickly!

Tomorrow I have my meeting and that's all that's on my agenda. I have a couple of errands to run before the meeting, but nothing big.

Have a great day!

Mema - the name Elizabeth George is familiar to me too, but I don't know from where.
I hope you won't have to wait too long for the shingles vaccine!
My first husband insisted that we have a Jewish wedding, and I took that to mean that he was more religious than he really was. I believe that wedding was mainly to please his parents.
During the first year we were married, we lived in Brooklyn, NY, and his aunt invited us to her Passover seder. I really wanted to go, but my husband absolutely refused. The only times we were in synagogues or temples were for weddings. So, yes, I guess you could say he was a Jew in name only, and that was a big disappointment to me. After I had converted, I had really wanted to participate in the holidays at least. Finally when our kids were about 4 and 5, I insisted that we celebrate Hanukkah, so we had the menorah, and gifts for the kids.

Kate - I'm glad you and your DH had lunch with your DS and his new GF. I hope you like her. I'm sorry your DD wasn't able to be there, but I'm sure you're right that for your DH to meet the GF, a smaller group was probably preferable.
How funny that they referred to your maimed turkey as a pirate - ha! I hope you do get the replacement today, and all the parts are there.

I've been to the exercise class this morning, and I have a bunch of calls to make after lunch.
We're supposed to get more wintry weather tomorrow - it will be colder with blowing snow.
I did finally get the November 12th issue of the New Yorker, so now I'm just one week behind. I'm glad they're not coming together!

I hope you both have good days!

Mema Ė Iíve heard of Elizabeth George. I think I read one of her books many years ago.

We donít really watch TV at all except for recordings of my favorite shows that I usually watch in the afternoons. Recently weíve been putting one on to watch during dinner Ė hummm Ė I think thatís a bad habit that we should review. We only have one TV and itís in the family room at the back of the house.

Iíve started the ďread through the BibleĒ schedules many times. I donít know if Iíve every completely finished it. There are parts that are simply boring and confusing w/ the books of the law. But I think over the many years of Bible study that Iíve covered every book in summary if not in detail.

Leslie Ė my sister married into a Jewish family but they werenít very observant. She never converted to Judaism. They celebrated both Hanukah and Christmas. Even though they divorced, they remained close and when he died, the funeral was here in the Boston area where he came from. We went to the burial and ďsat shivaĒ with his daughters. I think I like the Jewish customs around death better than the Christian ones.

Youíve had a lot of experience w/ different faiths. My DH and I still read a Psalm and pray together every morning. We had always prayed separately but when we had kids we started praying together.

I had the older shingles vaccine, too. Iíll have to remember to ask my doctor about it when I see her next spring.

One last hurrah for our birthday celebrations. Yesterday my DS arranged to take us out to lunch for our birthdays. He was coordinating w/ my DD but somehow things got miscommunicated. As we were getting to the restaurant for lunch, my DD texted my DH asking where we were going for dinner. So she and DGS missed the lunch but we still had a nice time w/ DS and his new GF. DH hadnít met her yet so it was fine having a less distracted conversation.

My Thanksgiving turkey was delivered yesterday while we were out at lunch. I went to put it in the fridge to thaw and realized it was missing one drumstick. I emailed the company and asked for a replacement. They apologized and said they will replace it today. "Just put that pirate out on the porch and we'll be there to exchange it." Took me a minute to get the pirate reference -no peg leg.

It got warm and humid here today, but we have a cool front coming in this evening and our high tomorrow is only in the low 60's. Hopefully the humidity will go away.

I did get my laundry all done and most of my ironing. And finished my lesson for tomorrow's Bible study. We are going thru the book by Elizabeth George - "Loving God with all your Mind" and then we each have a study guide as well with questions that correspond to the chapter in the book. It's been a good study.

DH and I took a golf cart ride after supper. It was a nice night.

While I was doing my laundry, my DH had one of his nice white shirts to be washed and for some reason I remembered the old commercial for Whisk laundry detergent about "ring around the collar"! My how times have changed! LOL

Kate - Of course I will pray for your friend's son Brian and will add him to my Bible study prayer list, too. Mental health can be very hard for both the person who has it as well as anyone who cares for that person.
I grew up in the Wisconsin Synod Lutheran church - similar to Missouri Synod only a bit more reserved. My DH was raised Missouri Synod and then for awhile during his first marriage, attended ELCA church. After he and I met, we "compromised" on the Missouri Synod - more relaxed on my side and more conservative on his side! emoticon
I think you're right about when couples get married later and have an "established" home already that they tend to pay for their own weddings and so things are done differently.

Leslie - Well, I'm glad you won't have to pay for another shingles shot. I'm just hoping our wait won't be too long. We were on her 4th page at Walgreen's.
You really have gone thru the gambit of different religions! Then converting to Judaism in order to be married and then not being able to celebrate those holidays - that was too bad. Was your first husband mainly a Jew in name only - if he wasn't celebrating those holidays?
Do you ever watch any evangelical programs on TV? We have a few channels that my DH calls our "church TV channels". He usually puts one of them on every Sunday morning before and while he's getting ready for church. Some are good, some not - all personal preference.
I am in the process of reading the whole Bible. Our pastor told the congregation about a "Read Scripture" app for our phones and it gives us a daily reading and a short video before starting a new book in the Bible. We started this last December, so we're almost done. It has been a great app. I think this is actually the first time I have read the ENTIRE Bible - well, come December it will be.

Hope you both have a wonderful Monday!

Mema - I'm glad you were able to meat with your sponsor.
I had the 'old' shingles vaccine, for which I paid about $200. I asked my doctor about getting the new one, which costs $150 for each of the 2 shots, and she doesn't think I need it.
I'm glad you were able to get together with your neighbours. Buffalo was in 'my neck of the woods' while I was growing up in and around Hamilton, ON.
How great that you had a video call with your son and grandkids!! When my son and his family were living in France for a year, we would have Skype calls which I loved.
I also remember when the bride and the groom's families played a much bigger role in the weddings. When my son got married, I couldn't afford to help in any way. I had to borrow money for my husband and I to get there on the bus. However, my son's uncle (father's brother) was able to contribute. I don't know if he paid for the rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding, but I do know that he hosted the brunch (for family members) the morning after the wedding. He is very kind.
One of my nieces got married in FL and her sister was married in Ireland. I wasn't able to attend either of those weddings.

Kate - I'm glad your DH didn't have to clean the wet mess out of your driveway.
I will certainly pray for your friend and her son, Brian. That is a very sad situation.

I have had experience with several religions. When I was a child, I went to the Anglican Sunday school every week, and I was eventually confirmed, when I was 13 I think. After that, one of my friends and I started visiting different churches, including a meeting of the Society of Friends, and I attended the bat mitzvah of a Jewish classmate.
I had to convert to Judaism in order to be married by a rabbi in a Jewish temple when I married my first husband. I wanted to take part in Jewish holidays, but my husband wanted no part of that. I couldn't celebrate Christian holidays either of course.
About 20 years ago, on my own, I wanted to be part of a faith community, but the Jewish community here is very small, and there is no rabbi, except one who comes for special occasions. So I went to the Catholic church, which is really quite similar to the Anglican church. I was confirmed in 1999, and was a very active participant for a long time, but eventually I just tired of going to church. I still believe in God, and pray at least twice/day. I read the Bible from cover to cover a few years ago, and then for a long time read a Psalm every morning, but I've stopped doing that too.

I hope you're both having good days!

Mema Ė I think with so many couples getting married at an older age when theyíre already settled in and live together, the parents no longer have as big a part in the wedding. A lot of couples are paying the whole bill themselves for the wedding. My DS has been part of a lot of wedding celebrations for his friends. Between traveling to different destinations and the bachelor parties, the cost of the tux, gifts, etc. itís a huge expense to be in a wedding party now.

The rain washed away some of the snow but mostly compacted it into a heavy wet mess. The temperatures are running in the high 30ís and low 40ís so itís not quite warm enough to melt it.

Because my dad was in the Air Force, we mostly went to the air base chapel and had ministers from all denominations. I got exposed to a lot of different types of worship services. We go to a Baptist Church now but for many years went to a Congregational church and neither of them had much in the way of liturgy.

I'm asking for prayers for my dear friend's son Brian. He is mid 20's and has severe mental health issues. These have led him to being in trouble with the law as well. He is currently waiting for his court date and is in complete despair and has become suicidal. Pray for his stability and strength to go through the legal proceedings, for a good outcome in court, and also for my friend who has been bearing the brunt of caring for him though these months of waiting.

She asked that I pass on this request to any prayer group I'm part of. She's the friend I went Christmas tree hunting with.

I did a video call with my son and grand kids this morning. That was fun! I asked Dakota if she would pick me out a pretty shell from the beach and then I would get it in January when I come up! They were having a good time, but my son did mention that everywhere they went they had to pay for parking! And last night they went out for kind of a groom's dinner (only I think everyone paid for themselves emoticon ) because he said the menu was almost too extensive - 30 choices of burgers, 40 different types of sandwiches and they all came with chips. When he asked if he could substitute fries, they said no, but he could order them on the side to the tune of $6.00! I thought that was a bit pricey for some fries. In the old days, I remember when the groom's parents paid for the groom's dinner. I guess things are different these days. This bride and groom have a 4 year old daughter between them, too. And I'll have to ask my DS why the wedding was in Florida because I believe they live in Iowa!

Then I got my house cleaned and we had our neighbors over. It was really nice to catch up since they have not been down in 2 years. So that was fun.

Tomorrow I will get my laundry done and I have to work on my lesson for Bible study for Monday. I can't believe it's Thanksgiving week already!

Kate - We're Lutheran - Missouri Synod and we have a 3 year Lectionary series that the church goes by, so it has all the readings picked out based on the church year. But the pastor has the discretion of doing something else if he chooses.
Did the rain wash most of the snow away for your DH? That can be quite a mess and heavy, too!

Leslie - I hope you are getting caught up on reading and emails!

Have a peaceful Sunday!

Mema Ė we used to have a bird feeder in the window when the kids were younger. One year a blue jay moved into the neighborhood and he would chase all the other birds away from the feeder.

The shingles vaccine is fairly new and the company didnít expect such a huge demand for it. Theyíre just not able to produce enough yet.

Our music director chooses our hymns and praise songs but she is really good about matching up the theme of the songs w/ the rest of the service. Baptists are ďlow churchĒ so we donít have any set liturgy for the year.

Leslie Ė hope you got a good reading time. I love quiet days.

Snow and then rain! Such a heavy wet mess!

I saw on the news that we had 7 inches of snow. It started raining around 2 in the morning so by the time we woke up, it looked like only about 3-4. I had planned to go spinning but I didnít want to send my DH out to snow blow in the pouring rain so I suggested I cancel my reservation. When I went to the website, they said that all the morning classes had been cancelled b/c the school openings had been delayed 2 hours. I was really happy that I hadnít made him go out and clear the driveway for nothing. The rain stopped before noon and he got it all cleaned out.

Kind of a busy day today. I met with my sponsor this morning for 2 hours, then went and got my booster pneumonia shot. It comes in 2 doses that have to be administered at least 1 year apart. The pharmacist says I'm good for the next 5 years, but will have to get this again because I'm not 65 yet. Then after that, I should be good. I also asked about the shingles shot and if I would have to pay anything. I don't, our insurance will cover it, but the pharm tech said they have been getting limited doses of it only twice/month. She asked if I wanted to be put on the waiting list so I said yes and to put my DH on their as well. She had about 4 pages of people! So, it looks like it could be a long wait. Not sure why they aren't getting as many vaccine doses and she didn't know why either.

After that I set up for communion, went to Walmart and came home. By then it was close to 2:00. We have some neighbors who haven't been down in 2 years, so I went over to say hello. We are having them over tomorrow for a get together about 4 pm. Will be nice to catch up. They came from New York, around the Buffalo area. Well, that is where their son lives, they have a place on Lake Ontario.

Tomorrow I will get my house cleaned, but before that I'm going to video call with my son and grand kids who are all in FL! I'm looking forward to that! I'm eager to hear how the kiddos like it down there! They are close to the Gulf.

Leslie - I'm glad you are feeling better and have had a nice relaxing day - getting in your reading.
Did you get the rain they were forecasting? Or did it turn into more snow?

Kate - Occasionally I would see a female cardinal up North and rarely see the male. But when I did, he was gorgeous! They are beautiful birds. We seem to have more Blue Jays, which are also beautiful, but I have heard they are mean.
For our hymn committee, we have a large book for all of the Sundays and church holidays in it and for each one, there is listed all the readings for that day. Then below that, is a suggested list of hymns that will correspond with the various readings. So we have some guidance in that respect. We have to pick the opening hymn, the hymn before the sermon and the closing hymn. On communion Sundays, we pick those as well. There are a lot of hymns to choose from, so I try to pick the best one's that really go with readings. Unfortunately, the other couple who is also on the committee don't always do that, and so we have some different choices because they have worked on these ahead of our meeting which I have tried to do, but don't always get the time. But we make it all work.

Have a happy Saturday!

Mema - good to hear from you! I certainly understand about a day 'getting away from' you. I have a lot of those days.
How wonderful that your DH cooked - I love Beef & Barley soup!
We have been getting more snow, but today there's also supposed to be rain - I'm glad I'm not out driving!

Kate - I love the 'cardinal and his wife', hahaha!
You're right about the recovery day on Wednesday. I felt much better yesterday, and I'm still fine today.
Did you get to the spin class? I hope the roads were OK if you went out.

I'm just having another quiet day today, and now I'm off to read.

I hope you're both having good days.

Mema Ė weíve had a cardinal and his wife living in our neighborhood last summer. Iíd see them sitting on the fence posts Ė such a stunning bright red for the male.

I really hate it when I canít fall asleep. It always makes the next day feel so draggy. Nice of your DH to cook again.

Do you have themes that you follow for the hymns? Of course this time of year itís Christmas music. But are you given an idea of the topics of the sermons so you can choose hymns that support the ideas?

Leslie Ė between the poor nightís sleep during the prep and the left over drugs in the body, it always takes me a day or two after that procedure to feel normal. Your day wasnít ďuselessĒ it was a recovery day.

We have snow now. It came over night and weíve got several inches. Itís above freezing and raining now so I hope it all gets washed away by mid-day. I'm scheduled for spin class this morning and I'm giving myself a lot of encouragement to get out the door this morning. It's not like it never snows here. I can't be a wimp all winter.

Yesterday got away from me and I was super tired last night. The night before I didn't fall asleep until after 3 am and then had to get up early for Bible study at church. I was going to take a nap in the afternoon but it never happened, so by 10:30 I was wiped! And when I got back from Bible study, DH had Beef Barley soup cooking for supper! Two nights in a row he cooked! emoticon

Today, I didn't have to do a lot. I did work on picking out hymns for the Hymn committee I'm on. Another couple and the church president are also on the committee and we meet about every 3 months and go over the hymns for the next 3 months. But that takes a lot of time, so at least I'm caught up for our next meeting the end of January.

Tomorrow I'll meet with my sponsor and then go to Walgreens to get my booster pneumonia shot. I could have gone today, but didn't feel like going out of the house.

Leslie - I'm glad to hear you didn't have any polyps this time. My last time I had polyps but not the kind that can turn cancerous.
I'm glad you were able to get your fast food afterwards!
Did you get more snow up your way?

Kate - Yes, I do have 2 Bible studies that I go to. One here where I live and the one at church. DH and I also attend adult Sunday school after church.
Are you getting hit with the storm that's making it way up by you? Some of the places looked just terrible!
Love the cookies! How cute!
Your presents from your DD sound lovely! I love the look of cardinals.

Have a great Friday!

Mema - I hope all is well with you!

Kate - happy birthday to your husband for today then! Today is also the birthday of one of my nieces. Those cookies your friend made look good - enjoy them! It would be nice for just you and your DH to go out this weekend.
It's very cold here today - it was about 12 F here this morning, but feeling colder. I hope your roads won't get too icy. I don't blame you for not wanting to drive on icy roads.

Yesterday was kind of a useless day for me. I was just exhausted from the procedures on Tuesday. I missed the exercise class yesterday morning, and didn't really accomplish anything. Today I have ordered meds and groceries, and made some important calls. Now I am waiting for the deliveries.

I hope you both have good days today.

Mema - hope you had a good day after all your running around to the stores.

Leslie Ė I did remember your procedure was Tuesday, but I tend to think of the days before as being part of the whole thing. You canít really do anything the day before b/c of the prep. Glad the results were good.

My DHís birthday is today (Thursday). I just got a bit scrambled on the days w/ being away and traveling. My friend in CA always makes cookies for holidays and she sent some home w/ me. Iím planning on serving the special birthday cookies tonight.

We were planning on doing something w/ the kids this weekend but DD is working so weíll probably go out for dinner on the next weekend. Itís Thanksgiving next Thursday so weíll have a few days after that. DH and I might go out this weekend just the 2 of us.

Weíre supposed to get our first snow late today into tomorrow. The forecast keeps varying the amount from mostly rain to a couple inches of snow. Iím headed to the Y this morning for yoga class. Iím also signed up for spin class tomorrow. If the weather is really bad, I might cancel the spin. I donít like driving when itís really icy on the roads.

Kate, I'm glad you had a good birthday, and how great that you got a better seat on your flight home! That was another great birthday present. I love window seats when I fly.
I knew about the chick peas in hummus of course, but not tahini.
Happy birthday to your DH today! My first husband and I also had birthdays 2 days apart, so we celebrated on the day in between. What will you do for the family celebration? (Oh, one place you said his birthday was Wednesday, but today you said Thursday, so is it tomorrow?)
We had snow for about 24 hours, and may get more yet today. I think it only amounted to about 4 inches here in town, but some areas nearby got 10 inches.
The gifts from your DD sound lovely! I love bowls, and a tiny one full of colours sounds very special! And the cardinal for the tree sounds wonderful too!

Mema - My goodness, we get strong winds here, up to 40 mph or even more, quite often. I worry about being blown over when the wind is like that.
How great that your DH was making chili! That's what I'm thinking of having tonight.
I just had my scopes yesterday - it sounded as if you thought I had had them on Monday. The prep did not go well - I won't go into all the details, but I woke up in a wet bed yesterday morning at 3:15, and was afraid to lie down again. I didn't get to bed until 11:30 Monday night, hoping I wouldn't have problems during the night.
Anyway, all was well at the hospital. I didn't have any polyps this time.
My friend picked me up and we got good meals at a drive-through restaurant, which we ate here at my place.
I am still feeling exhausted today even though I slept well last night.

I hope you're both having good days!

Leslie - all recovered from the colonoscopy? hope all the results were good.

Mema Ė I love it when I get into that mode where I can go all day long and get so much accomplished. And coming home to a bowl of hot chili sounds like the perfect way to end the day.

Do you have 2 Bible studies? One at someoneís home and one at church? Sounds nice.

We smelled smoke one day but my friendís DH said that it probably wasnít from the fires b/c of the wind direction. California is such a big state compared to the New England states.

They talked about possible snow here, but it looks like we will dodge that bullet. We are getting down into the teens tonight but the precipitation will hold off until tomorrow and be rain.

I had a wonderful long sleep last night and woke up at 6 when DH brought my coffee. Could probably have slept a bit longer but itís good to get back onto my normal schedule. The dogs will be here today so Iíll get out in the sunlight to walk them.

DD stopped by quickly last night on her way home to drop off birthday gifts. One for my birthday Monday and one for DH's birthday on Thursday. She got me a lovely tiny bowl full of colors and a cardinal to hang on the Christmas tree. I love birds on my tree.

What a busy day - was at Walmart at 7:30 this morning and basically on the go until 4:00 pm. But I got done everything I needed to get done. And DH had the chili all made - it was very good since it was a cold one today - I don't think it ever got over 45 and it was windy again all day. Tomorrow morning is Bible study at church and I think that's it for now unless something else comes up. I'll probably do my ironing. And work on my hymns for church.

Kate - I have heard that San Diego has perfect weather year round. I used to have an aunt and uncle who lived out there. Did you see any smoke from the fires when you were out there? That is just awful.
I'm glad you had such a nice lunch and visit on your b-day with your friends. And how cool was that, that you got bumped up on your flight!! I think God was smiling down on you on your b-day!
I never knew tahini was ground sesame seeds - learn something new everyday.
Your family celebration for your b-days sounds like a very nice day!

Leslie - I hope you are feeling better from your procedures.

Happy Hump Day!

I'm home!! It's 50 degrees, grey and raining and I'm glad to be home!

San Diego weather was perfect - I opened the door onto my balcony as soon as I walked in the room and it stayed open the whole time I was there.

My friend who lives in San Diego came w/ her husband and picked me up at the hotel on Monday morning. They took me out for lunch and had the waitress surprise me w/ a piece of birthday ice cream cake. Then we went to their house. They have a lovely home w/ a back yard meant for entertaining. We had a lovely time sitting out there and talking. A truly nice way to spend my birthday.

I had one last birthday gift last night. I had a lay over in Salt Lake. Since I was flying "cheapest fare" I didn't have seat assignments and had to get one at the podium for each flight. At Salt Lake the guy was telling everyone "I have 18 seat assignments to do. I'll call you up when I've got yours." When I was called up, I mentioned how much extra work this is making for the gate attendants and we chatted a bit about the process. I got my boarding pass for a middle seat half way down the plane and sat down to wait for boarding in zone 4. Then right as the started the regular boarding he called me up again. I was surprised and said I had a seat. He grinned and said he had a better one for me. He upgraded me to the "comfort plus" seats and gave me a window w/ no one in the middle seat. Sweet!!

Leslie Ė thinking about what the prep is like, Iím sure youíre just about as tired as I am. Enjoy your burger afterwards.

Iíve had both the Skor and Heath bars and like them both. Hummus is basically mashed chick peas w/ tahini which is ground sesame seeds.

Mema Ė sounds like youíve got a good group for your study.

Chili sounds yummy. I think Iíll make that tomorrow. Itís supposed to get colder around here, too.

My DHís birthday is Wednesday. I already told the kids weíd do a family celebration on Saturday.

We only had 5 of us at Bible study but that was because 2 of the gals had a Red Hat outing and 2 of the women aren't down here yet and the other one had something else. But we still had a good study. I think we have 1 more week at my house, and then we can return to my friend's home.

Since it turned cool/cold down here I thought it would be a good time to clean my oven! We actually have a freeze watch for tonight and a freeze warning for tomorrow night! And we have sustained winds of 25-30 mph!! We just don't get that up in WI. It may be windy, but we have gusts of 20-25, not a constant wind and at that speed.

Tomorrow I think I will get up early and head to Walmart right away. Then I have my meeting and after that a Hymn Meeting at church. So since I'll be gone quite a bit of the day, DH is going to make chili! emoticon

Leslie - My DH also cuts our brisket into 3 pieces because they only sell them in packages of 14-16 lb. So, we have 2 more that he'll be able to fix this winter.
How did your scopes go? Did you get to the drive-thru for lunch afterwards? Hope you got some rest afterward, too.

Kate - Wow - that was a lot of money for so little food. And how odd the way they serve it. It's the same way down here as well as in MN/WI if you get 2 veggies, it's a good 2 cups worth!
Well, I'm not sure if you are flying right now as I write or on your layover. Anyway, I hope you have/had a good flight.
Your DH's b-day is close to yours, isn't it? What will you both do for your b-days?

Have a great day!

Kate - Happy birthday again! I hope you are having a lovely day! emoticon
Of course, Salt Lake City - I don't know why I didn't think of that!
I'm sorry you're allergic to hummus - I didn't know it contained sesame.
I'm glad you at least did get some veggies there.
I am drinking my prep - actually I've had the first batch and have to repeat it this evening. I've also taken the 3 pills as ordered. I expect I'll be on the toilet all night.

Mema - that brisket sounds fantastic. The store I usually go to for meat doesn't carry brisket - I had to request it when I wanted it. When I lived in WI, I would cut the brisket in half, and make corned beef with one half and sauerbraten with the other.
It sounds like a wonderful dinner! I love Heath bars, but can't get them here. We have Skor bars which are good but not as good as Heath.
They do put us out for these procedures. I could probably stand the colonoscopy with just good sedation, but not the endoscopy - they'd never get past my gag reflex if I were awake!
I'm glad you enjoy the Bible study so much!
I hope you are also having a good day.

Mema - your pastor does sound like a good one.

Thanks for the birthday wishes.

On Sunday we started a bit later Ė 10:00 Ė but we didnít break for lunch. There was a platter of hummus and veggies at lunch time. I canít eat hummus b/c Iím allergic to sesame so I just had a nice serving of cherry tomatoes, carrot and celery sticks. By the time we ended at 4:30 a bunch of us all headed straight out for an early dinner.

Leslie Ė ugh! That colonscopy prep is nasty. Hope the procedure goes well and you have good results.

SLC is Salt Lake City in Utah. Iím glad Iím not flying back into snow. Itís still in the low 40ís back home.

As far as food goes, the street ( 3 blocks long) between the hotel and the beach was lined w/ little restaurants of all kinds Ė most of them fairly high priced with ďinterestingĒ menus and very good food. But Iím used to having entrťes come w/ a side of starch and a side of veggies. If you skip the starch and ask for double veggies, you get about 2 cups of veg. Here there was, at most, one side. None of the restaurants had a small side salad. Most of the veggies were a separate order, cooked in some kind of sauce and the servings were small. Last night I paid 5.95 each for a half cup of spinach and green beans. Just weird for a place that is supposedly ďhealthyĒ.

Leslie - DH thaws the brisket in the frig. After it's thawed out, he trims just a little of the fat off the top and then seasons it with Adams Brisket Rub and puts it in the frig overnight. Then he bakes the brisket on a cookie sheet covered with foil at 300 or maybe 325 degrees for about 5 hours. I think the last hour he turned the oven down to 225 just to keep it warm. While the brisket is baking, he checks to see how much grease/liquid is in the bottom of the pan and will take a baster and remove it. It comes out nice and tender with a real good flavor. He also quartered some red potatoes and onions and put some of the juice from the brisket over those and baked them (in a separate baking dish). And then he peeled and quartered some carrots, blanched them and then put melted butter, brown sugar and some honey on those and baked them, too. It was a delicious meal. Our guests brought a Waldorf-type salad made with shredded cabbage instead of romaine lettuce. That was delicious. I made a pan of brownies and frosted them with milk chocolate chips that I melted and threw in about a 1/2 cup Heath brickle bits! Great meal and good company. So, since DH did all the cooking, I did all the clean up. But most of it went into the dishwasher!
The Bible study group is 10 women. We've had less at times, but no more than 10. We like the small group so we can have more discussion and more intimate conversations when needed. So, it's a great group.
How much snow did you end up with?
I don't envy you with your clear liquids tomorrow - do you have to drink the prep as well? I have a hard time finishing it all, but it usually works well for me right away - if you know what I mean! emoticon I'm glad you are having the procedure in the morning, too and I hope you can get your burger afterwards. Do they put you out for the procedure? They did that for me. So the actual procedure is a breeze - it's just the getting ready for it part that is awful! LOL

Kate - That was a long day on Saturday. How was Sunday? Did they do anything special? Did you do anything yourself after the conference was all over since it finished at 4:00? That's nice that you have a friend you can spend Monday with (especially since it's your b-day!) before you have to head to the airport.
If you can, I would love to hear about some of the things you learned - after you've had time to digest it all.
I also thought it odd to be able to get just plain veggies - especially out there. Could you just order yours plain or w/out sauce? Sometimes restaurants will let you do that.

One of the nice things about having company for me is I get my house all nice and clean! My mom used to say If you want your house cleaned, just invite company over! LOL I would have cleaned it anyway, but this just gave me that extra oomph!

This morning before church our pastor always gives announcements. He was talking about the Bible study we have right after service and he said how we have some good conversations. Then he said - Is Leann here? And of course I raised up my hand and said yes and then he said, Well, for sure we'll have good conversation then! Everyone laughed and I did too. He said that because I do have a tendency to ask a lot of questions and sometimes to challenge him as well. I thought that was funny! After the service, when we were going thru the line to shake his hand, he asked if that was ok that he called me out before the service - I told him yes and he said, You know I love you, sister! He is really a nice man and a good pastor! God has blessed us well!

Hope you all have a great Monday!

Mema - the 'Taste of the Valley' sounds really good. I'm sorry your DH doesn't want to go, but glad you do have people to go with. The auctions wouldn't really appeal to me, but the food tasting does!
I'm glad the visit with DH's dad went well. Going to the Mexican restaurant afterward sounds like a real treat!
The brisket sounds wonderful. I'm sure you'll all like that. How does your DH cook it?
How big a group is your Bible study? Nice you can have it at your house to start with.
I'm sure it would be hard to get cable on and off as you move back and forth.

Kate - wow, that really was a long day on Saturday - I don't blame you for staying in the hotel to eat and going to bed early. I'm glad you have been learning things.
That is surprising that veggies are hard to get there! You'd think it would be easier, with all the veggies grown in California!
I'm sorry your flight back is so broken up, and with a long layover. Is SLC St. Louis? Too bad you couldn't have had a long flight going back too.

We are getting more snow off and on today, but it doesn't look very deep yet.
I have a huge appetite today - that must be because I'll only be able to have clear liquids tomorrow, the day before my endoscopy/colonoscopy Tuesday. I'll be glad to get that over with! I'm glad mine will be done in the morning. When my friend picks me up afterward, I hope we'll get burgers at a drive-through restaurant. I'm sure I won't have energy to do much more.

I hope you're both having good days!

This is the last day of the conference/retreat. Yesterday was long 8 AM to 6 PM so a group of us just ate in the hotel and then I went to bed. I'm not sure what all we'll do today but it ends at 4 so I'll be ready for a break.

I've learned a lot from this coach over the last 6 months but she has a very different style than I do and I'll have to absorb and consolidate the material for a while until I can share it in a meaningful way. It's not just something I can pull good 'nuggets' of information out and teach to someone else.

I'm finding that getting veggies is surprisingly hard here. The restaurants don't serve plain veggies as a side. There are a few veggies cooked up in sauces but not just plain green beans or broccoli like I get at home.

Mema - glad you had a nice visit w/ your FIL.

I will try to get some sleep on the plane but I have a long layover in SLC so the flight will be divided into 3 chuncks - flight one, layover, flight two. Not really enough time to do much sleeping. On the way out I had a 6 hour flight to LA. That would have been long enough to snooze but it was a morning flight.

We're having a "Taste of the Valley" event up at the clubhouse next Monday night (19th) so I purchased my ticket for that. DH has his meeting that night and we went a few years ago and he didn't like it much at all. Too many people and too much standing. But I enjoyed it and will go with his cousin and wife! They have all sorts of restaurants come to our clubhouse and then give samples of their food. Plus they are going to have a silent auction and a live auction. Not sure what the auction items will be. So I'm looking forward to that.

Today we visited DH's dad. That went fine. The best part was DH took me to Taco Palenque for an early supper!! Very good! And so I got some laundry done this morning and am finishing the rest tonight.

Tomorrow DH is making a brisket and we are having his cousin and wife for dinner. We were supposed to go out last spring in lieu of Easter, but never made it. I had cancelled having Easter because of my situation with my mom and DH's mom was getting sicker, too.

Monday we'll start Bible study again for the season. We are having it at my house for a couple of weeks while the gal whose leading it is getting her kitchen remodeled.

Leslie - I'm so glad you seem to have more energy! I hope it was just the medication.
We are in a cool spell now for the next week, I think. It was only in the 50's here today and cloudy and misty off and on. I think the rain is supposed to stop. I don't mind the cool weather at all. It actually helps me to get in the mood for the holidays!
That's good that your cable bill is so low. It wouldn't pay for us to get something like you have with just basic channels because we do get quite a few "free" channels down here. We could probably use something like that up north, but I'm not sure how that would work, cancelling or putting on vacation and then starting up again. We used to do that and sometimes it was a pain. They (the Dish company) would say it was our problem if we couldn't get the signal and my DH would tell them it was theirs and so then they would come out here and discover it was their problem after all and it was just a hassle and then the price kept increasing as well.

Kate - The Cowboy church is mainly in the south, but I guess they are trying to get it further north. I had never heard of it, either until we got down here. DH and I just go to a "regular" church! LOL
I've never heard of that kind of yoga. Did you like it? You said it was different from what you're used to.
How nice the women there celebrated your birthday! emoticon early in case I forget as well!
I suppose you'll be very tired on Tuesday after flying all night. Can you sleep on planes? I could, but I have sleep apnea, so I would be waking everyone up with my snoring/gasping for air! LOL I have a CPAP machine I use every night. I love that! I know a few people who say that cannot get used to wearing it, and I tell them it's actually very dangerous not to. When we stop breathing during the night, our blood pressure goes up. But you can only give them information.......you can't make 'em wear the mask.

Enjoy your Sunday!!

Mema - I understand your not writing for a couple of days. I'm sorry I haven't written - I've had a few busy days.
I'm glad you had a good time with your aunt!
My cable bill used to be over $40/month, but I called them to cancel, and then they talked me into keeping cable at this low rate. I watch very little TV, but it is good to have for special events, like elections. I have only the basic channels, but that's plenty for me.
Are you having your cooler days now? We had some snow yesterday, but then it changed to rain. Now we've had more snow and the grass and the street are both covered.
No, they don't take blood at the doctor's office. I was lucky to get a ride to the lab, and be taken in right away! I got my results online, and all is well except my hemoglobin is a little low, as always, and B12 is high... My doctor didn't have an explanation about why I get so tired so suddenly, but she wanted me to cut down my anti-anxiety med, so I've done that. I actually stayed up until after 11 last night!! So far, so good.
I'm sorry about your friend's husband who died.
I hope you and DH have a good visit with his dad today!
The Cowboy Church does sound very interesting! I haven't heard of them before.

Kate - I envy you in San Diego!! It sounds as if you are having a very enjoyable time!
How nice to have a birthday celebration there! Happy birthday for Monday in case I miss the day.
Where is your stopover on the way home, and for how long? I really like direct flights myself, but I assume that wasn't an option for you...

Nothing really new here, except I do feel less tired, with the reduction in medication, so maybe that was the problem. I have been spending hours online every day, then reading, then watching Netflix in the evenings. I finished watching Fargo (the first season was the best, very funny), and now I'm watching Life in Pieces which is really wonderful - also funny.

I hope you're having a great Saturday!

Mema Ė Iíve never heard of a Cowboy Church. Sounds interesting and very practical for that part of the country.

Thursday the retreat was mostly the speaker. Yesterday we did a lot of sharing in the morning and Kundalini yoga in the afternoon. Quite different from the yoga classes I've taken.

Yesterday after lunch, the ladies held a surprise birthday celebration for 2 of us. My birthday is Monday and hers is Tuesday. We had mini cupcakes and we each got a card signed by all the other women. Sweet.

The conference/retreat will be done Sunday evening. I have a friend here in San Diego who will pick me up from the hotel on Monday morning and weíll spend go out to lunch and spend some time doing something until I need to be at the airport around 4:30 Ė 5 PM for my flight. I will fly all night w/ a stop over and be home on Tuesday morning.

Well, it did turn cold and rainy here today, but I like the cooler weather. I cleaned my blinds in my living room and dining room today. I still have the 2 bedrooms to do.

We went up for the memorial service for our friend - they belonged to a Cowboy Church. According to Wikipedia - just a small excerpt:

"Cowboy churches are local Christian churches within the cowboy culture that are distinctively Western heritage in character. A typical cowboy church may meet in a rural setting in a barn, metal building, arena, sale barn, or old western building, have its own rodeo arena, and a country gospel band. Baptisms are generally done in a stock tank. The sermons are usually short and simple, in order to be better understood by the parishioners. Some cowboy churches have covered Arenas where rodeo events such as bull riding, team roping, ranch sorting, team penning and equestrian events are held on weeknights. It has been said that a cowboy church must have five principle characteristics: non-denominational, no offerings collected or solicited, no membership, no dress code, and held in non-traditional settings."

So the "minister", dressed in cowboy hat and boots gave the sermon. Which was very good! And we have a woman who lives in our club that writes and performs her own Bible musicals so she sang 2 songs. It was very nice overall.

Tomorrow DH and I will go over and visit his dad. I'll do my laundry before and after. It's only supposed to get to 57 tomorrow and the rain should stop in the morning.

Kate - I'm so glad you are having a good time. And I love finding new little places to eat! When do you fly back? I thought you said something about a red eye flight???

Leslie - hope all is well!

Have a great Saturday!

Mema Ė 90ís is hot. Glad youíre getting a break from the heat. Sounds like youíre all settled in and have picked up the reins of your winter life.

Leslie Ė how did the dr. visit go?

I walked a bit yesterday morning and found a cute little place for breakfast. After that there were meetings all morning and afternoon. Most of us went out for lunch as a bunch and again for dinner. There are about 15 ladies and we had 10 at lunch and 10 at dinner (not quite the same mix). Itís been a lot of fun.

Kate - I'm glad you are having a great time! Hope you sleep all night and not wake up. I did a similar thing - last night went to bed about 11 pm and woke up at 2:30 thinking it was about 6 am because I felt like I had slept a long time! LOL

Leslie - I hope you got some answers from your doctor about your tiredness. Can they not take blood right there for you? Instead of making you drive (or get a ride) to a lab?

Ran a couple of errands this morning while DH was at Bible study. Then he had an Investor's Club meeting at the club house, so I walked around the house for about 20 minutes! It was way too hot to walk outside. Then DH and I took a golf cart ride around after dinner. I saw someone had a Christmas tree up already!! Wow!

Tomorrow we have a memorial service to go to up at the clubhouse. One of the ladies that comes to my Bible study, her husband passed away. He had cancer in multiple places, but still sad.

Then on Saturday, both DH and I will go over and see his dad. I haven't been over there yet since we got down here, but DH wanted me to go along this time.

We are in for a cold front tomorrow. It was in the mid 90's today and by tomorrow afternoon it will be raining, North wind and about 60! What a change. We will be having several cool days though, that will be nice.

Have a great Friday!

Mema Ė Iíll suggest the higher protein food to DS although the vet may have another suggestion.

Leslie Ė how did your Dr. visit go? Are you getting tests?

I took 1/2 a sleeping pill so I wouldn't wake up early. I still did wake at 2AM but I got back to sleep until 6:30 local time. That's about 9 hours of sleep even though it was broken into 2 sessions. Off to find some breakfast and get ready for stuff to start at 9. Have a great day.

Hello from sunny San Diego. I met up w/ a couple of the other ladies at the airport and we shared an Uber. Then a bunch of us went to the beach and walked for over 2 hours. Heading out to dinner now. Having a blast already.

Good morning! I was a bit tired from being at my aunt's house and then I was watching the voting results. So I apologize for not writing.

Had a wonderful time with her. I was able to help her get some things set up and get her to the store's she needed to go to. And both nights I was there she said she slept great! Her DD and SIL will be arriving today.

Pat - I hope you are feeling more positive and will join us on this chat thread.

Kate - I hope you have a great trip! Glad to hear that the tests on the dog came back good, but that meant no diagnosis. I hope changing up his food helps. We used to give our dogs a higher protein food in the winter ( before we started coming down here for the whole season). It added calories to their diet for the cold weather. That could help your DS's dog gain weight.

Leslie - I hope you can get some answers from your doctor today about your tiredness. But I'm glad you are making it to the exercise class.
Your cable bill is really inexpensive! At least compared to what we would pay here, even for an introductory offer which would end after a year.

I will meet with my sponsor today and not sure what else is on the agenda.

Have a great Monday!

Hi, Leslie, glad you had enough energy to get to the exercise class.

I hope your appointment goes well tomorrow and the doctor is able to find out why you've been so tired out.

I'll be leaving for CA early tomorrow morning and coming back home on the red eye Monday night arriving here Tuesday morning. I'll be bringing my computer so I expect I'll be checking in as usual.

Yesterday was grey and nasty looking but it wasnít raining so I spread wheelbarrow loads of dirt on the bare patches in the lawn and spread some grass seed. Not sure how well it will take so late in the year, but the weather isnít too cold.

Today it's supposed to be raining all day. I'll be out doing stuff - pedicure, lunch and Bible Study w/ a friend, and a haircut. And I'll be walking b/c my DH needs the car today - a very rare occurrence! His boss is in town from Austin and is meeting w/ his staff at the local company office.

All the tests on DSís dog came back fine so theyíre planning on changing his food to see if he can gain some weight back. Poor guy has not only his ribs but also his backbone and hip bones showing.

Pat - it's good to hear from you, but I'm sorry you haven't been feeling positive! I hope things will start to look up for you very soon.

Kate - You have certainly made a lot of use of that dirt! I think your ideas for using the rest of it sound good, but a lot of work for today if it's going to rain tomorrow.
How long will you be in San Diego? I do hope you'll have a wonderful time there!
I hope that dog will be all right, poor thing.

Mema - I hope you're having a good time with your aunt!

Nothing new for me today. I've been to the exercise class, and now it's time to read. emoticon

Pat Ė hope you can change your thoughts to positive ones. I found working the 12 steps did that for me.

Mema Ė enjoy your time w/ your aunt. Itís nice you can be with her while sheís waiting for her children to arrive in TX.

Leslie Ė I do like to drink the flavored seltzer waters from time to time.

That sounds very inexpensive for cable. We have a bundle that includes TV, internet and phone so itís a lot more but includes a lot more, too.

Weíre dog sitting my DSís first dog. Heís been getting very skinny. Heís lost 15 pounds since the spring. The vet is doing testing to see whatís up. DS is away on business trip Sunday to Thursday and didnít want to board him w/ the other dogs while heís not healthy. So we have him boarding here. Even though Iíll be away starting Wednesday, DH said he could manage one dog. Especially since the poor dog is mostly curled up on the couch sleeping. Poor thing.

DH and I spent Sunday afternoon shoveling dirt. Weíve reduced the pile down to about 20% of what it was at first. Iíve topped off my veggie garden so itís up to the top of the frame. The low place where we took out the oak tree is leveled off and planted w/ grass. Now what am I going to do w/the rest of the dirt? There is a place in the back corner that has some bushes that need to be removed? Perhaps Iíll dig them out and put dirt there? There are a few bare patches in the back lawn, too, where I could spread some dirt and grass seed. IDK. Iíll see what I can get done today b/c Tuesday itís going to rain and Wednesday Iíll be on my way to San Diego.

Mema - I'm glad you got everything set up for communion. It's great that your pastor has a sense of humour!
Yes, I will be seeing my doctor on Wednesday this week. She has been away, so that's why it has taken so long to get an appointment. I imagine she'll send me to the lab for blood tests. So I will have to call the bus for a ride to the lab, and again for a ride home. I miss my car on days like that.
My cable bill is just $19.20/month, so I don't think that's too bad. I don't watch TV in the evenings because most of the shows are on too late for me, and I don't have a way to record them.
I did talk to my BIL and he will talk to Greg about the divorce papers. I really just want to get this done.

Kate - those are great photos!
The only pop I know anything about is what I buy. I really drink very little of it. A 12-pack will last at least 12 weeks. The other thing I drink, besides plain water, is Lime Perrier, which has no calories of course. It's a refreshing treat.
It's great that your DD works for an agency for which she's so well suited.
It's 32F here this morning, but supposed to go up to the 40s.
Good luck getting all the dirt moved before you go away.

I hope you both have lovely Sundays!

Leslie Ė sorry youíre having to wait so long for your divorce and that your husband is dragging his feet.

Nice that you got your grocery order early and it had your Coke. Itís been so long since Iíve had soda, I donít even know all the different types anymore.

When I get a big squash, I just stab it a few times and then put it in the oven to soften before I try to cut it.

Yes, my DD is in social work. She works for a non-profit that targets families w/ adopted children. It really suits her since sheís adopted, too.

Mema Ė warm this time of year is upper 60ís. Our usual average in November is low to mid 50ís.

Sounds like youíre all set for your visit.

We donít use a common cup for communion Ė just the little disposable plastic ones. When we went to a big old church in Boston, they had gold cups. The ushers always had to check the trays when they came to the end of the aisles to make sure all the cups had been returned to the tray. The deacons and their wives washed, dried and polished them all before putting them away in the safe.

We had such a wind storm yesterday. The trees have been stripped of almost all their leaves and the yard is covered. I have a plastic tarp over my pile of dirt and had to keep going out and pulling it back in place and putting more bricks and stones on top to weigh it down.

I'm leaving for 5 days in CA on Wednesday morning so I'm trying to get all the dirt moved before that. This afternoon should be sunny but cold. They're predicting rain on Monday and Tuesday.

I did get everything set up for communion today. After I was done, I texted my pastor to let him know that I put a bottle of wine in the room that is just off the alter in case he needs more for the common cup (they started using that in addition to individual cups). He texted me back "I hope you put a straw next to it" emoticon I had a good laugh at that one. That is another nice thing about our new pastor - he has a good sense of humor.

Then I got my laundry done and cleaned DH's bathroom and my bathroom. I got some of my things packed for going to my aunt's house and will pack the rest of the toiletries in the morning. I'm really looking forward to spending a couple of days with her. She has been very good to me over the years and especially when she came and saw my mom every day while I was in MN last winter! She and I have a lot of fun together, too!

Leslie - is it this week you go see your doctor? I hope he/she can help you with your tiredness. But I'm glad you slept in and got the rest you needed.
I prefer to watch "regular" TV if there are good shows on, but up in WI we very seldom get reception up there so that's why I end up watching more Netflix up there. We gave up having Dish or Direct TV or cable years ago when we could really get most of what we wanted online. We didn't see a real need for paying a high cable bill. They always seem to start low, but in no time your up to $100/month!
I'm sorry your husband is dragging his feet on your divorce. I hope your BIL returns your call.

Kate - yes, my DH runs errands much more down here because everything is so close. If he goes to town up North, it's an all day affair for him. And he kind of enjoys shopping.
I hope you can get rid of all of your dirt or find a place for it. I suppose it would be a bit of a problem when it snows. What have your temperature's been like for you now? You mentioned it was warm the other day.

I hope your Sunday is blessed!!

Sorry for not posting yesterday - I was very tired all day, and had a long nap in the morning, and went to bed early last night, and slept until almost 7 this morning, which is very late for me!

Mema - I'm glad that wart has been frozen and will just fall off.
I'm glad the pizza buffet was good! That movie about J. Paul Getty does sound sad.
It's great that you have a friend to discuss the Bible study with. I can imagine the mess at their house!
How nice for your aunt that she is hardly on her own at all.
You have a lot of TV shows to watch! I only watch my soap, The Y&R, but watch everything on Netflix online.
I'm glad your DH was able to visit his dad. I know what you mean about enjoying some time to yourself at home. Of course now I have that all the time, but I used to crave it when I didn't live alone.
I'm really not a fan of kale, but do love spinach and broccoli! I need to eat them more often. I got a squash with my groceries, but need to wait until Tuesday when my housekeeper will be here - I need her to cut the squash in half for me. It's the same if I buy cabbage...
I had to take an iron supplement in the past. Now I take a vitamin/mineral for women over 50, which has less iron in it...

Kate - I don't blame you for taking a break from Hallowe'en.
I'm really sorry your DD is overwhelmed with her new responsibilities. I hope she is able to delegate some things, so it's not all on her! Is she in social work? I know that would be very hard with not enough staff!
I did place a small grocery order today, especially because of the Coke! I always order Coke Life, which has half the calories of regular Coke, but today I said if they didn't have that, I would take regular Coke! I got the Coke Life, so I'm happy. I was surprised the groceries came so early! Now I probably won't have to order again for 3 weeks.
I am waiting for a call back from my husband's brother. My husband needs to sign and date the divorce papers he should have received over 2 weeks ago, but he hasn't sent them back to the guy who's helping me. This has been going on since June, and I've already paid over $500, and will have to pay more for the final paperwork. If he's dragging his feet, he needs to know that if I should die first, he'll be responsible for my debt - I know he has a horror of debt, so that should get him moving! I hate to be bugging his brother, but I don't have Greg's phone number, and he'd probably hang up on me if I called him anyway.
It sounds like you have places for that dirt to go, so it won't have to stay in the driveway.

I hope you're both having good days!

Mema Ė sounds like you had a nice visit w/ your friend. Hope your time w/ your aunt goes well.

Does your DH get out more b/c things are closer and there is less driving?

I forgot it was communion week until you mentioned it Ė 1st Sunday of the month.

Leslie Ė did you make another grocery order so you could get your coke?

Itís pouring rain outside. Yesterday was surprisingly warm and I moved some of the dirt pile. I added some more to the area where we had the oak tree removed which left a hollow and I planted some grass seed. I hope the rain doesnít wash it all away. And my veggie garden is all cleared out and ready to get some added dirt. Not sure how much Iíll end up w/ after Iím done w/ that or where Iíll put it. DH says he doesnít want a pile of dirt on the driveway when the snow starts. LOL.

I had a nice long visit with my friend today - the one who's doing the Bible study I previously led. She's planning on finishing our study from last year and has another study in mind. I did tell her that maybe after taking this year off (w/out the stress of my mom) that I may want to lead next year, but we'll see then. She did ask if we could meet at my house because she and her husband are having their kitchen completely re-done - cabinets, counters, back splash and that popcorn ceiling stuff removed from the kitchen and dining room. So she and her husband will be "chewing sheet rock dust" as my DH would say for the next several weeks.

DH went over to his dad's today - he's been kind of making Friday's his day to visit. Up north, he rarely goes anywhere by himself so it's nice when we do get down here. He does shopping, his meeting and other meetings for church or Investor's Club so I get some time alone at home. In WI I'm always the one leaving! LOL

Tomorrow morning I'll go over to church to set up communion and then probably come home and do laundry since I will be leaving to go to my aunt's after church on Sunday. If you don't see a post from me it will be because I couldn't get on their wi-fi. I know from last year, they didn't always have the best connection down there. And my aunt has never had a computer herself.

Kate - we never have to worry about Halloween trick or treaters - they don't allow the kids inside. Probably for good reason or we would be overwhelmed! Every kid in town would be here with 525 homes to go to! I do kind of miss it, though.
You're right about remembering to surrender to God - that IS the key! LOL

Leslie - hope you are catching up on all your correspondence and reading! Glad you are taking the molasses, but like Kate mentioned the broccoli, kale and spinach are great sources of iron, too.
I've always been pretty fortunate in that department. I can never remember a time that I was real anemic. My blood got slightly low, but the dr. just told me to take a multi-vitamin with iron. But then it went slighly high, so she said just take a regular vitamin and it's been fine ever since. DH takes an iron supplement - pretty inexpensive, too.

Enjoy your Saturday!!

Mema Ė glad you got the wart dealt with. Always better to be safe.

That surrendering my food to God does help if I remember to do it. LOL

Yes, my DD is overwhelmed b/c of her new responsibilities. It should calm down once she gets more people hired. Theyíre only half staffed right now. But it will take a while b/c even after they hire people it takes 2-3 months of training b/f theyíre allowed to work independently.

Leslie Ė sorry youíre missing your Coke. I had some pretty bad anemia while I was going through menopause but itís OK now. I do eat meat and also veggies with iron like broccoli, chard and spinach.

I skipped Halloween this year Ė turned out the lights so no one rang the bell. Usually we only get a dozen or so kids.

The dermatologist "froze" the small growth on my back. So it should come off in about a week or two. She thought it was a type of wart! And she also said if I didn't have it taken care of this type could turn into cancer, so I'm glad I went in. I've never heard of a wart turning into cancer before, but I'm just glad it's done.

Our pizza dinner was good. It's the buffet place we've gone to before. Then made a stop at Dollar Tree and Big Lots. DH went to Dollar Tree and I went into Big Lots. We watched the movie, "All The Money In The World" about J. Paul Getty - where his grandson was kidnapped and he wouldn't pay the ransom. But finally, after MONTHS, he did. It was a good movie, but kind of disturbing in a way. It really shows how all the money in the world does not bring happiness. He was a lonely old man. I told my DH, old man Getty at times reminded me of his dad. He kind of agreed.

Tomorrow I'm walking over to my friend's house in the morning. The one who does the Bible study. She wants to talk about our Bible study and just catch up. She and her husband just got here a few days ago from Ohio. It will be good to see her. They also go to the same church as we do.

My sister and her husband are in Destin, FL now. She emailed me and sent some pictures. They are basically on the ocean in the park where they stay. It's a beautiful spot. But it was cloudy there today.

Leslie - my aunt's DD and SIL come to TX for the winter - same as my aunt. Only this time, my aunt flew down instead of riding with them in their motor home. They are taking some extra time coming down, so that's why she'll be alone for a few days before they get here. In St. Paul, where she lives for the summer, her son and his wife just bought her house from her and so she lives with them for the summer months. So there really isn't a reason for her to go to a place like my mom's, but I know what you mean. Her kids are very good to her and take care of her. This was just a bit of a fluky thing this year.
I'm sorry you didn't get your Coke - that is disappointing they didn't call you.
I haven't been watching Netflix now since all the new fall TV shows have started. I'm watching, Dancing with the Stars, The Resident, 9-1-1, The Rookie, New Amsterdam, all the Chicago Med, Fire, PD shows, Star, Grey's Anatomy and Station 19! So that keeps me quite busy right now. I record a lot of them and then watch when I want.

Kate - Is your DD having stress at work because of the new position? Hopefully that can die down for her after awhile.
My eating when not hungry is also when I'm relaxing - like watching TV, which I usually do in the evenings. This summer I really worked my program and would "give" my hunger to God to take away. It worked, so I guess I just need to go back to doing that. During the day, I seem to keep busy enough that I don't think about food.

Hope you both have a wonderful Friday!

Kate - oops, I posted on the October chat thread...
I don't blame you for not asking your DD about your DGS getting out last night, under the circumstances! Do you get many kids at your house? We get none in our building.
I have been having a spoonful of molasses every couple of days, for the iron, and have been feeling a bit better, so I may have been anemic. I have been slightly anemic the last 2 times my blood has been checked, and I don't eat a lot of meat, so that seems like a reasonable possibility. I will indeed be discussing it with my doctor next week.

I hope you're having a great day!

Pat -

I donít know if my DGS got out for trick or treat. My DD called me on the way home from work at 7 PM. She was driving until 7:45. There was so much on her mind w/ the stress at work. And she was feeling guilty about still having the pumpkin in the back seat that she hadnít had time to carve w/ DGS. I didnít want to add to the stress by asking if they were going out.

Mema Ė yes, itís eating whenever youíre not hungry. I have issues in the afternoon rather than evening. But itís when Iím relaxing rather than busy.

Leslie Ė nice that youíve been getting to exercise class. Are you feeling less tired? You should probably still talk about it w/ your Doctor when you see her next week.
