After church, came home and just did odds and ends around the house. Starting to get things ready to put away.

Then DH and I watched a Netflix movie (instant watch) - Hold the Dark - it was a very weird, scary, dark movie and then to top it off, it had a bad ending! Like a non-finished ending. I hate when that happens. Oh, well.

Tomorrow we are in for more rain - I think just in the morning. It is good that we are getting the rain. It helps the trees if there's not a lot of snow.

Leslie - I'm happy everything seems to be better with your tooth. And with your microwave.
You must have been tired out to take a 3 hour nap and then getting to bed early. Good for you in getting the rest you need.

Kate - The windows I'm getting are the same width, but will be longer. I think mine are 36" long now and the new ones will be 44" or something like that. I like that they will be longer. We have 2 very large windows in our living room that faces the lake and then our patio door that opens onto the deck that faces the lake off the kitchen. Then the 3 season porch is windows on all 3 sides and that looks at the lake and then the woods on the side of the house. DH says when he raises the blinds, he feels like he's sitting right in the woods - it's very peaceful for him. And in TX, we have windows all across the back of the house in the living room and kitchen and then a large window in the dining room that faces the front. I have 3 windows in my bedroom down there. All of those windows are like 60" long! They go just about floor to ceiling.
Your butterfly garden sounds lovely. There are a lot of people in TX who plant plants that attract butterfly's. We have a lot of different species down there. It's also a wonderful place for bird watching - but I've never done that - as an organized outing.
Is that a long drive for you to where you'll be cruising to see the fall colors? With the recent rains here, the trees are now really starting to change. I love all the bright colors - it's just beautiful!

Have a wonderful Monday!!

Mema - Getting windows for your bedroom sounds good - it sounds like a lovely room!
Yes, my tooth extraction went very well. The tooth came out in one piece, and he didn't have to do any surgery to get it out. I do have a stitch in there though. It didn't bleed very long, and has not been painful. It feels much better than when the tooth was there!
I'm very happy with my new microwave. After all the excitement yesterday, getting the exchange made, I didn't feel like cooking last night and just had a frozen dinner (Butter Chicken) heated in the microwave. It was delicious. And I could heat my water for coffee today without having to boil it on the stove.
I'm glad you heard from your DS. Happy anniversary to them!! I'm not a fan of sushi either, but other than that, I do like Asian food.
I was so tired yesterday that I had a nap in the afternoon, which is a rare event now, but I slept almost 3 hours, so I must have needed it, and then I had to go to bed early last night - I couldn't concentrate on either reading or Netflix, so I went to bed at a little after 7 and slept until almost 5 this morning!

Kate - I love lots of windows too, but only have one each in the living room and bedroom. There is also a window in the door to the balcony so I open that every day. I loved my bedroom when I was a teenager - it was over the porch and had windows on 3 sides.
Enjoy your cruise - that sounds lovely.
There has been no pain at all following the tooth extraction.
I'm glad your cold is not turning into a major illness!
I'm glad you were able to assemble the butterfly garden.

I'm grateful to have a peaceful day today after the worrying about the microwave yesterday. I am going to make pancakes and bacon for brunch, and then try to catch up with my reading.

I hope you're both having good days!

Mema Ė will the windows be bigger or just new? I love having a lot of windows. We have at least 3 windows in every room except the bathrooms.

Being able to fix your own appliances is such a savings. It costs $70 just to have the washer dryer guy come to the house before he even does anything.

Leslie Ė Weíll be cruising on the Connecticut River starting in Northfield (straight north of Amherst on the border w/ NH and Vermont). Not as far west as Williamstown.

How is your jaw feeling after the extraction? Hope youíre not in too much pain.

Glad you were able to swap out the microwave for a smaller one so easily.

My cold seems to have responded to rest and mega doses of Vit. C. Iím still coughing a bit but not feeling sick.

During the summer I bought the sides for my raised bed butterfly garden but the weather was so hot and miserable I never put it together. Yesterday was one of those perfect sunny 70ís days so I got it all assembled.

And I started digging out the grass under it. Iím wondering if I should just put down a barrier instead of digging it out. Humm! Anyway, I change the shape so instead of a geometric shape, itís actually shaped sort of like a butterfly. Should be fun. Iíve picked out my plants and need to order the perennials to plant this fall.

Well, DH wanted to go to Superior today, so I skipped my meeting. He had a big list of things to get at Menard's. One of the things was 2 new windows for my bedroom upstairs. I have one in the front and one in the back. My bedroom is the full length of the main part of the house. It's a modified A-frame and then he built 2 "wings" off the sides. I have a set of steps that actually divides my bedroom. It was 2 separate rooms when he first built the place, but now the 2nd room (in the back) is a big closet and dressers and the front room is where my bed and vanity and computer are. Anyway, it will be nice to have new windows next year.

I'm not sure we had our "deep" freeze last night. There were no visible signs of our flowers wilting and no frost the car windows, but it was cold. When I walked out to the mailbox, the air smelled soooo good! So fresh and clean. That's what I miss in TX.

Leslie - I'm assuming everything went well with your tooth extraction. At least I hope it did.
And I'm glad you were able to get your errands done and were able to exchange your microwave. My DH can fix just about anything, but some things, like a microwave, are better off getting new because now they are so inexpensive if you're just buying a stand alone one. Ours is above our stove, so it's built in and those are a bit more $$.
I had a washer and dryer that were about 25 years old and he must have fixed those 4 or 5 times, then finally we decided we needed a new set. But it wouldn't cost him much to fix it, he could buy parts online and then do it himself.
My DS did call me last night on his way home from work. He's got about a half hour drive, so it's just about the right amount of time. He and his wife are at the Justin Timberlake concert tonight for their anniversary (which is actually on Monday, Oct. 1st). It will be 8 years for them! They went out to dinner for sushi beforehand. I'm not a fan of sushi - even the kind that's not really fish.

Kate - I'm not usually a napper and if I do nap it's for about 20 minutes. But that day I think I slept for 2 hours!! That's very unusual for me, so I must have been tired. I have a CPAP machine and so when I do sleep, I get good rest, so I don't usually have to nap even if I don't get a lot of sleep.
I can imagine being by the ocean that your winters are nasty. I do remember seeing on TV last year how the water was crashing into those houses by the ocean and were as high as their rooftops and then all mixed with snow besides!
I was telling DH today, that I think my blood has really thinned out because we haven't been in cold for the last 3 years and I was bundled up today like it was below zero!! And it was just in the 40's! LOL

Hope you have a good Sunday!

Sorry for my absence this week. I've been busy, getting my tooth pulled Thursday, and yesterday I was out with my friend Diane, doing all my errands. I got a microwave yesterday, but made a big mistake - there were piles of microwaves in boxes, and the one I grabbed was MUCH too big! It took up all my counter space to the left of my sink. Thankfully, the delivery service was willing to take it back for me today and get a smaller one. I'm very happy to have a microwave again. The new, smaller one, was less expensive, so I actually got a refund!

I also got a long mirror to hang over a door, and ordered a new globe. The price of the globe (over $100) really shocked me! I stocked up on a few other things too.

Mema - I'm glad your FIL got home safely.
I missed the hearings yesterday because I was out most of the day.
Good for you, leaving the casino wth $10!
Have you talked with your DS? I hope to talk to mine today or tomorrow.

Kate - I also have to do all my errands on the day my friend takes me out, and sometimes it's quite exhausting.
I also remember repairing everything, but don't know if there are people who repair microwaves, or if it would even be worth it after all the years it's been used.
How are you now? I'm sorry you thought you were getting a cold.
Your river expedition sounds wonderful!! Will that be in the Berkshires? I used to live in Williamstown - where they had the best pizza ever!!
Your cold and damp winters are like those around the Great Lakes, where I've lived much of my life.

I hope you're having a good Saturday!

Mema Ė weíre actually a fair bit south of you and the ocean has a tempering affect. You are in zone 4 for gardening and Iím in zone 6. Weíll have our first frosts around mid October but the ground wonít be frozen until the new year.

What makes Boston winters so brutal is that ocean air Ė not just cold, itís cold and damp. Itís not unusual to have snow and sleet and freezing rain all mixed together in a storm. It just pierces to the bone.

Glad you could take a nap. Iíve not slept well the last two nights but Iím not a napper.

My meeting this morning is canceled b/c the church where we meet has a big church fair today.

I had a terrible time sleeping last night. Was still up at 2 am, then woke up at 5 am and stayed up. I did take a nap about 10:30. Then I did laundry today. We are under a hard freeze warning tonight. It's going down to 27 tonight, but will be below freezing from about 1 am until morning.

Tomorrow is my meeting and chores around the house.

Kate - I'm glad the rest and Vit C seem to be doing the trick.
We're starting to see the leaves change up here now. When I drive to my meetings, I drive all 2 lane roads that are lined with Maple, Birch, Poplar, and so they are now starting to show their colors. Your drive and boat ride sounds very nice.
I don't think we could ever do any gardening up to Thanksgiving - our ground is pretty frozen by then! It's fun to see the difference between your weather and mine. I guess I always thought the Boston area was about the same as us, but you must stay warmer for a bit longer than we do. I know you're winters can be brutal.

Leslie - hope all is well!

I'm waiting on a phone call from my DS. Haven't talked with him in several days, so just need to catch up!

Enjoy your Saturday!!

The extra rest and Vit C seems to be helping keep the bug at bay. Iím still coughing but it hasnít gotten worse. I started digging out grass yesterday for my butterfly garden. I only worked for about an hour but it felt good to be out in the sunshine. I figure if I keep at it I should get the grass all dug out and the forms set up for the raised beds in a week or two and then Iíll get some topsoil delivered to fill them. The perennials can go in before Thanksgiving.

I haven't gone leaf peeping for a long time. I used to get a wonderful view of the foliage while driving to work. This year, I decided we should go but it occurred to me that a river trip would be a nice way to see the foliage w/o someone having to concentrate on driving. I booked a short trip down a river valley in early October. DH will take the day off and we'll have a nice drive out to the western part of the state and the short boat ride and a nice drive back.

I ended up watching the Ford/Kavanaugh hearings most all day long. Although we left in the afternoon to run an errand and then go to the buffet at the casino. I played with $10 for an hour and a half and left with $10! So not bad.

Now I'm going to watch all of the Kavanaugh side of the hearings.

Kate - I'm sorry you are catching a bug. Vit. C and rest will do you good! I know for me rest really helps.
I hope you're able to get your root canal on Monday.

Leslie - Hi!

Enjoy your Friday ladies!

I really do think Iím catching something. Coughing and sniffling, achy and tired. Iíve been loading up on extra Vit C and taking it easy. I really donít want it to stick. I have the second root canal scheduled for Monday.

I skipped my meeting yesterday and Iíll probably stay home from the gym this morning.

Mema Ė glad your FIL is safely home and has someone to check in on him until you move back down there.

Leslie - are you having cool weather now?

Hope your errands tomorrow go smoothly and that you're able to find a nice, inexpensive microwave.

At my meeting today I saw a gal I hadn't seen all summer so it was nice to connect with her. Tomorrow we're going to eat at the casino (the buffet this time). DH has a punch card and only needs one more punch to get one free. That way he'll use up the card before we go to TX. So I won't have to cook tomorrow. emoticon

Kate - I guess I have the best of both worlds in a way. Out in the country up here, but right in the city in TX. Although I'm not close enough to walk to any of the stores, but they are w/in a mile or two.
That must be nice to here the town clock - sounds very charming and quaint.
Did you catch a bug? Good idea to rest up. I sometimes catch a cold when we go to TX or come back from TX. I think it's the drastic change in weather or something.

Leslie - Hope all is well and you are catching up with your reading. All the fall TV shows are starting this week, so now I probably won't be watching too much on Netflix. I started watching Crossing Lines - that's a pretty good show. I'll have to see if I can get in more shows between TV shows!

We got a call from my FIL - he got home safe and sound so that was good. My DH's cousin and wife are flying to TX tomorrow and so they will be able to visit my FIL off and on until we get down there. They live in the same community as we do in TX.

It's Thankful Thursday tomorrow - lots to be thankful for!

Mema Ė yes, I have other friends who live in rural type areas and have to lump all their errands into one shopping day b/c of the travel. I love living in an area where I can walk to much of what I need. One of my friends says her dream home is away in the woods where she canít see her neighbors and I always shake my head. I like having neighbors to chat with over the fence. And I love being able to hear the clock in town center chiming the hours in the summer when all the windows are open.

Leslie Ė too bad about the microwave, but Iím glad it happened on a week when you could easily get a replacement. Funny how we think of those small appliances as things to toss and replace. I remember my Dad doing a lot of repair to small appliances at home.

Weíre getting that warm and humid weather today. The forecast says it could reach 80. But tomorrow it will be back in the mid 60ís.

I was feeling "off" yesterday and by evening I was really feeling yucky and my nose was running. I think I've caught some bug. I plan to do a lot of resting this week and hope the bug leaves rather than setting up housekeeping in my sinuses.

I'm pondering skipping my meeting this morning. On the last week of the month, they don't have a speaker, it's just sharing. IDK. I'll see how I feel once I'm out of bed and moving around.

I didn't do a lot today - kind of rested. Busy few days and I was a bit tired out. And we had rain here most of the day and it was chilly, so it was a good day to stay in. Tomorrow I've got my meeting. It's going down to 39 tonight!

Leslie - you're right about falls. He doesn't see well anyway because of the glaucoma and macular degeneration and he did take a fall a few weeks ago and really scraped his arm up. If that happens again, we'll have to seriously think about moving him over to the main building into assisted living.
Sorry to hear about your microwave, but at least they're not too expensive now days.

Kate - I do wear shoes in TX all the time and that wasn't helping my heel last year. I never go barefoot and rarely even walk around in socks. But maybe not spending as many months down there will help, too.
It seems funny when you say 9 miles is too far to go when there are so many other stores. I'm so used to going 60 miles for just about everything, but then everything is in that town.

DH and I watched Only The Brave on Netflix DVD. It was about the Arizona Hotshots - firefighters. Based on a true story. It was very good, but now it's late so I'd better get to bed.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Mema - I'm glad you survived your FIL's visit so well, and he's moved on now. I guess at his age, it doesn't matter much if he wants to drink, but I'd worry about falls.
It's very warm and humid here today. Tomorrow it will be rainy and much cooler.
I do suppose they'll be banning the plastic bags here too. I guess then I'd have to buy trash bags.
I'm glad your heel isn't bothering you. I hope you'll be able to do the walking you want.
Mail strikes are awful. There just isn't any mail for as long as it lasts. It's hard to say how long it would be. It's a good thing I pay all my bills online now.

Kate - I love ratatouille. I even like it cold, with a bit of lemon juice on it. I had it warm last night.
My microwave died this morning. I had to boil water for my coffee, and eat my muffin cold, but tomorrow I'll know about it, and will heat the muffin in the oven. My housekeeper is here today and took the old microwave downstairs for me to get rid of it. My friend will be taking me out on Friday to do errands, so I'll get another microwave at Walmart then. If this had to happen, this is a good week for it!

I hope you're both having good days.

Mema Ė glad you got through the FIL visit in such a pleasant way even if it did get a bit redundant. I find conversations w/ some older folks do get that way. I expect Iíll do the same thing in 20 years.

I guess the drinking wonít make that much difference to your FIL unless he ends up in the hospital and they have to dry him out before they treat him.

My mom found that she had to wear shoes all the time when she moved to a house w/ tile floors. Her heels never bothered her when she was living w/ nice springy wood frame floors.

There are just a few Aldi stores around here Ė the closest one about 9 miles in toward Boston. Since there are at least a dozen closer grocery stores (not including Target and Walmart), itís not worth going that far.

Leslie - It's crispy weather here this morning but it's going to rain all day. Tomorrow we're supposed to get all the way up into the high seventies before it gets back down to typical mid 60's for the month.

I know my friends in western Canada were complaining about the early snow fall in the first part of September.

I use the plastic bags for my bathroom trash cans and for picking up when I walk the dogs. I expect the trend to banning them will continue. There are over 80 towns in the state that have banned them.

Ratatouille is good warmed up and as left overs. I often make mine early in the day and then eat it at dinner.

So we handed off my FIL to my BIL today, shortly after lunch. My FIL didn't get up until after 10 am! He said he slept really well the last 2 nights in my DH's bed. Better than he did at his daughter's house the previous nights. So it all went well, but I would not have wanted him another night. The conversations were starting to get redundant.

Plus, he drank about 16 ounces of vodka in the 2 nights he was here!! He drinks every day at 5:00. But now he's into saying "he's babying himself" so that's his excuse for drinking more. I guess at 91 it may not make a whole lot of difference anymore, but his other son drinks WAY more than that every night. And being in AA, it bothers me. Not that I want some, I'm past that. I just know what it can do and I see it in DH's brother.

It was a bit warmer here today - I think it got up to 72 maybe, but it was quite breezy. The sun was shining most of the day, so that made it feel warmer. We're in for rain tonight.

Leslie - The city of Brownsville, TX also banned plastic bags several years ago. That is the only city/town in the Rio Grande Valley that did that. Not sure why, but after awhile most of the stores still carried the plastic bags and you could buy as many as you needed for your items for a buck! So people were buying them. That made no sense to me, if you're going to ban them, then ban them! My mom also used them for the small trash cans around the house and I do too. If I had to mail her anything, I would pack the plastic bags all around the items so she would have a new batch! I've gotten to the point where I'll take in 2-3 Walmart bags full of Walmart bags so they can be recycled. LOL We end up with way more than we need.
I think I'll be able to go back to walking once we get back to TX. My heel isn't bothering me anymore. I hope I can. But I'll have to see if it flares up, then I'll know it's because of the tile floors (over a cement slab). We only have carpeting in the 2 bedrooms, den and dining room. I hope I can because I love walking down there!
I'm not sure when it was, maybe a couple of weeks ago, but I saw way up in Northern Canada, "blue" precipitation which meant snow! When we have left in Oct. years ago, we would see snow at least once before we left! I loved it. One year I video taped on my camera the snow coming down and the wind with it. I would occasionally watch it when I was in TX when it was 95 degrees! LOL
I hope you don't have to go thru a mail strike. That would be a pain. Does it last long? How do you get your mail?

Kate - I carry the fabric bags in my trunk, too. But it's for when I shop at Aldi's. Do you have them out East? It is a smaller grocery store and they carry their own brands and most of the time, they can beat Walmart's prices. They just don't have the variety. And you put a quarter into a slot on their grocery carts and when you return the carts, you get your quarter back. That way they don't have grocery carts all over the parking lot and they don't have to hire a person for that job. It's actually quite a good idea. In TX, people leave their carts all over the place and on a windy day, they are rolling all over the place, crashing into people's cars!

I sometimes wake up about 5:30 or 6:00 - go to the bathroom, maybe check my phone, but usually go back to sleep!
When we have had our heat on, it's been either at night, or just first thing in the morning to take off the chill. But I've been wearing sweatshirts around the house.

Have a great Monday!

Mema - I'm glad yesterday was also a good day with your FIL visiting. I can understand his not liking the changes the new owners have made.
That cake sounds very nice!
I hope today also goes well so that you will have had a good time with your FIL there.
We will be having a couple of pretty warm days, today (70) and tomorrow when it will feel like 80+ with the humidex! It will be getting cooler after that. At least I'm not in the prairie provinces where they've already been getting snow!

Kate - I also slept in today - instead of getting up by 5, it was almost 6 when I woke up. I was suddenly overcome with exhaustion yesterday. I have no idea why, but I suddenly did not have the energy to cook the dinner I had planned, and I went to bed early too, so I got lots of sleep, but still feel tired today. I will make the ratatouille soon, before I find I can't do it today either!
Now my shopping comes to $30-40/bag, but they are fairly large plastic bags. I hope they won't ban them here - I use them for garbage bags. I do use my tote bags when I'm out doing errands, but when I order groceries, they come in the plastic bags. The pharmacy sends things in paper bags.
When I had my cat, I used the plastic bags when I cleaned the litter box. I gave a bagful of bags to my neighbour who has 3 cats.

Because I slept later this morning, I missed our exercise class. In fact, I'm not even dressed yet, and may not bother with that today!
We may be having a mail strike beginning on Wednesday. We seem to have those every few years - they are a pain!

I hope you both have very good days!

Mema Ė we slept in a bit today, too. Although for us that means 6 instead of 5:30. LOL

Iím glad things are working out well w/ your FILís visit. Hope it ends on a good note today.
Nice that your FIL could see his old cabin. I can understand why he was upset w/ the changes. It is hard to give up ownership of something. I remember when we visited my grandparentsí old house and the big veggie garden in the back yard was gone.

Leslie Ė yes, I remember those $20 shopping bills. And I remember the days when I figured it was about $10 per bag. So if I spent more than $20 it was going to be more than 2 bags to carry. That was when we used the big paper bags. Now it can be $10 for one of the little plastic bags. LOL.

And now our town has banned the plastic bags so you have to bring your own bags or you get medium sized paper bags without handles and theyíre very thin and tear if you try to pick them up by the top. Iíve moved all my fabric shopping bags to the car so Iíll always have them with me.

Our weather sounds like yours but a bit warmer. We were down in the 40ís last night and it will be in the 60ís during the days (except for one warmer day this week in the 70s). I havenít turned the heat on yet but Iíve been wearing a sweater or vest in the house.

Another good day. My FIL got to see and visit with quite a few old friends from church this morning and there was a beautiful cake, yellow roses (for the Yellow Rose of TX) and a picture of my MIL with a short bio that my DH wrote.

Then he and DH went over to see his old cabin and visited with them for quite awhile. They made some dramatic changes that my FIL was not thrilled about, but I kept telling him it was their house now, so that is what THEY like. He would agree, but then kept on saying how it wasn't what he would have done! LOL

Tomorrow my DH's brother will come and pick him up at 1:30. Things have gone well, so I'm very grateful for that.

Leslie - this coming week we will only be in the 50's for highs and actually they are predicting a freeze or frost warning for the end of the week!
You do have your heat available now, don't you? We've had our furnace on a couple of nights. We have a large propane tank in our back yard, kind of tucked into the woods with a lattice fence in front of it - that's how we heat our place.

Kate - I can certainly see how you would be sweaty at the end of your class. I would be as well.

Tomorrow we don't have to get up for anything special, so I'm sure we'll all sleep in a bit. It's been a busy couple of days for all of us.

Have a great day!

Mema - I'm so glad the memorial service went well. The slide presentation sounds like a lovely idea.
How nice that the memories will continue today with the cake. I'm glad your FIL will be able to see his former place too. I'm not surprised he's getting tired out. That is a lot of activity! And a lot of different beds he'll be sleeping in!
I'm glad that he and your DH have been getting along all right.
That was a lot of groceries I got, but I only order every 2-3 weeks, and I stocked up on things I don't get every time.
It's been chilly at night here too, about 40, but it is in the 60s during the day, and is supposed to be a little warmer tomorrow.
Yes, my friend is and always has been a very responsible person. She still does some teaching because she loves it.

Kate - I remember shopping with my dad when I was in high school, and for a family of 6, the bill was about $20, but that also did not include meat, which my mother bought from a butcher. We would shop every Saturday, and then pick up the meat which my mother ordered by phone.
Thanks for the reminder to stand on one foot while doing simple chores.
That spin class sounds like a LOT of work!! I'm glad you like it though.

I hope you both have very good days.

Leslie Ė nice to see your post. Hope the tooth extraction goes smoothly.

Thatís a big grocery bill. Glad youíll be all stocked up for a while. Somehow the money just doesnít go as far as it used to when you buy groceries.

You can always practice your balance by just doing simple things like standing on one foot while you brush your teeth and things like that.

Mema Ė that sounds like a very nice memorial and your DHís family obviously did a lot of preparations for it. Hope things continue to go smoothly between your DH and his dad.

Yes, Spin class is where you ride stationary bikes. The instructor has music and directs the ride. Weíll do things like fast intervals w/ short breaks and then switch to a ďhill climbĒ where you add a lot of resistance. Some of the time we stand in the pedals and thatís really strenuous. Iím always very sweaty at the end of a ride.

Well, the memorial service went MUCH better than I was anticipating. DH's daughter did just a wonderful job. She read the long version of the obituary and then there was a slide presentation from when my MIL was a baby until very old. DH's sister put that together to music. After that, DH's daughter talked about what memories she had of her grandmother and it was touching. As a matter of fact (she's an engineer and does quite a bit of public speaking, so this was not new to her to get up and talk); however she got very emotional (but held it together) as she was talking. It was actually nice to see. Then DH's nephew (who is studying to be an anesthesiologist in TN) and a very nice young Christian man gave a prayer at the end. We had all eaten before hand so then after all the speaking, slide show, etc. there was much more time for visiting. I think we left with my FIL at 3:45 pm. So long day, but we'll all still be able to get a good night's rest for tomorrow.

After tomorrow's church service, during fellowship time, we'll have a cake "In Memory of....." and the pastor will give a brief talk. Then FIL will visit with his neighbors who he sold his cabin to. He used to have a place up here as well. But about 6 years ago they decided to move permanently to TX so he sold his place as well as quite a bit of property he had. So he's going to go over for a brief visit and see "his" old place.

Then he'll stay with us tomorrow night and on Monday DH's brother will come and pick him up and stay with him until Wednesday when he flies back to TX. He has thoroughly enjoyed himself so far, but he's getting tired out. He's 91 years old, so this is an awful lot to do. Especially 2 nights here, 2 nights at his daughter's house, 3 nights at his other son's house. That's a lot of beds to sleep in!

And DH said to me that so far his dad hadn't said anything to make him mad, so that was good! His dad tends to be very envious and resentful of what DH has done in his life and with his kids. His dad was very successful (he worked for Honeywell Corp), but he traveled most of the time. He would leave on a Sunday evening and usually not return until Friday night! He had a territory of MN, ND, SD, and Montana selling commercial thermostats to companies. He was transferred quite a bit, too. So he never really got to know his kids, but really didn't bother to try to get to know them. DH's father is very narcissistic. And my DH is the oldest and his dad expected him to do much more than a child should have to all thru his adolescent years. But so far things have been fine. Fingers crossed!

Leslie - I'm glad to hear your dental appt. went well. I hope when it comes time to pull the tooth that goes smoothly, too.
Wow, that is a lot of groceries for one person! But at least you are well stocked now. But isn't that something, all that money and no meat!
When we left this morning it was 37 degrees here! Brrrrrr....that was chilly, but we had sunshine the whole day and it did warm up to about 70.
Your best friend sounds like she ended up with a very successful career and must be a pretty responsible woman. Unfortunately, I wasn't very responsible - but I found my DH and he has helped me a lot with that, along with AA.

Kate - sounds like you have a schedule all figured out for yourself with your yoga and spin class. That spin class, is that where you ride stationary bikes? Only really fast? That must take a lot of stamina! Good for you! I'm hoping to get back to more of a schedule when we return to TX. I have been doing well as far as eating and lost some weight, but haven't gotten into a "regular" exercise routine.
I will be looking forward to getting back to Bible study once we get back to TX. We will probably get started in November. The leader emailed and said they are going back Oct. 20th. And usually by November, everyone is back in TX.
We do have a Bible study before church service on Sundays that the Pastor goes through all the readings - sounds similar to yours. We don't attend because that is too early for DH. Mornings are tough for him. He is very stiff and sore every morning so it takes him a long while to "loosen up". But we will go to the Bible study down in TX that they have AFTER church service. That works out better.

Oh, well I'd better get to bed myself. I'm a bit tired out now. And tomorrow will be a long day, too. I have to go thru all the cards my FIL got and read them to him. He has glaucoma and macular degeneration, so his eyesight is not very good.

Blessings to you on Sunday!

Here I am, apologizing again. The days just seem to be going by too quickly.
My dental appointment went well. He prescribed antibiotics for a week, and will pull the tooth next Thursday. That may be a bit tricky since one side of the tooth is broken at the gum line. I'll just be glad to get rid of it.
Yesterday I ordered a very large quantity of groceries (over $180 with no meat!), so I've been planning menus in order to use up the most perishable foods first. I will have pasta with meat sauce and mushrooms tonight, and a big salad, and ratatouille tomorrow - I hope I'll find room in the fridge for the leftovers! I will enjoy the leftovers next week!
We had wicked winds yesterday afternoon and last night, and it's MUCH cooler today!

Kate - I also did a lot of babysitting from about age 10 until the end of high school. I stayed for part of a summer with 2 young kids in a cabin behind their grandparents' place.
I'm glad you got your car back sooner than expected.
The Thai restaurant you go to sounds wonderful. I love Asian food, with the exception of sushi.
I'm glad the puppy was doing well following her surgery.
You had a busy day yesterday with your DGS and 3 dogs!!
I'm happy you liked the new yoga class. Working on balance is so important - keep it up! I was doing well with that in my 60s, but when my DVD player stopped working, I stopped using my exercise DVDs, and now my balance is awful. We do work on balance in our exercise classes, but I should be doing more exercises on my own too.

Mema - Your adolescence sounds a lot like my best friend's. She didn't have to work at all either, and had pretty free rein with her mum's credit card for buying clothes, toiletries, etc. Her husband died when he was quite young, in his 40s I think, and although she had gone through nursing school after high school, she had no desire to be a nurse, and her artistic talents popped out. She earned a good living doing calligraphy, and teaching it. She did a lot of work for the government of Canada, writing out the proclamation of Canada's newest territory, Nunavut, and certificates for those who earned the Order of Canada, and for visiting heads of state. I have really admired her work!! Sorry for going on and on. I am thinking of her this morning because there was a tornado very close to her in Ottawa - she and her family are OK.
I do very little at Spark People. I used to track food and exercise, and be in more teams, but now I just get my log in points, bonus points and a few other points here and there... And I post here when I can.
I hope the memorial service for your MIL goes well today. I guess you've gone to it already. How long will your FIL be with you? I hope that goes well too, and that he and your DH will get along well together.

I hope you're both having good days.

Mema Ė the new yoga class was good. This instructor had us hold the poses for longer and she did more balance work Ė standing on one foot Ė which I really need to work on. I think those 2 classes, Tuesday and Thursday, will be my new plan for the fall along w/ spin class on Fridays.

I hope the service for your MIL goes well. Good your DH is working through some of the issues w/his dad. I hope the visit goes well. Will FIL stay for long or head back to Texas soon?

Leslie Ė hope you weather the storms in your area and that you are able to stay home through them.

The Bible study I'm part of took a break for July and August. It's starting up again today so I'll be glad to be back in the group. We study the same passages that are used for the sermons.
We're doing Mark this fall.

I apologize for not posting last night. I was just tired out. Not really from doing too much, just tired.
So tomorrow is the memorial service for my MIL. We will leave here about 7:45 am. I guess there are family pictures before hand. This service is not going to be like my mom's. I don't even think there is going to be a service as such. From all the emails from my SIL (DH's sister who is in charge of all of this) there is no indication of a service. We are eating right away at noon, then DH's daughter is going to be like an "MC" for 1/2 hour along with a slide show, then there will be visiting afterwards. That's it!! And my MIL was very religious. She was brought up Missouri Synod Lutheran with her 11 brothers and sisters, so I'm not sure what they will think. I will let you know.

Then we will be bringing back my FIL. I hope this all goes well. DH has been processing a lot of information about his dad and I think he's figuring things out so he's not so angry, anxious or upset about him coming here. He's not thrilled, but it's the right thing to do.

Kate - did you try a new yoga class? How did it go?
I'm glad things went good with the puppy. I always feel so bad when dogs have to wear those cones, but I know it's for their own good. They always seem to look so sad, maybe that's it.
How did everything go with your "full house" of DGS and dogs

Well, I'd better get to thinking about getting to bed. It will be an early morning and a long day! It will be chilly in the morning. Our forecast is for 39 tonight!! But it will be sunny most of the day tomorrow and about 70 so it should be a beautiful fall day.

Leslie - hope you are having a good day.

DD asked me to pick up DGS from school today and keep him overnight. And DS asked to drop off all 3 dogs here today. He has his bartending job tonight and timing was too tight to pick up dogs in 2 locations between day job and night job. So it should be a full house again this afternoon.

Leslie Ė hope the dentist was able to fix the tooth. Iíve been dealing w/ 2 bad teeth for the last 2 months and itís not fun at all.

Mema Ė yesterday was cool and cloudy here, too, although they predicted partly sunny. I walked to my meeting and another appointment in town and carried my umbrella but it didnít actually rain. Today is forecast for the same type of weather.

The puppy was very good yesterday. She got a bit restless the hour before her dinner time and had to be stopped from licking her sutures. DH was watching her for a while when I had a follow-up on my gum surgery and he put her cone on. After she ate and had her medication, she settled down and napped until DS came to get her. Itís peaceful having just the one dog here this week.

I think Iím going to try a different yoga class today. Iím liking the Tuesday class. The Thursday class has a different instructor. Iíll do my weight lifting before the class if I get there in time.

Leslie - I hope you were able to get your tooth taken care of and no more pain. I don't think there's anything worse than a toothache. I hope it all went well.
I just love books that I have a hard time putting down. I haven't read one like that, tho' in a long time.

Kate - I thought we were supposed to get rain during the day today, but it held off until just after supper. I was certain I would be leaving my meeting today and running out to my car, but that didn't happen. Tomorrow when DH and I go shopping it's supposed to be an all day rain. Sigh!

It was cool and cloudy, but not cold. I actually liked it. DH turned on the furnace for a bit this morning. He always jokes it's for me, but he's the one who wants it on. LOL

I made comfort food for supper tonight - scalloped potatoes and pork chops - it was good!

I hope you both have a great Thursday!!

Once again I apologize for my absence. Monday was a busy day, and yesterday I was reading a great book and just couldn't put it down.
Last night my tooth that has been broken for a long time, started really aching badly. I had to take an extra pain pill, and had a hard time getting to sleep. I've called for an appointment this morning, and the mobility bus will be picking me up soon. It is very sore again today!

Sorry I don't have time to respond to you individually today - I will try to catch up tomorrow.
I hope you're both having good days!

Leslie - busy trying to catch up on your "New Yorker" magazine?

Mema Ė we got some heavy downpours but only 1-2 inches total. My MIL in Charlotte got 10 inches. She said all the churches were closed on Sunday.

My friend and I always go to the same place Ė a Thai restaurant within walking distance. They always do really good food although their lunch menu is limited. We usually do a Bible study together as well, but it's been so busy this summer, we've just been doing lunch.

Money was really tight in my family when I was growing up. My mom was incredibly frugal and always made ends meet but there wasnít much left over for extras. We could only afford one car so when my mom needed it to go shopping, my dad rode a scooter to work.

About SP Ė I post here and Iím administrator of another team. That team formed from a bunch of us who used to be on eDiets teams. When eDiets closed their community and switched to just being a food delivery company, we were left w/o a place to post and moved here. I donít track my food or exercise any more, but I do have a list of ďother goalsĒ that I track. I occasionally read an article if an interesting one comes up on the start page Ė but so many of them are old ones Iíve already seen. I do go over to the points page and use the Ďbonus spinsí for the teams Iím on.

This is my DSís puppy. Her name is Daisy and she has to wear her cone while her sutures heal from being spayed on Monday. She only tried to lick the incision once yesterday and I distracted her w/ a bone to chew. I put the cone on her when I have to go out and canít keep an eye on her. (or an ear out for the sound of licking)

Kate - glad to hear you got your car back sooner than expected. Nice surprise for you!
Did you get the rain from Florence?
How was your lunch with your GF? Go to anyplace special?

I was a pretty spoiled kid growing up. I think my mom tried to compensate for the fact that my dad was an alcoholic. He was not a mean drunk or anything like that, just spent a lot of money at the local beer joint so she spent a lot of money on us kids. So I never had to earn my own money. She bought me clothes for school (and we didn't have uniforms, but had to wear decent clothes - no jeans) and if I needed money to go out with friends, she gave it to me. I went to a private Christian high school which was across town and so when I turned 16 right before my Junior year in high school they bought me a car so I could drive myself. I was involved in a lot of after school activities and my mom would always have to pick me up. Usually 3-5 days a week. They paid for the insurance and any gas. My mom started working when she was 14 years old and never really liked it, so she would always tell me, "you'll have to work the rest of your life, so you don't need to now" And as a young teenager, I thought that was great! Especially since I got pretty much whatever I needed and/or wanted. But looking back I know that was not good for me at all. My expectations of others began to get real high. And I never really learned responsibility.

Today I did some more cleaning - vacuuming furniture, cleaning some windows, etc. Tomorrow is my meeting and on Thursday DH and I are going to Rice Lake so he can get his haircut. I need to get a few groceries for when his dad is here. It was cloudy and cool today and earlier I saw someone out on the lake in their pontoon!! I think it would have been quite chilly out there. I don't know if they were fishing or what. They were going slow like they were just out for a ride.

Question for both of you - how much do you "do" on Spark People? Do you track your food and/or exercise? Do you read articles or other things to get points? I'm just curious. I used to do much more, but lately I've just been tracking my food (which really does help) and tracking any exercise that I can. And then I just post on this thread.

Leslie - how's everything?

Happy Wednesday!

The auto body shop had estimated that my car would be done Thursday or Friday, but they called late in the afternoon yesterday to say it was done. Hooray for getting my wheels back! 10 days was long enough to drive the rental car.

Mema Ė glad youíre getting some much needed rain. Hope you can meet up w/ your friends before you head south.

We're expecting rain and thunderstorms all day today from the remnants of Florence. I have lunch plans w/ my GF and then a haircut scheduled. Normally, I'd walk but I'm thinking about taking my car today.

Baby sitting was my way of earning money as a teen. I sat pretty regularly until I left for college. That last summer at home I was a full time Ďmotherís helpí for a mom who worked full time and needed someone to watch the kids during the summer.

36.5 pounds gone, 17.5 more pounds is my 2020 goal.

Well, it cooled off nicely here! And we got some rain in the afternoon after I put down more fertilizer so that worked out.
I never did do any babysitting when I was young. My sister didn't either (except to watch me occasionally). I guess there just weren't young kids around. Most of them were my age.

Kate - I'm so glad to hear about your pastor - delivery is not near as important if the message itself is good.
We're in for more rain this week and over the next several days (off and on). But that's good, we need it now.
Hope you have a nice lunch with your friend. I'm trying to get in a lunch with some friends from TX that are up near Duluth. They won't be coming to TX this winter (her husband is having some memory issues) so I would like to see them before we head south. I do have to go up there (to Duluth) sometime before we leave to close out my mom's checking account. All the bills have been paid now and one of the branches of banks my sister banks at is up there, so I will just deposit her half of the money at that time. I don't want to mail a large check.

Leslie - hope you got in some good reading time today!

Enjoy your Tuesday!

Leslie Ė my cell phone lives in my purse, too, but I had walked to my morning meeting and decided not to carry the whole purse. I just put my 12&12 book, my wallet and my phone into a smaller bag. The original plan was that DH would drive DGS and I didnít think to switch back to my regular purse.

I babysat next door starting at about 10 or 11, too. It was nice knowing my mom was next door if there was ever an emergency - but there wasn't.

The church voted to call the new pastor so heíll start Oct. 1st. It will be nice. This is the first time Iíll have a pastor who is younger than me. All the other ones have been in their 50ís and 60ís. This new guy is in his 30ís Ė not much older than my kids. I guess Iím now a member of the ďold guardĒ.

Mema Ė the new pastor has been a youth pastor. My DH said he doesnít have much preaching experience so his delivery is not polished but he has lots of good content. From hearing him just once yesterday, Iíd say thatís a fair assessment. And his love for God came through very clearly.

Today DSís puppy is getting spayed so Iíll just have the two big dogs. Tomorrow, he said he will put them in the doggie day care and just bring the pup here so she can have a quiet relaxing day w/o her big brothers.

I have a meeting this morning but I'll be home the rest of the day. I think I'll try to get the dogs out to the park around lunch.

The weather forecast says we'll be getting the rains from Florence starting late tonight and all day tomorrow into Wednesday morning. There are flash flood warnings up. Tomorrow would be good day to stay home I think and cuddle w/ the puppy! But I have lunch w/ a friend and then a haircut scheduled. Oh well, at least both things are close to home.

I did get some cleaning done today and washed some windows, too! Tomorrow DH wants me to put more fertilizer on the yard. I did it once about a month ago. Gets me walking!

Leslie - did you get in lots of reading today?
I'm ready for our cool down - tomorrow's high - 71 and then 60's for the next week or better!
I still have my cell phone with me just about all day long. I got so used to having it with me every second in case I got a call about my mom, it's hard to break that habit. And if I have left it on the table or someplace, I almost panic for a second when I realize it's not in my pocket! I'm sure that will ease up as more time passes.

Kate - I'm glad you have a new pastor. I hope he's a good fit for your congregation. It can be a little nerve racking at first. I know it was for us - not sure if he'll fit in with us or if he'll like our congregation, etc. We did have a bad pastor at our church here in WI. So bad my DH and I were very close to changing churches as well as several other people! But our church is small and we know everyone so we hung in there and at least for 6 months we were gone! His sermons had no content to them whatsoever and each week I would really concentrate on trying to get something out of them and it just didn't work. It was not a good experience at all.
Fall is also my favorite season!
My DH has a thing about having a lot of food in the house. Here in WI and in TX I always have to give him a "heads up" about when to stop buying meat! And he'll still try to get more in the house. And it's not like he was poor or anything like that growing up, so I'm not sure what it's all about! LOL
We haven't had any fog here in the mornings - or at least not that I know of - maybe I'm up too late! Ha!

Enjoy your Monday!!

Mema - I'm sure my parents had no idea when they went out, of the severity of the coming storm. I started babysitting at 10, at home, and for the people next door who had 2 little boys. The first time I went next door, my mum said that if I had to call her for help, she wouldn't let me babysit there again until I was older. However, the woman next door told me to make mashed potatoes for the 1-year old's lunch, and I had no clue how to do that, so I did call my mum, and was able to successfully mash a potato! I did continue to babysit there.
We are also having a muggy day - Tuesday will be our cool down.
I'm glad you can enjoy so much of the fall in WI, and that you have all that food to last you for all that time! It's great that you can take stuff to your DS's house so you'll have less to pack.

Kate - We have also been having dense fogs in the mornings. It's still hot enough that I need the fan on. That's fine with me!
Hurricanes are a very rare event in Toronto, but a few days ago there was heavy rain from Gordon. Hazel was truly terrifying. A lot of people drowned in Toronto.
I'm glad you had your cell phone when you got to your DD's. Mine resides in my purse, so it's always with me when I'm out.
I'm glad you apparently have a new pastor!

This will be a quiet day for me, with lots of reading I hope.

Have a great day!

Mema Ė nice to be able to enjoy the fall weather. Thatís my favorite time of year.

LOL about having that much food stashed away in the freezer. Over 6 weeksí worth! I just ordered a small stand alone freezer to help me manage my food. I get my meat from the co-op once a month and all summer long I have extra veggies that I could freeze and store if I had room for them. I usually just pass on extra veggies to my DD. This year I have that bumper crop of Roma tomatoes and no room for them.

Weíre having a lot of humidity but itís not too hot Ė only up to about 80. There have been really dense fogs in the early mornings b/c itís been cool overnight.

Leslie Ė I didnít realize that hurricanes came as far as Toronto. I can imagine it was terrifying being there w/ only your younger brothers.

DGS opted to eat out since he wouldnít have any computer time. I drove him home right after we ate. I switched bags in the morning and didnít put all my stuff into the bag I was using. I had forgotten to bring DDís house keys so we were stuck outside her apartment. She was taking a nap and it took 3 phone calls to wake her. Iím just glad I had my cell phone. I donít always carry it.

Our church has had an interim pastor for the past 2 years. My DH has been on the committee to find a new permanent pastor and they finally have one! Heís been here all week, meeting various groups from the church and this morning heíll preach in the service. There will be a meeting to vote afterwards. Whew! That means Iíll finally get a bit more time and attention from DH. This whole process has been taking up hours of his time every week.

Leslie - It was another hot and humid day today. One more to go and then we'll get our cool down.
We don't have to leave for TX until the end of October, so maybe the last week. Depending on how cold it gets. It will be nice to be here for the whole fall season! Last year (and the previous 2 years) we left shortly after Labor Day.
How I ended up with an odd number on my casino winnings is the machines I play, you can play 9 lines for 1 cent/line. Not all the machines are set up that way. A lot of them are 1 line, 5 lines, 10 lines, 20 lines and 50 lines. I was playing 50 lines (50 cents) when I won the "big" amount. So I stopped and collected my winnings!
That must have been so scary for you with the hurricane. Why would your parents leave when there was a hurricane coming?

Kate - I hope everything goes well when checking all the buildings and houses! What a job that will be. Was your DD able to get her purse?
I'm glad you haven't had any bad news from your in-laws. That's thankful.
Did you end up going out for lunch somewhere? It's good that your DD gives your DGS a consequence for not doing homework. That 's a good lesson for him.

Went to my meeting today - 16 or 17 of us there today. When I got home I went thru our freezer down in the basement to see exactly how much food we have left to use up before we leave. We have enough food until October 30th!! I don't think we'll be here THAT long, so we'll probably end up giving whatever we don't use to the kids or neighbors. Then I went over my list of the stuff I bring to my DS's house and packed up a few more things. I like to bring as many "toiletry" items as I can, too. Anything that I can bring to his house means less I have to pack in TX.

I will try and clean tomorrow after church - hopefully the humidity won't be as high.

Have a peaceful Sunday!

Mema - we are having the muggy day here today! I have my fan on again, and blowing by me (oscillating).
I hope your FIL's visit all works out well. I'm sure that the weather may be a shock for him.
When do you plan to leave for TX? A lot of our 'snowbirds' stay here for Thanksgiving, the second Monday of October, and leave after that.
You did very well with your $10! How did you end up with such an odd number?
I did get my hair cut and am very happy with the result.
I used to love Monty Python too! That is indeed different from Midsomer Murders, although there is often some gentle humour in that too.

Kate - I hope that your DD's workplace will be given the 'all clear' very soon so she'll be able to get back to work!
My friends in Florence's path are also fairly far inland, and have been safe so far, but getting a LOT of rain. I remember Hurricane Hazel in 1954; I was babysitting my 2 younger brothers (my sister hadn't been born yet) while our parents went to Toronto for the evening. We didn't have a TV yet, so I was listening to the radio, and hearing about the flooding in Toronto, which was terrifying me. I was 11, and had no way to contact my parents. Our house was at the very end of the road, above a valley, and it sounded as if it would blow apart - I was paralyzed with fear. I was so relieved when they finally came home!
I'm sorry your DGS wasn't doing his homework; I hope you can find other things for him to do besides playing on the computer.

Have a great day!

Mema Ė it has seemed like a crazy year for weather. I know the week we spent in NC at the end August the temps and humidity were lower there than back here in Boston.

Hope everything works out well w/ your MILís memorial and that your FIL is OK and not too difficult w/ your DH.

Congrats on more than doubling your money!

My DDís work place has gas lines from the company involved and she has been told not to return to her building until the ďall clearĒ which may take a week or more. They are worried that the high pressure that caused the explosions may have caused weaknesses or cracks in other parts of the system. They have to go through each house and building individually to check for any damage to the gas lines. Thatís thousands of buildings.

Leslie - Hope you got your haircut and like it. I have mine scheduled for next week and I canít wait.

My husbandís family lives outside Charlotte NC. Theyíre far inland so the only thing they worry about is wind and rain. Havenít heard any issues from them yet.

Today Iím going to a meeting while DH is picking up DGS for his swim lesson. Weíll do something for lunch afterwards. DGS has decided he likes to come here and play on the computer while I make lunch instead of going out. But this week heís not allowed any screen time b/c he didnít do his homework at the after-school program. So perhaps weíll go out this week.

Boy, it was a hot and muggy day today here! No breeze either. Going to be warm again tomorrow, but we're supposed to get some rain - hopefully that will cool it off a bit. But by Monday, we'll be in a real cool down. Highs will only be in the 60's! It's feast or famine it seems. I talked to my FIL today to let him know when he flies up next week (for my MIL's memorial service) to make sure to pack warm clothes. He lives in TX permanently so he'll be shocked when he gets up here. The first night he stays with us, the low is 42! He's still having 90's for highs and 70's for the lows!

I got my laundry done and some of my ironing and then I was figuring out what I need to bring to my son's house before we leave for TX. I always leave a lot of winter clothing, boots, etc. at his place for when I come back in January. It saves me room for when I have to pack in TX.

Then DH and I went to the casino for the fish dinner and gambling. I got my free $10 and left with $24.12! So I didn't do too bad! It was worth the trip into Danbury anyway.

Tomorrow I should do some cleaning and more packing.

Leslie - Were you able to get your hair cut today?
I do like Agatha Christie books. The only other British show I used to watch when I was young (in my 20's) was Monty Python. My first husband loved those shows and they were pretty funny! But I know that is totally different.
I've watched movies like your last book - hoping they would move along faster. I'm glad you finished it.

Kate - Wow - you are good! I'm terrible in rush hour traffic! But it sure gave me something to think of. That will stay in my head from now on so "thank you" for sharing that! I've talked in meetings about a shortcoming of impatience and felt really good coming out of the meeting and the minute someone does something "I" think is wrong, I would get all upset!! Unbelievable, I think to myself (about myself). So now I have a new way of thinking, once again!! emoticon
That's too bad about your DD at her work - she couldn't even grab her purse! How awful! Was she able to go to work today? I really didn't hear anymore today about the explosions - do they know what happened? I did hear about the gas company, but not much else.

Enjoy your Saturday!

I could have sworn I had posted yesterday - don't know how I missed it!

Mema - I'm glad you had a good meeting, and got your haircut. My hairdresser was too busy to come yesterday, but she'll be here after lunch today, so I'm looking forward to that.
That calendar looks like a great idea.
I'm sorry you don't usually like British shows; I have watched quite a few. If you've ever liked Agatha Christie type books (murder mysteries), these shows are very much like that. I am enjoying them.
Most of my friends in Virginia and Carolinas are inland, so I hope the storm won't be too bad for them. I saw the freeways with all lanes open to the west.
I actually did like that book I was reading. I liked the characters, and wanted to know what happened; I just wished it would have moved along faster! I have finished it now, and have moved on to other books. I am also way behind with my New Yorker magazines, so I'm trying to catch up with them too.
I'm sorry your DH is anticipating a difficult time with his dad there. I hope everything goes smoothly.
That's kind of you to donate the money to the church.
I hope you enjoy your dinner at the casino, and get lucky with your $10.

Kate - I'm glad you both gave and received kindnesses in your rush hour drive!
Those gas explosions were close to you! I'm sorry your DD was forced to leave without her purse. I can imagine her frustration! I know someone on another site who works in North Andover, and was told to work from home today.

We had a surprise thunderstorm early this morning; now it's cloudy and humid, and quite warm too.

I hope you're having good days!

Going to the dentist is one of my least favorite things to do. And because my appointment was early, I had to drive through rush hour traffic. Sigh! But I thought about what a lift it gives my spirits when someone waits and lets me into the flow of traffic or waves me across a busy street. So I decided to see how many people I could do that for during my drive. Well over a dozen drivers that I waited for, waved on, allowed to turn in front of me. Think of all those people heading into work a bit less frazzled and a bit more grateful for that bit of kindness.

The tooth is still in my mouth and it will probably do just fine. The dentist wants to look at it next week to be sure it's healing up well. If everything looks OK, I'll be getting the root canal in about 3 weeks and then the crown. I was feeling pretty awful yesterday - in pain and really sick to my stomach. Mostly just sat in the recliner and snuggled w/ the puppy. Today is better.

Mema Ė have fun playing your $10.00. Hope you do win.

The gas explosions and fires were two towns away Ė about 6-8 miles. Both my kids work in the affected towns and were evacuated from their workplaces. Not much bother for my DS since it just meant he got off work a half hour early. A real issue for my DD since they rushed them out w/o letting them get their personal effects so she doesnít have her purse. She was worrying if sheíd be able to drive home to pick up DGS since her tank was on empty and she didnít have any money/cards. She's hoping she can get back into the office today.

I wrote out all my thank you's to the people who came to the Memorial service and gave $$. My sister and I are going to give the $$ we got to the church. My mom would have wanted that, I think. I was surprised that we even got $$. It wasn't a lot, ($300) but considering there were probably 50-60 people there altogether that seemed like quite a bit.

Tomorrow I'll get some laundry done and cleaning. Tomorrow night we're going to the casino for dinner and I have $10 in free play to use before Saturday from my b-day month! Maybe I'll win big! HA!

Kate - I think attendance at my meetings up here are the opposite of yours. I think in the fall and winter the attendance goes down because there are so many people who go south for the winter! But then, the opposite is true in TX. Attendance is way down in the summer, but goes back up in the winter!
I heard about the gas explosions out near you - were you very far from it? Sounded pretty scary!
How did your dental appointment go? Was he able to save the tooth or do you have to have an implant?

Leslie - Have you heard anything about the people you know in SC/NC? I hope they are safe.

Have a great Friday!

Mema Ė my meeting was a good one, too. We had 18 so I guess people are getting back into schedule for the fall. Summer attendance is always a bit smaller.

Nice photo calendar! If youíre not a fan of British mysteries, you might not like Midsomer Murders. They tend to introduce lots of characters and sub-plots in the beginning so it can be confusing keeping things straight.

Leslie Ė my MIL and both Sisters-in-Law live in NC but theyíre all well inland. Itís just going to be wind and tons of rain.

Iím on season 2 of Midsomer so there are still lots to come.

I remember the first apartment we had when we got married. I had to have the windows open most of the winter b/c it was so hot. The apartments on the corners of the building were always freezing.

I need to get up and moving soon to get to my marathon dental appt. I hope he can save the tooth but if not, heíll switch procedures in mid-stream and remove it to start the process for an implant. Sigh!

I had a lot of places to go to today so I was able to stop at a couple of stores before my meeting. We had 17 people at our meeting today and another first timer - a woman. So it was a good meeting.
Afterwards I went to Rice Lake to finish my shopping and then get my haircut. The 2 usual gals I have had at this place weren't there today, so another gal cut my hair, but she did a good job. Feels so much better!
It was cool and raining a bit when I left, but by the time I got out of my meeting and into Rice Lake, it was HOT! My phone says it was 82, but it was sunny so it felt a lot warmer.
When I got home this evening, in the mail was a calendar that my aunt and I get every year at the State Fair - they take your picture for free. Then she gets a copy made and laminates it and sends me my copy. Here's the picture - this year my DS was included!

Leslie - I have added Midsomer Murders to my list on Netflix. I will check it out. I'm not usually a fan of British shows, but I'll give it a try.
I know what you mean about the hurricane - I do hope the people you know stay safe. It does look like it's going to be a huge storm. There have been mandatory evacuations, so hopefully your friends have evacuated. I just watched a video showing one of the freeways for evacuation and they had ALL lanes leaving the area!
Did you get your book read? Why not just go to a different book instead of reading one you're not enjoying? emoticon

Kate - I don't think I could do water aerobics with a teacher who has no sense of rhythm! I can't even watch people on a dance floor that have no rhythm! LOL
I'm glad your yoga instructor gave good instructions - I don't know a lot of the poses either so that would be hard for me, too!
I hope all goes well for your dental appointment. I've had several crowns and as long as I don't have any pain then I'm ok with however long it takes. I just don't want to feel anything!

Next Saturday is DH's mom's memorial service and after the service we are taking his dad back with us to the cabin for him to stay over Sat. and Sunday nights. I'm not looking forward to it at all. My DH has been obsessing over it and has legitimate complaints when it comes to his father, but I told him tonight, he's not going to be able to change him at 91 years of age and so "acceptance" is the key!

Enjoy your day tomorrow!!

Mema - I'm glad there was a breeze to keep the gnats away.
You and Kate both mentioned needing haircuts, and I need one too! I plan to call my hairdresser later. She often works in this building on Thursdays, and I hope she might be able to squeeze me in.
Thanks for letting me know there are 10 days to pick something up from Walmart. I'm not sure I'd be able to get a ride, but I could call our delivery service to pick it up for me.
I'm really sorry you haven't been able to get Nashville on Netflix. There were 6 seasons.

Kate - there are a lot of seasons of Midsomer Murders, but each season is relatively short, with about 8 episodes. I am in season 9 now. I also have other shows on my list: How to Get Away with Murder (I love Viola Davis!), Heartland, Blacklist, and there are others I can't think of at the moment.
Our heat is shut off in the whole building from June 15 - September 15. Once it's on again, we do have some control with our thermostats, but they don't always seem to work very well. I usually end up adjusting my heat by opening/closing windows.
I don't blame you for not wanting to go to water aerobics, with the teacher with no sense of rhythm! That would drive me crazy. I'm glad you liked the yoga.
I'm glad your DH will be home. When anyone mentions CA, I always wonder if that's California or Canada...
Good luck with the dentist tomorrow! My cleaning appointment was also an hour - I thought it would never end.

I am really worried about that hurricane. It sounds like a real monster. I know people in NC, SC, and VA, so I hope they'll all be safe.

I went to the exercise class this morning, and now I am determined to finish the book which has seemed to be never-ending!

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Leslie Ė do you have control over the heat in your apartment? Or is it a system for the whole building?

I remember you mentioned Midsomer Murders and my DH put the whole series on our DVR. That series should keep my in TV watching materials for months to come there are so many seasons and episodes.

Mema Ė yes, the towing is expensive for DDís car. She really canít afford it.

I have a meeting today, too, but my hair cut is next week. LOL. Itís long over due for me, too.

I decided yesterday that I really didnít want to attend the water aerobics class w/ the teacher w/o a sense of rhythm. I went into the Y and did my heavy weight lifting and as I was leaving I saw people going in for a yoga class so I decided to try it. I donít do yoga very often so I donít know the names for the poses but this teacher gave instructions as she went along so I was able to keep up w/ the class w/o having to stop and look in the mirror all the time to see what I was supposed to be doing. Iíll probably do the class again next week.

DH will be home tonight from CA Ė just a short trip this time. Iíll be glad to have him home again.

Tomorrow morning I going to get my tooth worked on. It will either be a gum surgery to expose more of the tooth so it can be root canaled and crowned, or heíll take the tooth out and start the procedure for an implant. In any case, itís an hour long appointment so Iím not looking forward to it.

I got my lawn mowed and it was nice and breezy, so the bugs weren't "bugging" me. Those little gnats usually fly around my head - drives me crazy! Even with bug spray.

Tomorrow I have my meeting and then I will go to Rice Lake for shopping and a hair cut. I really needed it cut before my mom's memorial, but just didn't have time.

Leslie - when you order something(s) online thru Walmart, once they let you know your order is in, you have 10 days in which to pick your order up. So, hopefully that would help you in getting someone to take you.
I tried to get Nashville on Netflix here, but all they have is part of season 1. I really loved that show. I guess I'll just have to wait until more seasons are available. I don't remember how many seasons I watched, but I think at least 3, then they took it off "regular" tv. And we don't have cable or dish or anything like that.

Kate - I watched the whole season of Reverie as well. I thought it was quite good, too. Very interesting.
Is there a huge fine for your DD when her car gets towed?
What did you end up doing at the Y? Did you try a yoga class? I did do a series of strength exercises last night. I really need to take my measurements to see where I'm at. I have them in SP here, but haven't updated them in a long time. I should also update my weight!

Happy Hump day!!

I'm not sure why I missed posting yesterday. I just had the exercise class in the morning, and I was grateful for it because it was so chilly here. After I cooled down from the class, I had to put my oven on with the door ajar for some heat! Fortunately, it's a bit warmer today so I don't have to do that again.

Thanks to you both for letting me know about the online ordering for Walmart. The only thing that would worry me about that is when I would be able to pick it up. Diane might not be available to take me when it's ready at the store. I suppose I could get a courier service to get it... I order my groceries by phone, and they are delivered by the store right to my kitchen, so I don't have to deal with the heavy bags at all.

It looks like the memorial service was lovely, Mema. The flowers, cake, and tables all looked perfect, and there certainly was lots of purple, which would have pleased your mom! I'm happy for you that the minister did such a great job! I'm not surprised you were so tired afterward. You put a lot of effort into the planning! I'm glad you won't have responsibilities for the service for your DH's mom.
I'm certainly glad they don't charge for bringing a purse on the plane!
I really don't watch anything on TV other than one game show and the Y&R. On Netflix, I watched the series finale of Nashville last night - it was good. On Saturday night I watched a British film, A Death at a Funeral, which was quite funny. I have also been watching Midsomer Murders, another British show.

Kate - I'm glad you like the chilly weather. It's fine here today, but yesterday's high temp was supposed to only be 60 and I'm not sure it got that high.
I hope your DD won't have her car towed again!
That street faire sounded like fun.
I seem to have been reading the same book 'forever' - the book is at least 200 pages too long, and it's been slow-going. I've also also been trying to catch up with reading my New Yorkers.

I hope you're both having good days.

Leslie Ė getting lots of books read?

Mema Ė my DS works one or two evenings a week as a bartender at a local restaurant. They had a booth so he was there helping. They served BBQ and burgers.

This is not the first time my DD has had her car towed for the same reason. She just keeps thinking that she wonít fall asleep or wonít sleep so long.

I watched the whole first season of Reverie. I like it.

A quiet week w/ DH away. I had a meeting yesterday and today I'll drive to the Y for weights and maybe try a yoga class. Not sure yet.

I ran my errands today and then went around and picked up all the big sticks in the yard so I can mow tomorrow. Another nice day here, but a little bit warmer. When I got up it was chilly so I put on a sweatshirt, but when I got into town, it was quite a bit warmer there. When I got home I switched out my sweatshirt for a t-shirt!

Leslie - we have Walmart's here, too that have a pick up option. You order online and then wait for the email to let you know it's ready to pick up. Also, for groceries, there are some here that you place your grocery order, and then go to a designated spot in their parking lot, call them to let them know you're here and they come and load everything right into your car. You never even have to get out! My DIL has done that and my son and I went and picked them up. It was really slick! I would imagine you could save $$ too by not buying any impulse items! LOL
Are you watching anything exciting on Netflix? I actually haven't been on Netflix for awhile now. I'm catching up on some TV shows on Yahoo TV. I like America's Got Talent, Reverie, Station 19, The Resident and all the Chicago Fire, Med and PD shows.

Kate - The street faire sounds very nice and looks like it would be a good time. Were you able to spend some time there before getting DH off to the airport? Did you say your DS was manning a booth?
That's too bad about your DD having her car towed, but I bet she won't fall asleep again! LOL

I think I will get in some exercise before it gets too late.

Hope you all enjoy your Tuesday!!

Leslie Ė weíre getting the same cool down here. I woke up to 65 deg in the bedroom this morning Ė nice and chilly the way I like it. LOL.

Our Walmart has a ďpick up at storeĒ option. You can order things on line and then they will have them ready for you to pick up when you go there. Itís helpful if youíre getting stuff other than your ďusual itemsĒ because you donít have to walk all over the store hunting for them.

Weíre paying for the rental car but the other driverís insurance should reimburse us for the cost since she was at fault. We got a Toyota Corolla just b/c weíre used to the Toyota controls so itís easy.

My DD had a half day at work and parked in front of her home. She knows they do street sweeping one afternoon a month but she thought sheíd move the car before they started. Unfortunately she fell asleep so it was still there. Having her car towed meant she was late to pick up DGS from school as well so she was in trouble at the school as well.

Mema Ė Iím so glad the memorial service was all you hoped it would be. I can imagine that having to be ďonĒ for all those hours was totally exhausting even though you werenít having to do a lot of activity.

Very lovely flower arrangements.

I cribbed this from the web site: "The Reading Fall Street Faire is hosted by the Reading Rotary Club and is an annual community event bringing together local restaurants, retail businesses and community groups for a fun-filled, family-friendly day. With a childrenís area, band and dance performances and numerous vendor and community group booths to visit, there is something for everyone to enjoy."

This photo is from last year when it was sunny and very hot. This year there was a high overcast and it was about 65 degrees. A bit cool, but not bad.

It was a wonderful day yesterday for my mom's memorial service. It was a long day. DH and I left at 8:45 am and got home at 8:00 pm. But everything went very well. Here are a few pics -

Flowers from the kids - banners say Mema, Grandma, Great-May

Flowers from my sister and I - banner says Mom

Cake says - Always in our thoughts, Forever in our hearts

Lots of purple!!

And I had wanted to take a picture of DH and myself and forgot all about it. Too busy making sure everything was being taken care of!

Today, I didn't do much of anything. I didn't think I was that tired, but I did lay down to take a nap and slept for 2 HOURS!! And the only reason I woke up was the phone rang - so I don't know how long I would have slept! I must have been tired.

In 2 weeks, we'll do this all over again - only this time for DH's mother. But I just have to attend this one! Whew!!

Leslie - you sound like you were busy but got a lot of things done. That's always a nice feeling.
I'm sorry you couldn't find the things you needed at Walmart. I hope you will the next time. I do like Subway sandwiches, too.
Glad to hear your eye appt. went well, too!
I didn't realize you were that far north of Toronto! The last few days have been just lovely here. Sunny and no wind, so it feels nice.
The only "free" thing you can bring on the plane now is a personal item (usually a purse).

Kate - How was the town faire? And what, exactly is it? Sounds fun.
Did your DH get off OK?

Well, I think I'm ready for bed now even tho' it's early. I think I was more stressed than I realized. I have to go to the bank tomorrow. The $$ we got for my mom's memorial we are going to give it to the church. She would have wanted us to do that and they really can use the money. The minister who did the service did a fantastic job with his sermon-ette. Even tho' he never met my mom, he had asked about her when my sister and I met with him a couple of weeks ago and weaved a lot of what we told him about her into his sermon. It was very nice.

Have a great Monday!!

Once again, I apologize for being absent from the posts - I had a fairly busy week, at least for me. Tuesday wasn't bad, but Wednesday I had my exercise class in the morning and a dentist appointment in the afternoon. The appointment was for 1:30, but the closest ride I could get on the bus was at noon, so I did a lot of reading while I waited. I was pretty tired out by the time I got back.
Thursday, my friend Diane took me out to do all my errands, which included mailing the card and book to one of my DGSs for his birthday, and also a trip to Walmart. I really don't like going there unless I'm just picking up 'usual' items - we were trying to find a globe and a long mirror, but after lots of walking, couldn't find either. Apparently the store was pretty much cleaned out by back-to-school shoppers. Oh well, we should be able to get them next time. We had lunch too of course, at Subway - that was good. I had half my wrap for lunch and saved the other half for dinner.
Friday I ordered meds and groceries, and seemed to be busy answering the phone, and the door, and putting things away.
Yesterday I kind of collapsed and didn't do much of anything. So, here I am finally.

Mema - I hope everything went smoothly yesterday! You did a lot of preparation, and I'm sure it was emotional for you.
I'm very glad to hear your DH's eye appointment went well. Mine did too, not long ago.
Our weather has really cooled off in a hurry! It's been going down to the low 40s at night, and just barely into the 60s in the daytime. I have had to almost close 2 windows.
Actually, if you drew a straight line across to Owen Sound, which is where I am, (and about 3 hours NW of Toronto), we'd be almost even!
I'm sorry you had a problem with Shutterfly. My DS and DIL do a calendar every year for Christmas presents - I love it. When my first DGS was very young, I used to be able to see photos of him online at Shutterfly.
I'm sorry the airline is charging extra for everything, even a carry-on bag!! I can understand them wanting to limit how much people bring on board, but think everyone should be entitled to one free carry-on!!
And, congrats from me too on the weight loss!

Kate - I understand about the schools needing to make up snow days, but then why not begin the school year right after Labour Day instead of 2 days later?
Wow, that amount of dilation in the eyes would be major indeed! I'm sure I couldn't have driven with that.
Good for you with your plank challenge! I really should be doing more for my core too.
You certainly gave your DGS a busy day, with swimming and the trampoline park! I bet you were tired out!
How is your rental car? Is that also covered by your insurance?
I'm glad you like the spin class, but sorry you weren't near the fans. I always try to be near the fans in our exercise classes too. Our exercises are not terribly vigourous, but it's been very hot and humid for most of the summer, and there is no A/C in the room.
I'm sorry your DD's car got towed!
I hope you enjoy the town faire, and get your DH to the airport in plenty of time.

It's still only in the 50s here this morning.

I hope you both have good days!

Weíre having a cooler day here today. It was downright chilly last night and it will be in the low 60ís today. The town faire is today so that will be nice. The last 2 years it was boiling hot and water bottles were in demand. DS is working the booth for the restaurant where he bartends. I might try to get over there, but I will driving DH to the airport in the middle of the afternoon so I wonít have much time. I need to finish packing his suitcase this morning before I head to church.

Mema Ė hope all goes well for the memorial service and youíre able to talk w/ all your momís old friends.

Spin class was lovely but I got there just before class started and had to take the bike right in front of the instructor in the center of the room away from all the fans. Lots of sweating.

We have nice cooler weather this weekend. There will be some warmer days next week but the nights will stay in the 60ís so Iíll be keeping the windows open and the A/C turned off.

DH has a meeting this morning at our church. Iím headed down to get DGS for his swim lessons. I have to go early b/c my DDís car got towed and she wants me to drive her over to the tow lot.

Did my laundry today and then called and confirmed deliveries on my flowers, cake and memorium cards. So everything should be set for tomorrow. If you don't see a post from me on Sunday you'll know I was just too tired from the day. It will be a long day.

So, I'm trying to book my January flight from TX to MN on SunCountry's website and everything went fine until I tried to pay. I put in my credit card #, but it keeps telling me I have to enter the type of card, but it doesn't give me any options (like Visa, MC, etc) so I'm on hold right now to talk with someone. When I was checking flights, the prices were very good - but now I know why. Now you HAVE to pay for ANY seat you reserve. The lowest price was $9 in the back, but that's what I took. And you have to pay for a carry-on bag. I always have a carry-on and a checked bag, so I had to pay for both of those. And you pay BOTH ways. So the flight itself was $248.00, but an extra $109 in fees!!! Unbelievable. But you know I've seen so many people try to get on the plane with so many extra things that I suppose it was bound to happen.

Kate - I hope all went well when you dropped off your car and getting your rental car.
Were you able to get a bike by the fans? That's what I would be trying to get, too! Seems like once I start to sweat, I'm dripping!!
I hope your coupon works for Shutterfly, that would be great.
I'm glad you are getting some cooler weather as well. We have a stretch of beautiful, sunny days, mid-70's for temperatures, it's great!!

Leslie - Hope you are getting in a lot of reading!

Have a super Saturday!!

I need to get out early this morning and take the booster seat and my shopping bags out of the car and then drive it over to the shop. I'll walk from there to the rental place to pick up a car for the week. DH will be away most of next week so I'll be the main driver of the rental. I have a spin class at 9:30 and I want to be there early enough to get a bike by the fans.

Mema Ė weíre finally getting some cold nights starting tonight. Iíll have the windows open and the fan going instead of the A/C.

Thanks for the info on the photos. A friend of mine sent me a coupon for a free book on Shutterfly so Iíll try that first. If it doesnít work, Iíll do Walmart.

I did get my house cleaned today - it was another beautiful day, although when I woke up this morning (which was very early 5:45 am) my phone said it was 39 degrees outside!! A little on the chilly side. I didn't get out of bed right away, though, stayed under the covers and checked my phone.

Kate - I'm sure you were tired out!! Sounds like it was a fun day with your DGS.
I was going to make a photo calendar on Shutterfly about a year ago because I had a coupon or something. I got all done with it and it wouldn't take off the coupon amount. I actually had a live chat with someone and I can't remember exactly why I couldn't get the discount, so I cancelled my order. It wasn't anything I was doing wrong, it really was something on their side, but they wouldn't give it to me. But as far as making my calendar, it was pretty easy. I would guess photo books to be very similar. I've made photo books on walmart.com and calendars at walmart.com and have always had good experiences. I did photo calendars for my mom for about 10 + years thru walmart.
When I did the straight plank challenge I think the longest I went was 2 minutes. I didn't end up finishing the challenge, but I still have it in one of my email folders. I should start it again.

Leslie - Hope all is well and you are just busy catching up with emails and reading.

Hope you both enjoy your Friday!! Laundry is on my agenda!

Ahhh! First day of school! I decided that it would be a good idea to make sure DGS was really tired out so heíd sleep well last night. Trampoline park in the morning and swimming pool in the afternoon. I donít know if he was tired out, but I sure was.

I have a whole bunch of photos (digital) that I want to make into a summer vacation book for DGS. Anyone have any experience w/ the various service like Shutterfly or Mixbook?

Mema Ė what a nice size for a meeting. I go to one small meeting and 2 bigger ones that used to be about 18-24 but they seem to have shrunk over the years and we end up w/ 10-15 people.

Hope all goes well w/ the planning for the memorial. Sounds like youíre on top of all the details. Thatís one good thing about having the service so long after your Momís death Ė youíre not operating in a fog from grief.

Iíve done the straight plank challenge but could never get up to 4 minutes. It seemed like they added time slowly at the beginning but then started really ramping up quickly after 2 Ĺ and I couldnít keep up.

Leslie - hi! any break from the heat and humidity? We're getting cooling trend tomorrow after record breaking heat forecast today.

We had 18 people at our meeting today and 3 newcomers! It was a good meeting. We also had a gorgeous day here as well. Perfect fall day!! I love it! Tomorrow I will clean my house and do laundry on Friday. On Saturday, we'll leave here about 8:45 to get to St. Paul about 11:00 am. That will give me an hour or better for set up and then some time to change my clothes and freshen up. I worked on the "thank you's" for the minister, organist and the women who will serve the cake. According to internet "funeral etiquette" I will send a more formal thank you to the minister afterwards - which makes sense. But I wanted to say something in the card that I'm giving to him with the $$.

Kate - I looked at your plank challenge!! Holy cow! That one looks tough. I have a planking challenge, but mine is just a straight plank that after 4 weeks you hold for 4 minutes. Some of those positions of yours looked tough. Congrats to you - keep up the good work!!
Did you get to the pool today?

Leslie - Hi! Hope all is well!!

Have a Thankful Thursday!!

Mema Ė nice that you didnít get too much rain while you were out for your DHís appt. I donít like driving in heavy rain.

Congrats on the new lower number on the scale. I have a meeting today, too. DH said he could work downstairs in the family room and keep an eye on DGS while Iím away.

We do have ticks here, but mostly in the woods. I did pick up one hiking w/ my DGS in NH that first week of summer vacation. It had just barely attached so I pulled it off and we all checked carefully that no one else had one.

Leslie Ė good to see your post. Years ago, all the schools in this area started after Labor Day. Then we had a couple of winters where there were so many snow days that they couldnít make them all up before the end of June. After that, many of the schools move the start date to before Labor Day. Boston city did not and thatís why my DGS was in school until June 28th this summer.

Iíll have to rent a car for the week mine is in the shop. We have places we need to drive to like DGSís swim lessons and my dentist appointments and picking up veggies on Friday.

The dilation they do for the surgery is major compared to what my normal eye doctor does. The colored iris part was a barely visible ring around the pupil.

We had a really quiet day yesterday. Took DGS along while we voted in the primary and then did some shopping. I do need to get him out to the pool today or some other activity so he sleeps well tonight.

I started a plank challenge yesterday. I had thought when I looked at it that it would be really easy peasy the first week. And it wasnít difficult but I was breathing a bit more by the end and I can feel something in my core muscles this morning. I havenít done any core work in months.

Well, our day wasn't a total wash out. We had light rain off and on. It wasn't until we were actually driving home that it rained harder, but let up when we arrived home. DH's eye appt. went well. No sign of glaucoma or macular degeneration - his father has the macular so it's good it's not showing up in DH. He will need cataract surgery, but not for a few more years.

Now it's raining again. We do need the rain, so it's good. And all in all it was a good day to not be home with the wet weather.

Tomorrow will be sunny and I've got my meeting to go to. Over the last several weeks, I've been using my program to help me lose a few pounds and it has really worked! My worst time for snacking is after supper and I have done very well not eating after dinner. There have been a couple of exceptions (like the Fair!), but I'm feeling pretty good. I stepped on the scale today and saw a number I have not seen in a very long time! emoticon

Leslie - glad to see your post. I did enjoy my Egg Foo Yung!
I'm glad you got in a lot of reading.
I was surprised you were getting such hot and humid weather - I hope you get your cool down on Thursday! I doubt we'll get any more days in the 90's here. More like mid 80's if we get a warm spell. I think if I drew a straight line across from where I live to Toronto, we are quite a bit further north than you, which always seems strange to me because I always think of Canada as on top of us (which most of it is).

Kate - We haven't had any warnings about West Nile, but we have a lot of ticks here and we have to be careful of the deer ticks and Lyme's disease. Especially DH - he got that at the end of last summer. Good that you spray up if you're going outside. Our mosquito population did pick up, but mostly it seems like they were out more in the evening and we aren't outside much after dinner unless the kids are up, so we've been spared a bit on that!
Do your DS's dogs behave pretty well for you?
So what will you do once you no longer have DGS so much during the week?

Have a great day!

Sorry for being MIA for most of the weekend! I kept intending to post, then forgetting... I did do quite a bit of reading, one book called The Four Corners of the Sky by Michael Malone, and also New Yorker magazine - I've fallen way behind with those!

Kate - I guess your DGS, and dogs, are with you today. Are you going swimming? I'm surprised your DGS doesn't start school until Thursday. The kids here all start today. My grandsons started last Wednesday, and my younger GS had orientation for middle school on Tuesday last week. I don't understand starting school just before Labour Day...
I'm glad your car will be going in on Friday. I hope it won't take long to get it fixed. Will you have a replacement car while yours is getting fixed?
I always drove even after having my eyes dilated. Things were a little blurry, but not too bad. I don't have to think about it any more now that I use the mobility bus for appointments.
I'm glad you were enjoying your 3-day break!
It's warm and humid today, feeling like 98 F, and tomorrow will be the same. Thursday's high is supposed to be in the upper 60s.
My bedroom window is open pretty much year round. I do pull it across more in winter, but only have to close it when there's a cold north wind.
I'm glad you're protecting yourself from the mosquitos!!

Mema - I'm glad you were able to get all the work done while you had visitors!
I'm glad you saw some Highland dancing. I love bagpipes too. We had a piper at my brother's funeral. He was wonderful.
The exchange student is only here for 2 months, and my volunteer's family is always very busy with lots of activities, so I don't think he'll really have time to feel lonely!
I hope your DH's appointment goes well today. Enjoy your Egg Foo Yung!!

I hope you both have good days!

Two more busy days before my fall schedule starts. Today Iíll have DGS and the dogs here. Same thing tomorrow. Not sure what weíll do. Swim perhaps. And make a run to Target for a few things. I need to pick tomatoes again, too. We have West Nile virus warnings out for the whole state so I need to use bug spray when going out there. The mosquitos are fierce this year.

Mema Ė hope all goes well w/ your DH appointment. Too bad the weather is rainy.

We won't be getting any cool nights until late this week - Friday I think. I love to sleep w/ the window open when the temperatures get down below 65.

The pool at the YMCA is indoors. Actually there are two pools Ė a full size lap pool and a half size pool that is warmer and shallower. Itís used for the toddler swim lessons and for free swim. The therapy classes use that one, too.

Leslie - how are you?

I had a pretty nice relaxing day. I slept in (well, actually I was awake, just didn't get out of bed right away). I didn't have anything I HAD to do. Tomorrow DH and I will go to Rice Lake for his eye appt. and shopping ahead of that. Although it's going to be raining almost all day while we're out and about. emoticon That won't be much fun.

Kate - I think all my grand kids start school tomorrow.
Is the pool that you go to indoor? That should be fun for your DGS.
Our weekend was rather warm and humid here, but now I think we're going to get some cooler weather. Definitely cooler at night. I saw the forecast over the next couple of days and we're supposed to have lows in the upper 40's! My bed is just beneath my window and I love being under the covers with a cool breeze blowing in!

Leslie - I hope you are getting caught up with all your reading.

Happy Tuesday to you!!

Mema Ė nice that you got all the winterizing chores done w/ the kids here. Now you can enjoy the fall until itís cold and you head back south.

We pay a little bit extra on our insurance for a ďwaiver of deductibleĒ. Since Iíve never had an Ďat-faultí accident, weíve always had the deductible waived and not had to pay anything.

I had my eyes dilated for the initial exam, the surgery and for the follow up so Iím getting used to navigating my way on foot to the train w/ blurry vision, but driving wouldnít be possible.

Iím enjoying my 3 day break from family. DGS will be back here on Tuesday and Wednesday. He starts school on Thursday and weíll see him only on Saturday mornings for the fall. I need to think up some stuff to do. They should be re-opening the pool after itís annual shutdown and cleaning. Perhaps weíll head over there for an hour or so tomorrow.

Leslie Ė are you getting this last week of warm weather? I liked the coolness we had over the weekend but weíre headed back up for a few days of hot and muggy weather.

DH's son and family left today - peace and quiet the rest of the weekend! emoticon It was fun, but busy. They got everything put away that we needed them to do. We had some leftovers for dinner tonight, so that was easy. Tomorrow, nothing planned but on Tuesday, DH h as an eye appointment in Rice Lake. He gets his eyes dilated so I have to go with him. We'll eat at the Chinese buffet for lunch which means I will get my Egg Foo Yung (they only have that at lunch time).

Kate - I washed up the sheets and towels from the kids but most of my laundry was done already, too.
Glad you had a nice relaxing couple of days. You've had a busy summer. How much will you see DGS once school starts?
I hope all goes well with your car. I think we always have to pay our deductible no matter who's at fault. They say even if someone rear ends you that you are partly at fault for being there! I think that's so dumb. But we haven't had anything major or minor, thank goodness.

Leslie - I did watch some Highland Dancing on youtube - it was really neat. I LOVED the bagpipes the best, actually. I have always loved the sound of bagpipes.
How neat that you got to meet the exchange student. I could not imagine going overseas at that age - I think I would be so lonesome. But I think it's a fabulous opportunity.
Hope you got in a lot of reading.

Enjoy your Monday!

Ahh! Sunday Ė day of rest! Yesterday was really a day of rest, too. I watered my garden for the first time in weeks. We had so much rain I didn't need to water it most of July.

And I did some laundry. There wasn't much b/c I did most of it Wed. afternoon when we got home. Went to a 12 Step meeting and ran a few errands. Mostly just relaxed.

Leslie Ė have a fun weekend reading. Iíve seen Highland dancing and itís wonderful to watch.

My car goes in the shop on Friday. All the auto body shops are booked up around here. Itís usually a 2 week wait just to get your car into the shop and then another week or more to get it back.

Mema - I knew you were busy with Dakota and your family; I was just drowning in emails! I get a lot of notices from newspapers, and the New Yorker, and other newsletters too. I still haven't finished reading everything I want to read. I have been unsubscribing from the ones I no longer want.
Highland dancing is Scottish dancing - I'm sure you could find a demonstration at YouTube. I love watching it!
It was indeed a real treat to be so close to the hawk! It was beautiful.
I love roasting hot dogs and marshmallows over a fire! Haven't done that in many years though.

Kate - that's wonderful that you don't have to pay the deductible if the accident was not your fault! That sounds very fair. Is your car being repaired now?
I'm glad your eye is perfect.
Just a couple more days of having your DGS with you. I hope they'll be good days.
I'm sorry Lego Land was a bit of a disappointment. I'm glad he liked the climbing though.

My library volunteer was here last evening with an exchange student from France who is spending a couple of months here. He will be attending grade 8 at the middle school along with my volunteer's son. I told him about my family having spent a year in Lyon not that long ago. He's from a suburb of Paris. He seems like a very nice boy. And they brought me 4 more books; I'm also on the waiting list for another book. I know what I'll be doing this weekend!

I hope you both have good days!

We took DGS to Lego Land yesterday. It wasnít as exciting as he had hoped it would be but we went on both the rides twice and watched 3 different short 4D movies and got sprinkled w/ water and soap bubbles. He liked the station with wheels where you could make Ďrace carsí and ramps to run them down. But the hit was an enormous climbing structure. He probably spend close to 2 hours in there altogether.

Mid afternoon, DH and DGS left to drive home and I caught the subway to go for my eye follow up. Everything looks perfect after the laser surgery although the doctor did say that I might be back for the other eye a few years down the road. Weíll have DGS here Tuesday and Wednesday next week and then heíll start school. Whew! Itís been a great summer but Iím ready for a break.

Leslie Ė that is a ton of emails. I probably get about 1/3 of that. Periodically, I go through and unsubscribe to lots of recurring emails. Most of them I just trash w/o looking at them.

Congrats to your sister on her engagement. Sounds like a full and interesting time w/ your family. Nice that your grand nieces performed for you.
We have a waiver on our insurance so if the other driver is at fault, we donít have to pay the deductible.

Mema Ė I did my tons of laundry on Wednesday afternoon when we got home so I have very little to do today. We have lovely cool weather right now but weíll get a few more days of HOT next week. Roasting hot dog and marshmallows over the fire brings back wonderful memories.
