Leslie - I was MIA for about a week, so don't worry. It was just too hectic with having Dakota here and then busy when I was staying at my DS's place.
WOW - you have an awful lot of emails! I don't think I get that many in a month!! The majority of my emails go to my junk mail and most of those I delete.
Sounds like you had a really nice visit with all of your family. What is Highland dancing?
How cool that you were so close to see the hawk!

Kate - Too bad the waffle machine was broken, but it sounded like DGS got something special anyway.
Did you get to Lego World? They have something similar at the Mall of America, but I've not been there. Sounds like it would be fun for kids.
Did your eye appt. go well?
I remember my mom used to make her own spaghetti sauce and it seemed like she cooked it for hours on the stove, but boy did it smell and taste good!

I had a ton of laundry to do so I got that done today. Yesterday, it was absolutely beautiful here - breezy, no humidity and just the right temp. I mowed the lawn yesterday. Tomorrow night we'll have our campfire and roast hot dogs and marshmallows with DH's son's family.

Hope you both have a wonderful Saturday!!

Good morning! My sincere apologies for not posting for so long. After my time away with my sister and her fiance, I came home to almost 300 emails in my inbox, and it took me until yesterday to reach the end of them, while I continued to receive about 100 new emails each day. I'm trying to catch up with everything!
I did have a wonderful time with my family! My sister's daughter was there with her 2 girls, and her older son was also there with his girlfriend. And I found out that my sister is engaged to Bob, who she's been with for at least 10 years I think!
I loved the reno on their house! It had been gutted and all of the interior was rebuilt. It's really gorgeous. A lot of planning went into the renovation.
We certainly ate well!
My great-nieces demonstrated their roller blading skills, and also Highland dancing, which was fantastic!
My sister and I went to the bird banding station last Friday morning, and soon after we got there, a huge and gorgeous juvenile red-tailed hawk was caught in the net. What a wonderful bird! I was only about 3 feet away from it. We stayed until they released that bird - how joyful to see it take off. They had never previously banded a hawk there, so it was a wonderful treat for everyone.

Kate - I've also lived in really old houses before, one from the 1800s.
I'm sorry about the estimate on the car repair. I hope your deductible is not too high!
I'm glad you had a good trip to NC. I stayed in a B&B once, but really prefer a hotel.
I love the picture you posted of your group!
I'm very sorry your DD objected to the animal park. I can imagine that her comments were not appreciated. I'm sorry your DS was not speaking to her.
I'm very sorry about the missing phone! I would be frustrated too, but as you said, there really isn't anything to be done about it.
It sounds like you're having an excellent harvest from your garden! I love Roma tomatoes. I've been using them in Caprese salads.

Mema - I'm so glad that you and Dakota had a great time together! I love the photos.
I'm happy for you that you got to the State Fair. I'm not a fan of heights, so think I would have to pass on that Ferris wheel! I do love roller coasters though, and don't mind going up high at the start of the run.
I'm glad everything is in order for the memorial service.
It's great that you'll have help this weekend with putting things away for winter. I will just be having a quiet weekend at home, but I'm expecting my library volunteer today. My books were due back yesterday, but she has been out of town.

I hope you're both having a good day!

Mema – it sounds like you had a lovely time w/ your DGD and the rest of the family. I do like state fairs. When I was home schooling my kids, we would go on a weekday. It’s always so crowded on weekends.

Enjoy the long weekend getting everything set for the winter. We have friends w/ a place in Maine and they always have one long day of getting things winterized. Nice that you can stay later this year and enjoy the fall.

Hope all goes smoothly for the memorial service.

One day while we were away, DGS decided he wanted waffles. It got to be a bit of a joke b/c he would just randomly say “waffles” in the middle of a conversation. I looked on line for restaurants near the animal park and there was one that had waffles as a specialty. Unfortunately, when we got there, the machine was broken. He was disappointed but they made him a lovely plate of French toast w/ strawberries, bananas and whipped cream. Then we bought frozen waffles for the next two breakfasts at the BnB.

Today is our last Friday of the summer to do something special w/ DGS. I think we’ll take him to the local Lego World in the morning. I have a follow up w/ the eye doctor this afternoon. And then the long weekend. Whew! It’s been a busy summer.

Yesterday I picked a couple of pounds of cukes from the garden and two pint containers of cherry tomatoes. I also harvested 8-9 pounds of roma tomatoes and made a big pot of tomato sauce. I'll divide it up today and freeze batches. The whole house smelled so good as it cooked. When DS came to pick up the dogs he wanted to know what was cooking and I said I’d give him some next time he was here.

Hello! I'm back! It has been a long week. But a very good one. Having Dakota here for those days was so much fun!! She was so good and we had a wonderful time together.
Here are some photos:

She helped make waffles!

This was a FREE toy from the big garage sale that we went to!

And this was after I brought her back to her house - she has gymnastics on Monday evenings. She's pretty good!

My aunt and DS and I all went to the MN State Fair on Tuesday! Here's a picture of the giant Ferris wheel DS and I went on! It rises 150' in the air!

And then my sister and I bought a brick that is permanently placed at the fair - my mom and dad loved the fair!

Here's the close-up of it - It says, In Memory of Sis and Gordy who loved the State Fair. With Love from Kathy and Leann

Kate - now I'm back home and in my own bed!! It is good! Sounds like your trip was good, with just a couple of "hiccups". Loved seeing the picture of your family.

I'm now working on the details for my mom's memorial service. The long obituary has been ordered for this Sunday, the flowers are ordered, the cake, the "In Memory Of" cards have been ordered. The organist is set, the minister is set, the service is set. So I think most everything is taken care of.

We're having DH's son and family up this weekend for Labor Day. The son will pull in the dock and we'll put a couple of the swings away that sit around the fire pit. (the heavier one's). And he'll have to put all the kayaks and fishing boat away, too. But DH and I will get to enjoy the fall season this year. We had a camp fire tonight after dinner. It was nice.

Leslie - I hope you had a great trip! I'm eager to hear all about it.

Happy Friday to you all!!

Good to be back home in my own bed. Today will be back to ordinary summer schedule – the dogs and DGS will all be here. I got most of the wash done yesterday so I just need to tidy up and put away the rest of the stuff – toiletries, electronics, etc. It will be nice to get back to my fall schedule the end of next week.

We didn’t find the phone at home like my DH had hoped we would. DD is distraught but there’s nothing anyone can do about it. I guess she feels if she make enough waves something will change? Poor DH. He feels responsible but he can’t fix it. He thinks he put it in DGS’s backpack and it dropped out sometime on the trip. DD insists she was watching him the whole time, but I know she was sleeping most of the trip.

We went to a safari type animal park yesterday. We rode around in a wagon and every time the wagon stopped, the animals came up to be fed. Deer, llamas, antelope, water buffalo and American bison, even giraffes and the big birds like ostriches and emus. It was a fun day except for my DD complaining about how un-ethical it is to keep animals to show for profit. Sigh. Kind of put a damper on everyone in earshot. I wish I’d talked w/ her beforehand and asked her to hold her tongue. It made my DS so embarrassed that he is now not speaking to her. Double sigh.

We had a really nice day. Made breakfast at the BnB and then met my MIL at her church. Afterwards we did a quick change and met up w/ MIL, both SILs and BIL at his country club. Had a snack bar lunch and went swimming. Even my 89 yr old MIL got into the pool and did her water aerobics exercises.

Picked up pizza for dinner on the way back to MIL's house. I had 2 slices and a salad I'm feeling the effects of the bread this morning but not too badly. I'll keep away from bread today. Just the 5 of us - DH, DD, DS, DGS and I are going to an animal park today. We'll find some place w/ more healthy food for dinner.

Leslie - hope your time w/ your sister was a lot of fun.

Mema - how did the sleep over at grandma's go for Dakota?

Hello from North Carolina,

We had a smooth flight. A few bumps in the road – I accidentally packed DD’s toiletries in her carry on bag instead of our checked suitcase. I discovered it after we had checked our bag, so we had to check a second bag. And then, DD gave her phone to DH to pack in his backpack since she wasn’t carrying a purse and it’s missing now. Either it fell out somewhere or he put it down at home and didn’t pack it. Sigh – she’s feeling a bit worried about it.

We had a quiet afternoon chatting w/ all the in-laws. Then we checked into our AirBnB and met up w/ them all for dinner. That was our belated “Happy Birthday” to MIL. She turned 89 on Wednesday. The house we rented is very much like staying at someone’s home rather than a hotel. (A little old lady’s home.) Little instruction notes posted all around the place. But it’s very spacious and the beds are comfy.

Leslie - hope your weather is cooling off.

Mema - having a wonderful time w/ your DGD?

I won't be here tomorrow morning b/c we'll be leaving at 5:30 to catch the flight to NC. DD and DGS will spend the night and DS will drive over early to go to the airport with us. I'm working on relaxing and letting go of stress. These multi generational get togethers always make me feel like I'm responsible for making sure everything goes well and every one is happy. I keep telling myself - I'm not the hostess, I'm not in charge of my adult children, and I just need to enjoy my time. "Don't Worry, Be Happy". LOL

We got the estimate for the car repair. Here's a photo of the damage - one broken head light, one fog light, and a dented up bumper. Estimate - $2400! shocking!

Mema – have a safe and enjoyable trip picking up DGD. And enjoy your joint birthday dinner.

Leslie – all packed and ready to go tomorrow?

I chuckled when I say your “not terribly old” post about the house. It’s all a matter of perspective. I have a friend whose house was built in the 70’s and she keeps mentioning all the things that can go wrong in an “OLD” house and the problems they run into while renovating an “OLD” house. She has only ever lived in newly constructed homes before. My house is 110 years old so I do know about old houses but there are building in our town that were built in the late 1600's. Now that is OLD.

I also love dark chocolate and licorice – sweet but strong flavors.

It's DGS's last day of camp and he keeps say "It can't be." "Can I go again tomorrow?" In retrospect, I probably should have signed him up for Friday, too, b/c I'll be busy packing, but I didn't think of that at the beginning of summer when I set the schedule.

The appraiser should be here sometime today to look at the car. I'll probably go over to the auto body shop and schedule an appointment to get it fixed next month.

Mema - I'm glad you got to your meeting and saw the gal you love! I also had a friend who took lots of notes at meetings.
Having the cot for Dakota set up next to you sounds like a very good idea! I can imagine how excited she is about that and the sleeping bag.
I hope your dinner tonight is wonderful.
By 'traditional lunch', I just meant that it has become a tradition for us to have lunch out at a certain restaurant. However, my traditional meal is the Thai Shrimp Curry Bowl - it's delicious!
Their house was not terribly old - maybe from about the 1950s.

Kate - I also have a sweet tooth, but do love dark chocolate, and licorice!
The town I think of that's near the St. Lawrence River, is Cornwall, which is where I cross the border when I drive to Vermont.
I'm really sorry about the accident! I'm glad nobody was injured. I know what you mean about the hassle of it all. I'm glad your car is drivable!

I am off to my eye doctor soon - the mobility bus will be picking me up.
Then, I need to pack. I'm having a hard time deciding on clothes to take.
My sister will be here in the morning to pick me up, and I'll be back Saturday afternoon, so probably won't be posting again until Sunday.

I hope you both have very good days, with visitors or travelling!

Mema – sleeping in your room should make your DGD feel much more comfortable than being alone in a strange room.

My DGS is a healthy eater, but more picky now than he was as a toddler. He loves veggies and unusual things like sushi. It drives my DD crazy that he has a real sweet tooth which she does not. He didn’t have anything w/ sugar in it until he was 2 but he loves anything sweet – except dark chocolate. LOL

Leslie – how exciting to see all the new renovations on your sister's home. I don’t remember the name of the town my friend came from but it was in Ontario near the St. Lawrence river. She lives a couple of towns over from us now (about 20 min). At the time we met at our church in Boston, her husband was doing graduate work at the same school that my DH and I attended for undergrad – although we had both already graduated.

We went out yesterday to pick up a burger from Fudd’s and got hit. A young woman was coming out of the parking lot at the commuter train trying to cross the road we were traveling down and didn’t see us b/c of the bus parked at the curb. I didn’t see her either until she was past the bus and headed right for me. My front left bumper and her front right bumper hit at right angles. Fortunately no one was hurt since we were both going pretty slow but I know that it always costs more than you expect to fix these kind of things. And I hate the hassle of dealing w/ it all and having to rent a car while it’s being fixed. But at least mine is drivable. Since we’re planning to drive to the airport on Saturday, that’s really fortunate. The other driver had her bumper pushed right up to the tire and needed a tow.

Leslie - thank you for the birthday wishes!
Your time with your sister sounds lovely. It's always fun to see what someone has done with their house and especially a whole house renovation. Was it an older home? What is your traditional lunch that you mentioned?

Kate - how early do you have to leave on Saturday? I hope you have a wonderful time.
I'm hoping Dakota will like the buffet, but she's not a very good eater, so we'll see. I'm going to take DS and the family out to eat tomorrow evening to celebrate my DIL's and my b-days since they are just a day apart. Hers was Monday.

Went to my meeting today and saw a gal there who I don't see often, but I just love her. Every meeting she has ever been to she has "taken notes". She brings along a notebook to write down things she wants to remember. She told me once how many notebooks she has filled and I can't remember exactly, but it was something like 20 or 30! And she keeps every one of them! So it was good to see her.

I've got the cot set up in my bedroom next to my bed for Dakota. She just loves it! And we bought a new sleeping bag for her, so I'm sure she'll be excited about that, too. It's so funny how kids get excited over just regular things.

Hope everyone's Wednesday is wonderful!

Mema - emoticon I hope your day is wonderful!! Your necklaces look lovely, and I like your new glasses too!
Yes, I wonder too if we might have crossed paths in WI all those years ago - you would have been much younger than I though...
My sister will pick me up Thursday morning to take me to her house which is on Lake Erie, well, about a block from the beach. They have just finished a huge renovation project - the whole house was gutted and redone. I am looking forward to seeing it. They'll bring me back Saturday, and I hope we'll have our traditional lunch out here before they drop me off.
Wow, your mom did have a big family!

Kate - My sister lives in Long Point on Lake Erie; it's about a 3-hour drive from here, so I really appreciate her coming up to get me!
I gather your Canadian friend lives near you now. Where in Canada is she from?
I love ratatouille!! Thanks for the reminder. I would love to have that soon. I'll write the ingredients on my shopping list for next week. I love plum tomatoes. Well - I love everything in ratatouille! I'm glad yours turned out well.
I love Chinese buffets too!
Today is our day for rain and storms, then it will be cooler tomorrow and lovely on Thursday. I haven't heard about Friday's weather yet. I've got a list of things to pack and take with me, but that may change a bit when I find out about the weather.

Sorry I didn't post yesterday - the day got away from me!

Have great days!

Mema – I think your DGD will enjoy the buffet. I know my DD takes DGS to a Chinese buffet and he loves going along the tables picking out his favorites.

We’re getting rain and storms here on Wednesday followed by a couple of nice warm days w/ low humidity. I’ll be busy getting things washed and ready to pack on Friday. DD and DGS will spend the night Friday so they can be here ready to go for the flight early Saturday. DS will drive over early Saturday morning and ride into the airport with us.

Leslie – are you getting your things ready to pack for your visit w/ your sister later this week?

Kate - When my son was young, he liked going thru the car wash, too! But we didn't have a sunroof. That would be interesting.
That is very cool that you still meet up with your Canadian friend every month.
The workshop sounds like it was very successful! With 3 speakers and then to break into small groups, it must have been well attended.
What a good way to use your tomatoes! I'm glad that turned out for you.
We finally got a little bit of rain this evening and we need it.

I got my laundry finished today and will need to iron tomorrow. I will also go to a meeting tomorrow since I will be driving to the Twin Cities on Wednesday when I normally go. Talked to my DH about going out to eat sometime while Dakota is here and we decided we'll take her to the casino! They have a buffet every night and that way she can pick out what she wants and even have dessert afterwards. Also, DH has a coupon that if he buys one adult buffet, he gets one free and the price for Dakota is 1/2 an adult price, so it won't even be that expensive. And when you go into this casino, all the machines are on the left and you go to the right to the buffet restaurant. But she's never been in a place like this, so it will be an experience for her. The casino is not huge either.

It's supposed to rain here on Friday, but that will be a good day to go to the rummage sale with her. It's all indoors.

Tonight DH and I watched a Netflix DVD - The Mountain Between Us with Kate Winslet and Idris Elba, very, very good!

Leslie - I hope your day was pleasant!

Happy Tuesday!!

Mema – around here, they say you should pick the corn the same day as you eat it. So during corn season, we always have corn on the cob on Friday night.

We took our car to the car wash on Friday after the canoeing and let them do the vacuuming and windows. DGS still gets a thrill out of going through the car wash – especially looking up through the sunroof.

That’s a very clever idea for a necklace and it’s very pretty, too.

My new glasses that I got a few months ago are green, too. But just the top part. It fades down to clear on the sides and bottom of the lens. It must be one of the new trendy colors.

Leslie – I hope you have a lovely “mini reunion”. Where does your sister live? Far from you?

My mom was a Canadian gal that married a US service man (my dad) just after WWII. And one of my longest friendships is w/ a Canadian woman who is married to an American. When I met her – 30+ years ago, she was w/ her first husband but later divorced and married a second American. We met when our kids were in the church nursery and still meet for lunch once a month or so. Which reminds me, I should call her. She called Wednesday night when I was on another call.

The workshop was nice. They had 3 people speak about their experience as sponsors and then we broke into small groups to read passages from “For Today” and discuss them.

Yesterday I was cooking up a big pot of ratatouille and an Italian sausage casserole to use up the zucchini and eggplant from the farm share. I thought I had a couple of cans of tomatoes but the multi pack only had two left and one was badly dented. I asked DH to go to the store and grab me a couple more cans than then I thought about my garden. I went out and picked 2 pounds of plum tomatoes which is what I needed for the recipes. They were not really bright red – more like the gentle red you see on grocery store tomatoes, but I picked them anyway. They actually tasted very good even though they weren’t 100% ripe.

We’re having the some days of cooler weather. Such a relief from the heat. I’ve got DS’s dogs today so I’ll get a good walk this morning. Tomorrow DGS will be here to start his last week of camp. By the time we get back from vacation, camp will be over. I haven’t even thought about what we’ll do on those days before he starts school.

36.5 pounds gone, 17.5 more pounds is my 2020 goal.

There's a couple in our church who have a farm and he grows corn, so he told DH and I to stop over after church and he would give us some. We had some of it for supper tonight and it was very good. When we got there, he told us he just picked it - so you talk about fresh picked corn!

I vacuumed out my car today and cleaned the inside and trunk and did the windows. We have a lot of sand up here, so it gets on the floor of the car easily.

We have rock "paths" from the back yard to the front yard and even though there is a border to keep the rocks in the path, there are always some that seem to "jump" into the grass, so I went around and raked all of those back into the pathway. Those paths look nice, but they are kind of a pain. So I didn't get my laundry done, but will probably do that tomorrow.

My sister sent me my b-day present yesterday and she got me 2 necklaces -

This one is a pendant with my initial on it. Not sure if you can see that or not. It's very pretty.

And this one is also a necklace with Sister spelled out in Morse Code with the beads and bars. I have never seen anything like that.

She usually finds unique gifts. They live near a very "touristy" city so they have a lot of unique shops.

Then I thought I should post a picture of me with my new "green" glasses!!

I took a chance when I ordered these because I order online so there's no trying on ahead of time. But I've been ordering glasses now for several years, so I know the size I need, but wasn't sure about the color. I usually have had red glasses, but I wanted to change things up a bit! I'm really starting to like them a lot!

Leslie - When I find out I've lived in the same place as someone, or have been somewhere where they would have gone, I wonder if we would have run into each other, but just not have known it. You and I could have been shopping at the same place. Where I live now up in WI, we live down the road from a camp that I used to go to when I was a kid. So, I know my parents were driving me on the same road that I now use a gazillion times and we would have driven right past the road that turns into our cabin! And unusual "coincidence".
I hope you enjoy your couple of days away!! Sounds like fun. Where will you be going and staying?
When I have my mom's Memorial service it WILL be a reunion for that side of the family. We haven't all been together in years. It will be good to see all of them. My mom was the oldest of 9 children. Only 2 uncles have passed away, besides her now. So it was a big family. Lots of cousins!

Kate - I'm glad you were able to flip the picture! LOL Your DGS sure is a cute little boy!
Did you make the workshop? How was it?
I hope you have a great time on your little mini-vacation!
We're maybe going to get some rain here tomorrow. I hope so, now we really need it!

Enjoy your Monday, ladies!

Mema - the badminton set sounds like a great idea for Dakota! The rummage sale sounds like fun too.
Thanks for your sympathy re: my daughter's death. It will obviously be with me until I die.
I never actually lived in Milwaukee, but I lived all around it, Menomonee Falls, Shorewood, Waukesha, Oconomowoc, from 1970-83. From 1979-81, I actually lived near Stevens Point. So, some of our time did overlap. I ended up in Canada because I'm Canadian, and I was with a very abusive man, so my son and I escaped to go to my brother's house in Toronto until we could get our own place. I have just stayed in Canada since 1983, with the exception of 1993-4 when I lived and worked in OK and TX.

Kate - the photo is great!
It is still pretty warm here, but not as oppressive as it was in July.
I hope you like the workshop today.
I imagine you are looking forward to your trip!

I will also be away for a couple of days at the end of the week. My sister will be here to pick me up Thursday morning, and I will return on Saturday. I may be seeing more relatives there too, so it will be like a mini-reunion; I'm looking forward to that!

I hope you both have lovely Sundays!

Leslie - Hi. Are you getting cooler weather, too?

Mema – isn’t it fun to plan activities for a grand child? I’m going to try that photo again and see if I can get it to post the right way up.

I don’t know how DD and her BF manage their finances except that DD always complains that she pays for everything. But that’s an area that I really try to mind my own business.

There is an OA sponsorship workshop this afternoon so I think I’ll got there after church. It sounds like a good one and sponsors are in short supply around here. I’ve been announcing the workshop at all my meetings and encouraging people to go.

Ahhh! It got down into the upper 60’s last night so I opened all the windows for the first time in a while. Got the house all aired out. We’ve got 3 days of weather in the 70’s this week – lovely. I really need to get out and do some work in the garden. It’s been so hot and humid, I’ve just been running out to pick the tomatoes and cukes and ignoring the weeds. We’ve had so much rain, I haven’t had to water anything. We got more rain in the first half of August than we usually get in the whole month.

Next week is the last week of summer camp for DGS. We’ll be packing up on Friday and flying to NC to see the in-laws early Saturday morning. A short trip – we’ll be coming back Wednesday. DD and DGS will spend Friday night here and DS will drive over in the morning so we only need to take one car to the airport.

Had my meeting today and then stopped at Dollar General in town to get a couple of things. While I was there, I saw they had a little badminton set for cheap, so I bought it for Dakota and I to play when she's up here. Something fun for her to learn.
When I got home DH asked if I would spread fertilizer on the yard - it's a lot of walking so it's much easier for me to do it. I even worked up a little sweat.
I also found out in our little local newspaper that we get every Saturday, that next Friday and Saturday, our town is having a Rummage sale in the Town Hall building. I've never been to it, but have driven by and it's always a huge sale, so I'm going to take Dakota to that. See if she can find anything to buy for herself. I'm hoping that one of the days, we'll take her out for supper either at the pizza place in town or there's a family-type restaurant that DH and I have been to. We'll have to see how it goes.

Leslie - I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. Very tragic. I do agree with you about questioning her shooting right handed when she was left handed. Being a lefty myself, I am somewhat more ambidextrous than the average person, but main things like eating, writing, etc. are all done with my left hand. That would have seemed very suspicious to me, too. It does sound like more could have been done. I don't blame you at all for being so upset with the whole thing.
What year(s) did you live in Milwaukee? I lived there from 1980-1983 and then my husband at the time was transferred to Carol Stream, IL. I did remember you saying you lived there, but I just can't remember when it was. How did you end up in Canada?

Kate - loved the photo! Thank you for sharing. It looks like it was a gorgeous day to be on the lake, too!
My mom's memorial is Saturday, September 8th, so just 3 weeks away. Then 2 weeks later, we have my MIL's memorial service on the 22nd, but I just have to "show up" for that one.
I suppose your DD and her boyfriend keep expenses separate, but does he ever "help" her out? I'm sure it is frustrating for you, but it sounds like you are doing all that you can for now.

Church tomorrow and I will probably do laundry. Have a blessed day!

Mema - I'm glad you only lost $16 at the casino. I haven't been to a casino since I was in Las Vegas a number of years ago. I would take a certain amount, I think $50 was my maximum, but never ended up with a profit. I would win some of the $50 back, so the loss wasn't awful.
I can't stock up a lot on things that would need to go into the freezer; I have only the freezer at the top of my fairly small fridge.
I hope you'll enjoy your time at the fair again this year!
Congrats to your DS for his 1+ year in AA - good for him.
My daughter was 14 when she died of a gunshot wound to the head. She was living with her father and stepmother at the time, and although her death was ruled a suicide, I have never believed that. For one thing, it's extremely unusual for a woman/girl to use a gun (especially in a house with lots of alcohol and tranquillizers, as that house had), and even more so, it would be almost unheard of for a girl so young to shoot herself, but my main quarrel is that she was left-handed, but shot in the right side of her head. When I told the investigating officer that, he said that her father told them she was ambidextrous, which was NOT true; however, he said the case was closed and could only be reopened if I came up with new evidence. I think they didn't do an adequate investigation at the time, so I've always been very upset about the whole situation.
I didn't explain very well about nursing/medical school. I went into nursing school right out of high school, when I was 17. I met my future husband when I was 19. We had an off/on relationship for a couple of years, and finally married when I was 21, after I was an RN. It was after I'd had my kids that I decided I wanted to go to med school, so I had registered for some courses when I was either 28 or 29; that was when I got pneumonia. I hope that's a little clearer! Oh, my husband was a professor at Marquette University in Milwaukee then. We had good insurance. I think he expected me to care for the kids and run the house, but I was much too sick, so he hired a young couple who were his students to come and take care of things until I 'came to' again.

Kate - I don't think I've ever 'got over' my daughter's death either. I think it's been made harder because I disagree with the finding of suicide.
I'm very glad you had a good time in the canoe! I love the photo!
I'm happy for you and your DGS that he does have one pair of shoes that he likes.
I'm really sorry your DD has so many expenses from that accident! I know it's frustrating for you that she won't accept financial help. I'm glad that she is at least allowing you to help with your DGS's expenses. I know what it's like to have a shrinking savings account.

I hope you both have good days!

Mema – congrats to your DS on his anniversary. 12 Steppers do share a unique outlook on life. Nice to be able to share your experience, strength and hope w/ your DS.

Remind me when the memorial service is. I know you mentioned the date but I’ve forgotten.

Leslie – nice to have a good selection for meal planning. I know that you mean about creating space in the fridge. When we get our fruit and veggies from the CSA, the fridge is filled to overflowing. In the peak of the growing season – August and September – I can’t always get everything in there.

I remember you posted about your DD before. It’s hard for a parent to lose a child. I lost a brother in his teens and I don’t think my dad ever recovered. My mom did, but she lived another 30 years after his death.

Both my parents had colon cancer so I started getting the scopes earlier than standard.

We had a good time out in the canoe. They gave us only 2 paddles so we passed them back and forth and took turns paddling. DGS is pretty good w/ a paddle – except for the times when he stroked backwards to turn us or he wanted to see the ‘wake’ so he just dragged the paddle in the water. LOL

Shoe shopping was quick b/c DGS just glanced at all the shoes and said he didn’t like any of them. We went to the second store in the mall and the same thing happened. I asked what it was he wanted and told him I didn’t think we’d be able to find it but he was determined. I told him we could drive to one more store. I suggested we could get 2 pairs of shoes and asked him if he had seen anything that would be a good ‘second best’. He immediately led me back to the first store and grabbed a pair. I found his size and he said they were just right so we bought them. The trip to the 3rd store was a bust since they had very few shoes and nothing like what he wanted. At least he ended up w/ one good pair for school next month.

DD’s car repairs were estimated at $650 and her deductible is $1000 so it’s all out of pocket. But she also needs a car for her work – she drives a couple hundred miles a week to visit clients – so she will have the expense of renting a car. And b/c she was at fault, she’ll be paying a surcharge on her insurance for the next 5 years. Sigh! I wish she could feel comfortable w/ accepting financial help from us. I convinced her to let us pay for half of DGS’s summer camp bill and buy his back to school stuff, but she’s still in difficulties. She was just barely making ends meet before all the medical expenses. Doctors, specialists, and PT at $40/ a pop has taken her past her limit. Her savings account is slowly shrinking.

DH and I went to the casino for dinner and then did some gambling afterwards. I lost $16, so that wasn't too bad. The machines seemed like they didn't want to pay anything tonight for some reason. I played 4 different ones, too. That's unusual, but I did get $10 for my b-day month and can use that anytime in the next 30 days!

Tomorrow I'll go to my meeting and not sure what else is on the agenda, but I'm sure something will come up.

Leslie - It's nice to have a lot of groceries in the house for meal planning. I usually have plenty of stuff (staples, meat and what not) because of living so far from Walmart where I do most of my shopping. Our local Kwik Trip which is a convenience store/gas station runs a lot of specials on milk, eggs, butter and other items so that's always handy and I pass that every time I go to my meeting.
When I lived in St. Paul if the wind was blowing just right, we could hear the fireworks from the MN State Fair after the Grandstand concerts each evening and we lived about 8 miles away. Speaking of the fair, I'll be going in just over a week, the 28th of August. My aunt and I always go together and this year my DS will be joining us since he has Tuesday off work, so it should be a fun day!
Obituary's are expensive these days. When I put the first obit in right after my mom passed I included her picture and I think it was only like 6 lines, but it cost $245.00! This one will not have the picture, but will probably be about the same price because of the length.
Yes, my DS is in AA - he celebrated his 1 year anniversary April 2nd!! I'm very happy and proud of him. It's actually nice that we have that in common - we can talk about a lot of things and I can "help" him by sharing what I think and have done and he can relate.
I'm so sorry about your daughter - how old was she? That is something no parent should ever have to go thru.
I'm sorry about what happened to you in nursing school and missing so much because of your pneumonia. What did you husband do for a living that he didn't want you to go to the hospital?

Kate - So sorry to hear about your DD's accident. Thank goodness no one was hurt. I imagine even something like that would not be good for your DD and her disease. And how nice that you could keep DGS so she could take care of the insurance.
Did you all get your canoeing in? And how did the shoe shopping go?

Hope you both have a wonderful, relaxing Saturday!!

emoticon

I am running way behind with things today. I've been very tired, and have had 2 short naps. I haven't even done any reading yet. I got a huge order from the pharmacy yesterday, and there was still one refill which had to be sent this morning! I also got a large grocery order, so I've been busy putting things away, and creating more space in the fridge! I'm looking forward to all the meals I can plan now.
I absolutely agree with you, Kate, that 'respect' shouldn't have been based on a test score, but that husband looked down his nose at me for being 'just a nurse'. I was in nursing school when I met him. I had really planned to go to med school, but after I got registered, and had child care sorted out for the kids, who were 1 and 2 at the time, and attended the first week of classes, I got a very bad case of pneumonia for which the doctor wanted me in the hospital, but my husband insisted I stay home. I was useless because all I could do was sleep, and when I was awake, I was delirious. By the time I had recovered, I had missed too much of the semester, so I decided to put it off for a bit, but for one reason or another, I never did get back to it, and once we divorced, I needed to work hard as a nurse to support my kids and myself.

Mema - I'm glad you've had your colonoscopy. My last one was 4-5 years ago, and there were several polyps which were removed. I'll be curious about the polyp situation this time.
I did get reading done yesterday while waiting for my deliveries. It's still very humid here today, and it's supposed to rain to clear the air, but that hasn't happened yet. It's a big weekend here, called Summerfolk. There are lots of musical acts, and craft booths, and food and beer tents. I've never been to it. The cost of admission seems steep to me. I can't remember how much it is, but definitely more than I'm willing to pay. If the traffic is not too loud, and the wind blows the right way, we can sometimes hear a bit of the music.
I'm glad you've decided on a florist, and have written the obituary. I remember writing the one for my daughter, and it was expensive to get published.
That's very sad that the man in AA was killed. Is your son also in AA?
I'm very happy that Dakota is so excited about coming for her visit with you!

Kate - I have no family history of colon cancer, but I've also outlived everyone except one aunt and one grandmother.
I'm very sorry your DD was in an accident! It was a good idea for her to go home; no doubt she was shaken.
Your plans to go canoeing sound wonderful! I hope it went well! Good luck getting the shoes!

Now I think I'll have my tea, and do a bit of reading.

I hope you're both having good days.

Mema – nice that you’re getting things checked off your list for the memorial service. I’m glad that Dakota is looking forward to time w/ you. I’m sure you’ll have a blast. And it’s just for a few days so the excitement won’t wear off before she’s home again.

Leslie – I have a strong family history of colon cancer so I get the colonoscopy every 3 -5 years. You’re right that the prep is the awful part.
Respect should never be dependent on the results of a test – although it is kind of nice to know that your brain is in the 1%.

DD called when she was on her way to pick up DGS. She had been in an accident. Not serious but it was her fault and she is so worried about the cost of repairing her car and the increase in her insurance costs.

Since she was closer to her home than ours, I suggested she head straight home and let DGS spend the night here. It would have taken her more than an hour to get here for the pick up and then home. I figured that much driving on top of the stress of the accident was not what she needed. Getting home and talking w/ the insurance company was enough to do w/o having to care for DGS, too. She had to be at an 8 AM appointment this morning anyway, so she would have had to be here to drop him off this morning at 7. This will give her an easier time this morning, too.

We have a library pass for a local boating place this morning. We'll go out to breakfast and then canoeing on a local lake. DH has to be back at work in the afternoon for a meeting so DGS and I will go out and do some back to school school shopping. He needs new shoes.

Leslie - my DH has to have both of those "scopes" done next year. I had my colonoscopy last year I believe and I know what you mean about the prep - it's awful. The procedure is a piece of cake!
Speaking of cake - I may do something like: Always in our thoughts, Forever in our hearts. My sister thought if we did: In Memory of Yvonne - to use her given name because she was also called: Auntie Sis (by family), Irish (at work), Grandma (by her granddaughter), Mema (by her grandson - my son) and Great-May by my DS's kids! So that's a whole lotta names!! Oh, and Mom by my sister and I. emoticon
WOW! That's is very impressive about the Psych Exam results. So is that when you decided to go into nursing?
Hope you got in a lot of reading.
And I hope your weather cools down for you. It was pretty warm here, and just a little humid. But will be 55 tonight.

Kate - I know what you mean about having a photo on a cake - that would seem weird. I also thought about a Bible verse. When my sister and I meet with the pastor, we'll get it figured out then.

I called a local florist in the Twin Cities today after looking at their flower arrangements online. The gal was very helpful and their prices were not totally outrageous! Other places I looked at for flowers were running well over $150 and higher! It's amazing how much places can charge when it's for certain types of engagements. But this is a family run business that has been in business for many years, so I'm pretty sure I will use them.

I also cleaned my house today and wrote the long obituary to put in the paper before the memorial service, (this one will include the preceded by's and survived by's, so I got quite a bit accomplished today.

Tomorrow DH wants to go to the casino for the Fish dinner special which I will have - but he has Liver and Onions. So, that might be fun. At least I won't have to cook!

I talked to my DS tonight. There was a very bad accident on a major freeway in Minneapolis just a couple of days ago. A "box" truck (not sure what that is, but that was the term the news used) crossed over the median, which was steel cables into oncoming traffic and killed one man and injured 4 others. The man that was killed was a 40 year old married man, father of 2 (8 yrs and 14 yrs) and was just celebrating 1 year in AA. My son had just spoken with him a few nights before the accident! It was awful. The club he belongs to is having a One Year Anniversary celebration this Saturday. My son is going and this man was supposed to go as well. Very sad.

On a lighter note - he told me he talked to Dakota about coming up here to stay a few days with "May" and Grandpa and she was very excited!! She did ask who was going to be up here and my son told her it was just going to be the 3 of us and she thought that would be fun! I was so glad to hear that! I'm sure she's not quite sure what to expect. This will be the first time she had done anything like this. Been away from home by herself (w/out mom and dad). But she and I are very close, so I'm sure she'll be just fine. We're going to bake brownies and make waffles one morning for breakfast - I have a "Frozen" waffle maker and swim if it's warm enough. And I'd either like to take her to a movie or shopping in one of the little towns.

I heard the news about Aretha Franklin, too. I didn't know she had pancreatic cancer. Now I'm waiting to hear about 2 more "celebrities" passing away. My mom used to say they always die in 3's and for the most part she was right.

Have a Fantastic Friday!!

emoticon

Mema - thank you!
The 'scopes' will be an endoscopy (gastroscopy) and colonoscopy. I am already dreading the prep, but know the event itself will not be difficult.
I'm glad the plaque is being done, but sorry you've had to go through so much, and that you never received an apology - that's awful!
We are still having muggy weather today, but there are supposed to be storms tonight and tomorrow, and then apparently the weekend will be beautiful.
I remember 'I Can See Clearly Now' - it was popular just before I left my first husband!
I really don't know what should be on the cake; I don't think there's been cake at the memorials I've attended. My first thought was to have her first name, and under that, the years of her birth - death. But I really don't know what's suitable. I like Kate's suggestion, 'In Memory Of', and like your 'We Love You'.

Kate - I also like UPS or FedEx, or other couriers that will come back, but if I'm not home for the post office, I'm just out of luck.
My ex-husband was so reluctant to acknowledge that I had a brain until I was given the Ohio State Psychological Exam when I was considering going to medical school. It is not an IQ test, but a test of mental capacity and predictor of success in academia - I scored in the 99th percentile - the highest score that psychologist had ever seen. So, once my husband realized I was in the top 1% of the population, he finally granted me some respect!

Speaking of respect, I just found out about an hour ago that Aretha Franklin has died - very sad.
I have ordered meds and groceries today, so they will be delivered this afternoon. In between things, I'll be reading of course.

Have a great day!

Mema – it’s funny how some people are so resistant to saying the words “I’m sorry.” I had a waitress totally mess up an order and she gave me lots of excuses but never an apology. If she had just said “I’m sorry.” she would have gotten her tip. I hope the girl follows through now that she’s had her feet held to the fire.

Yes, I do remember that song – I can see clearly now – it’s a good one.

You’re a young thing, aren’t you? Only 57! at least for a few more days.

For the cake, “In memory of..” or a short Bible verse. I’ve seen photos transferred to cake tops, too, but cutting into a photo of a person at a memorial seems a bit weird.

Leslie – nice to see your post. Sounds like you’ve been busy. Glad you got all your errands done.

Our post office doesn’t try a second time, either but I can walk to the post office so it’s OK. Any important packages come by FedEx or UPS and they will try a second time.

Funny about the chess games and beating your husband. The game takes a certain type of strategic thinking. I don’t play very well b/c I don’t think a couple moves ahead.

Leslie - Glad your back!! I missed you.
Glad you got a lot of errands done, that's always a good feeling, I know.
I don't think our post office makes a 2nd attempt either on things. But very rarely do we have to be home for most of our deliveries. It's usually stuff DH and I order online.
What "scopes" are you having done?
I have heard more on the plaque for my mom - but I wrote a complaint email to the General Manager and Funeral Director and low, and behold that evening I got a phone call from the gal who was supposed to be doing the plaque telling me she sent me an email with the template! I was right in the middle of making dinner, but ran upstairs to look at the email to give my approval. But no apology for not calling me back or anything - amazing! I have worked in sales, customer service jobs most of my life and that would have been the first thing out of my mouth if I hadn't called back. But that rarely happened with me - I was always returning calls as soon as I could. She did have to make an adjustment on it, but it will be OK. I did ask when it would be finished and she thought the end of the month. I asked if she would let me know and she says (get this..) "Oh, yes, I was going to keep you informed on the progress" LOL Anyway, at least it's in the works now. But I wouldn't have very nice things to say about the company if anyone asked me.
I'm so glad we get the Colorado peaches here because they are predictable. So sweet and so juicy!
We finally broke our heat wave last night, it cooled down and today even tho' it was sunny and around 80+, the humidity was very low, so it was a beautiful day. We're now going into a stretch of warm, sunny days but cool nights - lows in the 50's!! I like that!

Kate - I wondered why I didn't see a post from you yesterday, but I had forgotten about your eye procedure. I'm glad it all went well. When you said you can see clearly now, it reminded me of that song from a long time ago. Do you remember that?
My birthday is on the 21st of this month, so next Tuesday - I'll be 58!

Went to my meeting today, it was on resentments - good topic for us AA'ers. I still get them, but now have the "tools" to work them out.

Tomorrow I will clean the house and then I need to make a check list for my mom's memorial service coming up - I've got to put in a full obituary the week before, figure out approximately how many people will come so I order a big enough cake. Question for either one of you - what do you put on a cake for a memorial service? As far as words? I know I can put We love you and Miss you or something like that - any other ideas?

I've got to call the Cremation place in the Twin Cities where my mom and dad initially signed their contract and make an appt. with them after my sister and I see the Pastor to get In Memoriam cards done. The church will print the service bulletins, but not those. They did a nice job for my dad when he passed. A lot of little things, but if I don't make a list, I'm bound to forget something.

Hope you both have a Thankful Thursday!

I apologize for having missed several days! I had a very busy week last week, and this week, I've had good intentions of writing, but I don't know where the time keeps going!
I will be having my scopes in November. I'll be glad to get them over with.
My friend Diane took me out Friday and I got lots of errands done. I so appreciate her help!
I missed my car for the first time this week. When I was at the exercise class on Monday, Canada Post tried to deliver a package. They do not make a second attempt, so if you've missed the delivery, it's up to you to get to the postal station to pick it up. Fortunately, my housekeeper was here yesterday, so I asked her to get it for me instead of mopping my floors. I wouldn't have wanted to impose on Diane again, and all the other options I thought of would be costly and/or time consuming.

Mema - How great that Dakota will be able to visit you at the end of the month! I'm sorry about your DIL thinking it isn't 'fair'. Oh dear, I'm sorry your plans were changed! Is it 'fair' that she is going to the concert?? Sorry, I'm being sarcastic. I see you were thinking the same thing! I'm glad she's still able to come!
I'm sorry about the frustration over getting that plaque! Have you heard any more about it?
Those peaches sound good. I think most of our peaches are local (Ontario) - some are delicious and some not -it's hard to predict.

Kate - You certainly have lots of cucumbers!! How nice that you'll also get the ones on your side of the fence.
I'm happy for you that the trip with your DGS went so well. Good for him for recognizing so many of the figures. I'm glad he enjoyed the disco ball too. And good for him for playing chess. I had a funny experience with chess. My first husband, who had had many chess lessons from a master, gave me a couple of lessons and then by the 3rd or 4th time we played, I started beating him - he stopped playing with me! I actually haven't played since then.
I'm very happy for you that the laser surgery went well, and you were home so quickly. I'm surprised they let you leave on your own. Here, after every procedure, someone has to come for you; I can't leave even in a taxi. I hope Diane will be able to come for me when I have the scopes.

I have been reading quite a bit, and it is still pretty warm but not so oppressive, thank goodness. I think we'll get rain tonight.

I hope you're both having good days!

Mema – we don’t get Colorado peaches here. Ours come from NJ or Georgia.

So glad that you’ll be able to have Dakota there for a short visit.

And Happy Birthday! When is it?

There was a lot of rain – almost 3 inches in our area – but two towns over, nearer the coast, they got 8 inches in one day and had major flooding. DS was supposed to be at a fund raiser there that day and it got canceled b/c so many roads were closed.

The laser surgery went well yesterday and I can already see clearly out of that eye. I caught the 5:40 train and then walked up to the surgical center. I got there at 6:20 for my 6:30 appt. By 7:30 I was all done and ready to go. I walked back to the train station and caught the 7:55 express train back home. That kind of travel is so much less stressful than driving in traffic and hunting for a parking space. And cheaper, too, now that I’m can buy a half price senior ticket.

Strange thing, though, when I got home all I wanted to do is just crash. I guess I was more worried/frightened that I was letting myself know. Anyway, I spent the rest of the day in my recliner reading. Last night I went to bed at 8:30 and slept a good solid 8 hours. I woke up to DH bringing up the coffee.

About the eye surgery – when you have cataracts done, they slip your own lens out of the little membrane or capsule that it sits in and put the new plastic lens in it’s place. In about 20% of the cases, the back part of the capsule starts to thicken and becomes opaque so your vision is cloudy. They use a laser blaster to poke dozens of little holes in the capsule so you can see through it.

Kate - one thing about the Colorado peaches is that they are always predictable. In all the years that I've been buying them, I have never had a bad one. That's why I will only purchase those. So you may want to try them. But they only come in season in August.
Oh, and I did ask DS about Dakota coming up next week and he said that would be fine!! Woo Hoo!! I will drive down next Wednesday afternoon, stay the night and then Dakota and I will drive back up here on Thursday morning. Then on Sunday after we go to church, she and I will drive back to her house. I'm thinking of offering to buy dinner Wednesday evening to kind of smooth things over and to celebrate mine and DIL's b-days! emoticon
Wow, you guys got a lot of rain. We're getting to the point now where we could use rain with all this hot weather. Things dry out fast.
I hope it does clear up for you for your canoe trip. Who's going and where do you go?

I finished my laundry but not my ironing. I'll have to do that later this week. Tomorrow DH and I are going into town - Rice Lake - the bigger small town. He's ordered a few things that he has to pick up. And we'll eat lunch at the China buffet place. They serve Egg Foo Yung only at lunch time and I love it. So, I'm OK in going there this time! LOL

Hope you stay dry, Kate!!

Have a great day!

Leslie – are you getting a lot of reading done? Are you still having hot muggy weather?

Mema – I find all types of peaches to be unpredictable. Sometimes I’ll get a batch that are lovely, sweet and juicy and other times they’re either sour or pithy.

Sorry you had a headache but I’m glad it didn’t last. I used to get migraines that lasted for days but rarely get other types of headaches. My DH has a drawerful of sweatshirts and t shirts on top of those hanging in the closet. I try to get him to go through them every couple years.

How disappointing that your DGD can’t come up. I would think she’s too young for a concert. I know that’s not something I would plan for my DGS at age 7 even though he loves music and dancing.

We had a weekend of pouring rain - a third of our usual monthly rain fall in 2 days - and more rain predicted for the rest of the week. After being stuck in a hot humid weather pattern for most of July, it's nice to have slightly cooler weather. But a week of rain is not much fun either. I hope it clears out by Friday when we have a canoe trip planned.

Kate - I think I've seen those kind of peaches, but I've never tried them. Are they sweet and juicy like the Colorado peaches?
Sorry your DGS didn't sleep well. That does make for a long day.

I woke up with a bad headache, so I skipped church. But by the afternoon I felt better. I picked some more blackberries and sorted thru some more clothes. I had forgotten to go thru all my sweatshirts and found I could give away 15 and I still have about 20 more!! Sheesh! Didn't realize I had so many. And so many that I don't really wear anymore.

Tomorrow I have to go to the Post office in town and mail my sister a few certified copies of my mom's death certificate. My sister was the beneficiary on the account where my mom used to work (at a bank) and they need a copy of her death certificate to release the check to her. It's not a lot, but it's money we wouldn't otherwise have.

One more day of hot weather here, then our big cool down! I can't wait.

Oh, and did I tell you I got a text from my DS saying that Dakota can't come up during the time I wanted her to. She's going to the Taylor Swift concert with her mom. So I'm thinking of maybe getting her BEFORE I would go down instead of taking her with me when I was coming home. It would mean 2 extra trips for me to the Twin Cities (130 miles each way), so I'll have to see. I'm going to talk with DH about it and see if I should try and pursue that or just leave it go for this summer. But I was soooo disappointed.

And when DS told me why she couldn't come up, my first thought was - Well, that's not very fair to Ryan that she goes to the concert! He's not going. emoticon (But I know that's not the way to think.)

Hope all is well, Leslie!!

Have a Marvelous Monday!!

Mema – we’re getting local peaches in our farm share now. I love the little donut peaches. Have you seen them?

Yes, DGS does play chess and he’s pretty good. He beats me sometimes. The little boy and grandfather at the next table didn’t know the rules and were just making things up as they went along. DGS tried leaning over to tell them the rules, but then he gave up when I told him they were just having fun.

DGS spent the night but he didn’t sleep well – which means I didn’t either. He was up at 1:30 b/c he was cold and needed another blanket. After that he was tapping me on the shoulder every 30 – 40 minutes until we gave up at 5 and got up. Sigh! It’s going to be a sleepy day. He’s usually a good sleeper.

Went to my meeting today. And on my way home one of the local grocers in Shell Lake advertised "Colorado peaches" and I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them so I stopped in after my meeting. Well, they had 2 different labels for the peaches up above them and there was no sticker on the Colorado peaches. I have always found they usually have the Colorado sticker on them. And when I picked up the peaches to smell them, they didn't even have a smell. So I didn't get any. But another grocery store in another town - opposite direction is advertising them, too so I may have to stop by there.

It is such a short season for Colorado peaches, too. So I'll have to get as many as I can eat!

Then in the afternoon I finished mowing. I only had a 1/2 hour left but I was sweating more today than I did yesterday. But it was more humid and it was hotter, too. We are going to have this hot weather until Monday, then we're going from 92 high to 77 high. Quite a change. And our nights will be in the 50's!! emoticon

Kate - so glad your DGS enjoyed the museum and the train ride. Dakota was the same way as far as moving to different seats! Too funny.
That is funny about him saying Michael Jackson was a man! Later on, he did take on a more feminine look. And you know, kids are so up front about asking questions and when you think of it, it makes perfect sense to them.
Love the picture of him playing chess! Does he really know how? That is one game I could never really get the hang of. It always amazes me when kids can play it when they are so young. My son did the same thing.

Hope you have a lovely Sunday!!

Mema – sorry you’re having such an issue w/ the plaque. Seems like they over promised and are having trouble delivering. Still, it’s so hard to have this kind of hassle when you’re already dealing w/ grief.

We haven’t gotten down into the 60’s at night in weeks, but we’re supposed to be upper 60s for the next 3 nights so I’ll have the windows open at night.

The trip w/ DGS worked out very well. He enjoyed the train ride and liked moving around to different seats on the way back. The train was too full on the way down to move around.

He recognized more of the wax figures than I thought he would. The first one was George Washington and he went running up to it – “Look, it’s George Washington!” He put his arms up and gave a hug to Martin Luther King, Jr.

Funny moments, too. He did some dancing when we got to the music section and there was a disco ball. He said, “You know I’ve never seen a real disco ball before.” And when we saw Michael Jackson he said, “I thought Michael Jackson was a man.” That lead to some interesting conversations on the train later on. DH showed him some photos before surgery and DGS wanted to know why someone would dislike the way they looked and want to change it. How to explain that??

The museum was pretty small and we were out of there well before lunch. DH and DGS played chess at the market place before we had lunch and afterwards we watch an escape artist performance before heading to the train.

DGS wanted pizza for lunch so we got one from one of the food stands. I got a Greek Salad from a stand nearby.

Kate - I'm excited to know how your "adventure" went with DGS. Did he enjoy the train and the museum? What about you? Where did you end up having lunch?
It was hot here today, but our humidity level was way down as yours was so it did help. Although we still have our A/C on and probably will thru the weekend. But DH turned it off last night as we got down in the upper 50's so it was very comfortable sleeping. It won't get down that low tonight, though.

I did get part of the lawn mowed today and was sweating a ton! Even tho' it was low humidity it was still hot! I'll do the rest tomorrow and then spread the lime on Sunday. The lime helps to reduce the acidity in our soil. We have so many oak trees on our property and that brings the acidity up.

I'm a little frustrated - when I had my mom cremated in TX, the funeral home said I would be getting a survey (from another separate company) and that once I filled that out they would send me this VERY nice plaque. It's more like a picture - about 11x14x1 and glossy finish. It will have a picture of my mom and the house I grew up in and then her birth date and death date and names she was called - Mom, Grandma, Mema and Great-May. Well, I've never received the survey which I was supposed to get in 6-8 weeks. I called after 8 weeks, they said to wait another 2 weeks. Nothing. Another call and was told to wait another 2 weeks. Nothing. I called again and told the gal that I didn't really care whether or not I got the survey, but wanted the plaque that they promised. She assured me that the template would be started and they would email me a copy to approve. I waited another 2 weeks and did not receive anything, so I called on Friday, August 8th and the gal I talked to this time said she was the one who actually does the template (different woman from whom I had been talking to) and she assured me she would start the template on Monday as it was late in the day on that Friday and send me an email. I have not received anything so I called this morning. She was with a family but the receptionist took my name and number and said she would give it to Sandra as soon as she finished with the family. I never got a call back!

If I don't hear from her tomorrow I will either call to speak with the funeral director or email my complaint to them. Soooooo disappointing! emoticon I was hoping that I would have this so I could display it at my mom's Memorial Service, but that was not really the reason for getting it in the first place. I just want it done since it was something they offered and promised.

Leslie - Let us know how everything is going for you!

Enjoy your Saturday!!

Leslie – hope you’re getting a lot of reading done. Is your weather any better? Or still hot and sticky?

Mema – glad your trip was successful and productive.

I got our train tickets yesterday – half price senior tickets! This morning we’ll head down to Boston to see the Wax museum. It wasn’t there when our kids were little so I’m not sure what it’s like. I got the pass from our library to give us free admission. Nice that we’re not spending a lot when I don’t know if he’ll like it.

We’ll do the museum in the morning and have lunch somewhere. I’m not sure where we’ll eat but we’ll be walking by one of Boston’s tourist areas – with a giant food court.

Then we’ll come home on the train after lunch. DD needs to pick him up early b/c she has a doctor’s appt. at 4PM.

I’m so glad that the humidity has gone down. Although it will still be in the mid 80’s, it won’t be oppressively hot like it’s been for the last weeks.

Kate - thank you for affirming what I was feeling about being "fair". And it makes so much sense that the kids would get different things because like your two, brother and sister, that's what I have in my 2 grand kids, brother and sister. They are so very different.
I'm glad you had a quieter day since you'll have a busy day tomorrow going to the museum and riding the train. I hope your DGS enjoys it all. Where will you go for lunch?
Wow, that's a lot of cucumbers! I've had refrigerator pickles before and they are delish!! Mmmm
How lucky for you that you can keep the cucumbers that grow on your side of the fence from the neighbors.
Tomatoes, I'm not a big fan of. I can eat them cooked in something, I'm just not a fan of raw. So my BLT's are just BL's! LOL But I love those!

My solo trip to Rice Lake was good. Got everything I needed. I was even able to shop in the small mall they have there, too. The Herberger's is closing so it doesn't leave a lot of shops left. But I went into Bath and Body and Christopher and Banks, but didn't buy a thing.

Tomorrow I may mow the grass. DH wants me to spread lime pellets on the yard but it needs to be cut first. I may just mow tomorrow and spread lime on Saturday after my meeting.

Leslie - I hope you are getting in lots of reading!

Have a fantastic Friday!!

Mema – my mom always tried to be “fair” w/ us kids and it ended up w/ a lot of hurt feelings. All us kids kept comparing what we had gotten and feeling like things weren’t quite even. I told my two that I would not always be fair. Life isn’t fair. I would give them what they needed and wanted if I could and because they were very different people, they would be getting different things from me.

My DD called yesterday morning to say she was sick again and staying home so it turned into a quieter day for me, too. Had a meeting, electrolysis appt. and then home for the afternoon w/ the dogs.

I picked another 8 cucumber from the garden. Need to make another couple jars of refrigerator pickles. I'm finding it very hard to use up 2 dozen cukes every week but it looks like the vines are close to being done bearing. Our next door neighbor has regular cukes (not pickling like mine) that are about to start bearing. Part of the vine is over the fence on our side and we get to keep what grows on that side.

I have been picking cherry tomatoes for about 2 weeks. The roma tomatoes are just starting to turn pink and I have a gazillion of them.

Well, I was up until 4:30 am today! I couldn't fall asleep because I had talked with my DS earlier in the evening. He called to let me know that Dakota will be coming up here at the end of the month!! I'm very excited. emoticon But he said something that made me ask if there was a problem. I guess my DIL didn't think it was fair because Ryan couldn't come and she thinks I favor Dakota over Ryan. I told my DS that it had nothing to do with favoring one over the other, but with age. Dakota has now been coming up to the cabin on a consistent basis so she's really starting to enjoy her time. She's 2 years older and that makes a huge difference. I also told him when Ryan turns 6 he'll get his turn to come by himself.

But it bothered me all night. My DIL seems to think everything in life should be "fair". Well when you do that, it's really unfair because not everyone is going to get what they want. You can't please everyone, every time. And I told DS there are advantages of being the "oldest", but there are advantages to being the "youngest" too.

So, I'm hoping I can sleep tonight since I'll be going Rice Lake tomorrow. I only have a few stores to go to, so I'm also going to stop in at Bath and Body Works. I've ordered some of the hand soaps online so I didn't know if I would like the scent, so tomorrow I'll go and smell other scents to see what I like.

Went to my meeting today - it was smaller today for some reason. I've also decided that I'm going try and go most Saturdays. I did that last year and this year I've only been going once/week. I'd like another meeting in my week.

Kate - I like to support local businesses as well and we do that as much as we can, but I just can't justify paying double or sometimes triple the price for all of my groceries. And this particular grocery store is "known" for that. I've heard that from several of the people who live in Spooner. And since I'm able to drive to the bigger city that makes more sense to me. And really, that "bigger" city is just a bigger town. When they opened the Walmart in that town, it really helped their local economy not only by providing jobs, but more people were able to buy more things because of the low prices. And it drew more people from the Twin Cities to stop there because it's on the way to many cabins all up in this area.
We had a hot day here, too but it was breezy so it wasn't too bad. And our place actually stayed pretty cool. We closed our windows and shut our blinds this morning to keep all the cool air from last night inside.
I'm hearing rumbles of thunder in the distance and it's a real funny shade of green outside so I'm not sure if we're going to have a storm or not.

Leslie - I hope you had a good day and got in lots of reading and stayed cool!

Have a Thankful Thursday!

Leslie – the naturalists are saying that the coyotes around here are actually cross breeds w/ some dog and a bit of wolf thrown in. They’re worried that the dog heritage is making them more comfortable around people. I’ve heard of people in this area losing cats and small dogs to coyotes.

When my DH started making those long trips we went out an bought him more clothes. His dresser drawers are really packed full right after laundry day.

Mema – sorry your road trip wasn’t a complete success. Enjoy your solo trip.

When we had a smaller grocery store here in town (walking distance) I used to shop there even though it was a bit more expensive just b/c I appreciated having it there. I guess most people were willing to drive farther for the cheaper prices, b/c it finally had to close. I’m a big supporter of local businesses.

Yes, the train is the commuter train. It runs every 20 minutes or so during commuter hours but only every 2 hours in the middle of the day so we’ll have to time our return more carefully. When my kids were little, I was still going to a church in Boston so I would put my DS in a baby backpack and my DD in a stroller and take the train to the mid-week women’s meeting. The station is just 2 blocks from my house. And it is a slow train b/c it makes 6 stops in the 12 miles between here and Boston.

Another day of hot (90 degrees) weather here. DS is bringing the dogs over and DD will drop off DGS. I’ve got a meeting in the morning and some errands to do but mostly I’ll be hanging out in the air conditioning. They’re saying it will still be hot but it will be less humid and oppressive on Friday when we’re planning to have our outing w/ DGS. Whew!

DH's day didn't start out very well - he had a couple of things go wrong and he was stiff and sore this morning, so the road trip was "OK." emoticon He was a bit crabby. We just hit the stores he needed - Menard's, Harbor Freight Tools, etc. We did eat at TX Roadhouse and that was very good! He was in a better mood by then, so that helped. LOL On our way home, we were crossing the bridge from Duluth to Superior, going over Lake Superior and it was sunny and about 5:00 pm, but when we hit the middle of the bridge it was all foggy! You could not see out the sides of the windows except for the bridge structure. It felt like we were going thru a tunnel. It was strange. And when we got over the bridge, there was no more fog. But Lake Superior is the coldest lake of the Great Lakes, I believe and with the sunny day, maybe that's what caused it.

On Thursday I'll be going to Rice Lake by MYSELF! It's much easier that way (for both of us - haha)

Tomorrow is my meeting and I may stop at one of the store's in town there. A local grocery store - they have some things on sale, otherwise they are too expensive. That's the bad part of living in a small town. If you can't get to the bigger cities to buy things, you end up paying a lot more for things, especially groceries. So I always go to the bigger city for my groceries, but if this one runs something on sale, then I'll get those things.

Leslie - The recipe that I tried for the muffins was a new recipe, but I'll keep using that one - it's a good recipe that you could add in any fruit.
Did you get in a lot of reading?
I'm like you in that I've got enough undies and clothes that I can easily go two weeks, but I prefer to get my laundry done every week.

Kate - The train that you'll be taking on Friday is it a commuter train? We have a light rail system in the Twin Cities, not sure if that would be the same thing. I don't think it goes over about 40-45 mph because it makes quite a few stops. When we took that this past winter into downtown St. Paul, Dakota thought it was the coolest thing to ride. And the fact we could change seats if we wanted to, blew her mind! (She takes the school bus and I'm assuming once you are in your seat you have to stay there)
The next 6 days we are going to be in the mid-to-upper 80's and sunny and no rain in sight. Tomorrow will be humid as well, not sure about the rest of the days.

Hope you both have a wonderful Wednesday!!

emoticon

I'm sorry I didn't post yesterday - don't know where the day went!!

Mema - I'm sorry you also had a bit of a run-in with a bear. It was quite a startling event in my life! Although we don't seem to have wolves here, we do have a lot of coyotes. There has been concern that people may be feeding them. I am also a huge fan of wolves and know they are east of here, in Algonquin Park.
That's amazing that you have 3 birthdays in a row. My first husband's B/D was March 30 and mine is April 1, so we celebrated March 31. I have 2 nephews with the same birthday in September, and one of our great nephews was born on my sister's B/D in January. You have a similar set-up too Kate, with your DH having a birthday so close to yours!
I bet the blackberry muffins are excellent!! I love fresh corn too.
I hope you enjoy your road trip today! I'm sure your DH will love getting out!

Kate - I imagine the people picking the berries were giving that bear plenty of space - ha!
My laundry gets done every 2 weeks, when my housekeeper is here. I have enough of everything to last that long. I have to go through my tops and give the Medium ones away. I don't weigh much, but between my scoliosis and COPD, my rib cage is larger, so I've been buying Large tops lately. I won't have them all ready to go when Diane takes me out Friday, because at least one top has to be washed when my housekeeper is here next week.
It's still humid here today, so I'm not being very active.
I hope your trip to the museum goes well on Friday. I am also a huge fan of trains!

I'm looking forward to reading now of course! I made a few important calls this morning, and took out garbage and recycling.

I hope you're both having wonderful days!

Leslie - hope you had a good day reading.

Mema – we got our first ears of corn from our CSA on Friday. Nice. I do love fresh corn season.

Sounds like a good idea to have a road trip w/ your DH. A good cure for his “cabin fever”. Must be hard to have so many limitations on what he can do.

It’s still hot and muggy here. They’re predicting thunderstorms for Wed/Thurs which should help cool things off a bit and perhaps a bit less humid, too.

We’re planning on an outing on Friday to take the train into the city and see a wax museum. I have to go over to the library and pick up the ‘free admission’ pass for the museum. Not sure how DGS will like the museum, but he did want to take the train. We’ll find some lunch somewhere down there, too.

I had a pretty productive day today. Got my ironing done, made blackberry muffins that are very good, had to make a bunch of calls to my aunts and uncles about wearing purple or some shade of purple to my mom's memorial service. Then a bunch of odds and ends.

DH and I had our first taste of corn on the cob for the season. It was very good! I bought a dozen ears, but only made 5 for tonight. I always look forward to corn on the cob up here.

So tomorrow DH and I are going up to Duluth, MN for some shopping and then out for dinner at TX Roadhouse! I love that restaurant. He's getting a bit of "cabin fever" because he's limited to what he can do. He's so used to being able to be out in the garage and fix things, move things, just DO things and he really can't right now. But that works for me - road trip! LOL

Kate - I don't always wake up that early (2-3) but like today I woke up at 5 am, went to the bathroom and then went back to sleep. I have always been able to do that.
Oh, I remember you telling me once about yours and your DH's b-days being close. I remember you saying about picking a weekend day to celebrate. My mom's b-day was Nov. 27th - she was actually born on Thanksgiving! I've seen the yellow topaz, but I don't know if I even knew there were other colors - they sound very pretty.

Leslie - I hope you had an enjoyable day. We actually had a really nice day here weather-wise. Low humidity and sunny.

Have a great Tuesday!

Leslie – wow! Scary about the bear. I had friends whose car was badly damaged by being hit by a deer. Not that they hit the deer, but the deer was coming down a hillside and ran straight into the side of their car.

I’m almost always awake sometime around 2-3 in the morning but I can almost always go back to sleep.

My birthday is on the 12th and my DH is on the 15th so we usually pick a weekend day closest to one of those dates to celebrate. This year I’ll be at a retreat on my birthday so we’ll celebrate nearer to my DH’s day. My first pair of pierced earrings have the yellow topaz stones and I do still wear them from time to time but I like the blue ones better.

Mema – Wow – another bear! Last summer when we were in the mountains in NH we saw bears. DH and DGS saw one at the resort we were staying at and then we all saw one enjoying the strawberries at a ‘U-pick’ place. The people picking berries were giving it a lot of space.

We don't have wolves around here but there are increasing numbers of coyotes.

I run out of nightgowns and undies if I don’t do the laundry every week. My DH used to travel for 2 week long trips so he’s got lots of underclothes but I run out.

We have some birthday runs like that – me and my DH just 3 days apart. My SIL and my BIL are the 24th and 26th of December. And my DS and DGS share a birthday in January. I think it’s fun.

It was and still is pretty humid here and not a whole lot of breeze either. I did get my laundry done and for some reason I had a lot - I must not have done it last weekend like I usually try and do. Probably because of DH's b-day! And then we just had leftovers for dinner - easy peasy!

Leslie - My b-day is August 21st. My DIL's is the 20th and one of our grandsons is the 22nd! Three all in a row!
We have had wolves here in WI - not usually close to us, but there was a time a few years ago DH and I were driving to the Twin Cities and there's a road we take (30 miles) that cuts across into MN and along the side of the road, we saw a wolf. It's almost like - Is that what I think it is? We usually don't see them. I guess in MN for awhile they were allowed to be hunted because they were killing a lot of farmers cows or sheep. Then they were put on the endangered species for awhile. I don't think they can be hunted now, but I don't know for sure. I used to get Wolf calendars every year. There's just something about them that I love! I bet your statue is beautiful!
I also hit a bear once - it was about a 2 year old cub - didn't do any damage to my car - I caught him on his rear quarters and didn't seem to do any damage to him either - he ran into the woods pretty fast. He was running across the road and before I even saw him he was in front of me and I clipped him. Your experience sounds more scary than mine - I don't think I would have liked looking into a bear's face! And yes, we have a lot of black bears up right around us. DH and I saw a sow (mom) with her 3 cubs run across the road when we were going into town not too long ago.
I will say I love seeing all the wildlife around us especially the deer! But not face-to-face with most of them! LOL
I did the same thing as you, Leslie with my car. Locked it with it running. Only I didn't realize it for several hours. That was back in my drinking days - go figure!

Kate - Sounds like you had a great day yesterday - gardening and then relaxing.
It's going to be hot and sunny now this week. Not sure how humid it will be - I hope not bad and I do hope we get a breeze. That always makes a huge difference.
Glad it worked out for your DD to be able to call AAA. I'm sure it was faster.
Not sure I would like to play golf in the rain, but I see people from our club in TX that play in rain, cold, hot and humid weather. I guess if you love golf, it doesn't always matter much what the weather is outside. Good thing there was no thunder - that would mean possible lightning - and the golf course is not a good place to be during a t-storm holding onto a metal golf club!

Not sure what is on the agenda for me tomorrow. I may get my ironing done. I have to start making a list of things I need in the bigger town. I'll be going later this week. I have to pick up an Rx from Walmart so that's my reason to go.

Hope you both stay cool! emoticon

Mema - The Health fair and craft fair sounded wonderful! Was it all at the same place? The things they were giving away sound terrific.
I'm glad you had a good meeting too.
When in August is your birthday? I have 3 other friends who have early August birthdays, the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th (tomorrow). The one tomorrow has quite a bit of peridot jewelry.
In all the years I lived in WI, I never got to Door County either, but of course have seen gorgeous photos from there.
I would also love to go to the Wolf Center and Bear Center. One year I 'adopted' a wolf from a place in Oregon I think, and when I left that place of employment, in Texas, my best friend there gave me a lovely statue of a white wolf, howling - I really treasure that. I don't think we have wolves in our immediate vicinity here, but we do have lots of black bears. I once sideswiped one with my car. It was crossing the road but suddenly changed direction. Its face was only inches from mine, and it sounded as if the whole side of my car was crumpled. I pulled over a couple of miles down the road to look for damage - there was none, but the bear had peed on my rear tire, which fascinated my dog when I got home!
I hope it works out for you to have Dakota for a few days!

Kate - I am getting up much later these days - for several years, I was getting up between 12:30 and 3 am, so this is a big improvement!
When is your birthday in November? I have several relatives with November birthdays. I actually have a pretty ring with a topaz stone (the yellow/gold kind). It was given to me as a 'promise' ring many years ago by my long-time partner. I still wear it almost all the time.
It's pretty hot and humid here too. The weather is supposed to change again on Tuesday.
It sounds like you're getting a wonderful supply of food from your garden!
I'm sorry about your DD being locked out of her car. That happened to me once, with the engine running...

I've finally talked to my very good 'old' friend, whose birthday was on the 2nd. She was going to be away that day, so we finally connected this morning, and must have talked for about an hour! It's always great to hear her voice.
Now I'm going to get back to reading.

Have beautiful days!!

Leslie – I have a similar bed time schedule. I’ve always been an early riser.

My birth stone is Topaz for November. That’s usually a yellow/gold stone which doesn’t match any of the colors I wear. I have a grey topaz necklace from my dad and the earrings are blue topaz. I do wear a lot of blues and blacks so those suit me.

Mema – sounds like you had a really nice day at the health and craft fairs. Lots of nice ‘swag’. I do like going to craft fairs and seeing all the unique and creative things people make.

I hope things work out for a visit from your DGD. It sounds like fun. They have a wolf center somewhere around here – or at least they did when the kids were young. We took them there for an educational program. I should check to see if it’s still open. DGS would like that.

Our forecast is for temps in the 90’s for the next 3 days and really high humidity, too. We’ve just been stuck in this weather pattern for a long time.

We had a quiet day yesterday. I was out in my garden early to avoid the bad weather. I picked another 7 cucumbers and a pint of cherry tomatoes. The tomatoes are just starting to ripen. Then I went to a meeting in the morning and then came home at lunchtime. We did all the laundry and relaxed.

DD was working an event on Saturday. The original plan was that we would pick up DGS at noon and keep him overnight but the plans changed at the last minute so he stayed home w/ his dad. There was one 'hiccup' b/c DD locked her keys and purse in her car in the morning when she got to the place she was working. She called here on a borrowed phone since we have a spare set of keys. DH gave her the AAA phone number and membership number. Since she was more than an hour drive from here, it seemed that might be the fastest solution. I guess that worked b/c she never called back.

DS had 2 golf tournaments so he dropped the dogs off early. It poured rain off and on during the afternoon as well as being steamy hot in between the storms. DS said since there was no thunder, they just kept playing and got soaked.

I was 3rd in line for the Health Fair this morning! But I got there at 8:30 and they open the doors at 9:00, but usually there is already a line at 8:30! We got some pretty good rain here thru the night and early in the morning and it looked gray most of the morning, so I think people might have stayed home because of the weather.

And the other thing the Health Fair has started doing is you can sign up for the blood tests and then come back when it may be more convenient for you so I think a lot more people who live in town do that. I just like getting it done then and there. And they had some really nice give a-ways this year! 2 different size cold packs, journals, a small notebook with those little post-it strips, pill box, jar openers, measuring cup so if nothing else it was worth it just for that! LOL

And I walked up and down the craft fair and got my sister her b-day gift. I always try and get her something unique. A hand made (heavy-duty) trivet with "Kathy's Kitchen" embroidered on it. Do you remember those old rope rugs? This was similar to that but in a trivet size with a loop at the top so it can be hung. And then I found these unusual glass salt and pepper shakers that a woman paints on them. All different designs - lighthouses from the tall slender s & p, Christmas, Halloween, flowers, birds plus more and I found a set that had music stuff on it. One was a treble clef and the other a bass clef and she painted some notes on it and a couple of words like "forte" or "allegro". And so I got those for her - my sister used to play French Horn in high school and then in the National Guard band and she also plays piano and organ and keyboards. Then I bought myself a set of s & p with palm trees on them that I will bring to TX.

Then I went to my meeting and ended up leading that because the regular person couldn't make it.

So all in all it was a pretty good day and the rain held off all morning and into the early afternoon.

Tomorrow now we're back into the heat wave and I think it's going to be muggy as well. We're supposed to hit 87!

Leslie - I have never been allergic to pets, either - very thankful for that. We always had small dogs growing up and then I got a cat myself and with DH we had 2 dogs (along with the cat that we swear he thought he was a dog!) He was trained right along with the dogs for going to bed, staying put while we would eat and he loved snuggling up to our lab - she would give him a little low growl and he would snuggle up even closer or rub his head on her! We always figured the cat thought the dog was "purring"! LOL
I hope you can get a lower interest rate - that would be nice and helpful, too.
My sister's birthstone is diamond as well - her b-day is April 25th. Mine is Peridot for August - not the prettiest, but what can you do? Ha!
How nice that your son gave his soon-to-be wife your ring for an engagement ring - it sounds very pretty.
Did you get in lots of reading?

Kate - I would prefer the cooler weather, but that won't be the case now. I don't even mind the higher temps if it wasn't so muggy and humid - that's what gets me.
And you know for living in WI and pretty far North, I have never been to Door County myself. Although it's a little further south and way on the other side of the state - about a 5 hour drive for us, but I would love to go sometime, everyone says it's so beautiful. DH and I were talking about going to Ely, MN (up near the BWCA) and visiting the Wolf Center. I love to watch wolves and they have them up there in a large natural setting for them. Plus they have a Bear Center, too with bears in their natural setting.
I sent an email to my DS to see about getting Dakota the end of August. I will be going to their house on the 26th to go to the State Fair and when I leave their place it will be the Wednesday before Labor Day and I would like to take her with me and then DS and wife and Ryan could come up Saturday night or Sunday to pick her up. We'll see what he says.

Hope you have a blessed Sunday!

Mema - my friend in Winnipeg also had a couple of chilly days - she was wearing sweaters and jeans. It's warmed up again now.
I hope the weather will be good for your Health Fair!
You're lucky to sleep so late, but I go to bed earlier, between 9 and 10, and get up between 5 - 6. At least I am finally sleeping a good number of hours. And so are you!
I know that when I lived in the US, I also thought Thanksgiving was a little too close to Christmas.

Kate - I'm glad you enjoyed spin class. I'm glad your earrings look so good. What is your birthstone? Mine is diamond, for April. I used to have a diamond pin that my grandmother gave me, but it was something I never really had a chance to wear, so I sold it, and have never regretted that. The same grandmother also left me a pretty diamond and sapphire ring, which I gave to my son to use as an engagement ring when he proposed to my DIL. It looks good on her, so I was happy I had it to pass on.
I'm sorry you're allergic to some cats. I've been lucky to never have had allergies to any animals. I've had dogs and/or cats for most of my life. I also had a wonderful parrot.
I understand your DD not wanting to take on her partner's debt. I happen to be the one with debt right now, although I am paying it down more quickly now that I no longer have a car. I plan to call the banks next week to see if I can get lower interest rates so that my payments will make a bigger difference. That's a good reason for my husband to go along with the divorce, so he wouldn't become responsible for the debt if I should die first. I really shouldn't have bought the car when I did. While I was making car payments, I had to use credit cards every time I went to the dentist, and every time I took my cat to the vet, and for anything the least bit out of the ordinary, so I ended up with quite a bit of debt, but it's coming down well now.
I hope your DD's partner will also get out of debt so they can marry.

It's heating up again here, so I'm in front of my fan. I haven't bothered dressing yet. I'm just having a lazy day, and hope to do lots of reading.

I hope you both have wonderful days!

I had a really nice time in spin class. And after I came home and showered I got my earrings. They look good – all nice and cleaned up as well as repaired. I’ll wear them today. They were hand crafted and have my birthstone.

Mema – we’ve had some blustery weather but not the cold. It’s staying hot and muggy even w/ the rain storms passing through.

Our OA group sometimes mans booths at health fairs – just giving out general info about the 12 Step program. I’ve never gone b/c we usually have DGS here on Saturday mornings during the school year.

I have a friend in another Spark group who is at the Door County state fair this weekend.

And I noticed, too, that my DGS was often sadder when he talked w/ his mom while he stayed w/ us. But recovered quickly afterwards.

Leslie – having a holiday in August makes sense. We just have Memorial day at the end of May, 4th of July, and then Labor Day. And of course our Thanksgiving isn’t until the end of November.

Glad you enjoyed your pedicure and caught the bus both ways.

I’m allergic to some cats. It’s a minor allergy to the ones my DD has, but some cats are so bad I can’t go into the house where they’re living. I never owned one b/c I didn’t want to adopt a cat and then discover it was one of the ‘allergic’ kinds.

My DD and her partner have been living together since she got pregnant. No plans to marry. I think they did talk about it once, my DD won’t do it, b/c he has some big past debts he’s paying off and she can’t stand the idea of being in debt. Although I’m old fashioned enough to wish she was married, I understand her reasons.

36.5 pounds gone, 17.5 more pounds is my 2020 goal.

We had kind of a cold, blustery day here with rain off and on. It was supposed to be nice - go figure! I did run into town to go to the bank and then had some phone calls to make.
Tomorrow I'm going to a Health Fair at the local hospital in one of the towns - Spooner. They have it every year along with a craft fair and other events - it's called Jack Pine Savage Days. Anyway, at the health fair they do cholesterol and blood glucose tests for free! And then thru out some of the common areas in the hospital they have different booths with information on various subjects (mental health, diabetes, Alzheimers, etc.) and little give a-ways. But the craft fair may get rained out - they hold it on "main" street in town so it's outside.
Then I will go to my meeting since I missed my Wednesday meeting.

Leslie - Thanks for explaining the Civic Holiday. I wish our Thanksgiving was in October. With it in November, everything seems like it's rush, rush, rush to Christmas.
Oh, if I happen to wake up really early, I will take a nap early in the day. But I don't get up early much anymore - it's usually between 8:00 and 9:00 am! But I don't go to bed until 11:30 or Midnight.
I'm glad you enjoyed your pedicure. And good thing you had the extra money! I'm glad you were able to take the bus, too!

Kate - Nice that you had a "free" day!
I'm not sure I would be able to walk 3 dogs, either! The enclosed run you have for the dogs sounds pretty nice for them!
Two years ago, I think it was, I watched Dakota and Ryan for 4 days while my DS and DIL went to Door County, WI. We thought it would be a great idea to skype so Dakota could see mommy and daddy. Well, that turned out to be a disaster - she started crying so hard. I think it was hard to see them and not have them right there. But after we got off the computer, she was better in a couple of minutes. But my heart just sank when she got so sad. But keeping them busy helped.
Were you able to get your earrings?

Hope you enjoy your Saturday!!

I think most of the provinces have holidays on the first Monday in August. It is called different things in different places, but I think most of Ontario calls it Civic Holiday. I think that because our winters can go on so long, it's really just an excuse for another summer long weekend. :) We have Victoria Day in May, Canada Day at the beginning of July, Civic Holiday in August, and of course Labour Day in September, then Thanksgiving in October, the second Monday I think.

Mema - I'm glad you had a good sleep after that bad night. I rarely take naps now, but if I get up too early, i.e. before about 4, I get so sleepy by about 8 am that having a nap is not a choice but a necessity! I went for a few years with terrible insomnia! I was only sleeping 2-4 hours almost every night, and, as you said, not feeling exhausted at all. I'm glad those days are in the past now though. Now I sleep 7-8 hours most nights.
We have one bad fire here, known as Parry Sound 33. It is not as devastating as that brutal one in California, but it keeps threatening to close down Highway 69 which is a main north/south route, as well as the Trans-Canada Highway which runs east/west.
That would be wonderful if you could have Dakota come for a visit next summer!

Kate - I'm sure I could no longer walk even one dog! I do miss having dogs though. We had 2 dogs at one point, and a large yard which was not fenced, but the dogs were good at staying home. I love dogs, and cats too, but with my limited mobility, cleaning the litter box got to be very difficult, as was taking the cat to the vet's.
Does your DGS's dad live with him and your DD? I'm glad he'll have a day with him today, and that you have a free day! Enjoy your time! I hope your earring is perfect again.

It's been a lovely morning, but we may have rain or storms later.
I really enjoyed my pedicure. She did more than I was expecting, so the price was also quite a bit more, but thank goodness I had enough with me, and I was able to take the mobility bus both ways, so that was good.

I hope everyone is having a great day!

Leslie – I had noticed on my calendar that it said “Civic Holiday – Canada”. I’m not familiar w/ that one. We haven’t had any rain yet but it’s in the forecast for today.

I like the dogs and they’re manageable, but I’m not up to walking all 3 at once. I can manage 2 but 3 is too many. And they’re not good at sitting and waiting when I need to stop and pick up after one of them does their business.

Mema – yes, I miss our dog so it’s nice to have ‘part time’ dogs around the house. We have a fenced in run (15 x 45 ft) that they can go out in.

When we first started taking DGS for extended times, he would occasionally get sad and miss his parents but it was usually just for a few minutes. I think his parents missed him more than he missed them b/c he was busy doing fun things.

DGS is staying home w/ his dad today so we canceled our "Friday w/ the grandparents" activities. It's nice to have a totally free day. I'm going to spin class this morning and then doing errands. I have to pick up a pair of earrings that have been in the shop for repairs - one of them got stepped on and the clasp was bent flat. They're the most expensive earrings I own so it was worth fixing them.

I had a good night's sleep last night. emoticon I picked a bunch of blackberries today. Not sure what I will do with those, maybe make a cobbler or something.
Picked up a bunch of sticks that were in our yard - large one's that the lawn mower can't go over. And just odds and ends of things.

Leslie - I try not to take a nap if I haven't slept well because then I'm afraid I won't sleep that night either. If it's just one night here and there that I have trouble sleeping, then I'm ok with not taking a nap. There was a period of time when I was working that I actually had insomnia! I would get an hour or so of sleep a night but not much more than that. That went on for about 2-3 weeks, then I went to the dr. But it really wasn't as bad as it would seem. I think because of what was going on with work and other things, my body was like in overdrive or something. I didn't like that I wasn't sleeping, but I wasn't nearly as tired as you would think someone should be. But I'm glad I don't have that any longer!
What is a "Civic Holiday"?
And I guess I haven't heard about the fires up your way. I keep hearing about the one in California. I hope yours doesn't get out of hand.

Kate - It's so nice that you get to see your DGS often. I was just talking to DH about having Dakota up here for a few days - maybe not this summer, but for sure next summer. She is 6 so she should be ok. It's a long way back to her house if she would want to go home, but I think she would love to do that. She's always so sad when she has to leave here when they have visited.
Do you have a fenced yard that you can let your DS's dogs out by themselves? Or do you walk them? I miss having a dog of our own, but know that it would not be a good idea for us anymore.

Happy Friday to you!

Mema - I'm glad you were able to take a day off yesterday. Can you take naps after not sleeping well at night?
A mini-pedicure is just a nail trim and file, and fresh polish - no soaking or foot massaging or whatever else is part of a regular pedicure. I soaked my feet this morning in hopes that the nails will be less brittle tomorrow. I tried removing the polish that was put on in May, but it was really put on to stay, and I wasn't able to struggle with it for long, so I guess they'll have to do that too... I have a hard time cutting my toenails, so I'll be glad to get that done tomorrow! The bus is $3/trip (one way) and the cab fares start at $3.85 I think - I know it's well over $3!!

Kate - I hope you'll get some rain too. We needed it very badly here too, but we should have made up our deficit by now; it really poured for hours yesterday.
It sounds like you are having busy days, with your kids, and DGS, and the dogs too! How do you and the dogs get along? I hope they're manageable for you.

It's sunny now, but we may get more rain and storms later today.
I've ordered my groceries, so they will be here sometime this afternoon.
This will be another holiday weekend; our 'Civic Holiday' is Monday, so the roads will be busy, and the ferry is having trouble accommodating everyone. Not only is it a holiday weekend, but there is a massive forest fire threatening to close the main north/south route on the east side of Georgian Bay, so the people who would normally drive are trying to get on the ferry too.

Have a great day!

Mema – cool rainy days are perfect for doing nothing. You had a busy week so a break sounds like just what you needed.

Leslie – Hope you are able to catch the bus home after the pedicure. We are needing the rain here. They keep saying chance of thunder storms but we haven’t had any.

Pat – I’m glad your leg is doing so much better. You’re right, it’s hard to have patience. I also want things to heal quickly and to lose all the weight right now.

Yesterday the dogs were here and DGS in the morning and late afternoon before and after camp. Both of my kids were here for dinner, too, so it made a nice end to the day. Saturday we’ll have my grandson for the afternoon and overnight since my DD has a work event. And my DS is working, too, so we’ll have the dogs all day long Saturday.

It was a cool, rainy day here and I didn't do anything today. First of all I didn't sleep well at all last night, so that didn't help for today. I skipped my meeting, but I'll go either Friday or Saturday. Probably Saturday - there's a Health Fair in Spooner that I usually go to every year and then from there, my meeting is just 6 more miles away.

Leslie - what is a mini-pedicure? Sounds interesting. I hope you are able to get your ride back on the bus, so you don't have to take a cab. Do you have to pay for the bus?

Pat - sounds like things are going well for you. I know what you mean about weight coming off slowly - but it seems like I can put it on rather quickly! LOL

Kate - I'm glad you've got your next appointment, but holy cow, 6:30 am is awfully early. But I suppose that works best for the dr. I'm sure it was pretty hectic making your way back home with dilated pupils and sunshine. Yikes!

I'm hoping to have a less lazy day tomorrow. DH would like some oatmeal cookies, so I may bake them for him.

Hope you all enjoy your Thursday!

Pat - your plan sounds like a good one. I wish you great success!
It's good to hear from you. emoticon

Kate- Wow, that sounds like quite an adventure with your pupils dilated! Glad you made it home safely. Your next appointment will be early indeed!

We had such heavy rain this morning that I had to turn up the volume on my radio so I could hear it. It's still raining now, but supposed to clear this afternoon.
I've been to the exercise class this morning, and got an appointment for a mini-pedicure on Friday morning. I'll also be able to get a ride there with the mobility bus, which is great. I don't know how long I'll be, so I'll have to take my chances on getting a ride home. I may have to take a cab.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, ladies, and happy August!

August first already, how times flies. just seems like spring and now summer is almost over. .Been .going to PH and doing wonder for my leg. I have been going twice a week for month now and it showed me that I have to do things with more care making sure I don.t over do. It is improving but I want to get everything done right now. I know I can do this, but I.m impatience.Just like with the weight, didn't come on slowly so it won't come off quickly, but I am sticking with it and will achieve success. More slowly then I would like but in the end I will get there. Food is going good and improving every day. slow and steady is my way. Pat

A whole new month!! The last one went so fast!

Mema – sounds like a good but a long one. Glad the stitches came out easily and every thing looks good. Enjoy your meeting. I have a meeting today, too.

The doctor said that this kind of ‘capsule opacification’ happens about 20% of the time in people my age. It wouldn’t matter all that much since it’s only in one eye, except that I usually use a contact only in one eye and so I have distance vision in one eye and reading vision in the other. So when one eye is blurry, I really notice it. When I use my glasses, I can just ignore the slight blurring.

The train into Boston for my eye appt. went smoothly. I was there for over an hour w/ various people looking at my eye. The diagnosis my optometrist made was confirmed and the treatment is what he suggested. I go back in two weeks to get the laser blasting/cleaning. The doctor does those procedures before office hours so I have to be there at 6:30 AM.

They had both eyes dilated so that the iris was barely visible. When I left, the sunlight was so bright I had to switch to sunglasses. I was glad I had my big sun hat to cut down on the glare, too. Unfortunately the sunglasses I had w/ me were the ones I wear w/ contact lenses and had no correction in them. Between the blurriness from the dilation and the lack of corrective lenses, I was half way blind trying to find my way back through the streets of Boston. Fortunately I only had to cross one street. I stood there and switched glasses to my regular ones, took a peek to see where the crossing sign was and then switched back to the sunglasses. All I could see was a little red blur where the ‘don’t walk’ light was shining but I could see when it went out and the little white blur came on for the “walk” so I walked. I was home by 10 AM.
