Walked the dog yesterday, I realized what a destresser it is for me. I guess I never paid attention before.
This is a great one for me. I moved in June 2016, and resigned from my job September 2016, to stay at home with the kids, and because my husbands job is crazy busy, he can't guarantee to always be home.
Since I was a new stay at home mom and new to the area, I started signing up to volunteer for.... everything! No one was getting back to me. I felt even worse... who didn't want free help? People didn't even want me for volunteering. Well, slowly people started reaching out to me. And before I knew it, I had volunteered for way too much!! I was surprised that I found myself able to say no to some of it. It had been months since I offered my help with no reply, so I just simply stated that I did not hear back from them and had found other opportunities. Phew! Now, I volunteer as room mom for my daughters class, at the PTA for my son's school, and the American Red Cross as a disaster relief worker, Health services, and food services, although they keep trying to add more, and I just had to tell them no more!

This week, we're on Week 4 in the rotation which means we are on our Self Esteem Mini-Challenge! In the States, Monday is Presidents Day and therefore a holiday (no work, yay!)

How many of us fill our lives with so many things that sometimes we feel utterly overwhelmed? I am guilty of that, certainly...sometimes worse than others!

I'm sure many of you have read this one before but it's such a good example in my life, I'm afraid I'm going to repeat it again for the new folks: I used to take on SO much without realizing it....or I offer for new tasks all the while wondering, then worrying, about how I was going to fit anything more into my already bulging schedule and life.

I'm an artist. Several years ago I thought I would make a little extra money doing pet portraiture. Fortunately, it seemed, I immediately began getting commission after commission that I kept saying "yes" to. I was thrilled! Until I realized that they had started to pile up. It got to the point where the act of painting for me was no longer the stress-relieving fun time I had come to look forward to. Instead, it had quickly become a 'chore' to complete the commissions fast fast fast and it actually began to cause more stress than it alleviated.

Unable to manage commissions definitely left me harried and depressed. I eventually returned several of the commissions with apologies that I simply could not get them done. What a relief! I was able to breathe again. The pressure was off. But, I felt somewhat of a failure.

I learned from that experience that I can NOT agree to do things I cannot fit into my schedule or projects that will provide more stress than they relieve. It took a while to figure out how to spot those stress inducing tasks though and to learn that saying "No" from the start is SO MUCH better for me than saying "No" after the fact and feeling like a big failure. Of course, that part takes practice!

I have learned that just because I CAN do something, doesn't mean I HAVE to do it!

Wow! What a revelation!

I let it go. In my mind I learned to say, "No thank you" and I not made a call to accept yet another candle burning project that was surely fraught with stress since. I've made similar changes in my life, too, in order to simplify and let go of stress. For instance, I stopped the daily newspaper & stopped all my subscription magazines. I never had time to read the newspaper or the magazines and they would pile up in the corner waiting for me; each time I walked by I could feel them calling to me, asking for my time. Then, to top it off, I felt guilty that I was paying for subscriptions that I wasn't reading. All that has stopped. I said, "No thank you" to all the requests for renewals and simplified. Update: I started my newspaper subscription again for the SOLE purpose of getting the coupons. In order to relieve the stress associated with not reading the paper, I open it, immediately throw away everything that isn't a coupon and I feel just fine about it. I am sticking to my purpose of getting the paper.

The update on this is that I have an annual subscription to the paper and I'm no longer couponing like I used to, so they are piling up and causing stress! Ugh. The subscription stopped in November...relief!!!

Recently, I opened a shop on Facebook called Crochet Cafe' by LB (come & Like my Page if that interests you!). I'm getting in consistent orders for things but it's not out of hand...I'm paying close attention and if it starts to become real "work", I'll need to make some decisions. So far, so good. Shew!

Those are some examples in my life that have really helped me simplify. Now, it's time for next weeks MC:

It's for you to say "YES!" to some stress management tips. From the articles below, pick at least ONE stress management tip per day for 4 of the 7 days the MC is in effect (more than that might be stressful!! :) And, of course, report the ones you choose (and their affects) here.

(SP article - don't forget to get your 3 points for reading it!)

Let's hear how you do, how you feel, how you manage your time and if you learn anything new! I'm still open to simplifying in every aspect of my life & I have no better teachers than this team!
