Okay, so I found that my beloved Graham crackers have a decent amount of sugar, so I'm cutting those out.

I didn't post much this week, but I definitly checked labels all week. I didn't find a lot of HFCS in foods in our house (I try to stay away from them), but I did find a few. BBQ sauce and the typical places others stated. But, lots of sugar found. Good reminder to look at labels.
Thanks

It's funny that this is the challenge this week, because I decided to do this anyway. Not sure where I will find hidden sugar, since I cut out pretty much all packaged foods, but I'll keep looking!

MARPARMC46 ,HFCS is high fructose corn syrup.

OK, today I swapped mustard for ketchup which lists HFCS and then corn syrup as its third and fourth ingredients.
Also made a batch of brownies (for the upcoming Jewish New Year) which has 2 cups of sugar (I used Demetra, but still) for a 9*13 pan. So, I have committed to not partake in this dessert.

I have not seen much HFCS in our things, but the variation of sugar content in things amazes me. Especially yogurt. Depending on the brand and flavor the sugar per serving can be any where from 5g to 22g. Wow! Plain or vanilla yogurt and fresh fruit added by me looks like the best choice.

KARENOFMS- I have to agree with you feeling on Crystal Light. I tried it the other day and it gave me a headache. It was like I could taste the chemicals added. Maybe if I limit enough sugar for long enough, sweets will also taste bad emoticon

I did it, swapped my protein bar for Greek yogurt with a peach and two tablespoons of craisins that were sweetened with pineapple juice. I was surprised how delicious it was. Just took some extra per gym planning.

Gasp.......Just ate breakfast....just remembered to check the ingredients listed in what I thought was "healthier" bread, Pepperidge Farm Very Thin 100 % Whole Wheat. I was shocked to see HFCS a little more than mid-way down. I will no longer buy Pepperidge Farm. I also have & checked, Sara Lee Delightful 45 Calorie Healthy Multi-Grain (much better choice) it DOES NOT have HFCS listed in the ingredients, Sara Lee uses natural Stevia. Wish I would have looked before I ate. I had 1 egg & a piece of toast. lol. I feel like the HFCS police now. lol.

I've been doing really well avoiding most sugar and hfcs this week, but I was invited to a going away party at my favorite pizza place last night so I was proud of myself for eating very light but healthy all day in anticipation of enjoying a little pizza and even walked 2 miles at lunch since I wasn't going to have a chance to go to the gym. It got rather late by the time we got there and I ordered our pizza, but then the hosts put out fresh appetizers (all deep-fried ) and I ended up eating a few onion rings, mushrooms and toasted ravioli - and then still ate a half piece more of pizza than I had allotted myself! So disappointed in myself, but today is a new day - plus I still lost 2 pounds last week! It's working - just need to pick myself up and get back on when I fall off!

Do pretty well I haven't had a pop in 3 days and today I had a ad sweet tooth but I found a good salty spicy trail mix. I loved it and it took away the craving. I checked the nutrition all all was in it was 1 gram of surger per serving.

I like this one!!! I'm ALWAYS looking at the sugar content & aspartame (the worst). I only drink water, un-sweet tea or almond milk. I stopped drinking dt. coke & anything with aspartame in it over a year ago. About a month ago I tasted some Crystal Light that my son made I thought I was going to throw up. It tasted like chemicals. How can we drink that? Why is our government allowing it in our foods/drinks (aspartame)? If I need to sweeten anything I use organic Stevia.

Limiting sugar is a hard one for me, but I'm definitely up for the challenge.
Beef jerky has sugar as the 2nd ingredient. I just finished a HUGE grocery shopping trip, and picked up hubby some beef jerky (he likes it as an occasional after work, before dinner snack). I usually steal a piece or two :)
I was comparing the labels (different brands and flavors) and noticed some have a lot more sugar than others. Who would have thought Beef Jerky had sugar in it. I guess it makes sense that the flavored ones, especially a sweet flavor would have more sugar.

This one is going to be tough! I like my sugar!!! I have cut back drastically on my intake - eating a lot of fruit instead of candy, cookies, etc. and although I do try to read labels, I don't usually pay as much attention to the sugar as the calories. Not sure I want my eyes opened that wide! ;-)

Little nervious about this one. Im bad about reading labels. I do it but I'm just looking more for the calories protins and fat.

I drink one bottle of pop a day. Any ideas on what I can replace my pop with?

Oh boy, this MC is going to be an eye opener. I DO read the labels all the time but the sugar aspect may be overlooked especially when I'm looking solely at the calories, protein & fiber. I will definitely be on board with this week's MC.

The time is here to make things happen!

I am in the process of eliminating diet cokes because of the sugar sub. thanks for the note on the nutrition bar. I have been accepting the ad saying it is healthy when I need to read the labels closely. this will be my pledge this week when groc shopping.

I was reading this week's challenge while munching on my post workout nutrition bar. So , I decided to flip it over and see what I was actually eating. OMG! that thing was FULL of HFCS and refined sugar. I couldn't believe it! I am usually good about reading labels and watching my sugar intake but I guess the "nutrition bar" title fooled me and I never really read what was in this bar (it was a zone perfect caramel brownie nutrition bar, by the way). I plan to replace all post workout protein bars with a plain greek yogurt and a fruit (at least for this week). Thanks for the awareness and good luck to all with this challenge!

Hello all!

Bottom line: Sugar, well too much refined sugar, sucrose, fructose, etc. is not good for you! And it's in just about everything these days! It's important to check labels before buying and ingesting!local paper. Intake of too much sugar, and especially items with High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) can be detrimental to my body and my diet. More so than I even knew way back then.

We cannot stop the barrage of chocolate and other sweet delectables that flood the market every perceived holiday but we CAN take control and win the war for ourselves, our health and our bodies. This weeks MC is to keenly watch the amount of refined sugar, fructose, glucose & HFCS that we ingest into our bodies. It's in much, much more than just chocolate & other sweet stuff.

Now, and here's the tricky part, HFCS can be lurking in places that you might not realize they are. For instance there is loads of HCFS in canned sodas (we broke that cycle 2 weeks ago, yes?), in breakfast cereals, in ketchup and in snack bars & power bars. So, your MC is to read labels & choose wisely!

For 5 days out of the 7 this MC is in effect, make a substitution of a healthy snack when you find too much HFCS, refined sugar, glucose or fructose in a food that you might otherwise have eaten had you not been paying attention.

Report in this Forum exactly where you are finding the hidden sugar in your diet and what substitution you made so that it can help us all!!!

Also, did you know that refined sugar is THE number one offender in causing 'belly fat'? Ewwww....and we just finished all those crunches! Don't let all that work go to waste!

Read this one page SP article about sugar substitutions: tinyurl.com/2ztmmr

Read more about HCFS and why it's harmful: tinyurl.com/pnz36

Read about breakfast cereal scams & how much sugar there really IS in the morning staple:
tinyurl.com/32w78g

Don't forget to get your 3 points EACH for reading the articles.....above all, have fun with this and enjoy your week.

Hugs ya'll and remember to Say No to HFCS!

L.
