Wonderful! We'll do it again in a month or two and see how it's going for everyone. I'm glad you found the article of interest.

Lynn, that's fantastic! I don't think I could follow such a strict regime but I try to eat natural products, with a strong emphasis on fruit and vegetables.

I think it would be good if we could continue this challenge next week as it is advocating an approach which many of us may not have tried before. I meditate regularly but have never tried it for losing weight. Minnie has also suggested we continue. If not, it could be interesting to have it again later and see how many people are still following it.

Minnie, it is an introduction but he has touched on several important aspects of meditation, such as breathing, scanning the body and focusing. Obviously he would go into them more deeply in his later sessions. Many meditations include mantras or visualisation. I do think the animations, which would not normally be included, are excellent and could make more of an impression than the spoken word on some people.

I'm here, guys. Wow. I didn't realize that so many had a comment on this MC. My email wasn't giving me notifications. Grrrr.

I will revisit today. Paolina...did you want to do this one again? Is that what you meant?

I think I'm a bit of an emotional eater plus, I have had portion distortion pretty bad in the past. I wanted some meal plans that were already designed for me this time. Typically, that is not me and frankly, the SP meal plans didn't thrill me (too much dairy and stuff I can't eat) so I bought the BeyondDiet program for $37 or some such. I've been on it for the last two months.

Basically, it's like Minnie said, it's eating clean. Nothing from a can, bag or box, no pre-prepared foods, no wheat (except for the occasional piece of sprouted bread), no grains, no pasta, not many carbs, no processed sugar. I think I was addicted to sugar. I have lost 23 pounds since the day after Christmas, 18 since I started BeyondDiet.

Down to 150 now and feel terrific. :D

why is reading while eating more distracting than talking to companion? i eat lots when i have company, i guess because i put more out. when i read, i just finish what's on my plate, which is what i would do if i wasn't reading.

This is a great challenge! I had the worst eating week I've had in a really long time. I know I used food for comfort. Thank you for this challenge.

Hi Minnie,
The ebook came with an unwanted app-reader. I have been making screenshots so that I don't need the app. Tomorrow I will start reading.
I'm not sure if this is about %'s . I think it is about how you think about food. And becoming less emotional about it resulting in less over eating. I don't think I explained it very well, but it really sounds very interesting.
You get exercises to overcome "unwanted" eating.

Here is a screenshot from the introduction:

ingrid, can you summarize the actual diet. what % protein, carbs, fats? how many calories? what non-food items? anything new besides cut out refined carbs and eat protein powder and veggies?

Interesting challenge, Lynn.

There are many meditation mp3s and CDs available to help with weight loss, usually encouraging people to use mantras and visualize themselves as having already achieved their goals. I don't use them but do use meditation for other reasons and believe it can change one's mood and, through that, behaviour.

I have only been on one diet, which was for health reasons and prescribed by a naturopath. It is no longer necessary but was very strict and has left me with a horror of tracking. However, I read a lot and am conscious of when I am eating the "wrong" things.

I would have to class myself as a nibbler and, to some extent, a reward or comfort eater.

I'm practicing right now the following. When I take a small bite of some food, I chew slowly and I will not do anything else simultaneously. This makes me impatient, because I want to read or be busy on the computer and now I have to wait. I stopped eating and chose the computer. I must have been really hungry, hahaha emoticon

Yes, I agree with you, Minnie. I just decided that I will eat my breakfast and lunch raw ( they are the easiest and I like them), and the rest of the day I will have whatever not so unhealthy food I want as long as it is planned. And I will make sure that it is food that I really enjoy. Minnie, thank you so much. It is very nice not to have to struggle alone.

I just typed in google: mindful eating pdf
And I got so much info. I have a bunch of downloaded pdf's to check out the coming days.

atkins is not healthful. raw food is extreme. how about just real food, as close to raw/natural as possible, in proper quantities. i'm overweight on healthful food, but more of it than i burn. it's not the occasional lapse when i am eating socially that does me in.

i agree. tracking opens our eyes and helps us keep "track" . but i don't like it. guess i have no choice. planning in advance and sticking to what i wrote works even better. sigh!

I'm a Nibbler for now. There was a time in my life where I was probably a Zombie.

Tracking everything I eat day to day is the best way I know to combat my nibbling tendencies. I think even when I am at my goal weight I will have to do this just to stay on track and not fall back into old habits.

I have had only 2 diets. Atkins and Fully raw. I lost a lot with Atkins. I could do that again, but I'd rather not eat meat anymore. Fully raw needs good planning. Important to bring enough food (fruit, veggie smoothies, dehydrated raw snacks) to work. Pie on one of the many birthday's at work is hard to resist. I eat when I'm tired or a bit unhappy (due to stupid stuff at work).

i'm a nibbler (and portion distortion). i keep reading about new diets, but don't adopt them. i lost when i followed The Zone. you're a diet junkie. how many have you been on? all diets work till you stop. trick is to find one we will maintain.
wonder why my library system has no copies of this book. it's been around a while. from reading online, it seems to apply mindulness to food. not a new concept, exactly. probably helps.

L, you had a successful strategy. revisit it. come post with us. each week you make us aware of a different aspect of a healthful lifestyle. and there is no forever cure if you don't keep it up to some extent. difference is that maintenance is less strict. some say 70% compliance instead of 100%. Occasional lapses may be more frequent. for emotional eaters, one must deal with the emotions underneath. food doesn't solve things.
now i'll go read what you sent. i think i know what my problems are, but i'll keep an open mind.

This week is week 4 in the rotation, so it's a self-esteem challenge and I've picked a new one. Since I lost 50 pounds and gained it all back over the span of 6.5 years, I'm doing some investigation into my relationship with food. What kind of eater am I? What happened to my healthy eating habits over that period of time? It has to be more than will power to maintain so that I'm not constantly feeling like I'm on a diet.

I felt, at one point, that I had made a lifestyle change but then what? Did I simply forget everything I had learned, or did my brain twist things so that I thought I was eating properly but wasn't? I don't know...so in searching for some answers I ran across this article about the Headspace diet.

It's apparently a book. I haven't read it, but I do like the article and it makes sense.

This weeks' MC is to read the article, determine what kind of eater you are, read the solution and let's discuss. Going forward, in the coming weeks, we can put some of the solutions to the test.

Let's get ourselves in the right head space to change our minds about food!

Hugs ya'll,
L.
