Weekends on SP--it doesn't really fit into my schedule!

But--it's 6:15 pm, and so far, so good. Out and about a lot today--so not a lot of temptation.

My snack today was some all natural, minimally processed pork jerky--once again, it was on my tongue, and I knew it was loaded with sugar. This is annoying--I find it hard enough to turn to protein snacks without the "hidden" sugars.

Other than that, I'm doing well.

My sugar cravings--typically I have found that they don't go away if I ignore them--they just get sneakier. I have to really, really be alert as the evening wears on not to 'unconciously' join family members in snacks or desserts. Depressing really!--although not on a day when I've managed to resist.

That said--today was a good day. Yay!

So hard, but I'm doing it. No sugar again last night. I got in the hot tub instead. :D No sugar at lunch today. Am drinking diet Snapple from the Kuerig instead.

I find that if I have a craving for a sweet snack immediately after eating and can wait for a bit before giving in, it goes away. Shew!!

Last night I made a beautiful chicken salad with dried cranberries and sliced almonds. Ate it on a bed of lettuce with a side of steamed broccoli and rutabagas. Yum!

I'm holding my own today!

Shine on, peeps!

Hi LB--and everyone!

To some extent, this whole thing--weightloss--is about cycles. It's not about eliminating "bad" behaviors--it's about getting those bad behaviors under control.

Personally speaking, I am coming off of three frustrating weeks. I lost ten pounds in the first two months I returned to SP, and then... I feel like I've put all those ten pounds back on. Maybe... maybe even I *have* put those ten pounds back on.

But the bigger truth is that I am a lot healthier now than I was back in mid-September. My mood this week has brightened, and some truly awful stress that I was dealing with in my family has been relieved. I'm not happy with the past three weeks, the way I haven't taken care of myself. But I'm at a better RE-starting place.

It's going to be a long (and here in Minnesota cold!) winter. I'm of course kicking myself for not getting going on taking care of myself back in May. But... I'd personally like to continue getting back into physical health over the winter. I know it's going to be hard, and my (aging) metabolism certainly isn't cooperating--but, more than "I'd like to," I have to do it.

The sugar thing is HARD HARD HARD. I'm hearing the siren call. I'm telling myself "it's only two more days!" (until the 6th). It's harder than giving up caffeine, and getting the migrane headaches. Those--I just decided "I'll put up with those, and get through it." This sugar thing is SO much sneakier.

This said--on the 6th, my plan is NOT to buy myself a huge slice of cherry pie (or whatever) and stick my guzzling face into it! We'll see how it goes--but I'm hoping a week of "detoxing" myself will bring down my need.

I am drinking A LOT of Trader Joe's "Harvest Blend Herbal Tea," which I discovered two days ago. It's got cinnamon, ginger, hibiscus, a bunch of "natural" flavorings, chamomile, roasted chicory, and orange peel. Wow if you brew that tea for long enough, it tastes sweet.

For now, I'm keeping the sugar in my morning coffee (yes, after I went through all the caffeine withdrawal and six months of no coffee, I decided to go back), but that's it.

LB--thank you for giving me a mini-challenge that I am struggling with, but seem to be able to complete. Two more days of focus! I can do it.

Gave up diet soda quite a while ago. I do buy Zevia soda that is sweetened with stevia but rarely drink that. Had a diet pepsi at Dad's on Thanksgiving and it was the strangest tasting thing. Really wanted to dump it for water or black coffee but did not want to be wasteful of Dad's groceries. I never thought i would lose a taste for diet soda like that but i am glad i did.

So i am sitting here eating a fabulous dinner sent to work by my hubby. Apple, walnuts almonds, sandwich with brie and home made cranberry sauce. And 4 little bite sized gingerbread cookies sent from Germany. I detect sugar in sauce and cookies. This is hard for me than i thought. Lesson learned? Feelings. Hubby loves me and my mommy in germany loves me and it tastes sooo good. I have unsweetened tea to get me through the evening shift. And the cookies i just bought will become a gift for a colleague.

Ok, I did it. I mean, I didn't do it! emoticon There is chocolate in the house. I've been eating a couple small pieces every night after supper because that's when I crave sweets but last night, I had a tangerine instead and was fine. Yay me!

That may seem so small but it was definitely hard and I'm glad I didn't cave in.

The "fake" creamer...I get it...I love me some non-dairy flavored creamer. How did I give it up? I had to give up coffee altogether! Shocker, right? I switched to hot tea with honey. Honey is all natural but it's still a sugar, so I have to try and go lightly but I definitely enjoy it...with lemon too. emoticon

I wanted a Kind Bar today after lunch. Nope. Too many sugars. I'm having an afternoon hot tea with honey and not chocolates.

Last night I ate a scrumptious chicken burger made with basil pesto & pieces of Kalamata olives with a teensy bit of feta sprinkled on top. Then I had a kale salad on the side. So yum.

I also went and bought a ton of fresh veggies...no "fake" suger in those!!!

Baby steps, baby steps.

Also, I want to thank you all for the personal notes and page posts. They have really meant so much to me as I struggle through feeling completely incompetent to lead a weight loss team right now.

Hugs,
L.

Okay, I'm definitely tap-dancing here to distract myself from my sugar urge... Back in early November, I had things under control--but truly, I think the cold weather here must be a factor in all that unhealthiness surging back.

Hidden sugar: I didn't think about it until I had it on my tongue yesterday... but I'm quite sure the deli ham I was eating was full of sugar. I just went on Boar's Head's website, where they have a list of their sugar-free meats (I'm sure Boar's head is similar to other products in this regard...). My lunch meat options would be... roast beef or certain types of frankfurters.

Other than that... I'm trying to stave off my sugar urges with... indulgent deli-counter olives (major salt) and unprocessed sugars eg fruit. I am doing well in that I have not cracked... but today is definitely unpleasant!

How is everyone else doing?

glad to see members here. welcome to newbies.

yesterday someone gave out chocolates at work. i didn't eat any!!!!

there are always small chocolate bars on the secretary's desk. i've been resisting them lately. they haven't been screaming at me.

yes, sugar hides in plain sight, in addition to what's in most innocent looking processed food.

Yes, that would be mini challenge. I was conscious of hidden sugars yesterday, but did eat some chocolate as a snack. I did all my own cooking, though, so made everything as healthy as can be.

Hi LB!

Thanks for writing on my page yesterday--and thanks for wading in again and restarting. It's what I'm currently needing! That said--you're restarting with... probably the LEAST FUN mini-challenge in the world...

No--I get it. It's the needed thing. The kickstarter. The "calories in" white elephant. The metabolism killer, the... Yes, actually, I can do it. I'm on--at least through the 6th!

I'm at a similar state to where you are. I know how to do this--lose the weight I need--but keeping my eye on that prize is not easy. I have three kids, two in training as athletes. Their nutritional needs are different than mine, to say the least!

In any case... again, thanks. I'm new here, so I'll see what I can do to bring good energy here!

Hey....I'm a newbie here, so thanks for having this no sugar/HFCS challenge. It's perfect for me this week, as I have a holiday potluck for work on Friday...really really need to just say no to goodies. I'm bringing a salad...yum! I find that when I get socked in working a lot, and have less time to cook or even shop for groceries...that is my downfall. So to succeed I have to keep healthy things around...the second part of my self-imposed mini-challenge. Glad to join this group...great timing!

BTW, what is an MC? thx.

Have a great day,

Nancy

Sugar? That one is hard, but I guess I will definitely have to start reading those labels. I don't read them religiously, but I do read some.

Hello all! Where have I been???? So lost....I've gained all my weight back and I feel like such a loser. Here is where I need to start over. Here is where it begins again for me. I've said it before. I will try my damnest to stick to it. I'm tired of feeling guilty for leaving you all hanging for these last weeks. I did try to find someone to take over the Team but alas, no takers. I'm going to begin posting again. I MUST do something for myself and if it means I need to make this a priority again, well, so be it. I'm posting this MC because I've been shoving chocolates in my face. Ugh. Here we go.......

Bottom line: Sugar, well too much refined sugar, sucrose, fructose, etc. is not good for you! And it's in just about everything these days! It's important to check labels before buying and ingesting!local paper. Intake of too much sugar, and especially items with High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) can be detrimental to my body and my diet. More so than I even knew way back then.

We cannot stop the barrage of chocolate and other sweet delectables that flood the market every perceived holiday but we CAN take control and win the war for ourselves, our health and our bodies. This weeks MC is to keenly watch the amount of refined sugar, fructose, glucose & HFCS that we ingest into our bodies. It's in much, much more than just chocolate & other sweet stuff.

Now, and here's the tricky part, HFCS can be lurking in places that you might not realize they are. For instance there is loads of HCFS in canned sodas (we broke that cycle 2 weeks ago, yes?), in breakfast cereals, in ketchup and in snack bars & power bars. So, your MC is to read labels & choose wisely!

For 5 days out of the 7 this MC is in effect, make a substitution of a healthy snack when you find too much HFCS, refined sugar, glucose or fructose in a food that you might otherwise have eaten had you not been paying attention.

Report in this Forum exactly where you are finding the hidden sugar in your diet and what substitution you made so that it can help us all!!!

Also, did you know that refined sugar is THE number one offender in causing 'belly fat'? Ewwww....and we just finished all those crunches! Don't let all that work go to waste!

Read this one page SP article about sugar substitutions: tinyurl.com/2ztmmr

Read more about HCFS and why it's harmful: tinyurl.com/pnz36

Read about breakfast cereal scams & how much sugar there really IS in the morning staple:
tinyurl.com/32w78g

Don't forget to get your 3 points EACH for reading the articles.....above all, have fun with this and enjoy your week.

Hugs ya'll and remember to Say No to HFCS!

L.
