i track on fitday and it says 8mg is 100% for me. i am post menopausal.
i made it yesterday and today.
if i'm allowed unlimited calories, i can get 100% of anything. calories are my problem. too much nutritious food.

Dang Minnie! You are on fire! I got 60-something percent yesterday. Unless I eat some iron pills between now and dinner, I'm on track to only get about 43% today. :(

in general, food is better. we don't know what other things come along with the iron to help the body use it. but there are those who say meat isn't healthful (especially in quantity, or not organic grass fed, free pasture). it's quite controversial. you're certainly not cheating.

I can't figure out how to view iron in milligrams. It is only showing it to me as a percentage. I don't typically feel like cereal is a healthy meal, but last week, I realized that Honey Bunches of Oats does not have HFCS, and this week I realized that 1.25 cups has 100% of my daily recommended value of iron. Is it okay to get your iron from fortified sources like cereal, or is it better to get it from natural sources like spinach and red meat? Well, I think it's probably BETTER to get it from veggies & meat, but am I "cheating" on this challenge by getting my iron from cereal? I'll try to do better to get iron from other sources this week.

So now, on to the 2nd Intake Challenge in the monthly rotation! Did you know that nearly 70% of Americans don't get enough of iron as a nutrient?

Iron is a mineral that is important to all body cells. It is particularly important for blood cells because iron is needed to make hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the protein in blood cells that carries oxygen to body tissues. This was taken from a website:

"If you don't have enough iron you may develop iron deficiency anemia, a condition in which your blood contains less hemoglobin than normal. People who have iron deficiency anemia are often tired and lack energy."

Iron deficiency anemia may also result from a diet that lacks enough iron blood loss body changes during pregnancy.
