I know this challenge is over, but I read that blackstrap molasses has lots of iron.
1 tablespoon in a cup of warm milk, almond milk, etc. Also good iced.
I bought some today and will try a cup a day. That will give me enough to bring my % up to 50% which is all I need for my age.

Thank you for mentioning the foods you ate to reach your percentage. That is helping me to change my meal plans.

I'm mostly vegetarian, so I am often under my iron recommendation. I do get a lot of it from fortified cereals and oatmeal, but a veggie chili with lots of beans helped this week, and also, the Morningstar Farms "Chik'n" nuggets.

I had 65 yesterday.

Thank you, Minnie, that was really helpful. I will try to incorporate those foods into my diet. Guess I should have asked earlier this week! : )

May I please ask what you are eating to raise your iron levels. Mine stay really low.

I was trying to give up cereal, bread (hard), pasta, crackers…pretty much all grain products that are high in carbs. So I'm not eating enriched grain products. I tried a protein meal replacement shake, but my body couldn't handle the whey protein.
I do eat chicken, meat, etc, but my portions are small, by choice and my body's capacity.

Do I just need to take a supplement of some sort?

Thank you for this challenge, as I never realized I ate so little iron containing food.

I obviously don't eat the right foods for iron. I usually end up around 28 or 29 on the tracker. I think I'll have some beans tomorrow!

If you click the Info button next to Iron on your Nutrition Goals (like, when you click on "Edit Nutrition Goals," and you get the list of things you track, there's an info button next to most of them), this is what it says:

"Recommended Intake: For men aged 19 and older and women 51 and older who are not menstruating, 10 mg is all that is needed. Menstruating women between 19 and 50 need 15 mg daily. Pregnant women need 30 mg daily, but breastfeeding women only need 15 mg. Iron deficiency can cause anemia, a condition in which the body's cells do not receive enough oxygen. Symptoms include weakness, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue and irritability. Some studies show that too much iron buildup in the body can lead to coronary heart disease and some cancers."

I'm 63, and the Spark article said women over 50 only need 8 milligrams of iron a day.

I was also confused by the nutrient tracker which just says 100%-150% as the daily goal, but no mg amounts. There are so many ranges needed by different people depending on age, sex, pregnant, lactating, etc. I wonder what they are basing the 100% RDA for the goal?

Also, the food tracker and labels don't mention the milligrams, only the percentage of some unknown RDA amount.

Help!

Cool, I'm in. I don't really eat meat, so I already track iron as an extra nutrient here, and I often am low daily.

How did you do on the HFCS challenge? Did it open your eyes? A little maybe?

So now, on to the 2nd Intake Challenge in the monthly rotation! Did you know that nearly 70% of Americans don't get enough of iron as a nutrient?

Iron is a mineral that is important to all body cells. It is particularly important for blood cells because iron is needed to make hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the protein in blood cells that carries oxygen to body tissues. This was taken from a website:

"If you don't have enough iron you may develop iron deficiency anemia, a condition in which your blood contains less hemoglobin than normal. People who have iron deficiency anemia are often tired and lack energy."

Iron deficiency anemia may also result from a diet that lacks enough iron blood loss body changes during pregnancy.

And check this out www.irondisorders.org/iron-deficienc

Did you know it could also you help with your energy level?

This week's MC, is for us to "transform" for 5 of the 7 days this MC is in effect.

Add Iron as a nutrient to your tracker. You'll notice we should be taking in as much as 18 milligrams per day. Track your iron daily and report your progress here!

Here's a SP article to read and get 3 points from to: tinyurl.com/2xk4ag

Here's another very interesting article about iron, how much we need and what it does for the body:
