I had never read her before starting the first one recently. I'm finding them great at night since they're a tougher read, they tend to help me get sleepy. I don't know what I'll do after Emma. I'm considering reading some philosophy.

I will miss this thread!

I love Jane Austen. Her books are waiting for me.

The Nguyen book looks good too. I just ordered the sample.

That sounds fascinating.

I just finished Sense and Sensibility a week or so ago, and started Pride and Prejudice. I'd never read Jane Austen at all. Funny thing, so far I like Sense and Sensibility better even though P&P is everyone's favorite.

I've also never seen any of the movies! I did enjoy Austenland, though. Cracked me up. It's pretty funny, and a rom-com but I'd say heavier in the com than the rom. It even made my husband and mother in law both laugh out loud.

Oooh, that's fabulous advice! So the CBS All Access is actually local news, not national news? I want a single news station for fire coverage (we have a lot of very dangerous fire storms here), but don't really want to keep paying $65/mo for it.

I do like it. However, hulu has gone from showing one recommendations that one would actually like to cramming your screen full of crap. You have to work to find the good stuff. That being said, they have some great Hulu Original productions.

I bought the Hulu with no ads for 11.99$ per month. I tried live with no ads, but got tons of ads on the live shows and it was way too expensive at $60 per month. I opted into CBS All Access (now Paramount+) for about $9.99 per month, and I get my local CBS channel for my news. I love it, and it has the best Star Trek show, ST Discovery. Hence, I pay about $22 per month to get a "live" TV channel. I only wanted it for local news anyway.

Right now, I am on Netflix watching Behind Her Eyes. Two words. Wow and ominous.

@AKA_TROUBLE I was trying to find Regina Richards. Honestly, I didn't look super hard. I just followed a link to her website and it hadn't been updated in years so I didn't look further. She may be on FB or even self-published on Amazon, but I didn't go look.

I am reading Seanan McGuire's latest Incryptid book - Calculated Risks. When I finish that, I will move on to the 3rd book in the Jane Lindskold series about the child raised by wolves on an alternate Earth with magic. Firekeeper series - love it!

Which author were you trying to look up from the anthology, @AAAACK ?

I went back to reading my 2017 (or was it 2016?) anthology of sci-fi shorts. I really enjoyed another of the stories and tried to look up the author, but it looks like her website hasn't been updated since 2017. I liked her characters a lot.

I just started a new-to-me book series - first book is called "Through Wolf's Eyes" by Jane Lindskold. There are 6 books in the original series and she wrote 2 more recently. Binge-reading makes me happy.

I also enjoy the Brit shows, and have since my teenage years (oh so long ago). I'm glad they're much more readily available these days than they were back then.

Lately I keep finding series I really enjoy, then when I look, they turn out to be Canadian. I believe I'm Canadian TV's biggest American fan, LOL.

I've been binge watching Travelers. I'm sad to know it's canceled. I really have been enjoying it, and was hoping it could be a new ongoing series for me. I just fell in love with the characters and want them in my TV room every night! Kind of feels like Firefly did, where you just fall in love and then feel sad when it's over.

PrincessFloralindaandtheForty-FlightTower

It's a tongue-in-cheek, twisted re-telling of Rapunzel and so far is very funny.

Klaus on Netflix is really great! I have enjoyed a modern Christmas movie in a long time!

I opted into CBS Access to watch Star Trek, and they have a live CBS local channel for me! Love!

Next, I will start Little Dorritt on Amazon Prime. It looks good.

If you opt into the free week on Brit box, The Mill was a great series!

We bought a gift subscription of Britbox for my MIL and I wanted to watch so much of what they said was on there! Maybe one week, I'll do the free trial and then cancel it. I don't want to pay for any more TV than we already have. In fact, YouTube TV went up so much in price that as soon as we catch up on a few things we DVR'd (prob not a real verb, LOL) we're going to cancel it and just go back to Dish or DirecTV for the same price. I'm shocked to hear Hulu is also ridiculous now.

We tend to watch Netflix more than anything, and Disney+ for Mandalorian. But I really feel like I need local channels to get live coverage of big fires during fire season. I hate trying to figure everything out from Twitter. I want to SEE what's going on, not read some stranger's description of it. I want to know whether to pack the car!

I haven't been watching much besides Anne with an E with the hubby. We're surprised that we enjoy it, but we do. Tonight after he went to bed, I clicked on the #1 on Netflix movie, and it's not really very good. I can't believe it's #1. I'm not even sure I'll finish watching it.

I am trying a free 7 day course of Philo which offers around 50 channels of live TV for $20. The Science channel has some interesting stuff!

Unsure if I will keep it, but it is better than Hulu's $60 live tv price which I cancelled.

Amazon Prime has London Hospital! It is based on true reports/notes/diaries of East London in the late 1800s. It is a very interesting show with excellent actors! I am going to rewatch it.

I bet that toilet paper mercedes person is going to try to sell the TP at an inflated price! That's what some jerks do.

Watched: Magic Camp (Netflix), watching Gemini Man, Dark, Rain, and a Russian show ...what's it called... something like To The Lake, I think.

Reading: my to do list, over and over again. This time of year wigs me OUT. But I did see that Michael Manning has a new book out, and I enjoyed his early ones. I may pick back up where I left off with him. He's one of the few SF new authors I've kept up with. I also like Jodi McIssac.

Decluttering, yes. But sometimes right after I declutter, my husband fills up the nice neat empty space with some drek or other. I'm currently just trying to live among the chaos here, and trying to create little islands of ...not-chaos, LOL

Lockdown - we're in it too, again. We're on the highest tier of lockdown in our county, but we can still go to parks to exercise, and several things are open. TP is hard to find again. As are some basics.

We were driving home from a hike the other day, and a fancy Mercedes screeched down the shoulder of the road past the backup of people waiting patiently to get to the freeway on ramp. What was his car packed to the roof with? Toilet Paper!

Kerry: your book collection sounds positively sublime! You've met some amazing authors, it sounds like!

I bought "The Yellow Wallpaper," a book written in the late 1800s on Amazon for $1. You can probably find it for free at the Gutenberg Project, but I like having the kindle version of it as it keeps my place for me.

I was excited to find it!

Check out the Gutenberg Project. You can find a lot of very old free books there.

I am watching a few episodes of the Dick Van Dyke Show on Hulu at present, with Rose Marie and Morey Amsterdam! I loved watching that show when I was very young, around 3 or 4.

I also watch an episode of Frasier now and again.

In terms of decluttering, I've found that grabbing a few things out if drawers work quite well to donate or toss. I get overwhelmed easily if I try to go through everything. Perfection is my enemy when it comes to decluttering. It is amazing how much better a room or area can look when you just run through and grab a few things.

Depends on the room. In the kitchen - yeah, one drawer or cupboard at a time unless there is very little in that space. I am currently packing for a move early next year and some things go in the donation box instead of in the packing box.

Lisa - My McCaffreys are mostly HC - 3 whole books I managed to squeeze into my luggage when I worked the Nebulas the year she was made Grand Master and got those signed. I have a lot of books by the authors you mentioned as that is my primary reading - fantasy and SF. I also have signed F.E.s of the entire House Wars series by Michelle West - except for the last two which she wrote after the last time I saw her. When I get unpacked again at the new house I will need to check - I frequently get books when they first come out if it's an author I read, so many are probably F.E.s of the newer ones. Newer meaning less than 30 years old.

Kerry, most of my first editions are fantasy, Eddings (not Belgariad HB first, sadly) and Feist in hardback, possibly some Kurtz. In paperback, I have a lot of first editions in many different authors of sci-fi and fantasy. Eddings, Feist, Kurtz, Herbert, McCaffrey, LeGuin, Foster, just to name a few. And some PG Wodehouse collectibles as well (likely not firsts). But I bought them piecemeal and read them, so they're not in mint condition, although the hardbacks don't look like they've been read, not even to the trained eye! And always dust jackets. The paperbacks were read without cracking the spine and except for some natural foxing of the pages, and edge-wear from shelves, they don't look read. Yes. Book Nerd Here! But working in a store that handled antiquarian as well as specializing in first editions of sci-fi fantasy was bound to wear off on me!

I have some other oddlings as far as first editions. As I get ready to purge them, I'll let you know what I have.

What can I do for myself today?

Keep the books u love the most, as the kindle version is sometimes truncated, and they don't tell you.

The Unexpurgated Code by JP Donleavy is a great book but they took out about a third of the book on the kindle version, and the funniest part of the book!

I would be ok if they disclosed that, but they didn't. It is a very hard to find the book now. I love anything JP Donleavy. It's probably where I got my sense of humor as both my parents read those weirdly funny books.

When my first shoulder went out, I had to switch to smaller purses because well, if there's room, I'll fill it!

I'm actually about to look into selling some of my first editions off. I love them, but after I'm gone, nobody settling my estate will have any idea what's not thrift store fodder. And I'd rather put the books into hands of other book lovers. I know, I'm weird. LOL

I work on a computer 8+ hours a day - I want a real book. I never go anywhere without one. The joys of a large purse.

I think that, even though my love for print books runs deeper than I can describe, my lifestyle right now lends itself more to Kindle because I can start a read on my computer, switch to my phone without having to do anything fancy, and pick it up again pretty much anywhere I can sign into amazon. For a while I read on an iPad mini. But I do like the portability.

Congrats on your kindle, Minnie! I always thought I preferred paper, too, but the ease of reading on my phone had me hooked, especially if I am waiting for an appointment. The kindle app will let you read from your phone too!

Be active, books are like friends to me too. I was a big bookworm as a kid. Those were the days of three TV channels and most of them with fuzzy reception. emoticon

Aaack, so happy you can start reading some again with your busy schedule! emoticon

I am rewatching Downton Abbey on Amazon Prime

I am finishing watching Upstairs/Downstairs (the original 1970s version) on Brit Box

I am also reading a Jack London Book, People of the Abyss.

Yes, I am going through my East London, late 1800s through 1920 phase.

I just finished reading "Asleep" about the sleeping sickness in around 1918, and yes, for whatever reason, I love medical history.

That's how I ended up working in a bookstore for several years. I was a customer who'd go there every chance I got and just get lost in there. Finally they asked me if I wanted to work there. I didn't even have to think twice.

I remembered the other movie I watched - What We Did On Our Holiday. It was also on Amazon Prime Video, I think.

Thanks for the author recommend. I looked her up and at least one of her books is available on Kindle Unlimited (which I treated myself to since so many books to help my son were available on it, it seemed a good bargain). I'm going to add the K. Unlimited one to my wish list (it's like a library, you can only check out 10 books at a time).

Minnie, I wanted to ask you a question about something. I was watching a movie with a library (in England) and they said you had to be a member to get books out. And it seemed that membership cost money. But surely there are free public libraries in England, are there also private libraries? At first I'd thought it a movie set in the past, but then there was a sign in the library asking people to silence their mobile devices. The movie was This Beautiful Fantastic (on Amazon Prime Video).

I also watched The Bookshop and ...argh there was another one, but I can't remember at the moment. Still haven't managed to slip any pleasure reading in lately b/c the movies are on while I'm doing other things. I can't do other things while reading, and haven't found any free time lately.

I used to work in a bookstore. So I read all the time. I didn't watch TV for many years. In fact, when I got a job in an office, and people were chatting about TV shows, I was clueless. I only saw Friends in reruns! LOL.

So no, I didn't make book reading goals because I never stopped reading. And then when I began homeschooling, my ability to find time for my own enjoyment (reading or otherwise) went out the window.

I'm beginning to throw in a fun read now from time to time, even though I'm still teaching my son. And my reading goals are currently to read a certain daily number of minutes of something I don't really enjoy reading (like the anger books).

If they have it again, I'll let you know.

I did Beat Saber last night (VR headset) rather than watch TV. Then I read a bit of

This book has calming techniques I can use for every person in the family, but especially teaching my son to use them!

Then a friend from my online gaming days contacted me and we had such a nice chat.

Right after the lockdowns began in March, Kindle had hundreds of free books. I downloaded a bunch of them. It will take me years to read them all. I imagine some will be skip-its after I begin them. But some will be at least a little readable.

Good news on your daughter!

Yes, clothing that feels soft makes me feel happy, and things that fit well and don't make me squirm all day can make me feel empowered as well as beautiful. It may sound funny, but it's absolutely true. Nice fabrics, and then knowing I look on the outside how I feel on the inside (or how I want to feel) goes a long way.

I didn't used to think that was true for me until COVID. But as I sat around all day in PJ style clothes, like seriously lounge-worthy, I began to feel less and less like doing anything at all. Getting up and getting dressed in something I find nice to touch and to look at has energized me in a way I could never have expected.

I'm still not sure what my style is, it'll be my own, for sure, but I do know that what I've been wearing for the past 10 years or so doesn't bring me joy. So I've watched several YouTube videos from women over 40, 50, and 60 who do short fashion videos. Some are plus sized women, some medium, some twigs. Some I like, some I don't. But that's how I'll figure out what I'm going to do for myself when I finally go out shopping again. I'll finally have a bunch of images in my head.

I NEVER paid any attention to what other people wore. I mean none. I saw their faces, and personalities, not their bodies. I've never really paid attention to what size or weight I think someone might be. That sort of thing just never entered my mind. As a result, I didn't really look at what people wear. I get an overall impression of who looks nice all the time, who dresses like a hooker, who looks invisible.

But I never really paid attention to what elements gave me that impression. Now, as I've been looking at these videos, I'm realizing that I only looked at faces. But then...the personalities emerge and that's all I see. I hardly ever notice when someone wears a different lipstick or changes their hair. I guess, my whole life, I've just skipped over all image-related thoughts. But now, I'm interested in putting on clothes that make me FEEL good, make me feel alive, cohesive, capable, functional. And I also want things that (to me) look and feel beautiful.

As I've struggled more and more, especially through my son's teen years, I find I have a need to envelop myself in beauty. Not for the sake of looking a certain way, but for helping myself FEEL at peace, and empowered, all at the same time.

So, I keep watching these videos, not obsessively or anything, just here and there. And I find things that I think yes, that gives me the feeling I seek. Now, the trick will be trying it on my own lumpy old body and deciding if I still feel that feeling.

Whew this is a long post!

I used to watch house stuff but then realized it was making me too anxious about my own house and things I mean to get to, but rarely find time for.

At the moment, I've been watching Canadian and English movies. I find the pacing far more relaxing than most of the "edgy" stuff I see on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

My husband even laughed and relaxed watching over my shoulder, a movie called The Grand Seduction (not about sex). It was a comedy, and fun. Also watched recently The Bookshop, Under the Tuscan Sun, and that's about it. Mostly I'm just trying to get more done on my to-do list!

And am still reading books on anger/behavior management. Not much fun, definitely need to watch mellow movies after that!

That all sounds cool. I'll have to look into it at some point.

And I really hope they find some solutions for your daughter soon. How harrowing.

What's the 12 week year like? Do you feel like it helps?

I'm glad your daughter is out of the hospital and they've found a meds formula to help her.

I'm back to reading several things I've already mentioned, but never finished.
