Thank you for the explanation. I have read of fasts many times and they drank fruit juice, but I knew that would not work for what you are doing, which is why I asked.

Let's define the term. Fasting means not eating, so zero calories. I can drink anything I want as long as it does not contain calories.

I personally drink black coffee, iced green tea, flavored water etc. NO BONE BROTH! That contains proteins and calories.

The next thing to understand is that the objective in this case is to drive down the blood sugar in order to drive down the insulin, in order to lower my insulin resistance. For this purpose a ketogenic diet "mimics fasting" as Dr Fung describes it.

IOW I have two primary objectives and a third tertiary objective.

1) Lose weight long term. To do this I truly need to fast. The reasons are discussed in Dr Fung's videos (there are dozens of them) but have to do with tricking the body into UPPING the resting metabolic rate. Restricted calorie diets (the normal thing everybody does) causes the body to think it is starving and causes REDUCED resting metabolic rate, and a slingshot effect when you stop "dieting".

2) Reduce my insulin resistance. For us Diabetics, this one is critical. We need to drive down blood glucose and keep it down for long periods. For this purpose, a fast is actually NOT required, you can do this with an extremely low (high glycemic index) carb diet, i.e. a "keto" diet. However, if you aren't eating anything (fasting) then you are by definition not eating carbs, LGI or otherwise.

3) Obtain autophagy. This is a cellular repair mechanism and is triggered by zero caloric intake over longer periods of time. Fasting is absolutely required to get here.

So yes, while fasting I drink only non-caloric liquids. Not even cream in my coffee. It appears that the body cannot tell if I consume very low calories (a few in some cream) BUT... my mind tends to not keep track very well and so it is easier and more bullet proof to just avoid all calories during the fast. That said, During a LONG fast if I need to do so in order to keep going (for weight loss or insulin resistance) I will eat one egg every 24 hours, during a hunger wave. Yep, it "kicks me out of fasting" and so the autophagy stops, but my other two objectives continue unabated,

Do yourself a favor and do your own research. There is a ton of info out there now about Intermittent Fasting (IF) as well as Ketogenic diets. The two together is simply KILLER for dealing with our diabetes!!!

BTW we have an entire TEAM for fasting. Join us over there to discuss and read about that. And we have an entire TEAM for Low Carb and Keto diet. Join us over there to discuss and read about that.

When you are doing the fasts, do you just drink water or how do you do them?

You're welcome. Dr Fung makes it clear that having diabetes is a choice. It is not an easy thing curing diabetes, but at least today I can talk about simply not having diabetes at some point in the near future.

I am on my way to that goal. I have spent hours studying intermittent fasting, and more hours studying ketogenic diets. Those two things are the keys to, not controlling, but eliminating my disease.

I have learned that being in the ketogenic state is the key to burning fat when I am eating. It is the key to lowering and ultimately eliminating my insulin resistance, CURING my disease. I have learned that fasting (beyond 12 hours) places me in ketosis and thus a state where my body burns it's own fat, AND is driving down my insulin resistance.

I have learned that calorie restricted diets just flat don't work, can't work, and IT'S NOT MY FAULT. And I have learned that I can actually do something about the mess I have made of my body by my eating choices over the dozens of years that I was ignorant.

I am down 50 pounds. I am able to be in ketosis whenever I wish. I am able to EASILY do a 16/8 intermittent fast. I am able to EASILY do a 23/1 IF. I have fasted for up to 72 hours. I know WHY I fast and how to fast and what to eat when I am not fasting. And I do not live in hunger and cravings.

My life is now lived in hope, but more importantly also in ACTION.

I intentionally made the original post attention grabbing and disturbing. Because the result of "old style" of Diabetes management is inevitable death. And not a pretty death. A very painful death. As long as you are alive it is not too late.

So join me in getting off that train.

Watch Dr Fung.

He is a kidney doctor who treated Diabetes "the wrong way" for many years before he finally understood that he was killing his patients. And decided to figure out how to treat the disease itself.

Then the deadly cycle begins. You go to the doctor who discovers the SYMPTOMS of insulin resistance, i.e. High blood glucose. Your doctor begins to treat the symptoms, almost inevitably by throwing drugs at the high glucose levels. Most of the drugs are designed to increase the insulin levels. Which does several things.

I am agree with you, level of sugar in blood is symptom of diabetes. So, what is the cause?
Now, another time I am agree with you, treat the symptoms is wrong. So, what is the treatment for diabetes type 2?
Diet. What is it? When we fasting we reduce level of sugar in blood, right, treat symptom of diabetes. So, diet cannot work. When we start to eat our sugar rise up, so there is no one cure or reverse for diabetes with this type of treatment.
Looks like you have no one idea what do you talking about.

Diabetes is a major cause of high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease and failure, neuropathy, blindness, gangrene in the extremeties resulting in amputation.

Sounds positively yummy. And yet today doctors do not treat diabetes, they treat the symptoms. They tell you that your disease is chronic and progressive. They rarely say so but they know you will eventually die a gruesome death.

And so we come here to talk about the weather, discuss anything and everything except curing our disease.

Type 2 Diabetes is insulin resistance. Let that sink in. That fact is the key to not dying a gruesome death.

98% of the time insulin resistance is INITIALLY caused by diet, specifically high levels of high glycemic index carbs consumed over a long period of time. Cookies, cakes, pizza, pasta, bread, chips, rice, refined carbs by any name.

1) It makes you fat (er).
2) It increases your insulin resistance.
3) it lowers your glucose levels!

The doctor claims success because the SYMPTOMS got better.

Except you are getting worse. You're gaining weight. Your blood glucose is climbing.

More drugs to treat the symptoms ( high glucose) by... Raising the insulin levels.

And round and round.

It turns out that while high glucose levels are bad, high insulin levels are even worse. So while the symptoms are getting better the disease is getting worse. And you die a gruesome death.

Because the doctor is making the disease, insulin resistance, worse by constantly raising the insulin levels. Once that cycle begins, the insulin itself makes the insulin resistance worse.

I write this because it is in fact possible to reverse the disease, by treating the CAUSE which by this time is the ever escalating levels of insulin. In order to do this you have to REDUCE the insulin levels. You do this by firing the doctor who is busy killing you. Then you stop eating high glycemic index carbs. You attack the disease with diet. Diet initially caused the disease, diet will cure the disease.

You stop the nonsensical "six meals of refined carbs a day" (plus snacks). You stop the nonsensical "inject insulin to lower glucose" mantra. And you stop eating all day and half the night. You stop listening to sparkpeople telling you deadly wrong information.

You study your disease. You study and implement intermittent fasting. You study and implement ketogenic diets.

Your disease reverses itself and you live a long and healthy life.

The end.

Or you choose to ride the diabetic train to it's inevitable and gruesome conclusion.

Join me in getting off the train.
