Yeah, but I gave it a "try" for 2 or 3 years and I felt so terrible! I am so glad the doctor figured it out!

I guess in the end, it all boils down to us all being different... sometimes the only way to know is to give it a try...

I was also on the extended release. I guess having IBS it hits me more than it would otherwise. When it was first prescribed it was for the regular metformin, but with the medical program they only covered was the extended release. When I was on 1000, though, I had to take it twice a day instead of all at once like it said to or else it really made me sick.

Yeah, not sure why there is such a marked difference between the er and xr. I feel like they do x because it's less expensive

My doctor took me off the Metformin after a few years because of the problem of diarhhea. She thought maybe it would stop my IBS problems, but just slowed them a little. It's supposed to have the lowest side effects of the non-insulin meds, I think. At least it's what I've read. I have been trying to get my carbs down since then, because the other meds work like insulin for the most of them and I live alone so don't want to risk going too low. Then, too, just about all of them have side effects of kidney problems, heart problems, possible cancer, etc. and I don't want to risk those things, either.

ILARIAMARCUCCI That's why I put this on here, if I would of had any idea that it was the Metformin that made me feel this way, I would have asked the doctor about it.

I.M.MAGIC How long were you on it before you stopped it? It's crazy, isn't it? Why don't doctors put 2 and 2 together and at least consider that it could be the Metformin. Glad you are doing good now!

My doctor took me off Metformin a LONG time ago. I thought I was PREGNANT! I threw up every morning, and several times during the day. Turns out my liver couldn't metabolize it or something, it was totally toxic for me.
I'm on insulin now. The needles were a bit intimidating at first, but after the first week, I was like "why didn't they do this in the first place?!" LOL
The nice thing is, when you swallow a pill, it's in your system and you are stuck with whatever happens, but with insulin, I can adjust dosages very easily if I crash or get higher than I'm supposed to. Doesn't mean I can eat whatever I want, but it gives me some piece of mind... and a lot less physical discomfort.

my proof reading skills aren't so good today LOL It's PEACE of mind...

No he didn't put me on another medication, I will be testing and at the diabetes class each week also. He said if I keep going the way I am and start exercising my A1C will continue to go down more. I feel so much better now! All these symptoms are what made me gradually cut back a lot on exercise!

My problems w/Metformin were mainly GI. But that smoothed out for me after awhile. Glad you are off it now. Did s/he start a new med for you??

Mine was mainly stomach issues. Diarrhea was the most commonm but nausea and no vomiting. I hate the stuff. I take the extended release so now it rarely happens but I also told my new doctor I was sick of medicine where I had to take anti-diarrhea pills after. I said I wouldn't take anything that would cause stomach problems. 10 years of it off and on were enough for me tyvm!

This has been an interesting week. I had my diabetes class tuesday and it was really good. I ended up asking about all of these symptoms I have been having for 3 years and the doctor said all these symptoms aren't from diabetes..He told me to stop Metformin for 2 weeks and see how I feel? The next day a lot of the symptoms went away! Wow! I have been going through this for 3 years. Since I have been eating good and have lost 7 lbs now, my A1C went from 7.5 to 7.

I went to the doctor today and that was an interesting experience, different doctor than the doctor at my diabetes class. It turns out I have asthma. My echocardiogram was good.

Here are some of the symptoms I was having

Side Effects of METFORMIN
muscle pain or weakness
numb or cold feeling in your arms and legs
trouble breathing
feeling dizzy, light-headed, tired, or very weak
stomach pain, nausea with vomiting
diarrhea, or a metallic taste in the mouth may occur.

Has anyone had an experience like mine?
