I had a little Tru meter last year that I really liked. This year they don't make strips for that anymore, so I had to get the new one. It is too big to take with you places. I just hate it. It is bigger than the Freestyle was. The little one everything packed together and it was only about 1/2 inch larger than the container the strips come in - to the side to hold the lancet and the meter just set on top of the strip container and that was less than 1/2 inch. It clipped on the lid to that container.

Thanks for your replies, everybody. I saw my doctor today and told him what I told you. He gave me a OneTouch Verio meter and said to try that and see how I liked it. So we'll see how that goes...

I use a Freestyle meter and have for a number of years. The one I use beeps when you have drawn up enough blood; so it doesn't matter that the area the blood goes into is black. I have never had a problem with mine. I have checked it against the test at the doctor's office, and it compares accurately. Someone else here suggested checking with whoever dispensed it to you. Could be something wrong with the strips in manufacturing or the meter. I suppose like everything else, it is possible to get a "lemon" meter.

I really hate it when insurance companies dictate which meter you use. It is not only unfair, they don't pay attention to the people using it and consider their needs.
I use the Ultra One Touch Mini... but I used and loved Relion (Walmart's store brand) with good results for a decade or so and they are comparatively inexpensive. My doctor checked its accuracy with his in-house equipment and it was comparable. I only switched when I was offered a free trial, and I like the size and ease of use of the mini and the large digital readout... and my insurance didn't object...

I used to use the Freestyle, but my insurance won't pay for the strips. I never had any problems with it except if I got too much blood on the strip. It doesn't need very much. Try calling them or maybe take the meter to the doctor's or pharmacy and see if they can help you. I had to get a different kind and the first one was great. The one they sent this time I just get everything all mixed up -- high numbers when I eat almost 0 carbs and exercise, lower numbers if I eat ice cream. I did try the control solution, but it still gave funny numbers after the control solution said it was working. I gave up on it. I also got a big difference in readings when they were right after each other. Like 25 points different.

Someone said that they had done something to mess up some of his strips so they didn't read right. How would someone do that? Does it happen when you have trouble taking them out of the container or they get too much air to them? I just wondered if I was having problems because of something like that.

I've been using an Accu-Chek meter for years, but I recently had to switch to a Freestyle Freedom Lite (change in coverage). I'm having trouble getting used to it.

In every other meter I've had, I can see the blood being drawn into the strip. With the Freestyle strip, the blood goes on little black half-circles. You can't see it being pulled in. I feel like I have to push the blood at them.

I'm getting weird readings, too. High readings that don't correspond with what I ate or the way I feel. Big variations in readings taken just a minute apart.

I see that the Freestyle gets high ratings, but I'm not liking it so far. Has anyone else had any trouble with it?
