Linda, I'm not doing nearly enough as far as exercise and diet goes. I, and my family, are planning to start the Paleo diet after my daughter's tests are completed (per a naturopath) and we have also joined a Wellness Center to get more exercise. I have found it difficult to work out using my lower body because of meniscus tears in my knees and problems with my left IT band, but I can use the strength training machines for my upper body.

Birgit, I read Chris Kresser's article and the comments, as well - thanks for the link. I can't say I agree with everything he says, but I do agree with some of it. Unless someone has personally suffered with Major Depression and OCD, they really cannot fathom the depth and scope of such devastating illnesses. My daughter has the same problems (depression & OCD - plus she has chronic fatigue syndrome) and is now seeing a naturopath for the first time. I'm hopeful alternative treatments will make a difference.

CRAZYDOG, I have contacted my doctor and am waiting to hear back from him. I will also contact the pharmacist - that's a great suggestion. I agree with you that they are often more knowledgeable than the doctors.

Thanks again for all your input - I really appreciate you taking the time to reach out to me with replies.

Can only echo the information you've been given and encourage you to talk with your health care practitioner about this. AND maybe have a chat w/the pharmacist. Sometimes they're more knowledgeable re: drugs then the Drs.

Abilify seems to have huge side effects. You may benefit from seeing a functional medicine practitioner who could help you find the cause of the dperession. It may very well respond better to a change in diet and to exercise, just like diabetes, but without the side effects.
Take a look at Chris Kresser's blog here:

pression-w
ithout-drugs-part-i/

Take a look at some of the the comments to this post as well.
I do know that Abilify needs to be withdrawn extremely slowly to be safe so don't try it without professional help.

Best wishes,
Birgit

Sorry, no I don't, but I am wondering what you are doing as far as diet, exercise and other pre diabetic measures. If not already on a diabetic meal plan, perhaps it might help in the interum to keep your blood sugar levels at a reasonable rate???? (until you can get back to this doctor to discuss the issue, that is)

Hi, my AlC was 6.1 in May. I suffer from Major Depression and OCD. My new psy doc put me on a very low dosage of Abilify. He did not tell me that Abilify can increase blood sugar levels and cause a person to become diabetic, but it can - it's right there in the medication literature and on the pharmaceutical company website.

I'm so close to the 6.5 A1C mark now and I'm scared Abilify is going to push the A1C even higher and I'll have to start on meds for diabetes as well as everything else.

I know it's a long-shot, since this isn't a depression or OCD team, but does anyone have any experience with Abilify?

Thank you,

Miller
