It will probably start getting easier to get the nutritional information since they are requiring it at chains and such now. When I was first diagnosed I checked the websites I could get information from most I wanted to, but I liked Applebees and they said they could not give me that information. I think now they do.

I like the idea of a book, too. I printed off the nutrition information from a few of the sites I liked, but I would keep losing it. Of course, I like the ones that aren't in chains, so they don't have the information. Just keep trying to choose the best choice I can.

The book is a fabulous idea! Seldom do I eat out, but when I do, I want to have good options!

I agree with you -- burgers usually mean added fat. BUT once in awhile, that's all right. It's the OTHER stuff I would be leery of. What is added to the ground meat to "stretch it" (and they ALWAYS do).

I love the idea of making a book and having it ahead of time. I probably can put something in my iPhone for quick and easy reference. I always thought I'd write a book someday (LOL).

Great idea,

I tend to stay away from anything called a burger - turkey, salmon, tofu - because they often add extra fat to make it taste like a "burger"

I like to look at menus from restaurants and fast food. Now I have my favorites and once DH and I are there. When the waitress comes over we say we want to order.

Some places put bread or popcorn on our table I ask them to take it back. Doing things that way and staying with your choice it feels good to know your nutrition numbers Pat in Maine.

I would wonder if it's something like bread crumbs or the like in the burger itself.

I have problems checking out nutrition just before I go out so I spent a day on line going through nutrition information from different chains. I made a little book that I could take with me with 3 choices for each restaurant. It has really helped. The only chain that seems unable to put anything on line is the Rainforest Café. They will not give you nutrition in the person. I ask for nutrition information whenever I can and add new information to my little book.

Thanks for all the feedback. Yes one would think I would learn to look at this before, but you know how that goes. I wasn't tempted by anything, and best of all my sugar was 102 afterward. Because I didnt eat the bread or fries, I'm not really sure how many carbs there were. Knowing I was going out for lunch, I did have a light breakfast, and yes the guess that I would not be hungry was right on the money. I will have a snack before bed, but other than that I'm good.
I guess all of the fat in the meal filled me. I guess it was sticker shock for sure.

I do concentrate more on the carbs than the calories, but I must say over all my calorie in take is between 1200-1400. It was just the sticker shock of it all.

Looking at their menu online I would have thought you would have been safe with your changes, too. What do they put on it that would raise the carbs so much?

Try to do your research, too, before eating out so you can make wise choices. perhaps a snack before eating out, too, will leave you less tempted.

I agree totally w/the concern being more about the blood sugar vs. the calories.

I'd be more concerned about what your blood glucose meter said about the meal than what the calorie count is reported to be. If you did not get much of a reaction (and your choices did sound good), then the big battle is won.

I'll bet you are not very hungry after that meal. And had you eaten the bread and fries, I'll bet you would be starving not very long after it. If I'm right and you are not hungry, you could go easy on the next meal and the calories will work themselves out.

On my weight loss journey, I only concentrated on blood glucose levels. I did not count calories, but rather made sure I ate a portion of the foods I chose (as opposed to my usual several portions). The result was that over time, my weight normalized and my sense of being full started working again.

At least for me, the battle was all about blood sugar levels. Keep up the good work.

When will I learn that I can not eat out. Especially at Ruby Tuesday's. I went out today for lunch to Ruby Tuesday's. We always go there, because it so close to my apartment. I ordered the Avocado Turkey Burger, minus the bread, and swapped out the fries for grilled zucchini. Below is the breakdown of what it says is the calories and carbs. Now I'm sure this includes the bread, I have no idea had to separate it out. At the end of the day I'm not even going to try. It was a nice afternoon, I enjoyed my meal. But I must say if I thought I was going to consume calories and carbs like that, I think I would have spent them on something else. I think first, I must be an idiot to keep eating there and then be shocked at what it turned out to be. So shame on me. But I also feel a little ripped off. Ripped off in my calorie budget. Thinking it sounded like such a good choice, and turns out it wasn't. I want to be healthy, I don't want to be become an obsessed person afraid to eat a meal out. But I can't imagine what's wrong with me to do this twice, eating there and then shocked at the nutrion. Silly.. I'm just silly.

Atleast I am walking at the Relay for Life event today, so a lot of walking will be happening. WOW.
