Getting a meter and checking often is the best thing I've done in a long time. That way I can avoid all the foods that increase my blood sugar more than I want.
I had a big cheeseburger minus the bun yesterday and my blood sugar stayed around 80-90 after that. emoticon

I am sorry you feel in necessary to pass on events because you can't find anything to eat. Work those events into your daily meals so they balance out. I still agree to get a meter to measure how you are doing.

Thanks for jumping in, Birgit!

I couldn't find where I'd seen it, but I had registered, so the link was on my list...

I agree, I don't always agree with what the experts say, but I'm open to new ideas, and I know some of the things offered don't work for me simply because I've had this beast in my life for too long. You can possibly reverse the diabetes, but I know to my regret that at a certain point there is damage that's harder to combat. Still not impossible, 'cause you never know what new research can show us!

...Newcomers to diabetes have a lot of advantages today, and this is just one of the opportunities out there, to learn and help each other.

Kathy,
since I'm the one who posted the diabetessummit link I will answer to that. Many of the presenters actually did get into research about diabetes after being dianosed themselves or because a family member was diagnosed. Many others are physicians who specialize in metabolic disorders, others are researchers who have studied diabetes and metabolism for many years, yet others are dieticians who have treated thousands of clients. I don't expect to agree with every one of the experts but think there will be lots of opportunities to learn to think outside the box of traditional diabetes care.
Even some of the presenters who do not have PH.D.'s in medicine or related fields may have a lot of information to offer that is not mainstream. One example is Jenny Ruhl, from
www.bloodsugar101.com/ and author of this book:
www.amazon.com/Blood-Sugar-101-about
-D
iabetes/dp/0964711613

The reason why I'm excited about it is that the diabetessummit will cover lots of cutting edge research that may still take years to trickle down to your average physician and patient, so I am hoping that through this many people will get information when they still have a chance to see big improvements in their blood sugar levels through implementing the best management possible.

I agree with HYEGEEK.

Everybody is different, but in general it is carbs that raise blood sugar (and lock up, or even add to body fat). Measuring your blood sugar about 45 minutes after eating is a pretty good indication of what impacts you. The first food that I found, many years ago, that impacted my blood sugar was bananas. Bananas are 20% carbs by weight, more than mashed potatoes, and those are also on my "never eat" list.

It should be interesting to see what these "experts" have to say... I always wonder how many of them LIVE with the disease...

I look at it as a healthy lifestyle change. I dine out a lot due to my job and always go for the healthy options. It is a shame that you feel that you can't socialize but it is doable. There are lots of tricks such as eating a meal before you go out or take a healthy snack with you. It has a lot to do about having a positive attitude that you can do it and are getting healthy and fit. Working hard at keeping BSs under control will keep those nasty complications at bay.

Good luck!!! emoticon

At the risk of annoying you, I will once again state that the best way to determine what you can eat is by using a blood glucose meter to see what each food you eat does to your blood sugars.

The answer already exists, and it's free, cut your carbs. On the low-carb team on spark there are lots of people like me who have cut their carb levels and prevented or reversed type 2 diabetes.

was told jan 6 2014 -- my aic was 6.7
having lost 11 lbs since then -- i am praying i brought my aic down some ...
was on meds for 10 days - got symptoms -dr said to stop taking meds --
and never said to go on any other type - so i started tracking calories - carbs etc. -
for 6 weeks - then since mid feb i have not tracked and i still managed to loose weight --
no bread ever -- no butter, no potatoes... no pasta -- i even dont go to my high tea meetups anymore cuz there is NOTHING i can eat --- no scones with whip cream no tiny sandwiches no sweets -- i dont even go out to eat at food court or coffee shop anymore -- i stay home and measure every dog gone thing i hate it so much - but if it is what i gotta do to NOt end up with all those horrible things that the big D brings - then so be it - -a hermit i will be --

i am always on the look out for new research - i dabbled with the thought of going vegan - i don't think i could be commmited enough to going full blown vegan --
but i do enjoy eggplant, tofu .. soy - almond milk - ... on occassino
i gave up eggs .. bread .. pasta -- dont want it - dont have it ... done

saw this on facebook .

he $264 billion dollar Diabetes Industry stands to lose a fortune if the world’s 300 million diabetics discovered the truth.

That's why drug companies spend $16 billion annually to directly influence doctors. Most often, these salespeople are the physician’s main source of new diabetes information.

And since our healthcare system isn’t set up to administer today’s best diabetes treatment (diet-and-lifestyle education), patients are forced to go for “second best” (drugs and medical procedures). But according to current statistics, “second best” is failing miserably…
More than two million new cases of Type 2 are diagnosed each year.
■ One person dies every 10 seconds from its nasty complications.
■ Right now, more than 60 million Americans are walking around with this silently destructive disease — and most are completely unaware!
■ One million diabetics are dying every year — unnecessarily!
