Wow! I can't believe I am just now seeing the September post from Holly. :-( I really don't like the way notifications do and don't work on this site. I guess I just need to be even more diligent about checking the boards. Sorry Holly for missing your post!!! How are you doing with the food intake?? Are you feeling more comfortable with the amount you are eating?? Any revelations or insights on your challenge??

Keep moving forward, friends!!

Hi everyone! All of your posts peaked my interest in the book so I went online to see if my library has the book and they do. Put a hold on it and can't wait to get started. Thanks for the recommendation.

Holly welcome. Glad you read the book!! The amount of freggies seems fine to me. It doesn't seem like a lot of calories. Are you staying within the calorie range for achieving/maintaining your goal weight?

I eat 10 c of freggies each day. The leafy greens especially are very low calorie. And I have 10 c water every day. Congratulations on eating healthy foods !!!

Read the book. Here is where I need help/advise/suggestions... I eat the right foods but the portions are crazy out of control. I cant figure out why I eat like I'm never going to be fed again, ever! Maybe I need to have something in between meals like a hard boiled egg to take the edge off my hunger. Argh! I cant just have one apple.....at least two at a time with some almond butter. Dinner is like a large grilled chicken breast(no marinade or sauce) , four cups of broccoli(no salt just a little butter), and my tomato-watermelon-strawberry salad. ALL good food. ALL Whole foods, no sugar added, no salt added. Maybe I need to up my water intake. I'm a "hungry girl" and as embarrassing as it is to admit how MUCH I eat, I DO log it on my Spark nutrition log faithfully every day (and have for years being brutally honest) I even add *Notes* at the end of the day have cuss myself out if I've lost all control. Which makes me laugh and determined to do better the next day. Thank you for the warm welcomes. Curious if anyone is like me or has any ideas of suggestions. H.

Leenie it really helped me understand what was happening with me and food. Then I could stop being so critical of myself and avoid the trap by planning my food choices in advance.

Sharonlee glad you got it. The surprise to me was to read how food can be a real physiological addiction. That explained why it was so tough to deal with cravings.

The how to section is my favorite part of the book. Hope you find it helpful. I did.

I ordered this book when I joined the team last week and have it already from Amazon. Just started looking at it - went directly to the back to see the "how to"...first word I read...Awareness. I look forward to studying it and applying the changes.

I had forgotten how often I referred to this book before moving. I just ordered a copy for my iPad because I packed it and put it in storage when we moved. Sugar, fat and salt are my downfall. I get a lot out of the book. Onward!!!

I like to underline and bookmark/dogear (psst don't tell the nuns) pages when I read this type of book and that's why I ordered the hard copy. This kindle edition will be prefect during my transition period.

I spent a few days in lala land between illness and a yukky attitude. I looked through the book again to get my bearings. The ideas to change hyper eating are common sense but things I ignore when I want to give in to the cues. I need to stay with the planned eating, recognizing the cues and paying attention to hungry and full feelings.

I want to implement one thing from the book at a time. This week I will concentrate on page 182 - Intervention. Refusing the cue's invitation to my brain! A moment to make a choice. That instant distraction will hopefully put the thought away for now.

Good book, thanks Mary. 😉

I mentioned that as I read the "HOW TO" pages I took short notes for myself. That has turned out to be a benefit. I started on page 182 through page 239. I keep the notes on my table and look through them to remind myself of all the ways to avoid the hyper eating behavior. I have battled overeating most of my life and this is a new way look at it. I have heard a lot of these ideas over the years but this seems to have clicked with my brain. I guess I was ready to hear the message. Poor health from results of chemo and radiation then heart issues had me in a real funk. I only saw things getting worse and ending with a stroke and worse. I have more hope that my health will improve and I will get some of the energy that left 4 years ago back.

HA HA!! Hi Fran! I'm glad you got to the parts about reversing the habits. The book definitely does get you thinking. I started re-reading it but I've slacked off on that for a few days.

You know you will always have our support!! You just keep re-reading that book as many times as you want and need and keep turning here for encouragement and support. We CAN do this......One Month At a Time!!!

Finally I have gotten to Chapter 37 that discusses Reversing the Habit. I decided to make a few notes to reinforce the 5 components of behavior changes. The 4th component is support. I tried to think of who are the people that I can enlist for support. Hubs is my partner in crime when it comes to overeating so that won't work in my early stages of change. When he sees that I am making changes for more than 24 hrs then he may be more help. One of the most helpful supporters I have is this group and Spark. This book makes these brain cells churn!

Janet like you I can see my eating behaviors in every chapter. Now I am reading the chapter about the food industry and that is eye opening too.

Thanks for the BD wishes.

Happy Belated Birthday Fran.

I have just started reading the book but I can definitely say I see myself. I have long said if I just wouldn't eat lunch, I wouldn't binge. There must be something going on there.

EXACTLY!!! I so totally agree with you Fran. I know that the "how to" part is important but I think it had so much more impact on me by reading all the foundation information first. In fact, the foundation information already led me to the "how to" long before I got to that chapter. It's obvious once you do the foundation reading. There's no magic trick. Really, I think the moral for me is "Knowledge is Power".

You GO girl!! Keep on reading, start to finish! I'm going to start RE-reading mine! :-)

Thanks for the birthday wishes.

I still want to get to the chapter about how to not walk on electric wires to get to the sweet stuff! Usually what I do with these type of books is turn to the HERE IT IS chapter. I have to understand why I do this not just how not to or it won't mean as much to me. JMHO

That is a fantastic post, Fran! I love that we are all having epiphanies with the book. The fact that eating foods high in fat, salt and sugar makes us want more more more is really an eye opener for me, too. I thought it was just "bad for me", I didn't really realize that it was really truly driving and reinforcing the barricades to me changing my ways and losing weight. It's really just messing up my brain and that is NO good. I think I didn't realize the power they have for those of us that are vulnerable.

Thanks for posting and sharing!!

And HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! :-)

I know what you mean about taking in all the information. It is a lot to digest.

Something did occur to me yesterday while reading. According to this book Science has shown the cues to be sugar, fat and salt so how do I see those three things in my daily diet? I am always aware of certain things like gluten because of celiacs and I always know when I am eating sugar because of this 50 lbs. I tote behind me. The cues I don't watch much at all, like knowing the actual amount of grams or mg I eat daily, are fat and salt. I have those items listed on my tracking but ignore them. I add salt to EVERYTHING even fruit. I always thought that was too hard to track since salt is an added ingredient in a lot of food before I hit the salt shaker. I give a brief glance to the fat content of some food but it usually doesn't influence my decision to eat it or not. I think of things like avoid desserts and don't overeat when I think of losing weight. This book points out how those 3 things, sugar, fat and salt tell my brain when to start and stop eating. I still haven't gotten to the chapter that tells me the remedy for these cues.

This is a long winded post but I am an old chick who will be 67 tomorrow and still learning about my body.

Just the first chapter hit home when it talked about how we under report our food intake. I burst out laughing as I "estimated" some foods I track on spark. Duhh.... Look at my butt and you can tell that it may not have been exactly 1 cup of whatever! emoticon

Mary I bought it used for 7 including shipping and in new condition. I order it through Amazon and received it in 2 days. I prefer a hard copy for books I want to highlight or go back and reread some sections. Just started reading it. Thanks for sharing the info.
Have a great day. emoticon

Okay folks, here it is........

"The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite" by David Kessler, MD (pediatrician and former FDA Commissioner)
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is extremely eye opening, logical, enlightening and incredibly empowering. It's available for free on Kindle (for subscribers). Used copies are 7 bucks on Amazon and you can even buy it on audio. If you have ever struggled with resisting certain foods or amounts of foods, this book will help you understand why that happens and how to overcome it. Really. Go get it. Read it. Do it. Change your life.
======================

That is what I posted on Facebook about this book and I really want to share it here too.

I know that MARBEALL has been reading the book so she can share some input, too. It's really eye opening and is already giving me the tools to change my behavior patterns. WOO HOOO!!!
