Overeating, tomato dishes, chocolate, peppermint, spicy food, juices all trigger my reflux, especially at night.

What triggers my acid reflux varies. Sometimes what I eat that gives me acid reflux one time might not give me acid reflux the next time I eat it! The last thing I ate that kept me up all night with pain was 3 little prunes. Go figure.... I do agree with some though, overeating and tight clothes are a given!

Peppers, onion, greasy foods, chocolate sometimes and some other stuff can bother me. Bending over can be a big issue a lot. Over eating can be a big issue.

I try not to have to take anything, as with a lot of medicines I then end up with side effects that can sometimes be worse than what I took the medicine for in the first place.

I have taken Tums, Generic Tagamet and some other medicines in the past. I have tried ACV, or ginger, but sometimes that back fires on me too. I found for me it is best just to try to avoid the triggers.

Lately, I find that overeating triggers my pain worst of all. Leaning over pushes my gut up int my stomach, thus pushing the acid up into my esophagus. On days I'm doing things I know I'm going to have to lean over for, like gardening or heavy house cleaning, I take a Zantac.

I feel like if I get rid of my gut, I'll be much better. When I was first diagnosed, the doctor said that my belly fat was causing my reflux. That makes sense to me, because I can't even tie my shoes without pain.

I find that some days almost anything can trigger my reflux, especially if it has been acting up for good reason. Sometimes, I think the area affected is just sensitive from the acid. If I stay away from triggers, this doesn't happen near as much.

I am so sorry I accidentally posted this wrong and am reposting it here -

My triggers are chocolate milk, caffeine products like coffee, sometimes water and laying down after I eat to soon. My goal is to not eat or drink anything after 8pm at night.

Whatever it is that stirs your soul, listen to that

I have acid reflux and was diagnosed with GERD ... probably 30!yrs ago. Several things can trigger / then times just reflux anyways/. Things to avoid fried foods/ tomatoes and tomatoes products/ chocolate/ mint/ alcohol / smoking/ spicy foods / large meals and do not eat 3hrs prior to bedtime .

Was on stomach meds for many years.. over a year ago a trainer mentioned taking a high quality enzyme prior to eating meals or snacks... the best suggestion ever ... taking these daily and off prescription meds. Another suggestion from doctors/ specialist ... elevate head of bed for sleeping ๐Ÿ’ค

I am not sure about your age, but as I get older my digestive system got worst and suffered acid reflux in bed esp. early morning. I have tried everything, probiotic, anti-acid, Nexium, ZANTAC, stress relief exercises, elevated bed , less meat ,more vegetables, beans etc but they only help to an extent.. Finally I found the answer, ENZYMES!! Enzymes for digestion may decrease naturally reduce as we age. The functions of pancreas and intestines are less efficient. So I have embarked on enzymes tablets, the logic is to ensure the tummy can digest and absorbed food , otherwise they sit in the tummy like a rock and the tummy secretes lots of acid to try dissolve them. So excess acid is only a reaction to undigested food, not a disease by itself. I began taking digestive enzymes tables which has following Lipase- to dissolve fats, Lactase for diary and milk, Amylase to turn starch, carbs to sugar, Protease – break down protein and Cellulose to break down fibres, peas and beans. I take them 30 mins before meals. Sometimes I abstain if my meals are light.
I make it a point to take one tablet before bedtime so I can sleep right through the morning. Try these out and be patient, stomach takes up to 1 – 6 months to heal, but you should feel better day after day. Note limit alcohol, cigarettes- there are no enzymes for these. Also curtail stuff that relaxes the oesophagus muscle i.e. oil, mint, coffee and inflammatory stuff like sugar, chocolates, rich oily fish, animal fat. You need not ban them, just watch how much you can handle. The enzymes will greatly assist. Let us know how you go after 2 weeks. Cheers

Hi Sherry,

I too get very bad heartburn when i get into sweets of ANY KIND. I cant have almost everything with sugar or grease. I used to take Nexium but I got off of it when I learned I had the H.PYLORI bacteria.

Did you stop the sweets again? and if you did did your heartburn get better again? :)

No matter how sloowww you go, you are still lapping people on the couch :) Everyday is a new beautiful day, all we can do is do our best! We all make mistakes, we need to pick ourselves back up, dust off and try to get it right the next time :) Enjoy the day, smile, laugh, and love like there's no tomorrow!

I'm so glad I found this. I have been having a lot of heartburn the past few days and I'm beginning to think it;s sweets that are making it worse. I'm addicted to sweet/sugar, I stop eating sweets for about 3 weeks and didn't have any heartburn, then the other day I started eating them again for the 9ast couple of days I have had it bad, to the point of almost making me sick. I will test this by starting tomorrow stopping eating sweets like cookies, candy bars, cakes, pies and Little Debbies snack cakes of any kind and donuts to see if it stops. Could eating to many sweets cause heartburn-acid reflux?

MEDCLINE obviously has a fake account. But I did buy a low-cost wedge pillow at Walmart a couple weeks ago, and it has helped tremendously. My only issue is that I'm normally a side sleeper and that gets a little tricky on a wedge for me. My hubby had some rare reflux last week and I had him try the wedge. He was surprised he actually slept well on it, and I think his snoring came down. Now if I could just find actual pillow cases for that size...

Subway uses light tuna in water versus oil. They use a small amount of lemon when they make it not enough to notice. Probaly why you don’t get reflux.

You might try an herbal tea such as ginger with honey. They are anti oxidants and anti inflammatory. Can be either hot or chiled sooths the stomach and esophagus.

Seems like just about everything right now. Biggest problem seems to be allergy meds, especially the inhalers. Quite the dilemma! Not really sure but I also think the AcipHex I am taking isn't working really well, Was on Pronotnix, but an ENT seemed to think that wasn't working. I know I have vagus nerve damage from the videoscope the ENT did. Now I just need to get my GI to do an endoscopy.
Used to be ( only a few months ago) all I had to stay away from was high fat foods, anything spicy and vinegar.

Almost anything! Citrus, fats, tomatoes in any form, even a glass of water! I feel that stress is a huge part of it, too, because when I am relaxed, I can eat almost anything without consequence, but if I am stressed, even a small sip of tepid water can trigger a "something is stuck in my throat" panic event.

I have achalasia and many things cause distress. I am careful to not eat the things I know cause issues but sometimes it's a surprise. The things I know I can't eat are any type of lettuce, spinach, cucumbers, broccoli, spicy anything, greasy anything, fried anything.... and the list goes on. Unfortunately the things that make my heartburn better are ice cream, peppermint and chocolate which doesn't help the weight situation.

Fruit juices, greasy foods, processed meats or dairy cheese, and white sugar added to anything. I've been prescribed Effexor recently and it has caused a lot of reflux, but I'm dousing the esophageal flames with a daily regular bath of baking soda laced water, which instantly kills the burning sensation in my chest. Please try 1/2 tsp per 8oz water.
I've also switched to Stevia in the Raw packets to sweeten my tea with and it taste just like sugar without the calories or stomach upset!

Chocolate, sweet, red wine, tomato sauce, honey, and coffee causes pain but not usually reflux. Drinking water before a meal helps. Eating a high fat meal for dinner triggers reflux at night. I was taking Lozec but now taking zantax 2-3 times a day. My bone density was lowered but has improved. I have an hiatus hernia caused by pregnancy.

Definitely coffee, tuna, mustard, too much to eat. I know when I lose weight it will bother me less. Am taking 15 mg of Prevacid once a day and that usually does it for me. When I don't take it, I am always in for trouble. Sorry for all the pain everyone is going through, but each of us need to learn and respect our own bodies. Trying to cut out coffee completely, tho I love it!😳

I get acid reflux mostly at night. One thing that helps me is sleeping with my head elevated. I have a wedge pillow. As far as eating is concerned, anything with lard, like Mexican food can make me feel uncomfortable. Spicy food, strangely enough, doesn't aggravate my reflux. As far as medication is concerned, the only thing I use is Pepcid Complete, occasionally as needed. I drink a glass of water with two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar twice a day. It helps to drink it before I eat and makes eating more comfortable. After eating, I take papaya enzyme, which I discovered by accident. Exercise also helps, but long term.

Almost everything I eat lately seems to be causing me worse symptoms. This gets increasingly worse when I eat late in the evening. It is also triggered by greasy foods (donuts which are a no no anyways lol), and my wonderful morning coffee. My symptoms also increase with my monthly menstrual cycle, which seems to be especially worse the older I'm getting.

Most anything acidic. Brewed coffee will trigger me, but instant coffee doesn't. Oddly, the coffee from my favorite local coffee shop doesn't trigger me either (yay!).

I recently discovered a trigger that has been suggested as a home remedy: honey. I'd been using it to prevent seasonal allergies before I was diagnosed, but I stopped when I went on Atkins. When I decided to stop Atkins and just use portion control (I use my tracker religiously), I started back on the honey last week. I felt like I was going to die. I knew it had to be something I was eating, so I thought back, and reintroducing honey was the only significant change I'd made. So I stopped it a couple of days ago, and I'm feeling much better.

It would have been nice if I could have made that discovery BEFORE I bought that 4-lb jar...

HOLLI64, I am so sorry you are in such pain. I KNOW what it feels like as we all do on this team to have that bad pain in the throat or the "I can't swallow" feeling.I used to have "TUMS" like they were going out of style! I had to get an endoscopy performed to help with my hiatal hernia{ and swallowing in general}. I actually got to the point where I could NOT swallow food one day and had to expiate it. THAT is when I went to the dr. for the needed help. The procedure has helped me IMMENSELY.
I have CHANGED the way I approach food, {I do not eat spicy food on a regular basis nor drink coffee, except occasionally },but more importantly, I DRINK TWO GLASSES OF WATER with each meal,ESPECIALLY @ RESTAURANTS where the servers are often very busy and you NEED that water to drink so you can eat your meal. [ I try to eat a little ,then drink some water ,then eat some more ,drink some more at intervals.] . And I tell the server HOW to PREPARE the MEAT~ no spices, plain~ also VERY IMPORTANT!!!
The GERD trigger foods for me are coffee, pizza, spicy foods, tomato sauce, sausage, shepherd's pie, Polska Kielbasa, and sometimes, chocolate.

I'm having a really hard time right now, because the GERD has been bad the past two weeks, and my entire throat and esophagus is sore. I can't drink or eat much without coughing. I just tried to eat a smoothie, and thought I would cough up a lung! That horrible tearing pain that goes through your chest when you cough too long and too hard is almost unbearable sometimes.

I'm at the end of my rope. This all started after I took antibiotics, amoxicillin to be exact. I've taken so may probiotics and eaten so many probiotic foods it isn't funny, but it just won't stop. I can't even lean over to pick up anything off the floor without the acid rushing up my throat.

I don't have insurance and I don't get onto Medicare until May. I'm praying that I can hold out until then, because I sure can't afford a big doctor bill or surgery.

Lately, I have no idea. It gets better, then it gets worse, and right now, it's worse. My doctor says it's caused by the fat in my belly pushing up on my stomach, and that I have to lose weight quickly.

Try the same products that don't have the gluten. That would be ones that have no wheat flour. That is a common allergen. Oats, brown rice, etc.

For me, it seems like it is foods like crackers, pretzels, some - but not all - breads. last night I had cornbread, and that was thwe worst ever for the reflux. So what do you think - salt? gluten? A lot of the foods that I see you all are listing are not triggers for me.

But vinegar is acidic. I just ordered Manuka Honey from New Zealand. I can take it twice a day. It is unfiltered and has good bacteria in it.

I have been drinking alkaline water. I like the kind at Whole Foods called Essentia. It is suppose to be good and it kills the bad pepsin that have escaped the stomach.

Chamomile tea is the best beverage besides water.

Passion tea from Starbucks-I get it iced with no extra sugar and no lemonade

Naturally decaf Chai tea-you can even make a chai latte. I use almond milk. You can also blend it into a smoothie.

Teecinio is also good-It has no acid and is a coffee substiute

A few recent days I ate more like I used to. Instead of meat once every couple of weeks, I had it a few days in a row. Fewer veggies too. Wouldn't you know I began experiencing a lot of acid again.

Back to my new style eating yesterday and already I'm doing better!again!

Hi.. New to forum, but not to acid reflux. I've been on Nexium 20mg for several years now. Mid-June, I decided it was time for me to do something about my weight (besides the fact that we booked a Cruise for September next year). Since I cut out dairy (mostly), cut out fatty foods, and cut out white breads, pasta, etc., I haven't had any problems with my acid reflux. It's been great. Before though, pretty much everything I had gave me heartburn and spicy foods would have me up most of the night with an acid backup. I'm hoping to be able to stop taking the Nexium soon.

About a month ago I began experiencing some of the worst acid problems I've ever had. Just by coincidence, we began eating differently. All but eliminated meat and I've noticed that my symptoms have drastically diminished most of the time.

I eat salads with a little olive oil, no vinegar. I don't eat after dinner. I seldom have decaf coffee. (I never drink regular.). It's all worth it for how much better I'm doing.

I like water which works out. Earlier in the day I can add a splash of fruit juice which gives it a different flavor which is nice for something different.

What triggers my Acid Reflux? Almost everything. I have found out, that if I eat low acid foods, that helps. I know that, if you eat high protein and a lot of dairy, your going to have acid problems. I needed, to reduce my protein and dairy products, staying away from citrus and spicy foods.and Chocolate(I really try to) I have found out that eating (2) alkaline foods to every acid food, it helps.
I have also have found, that Watermelon, cucumber, asperagus, celery, Melons in general, arugala lettuce are great foods to eat to control acid reflux., But the best that I have found is drinking real Spring Water(Ice Mountain is mine) I drink it all the time when the volcano starts to erupting. I don't know what's in Spring water, but for me it really works. (note Purified water does'nt work at all, you need Real Spring Water.
One more thing I learned on Dr OZ that the body takes grapefruit, which is acid and turns it into alkaline (don't understand), I do not do this very often, but I eat Pink grapefruit and it does not brother me,, Go on Google and get a list of alkaline and acid foods, Google has webb sites that can give you more foods then I did above

Hi. I am new here and also new with a GERD diagnosis. I have no pain but apparently have some damage to my esophagus and had an laryngospasm under anesthesia last Fall which locked my larynx for 5 min and caused my Oxygen to drop dangerously low before they "broke" the spasm. I am seeing an ENT for that issue and he and his speech and language specialist are working with me to figure out how to control my GERD.

Now for my question. It has been suggested that I eliminate the usual suspects - citrus, tomatoes, spicy foods, etc. But the suggestions also included all juices, sodas (that's ok, I don't drink them much anyway), coffee, tea, wine and alcohol. OK. That seems to be EVERTHING that is not water. I can't imagine drinking nothing but water for the rest of my life. Has anyone come up with any ideas on beverages with some flavor? (PS I personally gave up artificial sweeteners last year so that knocks out the flavor drops for water too.) I am stuck here.

Hello everyone

I don't know where to go and ask this. But for the last week I have seriously started to reduce the reflux triggers (tomatoes citrus fruits fried foods etc) and am having 8-10 glasses of water daily. The problem is my sore throat gets better but I have it again today, throat is swollen (well I did have a fried chicken piece) and also I seem to be losing weight quickly. Why is this happening? I am worried about things like cancer ( I know I do sound silly but I am worried). My doctor says its reflux and it is pretty bad and yes it is possible to lose 2 kgs in a week with the adjustments i made, like no oily foods or full fats dairy.
I just want to know is it normal to lose weight like this, as its not the starting weeks i am in my 4th month of seriously weight loss and healthy adjustments.

Please help and put me at ease.

Thank you
Mummy2bubba

Eggs - when I had acupuncture on Wednesday, was told that if I stop taking
the Nexium, when I get the burning, take 30 mls of white vinegar when I get
the burning or discomfort and guess what, it worked tonight.

I have many of the standard triggers like tomatoes, wine, chocolate and spicy foods. The big one for me though - it still seems crazy is gluten. I was getting heartburn from everything - even, plain white rice, saltines and graham crackers (these were the worst). It was awful. After a endoscopy the GI doctor told me to give up milk and gluten for awhile (as well as my tomatoes, wine and chocolate). I was surprised at the results. I try to limit my dairy as much as possible but I do eat cheese and have the occasional yogurt/ice cream. I aim to be gluten free everyday but still slip once in awhile. Depending on how much I indulge will depend on the consequences but I am glad that I found the main cause since giving up the usual triggers didn't work for me at all.

I just got a kit in the mail from the government. they do free bowel cancer screenings
every 5 years, so I will do that as well. As for GERD, I feel good right now, so am doing
something right with my food choices and less stress.

Great news on your test results.....unfortunately, that puts GERD in your hands...I've been at this for over 20 years and eventually, after all the trial and error, there can be more good days than bad....

I have a shortened esophagus that prevents the stomach valve from closing, so everything triggers reflux. It is possible to control by never having an empty or too full stomach...not lying completely flat....standing or walking after eating...only turning to the left side (dr says it has to do with stomach position)....eliminate greasy foods....take the meds....

Always try...you either win or learn

Taking big bites, especially of a starchy food like potatoes. It gets stuck in my esoophagus, hurts all the way down, and then major pain that leaves me doubled over. And for extra added fun, hiccups.

I tried some German cookies and started coughing. Will check the ingredients as
I didn't know if something in them caused the cough and the reflux.
Started using my ventolin puffer and then went to see my GP and he said I have,
