As I looked at the scale this morning I was not pleased to see the red numbers! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
I've been fasting twice per week but am not very mindful of what I'm putting in my stomach on eating days. Time to step it up. So.... I am back to tracking for a short period to help remind me of the calories I consume. (My Fitness Pal)

No excuses here...
It is all about eating when I am NOT hungry. I have a habit of snacking when tired or stressed. I have to learn to deal with these emotions differently and stop reaching for sweets.
I've learned a lot... and stress eat much less now... but promised myself if the weight went up like this I'd start tracking better. Time to shred the winter extras!!!

So... today is day ONE of tracking. Anyone else track calories on non-fasting days?

I'm sorry I haven't been on here in a while. I miss reading the posts!
Lately, I've spent some time with my mother and we do not have internet there.
The evening of Feb. 28 and early morning March 1 we had a tornado rip through our community. My house was virtually untouched but over 60 homes were destroyed. This neighborhood is where our Propane Company tank is (bottom of the picture). Our damage is just a matter of clean up but some people were trapped in their basements! We sadly had one death on the interstate as cars were tossed around by the tornado. Life can change in an instant.

We have a wonderful close community of people living here that are helping in more ways than I have space to mention. Ken and I are back at our jobs today as our clean up for the company is now being completed with large equipment. We are sticking to our fasting schedule too! Today is a fast day.
One thing I did notice... when we didn't get much sleep (tornado night) the next day (yesterday) I felt like eating all day! I believe it was the stress of lacking sleep more than the situation at hand. This morning after sleeping better I do not feel as hungry. So.... get your sleep, friends!

I did fine today until I came home tonight. My husband's birthday is tomorrow and he wanted to have a sliver of his birthday cake and I had a sliver too. Still below 1000 calories today though.

I had a good fasting day--ended with a calorie total of 622 calories, so getting better. I skipped breakfast, went to work and still had good energy.

May I share my menu today? Feedback welcome!

coffee w/ soy creamer

3 clementines [snacked on these throughout the work day]

brown rice
lentils
roasted tomatoes, mushrooms, onions

spring mix
fresh strawberries and blueberries
chopped red and yellow peppers
balsamic vinegar

Hello Trina - good to see you here again - well done on keeping up with regular fasting. I totally understand about being too overwhelmed by all the other stuff we have to do resulting in us not joining in with Team forum posts very often - that's fine! It's just it will be great to 'see' you whenever you DO drop by. emoticon

And of course if you ever need support or have any 5:2-type queries, you know where 'we' are!

Tammae - thank you for your kind words and all the emoticons! It was a superb trip. I'm busy preparing my sermon for Sunday morning at the moment, but once that's done I hope to post a photo or two of my Kilimanjaro climb on my Spark Page.

It's been SO LONG since stopped in here!! I'm changing focus in my life and got carried away and overwhelmed with all I have to do. I'm spending lots of time practicing music and adhere to my reading schedule. This is a great team however, and I'll try to stop in here more often.

My fasting days are Sunday and Tuesdays for sure. I may add in another day, but those 2 days for sure.

Seriously, I hope it all went well. I would never have stood the stress of the altitude let alone climbing! I applaud you, my friend!

Well, about the subject of calories on fasting day... I guesstimate. Yep. I make salads but depending on the dressing/meats/nuts/eggs it could be anywhere from 500-700 every time. I am SURE that is part of my lack of weight loss too.

I'm so excited my hubby is coming with me to the farm this weekend! He works so much and going to the farm is work but a lot of fun too! I will take my mother to a baby shower on Sunday and that will be nice. This baby will be Mom's 5th Great grandchild!

Hello Queen-Eydie

Well done for fasting on Tuesday - glad it wasn't difficult.

I fasted today.

I usually manage to keep my calories down to about 500 on a fasting day by always eating pretty much the same things on fasting days and I weigh everything. I think it helps that I don't eat until mid evening, so there isn't that much time to eat before bedtime. I do have to be very careful though.

Now, if only I could exercise restraint on the other five days of the week then I might lose a few pounds!

Hi! I had my first "fasting" day in a very long time on Tuesday and I really enjoyed it! The next morning I expected a big drop in weight but it only went down a couple of decimal points. Oh well. I'm doing it again tomorrow!

Even when I was regularly fasting I could never keep it at 500 calories. On Tuesday I ended the day at 725 calories. I don't intend to do that, but I always go over. Does anyone else struggle with that?

Just checking in. Still trying to learn to adjust to some version of weekly fasting. I'm not trying to lose weight. I should probably keep track of successful days or cycles. . I haven't tracked calories in years and don't intend to. I consider a cycle 48 hours that includes one MF day. I'm thinking I should include both the day before and after an MF day. It's important to me to keep to the reasonable routines I had before I tried this and I found they were getting screwed up with me feeling I could eat a lot more, or poorer quality food, because eating so much less certain days.

I also don't necessarily plan which day to MF. It has been working out that I"ll be inclined to eat a lot less at least two days out of ten, and sometimes they fall in seven days. I'm getting used to the feeling that I'm simply cooperating with hunger and satiety rather than "dieting," which I disilke the concept of, unless it's used to treat disease. No disease here yet!

I'm probably repeating myself.

Thanks for being here!

Absolutely I remember YOU, Eydie! Welcome back to 5:2 and I hope your fast today is good!

Eydie... You are a great cook... so please share some fasting day recipes with us. We are always looking for new ways to eat light on that healthy day.

I didn't fast last week while at my mother's house on the farm. I was over my head in stress and tend to eat when that happens. That is ok... fasting is a great way to get back into a healthy state.
Monday I fasted as I traveled home. Had a great salad with grilled smoked chicken and a raspberry vinaigrette dressing. This morning I broke my fast with a couple of eggs and a strawberry. Wow! That strawberry was sweet and tasty. Doesn't everything taste better after a fast?

Today was a fasting day for me.
Tomorrow we are visiting our son and taking him out for lunch. That will be nice and fasting the day before is always great. Gives us calories to spare for the "Slice of Pie" shop. One of my hubby's favorite places.

I feel so much better today... not like a balloon. emoticon emoticon
Yesterday Ken and I had a salad with lots of goodies in it and NO DESSERT! Today is a fasting day so both days together make us feel so much better. Drinking plenty of fluids and washing out all the blah...

I like to eat wraps and found some in the store yesterday that were a bit smaller, lower carbs, and lower calories. I am looking forward to trying one tomorrow.

Made an appointment with the chiropractor for an adjustment. Last week my neck and shoulder really hurt a lot but it is better now... of course, a day BEFORE I go to that doctor. Going anyway because I know my back could use the adjustment. I used to need him twice per month for maintaining my back... now that I've lost weight it is only when I feel necessary (I think that was over 4 months ago!). emoticon

Don't know where you are exactly, Lindsay, but I am thinking about your big climb up Mount Kilimanjaro! Praying you are safe!!!

HAPPY FEBRUARY, TEAM!!!

Fasted well on Monday and our next one is Friday. Our usual Thursday fast is one day later because I have a social engagement on Thursday. That is what I love about 5:2... switching and/or adding fasts is an easy task with planning.

Hi, Lindsay!
Isn't it interesting that we have a friendship and will never be neighbors?
There are good things like this that make me happy God placed me in this time and place.

Back from Mom's house and she cooked for me... I ate poorly... but she was loving it...
Is it worth gaining weight to make her happy? Ugh... I do love her.
Anyway... back to fasting!

My fasting last week was not the best and mostly non-existent. This will be a better week.
Have a happy day, everyone! emoticon

I've just looked up Perryville, Rolla and Norborne on Google maps and realise how tiny my geographical knowledge is! I think I need to spend lots more time studying maps of the US - so many familiar names but I've no idea where they are!

My son asked if "Mom" would have lunch with him... so the route has changed... who can say "no" to that sweet boy?
Perryville to Rolla to Norborne... all in the state of Missouri. Check out that route, Lindsay... might want to run it someday! emoticon emoticon emoticon
I'm sure you could do it! emoticon

Yesterday was probably the WORST fast I've had in months... I was hungry from minute one of waking and KNOW I over did the calories as I nibbled on the chicken and salad as I prepared the food! Then I ate some peanuts... good grief.
Sometimes that happens... I am planning on a fast Wednesday knowing it will work better at my mother's house as she will be gone and I get the day to work on the farm... hard work but a great joy for me.

Have a great week, ya'll. emoticon

Safe travels, Tammae. I wanted to look on a map to see where you're driving to / from, but I can't remember even which state you live in, let alone which part of the state! Would you tell us again, please?

I am excited to see what God has in store for you, Lindsay, so high up into the heavens! emoticon
My study this morning... fits with us both in my opinion (your worries about the mountain and my daughter's situation).

Luke 10:41-42
But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her."
Yep... Now, I know the best thing I can do for Lydia is to pray for her and soak up His word. He is my portion and yours too. There will be struggles...and for you, painful muscles!
God is always there... we just have to stop sometimes and sit at the feet of Jesus!!!!

No.

Aaargh! Panic!!

Hang on a minute - I'm a Christian. I'm not allowed to panic or worry - not about ANYTHING!

So it'll be all right. I expect Jesus has been up Kili loads of times already, but either way, He's coming up it with me and I bet He's got lots of wonderful and beautiful things to show me! emoticon

I'm glad you are safe, Lindsay. Happy to say this morning the ice is beginning to melt and chunks are falling off the trees. They predicted more ice accumulations last night BUT thankfully they were wrong! I am sure we will be out and about today for work.

Take care in the icy weather, Tammae.

We've had some snow and ice here, too, but not enough to cause me any trouble. Some parts of Eastern England have been suffering with more snow, storms and have had to be evacuated from their homes due to the threat of flooding by high tides today. So I'll keep counting my blessings.

I agree, Lindsay. I really do not want to do the alternate day fasting because I don't want to get "tired" of fasting. That just sets me up for overeating more. One thing that is great You have going is your love for exercise. That has to help burn some of those calories.

Getting a little spark in before the electric goes out... it is going to happen. Trees are icing and drooping as I type. This is predicted to continue throughout the weekend.

Today isn't a fast day... so I am thankful to have a stove/oven that runs on propane fuel (the fuel we sale). At least I can cook on the stove top and have some heat.

I fasted today. It's the non-fasting days that I find such a challenge as I find myself subconsciously thinking I can eat anything in almost any quantity that I like. One day I'll get the balance right!

We had a busy day today and I am tired... but it is a good tired. Lots of exercise climbing up and down the truck ladder & pulling on the heavy hose.
Supper was late tonight as we are working so late. People are anxious about the upcoming ice storm predicted for the weekend. For us who deliver heating fuel it is a busy time and everyone calls wanting their fuel yesterday! Lol!!

Tomorrow we have another fast. This busy week is flying by. I'm glad I can rely on 5:2 to keep me on track with health. When I do not properly fast I become miserable. I think after 2 1/2 years with fasting I think my body needs this "rest" taking a break from food. I grew up in a family of big eaters. The fasting is helping me not only lose weight (slowly) but feel so much better.

Not modified fasting yet (meaning not limiting to 500 calories or longer periods without food) but am sticking to three meals and fasting between them! I have a 3-week streak of that under my belt, but it still feels vulnerable. I cannot chance eating much less without feeling very confident that I will go smoothly back to that afterwards. It helps me that you're sticking with your plan. I'd much rather be around people doing this than calorie counting and and feeling they are struggling with the limitations and eating lots of snacks, etc.

Our Monday fast went well. Today Ken had breakfast but I decided to do a 16:8 as I spend my time doing book work this morning. I still feel bloated and miserable from the many foods eaten this weekend at the Christmas party. We left our candy plate we brought... on purpose! Most of the candy was eaten and I didn't want to bring any temptations home with us.

This week we are fasting Thursday again.
The rest of the week is LCHF and by the weekend we should both be back into Ketosis. That is when the body uses up the glucose energy and burns fat... I have plenty of fat to burn!

I also grabbed some greek yogurt with all the good stuff in it... they are small portion sizes and I plan to eat 1/2 serving every day for the probiotics. I also picked up some more cold meds as my sinus pressure has decided to return. I was only off the medicine for two days. Ugh... must give it more time.

Who is fasting this week?
Do you have a special meal you always eat on fasting days?

I know, right Lindsay? I think focusing on portion control might be the better solution! emoticon
I sometimes use a little stevia/splenda mix but try to stay away from most sugar alcohols. The sugar alcohols are not nice to me afterwards!

emoticon emoticon Family Christmas party today. I only see some of these people during this one time per year. It is always nice to visit. We all bring desserts. I'm bringing the last of the home made candy.
emoticon AFTER today... Ken and I are going to focus very hard on our diet/fasting properly as he has his yearly doctor appointment at the end of the month. I know for the rest of the month we can avoid the sugar and cut back. I want his blood work to be perfect!

Have a blessed Sunday, everyone!

I can't even really imagine what it would be like to eat a sugar-free diet - how is that even possible?!

I cannot convince myself that I need to be abstinent from sugar even though I actually do believe that no human body needs refined sugar. But I don't have it nearly as often as I used to. This past year, I switched almost completely to stevia and a little of sugar alcohols. I'm not saying they don't have their problems, but I feel safer using them than other sugar substitutes, and I use them mostly for coffee and dustings on a few items, not trying to find replacements for baked items or candy . I still feel some addictive symptoms for sugar, but it doesn't feel terrible enough when I do eat it to stop me. I may be in denial and doing damage I don't know, but so far, I'm still willing to play the odds, but that could change. It might be too late, but I won't know until later! If I were really worried, I would just swear off. I told myself years ago that it is a waste of my energy and damaging to my self-trust to vilify a food and then still eat it.

I'm on a maintenance team on Spark. People there have used all kinds of programs, but still only a few of them NEVER eat sugar. (I always look for people who've had a few years of a practice, not ones who are still in the beginning stages of a change. I can't know if they are just on the honeymoon!)

Without using the information to beat yourself up, you might look at what is still attractive to you about it. It may turn out that eating it and being concerned about it is bothersome enough that it actually does merit just jettisoning it from your life. How much would it really affect things? Would you pay a social price? Would you feel you are really missing out on one of life's pleasures? I still like it enough in the social situations I eat it in, and I have enough of a dearth of those pleasures in the rest of my life, sadly despite my efforts, that it's worth it to me, even if I temporarily put on a few pounds. I don't mind that fluctuation and since I've basically stuck to my overall program for seven years, I don't feel threatened. But it may be the last piece in the puzzle for you.

Hello, team emoticon
I'm up early on a Saturday morning drinking some coffee and planning my day. Work has been exhausting and at times frustrating. I've been trying to stay away from sugar... but that didn't happen! Last evening I ate sweets and today I am going to counteract that indulgence with a 20:4 fast day. Basically... that is just eating my evening meal. No calorie counting. Just letting my body detox the sugar our of my system.

I read an article this morning about how sugar is comparable to a drug... except the symptoms, unlike alcohol and other drugs, are mostly seen in years after constant consumption. I know that addictive feeling when eating sugar. I always want more. A half hour later I feel the "rush" in my veins... actually like too much caffeine will do to me. Not good. The only way to stay away from that sweet white stuff is to avoid it altogether.

Anyone successful in that area? Ya know... being able to avoid sugar altogether?

Thank You, Jesus, for fasting! Not only can I focus on prayer but I can KNOW my body is burning up that sugar carb and I will feel better physically. Fasting isn't easy after having sugar but it is necessary and works for me.
Another good note... I'm still down 5 pounds this week (since Monday). emoticon

Overate some on my day trip. It sure helps to be with people who want to be moderate. My friend is a little torn. He knows he's very vulnerable to food but he seems to balk at reigning in any of his impulses. I always suggest splitting entrees, and he always says afterwards that he's glad he didn't eat more, but I think he may associate me with undue rigor. If we were in our own city, we could take doggie bags. I'll ask, well, since you can't take the extras, would you rather leave uneaten food? He has an even harder time with that than I do. He'll eat any food left toward the end of the meal really fast, and then talk about being too full. He likes to make it sound as if there is no choice at all. I can basically hold my own in that situation, but, unlike for a naturally thin person, it does take effort. I wish I could say I could be completely peaceful around others' vulnerabilities, but I'd be lying. I do try to keep it to myself, unless the other person has opened up the discussion at another time.

I know this sounds like any of us, but I think there's a difference when you commit to thwarting that with whatever tactic you can.

Non 5:2 rant alert! I got in "trouble" once for mentioning (without naming) a sentiment expressed by a member of another team, someone who had never shown that she paid attention to me, on my personal blog, so I'm being careful. But I feel I have to say something! (This comes from outside of Spark.) A woman shared how she was proud of having resisted a McFlurry THAT SHE BOUGHT FOR HER PRESCHOOLER when she picked him up from school, I"m assuming at lunch time. She said she "of course" bought him the shake. I was shocked. McFlurries are 800 calories and nearly half a cup of sugar! What preschooler on just any day of the week needs that habit! Gosh, I would have a TERRIBLE time being a parent these days. But I know French parents take guiding their children in moderate eating very seriously, and it's only since France recently started adopting the American habit of snacking that their overweight and obesity rates have been climbing. (They do allow children a snack-NOTHING like a McFlurry) at 4 p,m. because their dinners are around 7 or even 8 at night And kids eat what parents eat.)

Rant over.

Have a moderate day no matter which day you're on!

OK. pretty far from 5:2.

We DID get some snow! Actually it is still snowing this morning. It looks so pretty. emoticon We had a busy day at work and didn't get supper until 9 p.m. I usually try to get to bed by then but last evening it was 11 p.m. This is such a busy work time of year for those of us who sell propane.

Today is a fast day. Salad prep is already finished so that keeps me out of the kitchen.

I'm recording my morning weight on the ticker each day.
Monday was my first fast since the holidays and my weight was at a high of 178 pounds that morning! With one fast and two days of eating lower carb foods the water weight has already dropped 5 pounds! I do feel better but am still needing to lose 5 more to feel better. At least I am on the right track.

So, basically, my biggest problem is not fasting. I do that quite well. It is the in-between days where I tend to eat when I'm not at all hungry. One peanut M&M only leads to another one until the whole bag is gone! Bad sugar habits are hard to break.

I will fast by the time you go to bed, Lindsay! My fasting is Thursday.
It is funny that I've "known" you so long on Spark I feel like you are my neighbor. Stop by anytime! emoticon emoticon Hope you get your voice back, too!

My cold is much better today. Finally figured out yesterday afternoon I had a migraine along with the sinus issues SO when I took the right meds (migraine script) it went away in a couple of hours. I felt MUCH better.

Back to work today... dressing in layers as it is really cold now. May get some snow tonight!

I've lost my voice today and am still coughing frequently, but otherwise I'm feeling quite well in myself, so that's good.

Don't fret, ladies. This team will stay and although I can be a goof ball with my diet at times I always try to get back on track.
Yesterday's fast went well and this morning I broke fast with eggs for breakfast. I think some chicken broth is due for lunch to help me feel better. This sickness is really getting me down.

Everyone wants me to go to the doctor but I can't unless I absolutely have to... I am not supposed to take antibiotics and when I do it is possible for me to get even sicker. So... I fight the sick battle the best I can. Today's battle plan is to take a nap!

I can understand your feeling you shouldn't lead, and glad you put it in perspective. The body is easily able to retain ten pounds of extra water from carbs and probably salt. Calling your eating mindless smacks a little of shaming yourself, no? Personally, I don't see much wrong with a person who has been able to keep of 70 lbs. for as long as you have gaining some weight over the most celebratory time of our culture's year. I feel our culture's problem isn't what we do at the holidays but that we defend eating for treat or celebration all year long!

The first team I really stayed with was one where a member, not even the leader, posted every day that her plan was in place, and she also reported briefly what else she was doing that day in life. She was actually I think in the low obese range but had been morbidly obese and was basically holding down quite a loss. I know the odds on this and that was inspiring to me. (I actually find some people who get down to low BMI's to be too hard to follow because I don't want to live the life that would get me there and I find their vigilance discouraging! )

Going with a friend to L. A. today. Might pack a salad just to have to supplement. The other offerings when out are often so much more interesting than the salads that I'd just as soon eat half of one of those and get my veggies on my own. But I may just go with what's available. I have my guidelines to help manage the wild.

PLEASE continue to be our Team Leader, Tammae - we'd be lost without you!

I totally identify with the two things you learned in 2016:
1) I have perfected the 'art' of gaining weight whilst sticking to 500-600 calories twice a week.
2) sticking to the rules twice a week doesn't mean I can eat as much cake or chocolate as I like on the other five days!

I'm not weighing myself until tomorrow though, as I've only got back home this evening.

My weight is up 10 pounds! emoticon emoticon emoticon
I do not feel worthy at all to be leader of this group! I love 5:2 and will be a lifetime faster BUT to be a leader? I may be scaring more people off with my own failures than being a leader of encouragement.

It is all about learning from our mistakes... our poor choices... and believe me I have made some poor choices for my health recently. I've used this sinus cold and the Christmas season with family as an excuse to indulge mindlessly. I'm thankful to know fasting can help me break this seasonal cycle of doom! My positive thought is I know fasting works for weight loss when done properly. (I still have 70 pounds less on my frame.)
Time to get back to the basics! emoticon emoticon emoticon

What have I learned?
1. I can fast twice per week and STILL gain weight if I eat mindlessly on the 5 days.
2. Fasting is fairly easy for me... it is the other days I need to think about!

My plan of attack:
I personally need to jump into a very low carb sugar free diet to get back on track.
I'm also going to apply 4:3 in January to get a jump start on this bloating.

I won't give up being a leader. We all have our ups and downs and hopefully as a team we can learn from one another. If YOU love doing the fast diet and want to be added as a leader I welcome you. Just let me know.

Not a problem... asking questions and chatting is what this team is all about!

My salads have some type of protein & fat (walnuts, bacon, boiled egg, tuna or pork, cheese) and the rest is veggies. My husband loves bacon ranch dressing. I like variety. So when I make our salads it will have some protein as well as fat. I do not count the calories but load the bowl mostly with veggies.
