Today is day 6 for me. Much easier than prior times, but I'm very tired. Guess I must have really fallen off the wagon. Time to get those muscles fat-adjusted.

This morning I called the library to renew The Whole30 book and was surprised to hear it is on "hold" for someone else who wants to read it, too. The book is not only full of information and recipes but it has really artistic photos of foods. It sure is a heavy book in weight. emoticon

Today I bought the entire 30 day supply of Whole30 foods and beverages, not counting perishables that will need to be bought once a week. I wonder how I will be doing on day 30. This is preparation day so I start tomorrow morning.

Whereas I've been reading the info online now I have the book and that will make a difference in my progress.

I will start that day, too, so we can compare and support each other as we go through the days. From what I've read it can become more difficult as the days go by. I think, though, that we've read enough SparkPeople expert advise on how to manage our difficult days. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hi Helen! W30 is designed to be a 30 day elimination diet. Think of it as a reset. My first w30 helped me fine tune my whole food lifestyle. I highly recommend giving it a try. My diet/lifestyle continues to evolve based on N-=1 experimentation. But anytime I want a reset, I start with W30 approved foods.

I'm starting one Monday, May 6th. I've found that I need a week of prep, for food and emotions. I also like starting on a Monday so I have had a full weekend of organization.

Let's do it and do it well!

CAPECODSANDI,
yes about 5 years ago. The ideal protein diet is a great diet, but buying those packages is expensive (they want to make money, like any company does). Since then I've transitioned to low carb, and lower yet to keto. I'm leaving this team. If you want to find me I'm on "Team Keto!".

RYDERB, I am on a round right now, R3D7. I am 59, tried all the "low carb" "high protein" diets out there, this is the first time I have actually felt better, lost some weight (I am down 30ish pounds) got my A1C back in line and I am NOT tempted to go back to my wicked ways. I am one of the people that needed to do a 60 day round back in April and it worked!! I have successfully been 80/20 until I started this round and NOT gained any weight back or let it derail me. I LOVE this lifestyle and I think it is all about finding what works for you.

Hi James it has been a very long time. I believe I had just lost 85 pounds doing the Ideal Protein diet, when we chatted first, possible 4-5 years ago. Uhm that diet did not do the trick for me!! I am also low carb due to my diabetes. I wanted to accomplish a few things with the Whole30 plan, detox from sugar, see what might be causing inflammation and joint pain and to see if a gluten free diet may help as well. Of course I was also hoping to shed some pounds and get my blood sugars in line.

The NSV's (non scale victories) have been, better sleep, less anxiety, less stomach upset, better bowel health, AIC in the mid 5"s, all other labs within normal limits, less joint pain, overall better health!!

I believe this is the plan for me. I can live with this, it just works for me. I am not perfect, none of us are but I have the freedom to deviate and for whatever reasons it has not for a second derailed me.

RYDERB,
its sort of like that old quote "everything in moderation". Exercise is one of those things, its good, but beyond some point more is not better, you then get injuries, or strains, ... etc.

To tell you the truth, there are things that are bad for you, and there is not point in a moderate amount of such a thing, like arsenic.

James, you're right! Actually, you're the one that inspired me to research low carb. emoticon
Realizing that health and weight are linked to my body's hormonal responses not just to food, but to everything, emotions, stress levels, quality of sleep, and exercise. Thank goodness I finally realized the connection; because I was over exercising and W30-ing myself into gaining fat!!
Now I know, when it comes to exercise that more is just more and not necessarily better. Less can yield better results. And just because something is W30 approved, like sweet potatoes, doesn't mean you won't gain weight if you eat too much or any at the wrong time of day. I was starting every morning with sweet potato hash. And adding sweet potatoes to almost every meal. Now I know controlling insulin response is the key. .

And I totally agree with you on fat. I really like Mark Sisson's whoke food approach to Keto. I recently read Dirty Genes, I found it fascinating. Definitely made me realize that I have to keep an open mind and be willing to pay attention to my body.

RYDERB,
it is interesting that you wrote:
"I feel my best if I eat a primal diet, which is similar to paleo but is higher fat and lower protein."

Frankly we are both headed in about the same direction. I eat a lot more real foods, and indeed whole foods, than I ever ate before. I eat just enough protein, but not more, and I eat higher fat. I don't work hard at the fat, I just eat fattier things, like say prime rib, or fatty cuts of meat.

You and I could probably get along very well at supper time. emoticon

Hi James! It's great to see you're still Sparking! I'm sorry to hear your body is still out of whack and sorry you've needed to start using medication; but very glad you're seeing the results you need to stay healthy.

W30 is designed to be a Reset. By eliminating known inflammatory foods and chemicals from your body for 30 days, you give your body the chance to heal. And most people experience significant health improvements; but some people get better results with a W60 or W90. And the post W30 food reintroduction phase is an important part of the process. You test your body's response to the eliminated foods and substances one at a time to help determine which foods/substances your body can tolerate and how each makes you feel. What each person does with the information is up to them.

Personally, post W30, I learned that I feel my best if I eat a primal diet, which is similar to paleo but is higher fat and lower protein. My body can also tolerate some grass fed dairy products, raw is better. And when I don't consume any sugar. But I've never fully explored a Keto lifestyle. It's on my to do list. I've also incorporated extended and intermittent fasting. Both work well for me.

That said, over this last year, I was dealing with a lot of stressful family issues, spending long days caring for my parents, and I really struggled to take care of myself. There were days, weekends, and even weeks, where I ate foods that I knew would make me feel less than my best and that I didn't drink enough water, exercise, or get enough sleep. But struggling wasn't giving up. I never gave up. And even on my ugliest food day, I wasn't eating store bought processed GMO, non organic crap.

I needed to do another W30 to get sugar, gluten, and alcohol out of my system. And to get back to a regular fitness and sleep schedule. So far I'm feeling so much better. But, I'm still working on finding the nutrient ratios and foods that will make me feel my best. V

Marki (RYDERB),
you mean after whole 30 you went back to eating other stuff? I guess I don't under stand Whole30.

Me? Even though I'm very low carb my blood sugar has gone back up, so I'm back on medication, which is in addition to eating low carb. I figure my liver is producing the carbs (gluconeogenesis). This is needed to fuel on part of the brain that needs carbs even if you eat none, but my theory is that is part of my anatomy is out of whack.

Metformins biggest impact is on the production of glucose in the liver, in reducing that. Thank goodness that there is a drug for this.

emoticon Yes. I know you're the low carb king emoticon I definitely feel better the less fruit & starch I eat. Are you full Keto? I bought the 30 Day Keto Cleanse and I just can't make myself start it. emoticon I've made some of the recipes that are whole food based and they've been yummy. CLARE1952 if losing fat is your biggest Why, you should definitely experiment with the amount and types of fruits & starches. I too saw amazing results until I didn't. I finally realized the sweet potato & bison hash I was eating for meal 1 was holding me back. Tracking my hunger levels before and after my meals helped too. I'm feeling and doing much better now eating higher fat, more green veggies, and a lot less fruit.

SRA you answered a question I have. Thank you.

Portion control seems to be neglected on the site I visited. I put on weight so easily that I need to know this will help me lose fat!

Cheers.

I would love to know whether it works well for people.

Wow! No more joint issues is amazing! Congratulations! Good luck with your dairy decision. I rarely consume regular dairy anymore. It causes instant inflammation and other digestive issues for me. But thankfully I don't have any issues with raw dairy products from grassfed animals.

I just finished my 2nd round! Feeling great and planning to stay compliant, except for weighing whenever I want to and maybe trying a few SWYPO recipes ;) I've had major joint issues that have been gone since starting W30 and can't imagine going back! Last time I reintroduced dairy and it went BAD so we'll see what I'm brave enough to reintro this time!

This is my 5th whole30. I am on day 23. When my friend told me about it. She said not to worry about the portions. I did lose weight, about 13 lbs. the first 3 times. The 4th time, I didn't lose anything. I went back and looked at a few things. 1. portion control. I'm not at as little portions as they want me to eat, but I've reduced the amounts closer to the recommendation. 2. staying away from fruits. I was eating a lot of fruit, and raisins. (I am a sugar addict) Booo no raisins. 3. reducing the amounts of nuts. 4. increased leafy greens. I'm hoping these things will help.

Biggest problem is when I'm done with the whole 30 always something presents itself, like alcohol, or treats that totally throws away all my good effort.

Anyone else have this problem.

Jan (JRWELL58),
no I'm not single handedly keeping things afloat.

I just have an interest in Whole30 because it is more natural eating. Some overlap with Keto. I'm more of a lurker here.

I'm trying very hard to stick to Whole30 because I know it works.

Boy is it harder for me this time!

I'm trying to keep plenty of whole food in the house. I don't cook meals because my husband won't eat them. He only eats hamburger or sandwich meat, with rye bread, and cheese. That's all. yogurt for dessert. Coke for beverage. he is strange. My other husband loved all kinds of meats and vegetables.

I'm eating a lot of eggs for breakfast.

Then chicken or turkey, and vegetables for other meals.

It can get boring.

Okay, I tried Vegan for three days and my BS got out of control because I was having to eat whole grain bread, oatmeal, brown rice to get enough protein.

So, back to WHOLE30 to give it a shot. I know it works, I've had success with it before!

I need to stay very low carb and Whole30 works for that since no sugar, no processed, no grains, no legumes are allowed.

Basically, Whole 30 means I can have just about any meat I want, other than processed meat. And just about any vegetable I want other than corn and legumes.

Of course it also means I can't have my butter! I'm from the deep South where we do love our butter.

Luckily I have a bottle of olive oil on hand.

I Think I am going to do a more strict elimination diet, that my functional doctor recommended, and read in Food Freedom Forever. The only thing is it uses a pea protein, in the Clearvite Protein shake. Then I am going Whole30 and we will see if I go transition to Paleo, with whatever Whole30 resets I need.

MARINEMAMA (Cindy),

Whole30 isn't necessarily low carb, but it is a heck of a lot healthier than eating processed stuff.

From a low carb point of view let me tell you, just in case you didn't know already, that eating high carb stuff has an insulin reaction to keep your blood sugar from going too high (and high is not a good thing). Insulin does this by assisting blood sugar out of the blood and into cells, and that includes fat cells. Insulin has the nickname of "the fat storage hormone".

So if you are aiming for fat loss, besides needing to eat fewer calories, it really really helps to make those calories come from fat and protein, not from carbs, that way insulin is low, and body fat is not locked up, and like in your case, melts away.

A one day carb overload is about a 2 to 3 day time off that weight loss path. Twice a week and virtually no weight loss occurs. So stick with your plan! A deviation is not worth it.

MARINEMAMA,

I'm a lurker here. I'm low carb, so low it is Keto, I eat something like 30 grams of net carbs (not counting fibre) a day, and maybe 50 on a high day, which is pretty rare.

But in my opinion, whatever you have changed your eating style from before, to after, you have to come to terms that the new style (in this case Whole30) is better for you. Either to loose body fat, or keep blood sugar better, or feel better, whatever ...

I have accepted that I cannot eat like I did before. I don't eat high carb things, so no rice, no potatoes, no pasta, etc. I don't say poor me, no, I just think that this way of eating is healthier for me.

I hope I've provided some inspiration.

MARINEMAMA,

Amen. That is the truth. One just plain feel healthier (and is healthier) when eating "right", not eating over processed stuff, but food closer to nature.

My wife is convinced that it isn't just the big numbers, grams of carbs, fat, and protein, but a host of small things that come in something like a green pepper, some micro nutrients and biologically active chemicals, in the right combination and proportion, in natural foods that make that difference.

I feel she is right.

The ticker ishows under goal weight due to the weight loss on the W30. Typo below post. Completed 30 days. It definitely is healthier eating for me. I have traveled off plan a bit more than I want. So back at it tomorrow. I just plain feel better while following.

MARINEMAMA,

Your ticker show 2.8 pounds under your goal weight. So are you eating Whole30 as a health way to eat, not weight loss exactly?

MARINEMAMA,

As I look more into whole30 I see that I have more in common with it than I first thought. It is a Paleo diet, and although I'm not Paleo I do have philosophical leanings in that direction. I'm certainly eating a whole lot less processed foods than I used to.

As I look at the Whole30 guidelines:
- no sugar
- no grain
- no alcohol
- no dairy
- no msg
- limited fruit

I follow all those things, except for dairy. But I recognise that dairy is new to humans, only in the last few thousand years, and indeed many people probably have issues with digesting dairy and don't even know it because they keep consuming it and don't make the connection. If you have a dairy issue chances are you don't know it until you stop it for a few weeks and slowly recover, and 30 days is long enough to recover.

But the point I wanted to make here is about nutrition. I take the view that you want to get the most of a nutrient per calorie eaten, and I compare foods that way.

If you compare the vitamin C, per calorie, green peppers rate 4 times higher than a classic orange, and to get your daily vitamin C needs about 1/2 a pepper is enough, very easy to fit in a salad.

Of course you can compare any vitamin, nutrient, protein, .. that way.

If you look at refined sugar, it has calories, 4 per gram, but if you look at any mineral, vitamin, nutrient, it scores zero. So other than calories, it has nothing at all, nothing your body needs to maintain itself. Grains are a close second in that all calorie and low nutrition race. That is how I think of food, and Whole30 in its rules fits that idea too.

Cindy,
I'm glad your headache is gone. Frankly it is the symptom of a very physical addiction to high carb things. Most folks just aren't aware of the addiction, because they never change their eating pattern, or even think that foods can be addictive.

Once the headache time is over there really is no need to add salt, I guess you can do it if you like the taste, and whole 30 is less processed food (which typically has a lot of added salt) so adding some back in is not so bad, but RYDERB is the expert here on the rules of Whole30.

I'm not a Whole30 guy, I am a low carb guy, very low carb. I recognized your headache symptoms as being related to low carb and electrolytes, and though whole30 is not low carb, it is lower carb than the standard american diet.

I'm an active "lurker" on this team.

Hi James ,

I added more salt :). I have never added salt to my foods before, but have paid more attention to it now. My headache is gone! I must admit the added salt was yum...great added flavor.

Moving on to day 6! Woot! Making a gazpacho soup later but need to find a replacement for spicy tomato juice..any suggestions??

Cindy (MARINEMAMA),

When I do that, I just get about a tablespoon of salt, dissolve it in a half a cup to a cups worth of warm water (whatever it takes to dissolve it all), and gulp it down. Not exactly pleasant, but done in a few seconds.

Any headache I've had due to a change in diet is feeling better in 20 to 30 minutes, really about as fast as any headache medication. A headache medication targets the symptom, salt more likely targets the cause, an electrolyte issue due to a change in diet and body chemistry rebalancing around that.

But don't worry, within 10 days your body will find a new balance, you won't need extra salt forever, just during a transition, and frankly you are about half way through the transition.

MARINEMAMA,

The headaches could be the change in diet. I suggest more water, and some salt with that.

Most likely an electrolyte sort of issue. It will pass, but until then water and salt.

Tomorrow I'm going to make one of our favorite meals. Red cabbage slaw from Nom Nom paleo with grilled tri-tip. And I'll be serving fresh strawberries with whipped coconut cream.

I'm reminding myself that each day without sugar gets easier. The trick for me is sleep. So, I'm off to bed.

Congratulations! Having the weekend to prep will really help. What I did when I decided that I (and by default my husband too since I do all the cooking & shopping) were going to do our first W30 was make a list of all our favorite meals and then work on making them W30 compliant. Eat things you love. A W30 does not need to feel like punishment. emoticon
