I have sensitive hearing, and the sound of whistling is one of the worst sounds for me to tolerate along with music pouring out of someone's earbuds/headphones. I finally invested in a nice set of noise canceling headphones. The active noise canceling works without any audio playing. However, it does not help with a co-worker who insists on using a very loud mechanical keyboard rather than a standard one.

My co-workers do plenty of annoying things. Plenty of them. But I'm sure that on more than one occasion I've done something just as irritating for them. If I'm irritated to the point of it affecting my work, I ask as politely as possible if the co-worker can modify their behavior. That seems much fairer than venting behind their backs or continuing to live with the resentment and anger.

He meant to say 'mentally lazy', NOT 'visual'.

Incidentally, the couple interviews I've had, they seem to vet me on high-levels of computer literacy of all sorts. Not getting these jobs.

But I refuse to tell the absolute TRUTH!

Let my next job prospect not test me before the fact, but TEST me after being hired. I am up to the challenge!!

So I'm a 20 something working on a team with a lot of other 20 somethings. There is this guy who came to my desk 6 times today to ask me to teach him how to reset the pin for one of his accounts. Well, I did it the first and second time, and anticipating it happening again, I sent out an email with VERY detailed instructions (with screenshots) - I'm talking seriously remedial here. And then he comes back...again...and again. Why? Because he is "a visual person, who likes to be walked through it rather than reading instructions." Seriously?!?! Like I don't have more important things to do! But really, who in this generation is so computer illiterate?

I was announced a layoff, and it came on suddenly.

So on the next to the last day, my coworker got wind of me hammering out the last of my negotiations for "severance" settlement - this one non-monetary. I posited that I'd had to bring my coworker up from computer illiteracy - no willingness on her part to learn on her own time (tiny-ass company, and WHOEVER of much of any size allows time/space/provisions for on-the-job computer skills training in the U.S. anymore?)--and that that is 4 years of technical support training skills that I will claim on my resume ...

Problem is, we've got no private emails; and I'm not going to mark a non-private email "personal". I don't have mental space for contradictions in terms .. so guess who was treated as if I really am a b***h, stepping on toes?

I am 59 years old guys ... she is 66 soon. Have a laugh on the both of us!!!!

These are great...I have a few to add.
Our office has this MAN who uses the WOMAN's bathroom. We see him go in and we know when he was in there because he leaves behind his mail in the trash. He cannot be confused about this since he is the boss's son...
We have the guy who takes a 2 hour lunch break. And he doesn't answer his cell for customers...
There is a woman who brought her children to work. She even came back right after having a baby and brought the baby to the office. That was kind of interesting to have a cute little baby as a destresser.
Private phone calls, playing on the phone ect.

work with a cop who puffs his chest and calls himself the "alpha Dog". Hi real name is one of those southern names, like Billie-Bob.You my have seen him on you tube --something about police using excessive force. He replaced a cop how was well loved and respected so it is hard to stomach this guy.

We have offices with sliding doors but the walls are thin. There is a co-worker who, when they get upset or fustrated will start whistling like a bird, you know that choppy kind of high pitched whistle. For some reason that just grates on me. :-)

Oh man. I have this girl that I work with who emails me no less than 50 times a day about how bad her life sucks or if she's working on a show (I work in the closed-captioning industry) she hates. 50 times. I'm not kidding. I can't handle it. I was friends with her at first, but I didn't know she was so effing crazy. Ugh.

can I just "vent" for a minute about my boss instead of co-worker? My boss either thinks I am incompetent --or she just micromanages everything. I know from talking to other people in the office that she "re-works" things they do all the time -- not just my stuff. I like my boss on a personal level but feel pretty useless as her assistant since she re-does all my work. I have talked to her recently about this -- and I thought she understood that I want to "own" and finish more of my own projects. But the next day she completely rewrote a notice I was sending out. Sick of it. Mondays get harder and harder. I totally feel like just giving up. I feel like when she asks me to do something just saying "why don't you do it yourself and save us both the time ! "

These are hillarious!!! I have an office that I sit in very rarely. Usually I'm in the courtroom, where poorly behaved attorneys are the biggest problem! People in custody get a little raunchy too at times, spitting and making comments about other people, usually women, but I expect that from them. ;)

Holy cow! Ditto to ALL the cubicle annoying, inconsiderate, LAZY coworkers we need to put up with. I had a GREAT time reading these. Very funny (but not). The only thing I can't relate to is the guy hanging on my wall who likes me! THAT is creepy. Ignoring him seems like it worked! Anyway, to all the cubicle nightmares (or daymares) we must put up with I say, it is what it is. Just take a walk once in awhile to get away. For me, I'm keeping my eyes open to maybe transfer to a different department. It's just TOO SLOW and BORING at this desk. I don't think any of us is ever BUSY (there are 5 in one office - too many in my humble opinion) And yes I have the one who TALKS too much, gets a lot of personal calls and walks around all day getting into everyone elses business, the one who is oblivious and just WORKs? all the time, the one who doesn't care what is going on, and the old one who should have retired YEARS ago. Then there is ME, the new one, who learns nothing and just sits here most of the day trying to find something to do to keep busy. WASTED talent I tell you.

Talk about office etiquette.
Please tell me why an idiot coworker leaned on my cubicle wall when I was on the phone.
When I asked did he need anything he said no and stayed there.
Not only is it rude!
It implies that you are eavesdropping.
I am sure the guy likes me but OOOO SO NOT MY TYPE YUCK!
I have told him so too,
I have to be a little more adamant about this though I think.
Maybe this used to be ok when my workstation was empty but SORRY BUDDY I AM THERE NOW!
WHAT AN OAF!

I don't think it's rude to spray perfume at your desk...I think it's about considering the people around you...I think maybe stepping out of the office to spray would be a considerate thing to do. I personally want to spray my perfume but there are several people around me that would have a fit...I want to say maybe we should put all those sensitive people together in one bunch...smile..but then I think about "what if it was me" I would not want to be singled out...so I just wait until I get back from lunch and spray before I get back in the office..I guess we'll call it "OFFICE ETIQUETTE"..SMILE.

Wow..funny stories...I do have a cubical..so I guess I should be happy about that..I am irrated most at work by the women that always talk about how "fat"someone is...I think that is so rude to use that word in the work place...but they don't care..I say my problem maybe eating to much and overweight..but I would rather deal with that than smoking, drugs or some of the other habits or problems those coworkers have.

A few jobs ago, I had a guy on one side of me who farted! Gross. And the guy on the other side of me was running his own real estate business on the side and would tell our co-workers that he couldn't go to meetings because he was busy and then he would leave to sell a house or something. When he wasn't doing that, he would sleep and snore really loudly! I wanted to call him just so the loud noise would startle him awake, but I never did since the phones have caller ID.

Now I'm in a new group and everyone is pretty great. Im lucky.

My name is Julie and I'm from Milpitas, California!

My job is to be talking to people on the phone all day. LOL. but, i do understand have some of the same kinds of co-workers as described by others. i listen to music in one ear and listen to the callers in the other. so, i pretty much drown out any background noise. LMAO

Yes I am sure we have all had our share of annoying co workers at some point and it seems to make your day harder to deal with. I myself have an annoying boss that stares right at the side of my head and feels as though some days he is burning a hole in my head!! LOL. I would so die for cubicals. Those of you with cubicals should try to make a game out of the annoying ones if you can. Like the hacker smoker one. Count how many times he/she hacks that day and use that number tomorrow for how many calf raises to do at your desk while sitting down. Something like that. Let me know if anyone does this, it may make for a fun challenge and venting space. LOl Hope all have a great day.

I cant stand the food police. Im on weight watchers and Friday i brought in some food and it was a good amount. As i put it on my plate, i got a very judgmental gasp and an "Oh my god" from a coworker. I wanted to tell her to shut up as this was weighed, measured and accounted for. I feel like saying, "did you pay for this? no?, then shut up".

Isn't it funny how all of a sudden you can look down at your stomach and wonder to yourself, "Who put that there"?

About annoying co-workers...it looks like we all have our share. I really like the positive suggestions to dealing with them. I know that sometimes there is a downward spiral of irritability when someone starts out in a bad mood. It seems to spread like wildfire. When I catch myself getting sucked in, I excuse myself and take some deep breaths and center myself. I then remind myself that I can only be responsible for myself and to let the other stuff go. I hope this help.

Oh, the lady with concerns about spraying a touch of perfume...well, it depends on if your co-workers object. I love the smell of most perfumes, but I have asthma and fragrances always trigger my asthma and then I have to use my inhaler. Perhaps just checking with your co-workers to see if it is okay would ease your mind.

I am still trying to figure out a co-worker that when she is in a bad mood, she will find ways to make your day miserable. Friday was that day. She was loud and did not care that I was on a conference call. When it was her turn to be on a conference call, she sent an email to me and another co-worker to keep it down because she was on a call. I think that if you are not respectful of other co-workers rude, that you have not right to ask for respect yourself. Thank you! I feel so much better getting this out.

My boss who i really care about has Fridays off and on her days off my co-worker and someone else constantly talk bad about her. I listened a few times, then went home and felt the worst guilt. One morning they started again. One said she is such a perfectionist like it was a terrible thing. I said, I love her. I want to do a good job and im glad she is my boss. The gossip about her has stopped at least around me so now i can have a clear conscience. No one dares to talk about her to me.

I heard about this on a radio program I was listening to (Denise Linn, I think): If someone around you is irritating or draining your energy, etc. you take a small piece of paper and write their name in the middle of the paper, circle it with a yellow marker. On the paper write: [name of person] is sealed in the light. I send [name of person] love and reverence but I am leaving their energy behind. Put the piece of paper in the freezer. I'm at my wits end with a couple people in my office area so it's worth a try!

I just started a new job and have had people complain about others. I know if i add anything or listen, its the kiss of death. I just turn my head or act like i dont hear it.

Isn't it funny how all of a sudden you can look down at your stomach and wonder to yourself, "Who put that there"?

I do medical transcription and the woman next to me is selling stuff like food from home and jewelry so there is always a crowd around making lots of noise. Her cell phone goes off and she talks really loud. I was whispering to myself as i was working to remember something and she brought it up like it was bothering her but all her noise is supposed to be ok.

Sure sounds noisy in there!

I guess I shouldn't complain--the things that annoy me about my co-workers don't directly effect me, it's just that they take advantage. And even though I occasionally decide that I am going to leave early or come in late, I always end up doing what I should instead because it's stealing from the company and I just can't do it!

What do you do when it's your boss who won't stop talking and gossiping??? I work in a small office - only 6 employees. Our vice-president drives me crazy because he is constantly carrying on these long conversations, that usually have NOTHING to do with work. Heaven forbid that you have a legitimate work-related question for him, because it turns into an hour long gab session that you can't get away from! He talks about his wife and kids all having ADD, but doesn't realize that he has a problem with it also. I've learned to wear my headphones with the music loud when I'm at my desk, so that if he appears at my office door to gossip, I don't always hear him. Most times he'll walk away, but other times, he'll tap me on the shoulder and scare the living daylights out of me! Then there's my co-worker who whines and complains all the time and has the annoying habit of constant throat-clearing. We're really in trouble when the two of them get together - they don't get much work done.

I have to agree with you all throughout this thread!! I have a sigher near me. Forever sighing these huge sighs of discontent upon reading email or answering the phone. However...I think I am the one you wer talking about breaking out into tantrums!! I get these emails that are so moronic and i HAVE to let it out or I will explode! HOwever, I say it to myself and not where others will hear me...so I am probably not the trantrum one but probably the crazy chic who talks to herself. emoticon

I have my own office to work in, which is a very good thing. I get involved in my own work and stay out of all the picky office gossip and attitudes which run rampid and I have no use for. HR has even had meetings regarding gossip getting out of hand. I have even heard that some of the gossip is about me. lol Don't know, don't care. My opinion: If they have nothing else better to do with their lives but gossip, more power to them. Pretty sad. lol

So true! I have always said that one of the things I love about my job is that of the hundreds of people I have contact with frequently, there are no more than a handful whom I dislike. That's a pretty darn good percentage!

In every office around the world there are those workers who are loud, gumsmacking, pen clickers, throat clears and etc, etc, etc. and yes those who don't or won't give you the info you need to get the job done

Just smile and enjoy life

THis might technically be venting, but I hate it when my co-workers question me instead of answering my requests for information. That probably sounds wrong, but I support the head of the department, so when I ask someone something it isn't idle curiousity, it's because I have a project to do for him, and I need the info!

It ends up taking three times as long to get a simple thing done!

I agree. Might be a good thing she quit.

Tell me about it... I have some crazy characters who work in a very close vicinity to me. I can't even tell you the extent of it. For example, there is an older lady who actually just quit, but she thinks that some of the people at work shoot tiny darts into her when they walk by her office. And, then she starts whining and rubbing ice on her skin to alleviate the pain... but there isn't really anything there.

She is constantly running to close her door when we have visitors. She is extremely paranoid. I feel sorry for her actually. It's sad that she believes that we are all out to get her when in all actuality, most of the people I work with are all great and definitely not shooting darts at anyone.

I just moved my desk to a different part of the office and I am still adjusting to being able to hear everybody's business! Kind of interesting at times....

Hi all! MELSGIRL06, you started a very sensitive topic! :o)
On our floor, we have dozens of cubicles and we hear EVERYTHING anybody says, especially if a person has that I'm-not-loud-it's-just-my-voice-carries-fa
r attitude. A positive side to it: when I need to make a call and don't want others in my business, I HAVE TO go outside to use my cell - and that means I'm getting off my butt and actually HAVE TO MOVE!! :o)
A funny note: I had my "Office Space" moment today when a very loud voice asked "Y'all have my stapler?"

I think we all must work in the same place!
I work in an open office, no cubes. Not only do I have to hear what these people do but see it as well! I have a gum cracker, a person who is constantly singing, humming, talking and/or clearing his throat, the receptionist's radio is always too loud. Oh, she's ALWAYS on personal calls & doesn't answer the office phone. She's rude, mean (not just to her fellow co-workers, but our customers!) and always in other's business.
I almost forgot the pen clickers!

Note to self. Every time I think about complaining that I work alone in my office and find it very lonely and kinda boring, I will remind myself that there is always someone worse off than me. My sympathies girls!

I can't stand people who crack their gum.

My pet peeve around the office is people who come and go as they please and still get paid for 8 hours--and then put in for O/T! Oh, and when they are in the office, they are on the phone or "elsewhere".

I know sometimes you just want to ask them "how do you get all your work done when your on the phone ALL day" and sometimes I want to put up a huge ETIQUETTE and MANNERS sign that explains what is bad!! I just had to vent! And gum smacking doesn't usually bother me, but she doesn't actually chew the gum in her mouth it's in the front of her mouth on one side HANGNING out with mouth wide open and then in-between she will pop it! One of my co-workers finally said to her one day "Geesh you enjoying your gum over there?" She just laughed and said oh yeah it's really good!! UGH!
