Plenty of blame to go around. Bloomberg and the NY Road Runners Club in particular. One caller to a radio talk show last week put it well; "Do you want to be pouring bottles of water on youe head while running through neighborhoords that don't have any?" That's not missing the point, that is the point.

Some people missed the point. The point was after the devastation it was ridiculous for someone to say the marathon would go on and have people waste more money that could have and would have gone to the victims. It is such a tragedy!

It was very nice to see the racers donate and help some of the flood survivors yesterday. Our community went through a terrible flood last September due to tropical storm Lee and I can tell you the last thing anyone would have wanted was a marathon running through town. People lost everything and some still have not recovered. Sorry for those who lost a few dollars on their tickets, but...oh well.

Taking it one step at a time.

I heartily agree and second your sentiments NIGHTSKYSTAR. No one can be right on top of things and make the finest of judgment calls during every waking moment of one's career. I think Bloomberg tried to do the best he could with competing interests of MAJOR proportions!

I believe they hoped they could still make it happen with maybe some good coming out of it..and i think the Mayor had some other more important things on his mind like helping those devastated. If you have never gone through a disaster like this..lost everything..including family members and friends not sure if you can relate....but its a tragedy and a race is the least of the worries at this point. To flood NY city with thousands of people that just want to run would be a HUGE mistake right now..the food and rooms and manpower are needed for the hurricane victims.
Of COURSE noone caused it..but we all need to do all we can to HELP not to make matters worse.
Also..I think the general public (including me) has no CLUE what goes on in government, much as we might think we do. The Mayor may have had to consult with lawyers, etc to be sure the city wasnt punishied more for doing the right thing. He really doesnt have time for something like this...i back him 100% in the decision, and hope people will come to realize the race organizers themselves should have taken a stand early and said NO, we cant do that at this time we will reschodule. Sad that people are angry about it..and very sad that they cant see the pain and ruin that is in that great city right now.

What does that have to do with it. No one caused what happened to all the people that had to endure Sandy, no one would have EVER wanted that to happen and we have certainly given lots of money to the Red Cross to help as much as possible. Your Mayor did cause hurt to other people, he could have prevented that and they would have been able to give even more money to the Red Cross for the victims.

REGILIEH, I have friends, acquaintances and co-workers who have lost a lot more than some money.

All my friends agree except they do not think well of Bloomberg or whatever his name as it seems pretty ridiculous that he said in the beginning and for several days that it was going to happen. He should have been smart enough to say it was canceled in the beginning.

I so understand the disappointment but i hope everyone that is angry understands the devastation and how very wrong it would have been to have the marathon. Its noones fault...its a bad deal all the way around.

That is a great idea, I hope people get the message. Because of them cancelling it so late after saying it was a go, I had friends lose a lot of money on airplane flights.

If you are trained and ready and in the area, drive about 1+ hour north to Goshen NY and try out the Hambletonian Marathon course. This event is scheduled to start in 2013, so its completely unofficial, and there will be some, but not full race support - but its a marathon course. And there is no charge.

NYC was expecting $350 Million in economic impact from the race. If we can can get a few extra dollars into *our* local economy, this post was worth it.
