Amberzade,
this may be true for some people, but i've found that i'm more of a creature of memories and experience than of rational correlations. Thoughts just pop into my head out of nowhere, and if there's indeed an observable link between them, it takes me back to the past, not to some kind of Logic chain. there's absolutely no Logic in the things i think. i can look at a a random building while i walk and think of the sun shining on a hometown beach or the taste of the junior icecreams i had as a little girl. or maths. i have no control over my thoughts and most of the time i don't understand how each thought reflects another one. i thought the same went for everyone, but apparently i was wrong.
yes, language plays some part in what we think, but for me this ins't usual, because as i said, i'm more of the experiental type; i don't need language to get in touch with myself and the things inside me.
each one thinks in a different way. yeah, to some extent our language affects how we think about the usual stuff, but if you think of us as newborns, untouched beings, this can't be true. Language's part becomes obvious when we think and talk or try to solve math problems. We just can't do maths without language. words takes us to words which have meanings and meanings attach to our experiences and we think we know why we thought what we did when we really don't.
it's all fabrications.
I'm sorry if you thought i got agitated because people here disagree with me, but i really didn't . emoticon i love freedom of speech and i'd defend it with my life. it was a surprise actually to see that i was the only one of that opinion. but that's all,

Hi Cosmicwatcher,

What you've said has made me think through what and why I believe the quote.

We are relating, associating beings. I think if you examine the idea of random thoughts popping up, you will find that there is in fact, nothing random about them. They are related to something, and associated with something.

In general these random thoughts are connected to a premise, a basic belief that you may hold. Sometimes it's an important one, sometimes not.

Also ......something else what you said made me think about is language. The words available to us .... the language that we learn to speak in ..... limits and shapes the meaning and what we are able to communicate and understand. For example, the Eskimos have 50 words for snow. What would we do without language? How does our language limit the concepts we can communicate? Finally, if thoughts are random and just pop ..... what would happen if you had no language ....

If you strip a computer down to it's basics ... it communicates in zeroes and ones. Then there is another layer added ..... I guess we could use DOS as an example ... then yet another layer .... which we could call the windows or mac interface ....... We are windows/Mac machines, long past zeroes and ones, far removed from the days when we could say that we were random/reactive beings.

Do not be put off when people don't agree with you ... I like people who are provocative .... and you've made me think.

I agree we respond to our thoughts, I believe we have a choice about our response. Rich Hanson, a neurophysiologist, has written a book - Hardwiring Happiness. He posits that how we choose to respond to our thoughts can change the hardwiring in our brains.

Challenging thought that thoughts just pop into our heads. I don't think so. However, I do agree we have total control over what we do with those thoughts unless we have been diagnosed with a mental disease or disorder. Where thoughts come from seems less important than what I choose to do with them.... which is what I think is the thrust of the quote.

I don't agree with that quote. Thoughts just pop up in our heads out of nowhere. We then choose if we'll contemplate more on them, or if we'll let them go and forget about them. But they just pop. So there's really not a choice there. As we grow into better people, better thoughts of better quality pop up, but we're never perfect; and transformation just doesn't happen overnight... there are phases in our lives that we think we're good being who we are, when we're really not; but that knowledge comes a little too late, so it just doesn't matter anymore.
