I am lucky to have these great memories. My sister passed these along to her daughters and each of them to their children. All the holiday stuff is done as a family from the decorating, cooking and wrapping of packages. I so wanted to go there for our Christmas but Hubby's job did not allow this year. When we got married this was a gift my Hubby gave me was being with my family during the hoildays

I grew up in the good times, when family was important (or maybe it was just my parents, family was first). We were apparently limited in money, but my sister and I were not aware of that fact. We had the most important things in life,,,,,,love from Mom and Dad and we never even realised that our Christmas sleds were used and reworked and repainted by our father.. We went out as a family and cut our tree and my parents made it a big deal to come home have a hot stew or soup, put up the tree and decorate it. Mom made snow from Ivory flakes and we strung popcorn and cranberries for garlen. We had lights and precious cotton wrapped ornaments for the tree. I believe this s why I love the holidays so. Al the love in our home

Oh, you brought back some wonderful memories. We vacationed at a spot without electricity or indoor plumbing except a cold water faucet in the kitchen. Dad would start a wood fire in the potbellied stove in the living room on cold mornings.
My DH's grandparents lived from the first flight to landing on the moon!

Just read the comments on this forum & I'm not so sure age is a big factor. I'm younger, slightly, than you CarolJean64 but grew up in a small western town where we still had crank telephones, names and numbers that one of the local phone operators had to place for us. It also meant out-houses, wood burning stoves for cooking and heat, etc. etc. Me, I'm glad to be living with modern gadgets but am always amazed at what I've seen change in my brief life-time. My FIL was 95 when he went on to the spirit world & I loved his tales of what he had seen change.
As to year end, I'm looking forward to your birthday Amberzade67 :D

I know what you mean. Do you realize how old people are who don't remember dial phones, film cameras, audio tapes, etc!!!!!

CarolJean ... that is kind of funny that you've been married longer than I've been alive. I often feel 'old' because I work with a lot of kids who don't know what DOS is or remember Windows 3.1.

Cosmicwatcher - Maybe you were joking when you asked - not sure but ...I don't know enough about physical science to completely understand why the world gets quieter because of winter and less light.

My experience has been different because even though I thought I was overweight as a teenager, I wasn't. Also, to my knowledge, no one has ever made fun of me, at least for being overweight, even though I was almost 300 pounds. Maybe they did and I never noticed.

I'm sorry that you had to go through all of that. Kids can be really cruel - I think because they are acting as their parents would but in a more savage way.

I believe this a thoughtful time of year because it is a time of waiting and quiet in nature as well. (Also I just realized you are slightly younger than my marriage (8/12/67.)
I think life is a series of ups and downs, but from the perspective of almost 69 years of life, it is an upward spiral. Instead of seeing any "downs" as negative, I realize it took some of the most challenging downs of my life (losing my Mom when I was only 33, losing my Dad 13 years later on my Mom's birthday, and finally succumbing to the real diagnosis of clinical depression) for me to make some of the most amazing and uplifting changes in my life.

why you think that the world gets quiter this time of year?

Haha, now that's a never-ending conversation you're opening :)

Personally, I've been obese since childhood, so weight(loss) is actually a part of me now, it has defined me greatly as a person... I was taught a lot of things that other people just don't need to be taught because they can trust their insticts and nature. Like, what does it feel like to be hungry and full.
Am I lazy because I am obese? Does obesity make me a less worthy person, since this much weight gain just can't be human, thus I am a beast/ less clever than everyone else? Why do I need food to cope with everything else? Does this mean my brain is chemically or genetically damaged? Why does it have to be food and not something else? Why did I have to be "addicted" to something anyway; I was a freaking kid! Other children were "normal". Which makes me an exception. Being the exception, was it bad or good for who I've come to be? I am a very kind and patient person and I feel a strong urge to help others. Is this because I was heavily mistreated due to my weight, so that I'd hate to cause someone to suffer because I know exactly how it feels? Or is it who I really am? If I was a slim kid, would I turn into a patient and kind adult who wants to help other people? If not, does this mean I had to go through all that trauma because otherwise I'd evolve into a terrible person? Is there reallly some kind of providence in this world, I mean? Or was it just a random fact?

Some of these questions I am able to answer. But because I know it'll take a long text, I'd hate to tire anyone. If someone wants me to elaborate, just ask and I will. :)

I'm doing a 21 days no binge streak. FOR ME, it's been TREMENDOUSLY helpful to be accountable to other people and to compete against myself. Please join us if you think it'll work for you too: www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_mes

The end of the year is approaching and I tend to get thoughtful at this time of the year for several reasons - some obvious.

1- It's the end of the year
2-My birthday is 12/31/67 so it's the beginning of a new year for me in more than one way.
3-The world seems quieter, even in Houston where it doesn't get real cold.

So .... I have been thinking...

If change such as weight loss, fitness, and getting healthy is a spiral, then what have I learned during each part of this spiral - the ups and the downs. I have things brewing in my head on the subject but I thought I'd throw the question out there.
