I don't know that I had a job specifically in mind, but I wanted to be a mom and I wanted to work in business.

Wow, for me I wanted to be two people because of the TV shows that I watched. Maybe three. I wanted to be a lawyer. I wanted to be the next Ms. Perry Manson, the famous lawyer that Spencer Tracy portended to be and Thurgood Marshall. This question really brought back some memories.

When I was a kid I wanted to travel and take photos of everything. In the meantime life happened and I have been busy......but I do take lots of photo. Camera in the phone camera in the table ....a small digitial camera in my tote and another digital on my coffee table. Always snapping. Even Miss Coco has learned to stop and pose when I grab the camera

Keep on track

Hands down a singer. I have done it off and on casually & even a few professional gigs, but never like I wanted to. I plan on making it happen in some form or fashion though in the near future. :)

All of this reminded me of my final wish as a job. The entire 20 years I taught I worked with at risk teens...kids who thought society saw no use for them and I worked hard at helping them create viable egos. I was getting a bit worn out and was trying to figure out how to stay in the h.s. area but without the intensity of the kids I was working with. I decided to be a school librarian. So in my early 50's I went back to university, earned my library certification and in the midst of that, middle of the summer, a job to start a library at an alternative school opened up and I got it. Still working with at risk teens, but doing lots of bibliotherapy.

I honestly had no idea. I told my mother when I was 3 that "I wanted to finish school, get married, and have children. But not necessarily in that order." I must have known. I had kids, then finished school (Graduated University), and then got married.

As for what I want to do professionally, I'm still deciding. I'm actually considering going ack to university for my MSW.

It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it GREAT

Be careful what you wish for! It's happened more in my life than I care to remember.

As a young teenager in the 60's I remember being in MACY'S and seeing a young stylish woman walking in and out of perhaps the tiniest office... maybe a converted closet on the selling floor and there was her desk, and her wall calendar with lots of penned in activites and X'd out dates. Somehow I knew that she was the events coordinator ... I'm sure that wasn't the job title in those days. I thought that must be a great job to coordinate events and do PR, I wanted a calendar like that and to coordinate presentations. That's not the path I took with a major in Sociology.. but to some extent that's a big portion of what I do now 50 years later! I'm an Asst Director of Admissions at a small college. My calendar, though now on Outlook and I cling to my Day Planner too ... is filled to overflowing with presentations, appointments and deadlines. I do presentations and plan social events for our department many times a year. I guess I did end up with the job I wished for as a teen! I am blessed because it is a perfect job for me. That was a fun realization.. thanks for asking the question.

Oh, I'm not talking about her dad! I'm talking about Ms. Stereotype.

I love your story.... I can just imagine the parent's reaction, but I love that the little girl heard those important words. You are a great soul.

I think it's wonderful! Teachers are the bedrock of any functional society.

A story: About fifteen years ago I worked at a winery (those were the days!). A guy from the accounting department brought his kids to visit, a little boy and girl barely out of toddlerhood. He told them, "When you both become accountants you can work here just like Daddy." Of course, the kids just gave him a blank stare.

One of the women in my department stooped down and said to the girl, "Don't listen to him, honey. You can be a teacher, or a nurse, or a mommy..."

Behind her I said, "Or a doctor, or an astronaut, or President." Boy, did that GET me a dirty look from my co-worker!

This is going to sound so gooey sweet.... all I ever wanted to be was a teacher. It took me until my early 40's to get my first full time teaching job, but the next 20 years were wonderful.
The down side to this is that when I was a girl in the 50's teaching and nursing were the two viable career options.

It depended what day you asked! Actress, musician, writer, fashion model, princess -- you name it!

QUESTION:

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

MY ANSWER:

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a writer. I must still be a kid.
