I think this all happens in steps-especially if you find you tend to be/think/speak a bit on the negative side. My first step was to stop and realize when I was thinking a negative thought (usually about ME, sometime about others) and changing it---one thing that I found helpful, when dealing with what I have always been told about myself "You are fat, you are not athletic, it is the family obesity gene, etc etc etc"---I started to say to myself, Well, they were simply wrong. I find it easy and light and it works!!
New thoughts include that I am worth the effort of taking care of ME, I am athletic, I am strong, I am a success-it goes on and on. Makes it all much more fun too!!!
Here's to us: We are all successes, some are simply in progress.....

Katie

Great post! I'm often positive but as many of us humans do, I fall into negativity traps too. When I remember kindness I'm more likely to release the negativity that I'm feeling towards others or myself. Kindness works as a cure to my negativity. " Kindness the Anti Negativity Cure"

I am a positive person, but recently I lost this positive position and I became physically sick and when I realized I was not being positive I had a long talk to myself and I totally improved

Keep on track

Thanks for sharing this, Val. I had no idea that 70% of my thoughts were negative! But it makes sense. I will be keeping track of my negativity this week and put a halt to it and see how that works out.

Have a great week!

Positive Self-Talk 101

"I am good enough. I am smart enough and doggone it, people like me."

Remember Stuart Smalley, the character on Saturday Night Live who did those positive affirmations in front of a mirror? It was a funny skitóbut he was actually onto something that works.

We all talk to ourselves every day, and most of the time what we say to ourselves isn't that nice. In fact, studies show we have tens of thousands of thoughts a day and 70% are negative! And we wonder why we feel defeated? Changing how you talk to yourself can be one of the most important things you can do for your health, your mood, and your body because the voice you let play inside your mind determines how you feel.

So each morning, remind yourself to pay attention to your thoughts. Are your thoughts positive? Negative? Depressing? Discouraging or empowering? If your internal dialogue is positive and you encounter a setback, you can talk yourself through it. You will automatically say things like: "I can do this. I have overcome challenges before. I know this is temporary. I will turn things around." Positive self-talk is comforting, empowering, and contributes greatly to ease of mind and happiness.

So how do you start? Practice saying, "STOP!" whenever you notice that your internal dialogue isn't positive. When you think a negative thought, replace it with a positive statement about yourself, written in the present tense. Here are a few examples:

I am strong.
I am confident.
I believe in me.

Tell yourself these things every day. You really can have control over your thoughts, and with some practice, you will be amazed at the results.
