SHADOZA - I checked in with the manufacturer about your posts and this is what they said:

The Spark tracker is not able to identify machine resistance and only measures intensity by the speed of the rotations (RPMs). So at 2 mph the tracker is going to identify the activity as light intensity cycling. That works out to a MET level of 2.5 which would be ~3 calories per minute for a 150 lb user. So 30 minutes of cycling would be somewhere around 90 or less calories burned.

Hope this helps to explain, but it probably would be best to use the recalibration process if they want to get closer to the machine's readings.

If I spend 30 minutes moving at an average of 2 mph, at resistance ranging from 1 to 8, I do believe I am burning more than 70 calories. If I use the elliptical setting from the fitness tracker recording a flat 30 minutes, (no resistance) I get somewhere around 235. Why does the tracker report less than this amount?

I will continue to reclassify because I calibrated my elliptical at base settings against the amount the fitness tracker returns and found the numbers to be within 1 calorie from one another.

My elliptical reports 50 rotations per minute on average. Not sure if that is considered one step per rotation or 2 steps per rotation. Pushing one foot platform from highest position to the lowest is half of a rotation. My average speed is 2 mph. The machine reports an average one 1 mile for an approximate 30 minute workout.

The tracker reports about 100 steps per minute when reclassified to elliptical. If each rotation is counted as two steps, does this not sound more accurate, then 72 calories? I do not recall how many steps the cycle reports. Sometimes the tracker will report a general activity when I am using the elliptical. The difference depends on which resistance levels I use.

SHADOZA - The tracker does recognize an elliptical workout as a cycle event because it is so close to the same motion as cycling. So if you want it listed as an elliptical workout, you will need to reclassify it, however the numbers for that workout may change when you reclassify it because when you reclassify a workout, it takes the length of the workout and multiplies it by the pre-categorized amount of "steps per minute" for the activity type selected. The steps per minute value is derived from the Surgeon Generalís published figures for Steps per Minute of various activities. As this reclassification is more of an estimate, we wouldn't recommend reclassifying measured events as reclassified activity as it will likely result in less accurate results. The Spark tracked event will yield more accurate walking results than using the walking reclassification function. However, if you find that the reclassification is a better picture of what you are actually doing, there is nothing wrong with reclassifying the workout event for that.

My tracker only records 75 calories for 30 minutes at level 5 on my elliptical. I have to reclassify it because it calls it a cycle event...sometimes it even calls it a general event.

there does not appear to be any damage inside, the metal post is on top of the battery. it has not synced since 9pm last night. it gave me 2900 steps for the whole day [although I walked the dog for 3 miles etc] Tuesday did a 75 minute zumba class and it gave me 304 steps. never know when it is working or not

The last post from you on that thread said it was working properly, so we wouldn't know that you were still having issues without posting an update about it and wouldn't replace a properly working tracker. I responded to all your posts in that thread except for that very last one that said it was now working. That said, will you please open your tracker to see if there is any damage inside? Also, please check to see if the metal tab is laying on top of the battery or if it is flat. Then please let me know what you find.

Gosh! Its sad to hear the disgruntlement... I love my Activity Tracker! It has motivated me to do more than I thought I was capable of doing at my age.

In my previous career before retirement I was a Systems/Network Administrator. I know that sometimes technology can be frustrating... but most of the time its something going on with the computer. We used to have a 'in house joke' it was the connection between the chair and the keyboard, but I know this is not your situation. (This was just a joke!)

I've had one incident where the computer didn't see the dongle. I just rebooted my computer and all was fine again. I have an old computer with an old operating system so most of any of my problems I would find fault with my computer first. Another time I thought I lost my SPAT but it had fallen off in the house. (Shew) I had it clipped on incorrectly.

I have a suggestion if you haven't already tried or done so; have you tried uninstalling the software, reboot, and re-install? Did you install a new software download after replacing each SPAT? I may be 'all wet' in these simple suggestions. Only the Tech's with SparkPeople can tell you for certain what to do and how to do it.

Good Luck! I'm sorry you are not happy.

I slip the clip tab through the shoestring loop that is attached to the tongue of the tennis shoe. After testing it at the instep, facing the toes against the sideways mount, there was no differences in the number of steps or time recorded from movement. I feel that since the SPAT is sideways, the device flops less and does not get pushed by bending my feet which helps to prevent it from sliding off or breaking from the pressing of the foot. Just a thought.

As shadoza says every time I power up my computer the syncpoint glows red and I get the communication error until the internet connection is established. The first couple of times I got the red light on syncpoint, i went to the syncpoint page and refreshed the connection. But now I just wait a minute or two and it turns green by itself. Thankfully I have a laptop and which sleeps instead of powers off so I only have this issue a couple times a week.

I think whatever problem you have with the tracker is separate from this which is just normal start up.

For the person who has lost trackers. There are some great suggestions for back up attachments on a thread in the general discussion forum. I can't see it as I write this but the thread has "lost" or "losing" in the name. I slip a safety pin or paper clip onto the spats clip and attach a string to that and attach the string to another safety pin and pin that to my clothes or socks or whatever as well as attaching with the spat's own clip. If the spat comes loose the string catches it and I feel it dangling and investigate. I have always done this even with cheap pedometers because I just don't like the hassle regardless of the cost.

My tracker always reports a com. error when I start the computer in the morning. The internet has to be completely up in my computer system and I also give it about 10 minutes to sync up and be ready to receive.

As a thought...it might be that even though your network icon says that the internet is live, there still might be processes loading in the background that the tracker program needs before it can run.

This is my third go around with Spark Activity Tracker. I didn't replace the battery properly. The technique is documented but still not easily applied. I replaced the battery properly on the second monitor but lost it.

I paid full price for 2 and got a discount on the 3rd.

I love the device, but can't afford to keep replacing it.

DAISYPETAL - That's great! What a nice friend!!

In regards to the issue PJB is having, it appears to be a computer issue, not a device issue, so exchanging it/sending it in wouldn't do anything if their computer is having trouble with the software/the software isn't consistently running.

Denise, thank you and to let you know, a very good friend gave me hers. She said she didn't use it as it should be used and it would get lost if she didn't find a home for it. So I am back again.

I do hope that the company is working on a way to attach it better so it works. I can put it in my pocket but it does not register correctly.

PJB, It sounds so frustrating to be going through this with the Sparker. Denise, why couldn't you have her send it back to you for checking? It seems only fair when they cost so much and we look so forward to using it. It seems very possible that it could be a lemon. To tell someone that it is the way they are doing something that makes it not work, does not make a happy lady.

As for anyone else's information, I feel that I will probably go with the fitbit if this sparker breaks or gets lost. They have excellent customer service and great return policy.

PJB149 - I checked in with the manufacturer about what you are experiencing and below is what they said.

It sounds like the connection error that they see on Startup is likely a delay with how quickly their internet connection is being established. That would happen if the SparkPeople Connect program finishes loading before their network connection is ready. However, that shouldn't cause any long term problems as long as they click the "refresh" and the error goes away.
The best bet to improve the performance would be to suggest that they keep the SyncPoint/SparkPeople Connect software running more often so that the Spark syncs whenever they are nearby. This way the data will already be in their account when they go to check their progress (instead of sitting down, starting the computer, and then waiting for the connection to establish).

I loved my tracker and used it at all waking times. The problem is that my first one was lost from my shoe sometime when I was wearing it. I know there is that chance and I was always careful to check during the day to make sure it was there. But we get confident and forget to look as it becomes part of the body.

Well I ordered another one from SP and have had it and used it faithfully but again, it has been lost in transit somewhere.

I will NOT be ordering another on as it is just too expensive to keep replacing. I am sad that something this expensive cannot attach better. I know this is my fault for not being more careful but I even rolled it in my sock at times or attached it to my jeans pocket but it did not seem to register correctly.

So if anyone reads this post and you own a sparker, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE CAREFUL WITH IT OR IT WILL BE GONE. I AM SO DISSAPOINTED AS IT IS SUCH AN INCENTIVE TO MOVE.

This has been ongoing since I received this thing on 10/19. Four out of 5 times it reads a communication error whenever I turn on my computer. The box is red and indicates "communication error your spark tracker is not synced to your computer." I click on the app and go to the screen it says "refresh your internet connection." I do this it turns green but still does not register on Spark.com.

I put in a battery in October, at your suggestion. I didn't even use the extra one provided but went out and purchased a new battery. It is now down to also half of the battery life being used. I am not having any other "communication" problems with my internet. I really think this thing is just a dud and I am fed up with trying to get it to work properly.

Also when I signed on to the site it has now updated to 11/29 at 7:30 pm. Progress? Yes it is in total green status.

Sorry you're having so much trouble! It sounds like the issue is more with what is happening on your computer. What exactly does the error message say? Is your SparkPeople Connect software running? Does your SyncPoint (the piece that is plugged into your computer) have a green light?

I had my first tracker for 10 months then I lost it off my shoe. No problem or so I thought, I purchased a new one, on sale - good deal or so I thought.

This "new" tracker has not worked right since week one. I wrote for advice and was told to change the battery. Okay. It was only a week old but what the heck. I purchase and installed a new battery. This 'new' tracker just doesn't work properly. Every time I turn on my computer it tells me I have a communication error and to reconnect the tracker. I check the status an everything is green. However, it doesn't sync. It will sync every few days and play catch up. For instance, it is all green, but has not tracked since 11/29 at 7 a.m.

I am ready to send this thing back and just forget about it.

What do I do next?
