I like the idea of the hiking in the Pack once a month regardless of the weather. In our area there are so many places to explore by hiking and in various ability level. My best friend Google easily puts maps in my hands via the net. We even have a local store that does 'Passport to Wellness' booklets where one can do a scrubbing with a pen, crayon or marker of a sign to complete a journey. That helps distract a bit on length and keep scouts interested.

Thanks for the invite! We live in WV so it would be quite a hike to get there. emoticon

We are opting to do the hiking stick at 25 miles. The WV State Parks have an award based hiking program that we will be working with as well. I'm also going to look for hiking equipment donations from the local sports/adventure stores. The Army has already supplied water bottles and a local Shoney's restaurant asked to give some support too.

The hiking club became a local hit really quickly!

We implemented this in our Pack this year. It's been a big hit with the scouts and the parents. I happen to be in Three Fires Council but we modified the program a little. We use the patches but we give the hiking stick much earlier at 15 miles hiked, and we only have hikes every other month or so.

If you're interested in the trails we've hiked around the area shoot me a sparkmail and we'll talk!

Where in Ill. I go there for skating competitions a lot.

What a great idea with the walking stick and medallions.

Of course with scouting there are patches and other awards. The Three Fires Council in Illinois where I reviewed the idea gives a patch every 10 miles. At 50 the boys get a walking stick and earn stick embellishments every ten miles there after. Pretty good motivation.

That sounds like a great activity. A lot of troops don't even do a monthly activity and to have it where you can have others is great!!!

I just started a hiking club in my cub scout Pack. The idea is we hike once a month (rain or shine) in various places in our part of the state.

There is so much interest in this that the Girl Scouts are calling to join, other Packs in my district are going to join us, and I am even getting offers for corporate sponsorship. I am willing to discuss this with anyone interested in starting one for your Pack/Troop but I went here for my inspiration:

Of course, I had personal fringe health benefits in mind. :)
