Good morning from VIrginia and I am feeling great because the scale says I am down a half pound. I know that isn't much but as stubborn as this pound is too lose I will take it. I will try my new resistance bands today! They arrived late yesterday so that should help. I will still get my cardio burn. I actually enjoy it. I'll check the pool water to see if it is warm enough. We have had a cool start to the summer. Also it needs soda ash big time and I have to pick up some today. Thanks for the heads up about that Costco blend. Sounds great & I'll try it.
Glad to hear everyone's on track. Just keep eating healthy and going for your burn each day! I am so encouraged by you Marlis and I admire your determination and perseverance.

Warmest wishes from VA,
Sheila emoticon

Terrific, Terri!!!
You might eat more food, but denser food that for the quantity has less calories.. Even if is more food, I decided, now, to stop eating when I feel satisfied.
I guess they don't heat your pools? Ours are heated, less so when the heat hits us.

I will be working out with my trainer this morning. I hope she will be a little gentler with me than last Monday. NOT!

More later....

Good morning everyone,
After starting this new way of eating I have been wondering how in the world can I lose weight eating all this food. It is way more than I usually eat and the scale hasn't moved much in over 3 months.
This morning I got on the scale and saw a number I haven't seen in years. I've lost 2.3 lbs. so far this week. I had to weigh my self again to see if it was real...
That was all the motivation I needed to keep going.
Marlis, great job on swimming the laps. I love to swim but they just filled the 2 pools up that I swim in about a week ago and it hasn't been that warm here. Hopefully next week I can go and the water won't be too cold. I go to the adult swim when there aren't any kids around and swim laps.
I'm getting ready to start my day. I'll report back this evening. emoticon emoticon

I want to tell you about another discovery, today. Again at Costco.

It's called: Organic Brown Rice & Quinoa with Lentils.
It's made by SUKHIS, and is a great side dish.

They suggest a serving size of 6 oz. When I measured it, I realized right away that that was too much, and decided on 3 oz. each. It needs a little spicing up, or some fresh herbs would be great. It warms up in the microwave oven in 2 minutes. I only mention this, because many of you are as busy, as am I.
With this side dish we had some fresh, grilled Halibut. It was so good. Again, we have some leftover fish and will have it for lunch, tomorrow, on top of a large salad.

Enough talk about food.

I opened my own swim season today and went to the pool and swam 40 laps. I feel it in my back, my shoulders, and my arms and should be able to sleep well, tonight.

Good Night, All.

Marlis

Amy, this is what I put into my smoothie, although it changes periodically.
*I use 30 Cal. Almond Milk (unsweetened), about 1 cup

*Add 1/2 cup of 1% Kefir for some protein, (a yogurt drink, but you can use yogurt)

*1 cup of frozen mixed berries (I buy mine at Costco and they are organic)

*2 cups of Kale (again, Costco carries organic, prewashed, baby-Kale, which I use for soups and smoothies).

* 1/2 Banana

* 1 scoop of Protein Powder. I have some Arbonne PP left, but also use one from Trader Joe's

* 1 tsp. of almond butter (you can make that P-nut butter, or use 1 tsp. or tbsp. of Flax Oil, or 1/3 of a ripe avocado). This is to get some healthy fat.

Mix all in a blender and enjoy. Somebody suggested to blend the milk and Kefir with just 1/2 of the berries first, because the rest will blend easier, then.

The frozen berries and banana make it a thick smoothie, and cover up any other taste. If you find it too thick, you can always add a little bit more Almond milk. Sometimes, I only use frozen blueberries. You can also use frozen cherries, or strawberries, but, as you know blueberries are very good for you.

Often, I am not hungry enough to drink it all, so I will refrigerate the rest and use it as a 'snack'. (Today, I drank it all, because I was sooooo hungry)

My daughter-in-law doesn't like vegetables, but when I went to visit my son and family, recently, and they never have time for breakfast in the morning, I made them that smoothie. They both loved it, and then their three-year old daughter begged for some, too.

Hope that will inspire you.

I tried the Panko fish tonight and loved it! This is a miracle considering I am not much of a fish eater! I don't like cooked tomatoes so I eliminated that and had extra squash. Now, I'm an eater (obviously, it's why I am here!) so I am finding that there are certain times of the day when I am hungry! The best day for that was Light Caesar Salad day. I was satiated all day!
I am going to have to substitute my snacks tomorrow. Can't really have a beer in the afternoon since I will be at work, although, it might make work interesting, haha!

I liked the breakfast cookie although I didn't use peanut butter so that may have made it a different creature than if I followed the recipe exactly. I love fish so really liked the fish dinner.

I like most of the recipes but will make next week even simpler by not trying to buy all the ingredients for week 2 since trying to juggle produce so it doesn't spoil, is kind of hard. I'll still eat a variety of veggies and fruits but not buy all the variety at one time.

I'm getting hang of this. I'm not used to cooking this much at all so I'll get better as I go.

Marlis, I would love that smoothie recipe. I'm really looking for a quick way to get more fruits and veggies into my diet. I love that the recipes in the book are doing this, but I'm finding I'm spending all my time in the kitchen. My husband's the cook in our house and I'm finding it taking me at least 3x as long to create the recipes in the book and then I still have to clean up. I'm getting burned out quickly. The Panko fish was pretty tasty though and I also liked the take on Oatmeal from earlier in the week. I agree with many of you that this is too much food- I've been dropping one or two of the snacks every day which works because I'm only 5'1 and I was supposed to drop some of those calories anyway.

Today was awesome! emoticon

I had a lunch meeting I was worried about, but ended up splitting a meal with the person I was meeting, so that kept me in the right calorie range. Then I was in the archives all afternoon for work, another thing I was worried about, but I packed healthy snacks and so avoided the vending machines. I also walked to the library, which gave me 80 minutes of cardio round-trip.

Starting right after my evening snack, I need to start fasting for some routine blood work I'm having done tomorrow. Skipping meals makes me really anxious, so wish me luck!

Sheila, I just put my weight in to see where I am going. So and so often, I eliminate a bunch of them, like this week, because my posts get too long. This is how I realized, also this week, that I have been floating around between 167# and 172# for a long time now. I joined this group, because the SS book gives us a more restricted plan, and I would like to lose a few more pounds. My goal, initially, was actually 155#. I belong to two other groups, one for the longest time, and we know each other really well, some of them personally, the other is the 5% Challenge, that has probably over 600 people in it, but we are all divided into teams and compete with each other. This team requires that you show the region you live in, because they have some strict rules, and we live in different time zones. BTW, I live in Reno, NV after having lived over 30 years in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The numbers (in my case, my weight) you can insert by clicking on the "Edit my Spark Page", at the upper right hand corner of your Spark Page. Then scroll down and you will find "Personal Signature". There you can insert your name, a quote, where you live, or even a record of your weight loss. Whatever you desire. After that, return to the top of the right-hand corner and click on "Save Changes".

Terry, now I wonder if I will ever make those Oatmeal Cookies. Based on the different opinions, I might just try them this weekend and see if I can improve the taste a bit, without adding any significant amount of calories to it.
Thanks for sharing your experience.

We were out all morning, and I almost crashed because I was so hungry. Because of it, once home, I made a smoothie. For those who don't like vegetables, you should really try this. I include two big handfuls of Kale to it, which you just can't taste, because I also include 1 cup of frozen berries, a 1/2 banana and more. If any one is interested, I will list the rest of the ingredients, which vary from time to time. This is my own recipe and I can have it ready in 3- 4 minutes. It's tasty and healthy.

So far so good for me.

I picked this up to push past a plateau, and it REALLY made a HUGE difference. I'm actually a little sore for the first time (from exercise) than I have been in awhile. Despite having increased intensity, I had dropped strength training for scheduling...but increased the length of the dog walking, which really was just adding EXTRA cardio. The weather has been crummy, so I had been "making up" those walks on the treadmill. Now that I'm back on - and with a better variety than what I had been doing (there was some...) I've already dropped two pounds.

As for eating, I'm mixed. I have added more fruits and veggies, but I'm SO picky - not just on WHAT the fruit/veggie is but also its CONDITION. (For example, I rarely eat bananas, as they have to be completely spot free. And I hate melons of any kind.) For the most part, I had been over-relying on ready to eat meals, and I've had trouble with choices since Easter. Up to that point, I had been balancing my "regular" recipes with those already in Spark Recipes and only eating frozen when I had long nights at the auditorium or school.

I didn't get food to make something different every night. I cook for two, and my husband isn't necessarily into it...and he has the oddest eating schedule. I have relied on leftovers quite a bit, and I haven't really done the breakfasts or snacks as listed.

I've been doing the workouts in the AM (now that school's out), but I don't eat before I go, because it'll upset my stomach. When I get home, I'm not that hungry any more. I haven't really done the lunches, either, but I do choose more carefully/wisely what I eat. Snacks, I either go without, or just have an apple or something. Most of what is in the book doesn't appeal to me.

For the dinners, I thought the enchiladas were OK, but VERY dry - decent flavor, though. I was really looking forward to the panko fish with tomato salad. However....I had forgotten that I learned last week that frying fish is not a skill I possess. I'm a miracle: raw on the inside, burnt on the outside. With more skilled hands, this would've been good (and with a bit more salt). I did add one tablespoon of lowfat mozzarella to the tomatoes - that was pretty good.

I am finding that this is too much food also. I usually eat about 1200 calories a day. I have been dropping a few of the items each day, which the books actually says to do if you are over 50 or some such thing. I had a sick dog that kept me up all night and then I had a migraine today so I haven't gotten in any exercise, but hopefully I will be up to exercising tomorrow.

I don't weigh everyday. I am doing several challenges and weigh in on Saturdays and Wednesdays for them so I will go with my Saturday weight for this team since we started on a Monday.

Here's my vote for the cookie, Marlis emoticon
They smelled real good when I was baking them.
It wasn't so bad I couldn't eat it, I ate all of it. There just wasn't any flavor to it. It sure filled me up though, that's one good point and it has a lot of healthy things in it. Am I going to make them again? No.
I made the Sweet Miso Chicken for lunch minus the miso. There are only 2 grocery stores where I live and neither of them had any. I added extra garlic and hot pepper flakes to it. There sure was a lot there and I ate all of it also.
I'm still full and was going to make the fish tonight but I don't think I can eat another big meal.
I'll have to check my calorie intake and maybe just have a smoothie tonight.
I'm not use to eating so much food! I am usually under my calorie range. I'm trying to bring it up a little and maybe I'll start losing weight again.
Did my exercises at 5:45 this morning. It's been a good day so far!
I hope every one else is having a good day as well. emoticon

Sheila, when you are talking about "putting the weight stats on the screen" are you talking about the ticker? You have a choice whether you want to put minutes that you worked out, or your weight, or minutes on that ticker. I looks like you opted for the amount of pounds lost. Let me know exactly what you mean and what you want to accomplish and I will try to help you.

I had a gluten free version of the Breakfast cookie today and while it wasn't awful I would add some xylitol or stevia to add a little more sweetness if I make them again. I made a loaf of gluten free Banana Bread also, but have not tried it. It is probably slated for next week, but I had bananas that needed to be used so I will freeze it and have it next week.

Hey guys,

Just checking in -- read through The Spark Solution last night. I am eating on the plan but making substitutions as I am super gluten intolerant. So I am with you but with quite a few modifications as there is a lot of whole wheat in the diet -- I will not cheat on the calories involved and stay within the diet guidelines for fats, carbs, and protein. That said, I am really excited and committed to making this journey successful.

I will be doing some catch up today. I have been doing about 45 min. each day on my treadmill (yawn) Watching the stock market livens it up for me as I am taking up trading as a retirement type activity. So my big change for the day is to do strength training. Fear and trembling! I will just have to do what I can as I am starting with zero with this aspect, but I am also looking forward to it as I hate the flabbier parts of my body. So here goes and I promise to check in with how that went!

So, how do we put our weight, stats, etc. on the sign in screen? I'll also mess around with my spark page and see if I can figure that out as well. Back at you later and make it a great day in body, mind and spirit!

Sheila emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hello, Everyone! Sounds like we are making progress. I cannot believe the amount of energy I have just in 4 days of SS! It is almost overwhelming! My only complaint is that it is HUGELY time consuming. I have prepared as much as I can ahead of time, but I am still preparing dinner, snack, breakfast, lunch, and snack for the next day and working out. I am done with everything around 1015 at night. The pace is challenging after putting in a full day's work. I am determined to do it, though and have been and am already reaping the benefits. There is only one recipe thus far that I haven't liked and that is the breakfast cookie...ick! (No offense to anyone, emoticon ). I have loved everything else, and am excited to have new recipes in my arsenal! Anyway, short update...lunch break is over! Have a great day!

I'm very impressed at how the meals have been keeping me full. That's an accomplishment!!

I had the chicken caesar salad for lunch and thought it was great--very garlicky, but I like garlic. Last night we made the orange-miso chicken and veggies, but used tofu instead of chicken. It was pleasant tasting, but we're used to stronger flavor, so I added a dash of rooster sauce.

Between my first day of strength training and aerobics the next day, my glutes and thighs were pretty sore yesterday, so I focused on my arms during strength training.

Feeling great and looking forward to seeing what today holds!! I have a lunch meeting today, so wish me luck.

Based on food I needed to use, I had the egg and spinach wrap but cooked green peppers and tomatoes with the eggs and then put fresh spinach leaves in my wrap. The rest of the meals went well too. I really like how I'm getting into the habit of wanting veggies in everything (except my fruity things).

My husband and I went for a 6 mile hike and I incorporated the cardio during the first of the walk.

Welcome everyone who is just starting!
This was a good day for me.
Started off with the oatmeal again and had a hamburger (without the onion because I had to go to the dentist) I also had a baked potato and green beans. Ive made the garlic-herb potatoes before and I really liked them.
This evening I had the enchiladas left over from the other day. They were a little dry this time around maybe because I froze them.
I didn't eat in front of the T.V or computer, I never do anyway so that wasn't hard for me.
I just finished making the breakfast cookies for tomorrow. I doubled the recipe though and made 4 cookies They smell good... I find out in the morning if they taste good.

I made the Southwestern Chicken and Rice for dinner tonight and it was nice and easy. It was a little bland for my taste since I used mild salsa. Next time I will use spicier salsa or add a jalapeno, but otherwise a nice one pan meal.

Sheila, there is no reason why you can't join us. Welcome, aboard.

STILLFLYIN, CHERIJ16 & BURNHAM, if you can't find a later group, come and join us. Start interacting and get a feel for what we are doing. Looking forward to seeing your posts.

Well, I am still at 166#, that is three days in a row, and it means to me that I am settling in at a new weight. Now, I have to be careful and keep working on all Spark Solution has to offer, and, of course, I need your help and encouragement.

I fixed the 'Breakfast Casserole Cups' this morning. The only change I made (due to lack of time) is not putting the mixture into a muffin pan and then into the oven for 20 min.. Mine looked more like a pancake, when I was done. I put the grated potatoes into a frying pan, put a lid on, and let it 'fry' for a few minutes, followed by mixing the remaining ingredients and added them on top of the potatoes to cook. It was quite good and didn't change anything calorie wise. Sometimes, we have to make changes to suit our lifestyle.

Lunch was another problem. I worked out with my trainer this morning, and then went to play golf with my husband. (Did I mention, I am retired?) We didn't finish until 2:15 PM, sort of late for lunch, again. We went home, and I made a big salad, because we are going out to dinner at the golf club, tonight. Wednesdays, they serve a buffet. We went last week, and I loaded up on salads, fruit and vegetables. Whenever, they don't have their light citrus dressing that will be brought to me in a separate dish, I just ask them to bring me some Balsamic vinegar, and use that instead.

We have choices, Ladies! Use them, whenever possible.

Started on the 27th of May. I have finished reading the beginning and have done the best to stay within the menu guide lines.

I have never been a big fruit and vegetable eater. But I am trying new fruit and vegetables and at least eating more than I have eaten in the past.

I have also added more whole grain to my diet.

I am enjoying the helpful suggestions in the Spark Solution.

I hope there will be more groups forming later. I got sick and still am not well enough. It's just more fun as part of a group.

Hi Lady's, I would also like to be a part of this group though I am not starting until Sunday June 2nd. This week is a mess and I have a horse show on Saturday so will be unable to do the program. Felt starting Sunday would be the best option. Love the way you lady's are sticking together and helping each other. Even though you will be ahead of me I feel I can fit in.

My starting weight: 166.

The same weight again this morning. That is the lowest I have been in a while.
My day wasn't stellar food wise, either. Breakfast was ok, but then I played golf and I looked at the buffet at the club and knew that that was not what the Spark Solution had in mind. I went home and had lunch at 2:15 PM, way too late, when not eating anything between 7:00 AM and 2:15 PM. I had a cup of vegetable soup left over, and a little bit of my Muesli (breakfast) from this morning. When I was ready to prepare dinner, dh indicated he is not hungry. He had 6 ribs (left over from Memorial weekend) for lunch and had been nibbling on cheese. Let me add, that he has no weight problem. Well, I was not about to fix the pork fillet just for myself. I ended up making a smoothie with Almond Milk, Kefir, Kale, frozen Blueberries, 1 tsp. of Almond butter, a scoop of protein powder and ground Flax Seed. I feel I made too much of it, so need to cut back, tomorrow.

I am using my round of golf as my exercise, as I walk most of the course. I will do strength training with my trainer, tomorrow morning. After that, I will join dh and two of his friends for another round of golf, but skip Thursday.

Keep pushing, ladies.

Day 2 didn't go very well eating wise for me because I was out of town for the day. I did make the oatmeal with almonds for breakfast and did my exercises. I also got in10,544 steps so far today.
MaryAnn,my husband didn't like the cilantro either. That didn't keep him from eating 3 of the enchiladas though! I love cilantro and always put it on my sliced tomatoes.

SFERENTI for the pan fried chicken, I used all purpose gluten free flour and gluten free panko bread crumbs. I don't know where you live, but the Giant food store here carries them. I usually just eat the breakfasts without the wraps, but you can get gluten free wraps. I'll let you know what else I encounter.

Enjoyed the oatmeal. For dinner I had leftovers of yesterday's chicken meal. Did the strength training exercises from the book. emoticon

Leslie2561, I'm following the plan with my partner, who is gluten-intolerant, so I'm grateful for your input on what recipes can be modified for a gluten-free diet. (She's also lactose-intolerant, in case anyone else is modifying that way.)

She's out tonight, so I made the berry cobbler cup for myself and loved it. It's going to be one of my easy go-to desserts, I'm sure! (My other favorite is melting a few chocolate chips and a dash of milk in the microwave, then dipping fruit into it)

Keep up the good work everyone!

Woo! I am happy to report that I have successfully completed day 2! My only flaw was not doing the strength exercises. I didn't get home until 6:00, then I had to cook dinner, then prepare everything for tomorrow's breakfast, lunch and snacks for two! I kind of cut corners on dinner tonight--not in a bad way, I hope! Last night's recipe made so much, we went ahead and ate it again tonight since the recipe was so similar to the enchiladas. I am hoping this gets a bit easier and less time consuming. Even though it is only day two, I feel great pride in my efforts!

I am in group 2 but on day 9. we started a week after the Spark solution kick off. Still doing ok on the plan. I find myself watching what I am eating more (when I grab something off plan).
Love the recipes even though they do take some time to prepare.
my favorite has to be the breakfast cookie. Could not believe how good it was and how it kept me full all morning.

Mary Ann, it's always good to get some feedback on the recipes. I am not very enthusiastic about Mexican food, but won't mind trying a 'healthy' version. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I hope you all weighed in yesterday, and marked your weight somewhere, so you can see your weekly progress and share it with us. I belong to another group, and we post our weekly weight every Monday, on top of the page. Just something to think about.

Keep on sharing your frustrations and celebrations with us, so we can all learn from it.

Thanks.

I'm on day three today, and so far I have followed the Spark Solution: I have enjoyed all the meals so far. The Dinners have really got my family talking. Last night we had the Quick Chicken enchilada's and they loved it, but thought the cilantro was over powering the dish! I thought it was fine! So next time I just decrease the amount of cilantro. This morning the Breakfast Wrap was delicious, the Feta Cheese really made the dish, and truly I love the Caesar Salad was yummy for lunch. So the first three days (since I started on Sunday) have been really good. I haven't been craving other foods at all.

Yay - good to know I'm not the only one starting a bit late!

I usually really struggle with meal plans, but I like the fact that this one is easily sustainable. I have switched things around a bit according to my tastes, but otherwise I am really liking it. My biggest challenge has always been getting enough protein and a little less fat/carbohydrates. This is helping me do that! And I don't feel deprived one bit - I don't think I have ever been able to say that about any other meal plan!

I am on day 2, but eating out of order to accommodate busy days. I am not a big pancake person, but the protein pancakes were very good. I used gluten free flour and a little xanthan gum instead of the whole wheat and I put about half of the blueberries in the pancakes.

My husband liked the berry cobbler cup last night, but mine was a little rubbery, so maybe it is better with regular flour than with gluten free flour.

I am starting this with my wellness coaches at my doctors office. They are going to help keep me on track. We are going to use the fitness plan when I am at the doctor's as well as when I am home. The food plan has to wait a couple of weeks until I get money for food so I can buy the food. I am trying to at least stay within the calories and nutrients. I will have to modify the food plan because $200 has to last the full month. There will probably have to be a lot of repeats.

I started Saturday as well. (Good to have a couple people ahead to give a heads up. LOL). Ceasear Salad for lunch was tasty. I feel like it is easy to stay on track because I don't get hungry. Yesterday went for a 6 mile bike ride with the family. 3 miles to vet ice cream and 3 miles back and guess who didn't eat a single bite of ice cream!

Thank you also for the team to join!!! We can ROCK this! GO 5/27!!

I'm also enjoying the structure of the plan, which I started Sunday.

I was surprised how challenging I found the strength exercises, since I'm relatively fit already. I got through an entire set, and am looking forward to working up to the recommended two sets.

Good morning. I'm doing great. I started Saturday instead of Monday so I am a little ahead. I've eaten more veggies in the past few days. Who would have thought I'd have black beans or spinach for breakfast, but I did. It's going well. I do have some times of hunger but nothing terrible. Doing the strength exercises are a challenge for me but I'm getting the aerobic in. Needed something at grocery store today and I walked there and back. 1.5 miles. Go team.
