Weight Watchers SmartPoints For Fast Food
By: Alex Lenhoff

Everyone loves Oprah's favorite things, and in 2015, Oprah found a new favorite: Weight Watchers. Last fall, America's favorite media mogul purchased a 10% share of the point-based diet plan company and went to work helping them improve their product. In the last few weeks, we've seen the fruits of those labors in the form of a new ad campaign starring Oprah herself, and a complete overhaul of Weight Watcher's point system. The old point system, dubbed PointsPlus, was just replaced with a brand new system called SmartPoints.

For a number of years, FastFoodNutrition.org has helped those on Weight Watchers by displaying the PointsPlus values for every fast food menu item in our database. We are proud to announce that we are now displaying the new Weight Watchers SmartPoints values as well.

SmartPoints are calculated a bit differently than the old PointsPlus. SmartPoints has a greater emphasis on avoiding sugar and saturated fat, where as the old PointsPlus system emphasized avoiding carbohydrates and total fat. This means that the point value for nearly every menu item in our database has changed.

If you're a Weight Watchers user who isn't on board with the new SmartPoints system, never fear: we still display the PointsPlus values.

To view the Weight Watchers SmartPoints or PointsPlus values for any fast food restaurant, simply select a restaurant and then select the Weight Watchers tab. You will be presented with both the SmartPoints and the PointsPlus for every item on that restaurant's menu. It couldn't be easier!

Survive Lent With These Meat-less Fast Food Options
By: Alex Lenhoff

Ash Wednesday comes with it comes the start of Lent. For Catholics, that means 40 days of self-reflection, prayer, and abstaining from meat on Fridays. Now before you get all depressed thinking of all the Filet-O-Fishes you'll be eating on Fridays, let me share some good news: THERE IS A BETTER WAY! That's right, you no longer have to suffer through greasy, fried fish sandwiches slathered in tartar sauce to make it through Lent!

In the last few years, fast food restaurants have upped their game when it comes to vegetarian and seafood options, making it easier than ever for you to observe Lent without giving up the convenience of fast food. These new meat-less menu options go beyond the traditional fried fish sandwich, giving Catholics Lent-friendly options that are tastier than ever.

Below is a list of meat-free fast food options that can make this your tastiest Lent yet!

Taco John's Fish Tacos
These soft shell tacos feature wild-caught whitefish filets and are topped with lettuce, zesty fajita sour cream and fresh lime.

Panera Mediterranean Veggie Sandwich
This is a vegetarian sandwich that won't make you miss meat! It features zesty sweet Peppadew piquant peppers, feta cheese, cucumbers, lettuce, vine-ripened tomatoes, red onions and cilantro jalapeño hummus on freshly baked Tomato Basil Bread.

Smashburger Spicy Baja Black Bean Burger
This meat-less burger won't trick your taste buds into thinking you just bit into a hunk of beef, but it doesn't have to; this black bean burger is delicious in its own right. The Spicy Baja Black Bean Burger features avocado, freshly sliced jalapeno peppers and a dab of spicy chipotle mayo.

Hardee's and Carl's Jr Redhook Beer-Battered Cod Fish Sandwich
I know, I know, these are supposed to be options that are better than your traditional fried fish sandwich, but this fried fish sandwich IS better. Why? Because the fresh cod filets are cooked in a batter featuring delicious Redhook beer from Seattle! At Hardee's the sandwich comes topped with a slice of American cheese, while at Carl's Jr it is topped with lettuce and tomato.

Jimmy Johns Club Tuna
A housemade tuna salad, topped with provolone cheese, cucumber, tomatoes and lettuce, served up on Jimmy John's signature white bread.

Chipotle Sofritas Burrito
You can still have all the goodness of a Chipotle burrito without the meat. Just choose the Sofritas, a meat-less soy option. Think soy doesn't taste like anything? Think again. This soy is braised chipotle chilis, roasted poblanos, and a blend of aromatic spices. Sofritas is also available in burrito bowls and tacos.

Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino Calories and Weight Watchers Points By: Alex Lenhoff

Tired of your boring, plain Frappuccino? Starbucks thinks you are. That's why for the next five days, the coffee giant will be selling a color and flavor-changing Frappuccino Crème drink, inspired by unicorns. This limited time only beverage is neon-colored, layered with different flavors and goes great with all of your favorite Lisa Frank products.

Here's what Starbucks has to say about the Unicorn Frappuccino: "Like its mythical namesake, the Unicorn Frappuccino blended crème comes with a bit of magic, starting as a purple beverage with swirls of blue and a first taste that is sweet and fruity, but give it a stir and its color changes to pink, and the flavor evolves to tangy and tart. The more swirl, the more the beverage’s color and flavors transform."

The Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino gets its crazy colors and flavors from a pink powder that is blended into the Frappuccino, mango syrup and drizzle of sour blue syrup. While the creature that inspired this drink is mythical, the calories are definitely real. So what's does a Unicorn Frappuccino look like from a calories perspective? Like anything at Starbucks, that all depends on how you order.

Like all Frappuccinos, the Unicorn Frappuccino comes in a variety of sizes with your choice of milk and optional whipped cream topping. These choices provide a HUGE range of nutritional options. For example, if you order a Tall (12 oz) Unicorn Frauppuccino with nonfat milk and skip the whipped cream, you'll be set back a modest 160 calories and 9 Weight Watchers SmartPoints. However those feeling more indulgent could end up consuming a whopping 500 calories and 26 SmartPoints in the Venti Whole Milk Unicorn Frappuccino with whipped cream!

Before you order your Unicorn Frappuccino, make sure you're making a choice that works with your diet. To calculate the nutrition facts for your Unicorn Frappuccino, try the Starbucks Drink Calculator. Or you can browse all of the nutrition facts and Weight Watchers points for the Unicorn Frappuccino.

Healthier Or Just Healthier Sounding?
By: Alex Lenhoff

Imagine you're an executive at a fast food restaurant chain and you've got a dilemma. Customers are looking for delicious, healthy food with high quality ingredients, but your boss wants you to keep costs down. How can you satisfy both your customers AND your boss?

Well Burger King has found a novel approach to this problem. Instead of improving the quality of ingredients in your food or making your food healthier, you can just change the name to make it sound better! This is exactly what Burger King has done with their fish sandwiches.

Late last year, Burger King retired the BK Big Fish Sandwich. This tartar sauce topped, fried fish sandwich packed more calories and more fat than a Big Mac from McDonald's. In it's place, Burger King now offers the Premium Alaskan Fish Sandwich. Sounds like an upgrade, doesn't it? After all, it's "premium" now!

Is the Premium Alaskan Fish Sandwich any healthier than the BK Big Fish Sandwich? Is it tastier? Are the ingredients higher quality? The answer to all of those questions is no, because the Premium Alaskan Fish Sandwich is simply the new name for the BK Big Fish Sandwich. It's still the same tartar sauce topped, fried fish, 590 calorie sandwich it ever was.

Just because something sounds healthier doesn't mean it is, so check the nutrition facts before ordering.

TIP: Next time you're at a fast food restaurant, check the nutrition facts on menu items before you order. Just visit FastFoodNutrition.org from your smart phone, and you'll automatically get sent to our mobile-friendly site.

How Much Fat Do Average Americans Get From Fast Food?

Posted July 2nd, 2013 By: Alex Lenhoff

How Much Fat Do Average Americans Get From Fast Food?

How many times a year are you eating fast food? For the average American, the answer to that question is a whopping 159 times! If those meals consist of a burger and fries, you'd be eating 7,000 grams of fat a year just from fast food! That's so much fat, that it would fill up eleven 20 oz soda bottles!

The reality is that with our fast-paced modern lives, we're crunched for time and cutting out the convenience of fast food is not likely to happen. Instead of trying to remove fast food from your diet, try to make better choices when you find yourself at a fast food restaurant.

FastFoodNutrition.org can help! Their mobile site will let you look up nutrition facts on your phone, right from the line of your favorite fast food restaurant. Look up the nutrition facts, find something healthy and don't let those eleven soda bottles worth of fat end up in your rear end!

Which Subway Sub of the Day is healthiest?

Not all Subway sandwiches are created equal. Sunday's sub of the day, the Meatball Marinara, clocks in at 480 calories. That's shockingly 70% higher than Wednesday's sub of the day, Turkey Breast! The subs of the day that pack the fewest calories are the Turkey Breast (Wednesday) and the Black Forest Ham (Saturday); both of which are under 300 calories. If you plan your Subway trips accordingly, you can make sure that both your wallet and your body get a fantastic deal from your sub of the day!

Is Brown Rice Healthier Than White? By: Alex Lenhoff

Everyday, millions of people find themselves in line at their favorite burrito or Asian restaurant, faced with a decision of colossal importance: white or brown rice? Ok, maybe it isn't THAT big of a decision, but in a world where we're all trying to eat a little healthier, choosing the right option for your rice can make a difference.

So which should you choose? Is brown rice healthier than white, the way whole grain bread is healthier than white bread? Or is the idea that brown rice is healthier just a myth? There's only one way to know for sure... let's look at the nutrition facts!

First, let's check out the white and brown rice options at Chipotle. The white rice has 10 more calories and an extra 50 mg of sodium per serving. On top of that, the white rice doesn't have any fiber, while a serving of brown rice provides 2 grams of fiber. It looks like brown rice is the clear winner. So you should always eat brown rice over white... right?

Not so fast. You also have to remember that the way rice is prepared can have a major impact on the nutritional value. To illustrate this, let's take a look at the steamed brown rice and steamed white rice options from Panda Express.

The rice at Panda Express shows pretty much the opposite of what we saw at Chipotle. Here the brown rice has more calories, more fat and more sodium than the white rice. So what gives? Rice doesn't naturally have fat, so the presence of fat in Panda Express' brown rice indicates that it must be cooked in a fat such as oil or butter. Tricky, tricky!

All things being equal, we'd choose brown rice over white. Brown rice has more fiber, and studies have linked brown rice consumption with reduced risk for diabetes. However, like we saw with the rice from Panda Express, all things are NOT always equal. The bottom line is that the only way to know that you're making the healthy choice is to look up the nutrition facts.

If you had to rank fast food restaurants by smell, Subway would be in the top. Their fresh baked bread smells amazing! But with a dozen Subway bread choices to pick from, which one is the healthiest? It's probably not what you think.

Before we get into it, let's get one thing out of the way. If you're REALLY trying to eat as healthy as possible, you'll skip the bread and order a salad. You'll still get all the same meats and veggies you love from the sandwich menu, but they'll be chopped into bite sized pieces and served on a bed of lettuce or spinach.

But if a salad just won't hit the spot and you want a sandwich, choosing the right Subway bread isn't as easy as you might expect. Conventional wisdom would lead you to believe that the flatbread is going to have fewer calories than the traditional bread. Flatbread is thinner, so it's less bread, and that means fewer calories, right? Wrong. That's a myth we've dispelled before. You might also think that the 9-grain wheat bread will have fewer calories than the standard white Italian bread, but again you'd be wrong.

So what is the healthiest bread at Subway? It's a tie between the Sourdough and the Rye. A 6 inch serving of either of these breads contains 190 calories. That's 40 fewer calories than the flatbread and 50 fewer calories than the Monterey Cheddar!

The moral of this story is that sometimes making healthy choices takes more than common sense. It takes actually looking up the nutrition facts! FastFoodNutrition.org is a mobile-friendly website, so you can check nutrition facts on your phone from anywhere; even while standing in line at Subway!
